00:00at bill belichick and this is this is reported by espn uh typically i like to say that
00:05if you see don van not his name and some to a lesser degree seth wickersham's name pop up
00:09that's
00:10something something bad has happened something is a foot something is indeed a foot in a way this is
00:15the nicest of the things that could be a foot usually it's like oh here's an owner uh
00:20mal you know maltreating their their employees and stuff scandals scandal in this
00:25this is a scandal in a way but the national of the uh the pro football hall of fame
00:30in what is like a special committee for coaches and contributors and what have you
00:35or is it the older committee or what have you yeah the veterans commit thank you yeah um
00:40they have 50 votes to cast no you know what i think this is the actual hall of fame committee
00:45yeah is it well yeah 40 is necessary and 80 vote is necessary for an insurance
00:50requirement and we don't know what the full results of this are this is not this is not
00:54something that we'll find
00:55not yet but some some news got to espn seth wickersham and don van not that bill
01:00belichick which should have before a lot of people thought would be would be thought to be a first
01:05ballot hall of famer no brainer did not receive the number of votes necessary the
01:1040 votes necessary to be a first ballot hall hall of famer and the entirety of hell
01:15broke loose yeah for football for nfl football yeah and uh obviously any
01:20time there is a you know quote unquote scandal of to to any degree whether it's something
01:25really really scandalous or something like this that just makes people angry some people angry
01:30angry um you there's always a lot of levels to it and the immediate level uh you know that
01:35i go to the obvious one you know you've got to be kidding me yeah you
01:40you know you i know there are scandals in his past that maybe he played in
01:45but there's also another element to to scandal is the he said she said this
01:50sort of subterfuge the sort of mystery uh all these things that become
01:55part of why it happened and in the in the center of that is one bill polian
02:00who reportedly you know who reportedly you know who reportedly who apparently you know
02:05cannot remember things very well yeah bill polian told sports illustrated that he did
02:10cast a vote because he is on this committee um he's saying that he did cast a vote in favor of bill uh bill bell
02:15check because now the witch hunt has started people like who yeah give me all the names who did not vote yeah for bill
02:20belichick to go in the hall of fame first time bill belichick mind you that has 333 career
02:25wins which is second only to uh don shula and he has a
02:30number of more championships than don shula did in his storied career and don shula first bout
02:35hall of fame in 1997 but bill polian was asked about it he told sports illustrated
02:40yeah i voted for him and then when espn came back around he was like actually i can't say with 100
02:43percent certain that i remember
02:45whether or not why is he on the damn committee man that's a great question and he also said i'm
02:50shocked i'm shocked i'm shocked i tell you that he didn't uh get enough votes uh for
02:55it is it is bizarre i think another part of this is the anonymity
03:00of uh voters is ridiculous the who the anonymity okay so you're in this place because this has been
03:05one of the conversations that's popped up is this happens because voters have
03:10yes are anonymous right they they cast these votes in an anonymous way and
03:15if you do not have to stand on your vote then you can do things like this so
03:20you're in a place where you think that you need to this needs to be front and center we need a level of uh
03:24visibility
03:25visibility towards i have been for damn near 25 years i'm guessing uh simply because i've
03:30been a hall of fame voter for various ones the most well look at me
03:35i'm gonna put my chest out most notably the baseball hall of fame
03:40i have been in the crosshairs of uh some national baseball you know
03:45geeks uh the keepers of the game that they like to call themselves because of a vote that i made in the
03:50hall of fame i think the boys talked about it earlier uh but i backed it up and i told people why
03:55i wasn't anonymous about it and ultimately i i drew away from the i i stopped voting
04:00in the baseball hall of fame because i didn't like it i didn't like the process i dislike this process
04:05even more and the worst thing about it is not even the anonymity the worst thing about it is
04:10it's it's it's political in it in every they literally are
04:15stump speeches you know like like if like if you were up for the nfl hall of fame
04:20and i was stumping for you i would stand in front of the other 49 or 50 or whatever voter number of
04:24voter
04:25voter as it is and and state the case for why reggie atatula needs to be in the hall of fame
04:30that's stupid you you know you have the information when i was
04:35baseball hall of fame fame voter they they sent packets like packets like
04:40thick thick binders on on on all the players that were in in you know up for uh election
04:45it is everybody gonna read all the binders and the packets and such well i i scammed it scanned it
04:49pretty well
04:50pretty well but but but this is like hey let me tell you why so and so
04:55needs to be in the hall of fame now it does help some people that are deserving like robert brazil
05:00you know he will kind of slip through the cracks but john mcclain stumped for him but the simple fact
05:04that you were making
05:05almost by definition a political stump speech for a particular guy
05:10and that those voters are anonymous that's stupid it's a
05:15bad system it's a bad way to elect the hall of fame yeah and i think the thing that is being
05:20illuminated through all of this is that and by the way john mcclain hates me for my take on that but
05:25i'm sure he do yeah john mcclain is one of those dudes that stands up in champions
05:30various folks right including obviously andre johnson um the the conversation
05:35has been about how the voting has changed and how you don't just cast a vote for everybody you believe
05:40to be deserving that recently the the pro football hall of fame made it more difficult
05:45in that you have a certain amount of votes and you have to cast them widely yeah and then you have to decide
05:50you know what is the value of picking one person over the other um how do you feel about
05:55that the process that exists for currently because there's a lot of people who
06:00watch hall of fame watch football in general and they like the idea of an exclusive hall of fame
06:05and in trying to do that you end up with a process that has bill belichick not going first bout
06:10it i'm kind of against that and we do need to talk about belichick but by himself also but right
06:15because i think there's people that make the case that yes he's a great court a great coach but then
06:20i wonder how much the tom brady of this actually comes in at the writer level or the people that are voting but
06:25do you put any any validity into the people that say this the cheating scandals that
06:30have surrounded his tenure as a coach impact the the decision to whether or not put him in
06:35in or not i think something that you weigh as a voter nobody should sway you
06:40uh but with a speech uh about why or why not i'm guessing bill polian it would have been
06:45one of those guys well i don't know he can't recall the other part of it is is when you
06:50talking about you know 50 voters that's too few that in today's day
06:55and age that's that's way too few because there are a lot of these voters it
07:00almost like supreme court you know once you're in it's it's like a life you know
07:05point you ain't going nowhere unless you know he's doing ageism right here he's like they too old
07:08they don't they don't know what they're talking about
07:10and that it's like you shouldn't have a lifetime appointment to the hall of fame and keep it fresh too
07:15it's keep it fresh a lot of younger data driven people you know like
07:20he's blaming the youths uh like he's blaming the youths like me the kimes you know or or
07:25someone like that that might be the first time that me and me the kimes were in the same you know that needs to be
07:30part of it it needs to be at least a you know 150 200 people with an array
07:35of of you know expertise and an opinion on this thing i have a big problem
07:40with the nfl hall of fame as much as i have a problem with the baseball it's bigger with the nfl
07:44now we again
07:45we do have to talk about bill belichick you may you ask the question about should it should it come into play
07:50it would have it would have for me but just on a personal level you that's when you
07:55start weighing it yourself and not let people say well he was a this and he was a that and and
08:00affect you can i ask you something that has been sitting with me and is not really the most comfortable thing
08:05to throw out there how valuable does it like how valuable is it actually the idea
08:10first ballot because we make this such a big thing and ultimately if you are enshrined when you were
08:15enshrined it's still something of great magnitude we're placing the whole idea of this up
08:20roar is that first ballot means something inherently how much does
08:25that matter and you're hitting all my my hot button points here because all these things i feel
08:30very strongly about including that you are either a hall of famer or you're not
08:35you know bill belichick well let me give you a baseball example
08:40greg biggio i think he waited one or two years before he got inducted uh
08:45he got uh you know he got he got inducted one or two years later and i used to tell people
08:50he's not going to hit another 200 doubles between the first and the second year he's not going to you know
08:55he's not going to hit his you know 35th 3500th uh you know hit
09:00between one you're either a hall of famer or or or not so you vote them in and on the first
09:05ballot if you think they're a hall of fame which means expand the hall of fame the whole thing about
09:09he's gotta wait
09:10why i think because the process that you have in place makes you makes you go
09:15prioritize who you're voting for and it's not just who i think is the most important which i think we would
09:20go to at times sometimes it's this guy has been on the ballot for a little while and if he doesn't get in now he won't
09:25get in he deserves to be in and we have more time like all of these are things that people are budgeting and trying to worry
09:30about and this is why sometimes the hall of fame babe ruth was not a first ballot hall of famer
09:35babe freaking ruth so throw the whole hall of fame you're either
09:40hall of famer or you're not he'll get in right like are we are we all concerned about
09:45getting in yeah but for the time being they set the world on fire they set the world on
