00:00:30Welcome to Straight Talk, where we engage Kenya's brightest minds in the issues
00:00:35facing our nation. I'm your host, Yvonne Chege. This episode, we're joining...
00:00:40...by Wanjira Wanjiru. She's Kenya's social justice activist.
00:00:45The creator and co-founder of Madhari Social Justice.
00:00:50She's a political activist and generally somebody who's...
00:00:55...very engaged in the issues going on in our country and we're so...
00:01:00...blessed to have her on this episode. Thank you so much for joining us.
00:01:05Thank you for having me. You have a motto that...
00:01:10...is so pure. It says, when we lose...
00:01:15...our fear, they lose their power. Tell me what that...
00:01:20...motto is about. When we lose our fear, they lose their power.
00:01:25It's just a factual truth. And oftentimes...
00:01:30...I wonder why people just don't lose their fear. We are always complaining about...
00:01:35...the corruption in this country, the police brutality in this country.
00:01:40We are very good at expressing our...
00:01:45...dissatisfaction with the status quo and what's going on.
00:01:50And I always say...
00:01:52...when we just come together, everybody that's...
00:01:55...disgruntled. The other side has no power over us.
00:01:59So...
00:02:00...your fear keeps you stifled. It keeps you enslaved.
00:02:05Exactly. And it's only because we have fear that...
00:02:08...oppression keeps repeating itself.
00:02:10It's a tool of the oppressor.
00:02:13Does that then...
00:02:15...lend towards your motivation towards getting...
00:02:20...into activism?
00:02:21I got into activism sort of by...
00:02:25...lived experience. I was very young at the time. I just...
00:02:30...finished high school. I had experienced...
00:02:32...police brutality, of course, growing up.
00:02:35...in Mathare. But my elder brother was also killed by police.
00:02:38When I got older...
00:02:40...is when I began to see it as a systemic issue.
00:02:44And now that may...
00:02:45...made me feel like...
00:02:46...we cannot normalize this. Especially as a...
00:02:49...as a community.
00:02:50...it was mostly happening in informal settlements.
00:02:52And now we started challenging it.
00:02:54Not...
00:02:55...not from a point of fear...
00:02:57...but from a point of power...
00:02:59...a sovereign...
00:03:00...citizens of this country.
00:03:02Putting aside that we come from a poor...
00:03:05...neighbourhood.
00:03:06It's just that we are Canadians.
00:03:07We are sovereign citizens.
00:03:08And this...
00:03:09...cannot be...
00:03:10...allowed to continue to happen.
00:03:11Your older brother was killed by police.
00:03:14Mm-hmm.
00:03:15Was there any...
00:03:18...retribution...
00:03:20...or...
00:03:21...justice served in that instance?
00:03:25Uh...
00:03:26...may his soul rest in peace?
00:03:27Um...
00:03:28...no...
00:03:29...there wasn't.
00:03:30It was written that he was killed by Pangani police...
00:03:34...during the...
00:03:35...207...
00:03:36...208...
00:03:37...post-election violence.
00:03:38And during that time they...
00:03:40...there was a lot that was happening in the country.
00:03:42There was also the cleansing of...
00:03:44...uh...
00:03:45...young...
00:03:45...people.
00:03:46Um...
00:03:47...so my mum never got to put up a case.
00:03:50And a lot of women are...
00:03:53...following that trajectory.
00:03:55...given how long...
00:03:56...the judiciary takes...
00:03:58...to deal with this issue.
00:04:00...so it becomes like a reminder of the wounds...
00:04:03...the government inflicted on you.
00:04:05...by killing a child...
00:04:06...every time there's a court case...
00:04:08...and a drug zone.
00:04:10...year after year after year.
00:04:12So most parents are choosing to just...
00:04:14...accept that...
00:04:15...and their child is gone...
00:04:16...and leave it at that.
00:04:17And many people do that in Kenya.
00:04:19There's...
00:04:20...very many instances...
00:04:21...especially with the protests that happened...
00:04:23...two years ago...
00:04:24...people...
00:04:25...who have been killed...
00:04:26...by stray bullets...
00:04:28...within protests...
00:04:29...and there's...
00:04:30...no justice...
00:04:32...that has occurred...
00:04:33...how...
00:04:34...as an...
00:04:35...an activist...
00:04:36...it must seem...
00:04:37...very helpless.
00:04:38Um...
00:04:39...I think...
00:04:40...this is where my motto comes in.
00:04:42We see a police...
00:04:43...kill a young man...
00:04:44...when...
00:04:45...we know that this policeman...
00:04:46...has surely...
00:04:47...suddenly...
00:04:48...killed this young man...
00:04:49...yet...
00:04:50...we want to run...
00:04:51...to the judiciary...
00:04:53...or the court system...
00:04:54...that...
00:04:55...will take...
00:04:56...forever...
00:04:57...to deliver justice...
00:04:58...it just doesn't make sense...
00:05:00...to me...
00:05:01...sorry...
00:05:02...we have to deal with these people...
00:05:04...immediately...
00:05:05...so that it becomes a lesson...
00:05:07...to every other policeman.
00:05:08What is that?
00:05:10What is the dealing...
00:05:12...immediately...
00:05:13...from your perspective?
00:05:14What do you think I mean?
00:05:15...it's for you...
00:05:17...to suggest...
00:05:18...an eye for an eye...
00:05:19...a son for an eye...
00:05:20...or a son?
00:05:23...yeah...
00:05:24...oh...
00:05:25...well...
00:05:26...let's pivot...
00:05:27...you grew up in...
00:05:28...Madhari...
00:05:30...how...
00:05:31...okay...
00:05:32...you mentioned one instance...
00:05:33...here...
00:05:34...a very traumatizing...
00:05:35...your brother being killed...
00:05:36...by police...
00:05:37...I'm sure prior...
00:05:38...to that...
00:05:39...there were other...
00:05:40...instances that...
00:05:41...motivated you...
00:05:42...into getting into activism...
00:05:43...can you share that with us?
00:05:45...please?
00:05:46I think it's...
00:05:48...realizing that...
00:05:50...there's nobody...
00:05:51...from outside...
00:05:52...of our community...
00:05:53...that's going to come and bring...
00:05:55...the change...
00:05:56...that...
00:05:57...we want...
00:05:58...it's recognizing that...
00:06:00...poverty is...
00:06:02...manufactured...
00:06:03...and...
00:06:04...systemically entrenched...
00:06:05...it is not natural...
00:06:06...it is not an act of faith...
00:06:08...it is not laziness...
00:06:10...it's a political choice...
00:06:11...poverty is...
00:06:13...manufactured...
00:06:14...absolutely...
00:06:15...and I know this...
00:06:18...because I see...
00:06:19...how hard...
00:06:20...people work...
00:06:21...in this...
00:06:22...informal settlement...
00:06:23...and the political...
00:06:24...elite...
00:06:25...benefit...
00:06:26...of...
00:06:27...poverty...
00:06:28...I will give you...
00:06:29...a...
00:06:30...example...
00:06:31...okay...
00:06:32...during the...
00:06:33...Kazi Kwa Vijana...
00:06:34...uh-huh...
00:06:35...when the government...
00:06:36...was paying young people...
00:06:37...to clean...
00:06:38...the environment...
00:06:39...they were being paid weekly...
00:06:40...my mom has a shop...
00:06:42...in Matare...
00:06:43...so young people...
00:06:45...would take a loan...
00:06:46...we had a book...
00:06:47...you come...
00:06:48...you take things...
00:06:49...the mind...
00:06:50...you choose...
00:06:51...umichikuwa mkate...
00:06:52...maziwa...
00:06:53...ninini...
00:06:54...and then on Saturday...
00:06:55...when you...
00:06:55...you've been paid...
00:06:56...you come and clear...
00:06:57...the loan...
00:06:58...this was...
00:06:59...such a perfect time...
00:07:00...in Matare...
00:07:01...I was still a...
00:07:02...human rights monitor...
00:07:03...at MSJC...
00:07:04...and during this...
00:07:05...period when we had...
00:07:06...Kazi Kwa Vijana...
00:07:07...we documented...
00:07:08...zero cases...
00:07:09...of...
00:07:10...of police brutality...
00:07:11...this means...
00:07:12...that no young man...
00:07:13...was snatching phones...
00:07:14...or...
00:07:15...and works...
00:07:16...because they were...
00:07:17...they were engaged...
00:07:18...they were occupied...
00:07:19...they were working...
00:07:20...and being paid...
00:07:20...and able to provide...
00:07:21...yes...
00:07:22...gafla bin vu...
00:07:23...NYS...
00:07:24...
00:07:25...a...
00:07:26...scandal happened...
00:07:27...and all those billions...
00:07:28...were stolen by the...
00:07:30...political elite...
00:07:31...NYS1...
00:07:32...NYS1...
00:07:33...okay...
00:07:34...
00:07:35..and then...
00:07:37...kazi kwa vaya...
00:07:38...yikaisha...
00:07:39...mhm...
00:07:40It ended in January, I remember, February, that has to
00:07:4528 days. We documented 14 cases.
00:07:50of young men who've been killed by police.
00:07:55So we are coming from a transitional period where people were being taken care of by the government.
00:08:00They were having, even if little, they were having something to
00:08:05go by weekly. And now that social protection has been taken care of.
00:08:10They were taken away and look at how these people are being treated.
00:08:14This is a poor mother.
00:08:16He steals a handbag, he pays with his life.
00:08:18He steals a phone, he pays with his life.
00:08:20This is a politician. He steals billions of money.
00:08:25He goes to become governor.
00:08:28Why do we have
00:08:30such an equal application of the law?
00:08:32Or he's rewarded.
00:08:34Yeah.
00:08:35Yes.
00:08:36The more you steal, the more you're rewarded.
00:08:38Yeah.
00:08:39Yes.
00:08:40So you see how an equal it is, you see how the system is, you see how systemic it is.
00:08:45You see how intentional it is, you see how political it is.
00:08:48They are not accidents.
00:08:50They are not accidents or fate.
00:08:51They are political choices.
00:08:52They are systemic.
00:08:53They are political choices.
00:08:54It's systemic.
00:08:55And I argue that it must be systemically uprooted just as it is.
00:09:00It has been systemically entrenched.
00:09:01We'll get to that.
00:09:03Uprooting corruption.
00:09:05Because it's a very difficult thing.
00:09:10When somebody begins, right, especially someone beginning early,
00:09:15within their political career, corruption is a menace, right?
00:09:20But the more you grow, the more opportunities you find.
00:09:25the more your principles might change, right?
00:09:28Because the...
00:09:30Incentive might be more, how do you fight?
00:09:35If you were to be elected, for example, 2027...
00:09:40And somebody comes to you, I'll give you 300,000 to do this.
00:09:45That is illegal.
00:09:46How likely are you to not take the money?
00:09:50300,000 is a drop in the ocean.
00:09:52Oh!
00:09:53But anyway, my point would be...
00:09:55That it's not enough for just me as an individual to be in...
00:10:00in a political office.
00:10:02It is enough for like-minded individuals.
00:10:05To occupy these political spaces, which is why I am vouching...
00:10:10and pushing for the Jameses to occupy these political spaces...
00:10:14So that this...
00:10:15ideas that we have and are speaking about outside of the political space...
00:10:20we can go there and implement them together.
00:10:23Because what happens is...
00:10:24You go...
00:10:25You go there and you are overpowered, outnumbered, you are alone.
00:10:30You isolate it.
00:10:31You isolate it.
00:10:32It just becomes very difficult.
00:10:33But when we go there...
00:10:35as young people with this mindset, with this ideologies, with this...
00:10:40plans, I think it's going to be more realistic to deal with corruption.
00:10:45I sense this hopelessness about corruption.
00:10:48Do you know that in China...
00:10:50we kill corrupt officials?
00:10:53So again...
00:10:54political choice...
00:10:55political choices...
00:10:56It's political choices...
00:10:58but also political will as well.
00:11:00Right?
00:11:01In China, they had a law and there was a general will.
00:11:05from what I understand...
00:11:07to generally curb the vice.
00:11:09In Kenya...
00:11:10I'm not sure.
00:11:11Then it has to be the political will of the people.
00:11:15We have to decide...
00:11:16what do we do with corrupt officials?
00:11:18Because it's not fair...
00:11:19that we pay on...
00:11:20out of these taxes...
00:11:21and receive zero...
00:11:22zero...
00:11:23social protection services...
00:11:24even...
00:11:25education...
00:11:26it's just not fair...
00:11:28that thousands of Kenyan students...
00:11:30are at home...
00:11:32because the government...
00:11:33cannot...
00:11:34give these people...
00:11:35well education...
00:11:36you're right...
00:11:37because parents cannot afford it...
00:11:38Kenyans should be so...
00:11:40angry right now...
00:11:41like...
00:11:42what do you mean?
00:11:43What do our taxes do?
00:11:44Why are doctors striking?
00:11:45What do these taxes do?
00:11:47Well...
00:11:48many people would say then...
00:11:49right...
00:11:50our power...
00:11:51as an electorate...
00:11:52comes from the ballot...
00:11:53right...
00:11:54you go to...
00:11:55the polls...
00:11:56every five years...
00:11:57and you choose...
00:11:58the people you elect...
00:11:59if you...
00:12:00elect...
00:12:01a corrupt...
00:12:02individual...
00:12:03a person...
00:12:04who is...
00:12:05morally lacking...
00:12:07then you...
00:12:08kind of...
00:12:09should...
00:12:10expect...
00:12:11what comes to you...
00:12:12and you can see it...
00:12:13now...
00:12:14happening...
00:12:15Uganda...
00:12:16right...
00:12:17there's alleged...
00:12:18elections...
00:12:19we've seen...
00:12:20ballot rigging...
00:12:21we've seen...
00:12:22ballot stuffing...
00:12:23we've seen...
00:12:24um...
00:12:25heavy...
00:12:25police presence...
00:12:26internet...
00:12:27shut down...
00:12:28as well...
00:12:29how...
00:12:30optimistic...
00:12:33are you about...
00:12:34the Uganda...
00:12:35election...
00:12:36it was a lie...
00:12:38just like the...
00:12:39Tanzanian election...
00:12:40and...
00:12:41canons are beginning...
00:12:42to feel like...
00:12:43elections are probably...
00:12:44a lie...
00:12:45and...
00:12:45I don't even like...
00:12:46the idea...
00:12:47of waiting...
00:12:48every five years...
00:12:49to decide...
00:12:50the trajectory of...
00:12:50our lives...
00:12:51because what's happening...
00:12:52now...
00:12:53what's happening...
00:12:54now...
00:12:55right now...
00:12:55is so bad...
00:12:56we...
00:12:57we should be able...
00:12:58to...
00:12:59hold our leaders...
00:13:00I mean...
00:13:01the whole country...
00:13:02came out...
00:13:03in 2024...
00:13:04to say...
00:13:05we do not want...
00:13:06this kind of leadership...
00:13:07Does democracy...
00:13:08in East Africa exist?
00:13:10no...
00:13:11no...
00:13:12even in Kenya...
00:13:13I think...
00:13:14we like to think...
00:13:15in Kenya...
00:13:16we are...
00:13:17very...
00:13:18mature...
00:13:19and...
00:13:20um...
00:13:21uh...
00:13:22evolved...
00:13:23do we have...

00:13:30very...
00:13:30certainly...
00:13:31what our neighbours...
00:13:32are doing...
00:13:33that makes me...
00:13:34want to think...
00:13:35because...
00:13:35when we look...
00:13:36at...
00:13:372022...

00:13:43in this country...
00:13:44we saw...
00:13:45Kenyans come...
00:13:45together...
00:13:46and decide...
00:13:47that...
00:13:48Daniela Rakmoy...
00:13:49is no longer...
00:13:50going to be the...
00:13:50president of this...
00:13:51country...
00:13:52and I think...
00:13:53it was the first...
00:13:54serious uprising...
00:13:55American people...
00:13:56which...
00:13:57demonstrated...
00:13:58do you remember?
00:13:592002...
00:14:00yes...
00:14:00you remember...
00:14:01when...

00:14:10so...
00:14:11you're hoping...
00:14:12we kind of...
00:14:13have...
00:14:14that kind of...
00:14:15moment...
00:14:15we're gonna...
00:14:16have to have that...
00:14:17yes...
00:14:18in 2027...
00:14:19uh-huh...
00:14:20we're gonna...
00:14:20all rally...
00:14:21behind...
00:14:22one presidential...
00:14:23candidate...
00:14:25we're gonna...
00:14:26have to have...
00:14:27separate...
00:14:28tallying...
00:14:29for votes...
00:14:30it's not...
00:14:30going to be...
00:14:31just...
00:14:32IEBC...
00:14:33we do not trust...
00:14:34IEBC...
00:14:35for obvious reasons...
00:14:35we're gonna...
00:14:36have to have...
00:14:37uh...
00:14:38uh...
00:14:39community protection...
00:14:40because we know...
00:14:41that there is...
00:14:42high likelihood...
00:14:43for violence...
00:14:44we've had that...
00:14:45violence is also...
00:14:46being organized...
00:14:47here and there...
00:14:48we're gonna...
00:14:49have to defend...
00:14:50the Kenyan democracy...
00:14:51as we know it...
00:14:52or...
00:14:53lose it...
00:14:54altogether...
00:14:55I don't like to be...
00:14:57pessimistic...
00:14:58or...
00:14:59or lose it...
00:15:00all together...
00:15:01yeah...
00:15:02it's a...
00:15:03it's a really...
00:15:04catch-22...
00:15:05what...
00:15:06what makes you...
00:15:05say you have no...
00:15:06trust in IEBC...
00:15:07what has given you...
00:15:09any kind of...
00:15:10proof...
00:15:11that they won't...
00:15:12be able...
00:15:13to hold...
00:15:15a credible election...
00:15:16one...
00:15:17it's because...
00:15:18what has happened...
00:15:19when they have dared...
00:15:20to...
00:15:21remember...
00:15:22Chris...
00:15:23he was murdered...
00:15:24for daring...
00:15:25to say...
00:15:26the truth...
00:15:27about...
00:15:28the elections...
00:15:30two...
00:15:31is how...
00:15:32the previous elections...
00:15:33were handled...
00:15:34the IEBC...
00:15:35the commissioners...
00:15:36were split...
00:15:37we had those...
00:15:38who were...

00:15:40and those...
00:15:41who were...
00:15:42against...
00:15:43three...
00:15:44they're just not...
00:15:45doing enough...
00:15:46for voter registration...
00:15:47and...
00:15:48four...
00:15:48they're not doing...
00:15:49their bit...
00:15:50as a commission...
00:15:51as an electoral...
00:15:52commission...
00:15:53other civil society...
00:15:54organizations...
00:15:55have to take up...
00:15:56this...
00:15:57role...
00:15:58and responsibility...
00:15:58um...
00:16:00yeah...
00:16:01so...
00:16:02there's just not...
00:16:03enough...
00:16:03ah...
00:16:04also...
00:16:05their...
00:16:06their...
00:16:07their utterances...
00:16:08recently...
00:16:08uh...
00:16:09that...
00:16:10the...
00:16:112027...
00:16:12elections...
00:16:13are like...
00:16:13clear...
00:16:14to be...
00:16:15zikona...
00:16:16wezekano...
00:16:17zinaheza...
00:16:18zinaheza kua...
00:16:19Sasa...
00:16:20goeni...
00:16:21Electoral Commission...
00:16:23Kiambia wa kenya...
00:16:24zinaheza kuwa...
00:16:25and we will be able to raise elections.
00:16:29You see?
00:16:30Yeah.
00:16:30So there's, and a lot of people are saying,
00:16:35Kenyan should stop kidding themselves
00:16:37that they're going to remove Rotor by the ballot.
00:16:40So there's voter apathy.
00:16:42There is.
00:16:43Many people don't want to.
00:16:45Engage in those shenanigans.
00:16:47In the shenanigans, the long lines, all of the things.
00:16:50That will come along with going to vote.
00:16:53But.
00:16:55Then you ask yourself, then does democracy really exist?
00:16:58Yeah.
00:16:59What, what, what.
00:17:00What is the alternative?
00:17:01You see, Yvonne, after what happened in Tanzania and
00:17:05what happened in Uganda?
00:17:06You cannot blame Kenyans for just being, oh my God.
00:17:09Yeah.
00:17:10Why would I do it?
00:17:12What's the point?
00:17:13Someone's going to shoot at me for no reason.
00:17:15Because I went to cast my vote.
00:17:17Why would I do it?
00:17:18Because this is your country and your love.
00:17:20You have it and you cannot protect it.
00:17:22Otherwise, what's the alternative?
00:17:25Another round of dictatorship.
00:17:28Another round of dictatorship.
00:17:30Why would we just continue with life?
00:17:33You know, sometimes people are like.
00:17:35You know what?
00:17:36If I can go to work in the morning, pay my school fees.
00:17:40See my husband.
00:17:41Have a soft life.
00:17:42Why would I bother with this business?
00:17:45Called politics and voting and elections.
00:17:48What.
00:17:49What.
00:17:50What objective does it serve to me as a person?
00:17:54Because.
00:17:55Uh.
00:17:55That's an illusion that people put themselves in.
00:17:58It could crumble.
00:18:00In a minute.
00:18:01With.
00:18:02Bad leadership.
00:18:03And we've seen it happen.
00:18:05In other countries.
00:18:06Um.
00:18:07Why people should care about elections.
00:18:10Is because it's very important.
00:18:11Who's driving the politics in your country.
00:18:13Because politics are.
00:18:15exploring the respect.
00:18:16Every aspect.
00:18:17Every aspect of our lives.
00:18:18Even the hospital would we go through.
00:18:19The school.
00:18:20our kids go to, our priorities as a country.
00:18:25You would say are so misplaced, who needs a stadium?
00:18:30When hospitals cannot care for the populace.
00:18:34Good point.
00:18:35Our monies are being spent so carelessly and being said that they are so scarce.
00:18:40Yet we see extravagance.
00:18:42If we keep complaining about this...
00:18:45and do nothing about it, then it's really on us.
00:18:50We have to be so hungry in 2027.
00:18:52We have to be so united in 2027.
00:18:55We have to be so serious about this country.
00:18:58Fiercely so.
00:19:00The political elite are as afraid as they were in 2024.
00:19:05July.
00:19:06We have to be clear.
00:19:10Who owns Kenya?
00:19:12Is it these politicians?
00:19:14Or the...
00:19:15the people of Kenya?
00:19:16That's the big question in 2027.
00:19:20I think it's interesting.
00:19:22You have great points.
00:19:24You're saying we have to be...
00:19:25angry.
00:19:26We have to be united.
00:19:27We have to be clear.
00:19:28Right?
00:19:29And organized.
00:19:30And organized.
00:19:31I'd better add that.
00:19:32Organized as well.
00:19:33Yeah.
00:19:34Angry, we do very well.
00:19:35Anywhere you go in the first four years before an election cycle...
00:19:40Everyone is angry.
00:19:42United is where the challenge comes.
00:19:45Year five, somehow.
00:19:46Tribe comes in.
00:19:47Year five, somehow.
00:19:48Tribe comes in.
00:19:49Um...
00:19:50Areas come in.
00:19:51Mutuako syndrome comes in.
00:19:54And all of a sudden...
00:19:55a guy who's been...
00:19:57swindling your funds for five years...
00:19:59gets real.
00:20:00elected.
00:20:01For no reason, absolutely.
00:20:02How do we...
00:20:03How do we change that mentality?
00:20:05I think the Gen Z's have already changed our CCCC.
00:20:10that need to go on a Yoshidaya...
00:20:12tribe.
00:20:13Because it really doesn't make sense.
00:20:15My Uber driver this morning was telling me how...
00:20:18How...
00:20:19How...
00:20:20the Luya tribe has...
00:20:22uh...
00:20:2328 sub-tribes.
00:20:24Mm-hmm.
00:20:25Maragoli.
00:20:26Da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
00:20:27And how it's so difficult to have just one person.
00:20:30to be the flag bearer.
00:20:31And in my head I was just like,
00:20:33where is that bearing in presence?
00:20:35in present day politics.
00:20:36What does it matter if you are...
00:20:38Maragoli...
00:20:39or...
00:20:40Bukusu...
00:20:41or...
00:20:42I...
00:20:43I don't know the sub-tribes.
00:20:44But those things are so irrelevant.
00:20:45We are pushing for issue-based politics.
00:20:48Can you deliver education...
00:20:50for Kenyans?
00:20:51Can you deliver healthcare?
00:20:54Can you...
00:20:55deliver a higher quality of life?
00:20:57Can you implement...
00:20:58the Constitution of Kenya Treaty?
00:21:00In 2010?
00:21:01Those are the issues we should be talking about.
00:21:04And we have seen...
00:21:05that tribe is really a divide and rule tactic that maybe has worked
00:21:10over the years, but now we're just like, it doesn't matter who is present.
00:21:15It doesn't matter what tribe you come from. It matters who is president. It doesn't matter.
00:21:20What tribe you're coming from. What matters is the kind of politics.
00:21:25You're bringing to our country. Are you advancing our lives?
00:21:30Or regressing our lives?
00:21:34Is it about
00:21:35a bad thing to want to identify because I am okay. I'm not trying
00:21:40to describe the list, but I understand where it comes from. I want to identify with a person I've
00:21:45voted for. And I would like them to look like me.
00:21:50To sound like me. To speak my language. That's not a bad thing.
00:21:55The bad thing is it just doesn't matter if I speak like you, if I look like you, if
00:22:00my last name matches yours, what matters is, do you have the same view?
00:22:05What matters is the situation I have for this country. If I put you in a position of leadership.
00:22:10Are you going to drive us forward? Because think about it.
00:22:15It really doesn't matter who. Let me give you a perfect example.
00:22:20Yes.
00:22:21When Kenya gained independence in 1963, Joe McCain
00:22:25Kenya became the first president of this country. His tribesmen
00:22:30the majority of them fought for land and freedom, right?
00:22:35Do you know what Kenyatta did to these people?
00:22:40Yes.
00:22:41What did he do? Something that we will never
00:22:45forgive him for and future generations of this country. He told the British
00:22:50they could stay. Like you, they have our land.
00:22:55He told them you can stay. He bombed the freedom fighters who said we are not leaving.
00:23:00The forest without the land because the fight was not for you to become president.
00:23:05It was for us to get back our land, which we do not have because if
00:23:10he told the Muzungus, they can stay and keep our land. So he bit
00:23:15trade people who speak like him, people who look like him, people who
00:23:20have names that are similar, his kinsmen. So it's not really.
00:23:25Let's talk about identity. Let's have identity.
00:23:30Let's talk about identity. This is our identity of values of values.
00:23:35of a corrupt free country, of a country that is
00:23:40able to take care of health care for its people, education for its students.
00:23:44We share.
00:23:45In these values, and then it becomes easier to unify around these values.
00:23:50Because when we say we identify with tribes, can you imagine the fragmentation?
00:23:55That would cause.
00:23:56Already we have 42 tribes.
00:23:58There are sub-tribes within this.
00:24:00So if everybody is identifying with their tribes,
00:24:05it will cause further fragmentation.
00:24:07And the goal for 2027 is unity.
00:24:10So on what basis can we unite?
00:24:12That we do not want a Kenya where young people...
00:24:15are killed for voicing that they want an end to corruption.
00:24:20That they want a parliament that works for the people and not the president.
00:24:25his finance bill to be kicked out.
00:24:28Do you get me?
00:24:29No, I understand.
00:24:30You're saying despite or not despite, we can all be different.
00:24:35Yeah.
00:24:36We can all have our different languages.
00:24:39Yeah.
00:24:40Languages.
00:24:40Tribes.
00:24:41Tribes.
00:24:42Cultures.
00:24:43Yes.
00:24:44But we should unite and recognize...
00:24:45Kenya is uniting in terms of values.
00:24:47Right?
00:24:48Yeah.
00:24:49Unity.
00:24:50Justice.
00:24:51Peace.
00:24:52What...
00:24:53Yeah.
00:24:54The national anthem speaks...
00:24:55Yes.
00:24:56Right?
00:24:57Like a beautiful Kenya.
00:25:00And...
00:25:00Even...
00:25:01A magical Kenya.
00:25:02I wanna shout out the cultural...
00:25:05space.
00:25:06The entertainment space.
00:25:07The entertainment space.
00:25:08Because they're bringing this diversity.
00:25:10And the beauty of Kenya.
00:25:11In song.
00:25:12Like you'll hear a law artist has collab.
00:25:15With a kikuyu artist.
00:25:16Or...
00:25:17At Swahili...
00:25:18Mtawana imba shu...
00:25:19Mtawana imba shu...
00:25:20Mtawana imba sheng.
00:25:21Alafu anaintegrate.
00:25:22Kijaka and everybody else is vibing to that.
00:25:25Like just...
00:25:25Just bringing the beauty...
00:25:26Of our diversity.
00:25:27And that's so cute.
00:25:28I'm so glad.
00:25:30We have...
00:25:31Other different tribes.
00:25:32In this country.
00:25:33It's not just kikuyus.
00:25:34Or luo.
00:25:35Or khalis.
00:25:36I'm so glad we have all of these diversities.
00:25:38Because then that...
00:25:39Uh...
00:25:40Brings...
00:25:40The beauty of Kenya.
00:25:41As a whole.
00:25:42We are able to.
00:25:43I'm able to have...
00:25:45Luo sisters.
00:25:46I'm able to have...
00:25:47You know?
00:25:48It's so cute.
00:25:50But it doesn't...
00:25:52Dictate...
00:25:53Our politics.
00:25:54Our...
00:25:55Our politics.
00:25:56Are dictated.
00:25:57By our shared vision.
00:25:58For our country.
00:25:59Because now...
00:26:00We are brothers and sisters.
00:26:01Now we are allies.
00:26:02Now we are building something.
00:26:05Together.
00:26:06For our...
00:26:07For ourselves.
00:26:08And for posterity.
00:26:10I think you are highlighting also that maybe...
00:26:13Politicians may be...
00:26:15Utilize our tribe to...
00:26:17Divide and rule.
00:26:18Divide...
00:26:19Us.
00:26:20Us.
00:26:21And we live...
00:26:22As Kenyans.
00:26:23Very happily.
00:26:24With one another.
00:26:25As neighbors.
00:26:26And brothers.
00:26:27And friends.
00:26:28Other than on the one year.
00:26:30In which we have an election.
00:26:31Exactly.
00:26:32Yes.
00:26:33Exactly.
00:26:34Okay.
00:26:35You are a co-founder of the Madare Social Justice Center.
00:26:40Yes.
00:26:41When did you...
00:26:42Come around to doing that?
00:26:45I was 19, that was in 20.
00:26:50Just after high school.
00:26:52What was the objective of this project?
00:26:55To end the normalization of police brutality in Madhari, to awaken the police.
00:27:00That is why it's...
00:27:05Madhari Social Justice Center.
00:27:08So social justice is a constitution...
00:27:10And it's those things we are talking about.
00:27:12Healthcare.
00:27:13Our constitution says we have...
00:27:15The highest attainable standard of healthcare.
00:27:18Highest!
00:27:20Yes.
00:27:21You get the highest attainable.
00:27:22Yes.
00:27:23You get the highest attainable.
00:27:25The highest attainable standard of healthcare.
00:27:27Yes.
00:27:28Like that's a constitutional right.
00:27:30It's not...
00:27:30It's not utopia.
00:27:31It's not a crazy demand.
00:27:34It might be a bit...
00:27:35Of utopia.
00:27:36But yes.
00:27:37The amount of money these guys spend on nonsense.
00:27:40But you see, you're saying that Kenya can be utopia.
00:27:44We can with the right...
00:27:45The right objectives and political leadership we can create.
00:27:49The right objectives and political leadership we can create.
00:27:50Utopia.
00:27:51Right here where we live.
00:27:52Yeah.
00:27:53Exactly.
00:27:54With the right...
00:27:55Uh...
00:27:56With the right...
00:27:57Uh...
00:27:58Mechanisms for...
00:27:59If you deviate.
00:28:00Yeah.
00:28:00from this collective path that we are on you're gonna have to face consequences
00:28:05which I think is why China is so successful because it doesn't matter who you are
00:28:10if you steal our resources you pay with your life people should be so afraid
00:28:15about stealing our resources are from our collective funds
00:28:20because that's not there that's not there
00:28:25people just IBA and it's sort of being like a culture like everybody knows
00:28:30like it's this is how things are in Kenya I think for us as Gen Z
00:28:35as young people we are like we totally cannot normalize this because if we
00:28:40continue going down the hill it's just gonna get worse and worse
00:28:45I mean we had free primary education
00:28:50it was a crime to not take your child to school
00:28:53you'd be hunted down by the area chief
00:28:55right now
00:29:00education is so expensive
00:29:03it's cool
00:29:04it's cool you
00:29:05uniform alone is like what 30,000 uniform
00:29:10and this is a couple of years after Kibaki
00:29:15so if we continue going on this trajectory and life is supposed to get
00:29:20better as the years go by
00:29:22better as the years go by I think that is the natural trajectory of life
00:29:25life so we can see that it's getting worse which is why we are fighting so hard that this
00:29:30regression stops as as soon as possible and we start working on the
00:29:35right path and the regression is in every policy I think one of the things for
00:29:40Madare social justice centre is police brutality
00:29:45but we've seen over the past even just three four years
00:29:50the increase of extrajudicial killings increase of police protection
00:29:55mortality extra like increase of just a lot of
00:30:00brutality brutality and state sanctioned violence
00:30:05what how how are you guys going to proceed
00:30:10with this current trend we have published a report
00:30:15which is titled the who is next report
00:30:17our theatre team the social justice centre
00:30:20of travelling theatre is working on a film but now it really becomes a question for
00:30:25Canada a power is not working
00:30:30has not worked for for for it's supposed to be the body that deals with
00:30:35police successes I also have to mention that we have the most notorious killer cop
00:30:40in in court we have an ongoing case
00:30:45I think of Ahmed Rashid I think the whole country
00:30:48I think the whole country show him should the two boys for
00:30:50easily when they they had their hands up in surrender but that's my new to compare
00:30:55to the gen z killings that happened uh yeah compared to the gen z killings
00:31:00that happened in 2024 the abductions i mean
00:31:05it's now it's no longer a secret and there's no there's no
00:31:10drive towards any public inquiry
00:31:15there are those but you see with the current
00:31:20regime we're not gonna get anywhere with that no desire
00:31:23towards justice i've been going
00:31:25for the case of rex masai i've been going when rasheed has a mention in court
00:31:30this was in 2017 when the two boys were shot
00:31:35initially it's 20 20 6 we're still in court
00:31:40so what what change are you hoping for also it's individual cases
00:31:45this is something that requires systemic change because it's one kilo cup here
00:31:50one kilo cup there one kilo cup there uh but it doesn't mean that
00:31:55if you put this one in jail you're gonna reform the system
00:31:58i think we need to
00:32:00abolish the current police system and start from scratch
00:32:05how we recruit police how we train police because i don't think they have
00:32:10a patriotic training they have a training to clobber and
00:32:15respect orders and we saw you remember that policeman who
00:32:20is going to put gas he come he come pass one corner he didn't
00:32:25he didn't even have insurance he was acting on orders
00:32:37you
00:32:30and the other policeman who shot on gen z's and killed his own brother
00:32:35he was like yeah yeah it's so crazy
00:32:39it's so crazy
00:32:40These things are ridiculous. I think future historians will be looking at some of...
00:32:45the things that were happening in this country in the present time and they would just be, this was so...
00:32:50It's possible, yes, to...
00:32:55highlight the indiscretions in the...
00:33:00the poor behaviour of police forces. Absolutely, right?
00:33:05But there might be other factors involved as well.
00:33:10There are other factors involved as well.
00:33:14Yvonne.
00:33:15Do you remember when Albert O'Drong was killed in Kenya?
00:33:20We had a lot of finance matched
00:33:22and demanded that
00:33:23action is taken.
00:33:25And now we are talking about a promotion.
00:33:28For this...
00:33:30person who is said to have murder at O'Drong.
00:33:35So...
00:33:37And let's remember where police originated.
00:33:40from.
00:33:41Here in Kenya, it was to protect the interests of...
00:33:45the British.
00:33:46Against the natives, which is us.
00:33:48Now, the people.
00:33:50So, they have...
00:33:51So, they have...
00:33:52My grandmother was telling me about...
00:33:54um...
00:33:55When...
00:33:55When she was a baby.
00:33:56When she was like six, seven.
00:33:57There were this...
00:33:58sort of police.
00:33:59It was...
00:34:00It wasn't officially police.
00:34:01They were called Sari.
00:34:02Sari, yeah.
00:34:03Sari.
00:34:04They used to look for people.
00:34:05who have not gone to do communal.
00:34:07Communal work, which was digging trenches.
00:34:10Which is now dividing the...
00:34:12constituencies.
00:34:13And they were so violent.
00:34:15She told me how...
00:34:17her dad...
00:34:18was beaten by those Sari.
00:34:20guys.
00:34:21When they came to...
00:34:22their heart and found that...
00:34:23he was home.
00:34:24He was sick.
00:34:25My grandmother...
00:34:26My grandmother's...
00:34:27My great-grandmother had gone to the communal work.
00:34:29But my...
00:34:30My grandfather...
00:34:31Couldn't go.
00:34:32He was ill.
00:34:33He was ill.
00:34:34And the response to my...
00:34:35My great-grandmother...
00:34:35was...
00:34:36Alipigwa na...
00:34:37Rungu...
00:34:38Akafe.
00:34:39Akafe.
00:34:40Akafe.
00:34:40wakance.
00:34:41My grandfather fell.
00:34:42She would just found...
00:34:43a botangal.
00:34:44Akafe...
00:34:45That's a lot of pain.
00:34:46My grandmother...
00:34:47thought he had died...
00:34:49And she just started crying...
00:34:50And throwing out...
00:34:51grundsitating a knife...
00:34:52fork...
00:34:53to help.
00:34:54Gone into Akafe.
00:34:56Akafe.
00:34:58I was unconscious...
00:34:59And she just started crying...
00:35:01me cr values.
00:35:03And a me...
00:35:04like that policeman who's been arrested because he shot
00:35:09somebody's child like this like it's a chicken
00:35:14so you're saying again the motive of the police isn't necessary
00:35:19to enforce security it is to enforce the will of
00:35:24the upper class
00:35:26yeah
00:35:28but
00:35:29how do you change that you see demolish abolish defund you really
00:35:34can't abolish the police we can't abolish the police and not to abolish
00:35:39and have no protection it's to abolish so that we can rebuild the kind of
00:35:44police system that we want for ourselves and of course why you feel like it's an
00:35:48impossibility
00:35:49because not with this current regime because this is not a regime for the
00:35:53people
00:35:54it is a regime for the anti-people
00:35:56so when we have a
00:35:59people's regime
00:35:59it will be so automatic
00:36:02if we have a
00:36:03abolish
00:36:04abolish the police
00:36:05if we had a people's regime would we have to abolish the police
00:36:09because then the police would
00:36:10ultimately you know how they say the head reflects the neck or the neck
00:36:14reflects the head right perhaps right now the police operates based
00:36:19based on what the leadership is demonstrating
00:36:24if we had leadership that said we are for the people
00:36:29can we then try and reform the police
00:36:34in a manner that works for the Kenyan people
00:36:36for the past two three days
00:36:39decades
00:36:39it's been talks of police reforms
00:36:41so there's the trust is
00:36:44completely eroded
00:36:45we cannot reform a police force
00:36:49that is used to brutalize canyons and get away with it
00:36:52that is used to
00:36:54steal from canyons and get away with it
00:36:55the police stations are now extortion dense
00:36:57ukishikwa utoki evo
00:36:59unatoado
00:36:59unatoado
00:36:59unatoaka
00:37:01then i'll
00:37:01abolish the police
00:37:04so we rebuild
00:37:05we start afresh
00:37:07so we rebuild we start afresh
00:37:07so we rebuild we start afresh
00:37:09yeah
00:37:10i have i have and i'm not the only one who had do you know
00:37:14how do you atinao you've you've become good you have reformed
00:37:19you've been killing people
00:37:20you've been stealing from people
00:37:22now
00:37:24you want to tell us you have reformed
00:37:25now we trust you with our lives
00:37:26you can't reform a gang
00:37:29you cannot
00:37:29you cannot legalize a gang
00:37:31you cannot
00:37:32and they
00:37:34have been operating like gangs allegedly
00:37:36ni system ya majombazi
00:37:38wate
00:37:39wate
00:37:40wate
00:37:40akuna kwa reform
00:37:41ni kuyabolish
00:37:43tuanzetena
00:37:44okay you speak like you have political aspirations
00:37:49do you have ideas about 2027
00:37:54the canon elections
00:37:55did i speak like i have political aspirations
00:37:59okay
00:38:00um i just want better for this country
00:38:04i and i feel like it's not something out of reach
00:38:09it's something that's very possible
00:38:11and um i will be contested
00:38:14for
00:38:14a member of county assembly
00:38:16in madari constituent
00:38:19i'd initially wanted to go for member of parliament
00:38:21uh but uh
00:38:24resources
00:38:24and
00:38:25it must be very challenging
00:38:27especially
00:38:29especially within nairobi
00:38:30the amount of money you need to run
00:38:32um
00:38:33and
00:38:33and
00:38:34you see that's the other thing
00:38:35why do we have to have money politics
00:38:37it keeps good candidates away
00:38:39why
00:38:39why are our politics money politics
00:38:41like
00:38:43ukismama
00:38:44from the beginning
00:38:47from the beginning
00:38:49yes
00:38:49so it's problematic
00:38:50that our politics are money politics
00:38:53and not issue-based
00:38:54politics
00:38:54and not
00:38:55conversational politics
00:38:56about how we're gonna advance
00:38:58can
00:38:59collectively
00:38:59and i think that's one of the things
00:39:01that need to change as well
00:39:02because a politician will
00:39:04tell you
00:39:04and i've seen
00:39:04and i've heard
00:39:05in my constituency
00:39:06say
00:39:09makura yako
00:39:09sawa
00:39:10sinilikupea do
00:39:11tuonane after
00:39:12five years
00:39:14so this money
00:39:15takes away your voice
00:39:17to hold them accountable
00:39:18it shouldn't
00:39:19of course it shouldn't
00:39:20but
00:39:21the money politics
00:39:24is one of the things
00:39:25that even perpetuates corruption
00:39:26because when you are there
00:39:28in a position
00:39:29of leadership
00:39:29you start accumulating money
00:39:31in preparation
00:39:33for the next election
00:39:34you start stealing
00:39:35to give people
00:39:36or you have to recoup your money
00:39:38you've spent so much
00:39:39of your own money
00:39:40let me tell you a sad story
00:39:42in my
00:39:43concern
00:39:44constituency
00:39:44hospital ward
00:39:45there was a lady called susan
00:39:47i was still in high school
00:39:48when she was
00:39:48viral
00:39:49but sure
00:39:49it was just when this
00:39:51mca thing started
00:39:52it was the first time
00:39:53we were vying for
00:39:54um
00:39:55we were voting
00:39:55for a member of county
00:39:56assembly
00:39:57in susan
00:39:58two
00:39:59took laws
00:39:59and she was so confident
00:40:02she spent all her
00:40:04savings
00:40:04that she was going to win
00:40:06and then susan did not win
00:40:09she got so sick
00:40:10so stressed
00:40:12she died
00:40:14within a period of two months
00:40:16after the results
00:40:17she was so
00:40:18like
00:40:19her whole life
00:40:19just
00:40:20was so messed up
00:40:21by
00:40:21how that went
00:40:23she couldn't believe
00:40:24that she could put
00:40:25her everything
00:40:26into this course
00:40:28she could take
00:40:28close
00:40:29and then she doesn't get
00:40:30the money
00:40:31so
00:40:31this
00:40:32manipulator
00:40:34as mca
00:40:35how do you change that
00:40:36how does that change
00:40:37because that's
00:40:39something
00:40:39everyone who vies
00:40:41there isn't a person
00:40:42i haven't spoken to
00:40:44vies for public office
00:40:45that doesn't complain
00:40:46how much money
00:40:47you have to spend
00:40:49it is
00:40:49a common denominator
00:40:51with
00:40:52anyone
00:40:54who wants to run
00:40:54but somehow
00:40:56that's something
00:40:57that has never changed
00:40:59there's never a legislation
00:41:00cap
00:41:01on how much
00:41:02people spend
00:41:03on
00:41:03police
00:41:04you
00:41:04political campaigns
00:41:05and nobody seems
00:41:06to want
00:41:07to do anything
00:41:08about
00:41:09the fact that
00:41:10the amount of money
00:41:11you spend
00:41:12for an election
00:41:13is
00:41:13ex
00:41:14exorbitant
00:41:14it's wrong
00:41:15yeah
00:41:16i don't intend
00:41:18to give people
00:41:18my
00:41:19money
00:41:19to vote
00:41:19for me
00:41:20that's for one
00:41:21and i think
00:41:21that's gonna be
00:41:22interesting
00:41:22so i'll also
00:41:23be documenting
00:41:24myself
00:41:24we're doing
00:41:25the campaign
00:41:26period
00:41:27what about
00:41:28handouts
00:41:29yeah
00:41:30that is handouts
00:41:31t-shirts
00:41:32none of that
00:41:32what i
00:41:34what i intend
00:41:34to do
00:41:35for my
00:41:36campaign
00:41:36you know
00:41:37there are
00:41:37those
00:41:37hesabos
00:41:39you must
00:41:39have
00:41:39you must
00:41:41have
00:41:41hesabos
00:41:41for your
00:41:42security
00:41:42you must
00:41:43have
00:41:43hesabos
00:41:44you
00:41:44for your
00:41:44team
00:41:44you can't
00:41:45come
00:41:45and spend
00:41:45a whole
00:41:46day
00:41:46campaigning
00:41:48for me
00:41:48and
00:41:49then
