The HBO host focused his opening segment on the protests in France over the recently raised retirement age.

00:00Although many were anticipating John Oliver's take on Donald Trump's indictment,
00:04the Last Week Tonight host barely addressed it, but for good reason.
00:08Joking it had been a quiet week, Oliver started out by noting some of the biggest news of the
00:12past seven days, including the revelation that the Tyrannosaurus Rex had lips, CBS's daytime
00:18drama The Young and the Restless celebrating 50 years on the air, and a photo of the Pope
00:23wearing a puffy jacket going viral before it was revealed to be fake. Oh, and in other news,
00:28a Manhattan grand jury voted to indict Trump on charges involving payments made during the
00:332016 presidential campaign to silence claims of an extramarital sexual encounter.
00:39And look, I would talk more about the Trump indictment if we even knew what the exact
00:43charges were right now, but we don't. Instead, Oliver used his opening segment to address the
00:48protests in France, which he called Europe's high school bully over the recently raised
00:53retirement age from 62 to 64. Citizens have taken to the streets by marching, striking,
01:00chanting, and even setting fires to protest. Oliver went on to point out that a retirement
01:05age of 62 is still pretty low among Western nations.
01:08In Germany, the comparable retirement age is 65. In Italy, it's 67. And in the U.S.,
01:15the retirement age is no.
01:16Oliver also showed news footage of a couple enjoying wine at an outdoor cafe, completely
01:22ignoring a fire burning in the street just a few yards away, noting that the moment was
01:27quintessentially French.
01:28I think it is safe to say that after a nuclear holocaust, the only creatures left standing
01:33will be cockroaches and an outlandishly relaxed, wine-sipping French couple, entirely unfazed
01:38by the obliteration of society.
