00:00John Oliver made it clear Sunday on his HBO show that President Trump's pardon of the
00:10controversial former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio sets a dangerous precedent. Trump
00:15issued his first presidential pardon to Arpaio late last month after the 85-year-old
00:19was convicted of criminal contempt related to his department going after
00:23undocumented immigrants. Trump previously said during recent rallies that the
00:27former sheriff was just doing his job. On Last Week Tonight, Oliver made sure his
00:32viewers knew that was highly inaccurate. You wouldn't say that John Wayne Gacy was
00:36just doing his job, even though he was, by all accounts, a pretty good birthday
00:41clown. Oliver also commented on Arpaio forcing male jail inmates to wear pink
00:46underwear and striped prison clothes. That is just awful, Oliver said. The pink
00:51underwear is fine, but no one should be forced to wear horizontal stripes. They
00:55widen the silhouette. That is a fact. That's a fashion fact. On a more serious
00:59note, however, Oliver said the move was disturbing.
01:03I do not doubt that Trump thinks everything that Joe Arpaio did was or should be part of a
01:08law enforcement officer's job. And that is the real problem here, the host said. That is
01:13why this pardon is a slap in the face to Latinos who Arpaio and his department
01:18unconstitutionally targeted. To watch John Oliver's full segment on Joe Arpaio's
01:22pardon, head to THR.com and tell us what you thought of his take on the situation in
01:27the comments section. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Lyndsey Rodrigues.
