'The Apprentice' which stars Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump stunned the Cannes Film Festival during its highly anticipated premiere. The film explores Trump's rise to power in 1980s America under the influence of the firebrand rightwing attorney Roy Cohn, played by Jeremy Strong. During the movie's press conference at the festival, filmmaker Ali Abbasi responded to the Trump campaign's threat to sue over the film.

00:16Several shocking moments late in the film drew an audible gasp from the Cannes premiere crowd,

00:20including a scene depicting Trump's alleged sexual assault of his first wife, Ivana,

00:25and a surgery room sequence showing Trump getting liposuction.

00:28Following the screening, the Cannes crowd gave the film a nearly eight-minute standing ovation.

00:33During the movie's press conference at the festival,

00:35filmmaker Ali Abassi responded to the Trump campaign's threat to sue.

00:39Everybody talks about him suing a lot of people.

00:42They don't talk about his success rate, though, you know?

00:46The team behind the film says they encouraged the Trump campaign to actually see the movie.

00:51The director also shared what he thinks Trump would think of the film.

00:53I think he would be surprised, you know?

00:56And I, you know, like I said before, like, I would be happy.

01:09As for the reviews so far, critics are praising Strong and Stan for their performances,
