John Oliver on Sunday's 'Last Week Tonight' took a deep dive into President Trump's issues with the World Health Organization or, as Oliver called it, "one of the president's favorite punching bags."
Transcript
00:00Our main story concerns the World Health Organization, or WHO.
00:05You may already be aware of it in its role as one of the president's favorite punching bags.
00:09John Oliver took a deep dive into President Trump's issues with the World Health Organization
00:13on Sunday's episode of Last Week Tonight on HBO.
00:17Over the last six months, Trump has consistently tried to deflect blame
00:21for his handling of the coronavirus onto the WHO, China,
00:25and the close relationship that he claims the two have.
00:27Oliver noted that Trump had formally submitted a notice to the United Nations
00:31to withdraw from the WHO that will take effect on July 6, 2021.
00:36The host then laid out his case about the importance of the WHO
00:39and why he believes the U.S.'s withdrawal would be detrimental.
00:42He pointed out the WHO's contributions over the years, including eradicating smallpox in 1979.
00:48Oliver also noted that the WHO develops the flu vaccine every year
00:52and tracks dozens of other infectious diseases worldwide,
00:55from monkeypox to yellow fever to Ebola.
00:58Plus, the WHO is on the verge of eradicating polio.
01:01According to the host, the WHO's annual budget is $2.4 billion a year,
01:06which equals the budget of a large U.S. hospital.
01:08At its best, the WHO does vitally important work for shockingly little money,
01:14which is not to say that it is perfect.
01:16Oliver went on to detail criticisms of how the organization has behaved in the past,
01:20including being, quote,
01:21too slow to respond to the Ebola outbreak in 2015.
01:25However, he added that deciding to pull away from the WHO in the middle of a pandemic is like,
01:29taking the fire engines away in the middle of fighting the fire,
01:32or getting rid of the lifeboats while the boat is sinking,
01:35or choosing to edit Kevin Spacey into a movie just weeks before its release date.
01:40Oliver continued, it's the worst possible decision at the worst possible time.
01:44The host summed it all up like this,
01:46It is fine if the U.S. has problems with the WHO.
01:50It has problems.
01:52But the solution clearly isn't to walk away, it's to try and fix them.
01:56He continued, but the only way for the U.S. to have a say in how that happens
01:59is to have a seat at the table.
02:01And we're about to just give that up.
