00:00:00Order has been restored as far as these folks are concerned
00:00:30Hello and welcome to Speed Channel's coverage of qualifying for the 8th round of the 2004 Formula One World Championship
00:00:36It's the Canadian Grand Prix
00:00:37Hello everybody, I'm Rick DeBruylle
00:00:39Joining me this afternoon are technical analysts Steve Matchett, David Hobbs, Bob Varsha
00:00:44off gallivanting someplace in the countryside of France
00:00:48Very nice too
00:00:50But they're missing an absolutely beautiful day in Canada
00:00:54I tell you, it was great yesterday, the weather is absolutely wonderful today
00:00:58And the crowd is great as well
00:01:00In fact, it is already a sold out crowd for this weekend
00:01:03So much for the Villeneuve effect
00:01:06The whole thing everybody been talking about
00:01:08With the fact that without Villeneuve would the crowd turn out?
00:01:11Well indeed they have
00:01:12Already had a session earlier today, pre-qualifying
00:01:15And very intriguing results
00:01:19Of course the first guy out was Michael Schumacher
00:01:21The winner of the European Grand Prix
00:01:24By virtue of the fact that he was the first man on the track
00:01:26He was also the provisional pole sitter
00:01:29Jenson Button quickly came along though in the BAR
00:01:31And took it away from him
00:01:33The question is, was it going to be good enough to last?
00:01:35And it wasn't
00:01:36He ended up 7th
00:01:37Then the first of the two Renault cars
00:01:38Jarno truly out
00:01:40Doing a great time
00:01:4113-149
00:01:42He would finish 5th overall in this provisional qualifying session
00:01:45Nevertheless
00:01:46Particularly fine
00:01:47This chassis is working very well here
00:01:49And here's his teammate
00:01:50Alonso
00:01:51Fernando Alonso
00:01:52Out in the sister R24 car
00:01:53Another great time from him
00:01:550.3 seconds
00:01:56He would too take the provisional pole
00:01:58And then along came Juan Pablo Montoya
00:02:00The pole winner at this track in 2002
00:02:02And he shows that Williams has something in reserve
00:02:05He takes the provisional pole
00:02:07Although he ended up 2nd fastest on the day
00:02:09Jimmy Bruni and the Minardi
00:02:11Couldn't even make it through his entire lap
00:02:13As a result he parked the car
00:02:14And got no time
00:02:16The BAR-06
00:02:17This one driven by Sato
00:02:18Third quickest overall
00:02:20This car has also been performing particularly well here
00:02:23A lot of horsepower
00:02:25Great trim
00:02:27And then Kimi Räikkönen
00:02:28After the MP4-19
00:02:30He would manage 9th quickest in the session
00:02:33For McLaren
00:02:35But the guy who got the pole
00:02:36Last year's pole winner
00:02:37Ralph Schumacher
00:02:39In the Williams BMW
00:02:40Comes across the line
00:02:41In a 1-12.4-4-1
00:02:46Not quite beating Montoya's record
00:02:50From several years ago
00:02:51But very, very close
00:02:53And the question is
00:02:55What does this mean for the rest of the day, Steve?
00:02:57Well, boy, I tell you
00:02:59There's an awful lot of time
00:03:00Of Ralph Schumacher
00:03:023.3 seconds quicker
00:03:04Than last year's pole
00:03:06Now bear in mind
00:03:07That last year
00:03:08We're still running
00:03:09The same qualifying rules
00:03:10I.e. the fuel has to be in the car
00:03:11For the opening stint
00:03:13Well, this is the qualifying starting order
00:03:16For the rest of the field
00:03:17You saw there for just a moment
00:03:18Once again
00:03:19Great crowd out here
00:03:20That tickets are sold out for all weekend long
00:03:24This is very much
00:03:26This is very much a chess game, Rick
00:03:28I was looking at those times
00:03:29Of practice times coming in this morning
00:03:30From provisional qualifying
00:03:32Is it gonna be a two-stop race
00:03:34Or a three-stop race?
00:03:35That seems to be the big question
00:03:36It's all gonna come down to brake wear
00:03:38Guys that are really concerned about brake wear
00:03:40And I'm thinking about William
00:03:41Are probably gonna have to run a three-stop strategy
00:03:44That's possible
00:03:45Because they want to take the extra weight off the car
00:03:48Rick
00:03:49Takuma Sato fans there
00:03:50Cheering their man on
00:03:51The question is
00:03:52Will he finally get himself a pole today?
00:03:54Now, Steve
00:03:55Take us around the track
00:03:56With a Porsche track man
00:03:57Alright, let's have a look
00:03:58Where we are at this track
00:03:59It's the circuit Gilles Villeneuve
00:04:01Just over 2.7 miles
00:04:0370 racing laps
00:04:04You can see
00:04:05It's very technically challenging
00:04:06It's got a long straight
00:04:08Which means you want to run
00:04:09Minimal downforce on the car
00:04:10To really get the car up to speed very quick
00:04:12But look at either end
00:04:13I mean that pits hairpin there
00:04:15T2
00:04:16Just after the second intermediate flag
00:04:18Incredibly tight
00:04:19That's where you want the downforce on the car
00:04:21But all the tight chicanes
00:04:22Down to the bottom left of the picture
00:04:24Around the centre hairpin
00:04:25And the Pont de la Concorde
00:04:26And the turns eight and nine
00:04:28Where you see the Olympus bridge
00:04:30That little bridge
00:04:31Where they go under
00:04:32And the camera shot change
00:04:33Is incredibly hard on brakes here
00:04:35We've seen cars
00:04:36Like no end last year
00:04:37Both the Williams and Ferrari
00:04:39Struggling with brake wear
00:04:40And we're already hearing reports
00:04:42Well this year
00:04:43The teams are giving great concern
00:04:45About the condition of the brakes
00:04:46That's going to affect
00:04:47The performance in qualifying
00:04:48I wouldn't be at all surprised
00:04:49If we don't see
00:04:50Very quick times from Williams
00:04:52By virtue of them
00:04:53Running less fuel on board
00:04:54In fact you were concerned
00:04:55They were actually over cooling
00:04:56Their brakes earlier
00:04:57Could well be
00:04:58Yeah
00:04:59Alright well we'll talk about that
00:05:00In a moment
00:05:01But right now we understand
00:05:02Jimmy Bruni
00:05:03Has made his way back to the garage
00:05:04Will indeed be getting into his car
00:05:06To qualify
00:05:07So when we come back
00:05:08Zolt Baumgartner
00:05:09And Jimmy Bruni is qualifying
00:05:10Don't go away
00:05:11To qualify a Formula One World Championship
00:05:16Brought to you by BMW
00:05:17BMW
00:05:18BMW
00:05:19The ultimate driving machine
00:05:21All right
00:05:22All right qualifying in Canada
00:05:27For the Canadian Grand Prix
00:05:28On the Ile de Notre Dame
00:05:29The Gilles Villeneuve circuit
00:05:31Finally about to begin
00:05:32We were talking about the weather comparison
00:05:36Between this year and last year Steve
00:05:38In fact that last year
00:05:40In Saturday
00:05:41Overcast
00:05:42Temperature
00:05:43Not very high at all
00:05:44Not significantly warmer
00:05:45But definitely warmer
00:05:46And much clearer skies
00:05:47And sunshine out there this year
00:05:48Yeah and the track
00:05:49Improves an awful lot here
00:05:50When it gets some heat into it
00:05:51These ties
00:05:52It's all about the tie war Rick
00:05:54As we've been saying all year long
00:05:55And for the last couple of years
00:05:56But I mean to have dropped the time
00:05:58From last year to this
00:05:59Already in provisional qualifying
00:06:00By 3.3 seconds
00:06:01Is just absolutely staggering
00:06:03Of course a lot of that down to the heat
00:06:05In the track
00:06:06Both Michelin and Bridgestone
00:06:08Now like to have a lot of heat
00:06:09In the track
00:06:10And the ties are working very well
00:06:11Bruni here
00:06:12We're watching out in
00:06:13Watching the Minardia
00:06:14And this is his primary road car
00:06:16He is not in the spare car
00:06:17So at the moment he is not
00:06:19Going to be suffering with the penalty
00:06:22For an engine change
00:06:23By virtue of using the spare
00:06:26As we showed you just a moment ago
00:06:27He rolled to a stop
00:06:28During his pre-qualifying run
00:06:30But really that's the only serious problem
00:06:31That he's had all weekend long
00:06:33Well I mean it
00:06:34For these guys
00:06:35It's just a matter of keep running
00:06:36Frankly I mean
00:06:37They're not going to be challenging
00:06:38For the race win
00:06:39They're not going to be challenging
00:06:40For the championship drivers
00:06:41Or constructors
00:06:42But of course they're searching
00:06:43For reliability like everybody else
00:06:45But frankly if they didn't
00:06:46Have to use a spare car
00:06:47And change engine
00:06:48And start at the back of the grid
00:06:49How's it going to affect them
00:06:50Where they're going to be anyway
00:06:51Would anybody know
00:06:52In fact there was a criticism
00:06:53Last year when they first
00:06:54Decided to come out with the role
00:06:55The point being that
00:06:56Why would anybody in the back
00:06:57In the back half of the grid
00:06:58Really care
00:06:59Doesn't matter whether you start
00:07:0015th or 20th
00:07:01If you go and get a chance
00:07:02To change an engine
00:07:03The only reason really
00:07:04Minardi don't want to change engine
00:07:05It's all down to budget
00:07:06They'd rather use the engine
00:07:07And save the pounds
00:07:08Put the dollars in the bank
00:07:09I think that's what they're after
00:07:10One must have priorities
00:07:12And
00:07:13Decided not to finish the lap
00:07:15Well I wonder whether or not
00:07:16That's what we're seeing
00:07:17Right here
00:07:18He's gone out and done his qualifying lap
00:07:19And
00:07:20In and they'll probably change the engine
00:07:22Or work on the car overnight
00:07:23And start the car from the pit lane
00:07:25We don't know
00:07:26Really to be honest
00:07:27They have the cars
00:07:28Have to go into Park Fermet
00:07:29Regardless of whether or not
00:07:30They complete the qualifying run
00:07:32They'll still want to put the car
00:07:33In Park Fermet
00:07:34And weigh it to make sure
00:07:35That it complies to the regulations
00:07:36Anyway
00:07:37It's all kind of
00:07:38Part of FIA's officialdom
00:07:39It'll make no difference
00:07:41Eddie Jordan
00:07:42You see him standing there
00:07:43He has a new man
00:07:44Qualifying this weekend
00:07:46Giorgio Pantano
00:07:47Apparently
00:07:48Yesterday's money problems
00:07:49Have carried over
00:07:50Through today
00:07:51And as a result
00:07:52Eddie Jordan is going to have
00:07:53Timo Glock in the car
00:07:54Timo
00:07:55During his first qualifying run
00:07:57His pre-qualifying run
00:07:58Earlier today
00:07:59Looked rather adventurous
00:08:00In that car
00:08:01His hands were all over
00:08:02That steering wheel
00:08:03And the car was swapping
00:08:04Back and forth
00:08:05He ultimately made a decent time
00:08:06At least for him
00:08:07Survived the lap
00:08:08So
00:08:10Lighten's ult
00:08:11Baumgartner
00:08:12Bruni's teammate
00:08:13Out in the system
00:08:14And out
00:08:15See how this fellow can do
00:08:17Yeah
00:08:18The Jordan chassis
00:08:19Look as you rightly say
00:08:21It just doesn't look smooth
00:08:23Anywhere
00:08:24When we talk about
00:08:25How smooth it is
00:08:26And smooth is quick
00:08:27And
00:08:28That's really the opposite end
00:08:30Of the scale
00:08:31That Jordan chassis
00:08:32Just looks awful
00:08:33I realize that
00:08:34Technically
00:08:35With this qualifying run
00:08:36He makes it
00:08:37Makes it
00:08:38And is able to
00:08:39Finish a lap ahead
00:08:40Once we get a qualifying time
00:08:41He will tie
00:08:42His teammate
00:08:43Jimmy Bruni
00:08:44Both of them
00:08:45Will have
00:08:46Bettered the other
00:08:47Four times this year
00:08:48I want to talk
00:08:49That Jimmy Bruni
00:08:50Was so much better
00:08:51Than Zolt Baumgartner
00:08:52Going into this season
00:08:53And yet Zolt
00:08:54Do that
00:08:55No he's done a fine job
00:08:57That's very true
00:08:58Down to the casino
00:08:59Hairpin
00:09:00Incredibly tight there
00:09:01You can see the change of asphalt
00:09:03The colour
00:09:04Right at the
00:09:05Right on the loop
00:09:06Of the hairpin there
00:09:07They changed the circuit
00:09:08A couple of years ago
00:09:09And reduced the length of the track
00:09:10To give a larger runoff
00:09:11For safety reasons
00:09:12Primarily
00:09:13Because of the problems
00:09:14With braking
00:09:15It's a very heavy braking zone
00:09:16Right underneath
00:09:17That little bridge
00:09:18At Olympus
00:09:19Turns eight and nine
00:09:20And last year
00:09:21If you remember
00:09:22You can see
00:09:23The brakes glowing red hot
00:09:24Right through that
00:09:25Eight and nine corner
00:09:26Down into the hairpin
00:09:27Puts a lot of strain
00:09:28Onto the brakes
00:09:29Zolt Baumgartner
00:09:30And the minority team
00:09:31Oh hang on there Zolt
00:09:32Qualifying here in Canada
00:09:33Zolt who finished ninth
00:09:34In Monaco
00:09:35And I was really
00:09:36And I realized
00:09:37He finished ninth
00:09:38Because he was
00:09:39The last car to finish
00:09:40But it would have been
00:09:41So nice
00:09:42To see the team
00:09:43Get at least one point
00:09:44Well I tell you what
00:09:45Even to finish the race
00:09:46To be stood in a car
00:09:47That is moving around
00:09:48The track
00:09:49At the end of the race
00:09:50And the race
00:09:51And the race
00:09:52To be stood in a car
00:09:53That is moving around
00:09:54The track
00:09:55At the end of the race
00:09:57Around the track
00:09:58At the end of the Monaco Grand Prix
00:09:59Is quite a feat in itself
00:10:00And if that's Team Minardi
00:10:01The struggling little
00:10:02The Anglo-Italian outfit
00:10:04And I think
00:10:05That's a great result
00:10:06Frankly
00:10:07Yeah the team
00:10:09Has not scored a point
00:10:10In 40 races now
00:10:18Right on board
00:10:27It's such a great sense of speed
00:10:42It was like they'd be hanging
00:10:43On that front wing
00:10:44Zipping down that straightaway
00:10:45For our first official qualifier
00:10:49For the day
00:10:50Provisional pole
00:10:51For the moment
00:10:52With a 117.064
00:10:55As I mentioned before
00:10:57He's now officially
00:10:58Outqualified his teammate
00:10:59Four times this year
00:11:00As Jimmy Bruni
00:11:01Has done the same with him
00:11:02And this
00:11:04Is Eddie Jordan
00:11:05Who's watching this guy
00:11:06Timo Glock
00:11:07Pressure very much
00:11:12On Timo Glock
00:11:13To perform
00:11:14And just
00:11:15Not to screw up
00:11:16Really
00:11:17I'm sure that's what
00:11:18Engineers will have told him
00:11:19Go out
00:11:20Do a time
00:11:21There's no need
00:11:22To be too courageous
00:11:23Don't go and do anything stupid
00:11:24Just bring the car back
00:11:25In one piece
00:11:29He's got his work
00:11:30But out in this year
00:11:31Hold on
00:11:38Hold on
00:11:45Timo Glock
00:11:46In the car
00:11:47Because of a management dispute
00:11:48Involving
00:11:49Giorgio Pantano
00:11:51He's trying to find a place
00:11:52To have that shunt
00:11:53Didn't he?
00:11:58Apparently
00:11:59It's not an issue
00:12:00That basically
00:12:01Eddie Jordan
00:12:02Has not been paid
00:12:03For Giorgio Pantano's ride
00:12:04For this weekend
00:12:05What we've heard
00:12:06Is not that the money
00:12:07Is not there
00:12:08But that there's a management
00:12:09Dispute going on
00:12:10Between
00:12:11Pantano's father
00:12:12And his current manager
00:12:13And as a result
00:12:14The money's just kind of
00:12:15Held in limbo
00:12:20Yesterday at one point
00:12:21We were told he was at the track
00:12:22And we were told he's not at the track
00:12:23And the result either way
00:12:24Is that he is not going to qualify
00:12:26And Timo Glock does
00:12:28For a brief moment
00:12:30He can say
00:12:31I held the pole
00:12:32For the Canadian Grand Prix
00:12:33I have a feeling
00:12:34He's going to lose it though
00:12:35Coming up
00:12:36We'll find out in a moment
00:12:37Canada
00:12:38Qualifying
00:12:39For the Canadian Grand Prix
00:12:40Underway
00:12:41Jordan number two
00:12:42Out on the track
00:12:43Right now
00:12:44This is Nick Heitfeld
00:12:45And Nick Heitfeld
00:12:46Coming down
00:12:47That casino straight
00:12:48To the last little
00:12:49Chicane before the start
00:12:50Finish straight
00:12:51Really working
00:12:52Turning the steering
00:12:53Left and right
00:12:54Leaning on the tires
00:12:55To try and get
00:12:56A lot of heat
00:12:57Into these tires
00:12:58Indicative probably
00:12:59That the team
00:13:00Are using the hard
00:13:01Compound tire
00:13:02Because
00:13:03With the way the Jordan
00:13:04Chassis moves around
00:13:05So much Rick
00:13:06It really starts to degrade
00:13:07The soft compound tires
00:13:08Too much
00:13:09You do get the extra grip
00:13:10Of course
00:13:11By using the softer tires
00:13:12But with the chassis
00:13:13Moving around so much
00:13:14It just starts to rip
00:13:15The things to pieces
00:13:16And I think probably Jordan
00:13:17Forced to use the harder
00:13:18Of the two compounds
00:13:19For that reason
00:13:20See the heat coming off the track
00:13:46There are rumors floating around the paddock
00:13:48This weekend
00:13:49That not only is Eddie Jordan
00:13:50Thinking about selling
00:13:51The team
00:13:52What he has left
00:13:54I guess
00:13:55But that it could be sold
00:13:56Before
00:13:58The British Grand Prix
00:14:00That some new owner
00:14:01Could come in and take over
00:14:02Completely
00:14:03And Nick Heitfeld
00:14:04Goes almost a second faster
00:14:06Than his teammate
00:14:07Timo Glock
00:14:09Christian Klien
00:14:10Now to the Jaguar
00:14:13These chaps
00:14:14I was looking at the times
00:14:15This morning
00:14:16They were doing a lot of laps
00:14:17The other Jaguar
00:14:20Of Mark Webber
00:14:2129 laps
00:14:22During the fourth
00:14:23Free practice session
00:14:24This morning
00:14:25Which kind of indicates to me
00:14:26That they're very confident
00:14:27In the reliability
00:14:28Of this engine
00:14:29Not concerned about
00:14:32Trying to conserve
00:14:33The engine at all
00:14:34Well that's good to see
00:14:36But of course
00:14:37They need to get the performance
00:14:38Out of the thing too
00:14:39Christian Klien
00:14:40One of four drivers
00:14:41Who has yet to score a point
00:14:42So far this season
00:14:43Just 21 years old
00:14:44Christian Klien
00:14:45One of four drivers
00:14:46Who has yet to score a point
00:14:47So far this season
00:14:48Just 21 years old
00:14:49Just 21 years old
00:14:50Just 21 years old
00:14:51And the steering on the car
00:14:53As it comes down into that tight
00:14:54Airpin
00:14:55And that's something we've been saying
00:14:56All weekend
00:14:57And I'm sure we'll continue to see
00:14:58Throughout the weekend
00:14:59The cars not wanting to run
00:15:00An awful lot of wing
00:15:01And therefore lack in aerodynamic grip
00:15:02But ahhh
00:15:04Forcing the car into the track
00:15:05Making the car very nervous
00:15:06Of not really
00:15:08Quantum of that
00:15:09car as it comes down into that tight air pin that's something we've been seeing a weekend
00:15:15and i'm sure we'll continue to see throughout the weekend the car's not wanting to run an
00:15:19awful lot of wing and therefore lacking an aerodynamic grip that aero forcing the car into
00:15:24the track making the car very nervous also they have the car very stiffly sprung around here as
00:15:32well but got enough for provisional pole course that will move as we start to see the bigger
00:15:37hitters out but that was fastest first sector time of the day as well 20.8 compare that to highfield's
00:15:45first sector time which is 24 8 but that was on the cool down yep fastest sector times in first second
00:15:52and third well don't forget the united states grand prix is only one week away but you still have time
00:15:58to reserve your tickets in fact you can contact the speedway ticket office at 1-800-822-INDY or check
00:16:03out the website at www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com and as we've been preaching for the last month
00:16:10with the purchase of the race day ticket you'll be given access to the walk on the pit lane on
00:16:15thursday morning in fact you're never ever going to get a better chance to get close to a formula
00:16:19one car unless you're driving they did that for the first time last year and the one thing i'll warn you
00:16:24is get there early remember getting into the track last year huge back of getting in if you're going
00:16:30to the walkabout get there early those are the guys who qualified more coming up weber and moss in a moment
00:16:37welcome back to speed channel's coverage of qualifying for the canadian grand prix
00:16:41richard rule steve match it here because david hobbs and bob bosch are off at le mans this
00:16:46weekend and speaking of le mans make sure you stay tuned right here on speed because immediately
00:16:51following our coverage of qualifying of course return you back to the michelin 24 hours of le mans
00:16:55this is the time though when things get interesting sun begins to set the cars start racing into the
00:17:00night you don't want to miss it once again the michelin 24 hours of le mans is next
00:17:11so mark weber that's what we're talking about have a look at the rear wing on these cars and you'll see
00:17:15this shot will give a great indication of it stopping it underneath the bridge how small relatively low
00:17:20the angle is of the wing
00:17:26a lot of speculation about this guy's future everybody seems to agree that he's probably
00:17:29not going to be a jaguar next year the question is where is he going to be is he going to be at
00:17:33williams is he going to be in toyota i think it's a fine guy i have to say i'm not hearing a bad word
00:17:38about him from the jaguar team he seems very committed to the team that is with good feedback and wants to
00:17:45integrate himself into the team and that makes a big difference you've got a driver that wants to
00:17:49become part of the team wants to talk to the people wants to converse with the mechanics and
00:17:54the engineers and find out what he can about how the cars put together and how the car set up
00:17:59boy you've got you've got something very special on your hands and i think that is mark weber right
00:18:02there i mean i rate him very highly in fact that's part of the problem he's having making his decision
00:18:07is he does have a strong loyalty to this team yeah i can understand that i mean they they've been very
00:18:11good to him as well and you know it's a two-way thing he's been very good to the team
00:18:15does that mean i want to see him remain at jaguar no i'd love to see him at williams
00:18:24you want to see him go fast see just what he's capable of doing yeah
00:18:32and there's a lot of questions about the future of the jaguar team as well so if you're a driver
00:18:36sitting there not knowing what's ultimately going to happen with the team who's going to be the sponsor
00:18:40that next year who's going to be the owner next year maybe it's best to uh move to slightly more
00:18:46stable ground if that's possible in formula one it's always a risk of course but oh a little too
00:18:52much understeer there soren trying to warm up the tires on that on the warm-up lap coming into this
00:19:01time lap look at the heat haze coming off the asphalt there it is certainly the truck's certainly got a
00:19:08lot of heat in it there's no doubt about that 321 kilometers through the speed trap
00:19:14all right how is he going to do compared to his teammate let's see he comes across the line and
00:19:19he is slower 199 miles an hour for the ford engine through there could well be rick as we always say
00:19:26and this is a conundrum we always have in qualifying his fuel loads we don't know the teams are not
00:19:30allowed to well the teams are allowed to tell they don't want to say um now ross bronze we were joking
00:19:36about earlier ross bronze a big believer that everybody should know he wants the media to know
00:19:39we're saying what they need is a giant fuel gauge on the side of the car yeah right this is the
00:19:43mistake that uh mark weber made i think more under braking what caught him out is him take his hand
00:19:48off the steering wheel i think in frustration with himself because what happens when they haven't got
00:19:52a sufficient downforce on the car to cope with that heavy braking you start to see the back end start
00:19:58to step out a little bit that's massa aborting his lap and going straight into park for may to be weighed
00:20:03felipe masa will not qualify for this race and will be starting from the back of the grid
00:20:08it's unfortunate because uh seemed like sauber was starting to sort of get it together in fact
00:20:13fisichella actually did very well in the in the pre-qualifying session earlier today masa was 16th
00:20:20in one of the sessions he was 16th in the second session he was 12th in the first session out this
00:20:25morning but he is not going to qualify now olivia panice is going to go out and qualify the toyota
00:20:33and because he's going to take his warm-up lap we've got a moment so we're going to take a break
00:20:42as well when we come back we'll have more from canada qualifying keep your posts on who is likely to
00:20:48get the pole here in just a moment back here in canada where the toyota of olivia panice out on the
00:20:57track right now getting ready to qualify remember this is the track where he had that massive massive
00:21:03shunt back in 1997 and there you see mark weaver's car getting rolled in but olivia panice had that
00:21:09massive shunt back when he was driving the pros broke both his legs remember looking at the front
00:21:14of that car it just looks so mangled you were amazed that he had legs left at all it was horrible the
00:21:18entire front of the chassis was more or less ripped up i think it was only the hard lines and the brake lines
00:21:23running in the chassis that was keeping the two parts of the tub the monocoque together and yeah
00:21:27he was extremely lucky to come out of that and be able to walk to this day
00:21:34well we're talking about futures a lot of speculation as to what's going to go on with the toyota team
00:21:38next year and who their drivers are going to be and i would hate to see this guy lose this ride it
00:21:43seems like he's done such a great job getting there and it seems like i one thing i think toyota could
00:21:47use would be some stability from year to year yeah well he's been around for a long while i don't know
00:21:53i don't know really what toyota want to do it the problem is if you replace drivers if you're not
00:21:59happy with the drivers you've who you've always got that that question of who do you replace them with
00:22:03and who's on the market and you've got to it's not so easy to say the drivers are at fault get rid of
00:22:08the drivers and let's have somebody else in who are you going to get to go in the car well there's always
00:22:14somebody on the horizon you know the grass is always greener on the other side the big name
00:22:18linked to that team these days has been uh ralph schumacher although mark weber's name has also
00:22:23been linked in talks with this team but as you said the question is are they really that much better
00:22:32because so much of how good somebody is and what they can prove is always connected to what car are
00:22:36they in absolutely and as you said earlier on rick really stability is what keeps a team driving
00:22:41forward if you're constantly changing the drivers and drivers have got different techniques and
00:22:45different ways of being comfortable in the car you can't really make progress from year to year you
00:22:50need to develop the car from year to year and that is why ferrari are now doing so well not just the
00:22:56driver's talent of michael schubacher and rubens barrichello but the car is a natural progression
00:23:01over the last three or four years you've just seen improvement after improvement whereas the other
00:23:05teams are sort of swapping and changing twin keel single keel swap the drivers change this and change that
00:23:11ferrari have had that continuity and it's made a massive difference to the team well the results
00:23:15speak for themselves olivier now moving into second spot behind christian clean now it's his teammate
00:23:20christiano damata and if anybody really seems to be on the bubble on that team it is christiano
00:23:25damata a lot of talk about whether he's going to be back next year as you were saying you know
00:23:29they've got mike es going now it would be nice to have some sense of consistency from this year to
00:23:34next so what these guys are learning and developing next year could this year could carry over to next
00:23:38to you absolutely now we're here that these guys are building a new shack new chassis a new monaco
00:23:43coming in a new mold and that'll be introduced i think around hockenheim um gascoigne saying that
00:23:48this ship's chassis is too heavy and they can't really get the aerodynamics to work on it and
00:23:51gascoigne's great strength this is an aerodynamicist he's technical director of the team at uh at toyota
00:23:56and remember he was technical director at renault and was i would say partly responsible and say
00:24:01entirely responsible for their resurgence as well and there's no doubt that his influence to the r23 and
00:24:07the r24 renault chassis is clear to see terrific aerodynamic lines on that and if the new chassis
00:24:12is uh toyota is anywhere half as successful as the renault car with the power that toyota have got in
00:24:17there and this lump is no slouch slump that's for sure they should be of course to be reckoned with
00:24:23providing you've got the skill
00:24:27ah the skill in the cockpit the question is does this guy have it christiano damata definitely proved he
00:24:32could do it in champ cars and in cart but he's never really been able to prove it here but some
00:24:38would say it's only because he hasn't had the car to prove it with and this car has definitely been
00:24:42the disappointment for the team this year but he just took the spot away from his teammate
00:24:48by three-tenths of a second
00:24:53so far we still have a jaguar on the pole that's christian clean but there's jean todd and his
00:24:58man rubens barriquello the first ferrari out on the track right now the first of the heavy hitters
00:25:03of the day rubens barriquello this morning in the practice sessions ended up p9 we did 10 laps and a
00:25:10best time of 9. very difficult to know what these guys are doing remember we've seen it at least twice
00:25:19now this year where barriquello has had um extra fuel on board and he's done the two-stop strategy
00:25:25for his teammate michael schumacher running a lighter fuel loader on three-stop and it makes a
00:25:31considerable difference there's no doubt about that if you if you go and do another what seven laps or so
00:25:36you're carrying a significant amount of fuel probably about 12 kilos 12 to 13 kilos will give about
00:25:42half a second difference between the cars a big lock up from barriquello there
00:25:48i wouldn't be at all surprised i mean we'll see how this plays out of course i wouldn't be surprised
00:25:52to see the ferraris running heavy here and probably both going for a two-stop and maybe the williams
00:25:58cars if they think they're in trouble with the brakes running light and going for a three-stop
00:26:01oh he locks up does that mean he's hit carrying a lot of fuel right there well he was braking very
00:26:10early and it's sure indicative that they've got a lot of fuel on board i wouldn't be surprised that
00:26:14all the engineers i've talked to are all being more than any other race so far this year because they
00:26:19are being incredibly coy about what's going up with fuel loads around here and as we said earlier on it's
00:26:25all to do with brakes they're they're all concerned about great wear throughout the race ross braun may
00:26:31say that he wants everybody to tell but he's not telling until everybody else is right rubens
00:26:35barriquello by almost a second has the provisional pole for the moment ahead of christian clean
00:26:42but uh as you said the way things are locking up you almost wonder what kind of fuel load he's
00:26:48carrying because he locked up pretty early it's typically we've seen the cars that have been running
00:26:51on a three-stop strategy coming in very early this year lap seven lap eight so to try and get a
00:26:57difference between a three-stop and a two-stop the difference in weight between the first stint
00:27:01is probably around about 13 kilos well you know that's a lot of weight penalty to carry on board
00:27:06in that opening stint so rubens barriquello is a 113.562 which is significantly off what was uh the
00:27:15fast times for the last session should point out he is qualified third here three times so he likes
00:27:21being that number three spot i think it's going to be pretty hard for him to hang on to that today
00:27:25well that's a good indication as to what the weather's like up there wouldn't you say yeah right well it's
00:27:28certainly very hot and very sunny but you can see the water behind and the entire island of the uh
00:27:34where the circuit is is surrounded by water and it's very prone to changes in wind direction the
00:27:40st lawrence seaway uh right at the side of the track i mean it's got a colossal tide in there with
00:27:45it we were talking about earlier on uh just before we came on air i remember one guy jumping off that
00:27:50bridge obviously drunk too much during the day and he gone he was under that water and gone in a flash
00:27:55and the st lawrence is on one side the olympic rowing basin is on the other side it's really just a
00:28:01little man-made spot of land that they stuck out there and it's the rest of the year it's not a
00:28:06racing circuit it's pretty much a park and this is their their big event of the year yeah all right
00:28:13all right we're gonna take a quick break as rubens barichello motors his way back
00:28:18we'll come back with more from canada in just a moment
00:28:27speed channel's coverage of the fia formula one world championship is brought to you by in canada
00:28:32kimmy raikkonen watching the monitors as this guy jean-carlo fisichella in the sauber out on the track
00:28:38right now actually a fairly decent qualifying effort from him in the pre-qualifying run
00:28:44that allows him to qualify in the second half of this group today
00:28:52he was 14th quickest this morning in the last of the free practice sessions
00:28:57the 14-9 and the engine's good i mean there's no doubt about that the the engine is the same
00:29:01specification engine watching his teammate matt's there wave to the camera of course those guys are
00:29:05seeing exactly the same shots as we're seeing on those monitors on their uh on the engineer's pit
00:29:10wall masa actually had an accident yesterday we were never able to see it during the practice but
00:29:17hit the wall and did some damage now he is not going to qualify for this race although he will
00:29:24compete and his teammate is out there trying to see what he can do to rubens barichello's time well you
00:29:29can see the problem with just going offline around here and we're talking about that in yesterday's
00:29:33practice show there is just no runoff error for a large majority of the track as we're saying by
00:29:38virtue of it being an island that the the track layout really follows the perimeter line around the
00:29:44around the island of biel notterdam and there are no runoff areas in many respects it's very much like
00:29:49a street track you can see the barriers very close inside and you don't need to make much of an error you
00:29:54only need to be about half a meter off your off your line and unlike other tracks where you've got that
00:29:57grass creek to save you it ain't here yeah that's specifically a problem coming out of this straight
00:30:05when you go on to the pitch straight and there's that little wall right just to the right and how
00:30:09many people have touched that already this week and i think timo glock's got a black mark on there
00:30:13right now we'll see and how many people have touched it over the years that's what we're talking
00:30:17about yeah and you can see a lot of dark marks on the side on that green painted asphalt and that's one
00:30:23reason why we see the safety car deployed so much during the canadian grand prix is because you know
00:30:29it's very difficult to have a minor shunt at this track you go into the wall and there's bits of
00:30:33carbon suspension all over the place and yeah you have to be very careful kimmy raikkonen
00:30:38Giancarlo Fisichella by the way third fastest that moves christiana damata down a spot but
00:30:43it leaves christian clean so far as second fastest for the day
00:30:46all right remember kimmy raikkonen last year had a problem qualifying here in fact
00:30:53this is exactly where he made his mistake going sliding off into the grass but this year he does it just
00:31:12remember this is the mp4 19 the mp4 19b still under development
00:31:36they didn't take david coltard's suggestion and bring it for the u.s and the canadian grand prix's
00:31:43well i can understand his frustration in the old car but you've got to have sufficient
00:31:48material to build the car you've got to have sufficient supplies and spares to be able to run
00:31:52a new car as well david just wanted the car i didn't care if kimmy got it he just wanted it
00:31:56of course we're going to learn more about the mp4 19b during tomorrow's accurate pre-race show peter
00:32:02windsor's got a special story about that meanwhile let's see what kimmy raikkonen can do he is second
00:32:07fast just knocks christian clean back but leaves ruben barrakello as the pole sitter for the time
00:32:11being john todd says okay i'll take that for the time being we'll take a brief break and come back
00:32:17with more from canada right after this
00:32:28if michael's carrying significantly more fuel and is intended to stop out and do this two-stop
00:32:33strategy could expect him to be about as much as 0.7 off the qualifying pole setting time well at the
00:32:40moment barrakello his teammates got that at a 13.5 the next non-ferrari car kimmy raikkonen and
00:32:46mclaren also a 13.59 so there he is he's down on that intermediate two by 0.3
00:32:55oh man i would love to know how much fuels on this car you want a giant fuel gauge we're talking about
00:33:00on the side of the car with a big needle that swings back and forth it could tell you exactly
00:33:04what is there 340 kph through the speed track
00:33:07okay he should get pole here and he does by only two tenths of a second though remember he was up
00:33:16three cents in that first split yeah right that's 211 miles an hour through the speed track for the
00:33:21ferrari engine he does take pole you're right and he but it does the fastest second sector time of
00:33:28the day 23.4 but he was 0.3 off earlier on and i don't think he's taking it by enough to take it for
00:33:35the day a little bit much locked it up very slightly all right now it's time for one of
00:33:43the BARs this one's jensen button a lot of talk going into this race that one of the BARs would
00:33:48end up on the pole at the beginning of the season everybody assumed that jensen was going to be the
00:33:53man to win the first race for BAR he took the first pole but some of the momentum seems to have
00:33:58swung to his teammate takuma sada well takuma sada is quick there's no doubt about that it just
00:34:05needs to be controlled so far he uh jensen button significantly faster by about three and a half
00:34:14tenths of a second 35 hundredths of a second faster than michael schumacher
00:34:22i expected BAR honda oh look at that michael is still on the track just barely ahead of him
00:34:29yeah we saw this at the last race as well where michael was very slow in that cool down lap coming
00:34:35off but shouldn't be a problem for button michael will move off to the right because that's the
00:34:41entrance to the pits button will swing out onto the front straightaway get as close as he can to that
00:34:48wall take up all the track and let's see what jensen button does across the line he has the pole by
00:34:54more than a second wow and he was slow through that speed trap certainly relative to the ferrari
00:34:59he's like 210 so he is down on speed david richards very happy with that he says you know i think we
00:35:06may have ourselves a pole here gentlemen jensen button
00:35:13and remember takuma sada is still to come out there jensen button fastest of the day through sector one
00:35:1920.2 and through sector two 23 dead now it is time for david coltard mclaren number two to hit the
00:35:30track see if he can take something away from jensen button but i think he's going to be pretty hard pressed
00:35:37well these guys will just be pleased to come away with a race result i think and managed to get the
00:35:41car to the end of the race i understand the piston specification the mercedes v10 has gone back to
00:35:48piston specs they were using at barcelona because of the problems they had at the nurberg ring
00:35:53norbert how very unhappy apparently that mario alien had decided to
00:35:57change the spec of the pistons apparently without his consent or permission i don't know and i don't
00:36:02really understand why norbert how feels the need to tell us that but uh those things should be conducted
00:36:07behind closed doors but if that's improved the reliability by by going back a step then great
00:36:12fantastic that's what the team needs the team seems to feel that they actually had a batch of bad material
00:36:17that made two batches of pistons and as a result they think by eliminating that that they can
00:36:23solve that problem but that's just one of a number of problems that they have faced
00:36:38all right here he goes across the line david coltard can he take the poll more importantly can
00:36:42and beat his teammate no he can't beat his teammate right now he is fifth on the grid right behind
00:36:47kimmy raikkonen he was well down on speed trap pace coming through that speech up
00:36:55around about 308 excuse me 208 miles an hour
00:37:02but again i think these guys have got to be incredibly cautious
00:37:04they're in kind of damage limitation mode to an expect until that new car comes out
00:37:12which you know how similar in some ways is this season the last season i mean except for the fact
00:37:17that kimmy raikkonen had some luck and finished some races but ultimately all last year they were
00:37:21talking about oh you know when when the next car is ready when the next car is ready and you don't
00:37:25want to be waiting for the next car you want the current car to be working absolutely when you talk
00:37:30about technical directors say this is the best formula one car i have seen i've worked on one
00:37:34of the new cars launched well frankly it should be i mean you wouldn't expect a technical director
00:37:39to turn around and say well the car i've just made is not quite as good as the one from last year
00:37:43it would make any sense we're just seeing a shot there one of those bars that's the final chicane
00:37:47before you come on to the start finish straight and there's a look at the hairpin you can see the
00:37:51asphalt change there where they've reduced the the acute rundown to the uh the hairpin right there
00:37:57as david coltar continues to bring it in we're going to take a brief break we'll come back with
00:38:02more specifically the renos in just a moment
00:38:12don't forget to join us tomorrow for live coverage of the canadian grand prix we'll kick
00:38:16things off at 12 o'clock eastern time that's noon remember that's a little earlier because of the
00:38:20euros 2004 soccer game the actor pre-race show will be then and then we'll head live straight
00:38:26through to the post-race interviews where our own peter winder will again be asking the questions
00:38:30and for the second straight year we'll be happy to have townsend bell join us for the canadian
00:38:33grand prix again that's tomorrow at noon live and only here on speed however this event is subject to
00:38:40blackout llano truly rick and this morning's fasting everyone for this morning's practice sessions
00:38:47was incredibly quick both the renos were very quick they have a new specification engine they came out
00:38:53with a new specific engine engine in imola a b-spec there they've altered it again now so this is the
00:38:59third upgrade from the start of the year the camera's concentrated on car number 10 there that's
00:39:04sato's bar is coming out soon but this renault engine is reportedly got more horsepower more
00:39:11drivability i was talking to alan permain only this morning truly's race engineer and he was saying no
00:39:15problems with the engine we're happy we're very fine with it truly had a problem with the steering
00:39:22system on the car yesterday which meant it was a little bit off the pace but we should be seeing
00:39:27great things from this team today and that was the talk through all the last year they kept saying
00:39:31you know they've got the chassis if they only had the horsepower and if they finally have the horsepower
00:39:37anything is possible i think they're still down on horsepower certainly relative to the big hitters
00:39:41ferrari and and honda for example but what they do have is great talk on this thing which is helping
00:39:47them get that launch control or the legal system of launch on it now launch control per se is banned
00:39:53under the technical regulations but they're using the torque of the engine to great effect
00:39:58that uh that pseudo launch control i guess we'll call it on on the renault is absolutely fabulous
00:40:09especially saw that at monaco yeah the launch control at the the low-end torque really helping
00:40:14that car around monaco where you need all that punch out of the slow speed corners and to an extent
00:40:19this track has got that similar characteristics yeah unlike monaco it's got great long straights but
00:40:25the slow corners right here wait for it wait for it pow that's what you need to put it down and the
00:40:31engine works fabulously on that renault chassis you've got to get smoothly through that hairpin unlike
00:40:36mark weber blocking it up just before and rubens barichello locked it up as well you want to get
00:40:40smoothly through there so you can carry what little speed you've got every little bit helps at the other
00:40:44end right that's exactly what jano truly has just done remember he had a 112.629 in the second practice
00:40:51session today and he does not take the pole jensen button still has it but he is faster than michael schumacher
00:41:03now there's a lot of attention being focused this weekend on this guy as always but on the second
00:41:11bar driver and that's takuma sato and you're joking earlier about the british press that just loves
00:41:15to feed on british drivers and already saying oh jensen's confidence is being shaken by this guy
00:41:20takuma sato everybody expected bar to finally get a win and now is it going to be sato and what will
00:41:26that do to jensen button i think jensen button does have to watch out i think button is naturally quick
00:41:32and very gifted driver but certainly this man right here his race engineer jock clear same engineer that
00:41:39worked with jack villner but williams and with bear throughout his entire career bureau is a very
00:41:45gifted engineer and these two together seem to be getting a very close relationship together
00:41:51you get the driver and the engineer hooked up with the power in the chassis to match good tires on the
00:41:55car you should expect to see some good results and he's fearless this guy is fearless we saw that with
00:42:01barichello the movie made okay some would say it was silly it was quickest him set to one there look
00:42:07sliding a little bit of sliding right there and that may cost him
00:42:13yeah in fact that was part of the problem the first year that he was in formula one he was just
00:42:17a little more bravery than reason at times kind of like massa you know you need to get him under your
00:42:21wing like like uh massa went to ferrari and did that test session with him and tested with him and
00:42:26calmed him down a little bit that's what sato needs and if he can gel with a team there you see he's down
00:42:31by almost half a second and that's an awful lot to gain in his last sector
00:42:43this is what's on your engine right there just as it goes past the speed truck time three
00:42:48oh he slides it same way wow i don't think it's going to be a great time but i'll give him credit
00:42:55for finishing i'll tell you what if sato missed that green wall we're talking about i'll give him
00:42:59all the praise in the world i don't know how we did it but the car is clearly unlocked and his time is
00:43:06faster than zolt bomb gardeners oh my goodness gracious that's just about the spot last year
00:43:13where montoya did it but uh let's have a look at it rick where did he lose it now how did he not hit the
00:43:20wall a little bit of uh carbon oh he couldn't have come much closer on the outside and then just collects
00:43:27it up and says what spin i didn't see a spin did you going to show you oh by about what 12 inches a
00:43:34little bit of diffuser rate got broken away from the car but wow you know i thought he looked pretty
00:43:40quick going into that i didn't realize how fast you're absolutely right it's very easy to be quick
00:43:46going into this you can't it's how you get out of it that's the that's the that's the skill you need
00:43:50all right another threat for the pole another threat to take it away from jensen button is this
00:43:55guy fernando alonso but right now he is a couple of tenths slower in the first sector remember jensen
00:44:02button who has one pole so far this year on the pole for the moment it's a heavy braking zone turns eight
00:44:11and nine now that dive down to the hairpin
00:44:19oh significantly slower now let's talk fuel load right here
00:44:23i have severe doubts that he's going to even beat his teammate
00:44:39fernando alonso is going to come around there you see that body work that little piece of carbon
00:44:42fiber that was left when takuma sato made his spin nobody ever bothered to go pick that up
00:44:47and he is third fastest ahead of michael schumacher but behind jensen button and his teammate yarno trulli
00:44:54and there somebody finally went out and got that piece of carbon fiber okay who is going to have
00:44:59the pole will it be a williams we'll find out in a moment senator right now one pablo montoya out on
00:45:06the track his first shot taking the pole away his shot for the day remember he was on the pole here two
00:45:13years ago these guys in practice in fourth practice were frighteningly quick through the speed track
00:45:21213 miles an hour they were registering as they were clipping that timing beam
00:45:28saw a very interesting picture right before the session began as we were getting the feed before
00:45:33it was being fed out over television of juan pablo montoya talking with ron dennis yes in very close
00:45:40discussion we were wondering was he saying i've changed my mind i don't want to go there or
00:45:45does it actually tell me what you're doing with the car for next year have a look at the brake
00:45:49looks on this path you can see on the inside of the rims in between the two suspension arms the
00:45:53wishbones they are very big this is what we're talking about earlier on when we get another shot
00:45:57of the car head on have a look see if you can see how big the brake looks are much bigger than any
00:46:02other track it's difficult to see because it's such a dark area of the car down there and i think
00:46:06that's a response to the problems they had last year i'm sure but uh i wouldn't be at all surprised
00:46:13as we're saying if they're just over cooling the brakes let's see what he does across the
00:46:17line montoya is third fastest moving alonzo back and he is going to leave the pole to either jensen
00:46:24button or his teammate ralph schumacher that was last year's pole sitter could he get two in a row
00:46:32i think that little mistake that he made going down to the hairpin was enough to cause him problems
00:46:38yes now three stops or two stops williams i kind of have to think that chassis is not capable of
00:46:44outperforming the aerodynamics on the on the ferrari chassis just on on pace alone i've got to think
00:46:51that the the fuel strategy is coming into play here anyway let's see how his teammate does as well and
00:46:58we'll get a better idea of how this is going to play out in the first stint tomorrow the problem
00:47:03is when you've got when the brakes are wearing so much you carry the extra fuel for a two-stop
00:47:08strategy it's just too much of a weight penalty because under braking you've got that extra weight
00:47:13to compensate for as well so you want the car if you've got problems with brakes and you know you have
00:47:18you want to keep the car as lightweight as possible the only way to do that is to run less fuel in the car
00:47:23more stops the secret here quite frankly is just not to make a mistake so far he's a tenth off
00:47:36but that's not a whole heck of a lot and it is attainable depending on what he does the rest of
00:47:40the way very little rear wing on the back of this fw26 on ralph's car as well it almost looks like a
00:47:45wristless cigarette paper in an element still a little over tenth off the question is we've talked
00:47:53about that bmw engine how much power it has i guess this is the test who's got more the bmw engine or
00:47:59the honda engine i'd say the honda i think bmw have gone off the boil a little bit sacrificing some horsepower
00:48:04for reliability 337 through the speed trap 209 miles an hour and this morning they were two
00:48:16across the line he does it he gets the pole ralph schumacher by 66 thousandths of a second
00:48:25yeah good job that was an amazing run in the final sector jensen button came so close i don't think jensen
00:48:31but i think he thought he had it especially a look at ralph schumacher i think he is surprised
00:48:36that he's got and that was the fastest second sector time of the day 23 dead but also did a 23
00:48:42so it went down to over two decimal places but that sector two is all about that straight line speed
00:48:50jensen can console himself by saying that he will be starting on the front row
00:48:55but other than that he saw the pole slip away from him at the last possible moment this is going
00:49:01to make for a very interesting opening start opening stint to tomorrow's race i'll tell you
00:49:06actually that's a very interesting grid when you look at it because you've got a williams bmw and a
00:49:11bar on the front row you've got a renault and a williams bmw on the second row you've got a renault
00:49:17and a ferrari on the third row a ferrari and a mclaren on the fourth row it's uh you know mixed up
00:49:26nicely i would say the two ferraris schumacher and barichello six and seven well we know the
00:49:35car's very good we know it's got great horsepower and we know barichello and michael have no problems
00:49:39at all with driving the car well so how is that going to play out tomorrow i think we're going to
00:49:45see some very interesting work going off in the pits for ralph schumacher that will be his highest
00:49:50qualifying start for the year remember he had the good qualifying that was thrown out as a result of
00:49:56having to change an engine as a result he had to move back on the grid this will be the first time
00:50:01that he started up obviously on the pole number one but the best qualifying officially up until this
00:50:07point was in bahrain where he qualified fourth and you have to think this takes a little bit of a mental
00:50:13pressure off him you know here's a guy who's shopping himself around for a job next year
00:50:17and frank williams everybody's one palo montoya yesterday said of course he's gone i would pretty
00:50:23much bet he's not going to be here frank williams has pretty much said he's gone the question is where
00:50:26is he going to be and has he signed the contract or is he still negotiating the contract because if
00:50:31you're still negotiating that contract and you're not qualifying on a pole and you're not winning races
00:50:36it's pretty hard to have very much of a bargaining position yeah absolutely and uh well we don't know
00:50:43what what what ralph schumacher's done with his contract but however at the moment well he is on
00:50:47pole there's no doubt about that for the canadian grand prix a 112.275 that is fantastic i have to say
00:50:53and that is a new pole record here remember the pole record goes back to juan pablo montoya back in 2002
00:51:00that was a 112.836 jensen button came oh so close 66 thousandths of a second separating himself and ralph
00:51:10schumacher yeah how do you engineer 66 thousandths of a second onto the car takuma sato what a
00:51:16disappointment there you know a he made that one mistake early on and then that big spin but think
00:51:21about that he's still qualified faster than zolt baumgartner even with the spin timo glock qualified
00:51:27for his first race look at that qualifying 16th in the place of giorgio pentano meanwhile you've got
00:51:34felipe masa jimmy bruni who didn't set a time we'll be back right after this
00:51:47this is the 2004 pro formula mazda
00:51:53powered by the high output renaissance rotary engine
00:51:56the same engine is in the 2004 mazda rx-8 in fact the most obvious difference between them is
00:52:05this one has a bigger muffler mazda rx-8 the sports car with the engine of a race car
00:52:12the thrill of white knuckle driving obviously came from someone with white knuckles

00:53:47literally hundreds of miles of dirt trails we talked to the guy who unlocked it for you to ride and
00:53:52motorcycle suspension that's two wheel tuesday eight easter nine pacific only on speed
00:53:57qualifying is finished for the canadian grand prix and it is ralph schumacher who has taken the poll
00:54:05just ahead and i mean just barely ahead of jensen button and the bar who thought he'd come up with
00:54:10his second poll of the year but ralph schumacher had come away with his first there you see jensen
00:54:14button right afterwards going did he really do that can he do that check the rule books yeah
00:54:19can he do that yes well he certainly did do that and well done to him too i have to say however you
00:54:24know as we keep saying how much fuel is on the car well that'll play out tomorrow but nevertheless he
00:54:28he and his team will get the press coverage they will be in the press conference and his picture
00:54:32will be splashed over every newspaper in europe tomorrow for taking the pole position here in
00:54:37canada and you don't see much emotion out of ralph schumacher with with michael you see that
00:54:41occasional jump you see some enthusiasm ralph always very hold it when he kind of moved his hands
00:54:45up at the end there that was that was a lot of emotion that was huge it was huge for ralph schumacher
00:54:51so now all the cars into park fermet and they will be weighed measured and make sure they all
00:54:59conform and the teams are not allowed to work on them overnight no longer allowed to change the
00:55:03gearbox or in fact any suspension parts on the car at all not allowed to change the engine of course
00:55:07because it's a one engine rule throughout the race weekend so very easy night really for the teams
00:55:12of engineers and mechanics come six o'clock they will be partying in downtown montreal unlike your day
00:55:18when you had to work all through the night to get the car ready for the next day well it's all
00:55:22different in my day of course i was real racing you know there you see the top three drivers who
00:55:27are heading for the interview room and of course our own peter windsor is going to ask him questions
00:55:31in a moment very unique situation when you've got michael schumacher out amongst the hordes of
00:55:36reporters right getting interviewed you know by just the throngs as opposed to having to sit in the
00:55:40controlled session which is the fia interview that happens afterwards yeah we're joking it's a it's a it's an
00:55:47easy life for the mechanics on saturday night now they never knew what downtown montreal looked like
00:55:51in the past no in fact i was talking to the renault guys of the day and they were saying their engine
00:55:55fitter matt aldridge who's been with the team for a long while has actually taken voluntary redundancy
00:55:59this year because his services are no longer required there's no engine kit needed because they're
00:56:03only using one engine throughout the weekend so he took the big payoff and caught the 747 frost
00:56:07strudel he'd gone baby boom living the good life
00:56:13very wide pit lane there rick isn't it i always think that it kind of compare that to how it used
00:56:18to be at monaco right the monaco pit lane is about as wide as the red strip running down the middle
00:56:23there it was i mean you're not joking that's exactly how wide it was and once again if you have not been
00:56:28to a grand prix yeah the u.s grand prix is a great event but canada is a great event to go to you got
00:56:33you got to contend with some huge crowds getting on and off that island as we've talked about
00:56:37but the downtown is absolutely wonderful the main where they have all the restaurants the night
00:56:41clubs great place to go party and have a good time on the weekend and the canadian fans really love
00:56:47this race a lot of knowledgeable people a lot of friendly people up there and they get into this
00:56:51event now going through customs is a bit of an adventure but that's another story completely
00:56:55once again waiting for peter windsor and our top three ralph schumacher jensen button and
00:56:59yarner truly in the interview room
00:57:08and if you keep looking down beyond casino down the beyond that straightaway is the the secondary
00:57:14garage area where the atlantics used to hold their events the formula bmw this week kind of
00:57:18a secondary garage area that will be back in there and so what they have to do is they would have to
00:57:22take little transporters little mini transporters haul all their stuff all the way down that that
00:57:27straight away and into there now let's go and listen to ralph schumacher in the 2004 grand prix of
00:57:32canada third quickest for renault jano truly second quickest for lucky strike bar honda jensen button
00:57:38and on the pole for bmw williams for the first time for the team this year ralph schumacher ralph
00:57:43two great laps fastest in pre-qualifying and then right at the end there pole position
00:57:49well i must admit i mean we're honestly a bit surprised uh i had a big struggle to start with on
00:57:54friday due to brakes or brake problems and well the team simply did a great job we just got the car
00:58:01right uh honestly we did not expect to be as strong but i mean already after michael was out i thought
00:58:07well this could be a rather good one but not pole position i didn't expect that when did it all start
00:58:13together was it this morning or work on the car last night actually the first qualifying it started to
00:58:19to feel the first time the car started to feel right to me to push really to be able to get the
00:58:24best out of it at some little mistakes in there but it didn't cost me anything really so um you know
00:58:30we expected to be somewhere maybe in the top five but uh fourth to six or something and it looks like
00:58:36a very good lap quick on the sectors and also quick in terms of top speed uh yes i mean we we know
00:58:42already i mean everybody knows that in montreal you need the straight line speed so it's always a
00:58:47compromise i think we we did that quite well sector times well i think they were pretty good it's
00:58:52always easy to make a mistake like takumas you know just touch the curbs a bit too much and you get
00:58:57thrown off but luckily it didn't happen well congratulations thank you jensen i guess for a
00:59:02while there you probably thought you had the pole again yeah it was a for me i enjoyed it very much
00:59:08the lap i made a little mistake in the hairpin which probably cost me a bit of time but yeah thank you
00:59:13uh but um no it was a very good lap and to be a second quicker than michael you know for us we were
00:59:19we're very happy with that um and it was good to get some some cars between us really and then ralph
00:59:25came along and uh pipped me at the end so it's made the start very difficult for me because i've got
00:59:31jano starting right behind me what was that mistake you made into the hairpin and also what do you think
00:59:37about the antics of your teammate right at the end of his lap yeah i just um i think i just braked a
00:59:42bit late and uh locked the front right slightly cost me a bit of time but you know that's part of it
00:59:47and i was pushing very hard uh taku i'm not really sure i haven't seen his lap but i heard that
00:59:54he made a mistake in the last corner yeah did a nice 360 and kept going congratulations jano first
01:00:01question i guess is how the voice is it is getting better but obviously i'm struggling since long
01:00:06time especially since monaco victory so it's a bit frustrating because i cannot really talk much with
01:00:13the journalists but um i'm feeling okay and i'm showing it that i'm feeling okay well 0.7 away you
01:00:19are p3 of course but 0.7 away it's quite a margin you're right i mean i'm somehow surprised and
01:00:27disappointed because when i first came here in canada i didn't think we could have been so quick
01:00:34in fact we have been quick all yesterday and today but i didn't expect these two guys to go so quick
01:00:40during qualifying so sometimes it's quite a lot of gap we'll see tomorrow because the strategy could be
01:00:47the biggest biggest difference could well be strategy ralph as you say your brother is um is down in p6
01:00:55this weekend what are your thoughts on that and do you think you have a realistic great chance of
01:00:59winning tomorrow well i mean from where we are yeah definitely you have a good chance of having a
01:01:05great race uh concerning michael i think ferrari realized that the mid-chain runners were particularly
01:01:11quick in the first laps or first few laps so i guess um you know they uh obviously changed their
01:01:17strategy a bit i don't think that ferrari all of a sudden being the quickest car by a long way is
01:01:22um a second slower than us i don't have difficulty to believe that but i'm sure michael is going to
01:01:27have a great race but from where he is it's a bit difficult again you know you need to get past first
01:01:32and i'd be surprised how they're going to do that it'll be a very close race and a very interesting
01:01:36first corner thank you now if we could have some words from you yeah that first corner here in
01:01:40montreal is always very interesting a lot of break lock up and the question is will michael be able to
01:01:45survive it big advantage up front if there is one track that the williams team knows well it is got to
01:01:58be montreal because so far they've gotten three straight poles here this is their eighth hole since
01:02:03the grand prix moved here and this is the lap that ralph schumacher did it with today
01:02:07well it was a great lap you can't take that away from him i don't want to sort of keep bringing up
01:02:15the question of fuel and taking away from the performance of the team and the driver it worked
01:02:20very well the chassis is handling very well around here very little wing on the car as you can see
01:02:25see how stable it is under braking there
01:02:39got a lot of frantic steering input rick either from the driver nice and controlled and that's the
01:02:44thing that's always going to be the indication of how well the chassis is working smooth is quick
01:02:49and we saw a lot of people having problems going into that hairpin
01:02:52ralph schumacher obviously not one of them 337 through the speed track so he said wasn't the
01:03:00the fastest speed track time of the day and they were much quicker than that in in in the morning
01:03:03they were 343 ralph schumacher's 213 up to 209 but nevertheless there it is right there that's pole
01:03:11position for the canadian grand prix 2004 and interesting because he was slower in the first
01:03:16two sectors than jensen button but in that last sector is where he pulled it out ralph schumacher
01:03:22hugs his head he can't believe it he's got himself a pole this year we'll be back
01:03:30welcome back time for everybody's favorite crank up the volume for the sounds of speed

01:05:23qualifying is over on the il de notre dame and ralph schumacher has his second pole in the
01:05:42roll the third time the team has gotten it this year but think about this the last two times
01:05:46they got the pole they didn't win the race
01:05:48yeah there you go well jensen button will line up alongside him in second position jensen button
01:05:52just point six or one mile an hour slower than ralph schumacher through the speed track and i'm
01:05:57saying that made the difference between the pole on pablo montoya in fourth michael schumacher back in
01:06:03sixth
01:06:11and then jim carlo fizichella in the salvo followed by 12th spot christiano de mata in the
01:06:16toyota the first of toyotas and then the sister car right behind b13 olivier panisch
01:06:21point two six one six off the pace mark weber back behind his teammate timo glock qualifying
01:06:25for his first grand prix in 16th takuma sato had that spin but still managed to make it into
01:06:30the race ahead of his old bomb gartner jimmy bruni and felipe masa finish up so that's going to
01:06:34do it for qualifying from the candidate canadian grand prix but we've seen ralph schumacher get
01:06:39the pole don't forget to join steve myself and our special guest townsend bell that's tomorrow
01:06:43for live coverage of the canadian grand prix it'll start at noon remember that's noon a little
01:06:46bit early eastern time as always we'll start things off with the accurate pre-race show
01:06:50and at 12 30 the cars will roll off for the canadian grand prix so for steve match and i'm
01:06:55rick debruel we expect to see you back here tomorrow for the canadian grand
01:07:01jensen button took the early provisional pole with a lap of 112.314 then yarno truly in the reno
01:07:08could not top button and settled for third the button's teammate takuma sato threw away any chances
01:07:15of paul with this spin but he was able to save it and amazingly enough hit nothing let's
01:07:20take another look and see just how close he came to hitting the wall can't get much closer than that
01:07:26now it looked like button had his second career pole until ralph schumacher last year's pole sitter
01:07:31and the winner here in 2001 put down a lap of 112.275 to earn his fifth career pole it was yet another
01:07:38circuit record so there is a schumacher on the pole it's just not michael he was a full second slower than
01:07:44his brother juan pablo montoya starts fourth ahead of fernando alonso rubens barriquello starts seventh
01:07:50and could have out qualified his teammate but he had a small error in the midsection of his qualifying
01:07:56lap and here's the rest of the starting grid notice timo glock in 16th for jordan the test driver
01:08:01is filling in for giorgio pentano who is not in the car because of management issues affecting
01:08:07sponsorship money momentum from a sold-out canadian race could spill over to indy where attendance has
01:08:12dipped since the inaugural usgp in two thousand more than eighty thousand fans were expected for
01:08:18today's qualifying in montreal speed's peter windsor has one of the best spots on the circuit here's
01:08:23his report from the paddock bnw williams ralph schumacher seized a dramatic and last minute pole
01:08:29position from bar honda's jenson button in the canadian grand prix at montreal
01:08:34well you always try to prove uh it just some simply sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't
01:08:42and unfortunately nuburg ring it didn't monaco did already but uh you know he did again but
01:08:48then you know it's only qualifying let's wait and see how it is tomorrow
01:08:53our strategy i think is is good you know it's uh we've been thinking about a lot this weekend and uh
01:08:59yeah i'm very happy with it so um gotta wait and see whatever ferrari do they're in sixth position
01:09:03with uh with michael and rubens is further back so it's going to be very difficult for them whatever
01:09:07they do undoubtedly the star of the show however was jensen button's teammate takamo sato who despite
01:09:13this spin still managed to keep himself off the back of the grid i climbed over the curb maybe too much
01:09:23and then landed badly and then i got slide so that's that's called it called it too much slide and lost a
01:09:31big chunk of time over there then i knew it so that's why i really wanted to you know make it up
01:09:37perfect weather and huge crowds have so far defined the canadian grand prix and more of that is expected
01:09:42on race day the crowd's also expecting a great race michael schumacher qualifying sixth perhaps with
01:09:47a heavier fuel load maybe on a two-stop strategy with his main opposition on a three-stopper we'll see on
01:09:54sunday and you can catch all of the formula
