00:00:00Last week at Monaco, Yarno Trulli earned his first ever Formula 1 Bowl and his first ever Grand Prix victory,
00:00:12preventing Michael Schumacher from becoming the first driver ever to win the first six races to begin a season.
00:00:18One corner to go for Yarno Trulli. One corner to his first career Formula 1 victory at 119 starts.
00:00:26Trulli has done it.
00:00:28Today we return to the site of another first, the Nürburgring in Germany,
00:00:32where last year saw Kimi Raikkonen capture his first ever pole position.
00:00:37Across the line.
00:00:40Kimi Raikkonen has the first pole of his career by 3,200.
00:00:44Yeah, Norbert, you tell him, baby.
00:00:48Will today bring us another first, or will Michael Schumacher continue his charge to be the first on yet another list,
00:00:55Qualifying for round seven of the 2004 Formula 1 World Championship begins right now.
00:01:00One of the great circuit names in all of motorsports is the Nürburgring,
00:01:28site of the round seven of the Formula 1 World Championship for 2004.
00:01:33But before you can race the European Grand Prix, you must qualify.
00:01:37Hello and welcome, everyone.
00:01:39I'm Bob Varsh, along with Steve Matchett and David Hobbs.
00:01:42You just saw a car being lifted up onto the flatbed.
00:01:44And that would be David Kultar, just the beginning of our story as we get set to determine the grid for Sunday's race in single-car qualifying.
00:01:54Let's take a look at the highlights now of the earlier session, which just took place.
00:01:59It all begins, of course, with the most recent winner, and that would be Yarno Trulli,
00:02:03who has lost his voice this week and is unable to communicate with his engineers.
00:02:07But he went on track and put up a disappointing lap at 1 minute 29.
00:02:11Jensen Button in the BAR Honda, the next man out because he was the runner-up in Monaco,
00:02:16a full one second quicker than Trulli.
00:02:18And then, Ralph Schumacher took to the track, who hadn't had a great weekend so far,
00:02:23and he cranks out of time just over a tenth second quicker.
00:02:26And then, of course, his brother comes along, Michael Schumacher,
00:02:29who missed practically all of yesterday's practice with hydraulic problems
00:02:33and cranks out a staggering lap, 128-2.
00:02:37That's nearly three seconds quicker than last year's pole.
00:02:39Alonso having a go here.
00:02:41Gets a bit wide on the Coca-Cola exit there, but is about eight tenths off.
00:02:46Kimi Ryker in last year's pole sitter comes along and cranked out a pretty good lap.
00:02:51I mean, anything that McLaren do now is pretty good compared to what's been going on at the beginning part of the year.
00:02:55Then the surprise of the session.
00:02:57This is Takuma Sato, and the BAR Honda blows everybody into the weeds at 127.6.
00:03:05That's the first time we've seen all weekend in the 127 zone.
00:03:09Then another surprise.
00:03:10David Coulthard went out, posted a lap fourth quick, just one second off that astonishing circuit by Sato.
00:03:16But on the cool-down lap, DC had to abandon his failed McLaren Mercedes.
00:03:22On track at the time was Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:03:24He was brought in under a red flag, given another shot.
00:03:28But Fisichella has problems of his own.
00:03:31He had to change an engine on Friday and will lose ten spots on wherever he qualifies.
00:03:35A rare engine failure for a Ferrari-built engine.
00:03:38Here's a look at the starting order as we invert the order from the first session of single lap times.
00:03:46Now the Minardis and Jordans will be the first four cars on track, and this could be very interesting as the lap times continue to drop new lap record after new lap record being set, and once again down to tire technology.
00:04:01That 27 is just staggering.
00:04:04Last year's pole was a 31.5.
00:04:07I mean, that is a huge drop.
00:04:09But again, as you say, it's tire technology and this, you know, a tremendous war between Michelin and Bridgestone.
00:04:16So we've seen a lot more rubber being laid down as well.
00:04:19We've had no rain over the weekend, which is a usual feature here at the Nürburgring.
00:04:23So that's helped the track to rubber in, and the times are beginning to fall very well indeed.
00:04:30Well, they are.
00:04:30It just makes you wonder what somebody's going to do in this second session.
00:04:33Here in the Eiffel Mountains, the weather is always known to be changeable.
00:04:36A Formula 3000 race was once snowed out in late April here at the Nürburgring, but we have beautiful weather conditions.
00:04:43About 64 degrees, make that 65 Fahrenheit, converting from Celsius.
00:04:49Track temperature up over 100 degrees.
00:04:51Great conditions for qualifying.
00:04:54Well, we have a moment, and DC gets cranked back into the paddock.
00:04:56Let's take a look at our Porsche track map, David.
00:04:58Well, this is the new Nürburgring.
00:04:59New, that is, of course, 1984.
00:05:01Another patch on the old one.
00:05:03But you go across the start-finish line, down to Castle S there.
00:05:06Very, very tight right-hander.
00:05:07Some overtaking going to go on there through the Mercedes Arena.
00:05:10Tricky long, long, long left-hand of that.
00:05:12Then he'll exit there through Turn 4.
00:05:14Downhill steeply through 5 and 6.
00:05:16Very tricky corners, though.
00:05:17It's a bit bumpy on the exit of the forward curve.
00:05:19Down to the Dunlop.
00:05:20And you've got to get this one right, because it's a long, long curve.
00:05:23And you really want to exit this one good, because that's a steep uphill climb through
00:05:26the Audi S, Michelin curve, and the bit curve.
00:05:29Very fast corners.
00:05:30Then the hand-to-back, obviously.
00:05:31And then the NGK chicanes is another really good spot for overtaking.
00:05:35And the final corner, another long corner where you run and keep the power on, but you
00:05:39don't want to give it too much welly.
00:05:40Otherwise, you'll find yourself in the grabber.
00:05:42We've seen plenty of spins all weekend, including four this morning, one of them authored by
00:05:47Michael Schumacher himself.
00:05:49He has spun in two of the four sessions held thus far.
00:05:53Now, just when you think everything has finally settled down, here's another story making its
00:05:57way through the paddock.
00:05:57The FIA wants to change the qualifying format in Formula One yet again.
00:06:02Now, this proposed format could take effect as early as the British Grand Prix at Silverstone
00:06:06in July.
00:06:08It calls for two 20-minute sessions in which each driver will have six laps in total, basically
00:06:13two hot laps per session.
00:06:15The grid will then be formed on drivers' aggregate times from the two sessions, not one single
00:06:20lap.
00:06:20Teams will be permitted to run whatever fuel level they wish, and cars will enter Park for
00:06:24May only after qualifying has been completed, which, of course, raises the prospect of bringing
00:06:29your car into the pit lane before it needs to go to Park for May and changing fuel levels,
00:06:35tire pressures, what have you.
00:06:38Now, while our first car, Jimmy Bruni in the minority, is on track, we're going to take a
00:06:43quick break, but you will not miss a second of the action.
00:06:47Bruni, followed by his minority teammate, Jolt Baumgartner.
00:06:51Stay with us.
00:06:54Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by
00:06:59BMW.
00:07:01BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
00:07:08Welcome back to the Nurburgring.
00:07:10Norbert Haug on the right, the former journalist who now heads up Mercedes-Benz racing programs,
00:07:16huddling with his crew, and there's the reason.
00:07:18David Coulthard had a problem.
00:07:19The guy in the middle there was Whitmarsh.
00:07:20He was now the sort of managing director of McLaren.
00:07:22But just saying, there's a big gang of people standing around the McLaren garage there talking
00:07:27to Dave Redding, who's the transmission electronics expert right there.
00:07:31And I'm going to suspect it's actually hydraulic problems or transmission problems.
00:07:35I mean, that's speculation.
00:07:36If that's the case, you might see some very frantic action in the pits as they try and
00:07:40ready the spare car.
00:07:41Well, there's the guys there working on the T-car in the middle setting the ride heights.
00:07:45If they manage to get the car back and the engine's okay, you might see them desperately
00:07:48trying to take that engine out of the chassis, the race chassis, and put it into the spare
00:07:51car.
00:07:52Now, notice, race control is investigating something Jimmy Bruni did.
00:07:56Watch the lights.
00:07:57See, the lights are red as Bruni leaves the pit lane.
00:08:01Welcome to qualifying 101, Jimmy.
00:08:05Well, I'd have to say in his defense, the number one mechanic who runs the car should be watching
00:08:09the pit lights before the car is waved out into the pit lane.
00:08:12I might have known a mechanic who'd be at the foot of all of the car.
00:08:15I'm going to say, it is the mechanic's responsibility.
00:08:17This is going to be an absolute disaster for Jimmy Bruni because now he'll have to start
00:08:20dead last.
00:08:21That's right.
00:08:22As though he were going to start anywhere else.
00:08:23Oh, man.
00:08:24Oh, is that right?
00:08:25I hadn't thought of that.
00:08:25Yeah.
00:08:27Which is a bit surprising, actually, that Jimmy Bruni has been slower in the last two or
00:08:31three sessions, including Monte Carlo.
00:08:33Well, his teammate Zolt Baumgartner, who looked like Jimmy Bruni was going to be a good bit
00:08:37quicker than old Zolt, but seems to fade him somewhat.
00:08:39We tend to make fun of the Minardi team, but they have launched the careers of a number
00:08:43of terrific drivers, and we thought Bruni was one of those, but I would imagine, perhaps
00:08:49up in the press room, they're going to point out the fact that he has been hanging out with
00:08:52the young lady who was his grid girl, so to speak, in the season opener at Melbourne,
00:08:57Australia.
00:08:57He brought her with him to Monaco.
00:09:00No word as whether she is with him again this weekend, but I would imagine some pundit might
00:09:06point to that and say he's sort of taken his eye off the ball, so to speak.
00:09:09He's a bit tired, perhaps.
00:09:12But, as you say, we do tend to joke a little bit about Minardi, but all the teams, when
00:09:17they have a new driver come on board like Jimmy Bruni or Zolt Baumgartner, for that matter,
00:09:21everybody's watching him in the pits pretty much because you can soon tell who's really
00:09:25got the talent behind the wheel, even though the car obviously doesn't allow them to really
00:09:29show it, but you can still see talent.
00:09:31But being outqualified by the pretty much rubbished up and down Zolt Baumgartner, there's Paul Stoddart,
00:09:40the team owner.
00:09:42Another pained expression.
00:09:44Imagine he feels better than this guy does right now, though.
00:09:46McLaren has just arrived back with David Coulthard aboard.
00:09:51We saw him talking over his radio to the pits there for quite a long period of time while
00:09:57he was parked inside the track.
00:09:58Let's see what Zolt Baumgartner of Hungary can do.
00:10:07You see the heat haze coming off the asphalt there.
00:10:10We're running about 15 degrees more track temperature.
00:10:14It's like 104 degrees now.
00:10:15Bear in mind, yesterday it was like 89 degrees, so we're seeing a lot more temperature in the
00:10:19tarmac, which is helping these lap times fall as well, increasing the grip coefficient between
00:10:25the rubber and the tarmac.
00:10:32Now we're being told, Baumgartner, you see that the T-bar that contains the onboard camera
00:10:36atop the roll hoop is black.
00:10:39That means that is the spare car, the T-car, if you will.
00:10:43Zolt Baumgartner apparently has undergone an engine change, so he too will be relegated to
00:10:49the back.
00:10:50But in the case of Minardi, it's somewhat redundant.
00:10:52They are self-relegated on most occasions.
00:10:57Well, unfortunately, the guy who's really going to hurt with the regulations is Mark Webber,
00:11:02who did a quick time yesterday, and his quick sector was under a yellow.
00:11:08And they have given him, docked him a second.
00:11:11It's a rule I've never heard of before, but they're going to dock him a second off his time.
00:11:15Well, as he usually qualifies about the middle, he's going to be right back with these two
00:11:19guys on the back two rows.
00:11:22It's going to get a little crowded back there.
00:11:24There's going to be more people back there, not the front.
00:11:26Into the Coca-Cola curve, final corner, swinging onto the front straightaway, on the gas as
00:11:34soon as you dare.
00:11:39P-2, so he does not out-qualify his teammate.
00:11:43And that gets a wry smile from his team owner.
00:11:46Order has been restored at Minardi, but the trouble is just beginning at McLaren.
00:11:50Qualifying continues for the European Grand Prix here at the Nürburgring on a beautiful day.
00:11:58Off to the left of your screen there, you get a little glimpse of the first few yards
00:12:04of the mighty Nordschleife.
00:12:0714-mile circuit that was once the site of the German Grand Prix.
00:12:13Produced some of the most amazing races in history, many of them won by Sir Jackie Stewart.
00:12:20It was absolute magic around the Nordschleife.
00:12:22But this is the new Nürburgring.
00:12:27Pretty spectacular buildings, press rooms, etc. here.
00:12:31This is that left-right complex.
00:12:33The road's starting to go downhill here.
00:12:39Got to get a good exit there because it's a long run down to this Dunlop curve.
00:12:45Very tempted to go in there too deep.
00:12:47You really want to make sure that right from about the middle of the curve on,
00:12:50you make a real good exit to pull yourself up what is quite a steep hill here.
00:12:54It was a pretty horrible first qualifying lap for these guys.
00:12:59The CJ14 chassis has been all over the place.
00:13:02Very nervous.
00:13:03A lot of understeer on it.
00:13:04And it seems worse in qualifying than in practice.
00:13:06Which I'm kind of putting down to the amount of fuel they're putting on board to start the race.
00:13:12Remember the guys that qualify.
00:13:14Today will be the fuel that's in the car now will be the fuel they will start the race with.
00:13:19That front-end twitch there from Heidfeldt.
00:13:21The Jordan, all year we've been seeing that.
00:13:23When they brake and turn in, they have an awful job turning in.
00:13:28It just hunts around like bilio at the front-end.
00:13:32See, the kind of cure that they would like to do is to stiffen up the rear end on the car a little bit
00:13:37to try and take away that understeer on the front-end.
00:13:40But that just increases the breakaway of the back of the car.
00:13:46It loses traction that way.
00:13:48Again, it's always that magic word compromise on a car setup.
00:13:53Edmund looking on.
00:13:55Nick Heidfeldt was outdone in the first single car session by this man, Giorgio Pantano, the rookie.
00:14:02Just watch this car as it tries to maintain a straight line in the braking zone.
00:14:06Anywhere he tries to turn into it, it weaves its way through the corner like an old English threatening bit.
00:14:15See it there?
00:14:17And it all seems to come from the front.
00:14:26It's hard to keep the thing going straight down the straight.
00:14:29Right, that's what I'm saying.
00:14:30That dog won't hunt.
00:14:32Well, no, it either won't hunt or it is hunting.
00:14:34He's hunting all over the place trying to find somewhere to go.
00:14:40I was hoping we'd see that.
00:14:41Oh, exactly.
00:14:42Yeah.
00:14:42Stay on board and watch.
00:14:43Right from here is where you want to get the power on early.
00:14:45And of course, if the car won't point in, it's difficult to do it.
00:14:52Ah!
00:14:54Understeer there.
00:14:54This is the most fearsome corner, according to Ralph Schumacher.
00:15:05Pretty quick right-hander.
00:15:06Again, that's a very important corner to get right because all this next swoop through here is flat out.
00:15:10And you want to really be on it because right here, you might have a shot without breaking somebody and passing into the chicane.
00:15:17Up on the curb going in there, which is a bit dodgy.
00:15:25Coming on the curb going out is one thing, but putting your wheel up on the curb going in can be disastrous, as we saw Sarto do last week in practice at Monte Carlo.
00:15:33So, the Jordans are one and two for the moment.
00:15:40So, Pantano not managing to out-qualify.
00:15:42David Coulthard striding through the pits.
00:15:44David Coulthard will have to use the spare car to the sporting regulations.
00:15:49If a car stops out on the track during the first part in the provisional qualifying session in that first hour,
00:15:54the team are not allowed to regain that car.
00:15:57It must go to park for me and remain there.
00:15:58So, the mechanics are not able to start working on his original race car,
00:16:02so they'll have to put him into the tee car.
00:16:04This is Felipe Massa with the Sauber.
00:16:23That spare chassis at McLaren, just to give a little bit of clarification of what they're doing,
00:16:27the spare chassis is already set up for David Coulthard, which will ease them an awful lot.
00:16:31That'll save them having to change seatbelt settings and pedal settings in between the two drivers,
00:16:37so that's giving them a good heads-up on what's going on to get the car ready for the second qualifying session.
00:16:42But of course, by using a spare car, he's also using a different engine, so he's going to lose 10 spots.
00:17:00A lot of people are going to lose 10 spots.
00:17:03All right, Felipe Massa's teammate, Giancarlo Fisichella, is going to lose 10 spots because he changed his engine on Friday.
00:17:08I just don't like that at all.
00:17:10I really do not like this one-engine for Grand Prix weekend and the penalties that are imposed by the FIA for changing the engine.
00:17:15Third for Massa behind the two Jordans.
00:17:35There's a surprise.
00:17:38Well, I tell you what, that engine, the Ferrari engine, despite the little problems they've been having with it,
00:17:44it's the latest generation 2004-spec Ferrari lump, and it's not short of power.
00:17:49All season long, the Sauber's, the Ferraris, and the Honda's have been the engines to have.
00:17:54Well, that didn't help, bit of lockup down there, too fast on the entry to the Dunlop curve.
00:17:58Which is so easy, dude, because it looks so wide and open, and it's so tempting to go bollocking in there and find yourself really way too late.
00:18:07Peter Sauber gave a shrug.
00:18:11Felipe Massa has had to defend his position in this team of late.
00:18:15A bit more was expected of this young man after spending a year honing his skills testing for Ferrari.
00:18:20We'll have to see where his future lies.
00:18:24Now, the U.S. Grand Prix is right around the corner.
00:18:26To reserve your tickets, contact the Speedway Ticket Office at 1-800-822-INDY,
00:18:31or check out the website at www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com.
00:18:36And like last year, with the purchase of a race day ticket,
00:18:39you'll be given access to walk the pit lane on Thursday morning, and we will see you there.
00:18:46David Coulthard climbs in to check the fit of the spare car.
00:18:50He will be the fourth from last on track.
00:18:54In a moment, we'll be back with Christian Kleen and Mark Webber from Jaguar.
00:18:58Welcome back to final qualifying for the European Grand Prix,
00:19:15round seven of the 2004 Formula One World Championship.
00:19:17I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:19:21Ron Dennis, Martin Whitmarsh, and Norbert Hogg still going over David Coulthard's options in the McLaren garage.
00:19:28Be sure to check out Speed tonight at 7 p.m. Eastern for Speed News.
00:19:32John Roberts and myself will bring you all the latest news and highlights for the world of motorsports.
00:19:36Peter Windsor will have a report, including interviews from Germany that can be seen nowhere else but on Speed News.
00:19:41Tonight at 7 p.m. Eastern, only here on Speed.
00:19:48Breeze has come up a little bit, and the temperature as well here at the new Nürburgring.
00:19:53As young Austrian rookie Christian Kleen takes to the track in the Jaguar.
00:19:58Now, he is still at the center of a controversy, real or otherwise,
00:20:06involving the loss of a quarter-million-dollar diamond that was implanted in the nose of his Jaguar.
00:20:11They see him going off the wall after colliding with the Jaguar, nosing it in to the Lowe's hairpin.
00:20:17That quarter-million-dollar diamond was not on the nose of the car when it came back to the garage.
00:20:22A huge search was launched.
00:20:24Jaguar is offering a $65,000 automobile in exchange for the darn thing,
00:20:28and a lot of us think it's all a hoax just to help publicize the new Ocean's 12 movie,
00:20:36or perhaps Jaguar, or perhaps all of them put together.
00:20:38I don't know, you know, a new Jag road car, quarter-million-dollar diamond, what do you do?
00:20:42Yeah, really.
00:20:44They're also saying that diamond was to be auctioned off for charity,
00:20:47so they're trying to get the guilt thing going, too.
00:20:49Christian cleaned fastest in that first sector, just.
00:21:01He has a sterling reputation at this track.
00:21:04According to their PR officers, he has won races here at the new Nürburgring,
00:21:08in Formula BMW, Formula Renault, and Formula 3.
00:21:17And, of course, we must not forget that Christian clean is the youngest driver out here by quite a long way.
00:21:24He is only 21 years old, and, of course, this is only his seventh Grand Prix.
00:21:28Track temperature continues to increase.
00:21:31We've gone up another couple of degrees on track, up to 106.
00:21:34Ambient temperature is still not very warm.
00:21:36I was looking at the Sauber, and they've got very little rad ducting and rad exit on the car.
00:21:41A lot of blanking panels on there to aid the aerodynamics,
00:21:44so they're clearly not worried about underbody temperatures at all around this track.
00:21:48Flashing across the line into P1 goes Christian clean over the two Jordans,
00:21:57the two Minardies,
00:21:59and a fairly surprisingly slow lap from Felipe Massa in the Sauber.
00:22:03Well, that 31-4 will have put him on the pole for last year.
00:22:0631-5-2-3 was pole for last year,
00:22:09so you can pretty well guarantee that everybody now who goes out after Christian clean
00:22:14is going to be quicker than last year's pole.
00:22:16Some of them a lot quicker.
00:22:19I'm guessing that Sauber has a lot of fuel on board.
00:22:21Right.
00:22:22And it's great conditions.
00:22:24I mean, this track is in fine condition.
00:22:25Yeah, we should see some good times today.
00:22:29A gorgeous day up here in the Eiffel Mountains,
00:22:31right on the western edge of Germany.
00:22:34Beautiful bit of countryside.
00:22:38Here comes Mark Webber,
00:22:40who is already a second down to the field
00:22:42after that penalty yesterday for setting his fastest segment time
00:22:46in one of the sessions under a yellow flag.
00:22:50So Webber's troubles continue.
00:22:55Bright spot on the horizon for him is the rumor,
00:22:58which is gaining strength,
00:23:00that he will be a Williams driver next year.
00:23:02Also rumors that they're big sponsor, HSBC.
00:23:10Britain's biggest bank.
00:23:11In fact, one of the biggest banks in the world
00:23:13is maybe jumping ship at the end of the year as well.
00:23:17Makes you wonder how long Ford Motor Company
00:23:20will stay in this Jaguar project.
00:23:24If they lose Webber,
00:23:25it's going to be really tough.
00:23:31Webber, one of the drivers that launched his career with Minardi.
00:23:33Look at this braking area, those ripples in the road.
00:23:36It's another one of the challenges to the drivers,
00:23:38trying to get the car stocked
00:23:39while you're bouncing along the pavement.
00:23:41Look at that.
00:23:47Significantly quicker than his teammate, Christian Kling.
00:23:50Well, a week ago in Monaco is Ralph Schumacher,
00:23:52who was second fastest,
00:23:54but because he changed engines in practice on Thursday,
00:23:56he had to go back ten spots.
00:23:58Mark Webber's case,
00:23:59he may have a great lap,
00:24:01but they're going to add a second to it.
00:24:03And based on yesterday's performances in practice,
00:24:05that could cost him ten or twelve spots on the grid.
00:24:08He goes B1 with a 130.7.
00:24:12When it becomes a 131.7,
00:24:14right now he drops to third.
00:24:16We'll see how far he falls.
00:24:18We'll take a break and come back.
00:24:20Monaco winner Yarno Trulli is next.
00:24:25Back at the Nürburgring,
00:24:27the Renault crew looks on,
00:24:28the brain trust along the pit wall
00:24:30as Monaco winner Yarno Trulli
00:24:33picked up his first pole
00:24:34and first Formula One victory on the same weekend
00:24:37is now on track.
00:24:38The only problem is
00:24:39he can't tell us how thrilled he is
00:24:41because he has completely lost his voice this week.
00:24:45Yarno Trulli was slow
00:24:47in the first of these qualifying runs
00:24:49just about 45 minutes ago.
00:24:52I can only assume
00:24:53that he must have a lot of fuel on board.
00:24:56Up six tenths.
00:24:57The Renaults have not been sterling
00:24:59around the Nürburgring,
00:25:00it must be said.
00:25:01Pretty much mid-packers
00:25:02in every session thus far.
00:25:04They've been struggling.
00:25:05I think all the teams,
00:25:06but particularly Renault,
00:25:07I was talking to Alan Permain,
00:25:09Trulli's engineer,
00:25:09yesterday,
00:25:10they're struggling to get a hand
00:25:11on tyre degradation,
00:25:13that choice between the hard
00:25:14and soft compound yesterday.
00:25:16And undecided as well
00:25:17whether or not that'll translate
00:25:18into a one- or two-stop strategy.
00:25:20Of course,
00:25:21they've now had to make the decision
00:25:22on tyre compound.
00:25:25But that's what they were doing yesterday.
00:25:27Hard compound,
00:25:28soft compound,
00:25:28long runs on fuel
00:25:29and short runs on fuel
00:25:30to have a look at how the rubber was wearing.
00:25:32Oh, my goodness me,
00:25:34look at that.
00:25:35They've obviously had a bit of a change
00:25:37of strategy from the first run.
00:25:381.6 seconds.
00:25:59A great drive.
00:26:00There's Fernando Alonso looking on.
00:26:03Just a couple of tenths quicker
00:26:04than there was this morning,
00:26:05the 29.1,
00:26:06and we're looking for possible people
00:26:08in the 27s.
00:26:11Yarno Trulli is racing for his career.
00:26:13His deal with that man,
00:26:13Flavio Briatore,
00:26:15for management,
00:26:15is up this year,
00:26:16as is his deal with Renault
00:26:18for the drive.
00:26:21And Briatore told the press this week
00:26:23that winning the biggest race
00:26:24of the season in Monaco
00:26:25does not guarantee Yarno Trulli
00:26:27will have a drive with Renault next year.
00:26:29Well, of course,
00:26:30another of Flavio's men
00:26:31is Mark Webber,
00:26:33and there's talk about him
00:26:34going to Williams, obviously,
00:26:35but there's also potentially talk
00:26:36of him going to Renault.
00:26:39And the thing you don't hear much about
00:26:41is, in my opinion,
00:26:43he should be thinking about
00:26:44going to Toyota,
00:26:45because Toyota is big in Australia.
00:26:48This is Giancarlo Fisichella's car.
00:26:55He is scheduled to be
00:26:56the next man on track,
00:26:57but that car, obviously,
00:26:58is going nowhere for the moment.
00:27:00They're taking it up to Park Vermeer,
00:27:02where the Weybridge is.
00:27:03Clearly, you can see it's on a dolly
00:27:04with the tire blankets around,
00:27:06so that's how they're pushing it along.
00:27:07A little skateboard underneath
00:27:09sitting on the FIA legality blank.
00:27:13Sauber may have made the decision
00:27:14not to even qualify,
00:27:16since they know they're going to
00:27:16give up 10 positions.
00:27:18They don't want to go to Park Vermeer.
00:27:19They want to set the car up
00:27:20for the race now.
00:27:25Considering Masa's run,
00:27:27a 1.31,
00:27:28if Fisichella is anywhere
00:27:29in that neighborhood,
00:27:30he's going to be starting
00:27:31toward the back anyway.
00:27:34Green light is on.
00:27:35Cristiano De Mata
00:27:36takes to the track
00:27:37in the Toyota.
00:27:42Shorty, as he was known
00:27:43in his champ car days,
00:27:44has a lot on his mind
00:27:46this weekend.
00:27:46This is the home race
00:27:47for the Toyota team,
00:27:49about 55 miles
00:27:50from their complex
00:27:51in Cologne, Germany.
00:27:54There are a lot of rumors
00:27:54that De Mata's
00:27:55pretty much running out
00:27:57the string with Toyota.
00:27:58There's Mike Gascoigne,
00:28:00their technical director,
00:28:02who has promised
00:28:03a new car on track
00:28:05by mid-summer.
00:28:06Yep, should be ready
00:28:07for Germany,
00:28:08so we're here.
00:28:08New chassis,
00:28:10which wants to be
00:28:11much lighter.
00:28:12Gascoigne saying
00:28:12the car is just
00:28:13too heavy.
00:28:16A lot of handling
00:28:17imbalance on the car.
00:28:18They've made
00:28:18some pretty drastic
00:28:19changes to the staff
00:28:21already in the wind tunnel
00:28:22at Toyota.
00:28:24Rubens Batacalo
00:28:24getting ready.
00:28:25That's Gascoigne's
00:28:26great strength,
00:28:27his technical director,
00:28:28but he really is
00:28:28by trade in aerodynamicist.
00:28:30There's Olivier Pannis.
00:28:39Had a bit of a run-in
00:28:40yesterday.
00:28:41He was on a hot lap
00:28:42when he was blocked
00:28:43by the Minardi
00:28:46third driver,
00:28:47Vaselineers of Belgium.
00:28:48Fernando Alonso
00:28:59buckling in.
00:29:03He's getting in
00:29:04quite early.
00:29:05He's four slots away.
00:29:08Well, getting himself
00:29:09ready, getting calmed down.
00:29:10More bumps.
00:29:19Heavy braking
00:29:20for turn one.
00:29:21It's potentially
00:29:22a good overtaking spot
00:29:23that, but those bumps
00:29:24really unsettle
00:29:25these cars on braking.
00:29:26And it's, again,
00:29:27it's a very wide approach
00:29:28with a very tight apex.
00:29:30So it's awfully difficult
00:29:31to, awfully easy rather
00:29:33to really overdo it
00:29:35going in.
00:29:37And then, of course,
00:29:37here leads to all sorts
00:29:38of trouble trying to come out.
00:29:40I saw yesterday
00:29:43that Toyota are running
00:29:44the car way too soft
00:29:45around here
00:29:47and a lot of bottoming
00:29:49going on
00:29:49between the plank
00:29:51and the track.
00:29:52And as you say, David,
00:29:52coming down that
00:29:53start-finish straight,
00:29:54there's a series
00:29:54of undulations there
00:29:55and you'll see
00:29:56when the camera
00:29:56picks it up
00:29:57down that front straight
00:29:58almost a series
00:29:59of spots like
00:29:59join the dots
00:30:00along the start-finish
00:30:01straight there
00:30:02where the plank's
00:30:02bottoming out.
00:30:03Well, Toyota have
00:30:04worked well on
00:30:04the chassis setup
00:30:05and they've made it
00:30:06stiffer and lifted
00:30:07the car.
00:30:10You see it
00:30:11going over those
00:30:12undulations
00:30:12into that
00:30:13fast complex.
00:30:15Can you believe
00:30:29how close
00:30:30they get
00:30:31to a corner
00:30:31like that
00:30:31and they're still
00:30:32absolutely flat stick
00:30:34before they lift.
00:30:35I mean,
00:30:35they just
00:30:36unbelievable.
00:30:38Stopping power.
00:30:38You don't ease
00:30:41on to Formula One
00:30:42brakes.
00:30:43You jump
00:30:43on them.
00:30:44Right.
00:30:50Cristiano DeMotta
00:30:51takes his place
00:30:52for the frustrated
00:30:55Toyota team.
00:30:57A look in slow-mo.
00:31:01You can see
00:31:02the tires
00:31:03flex.
00:31:05Formula One tires
00:31:06and race tires
00:31:08generally.
00:31:09are absolutely
00:31:09phenomenal pieces
00:31:10of engineering
00:31:11and chemistry.
00:31:12We'll be back
00:31:13in a moment.
00:31:14Next up,
00:31:15Pennice.
00:31:18Speed Channel's
00:31:19coverage of the
00:31:19FIA Formula One
00:31:21World Championship
00:31:21is brought to you
00:31:22by the United States
00:31:23Grand Prix.
00:31:24The United States
00:31:25Grand Prix at
00:31:26Indianapolis has a
00:31:27new date,
00:31:28June 20, 2004.
00:31:30Tickets can be
00:31:30purchased online
00:31:31at IndianapolisMotorspeedway.com
00:31:34or by calling
00:31:35800-822-NDY.
00:31:38Welcome back.
00:31:41As qualifying continues
00:31:43here at the
00:31:43Nürburgring,
00:31:44I'm Bob Varsha
00:31:44with David Hobbs
00:31:45and Steve Matchett.
00:31:46This is Olivier Pannis
00:31:47in the Toyota.
00:31:50Off to the left,
00:31:51the Schloss Nürburgring,
00:31:52which looked just about
00:31:53like that in those
00:31:54grainy old newsreel
00:31:55shots from the 1930s
00:31:56when Grand Prix racing
00:31:59came to the Eiffel
00:31:59Mountains here in Germany.
00:32:00The old Nordschleit
00:32:03was just an absolutely
00:32:04amazing circuit,
00:32:0514.5 miles long,
00:32:07175 corners,
00:32:09and every one of them,
00:32:10when I got there
00:32:11for the first time,
00:32:12every one of those
00:32:12corners is either
00:32:13on the top of a hill,
00:32:14the bottom of a hill,
00:32:15going up a hill,
00:32:16or going down a hill.
00:32:17I mean,
00:32:17it was quite extraordinary.
00:32:18Went through the trees a lot,
00:32:20surface changed tremendously,
00:32:21always damp under the trees,
00:32:23been raining one side,
00:32:25sunning the other.
00:32:26Just a fantastic place
00:32:27to have a race,
00:32:28and luckily,
00:32:29they still do race on there.
00:32:30They have a 24-hour
00:32:31sedan car race there
00:32:32in the summer.
00:32:34And you can drive up,
00:32:35pay a few Deutschmarks
00:32:36or Euros these days,
00:32:37and drive your own car
00:32:38or motorcycle
00:32:39around the place.
00:32:40Absolutely rollicking around.
00:32:41As fast as you want to go.
00:32:42Because if you disappear,
00:32:43they don't find you for days.
00:32:44You're buried in the hedge
00:32:45there somewhere.
00:32:45A few years ago
00:32:46at this race,
00:32:47I had the pleasure
00:32:47of being driven around
00:32:49the old Nordschleife
00:32:50by former DTM champion
00:32:52Bern Schneider
00:32:53in an AMG Mercedes.
00:32:55And that was an absolutely
00:32:56religious experience
00:32:57I could tell you.
00:33:00Especially when the phone rang,
00:33:01right?
00:33:01Yeah, right.
00:33:02The phone rang in the car.
00:33:04So he starts driving
00:33:05with one hand
00:33:06at about eight tenths.
00:33:08Picks up the phone,
00:33:09speaks to it in German,
00:33:10and I don't know exactly
00:33:10what it said,
00:33:11but it sounded like,
00:33:12well, I'm a little busy
00:33:13right now.
00:33:13I'm taking a journalist
00:33:14around the Nordschleife,
00:33:15so I'll have to get back
00:33:15to you.
00:33:16Will that be all right?
00:33:17Click.
00:33:18And then both hands
00:33:19on the wheel.
00:33:21Well, that length of track
00:33:22as it was, David,
00:33:23as we see Panis cross the line
00:33:25in P2.
00:33:26Did you ever really feel
00:33:27that you knew the track,
00:33:28knew the layout?
00:33:29It's amazing how you did
00:33:30learn it.
00:33:31It was quite extraordinary
00:33:32how few laps,
00:33:34I guess you still,
00:33:36you know,
00:33:36as Bob says,
00:33:37a bit of a religious
00:33:37experience,
00:33:38you really concentrate
00:33:39like hell
00:33:39going around the Nordschleife.
00:33:41Of course,
00:33:41it changed so much
00:33:42from car to car.
00:33:44I went there,
00:33:44obviously,
00:33:45in a loads of leak,
00:33:45which is a pretty
00:33:46slow little car,
00:33:47but when I went back
00:33:48subsequently in much
00:33:49faster cars,
00:33:50all the corners
00:33:50were very different.
00:33:52Look at Marc Genet.
00:33:53There's Marc Genet
00:33:54with his hands
00:33:55in his pockets,
00:33:56test driver
00:33:56for the Williams team
00:33:57and a guy who
00:33:58probably logs
00:34:00more mileage
00:34:01than either
00:34:02of the racing drivers.
00:34:04Juan Pablo Montoya
00:34:05qualified here
00:34:06last year
00:34:07in fourth spot
00:34:08and finished second
00:34:09to his teammate
00:34:10Ralph Schumacher
00:34:11in the race.
00:34:12Not having such
00:34:13a great weekend
00:34:14so far,
00:34:15but as we saw
00:34:15from Ralph earlier on,
00:34:17things can change.
00:34:18Woo!
00:34:20That's that Mercedes
00:34:21complex.
00:34:21Long, long, long
00:34:22left-hander.
00:34:25You need very good
00:34:25mechanical grip there
00:34:26as well as some
00:34:27downforce.
00:34:29Down to sector one.
00:34:30I can't believe
00:34:30he won't be fastest.
00:34:31No!
00:34:33Boy, oh boy!
00:34:34Montoya said
00:34:35he's had terrible
00:34:35setup problems
00:34:36with this car yesterday.
00:34:38His quote was,
00:34:39I'm not on the same
00:34:40wavelength with my car.
00:34:41I thought it was
00:34:42going to be interesting.
00:34:44This is where he
00:34:45turfed old
00:34:46Michael Schumacher
00:34:47to the gravel
00:34:47last year.
00:34:48I still think
00:34:49there was no contact.
00:34:54Have a look at the wing.
00:34:55Look at the flex
00:34:56on the wing
00:34:57on the mountain pylons.
00:34:58That's been giving the
00:35:05team a lot of bother
00:35:05I think this season.
00:35:07Mm-hmm.
00:35:08And of course
00:35:08once you start getting
00:35:09that flex over the
00:35:10front wing,
00:35:11it really starts to
00:35:11screw the airflow up
00:35:12over the thing.
00:35:14And that's giving
00:35:15cause for understeer.
00:35:16And as we keep saying,
00:35:17this track really does
00:35:17induce a lot of
00:35:18understeer.
00:35:19Boy, oh boy,
00:35:22I want to hear
00:35:23behind
00:35:25Jano Chuli.
00:35:26Jano Chuli's time
00:35:28wasn't exactly
00:35:28well, Shacklin.
00:35:30Into the 29s.
00:35:32P2 by two-tenths.
00:35:34Now the crew shrugs.
00:35:39They'll be starting
00:35:39somewhere off of
00:35:41row one.
00:35:41You can be sure.
00:35:43Alonso is next.
00:35:47Welcome back
00:35:48as qualifying continues
00:35:49at the Nürburgring.
00:35:50Watching some of the
00:35:51host broadcaster replays
00:35:52of Juan Pablo Montoya's
00:35:55run to provisional
00:35:56second on the grid
00:35:57right now.
00:35:58Here comes Fernando
00:35:58Alonso of Spain
00:35:59in the Renault.
00:36:00Spain's only
00:36:04Grand Prix winner
00:36:04so far,
00:36:05Hungary last year.
00:36:07He had a pretty good
00:36:07session this morning
00:36:08coming up with a
00:36:09129.555,
00:36:11sixth quickest.
00:36:18And again,
00:36:19these guys like
00:36:19Sauber and Toyota
00:36:21not running an awful
00:36:22lot of rad exit
00:36:23duct on the car.
00:36:24Now they have got
00:36:24the louvers on those
00:36:25sharp gill louvers
00:36:26on the back of the
00:36:27bodywork behind the
00:36:28radiators,
00:36:29but they're very
00:36:29closed down.
00:36:30Which is going to be
00:36:31great news for the
00:36:32aerodynamicists.
00:36:33I'll love that.
00:36:37Bit of understeer
00:36:38going through there,
00:36:38but he got on the
00:36:39power good and early
00:36:40and was pretty
00:36:41positive about it
00:36:42as he got about
00:36:42two-thirds of the
00:36:43way around that
00:36:43corner,
00:36:44was able to just
00:36:44feed the power in
00:36:45pretty positively,
00:36:46which obviously is
00:36:47very important.
00:36:48This is quite steep
00:36:49uphill here.
00:36:49It doesn't look
00:36:49like this helicopter
00:36:50shot,
00:36:51but it is.
00:36:53And then right here
00:36:54we start going down
00:36:55again.
00:36:56And then this next
00:36:57right hand is flat
00:36:58out and starts to
00:36:59go up.
00:37:00And it's very
00:37:01important to get
00:37:02this sector fast
00:37:02because you might
00:37:03be able to do
00:37:04some overtaking
00:37:05here.
00:37:09That chicane,
00:37:10of course,
00:37:11is where he sent
00:37:12David Coulthard flying
00:37:13last year when he
00:37:14brake checked him.
00:37:15he may get to 2nd,
00:37:17but 3rd more likely.
00:37:20No,
00:37:20he got it.
00:37:21Quick through that
00:37:22Coca-Cola curve,
00:37:23but Flavio not too
00:37:24happy about it.
00:37:27So right now,
00:37:28it's an all-Renault
00:37:29front row,
00:37:30but we have a lot of
00:37:31cars still to come,
00:37:32all faster in the
00:37:34opening round of
00:37:35single-car qualifying.
00:37:36look at that right
00:37:39front come right off
00:37:40the ground in that
00:37:41corner.
00:37:42It drops away very
00:37:43sharp.
00:37:44It's a very steep,
00:37:45a very tight apex,
00:37:46and the road drops
00:37:47big time.
00:37:48And they all hang
00:37:49that right front wheel
00:37:50up in the air.
00:37:51Rubens Barrichello
00:37:52take it to the track.
00:37:53Now,
00:37:53all Rubens,
00:37:54boy,
00:37:54oh boy,
00:37:54I was looking at
00:37:55his face sitting in
00:37:56the cockpit just a
00:37:57few moments ago.
00:37:57This is a guy who's
00:37:58got some serious
00:37:59pressure because he's
00:38:01driving what is
00:38:02ostensibly the
00:38:04quickest car out
00:38:05there,
00:38:05and he's lying
00:38:07second in the
00:38:07championship,
00:38:08but a long way
00:38:09behind his team
00:38:10leader,
00:38:10and people are
00:38:12starting to talk
00:38:12about favoritism
00:38:13and other sorts of
00:38:14conspiracy theories
00:38:16going on,
00:38:16but Rubens does
00:38:18have a lot of
00:38:18pressure.
00:38:21The entire Ferrari
00:38:22team this
00:38:23weekend is mourning
00:38:24the loss of Fiat
00:38:25chairman Umberto
00:38:26Agnelli,
00:38:27who died this
00:38:28week of cancer
00:38:29at age 68,
00:38:32having succeeded
00:38:34his older brother
00:38:34Gianni Agnelli
00:38:36as Fiat chairman
00:38:37when Gianni died
00:38:37in January of
00:38:38last year.
00:38:40But both Rubens
00:38:41Barrichello and
00:38:42Michael Schumacher
00:38:43are close to
00:38:44the late Umberto
00:38:45Agnelli's son,
00:38:46Andrea,
00:38:47so things are a
00:38:48little quiet around
00:38:49the Ferrari garage
00:38:50this weekend.
00:38:52And Barrichello
00:38:52basically this weekend
00:38:54has been quicker
00:38:54than either
00:38:55Renault's,
00:38:57but at the
00:38:58moment he ain't.
00:39:00Well,
00:39:01I'm wondering
00:39:01about fuel
00:39:02strategy,
00:39:03David,
00:39:03how much
00:39:04these guys
00:39:04are putting in.
00:39:05Now, we know
00:39:05that Ferrari
00:39:06are capable
00:39:07of running
00:39:07two stops
00:39:08and three
00:39:08stop strategies
00:39:09with bad drivers.
00:39:10Barrichello
00:39:11running a two
00:39:11stop strategy
00:39:12a couple of
00:39:13races ago,
00:39:14and Michael
00:39:15being on the
00:39:16three stopper,
00:39:16and of course
00:39:17on two stop,
00:39:17you carry more
00:39:18fuel.
00:39:19Right.
00:39:20P3.
00:39:21So if he is
00:39:22heavy on fuel,
00:39:22that's a good
00:39:23performance.
00:39:23Yeah,
00:39:24absolutely.
00:39:25This is that
00:39:26great chess game.
00:39:26Ross Braun,
00:39:27the technical
00:39:28director of
00:39:28Ferrari,
00:39:29was saying
00:39:29yesterday in a
00:39:30press conference
00:39:30he would love
00:39:31to give out,
00:39:32if he could get
00:39:32all the teams
00:39:33to agree,
00:39:34to give out
00:39:35those fuel
00:39:36figures to us
00:39:37guys in the
00:39:37media and the
00:39:38journalists so
00:39:38that we could
00:39:38tell you exactly
00:39:39how much fuel
00:39:40we've all got
00:39:41on board.
00:39:41Because,
00:39:42well,
00:39:42you know what
00:39:42it's like
00:39:43during the race,
00:39:43we're all
00:39:43trying to second
00:39:44guess what
00:39:44everybody else is
00:39:45doing.
00:39:45Sometimes we're
00:39:46getting it right,
00:39:47sometimes we're
00:39:47getting it wrong,
00:39:47but to have
00:39:48those figures
00:39:49from the teams
00:39:50would make it
00:39:50a wonderful
00:39:50spectacle.
00:39:51There's Pierre
00:39:52Depasquier who
00:39:53heads up
00:39:53Michelin's
00:39:54tire program
00:39:54talking with
00:39:55David Coulthard.
00:39:56You saw
00:39:56Michael Schumacher
00:39:57watching the
00:39:58timing monitor
00:39:58to see how
00:39:59that strategy
00:40:00worked out
00:40:00for Rubens
00:40:01and he beat
00:40:02Juan Pablo
00:40:02Montoya for
00:40:03third by
00:40:04one one
00:40:04thousandth of
00:40:05a second.
00:40:08This is
00:40:08Kimi Raikkonen
00:40:09who is very,
00:40:10very quick,
00:40:11no matter how
00:40:12the car is,
00:40:13around the
00:40:14Nürburgring.
00:40:14Pole last
00:40:16year and
00:40:16absolutely had
00:40:18the race
00:40:18locked up,
00:40:19disappearing
00:40:20to the distance.
00:40:21So we had
00:40:21a cloud of
00:40:22smoke like
00:40:22that,
00:40:23only it was
00:40:23engine smoke.
00:40:26The fin
00:40:27is trying
00:40:28hard here.
00:40:32Well,
00:40:33that is
00:40:33certainly
00:40:33good enough
00:40:34for that
00:40:34first sector
00:40:35to be good
00:40:35enough
00:40:35for a
00:40:35second spot.
00:40:38It's the
00:40:39second fastest
00:40:40first split
00:40:41we've seen,
00:40:41but he did
00:40:42go off that
00:40:42little bit,
00:40:43raising that
00:40:43dust.
00:40:44We'll see
00:40:44how much
00:40:45it costs
00:40:45him.
00:40:46This car
00:40:47should work
00:40:48well on
00:40:48aerodynamics,
00:40:49Bob.
00:40:49I mean,
00:40:50unlike at
00:40:50Monaco where
00:40:51the car just
00:40:52wasn't riding
00:40:53the curbs
00:40:53well at all,
00:40:54that's not
00:40:54so much
00:40:55of an issue
00:40:55here.
00:40:56And Adrian
00:40:57Newey,
00:40:57of course,
00:40:57one of the
00:40:57sports great,
00:40:58great aerodynamicists.
00:41:00I mean,
00:41:01the car's got
00:41:01great lines
00:41:02on it.
00:41:02I think
00:41:08that's what
00:41:09the engineers
00:41:09said to
00:41:10one another
00:41:10in the wind
00:41:11tunnel last
00:41:11fall.
00:41:12This car
00:41:12should work
00:41:13very well.
00:41:14Yeah,
00:41:14well,
00:41:15yeah,
00:41:15we all know
00:41:16what happened.
00:41:18This may be
00:41:19a disappointment
00:41:19for Raikkonen.
00:41:24P2,
00:41:25great third
00:41:26sector.
00:41:27He was
00:41:27looking at
00:41:28fifth on the
00:41:28cume through
00:41:29the two
00:41:29first segments.
00:41:30Ron Dennis
00:41:31smiling.
00:41:32Let's have a
00:41:32replay of that.
00:41:35Wow.
00:41:35I told you
00:41:36he was good
00:41:37around here.
00:41:38That is a
00:41:39great drive
00:41:40by Kimi
00:41:41Raikkonen
00:41:42to P2
00:41:43for the
00:41:44moment.
00:41:46Darno
00:41:47truly remains
00:41:48the provisional
00:41:48pole sitter.
00:41:50We'll take a
00:41:51quick break
00:41:51and return
00:41:52in a moment.
00:41:52Jensen
00:41:53Button,
00:41:53who was
00:41:54fastest this
00:41:54morning,
00:41:55will be out
00:41:56next.
00:41:59Welcome back
00:42:09to the
00:42:10Nürburgring
00:42:10qualifying for
00:42:11the European
00:42:11Formula One
00:42:12Grand Prix.
00:42:13This is
00:42:13Jensen
00:42:14Button
00:42:14in the
00:42:16BAR Honda.
00:42:17Join us
00:42:18tomorrow morning
00:42:18for live
00:42:19coverage of
00:42:20the Grand
00:42:20Prix beginning
00:42:20at 7.30 a.m.
00:42:22Eastern with
00:42:22the Acura
00:42:22Pre-Race Show
00:42:23featuring Peter
00:42:24Windsor.
00:42:25This week,
00:42:25Peter will give
00:42:26us a recap
00:42:26of the Monaco
00:42:27Grand Prix
00:42:27and all the
00:42:28bizarre events.
00:42:29We'll hear
00:42:29from all
00:42:29the drivers
00:42:30involved in
00:42:30that.
00:42:31Again,
00:42:31that's tomorrow
00:42:32morning at
00:42:327.30 a.m.
00:42:33Eastern,
00:42:33live,
00:42:34only here on
00:42:34Speed.
00:42:35However,
00:42:36the event is
00:42:37subject to
00:42:37Blackjack.
00:42:40Jensen
00:42:40Button on the
00:42:41front row in
00:42:42Monte Carlo
00:42:42last week
00:42:43and finished
00:42:44second.
00:42:46In fact,
00:42:46I think
00:42:46Jensen
00:42:47Button has
00:42:48finished every
00:42:49race this
00:42:49year.
00:42:51In the
00:42:52points.
00:42:52Right.
00:42:53only seven
00:42:55points behind
00:42:56Reuben
00:42:57Barracalla for
00:42:57second in the
00:42:58world championship
00:42:58at the moment.
00:42:59That's what the
00:43:00teams will tell
00:43:01you.
00:43:01It's important
00:43:01to be reliable
00:43:02first and then
00:43:04work on winning.
00:43:06Yeah,
00:43:06absolutely.
00:43:07But it was a
00:43:08surprise there.
00:43:08He's slower than
00:43:09Jano True in that
00:43:10first sector.
00:43:10the next man on
00:43:14track was
00:43:15scheduled to be
00:43:15David Coulthard,
00:43:16but as you saw
00:43:17before the break,
00:43:18he is standing
00:43:18around the
00:43:19McLaren garage,
00:43:20obviously not
00:43:20going out.
00:43:22So he, too,
00:43:23will start toward
00:43:24the back.
00:43:26I would imagine
00:43:27the organizers are
00:43:28flipping through the
00:43:28rule book to decide
00:43:29who's going to
00:43:30start where on
00:43:30those last three
00:43:31rows.
00:43:371,600s off
00:43:39through the
00:43:39second intermediate.
00:43:41See if he can
00:43:42come up with a
00:43:43Raikkonen-like
00:43:43third one.
00:43:47Nice shot of the
00:43:48wheel there,
00:43:48having some
00:43:49steering input.
00:43:57Two, three,
00:43:581,100s.
00:43:59David Richards,
00:44:00the team manager,
00:44:02not happy with
00:44:03that.
00:44:04He splits
00:44:05Raikkonen and
00:44:06Alonso.
00:44:10Ah, there it is.
00:44:14That'll do it.
00:44:14That's where he
00:44:16lost, uh,
00:44:17that's why that
00:44:18first sector
00:44:19wasn't quicker.
00:44:21There goes David
00:44:22Coulthard's car
00:44:23following
00:44:24Giancarlo Fisichella's
00:44:26toward Barclamain.
00:44:28If you're just
00:44:28joining us,
00:44:29David Coulthard
00:44:30in the first round
00:44:32of single car,
00:44:33put up a great lap
00:44:34and then did this.
00:44:35Stopped on course
00:44:36in a smoky heap
00:44:37and climbed out.
00:44:41So that was the
00:44:42end for that
00:44:42machine.
00:44:44They went back,
00:44:44went to work
00:44:45feverishly on the
00:44:46T-car,
00:44:47but now have
00:44:48apparently decided
00:44:49not to take that
00:44:50car out.
00:44:52They'll simply
00:44:53take their time
00:44:53to prepare it
00:44:54before sending it
00:44:55off to park for May
00:44:56and they will
00:44:57choose whether to
00:44:58start on the grid
00:44:59or in the pit lane
00:45:00tomorrow.
00:45:06So three drivers
00:45:08remain.
00:45:09Ralph Schumacher,
00:45:10Mike Schumacher
00:45:11of course,
00:45:12the local favorites
00:45:13and the astonishing
00:45:15leader of the
00:45:16first session,
00:45:17Takuma Sato.
00:45:18Stay with us.
00:45:26The first of the
00:45:27last three drivers,
00:45:29the fastest
00:45:29from the first round
00:45:30of single car
00:45:31is now on track.
00:45:32Michael Schumacher
00:45:33studies the insides
00:45:35of his eyelids
00:45:36following the
00:45:37Hobbs tradition
00:45:38of preparation
00:45:39for an intense
00:45:40physical and
00:45:41mental effort.
00:45:43This is Ralph
00:45:44Schumacher.
00:45:46I want to see
00:45:47the performance
00:45:48of this car,
00:45:48Bob,
00:45:48because there was
00:45:49a lot of concern
00:45:50in the gyros
00:45:50just before
00:45:51Ralph Schumacher
00:45:52rolled this FW26
00:45:53out into the pit lane.
00:45:54A lot of mechanics
00:45:54study in the back
00:45:55of the car
00:45:56whether or not
00:45:57they consider
00:45:58there might be
00:45:58some sort of problem,
00:45:59but of course
00:45:59they want to get
00:46:00the car,
00:46:00have to get
00:46:01the car out
00:46:01to qualify,
00:46:02so let's see
00:46:02whether or not
00:46:03it holds together.
00:46:06Mario Tyson,
00:46:07we just saw his face
00:46:08there,
00:46:08looking on very
00:46:09enigmatically.
00:46:10Down at that
00:46:11turn one,
00:46:11no lockup,
00:46:12nice and clean
00:46:13through there.
00:46:14This is where
00:46:15Jensen got it
00:46:16just slightly wrong,
00:46:17went a bit wide.
00:46:17Everybody was
00:46:18doing that on Friday.
00:46:20They all go very
00:46:21wide there.
00:46:21He had to lift
00:46:22right there.
00:46:27Check the first
00:46:28split.
00:46:28It's going to be
00:46:29close.
00:46:31Two tenths.
00:46:36I mentioned
00:46:37during the show
00:46:38covering practice
00:46:39yesterday that
00:46:40the little village
00:46:42near Kirpeth
00:46:43in Germany,
00:46:44not far from
00:46:45this racetrack
00:46:45where Michael
00:46:46and Ralph Schumacher
00:46:47grew up and cut
00:46:48their racing teeth
00:46:48in go-karts
00:46:50on a track
00:46:50owned by their
00:46:51family.
00:46:53That town
00:46:54is slated
00:46:55to be bulldozed
00:46:56to make way
00:46:57for a big
00:46:57open pit coal mine,
00:46:59which I'm sure
00:46:59is the subject
00:47:00of some
00:47:01interest to
00:47:03Michael and Ralph
00:47:03considering they
00:47:04buried their
00:47:05mother Elizabeth
00:47:05there last year
00:47:06after she died
00:47:07on the San Marino
00:47:08Grand Prix weekend.
00:47:12Well,
00:47:13Schumacher
00:47:14ain't going to
00:47:14make the front row.
00:47:17Qualified third
00:47:18here last year
00:47:19and of course
00:47:20went on to win
00:47:20the race.
00:47:22Leading a
00:47:22Williams 1-2
00:47:23but right now
00:47:24he's looking at
00:47:25row four.
00:47:31Seven.
00:47:32Inside row four
00:47:33three tenths
00:47:34off Yarno
00:47:35Trulli's time.
00:47:37Yeah.
00:47:39Smooth.
00:47:40There's Mario
00:47:40Tyson not looking
00:47:41very happy.
00:47:43There is Takuma
00:47:44Sato who posted
00:47:45a lap at
00:47:451-27
00:47:46in the opening
00:47:48round of
00:47:48single car.
00:47:49I wonder how much
00:47:50fuel these guys
00:47:50have got on him
00:47:51and his teammate
00:47:52Montoya whether or
00:47:53not these guys are
00:47:53running heavy fuel
00:47:54as well.
00:47:56Again, fuel is an
00:47:57issue here.
00:47:58They seem very
00:47:59split between what
00:48:00to do, two or
00:48:01three stops.
00:48:02Pretty much
00:48:02throughout the season
00:48:03so far it's been
00:48:04three stops and a
00:48:05very early short
00:48:06stop in that
00:48:06three-stop strategy.
00:48:07Here the engineers
00:48:08are just not sure
00:48:09what to do.
00:48:10Here comes
00:48:12Michael in the
00:48:13Ferrari.
00:48:15The string of
00:48:16five straight
00:48:17victories to
00:48:18open the season
00:48:19broken last
00:48:20Sunday in
00:48:20Monaco.
00:48:22That bizarre
00:48:22crash in the
00:48:23tunnel with
00:48:24Juan Pablo
00:48:25Montoya.
00:48:26Well, Michael
00:48:26said he was
00:48:26warming his
00:48:27brakes for a
00:48:28restart in a
00:48:29bizarre piece of
00:48:30strategy during
00:48:31which he did
00:48:32not pit under
00:48:33the yellow flag
00:48:34while the two
00:48:36cars that
00:48:36eventually finished
00:48:371-2 in the
00:48:37race, Yarno
00:48:38Trulli and
00:48:38Jenson Button
00:48:39did.
00:48:39Michael Schumacher
00:48:40ahead at the
00:48:41first intermediate.
00:48:43This is the
00:48:44important corner
00:48:45right there.
00:48:46Got to get the
00:48:47power on up
00:48:47this hill.
00:48:49And Michael,
00:48:50the Ferrari,
00:48:51the Bridgestones
00:48:52all seem to be
00:48:53very good on
00:48:53these fast
00:48:54sweepers.
00:48:55Yeah.
00:48:56This is a new
00:48:56chassis for
00:48:57Michael Schumacher
00:48:57too.
00:48:58They changed the
00:48:59chassis after
00:48:59that slight
00:49:00shunt in the
00:49:00tunnel at
00:49:01Monaco.
00:49:02Ferrari
00:49:02said he just
00:49:03nipped one of
00:49:03the suspension
00:49:04mountings enough
00:49:05to give them
00:49:05concern.
00:49:07Five tenths
00:49:07ahead.
00:49:08See the
00:49:15chicane.
00:49:17This Ferrari
00:49:18looks so good
00:49:19over curbs and
00:49:20bumps.
00:49:22About four or
00:49:23five years ago
00:49:24it looked terrible
00:49:24over the bunk
00:49:25but it looks
00:49:25great now
00:49:26coming up to
00:49:27the line.
00:49:31Listen to that
00:49:32crowd.
00:49:33Luca Badua,
00:49:34their test
00:49:34drivers standing
00:49:35there watching
00:49:36the monitors,
00:49:36the air
00:49:37horns,
00:49:37the fireworks,
00:49:39the flags.
00:49:42But these guys
00:49:43are to come
00:49:43with the
00:49:44kumasato.
00:49:45Yes,
00:49:45Mario looking
00:49:46on there.
00:49:48So,
00:49:48look at Michael
00:49:52down in the
00:49:53Dunlop curve
00:49:54I believe.
00:49:54This is where
00:49:55he spun off
00:49:56last year
00:49:56in the
00:49:56contretemps
00:49:57with Juan Pablo
00:49:58Montoya
00:49:58and there
00:49:59are his
00:50:00legions.
00:50:05That's fun
00:50:05to watch.
00:50:06Now,
00:50:06this could be
00:50:07interesting.
00:50:08Takuma
00:50:08Sato
00:50:08blew everyone
00:50:10in the weeds
00:50:11in the
00:50:11BAR Honda
00:50:12in the opening
00:50:13lap of
00:50:13single car.
00:50:14Let's see
00:50:14what he
00:50:14can do
00:50:15here.
00:50:15I would
00:50:16love this
00:50:16guy on
00:50:17this team
00:50:17to take
00:50:17pole position.
00:50:22And what
00:50:22a thing
00:50:23it would
00:50:23be in
00:50:24his native
00:50:24Japan.
00:50:25Oh,
00:50:25my goodness
00:50:26mate.
00:50:27A Japanese
00:50:28driver with
00:50:28a Honda
00:50:29engine on
00:50:30pole.
00:50:30Well,
00:50:30he's looking
00:50:31pretty strong
00:50:31so far.
00:50:33Nope.
00:50:34Nope.
00:50:341400s off
00:50:36at the
00:50:36first intermediate.
00:50:39Once again,
00:50:40we don't know
00:50:41what they've
00:50:41done with
00:50:41fuel.
00:50:42Right.
00:50:42Right now,
00:50:44he is second
00:50:44so he's
00:50:45in the
00:50:45ballpark.
00:50:46And I
00:50:46tell you,
00:50:47this Honda
00:50:47engine has
00:50:48been the
00:50:49engine to
00:50:49have.
00:50:50That or
00:50:50the Ferrari
00:50:50lump in
00:50:51the back
00:50:51of your
00:50:51chassis
00:50:52is what
00:50:52you're
00:50:52after.
00:50:55Because
00:50:55Honda
00:50:55having a
00:50:56lot of
00:50:56input now
00:50:57into the
00:50:57car itself,
00:50:58into the
00:50:58team,
00:50:59the
00:50:59gearbox,
00:51:00the
00:51:00aerodynamics.
00:51:08They don't
00:51:08just want
00:51:09to be an
00:51:09engine
00:51:09supplier and
00:51:10I think
00:51:10that's
00:51:10the tack
00:51:11BMW
00:51:12going to
00:51:12take.
00:51:13That's a
00:51:13little bit
00:51:13too slow
00:51:14there.
00:51:15Oh,
00:51:15and he's
00:51:16catching
00:51:16Michael.
00:51:18He looks
00:51:18pretty solid
00:51:19for second
00:51:20place right
00:51:21now,
00:51:21but I
00:51:21don't know
00:51:22if he'll
00:51:22be able
00:51:23to get
00:51:23to
00:51:23Schumacher.
00:51:24We'll hear
00:51:25about it
00:51:25from
00:51:25pit lane
00:51:26as he
00:51:26pulls
00:51:26in.
00:51:29Come on,
00:51:30son.
00:51:33No!
00:51:34Well,
00:51:35that's not
00:51:35bad.
00:51:36That's a
00:51:36great
00:51:37performance.
00:51:37John
00:51:39taught
00:51:39the
00:51:39Ferrari
00:51:40team
00:51:40managers
00:51:40wearing
00:51:41that
00:51:41scarf
00:51:41all
00:51:42weekend.
00:51:43Maybe
00:51:43a
00:51:44touch
00:51:45of
00:51:45something.
00:51:45Just
00:51:46last week
00:51:46he had
00:51:46that
00:51:47unbelievable
00:51:47start
00:51:48at
00:51:48Monaco.
00:51:48If
00:51:48he
00:51:49makes
00:51:49another
00:51:49of
00:51:49those
00:51:49here,
00:51:50he
00:51:50could
00:51:50launch
00:51:50himself
00:51:51in
00:51:51front
00:51:51of
00:51:51Michael
00:51:52Schumacher.
00:51:53Well,
00:51:54order
00:51:54has been
00:51:55restored
00:51:55as far
00:51:56as these
00:51:56folks are
00:51:57concerned.
00:51:58He
00:51:58picks up
00:51:58his
00:51:5860th
00:51:59pole
00:51:59position
00:52:00today,
00:52:00Michael
00:52:00Schumacher.
00:52:01So,
00:52:02another
00:52:02five
00:52:03to
00:52:03equal
00:52:04center.
00:52:04Dave
00:52:07Richards
00:52:07must
00:52:08be
00:52:08pretty
00:52:08pleased
00:52:08with
00:52:09that
00:52:09when
00:52:09you
00:52:09consider
00:52:09the
00:52:09performance
00:52:10of
00:52:10beer
00:52:10over
00:52:11the
00:52:11last
00:52:11two
00:52:11or
00:52:11three
00:52:12years.
00:52:12This
00:52:12season
00:52:13has
00:52:13seen
00:52:13a
00:52:13dramatic
00:52:14change
00:52:14in
00:52:14their
00:52:15fortunes.
00:52:15So,
00:52:17it's
00:52:17a
00:52:17German,
00:52:18a
00:52:18Japanese,
00:52:19an
00:52:19Italian,
00:52:21a
00:52:21Finn,
00:52:22and a
00:52:22Brit,
00:52:23followed
00:52:23by a
00:52:23Spaniard
00:52:24and a
00:52:24Brazilian.
00:52:26Wouldn't
00:52:26it be
00:52:27great
00:52:27to have
00:52:28an
00:52:28American?
00:52:30We'll
00:52:30take a
00:52:31break
00:52:31and be
00:52:31back.
00:52:32Qualifying
00:52:32is now
00:52:33complete

00:57:31Monaco
00:57:31we all

00:57:40are
00:57:40doing
00:57:40fantastic
00:57:41job
00:57:41Unfortunately
00:57:42Monaco
00:57:43I had
00:57:44to
00:57:44stop
00:57:44quite
00:57:44early
00:57:45on
00:57:45the
00:57:45race
00:57:45I
00:57:46couldn't
00:57:47really
00:57:47enjoy
00:57:47the
00:57:48race
00:57:48with
00:57:49big
00:57:50competitors
00:57:50but
00:57:51today
00:57:51I
00:57:52think
00:57:52we
00:57:53achieved
00:57:53what
00:57:53we
00:57:54wanted
00:57:54and
00:57:55tomorrow
00:57:55we'll
00:57:56be
00:57:56really
00:57:57looking
00:57:58forward
00:57:58to

00:57:59side
00:57:59by
00:57:59side
00:58:00with
00:58:00really
00:58:01good
00:58:01competitor
00:58:02Well
00:58:02congratulations
00:58:03Yano
00:58:04I guess
00:58:05one of the
00:58:05downsides
00:58:06to winning
00:58:06Monaco
00:58:06is all that
00:58:07speech making
00:58:07and talking
00:58:08to journalists
00:58:08afterwards
00:58:09you've lost
00:58:09your voice
00:58:10and of course
00:58:11you had that
00:58:12pre-qualifying
00:58:12having to go up
00:58:13first but a great
00:58:14recovery lap
00:58:14in qualifying
00:58:15Thank you
00:58:16I mean it's so
00:58:17difficult for me
00:58:18today to express
00:58:19my happiness
00:58:20because I've
00:58:20lost my voice
00:58:21I just
00:58:22just would like to
00:58:23say that
00:58:24I couldn't believe
00:58:25that I'm
00:58:26third
00:58:26and especially
00:58:27I want to
00:58:29thank all
00:58:29my mechanics
00:58:30because they've
00:58:32done a great job
00:58:33this morning
00:58:33I had a problem
00:58:34and they made
00:58:35the car
00:58:37okay for the
00:58:38qualifying
00:58:38so I'm so happy
00:58:39thank you
00:58:41Michael
00:58:42you've been in
00:58:42racing a long
00:58:43time but
00:58:43talk a little
00:58:44bit still about
00:58:45the thrill of
00:58:45racing in front
00:58:46of your home
00:58:46crowd here at
00:58:47the Nürburgring
00:58:47It's always
00:58:49something special
00:58:49you never get
00:58:50used to that
00:58:51because it's
00:58:52this extra
00:58:52motivation
00:58:54you get out
00:58:54from all the
00:58:55enthusiasm
00:58:56you see out
00:58:57on the
00:58:58grandstands
00:58:58so it's
00:59:00a race I really
00:59:01look forward to
00:59:02a little bit
00:59:03especially for
00:59:04what happened
00:59:04in Monaco
00:59:05to come back
00:59:06and hopefully
00:59:08if we can do
00:59:08win the race
00:59:09here
00:59:09thank you very
00:59:11much now if we
00:59:12could have some
00:59:12words from you
00:59:13in your own
00:59:13language starting
00:59:13with Michael
00:59:14well that was
00:59:15interesting and
00:59:16I must say
00:59:17Jarno Trulli is
00:59:17a great guy
00:59:18a terrific racing
00:59:19driver but he
00:59:20is getting some
00:59:21really bad
00:59:21fashion advice
00:59:22he's got to
00:59:23quit talking to
00:59:24David Beckham
00:59:25we'll be back
00:59:26in a moment
00:59:27welcome back
00:59:34qualifying is
00:59:35complete
00:59:35Michael
00:59:36Schumacher
00:59:36has his
00:59:3760th career
00:59:38pole bringing
00:59:38him within
00:59:39five of the
00:59:40late Ayrton
00:59:40Senna's
00:59:41Formula One
00:59:41record
00:59:41let's watch
00:59:42the lap
00:59:43that did
00:59:43it for him
00:59:44and as we
00:59:46always say
00:59:47this chassis
00:59:48David just
00:59:49looks so
00:59:50smooth
00:59:50everything about
00:59:51it looks
00:59:52great
00:59:52going into
00:59:54that turn
00:59:54one there
00:59:54lifted the
00:59:55wheel least
00:59:55of anybody
00:59:56perhaps
00:59:56all the way
00:59:57through that
00:59:58long Mercedes
00:59:59complex
00:59:59car looking
01:00:00really rock
01:00:01solid
01:00:01comes out
01:00:02of this
01:00:02right-hander
01:00:03and launches
01:00:04himself down
01:00:04to that
01:00:04first time
01:00:05sector
01:00:05and obviously
01:00:08picks up a
01:00:08couple of
01:00:09tenths
01:00:09and look at
01:00:10the way it
01:00:10goes through
01:00:10this complex
01:00:11it changes
01:00:12directions so
01:00:13well that
01:00:13Ferrari
01:00:14and then when
01:00:14it does
01:00:14exit the
01:00:15corner
01:00:16goes up
01:00:16on the
01:00:16curb
01:00:17you know
01:00:17whether you're
01:00:18an in-car shot
01:00:18or outside
01:00:19the thing
01:00:20looks just
01:00:20beautiful
01:00:21rides the
01:00:22curbs
01:00:22rides the
01:00:23bumps
01:00:23really really
01:00:24well
01:00:24they've
01:00:24improved
01:00:25the car
01:00:25enormously
01:00:26over the
01:00:26last couple
01:00:26of years
01:00:27and makes
01:00:27a great exit
01:00:28out of that
01:00:28Dunlop
01:00:29curve
01:00:29all the way
01:00:29up this
01:00:30hill
01:00:30to that
01:00:30first
01:00:31very fast
01:00:32left-hander
01:00:32all the
01:00:33Bridgestone
01:00:34runners seem
01:00:34to be running
01:00:35a little bit
01:00:35more negative
01:00:36camber
01:00:36there's the
01:00:37shot I'm
01:00:37after right
01:00:37there you
01:00:38see the
01:00:38top of the
01:00:38wheels
01:00:39leaning in
01:00:39relative to
01:00:40the outside
01:00:40to the bottom
01:00:41edge
01:00:41they haven't
01:00:42been running
01:00:43that much
01:00:43negative
01:00:43camber all
01:00:44season but
01:00:45it's certainly
01:00:46helping the
01:00:46car around here
01:00:47helping all the
01:00:48Bridgestone
01:00:48runners but
01:00:48certainly
01:00:49Ferrari
01:00:49maximising
01:00:51best use
01:00:51out of those
01:00:52tyres
01:00:52and then
01:00:52breaking over
01:00:53those bumps
01:00:54into the
01:00:54chicane where
01:00:54we've seen a
01:00:55lot of cars
01:00:55undulating badly
01:00:56I'd like to
01:00:57see that car
01:00:57the super
01:00:58slow-mo's
01:00:59it went over
01:00:59the curb
01:01:00there at
01:01:00the chicane
01:01:01and then of
01:01:01course
01:01:02manages this
01:01:03last corner
01:01:03the Coca-Cola
01:01:04corner is
01:01:04180 degrees
01:01:05and really
01:01:06sort of
01:01:06opens up
01:01:07rarely touching
01:01:09that white line
01:01:10at the track
01:01:10side
01:01:11Michael Schumacher
01:01:12reasserts his
01:01:13authority
01:01:13in Formula One
01:01:15qualifying
01:01:15and there's
01:01:16one of his
01:01:16big fans
01:01:17no doubt she
01:01:18is going to be
01:01:19leaving the
01:01:19Nurburgring happy
01:01:20we'll be back
01:01:21in just a
01:01:22moment

01:01:28is complete
