00:00About 20 miles southwest of the island kingdom, capital of Manama, Bahrain, is the town of
00:13Sakhir, with the mosque, of course, the centerpiece of this predominantly Muslim country, the
00:19first country in the Middle East to host a round of the Formula One World Championship
00:23in the 50-plus years of the series.
00:26Hello, everyone. I'm Bob Barsha. Welcome to formal Friday practice for the Formula One Grand
00:33Prix of Bahrain. David Hobbs and Steve Matchett alongside, as always, the cars rolling out
00:38for the second of two Friday practices. There's Rubens Batekello. He and teammate Michael Schumacher
00:43dominated the first practice. Gentlemen, let's take a look at the highlights of Friday's first
00:49session. The track, built at a cost of some $150 million U.S., features this nine-story tower,
01:00the top floor of which is reserved for the pleasure of His Majesty, the King of Bahrain.
01:05All the cars went on track for a formation lap, and when they got down to business, the honor
01:09of first spin on the new circuit went to the Williams BMW of Ralph Schumacher. Meanwhile,
01:16the honor of the fastest lap in the session went to his brother Michael in the Ferrari,
01:19whose very first time out on the track. He was nearly a second and a half quicker than
01:23anybody else. Maintained that throughout the session.
01:26Cristiano De Mata in the Toyota, trying to come to grips, as it were, with the new track.
01:31He spun and not to be outdone. His teammate, the senior driver in the series now, Olivier Penis,
01:36also did a roundabout. Jordan's third driver, trying to come to grips in the car, and Steve
01:43Maché says he's an absolute pig. Hmm, Steve, my telephone's ringing already, doubt that a lot
01:48would disagree. At the end of the session, Rubens Barichello trying to get back at his
01:52teammate Michael Schumacher, but he was held up briefly by Ralph, and he let Michael's little
01:58brother know, what's the matter for you? Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barichello, and BAR Honda
02:06test driver Anthony Davidson of Great Britain, the fastest cars in the session. Juan Pablo Montoya
02:13and Jenson Button doing good work. Ricardo Zonta set the first official timed lap. The Toyota
02:18tester went on to do the most laps of the session, 21 in all. The fastest car in a straight line
02:23was Davidson in the BAR Honda, topping 201 miles per hour. Both Renaults not doing perhaps
02:31as well as they thought, and the Jags, too, a little bit off the pace. You see Bjorn
02:37Vertheim, their third driver, five seconds slower than Michael Schumacher, over five seconds slower.
02:42Pretty dusty old track, as you can see the dust being blown up everywhere off the wheels as
02:48they come down the main straight. The vortex behind the car absolutely filled with the brown dust,
02:53obviously the sand being sucked up, and a very clag building track. This will be as the weekend
02:59goes on, as the sand and the rubber all get rolled up into some pretty unpleasant offline clag.
03:09The teams have all been very worried about the amount of sand, as you rightly say, David.
03:14I was talking to Ferrari's technical director, Ross Braun, about an hour or so ago.
03:20It is saying that Ferrari have developed some new heavy-grade air filters for the opening sessions
03:26only of this Grand Prix weekend for fear of the detrimental damage to the engine, bearing in mind
03:34that it would be one engine for Grand Prix weekend. They have got other air filters in line as well,
03:39and should the dust start to clear away, they will change air filters. Of course, they've also had to put additional air filters
03:45on things like the alternator cooling ducts and whatever to try and keep that sand from destroying the internals of the engine.
03:53Big concern, and they were saying, really, what we're worried about really as far as dust is not so much the dust on the track now,
04:00that will clear away as the session progresses. It's when the cars start to slide wide into the runoff areas and pull that huge
04:06billowing cloud of dust as we were watching the first practice session. Really, it's quite terrible, the dust on the track.
04:12The old one-engine rule is really going to be put to the test this weekend because people did a lot of practice this morning,
04:17which they tried normally not to do at all in that very first session, because obviously today was to have to get data and learn the track.
04:23And they all rushed out for this session, too, which again is unusual. So they're going to put more miles than usual on the engine,
04:30plus, of course, they've all got that problem to sand.
04:33They're going to follow Ralph Schumacher. The blowing sand has been a problem, and officials have taken steps.
04:40They have actually sprayed an adhesive product, or glue, if you will, along the dunes, along the boundaries of the track.
04:48They say that's really all we can do.
04:53They say that's really all we can do.
05:09An awful lot of flat-out running around the $150 million Bahrain International Circuit, making its debut on the world stage this weekend.
05:20We'll be right back to practice.
05:21Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship
05:26is brought to you by the all-new BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle.
05:31BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
05:38There's Kimi Raikkonen pulling off track
05:41as we welcome you back to the second practice session
05:43on the Friday of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
05:46Raikkonen stopped on track before the end of the morning session.
05:50Fernando Alonso and the Renault did the same,
05:52but this is obviously a serious mechanical problem for the Fenn
05:56who has yet to finish a race in 2004.
06:00Boy, Kimi Raikkonen, I mean, everybody through the winter testing
06:03and especially early on when this car first came out,
06:06one of the first cars out,
06:08everybody looking at Kimi is a really definite hope for the World Championship
06:12and his hopes for that are just absolutely tanking
06:16every time he gets on the track.
06:18Tanking, indeed, you just saw a sheet of flame
06:20come out of the exhaust outlets on the back of the MP419
06:23as Raikkonen switched it off.
06:25So my guess is that further lump woes continue
06:28for the McLaren-Mercedes team.
06:31There's a flamelight coming out of the right-hand bank.
06:34Well, now we're about to find out
06:36how well the Bahraini emergency crews go to work.
06:38Many of them were trained at the Australian Grand Prix,
06:41and there they are.
06:45That's nicely contained.
06:46Yeah, so Mercedes-Benz and McLaren
06:49continue to have a pretty dismal 2004 season.
06:53We're looking at it.
06:53That looks unusually black smoke for an engine block.
07:01That's the body work on fire.
07:02I was just wondering that.
07:03Well, be it.
07:04Remember that McLaren have been working
07:06on this very tight engine and transmission installation
07:09and with the hydraulic hard lines as well
07:11has been giving them a lot of problems.
07:12Hard lines as opposed to the flexible air-equipped hoses.
07:16And to try and get the very tight body line they want
07:19or Adrian Newey wants for the aerodynamics
07:21has been causing them problems.
07:23Incredibly difficult to extract the heat
07:25from underneath the body.
07:28And that means an awful lot of valuable practice time
07:32will be lost to the McLaren team
07:33and especially Kimi Raikkonen.
07:35There's Ron Dennis, the team managing director,
07:37a man under some pressure at this point.
07:40Let's take a look at the previous problem
07:42suffered by Kimi Raikkonen.
07:43In the season opener in Australia
07:46a very short distance into the race
07:49when the engine seized up at the rear
07:51a sheared water pump was fingered
07:53as the culprit.
07:58So that meant his Australian Grand Prix.
08:00Then two weeks ago at the Malaysian Grand Prix
08:03another heavy mechanical failure.
08:06This one well into the race
08:07while Raikkonen was running in a podium position
08:09as I recall.
08:10and shows his frustration there.
08:15Not very gentlemanly.
08:16Not very gentlemanly.
08:17But on the other hand
08:18I can kind of understand
08:19where he's coming from that.
08:20Well, that problem of course
08:22on Raikkonen's car
08:23will cost him 10 spots on the grid
08:25because he'll have to change engine.
08:28At least we're assuming.
08:29I should say we're assuming
08:31it's an engine failure.
08:31We don't know that
08:32but it certainly looks like it.
08:33If they do have to change engine now
08:34of course with a one engine
08:35for Grand Prix rule
08:37that will require 10 spots back
08:39on the grid for Kimi Raikkonen
08:40and come qualifying.
08:41Oh, big problems.
08:43And there you get an idea
08:43of the dust.
08:44And he's only just offline.
08:46I mean he's on the actually
08:47really on the curb
08:48on the checkered curb
08:49to the edge of the track
08:50and you see the dust coming up there.
08:52Just what Ross Braun
08:53was explaining to us earlier on
08:54that that's going to be the problem
08:55with that dust blowing
08:56across the track.
08:57Right now Michael Schumacher
08:59has set fast time
09:00at 1 minute 33.337.
09:04That would only have been good
09:05for 5th place
09:08in the morning practice.
09:09Now we have a Jordan off.
09:12Somebody else's day
09:13is brought to a premature close.
09:16David Coulthard
09:17and the other McLaren
09:18is actually humming along
09:19pretty good.
09:19He's only a tenth of a second
09:21off Michael Schumacher's time.
09:24German Nick Heidfeld
09:25climbs out.
09:32There's the peace sign
09:33on the engine cover.
09:35The latest in a series
09:36of international messages
09:39of peace
09:40that the Jordan team
09:42is displaying on their cars
09:43in conjunction with a program
09:45sponsored by the organizers
09:46of this race.
09:47They'll have a different message
09:48of peace on the car
09:50at each round of the championship.
09:52On board with Rubens Baracchello.
09:54A little bit of a lockup there
09:55as you enter that right-hander.
09:58Just at fast time.
10:08Cruise mode now.
10:09It's going to set a huge idea
10:10of what the track looks like
10:11from the driver's point of view.
10:13Very, very flat.
10:14Not many distinguishing marks
10:16off the track either.
10:19Into the pit lane.
10:20No.
10:24Speaking of the track,
10:25let's have a look at the track, Mac.
10:26Fifteen turns,
10:27as you saw from Rubens' car,
10:28very little elevation change.
10:30Very hard on brakes here.
10:31Down to turn one,
10:32four,
10:33and fifteen especially.
10:35The track moves around
10:36a lot between
10:37four and eleven.
10:39It's a bit of a straight down
10:39from ten to eleven
10:40where there should be
10:41an overtaking opportunity.
10:42But other than that,
10:43the track on the move
10:44all the time,
10:45which means, of course,
10:45difficult to overtake.
10:46But it is over 54 feet wide
10:48all the way around.
10:49It's very flat
10:50and obviously one hopes
10:51it'll be very smooth
10:52this time.
10:53But a little bit,
10:54but so flat,
10:55the fact that
10:56distinguishing marks
10:57for the drivers
10:58I think are going to be
10:58a little bit difficult.
11:00Run-up areas are great.
11:01Obviously no gravel cut here.
11:03Thanks to Porsche
11:04for bringing you
11:05the track map.
11:06On board again
11:06with Barkello.
11:08Let's hope we do a lap.
11:11As we've heard,
11:12over 200 miles an hour
11:13down the straight.
11:16Very tough break for one.
11:21Ooh, just that tough.
11:22Lighting up
11:23the left front Bridgestone.
11:26No apparent improvement
11:27for Barkello
11:28on that last lap,
11:29but he remains
11:30the fast man in the practice
11:31over his Ferrari teammate
11:32Michael Schumacher.
11:34Take a break
11:35and return
11:35for more practice
11:36from Bahrain.
11:38Stay with us.
11:38Welcome back
11:53to the Bahrain
11:54International Circuit
11:55in the town of Sakhir,
11:56about 20 miles southwest
11:57of the capital city
11:58of Manama
11:59in the island kingdom
12:01of Bahrain.
12:02The main island,
12:04barely 10 miles by 30,
12:06the population
12:06of just under
12:07700,000 people.
12:10Petroleum, of course,
12:11is the main national product.
12:15There's an awful lot
12:16at stake
12:17for this tiny
12:19but very wealthy country
12:20welcoming the Formula One
12:22World Championship,
12:23the first Middle Eastern
12:24country to do so.
12:26Rubens Barkello
12:27has improved
12:27the practice-leading time
12:29to 1 minute 32.4 seconds.
12:31Michael Schumacher
12:32who is now on track
12:33remains second
12:34at 1.333.
12:36David Coulthard
12:371.334
12:38and Anthony Davidson,
12:39the BAR Honda tester,
12:411.337.
12:43Test drivers again
12:44putting up a good show.
12:45Davidson is fourth.
12:47Ricardo Zantos
12:47fifth
12:48in the Toyota.
12:50Significantly quicker
12:51than either
12:51of his teammates.
12:52Olivier Pannis
12:55is down in 13th
12:56and Cristiano D'Amato
12:57is 15th
12:58at the moment.
12:58Of course,
12:58obviously,
12:59those guys
13:00will be testing
13:00more of a race setup
13:01than will Zonta.
13:03In addition
13:04to the blowing sand,
13:05one of the big concerns
13:06of this weekend
13:07was ambient temperature.
13:09Right now,
13:10it's fairly pleasant,
13:11about 88 degrees.
13:12You see the track temperature
13:13about 126.
13:15Very low humidity,
13:16of course.
13:18Forecast
13:18is for
13:19sunny skies.
13:20The question is,
13:21how hot will it get?
13:24Well,
13:24apparently,
13:24the wind's going to come
13:25out of the north,
13:26which everybody's
13:27very happy with
13:27because apparently,
13:28the south wind
13:29is what drags
13:29the sand and dust
13:30onto the track.
13:31So,
13:31the north wind
13:32and I imagine
13:32at this time of the year,
13:33the north wind also
13:34would be slightly cooler
13:36than the southerly wind.
13:37Now,
13:38this is something else,
13:39another storyline
13:39we have to keep in mind
13:41that there are a lot
13:42of heavy braking zones
13:44around this Bahrain track.
13:46You just saw the front
13:47disc light up on the BAR
13:48and a lot of black dust
13:50coming out of the cars
13:51already.
13:53We watch
13:53Ross Braun
13:55and Jean-Todd
13:56on the right
13:56looking
13:56at their telemetry screens
13:59but they will be
14:00keeping a careful watch.
14:01They're wanting to put
14:02a lot of fuel
14:02into these cars
14:03and force the brakes
14:05to work hard
14:05so they can have
14:06an idea of brake wear.
14:08What would be great
14:09concern to them
14:09is how much brake cooling
14:11they're going to have
14:12to put on the cars.
14:13The aerodynamicists
14:14do not want to put
14:15brakes on the car
14:16because it wrecks
14:17their airflow.
14:17The mechanical engineers
14:19of course
14:19do want to operate
14:20that's on their car
14:21because it gets them
14:22to the end of the race.
14:23Everything is a compromise.
14:29That shot gives you
14:30an idea of the scope
14:31of this racetrack.
14:32Built to seat
14:33just 65,000.
14:36Although they anticipate
14:37more than that
14:38showing up
14:38for this inaugural
14:39running of the Grand Prix
14:40but the country
14:41only has a few
14:42thousand hotel rooms
14:43so people will be
14:44coming in from
14:45everywhere this weekend.
14:48On board with
14:49Bjorn Hertheim.
14:50See he runs wide there.
14:51Look at the dust
14:52that kicks up
14:52and he's only like
14:53a foot off line
14:54or a foot off the track
14:55so it's going to be dusty
14:58pretty much all the weekend.
15:00Oh wow, look at that.
15:00Oh!
15:02Of course those hot tires
15:03pick up all that dust
15:04sticks to the tires
15:05so for the next few corners
15:07the car's pretty much rooted.
15:09Michelin's on the Jaguar
15:10Bridgestone's on the
15:12session leading
15:13Ferraris of course.
15:16Pierre Dupasquier
15:16head of Michelin
15:18come out with some
15:18quite acidic comments
15:20after the last race
15:21talking about the comparison
15:23between his tires
15:24Michelin and the Bridgestone
15:25saying
15:26there is no way
15:27that Bridgestone
15:28are producing better tires
15:29than ours.
15:29It's not possible.
15:30The problem lies
15:31within the teams themselves.
15:33They have to produce
15:34the better car.
15:34Our tires are not at fault.
15:36That's a marketing
15:37masterstroke.
15:39Juan Pablo Montoya
15:41on Michelin
15:41has now jumped
15:42into second spot
15:43with a 32.9
15:44a significant improvement
15:45for him over this morning.
15:47He and his teammate
15:48Ralph Schumacher
15:49both spinning now
15:50this morning.
15:55As an interesting
15:56thing going on
15:57there's been speculation
15:58that the track surface
16:00may favor
16:01the Bridgestone runners
16:03and specifically
16:04Ferrari.
16:06apparently
16:06that the asphalt
16:07mixture
16:08is a product
16:09made by the
16:10Shell Oil Company.
16:11Shell of course
16:12is the fuel
16:13and lubricant
16:13sponsor
16:14for the Ferrari team.
16:17And we understand
16:18that there was
16:18a section
16:19of this surface
16:20laid at the
16:21Ferrari testing track
16:22in Fiorano, Italy
16:23recently.
16:25So
16:26conspiracy theorists
16:27have at it.
16:28Yeah, I was going to say
16:30that is really
16:32clutching at straws
16:33because I guess
16:35if anybody has a
16:36anybody's got a lead
16:37here it is the fact
16:38that the Mark Genet
16:40the Williams test
16:41driver did like
16:4119 or 20 laps here
16:43just a couple of
16:44three weeks ago
16:44so they do have data
16:46so they do have data.
16:46That's Michael Schumacher
16:48going around.
16:50Wow!
16:51Got in him
16:52and what have I done?
16:53When was the last
16:53time you saw that?
16:55But in typical
16:56Schumacher fashion
16:57he makes a very
16:58clean 360 of it.
17:02Takuma Sato
17:02has gone P2
17:03a 1.32.8
17:04still 4 tenths
17:05off Barrichello's time.
17:07On board with Michael.
17:09Whoa!
17:10Oh boy!
17:11I think it just
17:12got into that dust.
17:13Yeah.
17:13Stepped out
17:13on the right rear.
17:14Yeah.
17:16And Michael is
17:18let's have another
17:19look at it.
17:20Among all of his skills
17:21his ability to handle
17:22a loose race car
17:23is peerless.
17:27Well these practice
17:28sessions
17:28and I'm sure
17:28that was just
17:29as you say
17:30just a matter
17:30of getting onto
17:31the dust
17:31but these practice
17:32sessions are typically
17:33where you will see
17:33the drivers pushing
17:34harder than normal
17:35finding the absolute
17:36envelope of that
17:37braking zone.
17:39Once they find that
17:39then they'll back
17:40off a little bit.
17:42Good look at the
17:42elaborate barge boards
17:44in white on the
17:45front of the Ferrari
17:45in the left front
17:46corner that is.
17:48Barrichello
17:48remains supreme
17:49at the moment.
17:56Welcome back
17:57to the Bahrain
17:57International Circuit
17:58and we have
17:5936 minutes remaining
18:01in the second
18:02of two Friday
18:02practice sessions
18:03for the Grand Prix
18:05of Bahrain.
18:06There's Michael
18:06Schumacher
18:07back in the Ferrari
18:07garages
18:08after a quick spin
18:09while we were away.
18:11Fernando Alonso
18:12in the Renault
18:13set quick time
18:14at 1 minute
18:1432.2 seconds
18:16two tenths
18:17under Rubens
18:17Barrichello's performance.
18:19Of course
18:20Speed Channel
18:20is your home
18:21for Formula 1
18:21all weekend long.
18:23Join us tomorrow
18:23for coverage
18:24of qualifying
18:25for the Grand Prix
18:25of Bahrain.
18:27Coverage begins
18:27at 7 a.m. Eastern
18:28with highlights
18:29of pre-qualifying
18:30and we'll bring you
18:31all the way
18:31to the interview room
18:32where our own
18:32Peter Windsor
18:33will be asking
18:34the questions.
18:34Again, that's tomorrow
18:35at 7 a.m. Eastern
18:36only here on Speed
18:38and the event
18:38is subject to blackout.
18:41This is Mark Webber
18:42in the Jaguar.
18:43Again, a lot of dust
18:44went out of
18:45Webber's front
18:46rims
18:47of the breaking.
18:48He's currently 11th.
18:52Ralph Schumacher
18:53just went fastest
18:54in the session
18:551.32.
18:58Come on,
18:59Mr. Timing.
19:06The track
19:07obviously is
19:08getting a little grip.
19:13That was nice
19:14there, wasn't it?
19:161.32.
19:171.06
19:19for Ralph.
19:30Notice the steering wheel
19:31and I'll be quiet.
19:39Turn 11.
19:44long, fast curves
19:48and a fairly hard
19:49break into this turn
19:51and a long
19:51straight out.
19:54That was pretty good.
19:55Nicely cool.
19:55Yeah, I've already
19:56heard that pretty flexing.
19:58That is a really
19:58tough corner.
20:00It's important
20:01because this long
20:02straight, I thought.
20:02This is another
20:03tough one.
20:06Bob, I don't want
20:07to put my voice
20:09over the top
20:09of the track
20:10too much
20:10but look at the
20:11angle of the
20:12steering wheel.
20:12They have not
20:13got the tracking
20:13of the steering wheel
20:14to the parallel
20:15run of the tire.
20:17Oh yeah.
20:17To the right-hand side.
20:18He's not squaring up
20:19on the straightaways.
20:20No, absolutely.
20:20He won't be pleased
20:20with that at all.
20:21It's Mario Thiessen
20:22who runs the BMW
20:23engine program.
20:25Now, I mentioned
20:26the steering wheel
20:26because last week
20:28when IRL IndyCar
20:29champion Scott Dixon
20:30went testing
20:30with Williams
20:31he said the steering
20:33wheel was
20:33absolutely overwhelmed
20:35him.
20:35He said there must
20:35be 40 buttons
20:36on the thing.
20:37I didn't know
20:37what to do.
20:39Well, he did well.
20:40I think he said
20:40what a mess, didn't he?
20:42The thing was too
20:43well, it was impressive
20:44but Paul Rickard
20:45first time he'd ever
20:46been there
20:46he was only
20:47four tenths of a
20:47second slower
20:48than Ralph Schumacher.
20:49Really impressive.
20:51Very impressive.
20:52Talking to one
20:52of the Williams
20:53Aero guys
20:54in between
20:56the two races
20:57and they're saying
20:57they've clawed
20:58about 2% more
20:59downforce
21:00out of the car
21:00in the wind tunnel
21:01in testing
21:02since the last race
21:03to this.
21:03Well, 2% doesn't
21:05sound much.
21:05Typically, you might
21:06be able to pull
21:07about 10% more
21:08downforce
21:08but nevertheless
21:09on 2,000 kilos
21:112% is a very
21:12useful thing
21:12to have on the car.
21:13It's certainly
21:13not a retrograde step
21:14and they're happy
21:15with it.
21:15What the Aero guys
21:16are saying is
21:17we think
21:17the Williams
21:19mechanical engineers
21:20are wanting to run
21:20the car too soft.
21:21It's moving around
21:22too much at the back
21:23and that's affecting
21:25the aerodynamics
21:25over the car.
21:27This is
21:27Minardi driver
21:28Gian Maria
21:30or Jimmy Bruni.
21:32Right now,
21:32it's Ralph Schumacher
21:33over Jenson Button.
21:36VAR going very well.
21:38Three in the top six.
21:52Welcome back.
21:54Second Friday practice
21:55for the Grand Prix
21:56of Bahrain.
21:56I'm Bob Varsha
21:57with Steve Matchett
21:58and David Hobbs.
21:59Glad to have you with us
22:00early, early
22:02on a Friday morning
22:03here on Speed Channel
22:04for covers of the
22:05Formula One World Championship.
22:06About 30 minutes
22:07to go in the session.
22:09The ride with
22:09Rubens Botticello.
22:10Ooh, a little bit
22:11of a lock up there.
22:12This is hard to tell
22:13whether it's early or late
22:14depending if you're
22:15on the West Coast.
22:15It could be just
22:16a good late night.
22:16a late Thursday night.
22:25Now that's a good solid
22:26break into that corner.
22:27That's one of the B.A.R.s.
22:36Jenson Button cranked out
22:39a pretty good time
22:39at 1.32-2
22:41as opposed to
22:42Ralf Schumacher's
22:431.32-1
22:44so pretty close there
22:46and Buttons
22:47winter testing time
22:49certainly
22:50looking pretty good now.
22:52He qualified fourth
22:53in Australia
22:54finished on the podium
22:55in Malaysia
22:55having qualified sixth
22:56and running stronger today
22:58so they keep this up
22:59for the rest of the season.
23:01Looks like B.A.R. Honda
23:02are going to have
23:02a much, much better season
23:04than they've been
23:05having in the past.
23:06Well, they think
23:06they've found
23:07about one and a half seconds
23:09by changing tyres
23:11to Michelin.
23:12I think they've found
23:14about half a second
23:15in the chassis.
23:16I was talking to Gary Savage
23:17the transmissions engineer
23:19at B.A.R.
23:20because they
23:21like McLaren
23:22have also got
23:23a carbon fibre
23:24composite gearbox
23:26on the back of their car.
23:27Gary Savage saying
23:28well, I'm like McLaren
23:29you know, bear in mind
23:30that our composite gearbox
23:32is working very well
23:33thank you.
23:33He's done over 22,000 clicks
23:35in testing.
23:37One of the Renaults
23:38running very wide
23:39on the last corner
23:40but they're somewhere
23:41having no problem
23:42with it at all
23:43and it's about
23:4323% lighter
23:45oh, look at the dust
23:47there
23:47for a moment there
23:48I thought it was
23:49exhaust smoke
23:52coming out of it
23:52Michael's having
23:55problems as well
23:56that was Joel Baumgartner
23:57in the other car
23:58the Minardi
23:58they're all beginning
24:00to suffer
24:01with that dust
24:01burn across the track
24:02it's kind of
24:03a catch-22 situation
24:04it self-generates
24:05the problem
24:06someone goes off
24:07the dust goes on the track
24:08somebody else goes off
24:09as a result of that
24:09more dust on the track
24:11to finish that thought
24:15on BAR's gearbox
24:16just 23% lighter
24:18than last year's
24:19transmission
24:19and already
24:20they think
24:20they can save
24:21another 20%
24:22in wait
24:23for the gearbox
24:24they're designing
24:24for 2005
24:26let's look at what
24:28happened to Michael
24:29and miss the apex
24:31got wide
24:32that's interesting
24:33at least you don't have to worry about grass
24:37and stuff
24:37blocking up the vents
24:38here do you
24:39just a bit of dust
24:39and look at it
24:40there's the Renault
24:44Alonso going
24:45ooh
24:45again just
24:47carrying too much speed
24:50into that
24:50and his car didn't turn
24:51well that last corner
24:53is one of those
24:54nasty little deceivers
24:55it's a very hard break
24:57and then the right hand flick
24:58and then
24:59it does another little
25:01right hand flick
25:02onto the straight
25:03so it's not exactly
25:04a straight forward corner
25:06people may be
25:07gearing up to try
25:08a little qualifying trim
25:09we're on
25:10although there is a lot of time
25:12to go in the session
25:13and the times have not
25:14come down significantly
25:15from the morning
25:16this morning
25:16Michael Schumacher led
25:17at 132.158
25:19right now Ralph Schumacher
25:21is the fast man
25:22at 132.106
25:24and Jensen Button
25:26in second
25:27has not eclipsed
25:28Michael's time
25:28from the morning
25:29about how quick
25:32these cars are going
25:33B.A.R.
25:34saying that they've made
25:35about a second and a half
25:36I shouldn't say B.A.R.
25:38if B.A.R.
25:39has said that
25:39I'm feeling in the pit lane
25:41that B.A.R.
25:41have made about a second and a half
25:42improvement with tyres
25:43general consensus
25:44about two seconds
25:46a lap
25:47the cars have improved
25:48from last year to this year
25:49by just redesigning
25:51the cars
25:51two seconds
25:52just one redesign
25:54Michael Schumacher
25:55ahead of his brother's pace
25:56through the first intermediate
25:57well when he went off
25:58on that previous lap
25:59he actually went off
26:00on turn two
26:01and I think he went off
26:02as a result of the dust
26:03that you just said
26:04right as we were watching
26:06Michael
26:06he said oh
26:07one of the Renaults
26:07has gone off
26:08and I think that's what
26:09put Schumacher off
26:10he got the dust
26:11of the Renault
26:11and
26:12that could happen a lot
26:14this weekend
26:14Michael currently ninth
26:16in the session
26:17but he has the quick
26:18first intermediate time
26:19now
26:19substantially
26:20the only man
26:23under 30 seconds flat
26:25these sessions on Friday
26:28and this is what
26:30Ferrari's view
26:30the session is worth
26:32to them
26:32that it's really a matter
26:34of just getting the tyre choice
26:35remember that the tyre
26:36suppliers are allowed
26:37to produce two different
26:38compounds
26:39for argument's sake
26:40for one to be better term
26:41hard and soft
26:42though it's
26:43kind of irrelevant
26:43from circuit to circuit
26:44what that means
26:45but they need to choose
26:47that tyre compound today
26:48because it needs
26:49the decision to the FIA
26:50of what compound
26:51they're using
26:51needs to be set by
26:52tomorrow morning
26:53before the qualifying
26:53sessions begin
26:54by three tenths
26:56Michael Schumacher
26:57sets fast time
26:58in the session
26:59how important
27:00is that tyre selection
27:01two weeks ago
27:02in Malaysia
27:02Rubens Barakello
27:03said that was
27:04the only difference
27:05between his pace
27:06and Michael's
27:07race winner
27:08welcome back
27:12to practice
27:12at Bahrain
27:13this is Fernando Alonso
27:14the brilliant young Spaniard
27:16in the Renault
27:17he has lost
27:18the right rear tyre
27:19carcass completely
27:20and he deposits
27:23some debris
27:23on the track
27:24which we saw
27:24one of the other cars
27:27run over
27:27boy that tyre
27:28has really come apart
27:30yeah that's been a
27:32that's been a feature
27:33of these
27:34tyres
27:34very hard
27:36stiff sidewalls
27:37on the car
27:37is that the special feature
27:38there's the Renault
27:39bodywork
27:40Sato running over
27:42at the B.A.R.
27:42that wouldn't have done
27:43the other side
27:45of his car
27:46you notice he came in
27:48just as soon as Alonso
27:49made his garage
27:50yeah the tyre's
27:51already gone at that
27:52stage
27:53it is kind of a
27:53it's something that we
27:55started to see
27:56last year
27:56there goes
27:57there it is
27:58just
27:58delamination
27:59exactly the same thing
28:00as that in Canada
28:01last year
28:03when the tyre
28:03just delaminated
28:04like that
28:05but what Mission
28:06are trying to do
28:07is control
28:07the sidewall movement
28:09remember they've got
28:09so little suspension
28:10movements on the cars
28:11and they're trying
28:13to control that
28:13by putting these
28:14very hard
28:15sidewalls
28:16onto the car
28:17and as soon as
28:17you get a puncture
28:18it's not necessarily
28:19that the tyre
28:20is just delaminated
28:21but once you get
28:22a puncture
28:22the thing then
28:23just rips itself
28:24off
28:24another look
28:26at Sato
28:27and he's jammed
28:28under the body
28:29Sato actually
28:30I surely could have
28:31made a bit of
28:31a better job
28:32of avoiding that
28:32that's what I thought
28:33I mean he just
28:33drove right over
28:34it
28:34well I wonder
28:35if it was just
28:35over the brow
28:36there's a bit
28:37of elevation change
28:37perhaps we're going
28:40to see the tyre
28:40come apart now
28:41there's Yarno
28:42truly
28:42the other Renault
28:44driver
28:44and he's got
28:45problems
28:45well it's just
28:46a downshift
28:47there I guess
28:47no I don't think so
28:49I don't know
28:50he's going
28:50probably switched
28:51the lump off
28:52when the telemetry
28:53readings started
28:54to go out of whack
28:54there but
28:55you do get a bit
28:56of a flame out
28:57on downshifts
28:57but it shouldn't
28:58normal that
28:59amount of flame
29:00so I think
29:01probably switch it
29:02off and hopefully
29:03hopefully they'll
29:04be able to save
29:04the engine
29:04because what they
29:05don't want to do
29:05of course
29:06as we keep saying
29:07this year
29:07they do not
29:08want to change
29:09lump because
29:09that'll cost them
29:1010 spots on the
29:11grid before
29:11qualifying
29:12if they change
29:13the engine
29:13after qualifying
29:14they will go
29:1620 spots back
29:17that's Flavio
29:18Briatore
29:18and of course
29:19Kimi Räikkönen
29:20looks like his
29:23engine went
29:23in the McLaren
29:24so he will go
29:2410 spots back
29:25wherever he
29:26qualifies tomorrow
29:27assuming
29:29as you said
29:30it's the engine
29:30local yellow
29:34yellows out for
29:35well
29:36truly
29:37there are certain
29:38things on the
29:39engine that the
29:39FIA will allow
29:40them to change
29:41the ancillaries
29:42such as the
29:43alternator
29:44the water pump
29:44the radiators
29:45the wiring looms
29:46control boxes
29:47but there are lead
29:48seals on such as
29:49the heads
29:50so they can't be
29:51removed
29:51the cylinder block
29:52is sealed
29:53and the crankcase
29:54itself is sealed
29:54to the sump
29:55underneath
29:55so the major
29:56mechanical components
29:57cannot be
29:58rebuilt overnight
30:00but the ancillaries
30:02can be changed
30:03of course we don't
30:04know what that is
30:05it's unlike to be
30:05an ancillary
30:06there's a group
30:09looking forward
30:10to a lot of work
30:11in the coming hours
30:12so truly goes
30:24behind the wall
30:25and of course
30:27it's a brand new
30:27track like this
30:28all these drivers
30:30kind of want as
30:30much track time
30:31as they can get
30:32and the teams
30:32the teams need
30:34the data
30:34absolutely
30:35Fernando Alonso
30:39was fourth
30:40before his tire
30:41problem
30:42Jarno truly
30:43twelfth
30:43the other Renault
30:45will be back
30:46to Bahrain
30:46in a moment
30:47welcome back
30:53Ralph Schumacher
30:53sits in the
30:54BMW Williams garage
30:56waiting his next
30:57turn on track
30:58with a little
30:59under 17 minutes
31:01and 30 seconds
31:01to go
31:02in this second
31:02and final Friday
31:03practice in preparation
31:04for the first ever
31:06Formula 1 Grand Prix
31:07in the Middle East
31:07so join us
31:08Sunday morning
31:09at 7 a.m.
31:10Eastern
31:10for live coverage
31:11of the inaugural
31:11Grand Prix of Bahrain
31:13as always
31:13we'll start things off
31:14with the Acura
31:15Pre-Race Show
31:16in which Peter Windsor
31:17will give us a good
31:18close look
31:19at this amazing
31:20new circuit
31:20then at 7.30 a.m.
31:22Eastern
31:22the cars
31:23will be rolling off
31:24for the first ever
31:24Grand Prix of Bahrain
31:26and like David Hobbs
31:27on a Saturday night
31:28the event
31:29is subject
31:29to blackout
31:30very good Bob
31:33this is one
31:36Pablo Montoya
31:37at this point
31:39languishes in
31:418th spot
31:42on the timesheets
31:43nearly 3 tenths
31:46slower
31:46on that first
31:4730 second segment
31:48it's a very tight
31:51turn 4
31:52his father Pablo
32:00is watching
32:00from the garage area
32:02so this ongoing debate
32:05between mechanical
32:06set up
32:06and aerodynamic
32:07set up
32:08what the aerodynamicists
32:08are so concerned about
32:09is they want the car
32:11to be kept
32:11as stiff as possible
32:12because they want
32:13the attitude of the car
32:14to remain neutral
32:15they don't want the
32:16chassis to roll
32:17from left to right
32:18because that
32:18screws up the airflow
32:20across
32:20and more importantly
32:22underneath the car
32:23there you
32:25and this is what
32:26this car was talking
32:26about
32:27he says
32:27you know
32:27you watch the back
32:28of the FW26
32:29on cornering
32:30and when he goes
32:31under heavy load
32:32on these corners
32:33you see the back end
32:34squat down and roll
32:35so that's great
32:36for mechanical grip
32:37but we hate it
32:38it's not what we want
32:40at all
32:40checking the time
32:44on
32:44boy
32:44he picked up a lot
32:46of time in that
32:47last sector
32:48didn't he
32:48oh yeah
32:49he was about
32:506 tenths off
32:51entering the final
32:52segment
32:52came up just
32:541 thousandth
32:57of a second
32:57so Rubens
32:58Barrichello
32:59has reasserted

33:06Kini Raikkonen's
33:07troubles continue
33:08with McLaren
33:08Mercedes
33:09he got in a
33:10total of
33:11one lap
33:12before the car
33:13failed him
33:14Nick Heidfeld
33:14in the Jordan

41:15oh
41:17of course
41:18they
41:18could
41:18be
41:18trying
41:18a
41:19compound
41:19that's
41:20a little
41:20bit
41:20soft
41:20and
41:20subject
41:21to
41:21being
41:22cut
41:22easier
41:23I don't
41:23know
41:23they'll be
41:23wanting to
41:24use a
41:24soft compound
41:25you're absolutely
41:25right in that
41:26David because of the dust
41:27on the track
41:28you want to use a
41:28soft compound
41:29and maybe it's
41:31getting to the stage
41:31in the session
41:32where the teams
41:32are switching
41:33from the hard
41:34compound to the
41:35soft to get a
41:35comparison between
41:36the two
41:37you have to think
41:37that all the
41:38engineers are
41:38working pretty much
41:39towards the same
41:40programme
41:41or as we said
41:43maybe some flint
41:44or something in
41:44the make-up
41:45of the run-off
41:45look at that
41:46one completely
41:47off the rim
41:48before the car
41:48came to a stop
41:49I can't believe
41:50that for the
41:51racer
41:51that here
41:52they won't
41:53want a harder
41:54compound
41:54because
41:55obviously the
41:56temperatures
41:56are going to
41:56be pretty
41:57high
41:58and
41:58oh wow
42:00the carcass
42:00went inward
42:01yeah
42:02David Goulthard
42:04doing a bit
42:05of mechanicing
42:05there
42:06let's have a look
42:08again
42:08because it was
42:08a pretty high
42:09speed spin
42:10because it's
42:10just on this
42:11right hand
42:12there
42:12wow
42:12look at it
42:13it's completely
42:14gone
42:14that was almost
42:16as if the tyre
42:16came off the
42:19rim itself
42:19as if the bead
42:20of the tyre
42:21separated from
42:22and fell into
42:23the well of
42:24the rim
42:24surprised it didn't
42:26take the rear
42:26wing off
42:27well the tyre
42:28the tyre didn't
42:29come unraveled
42:30did it
42:30this is
42:31remarkable work
42:32by David
42:32Koulthard
42:33but where

43:10saw the
43:12newsreel
43:12highlights
43:13of the way
43:13Kimi Räikkönen
43:14handled that
43:15Marshall in
43:15Malaysia
43:16he's
43:17likely going to
43:18stay a separate
43:19tour
43:19can I get a
43:20Scottish knuckle
43:21savage if he's
43:21not careful
43:22what impressed me
43:24most about
43:25David Koulthard
43:25there helping
43:26to get the car
43:26off is the fact
43:27he went around
43:28the back
43:28and then pulled
43:28the tyre
43:29away from
43:30the pulley
43:30work
43:30damaging
43:31the car
43:32how many
43:32drivers
43:33would have
43:33done that
43:33see that
43:39rock
43:40that had
43:40to be
43:40removed
43:41to build
43:41the racetrack
43:42inspectors
43:44took a look
43:44at the track
43:45decided
43:45they wanted
43:45to move
43:46well we'll
43:46just straighten
43:47out this
43:47turn a little
43:48bit
43:48we want
43:48to make
43:48the track
43:49a little
43:49bit
43:49faster
43:49the result
43:50was
43:51another
43:53250,000
43:55cubic feet
43:57of rock
43:58that had
43:59to be
43:59excavated
44:00Mr. DuPasquet
44:01we just saw
44:02there from
44:02Michelin
44:03incredible
44:03numbers
44:04I wonder
44:05what he's
44:05saying about
44:05his tyres
44:06now
44:06I remember
44:07a couple
44:08years ago
44:08when
44:08David Courtauld
44:10left
44:10the McLaren
44:10when it
44:11broke down
44:11at the

44:14Darren
44:14Heath
44:15put the
44:15camera
44:15inside
44:16the
44:16cockpit
44:16you remember
44:16that
44:17and took
44:17photographs
44:17of the
44:18brake
44:18the
44:19fiddle

44:19when they

44:22Ron Dennis

44:31the car
44:32he wanted
44:32to stay
44:33there
44:38system
44:39it allowed
44:39David
44:40Courtauld
44:40well it allowed
44:41McLaren
44:41drivers
44:41to use
44:42just the
44:43rear brakes
44:44and then get
44:45tremendous
44:45turning on
44:46the corners
44:46because it
44:47worked exactly
44:48the same way
44:49as the
44:49separate brake
44:50systems on
44:50a tractor
44:51would work
44:51locking up
44:52either the

45:19the flag
45:19that was
45:19interesting
45:20the team

45:21that they

45:25on the
