The 2nd Friday Practice Session for Round 8 of the 2004 F1 season at Montreal.
Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome to coverage of the 2004 Formula One season live on Speed Channel.
00:27I'm Rick DeBruy alongside our technical analyst Steve Matchett and we're all alone this weekend
00:31because Bob Varsha and David Hobbs are off at Le Mans, France preparing for the Endurance Classic.
00:36There's a lot of preparation they have to do along with that, I'm sure.
00:39Partying along the fields of France.
00:41Anyway, we're happy to bring you live coverage of the second free practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:46Boss leaners and the minority on the track right now and Steve, it's a pleasure to be back.
00:49Well, I'll tell you what, it's great to have you back and it's going to be a really fun weekend, I think.
00:54Really looking forward to this.
00:55Well, we see Boss leaners on the track, we need to talk about the fact that his morning didn't go very well.
01:00In fact, we're going to talk about the first practice session that happened earlier tonight.
01:04In fact, he was the first guy to roll to a halt right after the session.
01:08He barely got a minute and a half into the session.
01:10Boss leaners and the minority ground to a halt.
01:13Didn't go at all well for the minority PSO4.
01:16Didn't even get a lap through.
01:17Then Trulli came out in fifth, fastest time of the day.
01:1915.428, Piano Trulli in the Renault R24.
01:24Fourth fastest when it was all done was this guy right here, Ricardo Zonta in the Toyota.
01:29He managed to come along at a 114.952.
01:33And Anthony Davidson, well, we're all going to keep our eye on this team.
01:35Of course, BAR doing fantastic things this year.
01:3814.519 on the session.
01:40That was good for third fastest.
01:42Rubens Barrichello was good for second fastest.
01:45He ended up with a 114.291.
01:48But the fastest on the day?
01:50Have a guess.
01:51No big shock.
01:53This guy right here, the Ferrari belonging to Michael Schumacher.
01:56It was all done.
01:57He had the fastest time, a 114.013.
02:00Not only was he faster than last year's pull time set by Ralph, which was a 115.529,
02:06the first four runners were.
02:07Of course, you have to realize last year they were running in heavy fuel loads.
02:10So they're a little lighter right now, as I can imagine.
02:14And nevertheless, Michael Schumacher doing his usual routine of coming straight out of the box and instantly quick.
02:22Something that always seems to do, Schumacher and Ferrari.
02:24That's where the Michael Schumacher trade is to bang in a very quick lap, straight off,
02:28and then let the competition try and catch up to it.
02:30Sort of like throwing down the gauntlet.
02:32This is what I can do.
02:33Let's see what you guys can do.
02:34Now, as we look through the results from this morning's session,
02:37and one name you're not going to see on there is Giorgio Pentano, no time.
02:42And we're hearing there is a dispute going on in the paddock area,
02:45and I'm unclear as to whether he's going to be even on the track in this session.
02:48It involves money, basically.
02:49It's not that they don't have the money.
02:51It has to do with the fact that he's changing management, trying to change management.
02:55As a result, money's being held up.
02:57Eddie Jordan said, look, if there's no cash, you ain't getting in the car.
03:00And so Giorgio Pentano sat out the first session.
03:03It's a difficult decision, I think, for any team owner,
03:06but I think Jordan's probably done the right thing.
03:08There comes a time when you have to say, look, we need the money or you can't go racing.
03:12This thing is expensive.
03:13That car is costing us an awful lot of money to put on track.
03:17You need to front up.
03:18We'll find out as soon as we can as to whether he's going to be out in this session.
03:23Fernando Alonso out on the track right now.
03:27Another engine development for Renault for this race.
03:32They've had the camshafts reworked, different profiles on the cams,
03:36which has given them a little bit more extra horsepower,
03:38and they hope giving the engine a little bit more drivability.
03:42You need a lot of horsepower around this track, Rick, as you know.
03:45Of course, right there, coming out of the cams, you need instant, fierce traction
03:49to put that power down very quick,
03:51and Renault have been working on that with this new spec engine.
03:55It's a similar engine they're going to be using in Indianapolis as well in a couple of weeks.
03:59They won't really have time to revamp the engine if they have a problem,
04:02so they've kind of got the fingers crossed that everything's going okay
04:05with that revamped lump of this race.
04:06Let's ride along.
04:07And you'll notice something different for this Canadian Grand Prix,
04:30which is, you see the big eight on the side of the car?
04:33Well, that's because there is no tobacco sponsorship this weekend.
04:57That's that power to a good pack right there.
04:59Quite a ride with Fernando Alonso.
05:07Once again, he's pretty easy to spot now with that big eight on the side.
05:11His team, and oh, and he slides at the end, coming off that pit straight.
05:16That is exactly where Kimi Räikkönen lost it last year,
05:18and as a result, had to start from the pit lane when the race began there at the center hair pit.
05:25Well, I guess that's what practice sessions are for.
05:28You're going to get it wrong, make sure it's in this Friday practice session.
05:32Take another look at it.
05:34I think it just gets away from him.
05:37Right there, it's really the apex before it, right?
05:40Just gets it a little bit wide.
05:42Ralph Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya both lost it at that same location,
05:48although they ended up going off and short-cutting that corner this morning.
05:52As Fernando Alonso gathers it back in and heads back for the pits,
05:55we're going to take a brief break.
05:56We'll come back with more from Canada in a moment.
06:03Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship
06:06is brought to you by BMW.
06:08BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
06:20Welcome back to Friday afternoon practice at the Canadian Grand Prix.
06:24Jensen Button, while we were away, went second fastest behind Anthony Davidson.
06:29And now he has claimed the fastest spot of the day,
06:32but I have to tell you, while he was out on that lap,
06:34at one point Juan Pablo Montoya was all over the back of this BAR.
06:41Well, we've got a moment while he's on yet another lap.
06:44Let's take us around this Canadian Grand Prix circuit
06:48with Steve Magic, the Porsche trackman.
06:49All right, well, let's have a look.
06:50Here we are, the circuit, Gilles Villeneuve on the Eelon-Notre-Dame at Montreal.
06:53The shape of the track is like that because of the island in which it sits on.
06:57It's pretty much the perimeter of a small island there.
06:5913 corners on this track.
07:02It's relatively low downforce on this track,
07:05where you can see also turns 3 to 4, 6 to 7 and 8 to 9.
07:09There's some tight corners on there, and, of course, that terrible hairpin
07:11just where the T2 is at the top of the right-hand screen.
07:14So you need, well, you need great torque and you need great horsepower.
07:18You want to try and keep the wings down low,
07:19and also you need to try and keep the suspension relatively stiff.
07:23It's a very tricky and very demanding technical track, here's Rico.
07:27Felipe Massa had the best quote, though.
07:28I loved his line.
07:29He said, Montreal's similar to Imola.
07:31You accelerate, you brake, you go through a chicane.
07:33Right.
07:34That's the description.
07:35There's, look, I mean, just the straight seems to go on and on and on.
07:39That casino straight, you're hitting 170 mile an hour halfway through it.
07:42Nearly 200 miles an hour before that final chicane coming on to the start, finish straight.
07:47Michael Schumacher and Ferrari out on track.
07:50This is the first time they've been out in this second hour practice session of the day.
07:56He went a little wide right there, bounced on the side.
08:01And it looks like, I think he's got a flat tire on the right front.
08:05Yeah, you're right.
08:09Indeed, you can see he went just a little bit wide.
08:11You can see some bouncing in the car, and then suddenly went slow after that.
08:15Typical Michael Luck, though.
08:16He could puncture a tire and have nothing else go wrong.
08:19Meanwhile, a moment ago, while this was happening,
08:21Rudens Barrichello has now gone fastest on the track with a 115.152.
08:26Schumacher set the fastest first sector time of the day at 21.1 through that first sector.
08:31And then you can see right there now just crawling the car back to the pits.
08:35That ain't getting off to a good start.
08:37But as you said, if you're going to have something happen, this is the time.
08:42And I tell you what, to Michael Schumacher particularly, the bad luck always happens in the practice sessions.
08:48Well, with the exception of one race this year, one major problem.
08:53That was at Monaco with the little brake check special.
08:55It is very tough going around these chicane.
08:58Let's have a look, see if we can see exactly what happened.
09:02Oh, he hits.
09:03Oh, he clips the wall.
09:04He actually clipped the wall.
09:05He clipped the wall.
09:05That's what would have done it.
09:06Well, they just banged the rim, broken the rim.
09:08Let's have another look from the onboard shot.
09:10Bang.
09:11Whoa.
09:11You saw sparks coming off the wheel.
09:13Well, you have to get it just right, Michael, but that was a little bit too right.
09:18How can you know the limits if you don't go beyond the rim?
09:21Yeah, right there.
09:24John Todd on the pit wall trying to figure out, do I need a new stopwatch or not?
09:29He hasn't come around yet.
09:29We're going to take a break.
09:31We'll be back with more from the Ile de Notre-Name and the Canadian Grand Prix Friday practice right after this.
09:43Back at the Canadian Grand Prix Friday practice, your ride with Rubens Barrichello.
10:13How close can you come to that wall?
10:19In many respects, Rick, the layout of this track is very reminiscent of a street circuit, isn't it?
10:23There's just no runoff areas.
10:25And then you come onto a part of a track which is more like a traditional racetrack, but there's very little room for error.
10:31In that respect, it's kind of like Monaco.
10:32You've got to be pinpointing accurate exactly where that apex is.
10:36Right there, that part of the track there, we've seen so many drivers run just a tad wide.
10:40And you get the rim into that guardrail and that concrete wall, and really, you're going nowhere.
10:45It's all over.
10:46Ricardo Zonta taking the curb there and just stepping out just a little bit.
10:50He moved from the eighth to seventh on that last lap.
10:52I'll tell you what's catching them out, because you have to use the curbs here.
10:57You're seeing the drivers there right there and there using the curbs.
10:59But unlike Imola, where you can have the suspension set relatively soft to allow the car to be compliant and just gently ride over the curbs,
11:07because of the high speeds along this track, you need to have the suspension very stiff.
11:12And you need to have a very strong and robust car, but there's very little given suspension.
11:17And if you catch those curbs just a little bit wide, as we saw Alonso earlier on,
11:21and we've seen the Toyotas here and the BARs, they're very stiffly sprung and very easy to get out of control.
11:27We saw Michael in the garage just a moment ago, just joining us.
11:32In the first 15 minutes, he just narrowly touched the wall and flattened his right front tire.
11:37And as a result, he's now decided to spend a little quiet time by himself in the garage as they put things back together.
11:43No serious damage, just a flat tire, but enough to bring him in.
11:45Well, it probably would have damaged the suspension as well, because it was pretty much a straight-on hit onto that rim, onto the concrete.
11:52But no serious damage, with no action, no serious damage.
11:54No serious damage to the chassis itself, because with this carbon fiber suspension, it's very stiff and very strong, but only in certain planes.
12:02And if you start loading it in a way that it doesn't want to be loaded, i.e. bashed into a concrete wall,
12:07it will very easily fracture the plies of the suspension.
12:11They'll probably be changing the corner on the car.
12:15It's a little bit on the front suspension.
12:30Look at that little movement there is.
12:34Right there, coming through the tunnel, the bridge, as it is, really, not really a tunnel.
12:38You'll see that the car's desperate to try, the back end wants to overtake the front end under braking.
12:43If you look at the brakes glowing there, right down into the airplane, that's what I'm talking about.
12:46It's a huge amount of brake load around here.
12:49I would say, probably now, the hardest, most demanding track-on brakes on the calendar,
12:53more so than Imola, because of the extra chocanes they've put in.
12:56At Imola.
12:57You have to get close.
13:09The game is how close dare you get.
13:11You see the blue skies.
13:12Let's talk about the weather, because it is an absolutely beautiful day on the Ile de Notre-Dame.
13:1773 degrees.
13:18The track temperature's slowly been climbing.
13:19It's up to 115 degrees right now.
13:2229% humidity, not much.
13:23Very slight breeze.
13:25Overall, sunny forecast.
13:27It's supposed to stay mostly sunny for the entire weekend,
13:29so it should be a great weekend of racing here in Montreal.
13:33And there's a great crowd.
13:34This is the first race where there's no Jacques Villeneuve.
13:37There's some questions as to how would it affect the crowd,
13:39and I can only tell you from what we've seen so far,
13:41there are a lot of people there in the stands for Friday practice.
13:44It's a terribly popular event for the teams as well.
13:47Formula One loves to go to Montreal.
13:50Have a look at these brakes if they're going.
13:51Absolutely, if you remember, right there we saw Juan Pablo Montoya
13:55and both the Willems and the Ferraris towards the end of the race.
13:57The brakes just glowing red right through that corner
14:00and down into the hairpin right there,
14:03unable to dissipate the heat
14:05because there was just so much heat being generated into those brakes.
14:09Everybody's going to be concerned about keeping them cool.
14:14But, yeah, a very popular event for the teams.
14:16They love to come out here early.
14:19They have a couple of days off exploring around the city of Montreal
14:21and it really is like the old days of Adelaide,
14:24the last race when we used to be in Australia to finish the season.
14:27Great party atmosphere throughout the town.
14:30And if you've ever been on the island and had to walk off with the crowds,
14:33I think there's 32 million people in Canada.
14:35You feel like they are all there.
14:37You get stuck in this massive human gridlock
14:40as you're trying to get off the island because you're in the crowds,
14:42but it's a great event because the fans, look at the crowd there,
14:44and we're realizing this is Friday practice.
14:47The fans love it, and there's just a great enthusiasm for this event.
14:51Flavio Briatore keeping an eye on his young man, Fernando Alonso.
14:58Alonso, who's eighth fastest out there right now.
15:01Let's see what he does in this lap.
15:02No major change.
15:10So as Fernando Alonso continues around,
15:12we're going to take a moment to pause ourselves.
15:14Rubens Barrichello, the fastest guy out there.
15:17Don't go away.
15:17We'll be back from Canada right after this.
15:19Welcome back to Friday practice at the Canadian Grand Prix,
15:29and that is Giancarlo Fisichella taking a little bit of an agricultural excursion
15:35at the Santa Hairpin.
15:35Yeah, I'm hoping to point out there that there was a classic example of the car
15:42just taking too much of the curbs,
15:44but actually, I can't really say that was the case there.
15:48Well, don't forget to join us tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock Eastern time
15:52for coverage of qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.
15:54In fact, that show is going to fall right in the middle of our live coverage
15:58of the 24 Hours of Le Mans,
15:59so we know you're going to be tuned to Speed Channel already once again.
16:03Oh, another off course.
16:04Again, that's tomorrow, 1 o'clock Eastern time, only here on Speed.
16:07However, that is subject to blackout.
16:10Giancarlo is having a little bit of an adventure this lap.
16:12Calm down is what he wants to do.
16:16I think he was caught out a couple of Apex's previous,
16:19but we saw that, and he sort of riled him and rattled him,
16:22and he's, you need to take a deep breath and calm down
16:26and have another stab at it.
16:32There's David Coulthard, who is currently 15th fastest.
16:36See how stiffly that McLaren has sprung there, Rick.
16:40David Coulthard went on record saying,
16:42I don't know why we just didn't bring the 19B here.
16:45I realize it's new, but, you know, this thing's basically a piece of junk.
16:49That's the interpretation of what he said.
16:51That's my interpretation.
16:53But he said, why didn't we just bring it to the United States,
16:55bring it to Canada, run it, and at least learn something?
16:58How worse than this car can it be?
17:01Now, you have the problem that you're in the United States,
17:03you're in the North American continent.
17:04You don't have all your spares, access to the factory,
17:07but just consider it a big test session.
17:09There again, you see the back end sort of twitch left, twitch right,
17:22under the heavy brake, and you need to do it.
17:24You need to build up speed very, very quickly as you come out of these corners,
17:29and you need to shed that speed equally fast.
17:32It's very, very demanding.
17:38Only about 58% of the lap on full throttle around here,
17:41and the longest, longest period we watched with Pannis in the Toyota,
17:45longest period on full throttle is, what, 13 seconds around here.
17:49That's like 22 seconds, Indianapolis,
17:50so in that way it's not particularly demanding,
17:52but the demanding part of the engine is finding that torque low down
17:55and then building the speed up very rapidly.
17:58And he's only 18th fastest so far,
18:01the Toyota engine having a lot of horsepower,
18:03but they don't seem to be able to take an advantage of it.
18:05But, meanwhile, the test driver for Toyota,
18:09Riccardo Zonta, just went second fastest.
18:12But they have the ability, the test drivers,
18:14to run some of the stuff that the other guys aren't going to have to run all weekend.
18:17David Kildad, look at that.
18:18I mean, the car has bounced all over the place,
18:20and you can't afford to do that, really,
18:23because as we were saying earlier on,
18:25the walls are so close.
18:27You start to unsettle the chassis around here
18:29by bouncing over the curb in that last chicane,
18:32and before you know it, slam,
18:34you're in that concrete wall,
18:36and there's all bits of cart flying everywhere.
18:39So, Ralph Schumacher short-cutting the center curve yet again.
18:45He's done it before.
18:45He started doing it this morning.
18:46I don't think he's done it again this afternoon.
18:48What these guys have been working on throughout this session,
18:53really, they'll work on one second at a time.
18:56They'll get the car to work best through what they would consider to be the worst corner.
19:00And once they've found that,
19:01and they've improved the speed around corner,
19:03let's say, corner one, for example,
19:05just to pick a number, it doesn't matter,
19:06then you find that the car understeer or oversteer is a little bit further around.
19:09You have to work on that.
19:10So, eventually, you come up with a compromise of that very elusive balance,
19:15that word in Formula One,
19:16the combination between understeer and oversteer.
19:19You'll never get rid of either of them.
19:21You have to find there's a balance in between,
19:22a common ground where the driver and the chassis works as best as it's going to be.
19:27Following Zonta and the Toyota driving around.
19:31Once again, he's second fastest.
19:32His fastest time today is a 115.213.
19:35And there is Ralph Schumacher, last year's pull sitter,
19:38who also won here back in 2001.
19:41And as you talked about, or we've mentioned before,
19:44criticized for last year's race when he was driving around behind his brother.
19:47And he said, look, there was no way I could catch up to him.
19:50I wasn't going to do anything stupid and risk it.
19:52And everybody else said, well, wait a minute.
19:53Isn't that what you're there for, to take the risk?
19:55Are you there to finish second?
19:58Well, and in his defense as well,
19:59both the Williams, the FW25 cars from last year,
20:03the single keel chassis,
20:04were both suffering with extreme brake wear.
20:07And they were all nursing the cars towards the end.
20:09Of course, they were trying to disguise that as best as possible,
20:12because the last thing you want to do
20:13is try to give away to the opposition the weakness on the car.
20:16Ferrari, as we said at the top of the show,
20:18were also in that boat as well.
20:19So it's very difficult to be able to pull a move to overtake.
20:23But that criticism was, I don't know,
20:26probably 50-50 fair and unfair.
20:28And then meanwhile, there was Fernando Alonso,
20:30who was fourth last year,
20:31who was all over the back of Montoya,
20:33going, just let me by, guys.
20:34I think I can take him if you'll just let me by.
20:36This car's working very well over the curbs.
20:39It seems to be working certainly much better,
20:42a lot more compliance in the chassis,
20:44in the suspension than the McLaren, that's for sure.
20:49Ralph is now seventh fastest.
20:51This track, by its location, of course,
20:56is very susceptible to wind direction change.
20:59It's right on the St. Lawrence Seaway.
21:02And you can look out the back of the pits
21:04and see fairly big cargo ships seeming to cruise
21:07about 20 feet behind the wall there.
21:10And very susceptible to wind change.
21:12And, of course, that plays havoc with these cars.
21:14They're so aero-sensitive.
21:16And just on the other side,
21:18back behind the garages and the pits,
21:21is what was the Olympic Rowing Basin for 1976,
21:24for the Olympics that happened in Montreal.
21:26And I remember that well,
21:27because I sat in the stands
21:28and watched the Olympic Rowing event.
21:30A friend and I went up there one year,
21:31and it was a great opportunity to sit there.
21:33Little did I realize, I think 15 years later,
21:36I was back doing pits for the Canadian Grand Prix.
21:39In 1976, I camped in this mud hole
21:41on the edge of Montreal,
21:44came back to the Formula One race
21:45and stayed in the Ritz-Carlton.
21:46Boy, was that a change.
21:49Michael Schumacher out on the track now.
21:52So repaired chassis to the right-hand front suspension.
21:55We saw them working earlier on.
21:57New aero package on the Ferrari 2.
21:58New front and rear wings
22:00for this low downforce track.
22:02And the first race that they've had
22:03these wings on the car.
22:06They have tested them, of course,
22:07with Fiorano and Monza.
22:08This is the first race
22:09with these new wing configurations
22:10on the F2004.
22:12The thing looked very stable through there.
22:16That's the point of the track
22:17you want to watch for,
22:17as we keep saying,
22:18as they come under that little bridge
22:19just before the run down
22:21into the hairpin.
22:23The cars are very nervous,
22:25more so here
22:25because they've got so little wing on.
22:27So there's less downforce on the car
22:29to try and stabilize the car
22:30and the braking.
22:31And as soon as the drivers
22:32slam onto the brakes here,
22:34as you have to,
22:35without the benefit
22:36of that downforce on the car,
22:37the rear becomes
22:38very, very unstable.
22:46Michael Schumacher
22:47comes across the line.
22:49Let's see what he gets.
22:51He is second fastest
22:53behind his teammate,
22:54Rubens Barrichello,
22:55moving the Toyota
22:56Riccardo Zanta off
22:57one more spot
22:58back to third.
23:00This is the top eight.
23:01We'll be back in a moment.
23:02Speed Channel's coverage
23:15of the FIA Formula One
23:16World Championship
23:17is brought to you by
23:18the United States Grand Prix.
23:20The United States Grand Prix
23:21at Indianapolis
23:22has a new date,
23:23June 20, 2004.
23:25Tickets can be purchased online
23:27at IndianapolisMotorspeedway.com
23:29or by calling 800-822-ENDY.
23:36Michael Schumacher
23:37out on the track right now,
23:38just finishing his lap.
23:39What's he going to do?
23:40He does not improve,
23:41so he stays second fastest.
23:43He is in search of sevens
23:44this weekend.
23:46He wants this to be
23:46his seventh victory of the year.
23:48This would be the seventh time
23:49he has won at this track.
23:51And he would love
23:54to make it also
23:56his seventh pull here as well.
24:00And if you win seven times
24:02at this track,
24:03that will be the first time
24:04that one driver
24:05has won seven times
24:06at a single race.
24:11That's how I look at
24:12Kimi Raikkonen
24:13and the McLaren
24:14is capable of.
24:15Remember,
24:16all these times
24:16are pretty,
24:18I would say,
24:18irrelevant,
24:19but it's very difficult
24:19to pitch the cars
24:21against each other
24:21at the moment
24:21because they'll be running
24:22different compounds
24:23and different constructions
24:25of tyre
24:25and different fuel loads
24:26on the car
24:27getting ready
24:27for qualifying tomorrow.
24:28But nevertheless,
24:32it's interesting to see
24:32not so much
24:33on the final
24:34speed track times,
24:36but to see how the car
24:37reacts around the track.
24:38That's what we're looking for,
24:39really.
24:40That's how the teams
24:40are gauging
24:41how well the things
24:42are progressing,
24:43really.
24:43how smooth the drivers
24:44are with the cars.
24:47Ron Dennis
24:48watching it all,
24:49trying to figure out
24:49how does he change
24:50the luck of this team
24:51that's having its worst start
24:53definitely in the 25 years
24:54that he's been around
24:55and potentially
24:56in the entire time
24:57that McLaren has been around.
24:59Yeah, well, the new car
25:02as you were saying,
25:03Ricky, it has been tested.
25:04It's been out at Silverstone.
25:06They have not brought it
25:07to this track
25:07and they're saying,
25:08well, you know,
25:09we need to work on it.
25:10You need to,
25:11it's the crossover
25:13between how reliable
25:15it's going to be
25:15and how much performance
25:16you're going to get out of it.
25:18And I think in a way
25:18they were probably right
25:19not to bring it here,
25:20but I would like to see it
25:21just to see the thing.
25:22Let's have a look
25:23what they've done with it.
25:24Well, realize you don't have
25:25a lot of testing time.
25:25We've got six races
25:26in eight weeks.
25:28You know, might not
25:28have been a bad way
25:29to, you know,
25:30get up to speed
25:30fairly quickly.
25:32We'll be back
25:32with more from Canada
25:33after this.
25:55Is that cool or what?
26:01I know.
26:02It's incredible.
26:03The 450 horsepower
26:05Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

27:25Here in Canada,
27:26that is the BAR
27:27belonging to Anthony Davidson
27:28who has kissed something.
27:31We can only assume
27:31a wall, tires,
27:32whatever it may be,
27:33and as a result,
27:34you saw the right front tire
27:35and suspension
27:36a bit askew.
27:38There it is.
27:38It's a very similar situation
27:40to what we saw
27:40with Michael Schumacher's Ferrari,
27:42that right front.
27:44And surprisingly enough,
27:4520.9 Davidson had just posted
27:47in this first sector,
27:48so he was on a flyer.
27:50And he was quick,
27:51as they say,
27:52right up until the point
27:54where he wrote the car off.
27:55Well, he was third fastest
27:56in the morning session.
27:57He turned to 114.519
27:59this morning.
28:00He's been very fast
28:02all year long
28:03in these Friday
28:03qualifying sessions,
28:04and unfortunately,
28:05he got a little too fast
28:07in this session.
28:09Yeah, you can see that.
28:10That's what we're talking about.
28:11You know,
28:11you take a direct hit
28:12onto the rim like that
28:13and it just loads
28:14the suspension up
28:15and I think that's broken
28:16the camber block
28:17which is bolted
28:17onto the top
28:18of the upright.
28:21And it's so easy.
28:23As I said,
28:24there's no,
28:25I mean,
28:25we haven't seen actually,
28:26I mean,
28:26this is all speculation
28:27because we haven't seen
28:28exactly what happened,
28:29but there is just no room
28:30for error.
28:30You go just a tad wide
28:31and that's the result.
28:34Because normally,
28:35the tracks we've seen before
28:35and certainly the Nürburgring,
28:37for example,
28:37in the race before
28:38with all that grass creep
28:39that they put
28:40on the backside of the kerbs.
28:41Let's have a look.
28:42Now,
28:42is this going to be
28:42under braking?
28:43Absolutely.
28:45Ooh.
28:47Ooh,
28:47that was a big hit.
28:48That was a bit more
28:49than a kiss.
28:51I believe that was
28:51a full embrace.
28:52Yeah,
28:52and I tell you what,
28:53that's what we're talking about,
28:54you know,
28:54under braking
28:55without so much downforce
28:56on the car.
28:57They're so nervous
28:58the back end
28:59of these cars these days.
29:00It just starts,
29:01the weight transfers
29:02to the front,
29:03the rear end of the car
29:04becomes very light.
29:04You can see there
29:05it's ripped the rim,
29:06the outside of the rim
29:07right off the right rear.
29:09That was a good solid hit.
29:10Four times this year,
29:11Anthony Davidson
29:12has been fastest
29:13in the second practice
29:14in Bahrain,
29:15San Marino,
29:15Spain,
29:16Monaco.
29:16It is not going to happen
29:17here in Canada.
29:19We'll be back.
29:20Back in Canada,
29:27you're riding with
29:28six-time world champion
29:29Michael Schumacher.
29:30again,
29:36very stable,
29:55under that little bridge
29:58at the approach to terms
29:59at the approach to terms
29:59of eight and nine
29:59and down into the hairpimp.
30:03A little pangle,
30:04the same bridge.
30:08A moment ago,
30:08Michael improved his time
30:09slightly,
30:10but still second fastest.
30:12This last lap he turned in
30:13before this one,
30:14he actually went a touch
30:15slower.
30:16Let's see what he can do
30:17in this lap.
30:18Right behind him,
30:19I believe,
30:19is still Jenson Button,
30:20who's just finally gone out
30:22and about to try to catch up.
30:24Nope.
30:25Michael Schumacher
30:26goes in to the pits.
30:29It's all about really
30:30tire degradation
30:31in these sessions as well.
30:33You want to put the fuel load
30:34into the car
30:34that you think
30:35you're going to be running
30:36in qualifying.
30:37Try it on the soft compound
30:38supplied by your tire supplier.
30:40Try it on the hard compound
30:41and have a look at the tires
30:43after a five or ten lap stint
30:44and see whether or not
30:46you're going to be able
30:46to run the softer compound
30:48in the race.
30:49All the teams would love
30:50to run the softer compound,
30:51of course,
30:52but it's all down
30:52to tire degradation.
30:54Well, don't forget,
30:54this week we're in Canada,
30:55but next week
30:57it is live coverage
30:58of the Canadian Grand Prix
30:59here on Speed Channel.
31:00We'll kick things off
31:01at 12 noon Eastern time.
31:03I'm sorry,
31:04we're talking about
31:04the Canadian Grand Prix.
31:0512 noon Eastern time
31:06with the Accurate Pre-Race show.
31:09We'll be live straight through
31:10to the post-race interviews
31:11where our own Peter Windsor
31:12will be asking the questions
31:13and for the second straight year
31:14we'll be happy
31:15to have Townsend Bell
31:15joining us.
31:16That's this Sunday
31:17for the Canadian Grand Prix.
31:18That's Sunday
31:19at noon Eastern time
31:20and remember
31:20that's a little bit earlier
31:21because of the Euro 2004 soccer match
31:23has moved the time back
31:25just a little bit.
31:26You can see it live
31:26only here on Speed,
31:28but don't forget
31:28it is subject to blackout.
31:30So once again,
31:31the Canadian Grand Prix
31:32this weekend,
31:33the U.S. Grand Prix
31:34next weekend.
31:35Too many Grand Prix's
31:38get too confused these days.
31:40Yeah.
31:40Well,
31:41I don't know if you can have
31:42too many Grand Prix.
31:43Personally,
31:43I love them all,
31:44but it is...
31:45Well,
31:45now it's the North American swing,
31:46which actually makes sense.
31:47Come to Canada
31:48and a week later
31:49go to the United States.
31:50It makes a lot of sense
31:51for the teams
31:51because obviously
31:52they only have to drop down
31:53to Indianapolis
31:53from Montreal
31:55and these are both races
31:57that the teams refer to
31:58as flyaway races,
31:59which means,
32:00of course,
32:00they haven't got
32:00their transporters
32:01with them,
32:02their trucks.
32:03Everything is packed
32:04into cargo containers
32:06and put onto 747s
32:08and flown over the Atlantic.
32:09So it makes a lot of sense
32:10to try and do all that
32:11in one hit
32:11as opposed to
32:12go back to Europe,
32:14unload everything,
32:14put it back under the transporters,
32:16be one or two races in Europe
32:17and then put everything
32:18back into containers again
32:19and ship it over.
32:20So in that respect,
32:22it's very good
32:22for the team to do it.
32:24The only issue coming
32:25is if you have a big shunt here,
32:27then you've got to have
32:28a lot of spares
32:28or something else
32:29shipped over as a result.
32:30But if you can emerge
32:31in this race
32:31in fairly good shape,
32:33you can simply move on
32:34to the U.S. Grand Prix
32:35and put things back together,
32:37take it apart
32:37and make sure it all works well
32:39and you're off racing again.
32:41Well, if the teams think
32:42they've got a particular problem,
32:43if something shows up
32:44on the Friday or Saturday,
32:46for example,
32:47with the transmissions,
32:47they're quite capable
32:48of taking the transmissions off,
32:50putting them onto a plane
32:51with a couple of the guys
32:52and sending them back
32:52to Wimbledon
32:53to work on them
32:53and then bring out
32:54new components
32:55ready for the Indianapolis rebuild,
32:57which will happen
32:57Tuesday, Wednesday
32:59in the build-up to Indianapolis.
33:00They will rework the cars
33:01at Indianapolis Track.
33:03So they can do it,
33:04but of course,
33:05as you rightly say,
33:06it is pretty much
33:07a logistical nightmare
33:08to have to do it.
33:09I mean,
33:09there are literally
33:10tons and tons
33:11of equipment
33:12per team they carry.
33:14And all the cargo cases now
33:16are designed in such a way
33:18they're actually profiled
33:19to fit absolutely perfectly
33:20into the hold
33:21of a cargo plane.
33:22So there's not a square,
33:24cubic centimetre of space
33:26which isn't optimised,
33:27really.
33:27It's an adventure itself
33:28just getting these things
33:29around the world
33:30and the way they've created
33:31a system to do that.
33:32Yeah.
33:33We saw earlier on
33:34a lot of red glow
33:37from this car right here
33:38from the BAR chassis.
33:40And again,
33:40you're going to see
33:41that an awful lot
33:42of these brakes glowing hot.
33:43We're seeing Button
33:44and Yarno Trulli,
33:46but we also,
33:47well,
33:47we couldn't quite see him do it.
33:49De Mata just went P3
33:51with a 115.149.
33:53I think he just came through
34:02that under the bridge
34:03in between turn nine.
34:04Felt the rear end
34:05start to go a little light
34:06what we've been talking about
34:07and decided just get off the,
34:09get off the power,
34:10just run right a little bit
34:11and stop the thing
34:12from the rear end of the car
34:14trying to overtake the front.
34:15A wise move,
34:16I should say.
34:21Yarno Trulli,
34:22the winner at Monaco,
34:23and there once again
34:25you see a great view
34:26of his name on the side pod
34:27as a result of not having
34:28tobacco sponsorship.
34:30Yarno Trulli gets a little
34:31extra exposure on his own.
34:34Ralph Schumacher,
34:35Olivier Panis,
34:36Panis who,
34:36Panis who,
34:37had that big,
34:39big shunt here
34:40back in 1997,
34:43broke both his legs
34:43when he was driving for Pro.
34:46Yeah, boy,
34:47it's very easy to do.
34:49It's very easy
34:49to get it wrong around here
34:50and that last chicane
34:51that they've just gone through
34:52is the really,
34:53the point you've got to watch.
34:54It's so easy.
34:55You come absolutely
34:56hammering down that long
34:57straight,
34:58that casino straight,
34:59Dwight the Casino.
35:00You're just touching like
35:01200 miles an hour
35:02where you have to slam
35:03on that brake
35:03and then you go through
35:04and then you go through
35:04that chicane at 50.
35:05So you're scrubbing up
35:06150 miles an hour
35:08in like,
35:08you know,
35:09a second.
35:10You get that fractionally wrong,
35:11just clip that apex wrong
35:13and bang,
35:13you're into that concrete
35:14so quick.
35:15That's Takuma Sato
35:19who's 6th fastest.
35:20These guys all quick run here
35:22already,
35:22B.A.R.
35:24Right now,
35:25Sato has the fastest
35:26in the first sector.
35:27Let's see what he does
35:28on this one.
35:29He goes fastest,
35:30Takuma Sato
35:31is now fastest.
35:33Almost starts to step out
35:34a little bit
35:34at the very end.
35:36A lot of people
35:37are talking about
35:37this could be
35:38a B.A.R. track
35:39this weekend,
35:40the fact that this could be
35:41a potential pull
35:41for these guys
35:42is because this track
35:43has the kind of conditions
35:45that favor
35:46what they've got
35:47in this chassis
35:48and more importantly,
35:49what they've got
35:50in an engine compartment.
35:55It's Rubens Barrichello
35:56who apparently
35:58following the
35:59boss leaner's route.
36:00Yes, absolutely.
36:00Well, you can just see
36:01the back end of the car
36:02again just start
36:03to step out
36:03and Rubens,
36:05I think,
36:05wisely getting off
36:06the power
36:07and just trying
36:07to correct it.
36:08Running wide
36:08but it stops the thing
36:09coming back around
36:10the front
36:11and slamming
36:11into the wall.
36:12Rubens just ahead
36:16of, I believe,
36:17is that
36:17Ralph right behind
36:19him, Ralph Schumacher
36:20right behind him.
36:21Once again,
36:21last year's pole sitter.
36:23Ralph Schumacher
36:23right now
36:24is down
36:27quite a ways
36:28in 12th.
36:30See, the way
36:31to prevent that,
36:32really,
36:32what Rubens
36:33is suffering from there,
36:34what all the drivers
36:34are suffering from
36:35is to put more
36:36wing on the car.
36:37But you put more
36:37wing on the car
36:38and you lose
36:39that straight line speed.
36:41You know,
36:41that's what F1
36:42engineering is right there.
36:43It's all about compromise.
36:44What do you do?
36:45What's more important?
36:46Is it more important
36:47to go fast
36:47in the turns
36:48for a track
36:49or do you want
36:49to take advantage
36:50of the straightaways
36:51and the straight line speed?
36:52By the way,
36:55we just saw Jordan
36:56go by.
36:56There are rumors
36:57and once again,
36:58these are just rumors
36:59floating around the paddock
37:00this weekend
37:00that the Jordan team
37:02may be sold.
37:03You've heard that rumor
37:04before.
37:05This rumor is saying
37:06it could happen
37:06before the British Grand Prix
37:08of this year
37:08if you imagine that.
37:10That one we'll try
37:11and update
37:11as the weekend
37:12goes by
37:13and it looks like
37:14Ralph Schumacher
37:15is rolling
37:16very slowly.
37:17We'll find out why
37:18when we come back.
37:19Win one,
37:25they call you a champion.
37:28Win four,
37:29they call you a dynasty.
37:32What do they call you
37:33when you win
37:3313 years in a row?
37:36A VN.
37:38Biden on board
37:39with Michael Schumacher.
37:40He's looking for
37:41his seventh victory
37:42this year.
37:42If he does get it,
37:43he'll also be
37:44his third in a row here.
37:45He won in 2002
37:46and in 2003.
37:49You know,
37:50you look at what
37:51Ferrari have done.
37:53Of course,
37:54they've got a great
37:54driver talent
37:55in Michael Schumacher.
37:56You know what Ferrari
37:56have done with
37:57his chassis
37:57and the Ikea.
37:59And it's development
37:59of last year's 2003
38:01double championship
38:02winning chassis
38:03and the great car
38:04of the F2002
38:05which really
38:06caught the world
38:07off guard
38:08as opposed to
38:08the other Formula 1
38:09teams really
38:10had no response
38:10for it.
38:11but the car
38:12works well
38:12everywhere.
38:14Every track
38:14whether it's
38:15low speed,
38:15high speed,
38:16whether it's
38:16the tight corners,
38:19the chicanes
38:20around Imola
38:20where you need
38:21the suspension
38:21very soft.
38:22Here where you
38:22need the suspension
38:23relatively hard
38:24but you still need
38:25to get the car
38:25to work over
38:26the curbs.
38:27Everywhere it seems
38:28to work well
38:28and the driver's input
38:29says it all.
38:30It's so smooth.
38:31Michael Schumacher
38:58right now
38:59on this Friday
39:00practice session
39:00is chasing
39:01to Kumisata
39:02who is the fastest
39:03driver today.
39:04He's got a
39:04114.086
39:07Now,
39:09moments ago
39:09we were just
39:10talking about
39:10how the Ferrari
39:12chassis worked
39:12so well.
39:13Keep your eye
39:14on the right hand.
39:16There's an adjustment
39:17going off
39:18on the steering
39:18wheel right there.
39:20Probably changing
39:21the diff pressures
39:22around the track
39:23but then also
39:24later on
39:25when he came
39:26under the bridge
39:27at turn 8
39:28just a little
39:29adjustment
39:30on the brake
39:30bias as well.
39:31with his right
39:31hand off
39:32off the steering
39:33wheel
39:33putting a little
39:34bit more
39:35brake bias
39:35towards the
39:36rear of the
39:36car
39:36and it works
39:38so well.
39:40A little bit
39:40of body work
39:41there.
39:41It looks like
39:42a part of the
39:42chimney
39:43off one of the
39:44cars.
39:45By the way,
39:45we should mention
39:46when we were
39:46going into
39:47brake,
39:47Ralph Schumacher
39:48was slowing
39:48and just as we
39:50started to go
39:50on the commercial
39:51what we realized
39:51was he was
39:52slowing just so
39:53he could speed
39:53up getting a
39:54gap between
39:54himself and
39:54the other
39:55cars.
39:55There was no
39:56problem with
39:56Ralph Schumacher
39:57although ultimately
39:58I can't say it
39:59did him any good
39:59because he is still
40:0013th fastest on
40:01the track.
40:04Renault working
40:05well.
40:06Alonso now up to
40:07P2.
40:0814.265 best of the
40:11day for Alonso.
40:12Sato's at the top
40:13of the sheets with
40:13the 14 dead.
40:14And bear in mind
40:15last year's poll time
40:16rig for the 1.155.
40:17That's a full
40:18second and a half
40:19off the pace
40:20from last year.
40:21And I would say
40:2199% of that.
40:24Well,
40:24yeah,
40:25it's down to the
40:25tyres.
40:25The tyre war,
40:27the ongoing battle
40:28for super-chemistry
40:29between Michelin
40:31and Bridgestone
40:32are just producing
40:33some fantastic tyres.
40:35Remember a couple
40:35of races ago
40:35we were talking
40:36about now
40:36that the new
40:37compound
40:37actually forming
40:38a chemical reaction
40:40with the surface
40:41of the asphalt
40:41to improve the
40:42grip.
40:45That's where a lot
40:46of the performance
40:47is coming from.
40:47Really on a
40:48year-to-year basis.
40:49And really,
40:49I have to say,
40:50you want to control
40:50the speeds on the car,
40:52you have to come up
40:53with a controlled tyre.
40:54And that's what
40:55is actually being
40:56talked about
40:56in Formula 1
40:57is having a single
40:58tyre manufacturer.
41:00I have to say,
41:00you know,
41:01I'm saying that
41:01because I think
41:02it would slow
41:02the cars down,
41:03but I hate to see it
41:04because it takes away
41:05from the technical
41:06challenge,
41:06which to me
41:08and of course
41:08a lot of others,
41:09a lot of other
41:09engineers and fans
41:10around the world,
41:11that's what the
41:11challenge of F1 is.
41:13It's making one car
41:14go quicker than the next
41:15by any legal,
41:16technical means
41:17possible.
41:19And the tyre
41:20word legal
41:20for all you
41:23legal aficionados
41:24out there,
41:25we have made
41:26that disclaimer.
41:29Fernando Alonso
41:30continues to chase
41:31around a faster lap
41:32behind the Jordan
41:33right now.
41:34We're going to take
41:34a brief break
41:35and we'll come back
41:36in a moment
41:36and find out
41:36if he was able
41:37to pull it off.
41:49Okay.
41:51How many times
41:52have I told you
41:52you accelerate
41:54at the apex
41:55through the corner?
41:57I was.
41:59Huh.
42:04Live for the curves.
42:07Porsche Cayenne.
42:08There is no substitute.
42:09The thrill of white
42:19knuckle driving

42:21white knuckles.
