00:00:00Qualifying in Formula One means one flying lap.
00:00:05One lap on the absolute limit.
00:00:08Using every inch of the circuit, and sometimes more.
00:00:11But at Monaco, an inch can make all the difference.
00:00:14Get it right, and...
00:00:16He gets it! The pole position by three!
00:00:18Get it wrong, and...
00:00:22On a circuit where passing on track is virtually impossible,
00:00:25the driver who tops qualifying today
00:00:28just might find himself standing on the top step of the Royal Box tomorrow.
00:00:32Qualifying at Monaco is next.
00:00:58Every street circuit in the world, from Surfer's Paradise to Toronto,
00:01:05Macau to Long Beach, began with an idea to be like Monaco.
00:01:10Welcome to the original.
00:01:12But before you can race the Grand Prix of Monaco, you must qualify.
00:01:17Hello, everyone, and welcome to Speed Channel's coverage of qualifying
00:01:20for Round 6 of the 2004 Formula One World Championship.
00:01:23I'm Bob Varsha. Joining me as always, David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:01:27And we can tell you that down in that spanking new Pitt Complex,
00:01:31here in the Principality, there is some serious noodling going on,
00:01:35because the first round of single-car qualifying produced some big surprises.
00:01:40Let's check out the highlights.
00:01:42George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, all-stars of the new Oceans 12.
00:01:48Sequel to Oceans 11 are here, doing a deal with the Jaguar team.
00:01:53First man on track, Michael Schumacher.
00:01:55Everybody expected a number that would blow everyone away,
00:01:57but instead he was almost two seconds off his morning practice time.
00:02:00Oh, Fernando Alonso, who's been pretty quick most all weekend.
00:02:04Both Renaults have.
00:02:05At this stage, he ended up at the top of the timesheets.
00:02:08In the end, he would end up in fourth spot.
00:02:11Then Ralph Schumacher went out, who hasn't been very quick all weekend,
00:02:16and turned in an absolute blinder.
00:02:18It was quickest at the time, and it stayed quickest.
00:02:20Then in the C23 Sauber, Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:02:24He would end up fifth in provisional qualifying,
00:02:26but that car working very well around this track, certainly over the curbs.
00:02:30And another good runner, the BAR-06 chassis, Jenson Button.
00:02:34Finished fourth in provisional qualifying, 920 brake horsepower,
00:02:37pushing that chassis along.
00:02:39Actually, fine job.
00:02:41Then the two McLansmen out.
00:02:42Had a pretty lacklusty year so far,
00:02:44but after the Queen opened their spanking new palace in England last week,
00:02:47they really came to life.
00:02:49David Coulthard, two-time winning and on the pole,
00:02:52ended up third overall.
00:02:54And Kimi Reiklund went out just after him,
00:02:56and snagged second spot at the time,
00:02:58and it was to stay second fastest.
00:03:00So he's going to go out late.
00:03:02Last of the heavy hitters on track,
00:03:03Juan Pablo Montoya, the defending champion here on the streets of Monaco.
00:03:07But he was a disappointment,
00:03:09coming up eight tenths slower than his morning practice,
00:03:11ninth on the provisional grid.
00:03:13Now, of course, those times are now all eliminated.
00:03:16All they do is set the running order.
00:03:18For the second round of single lap qualifying,
00:03:21to set the grid for Sunday morning's race.
00:03:23There you see the running order.
00:03:26They'll come out.
00:03:27GM Arena Bruni, with the Minardi team,
00:03:29out-qualified by his teammate, Jolt Baumgartner.
00:03:32That was a bit of a headline in itself.
00:03:34The Hungarian considered vastly inferior to the Italian as a driver.
00:03:38And as you can see, Michael Schumacher's going to go seventh.
00:03:42Everybody was thinking he would be going last,
00:03:44but in fact it will be his brother in the BMW Williams who's going last.
00:03:47Unfortunately, having changed an engine on Thursday in practice,
00:03:51he will in fact lose ten spots wherever he qualifies today.
00:03:55So Bridgestone runner there looking sixteenth spot for Ziegela.
00:04:01So rounded by Michelin.
00:04:03Tires very much the story this weekend.
00:04:05Michelin supposedly have an advantage over one quick lap,
00:04:08while the Bridgestones come into their best later on in the race.
00:04:12And Monaco is all about qualifying.
00:04:14While we have a moment, we'll look at the weather.
00:04:17Temperature about 70 degrees.
00:04:19Beautiful day.
00:04:21And there's a classic Monaco shot.
00:04:24Everyone enjoying their brunch.
00:04:27Waiting for the cars to come out and qualify.
00:04:29Let's check our Porsche track map with David Hobbs.
00:04:31Well, of course, it's just over two miles.
00:04:33It's the shortest track in the whole series.
00:04:35And obviously, as you can see, the tightest by a long way.
00:04:38Pretty hilly.
00:04:39You come up to Sandoval at about 140 miles an hour,
00:04:41and you turn up Beau Rivard.
00:04:43It's quite a steep uphill climb all the way to Massonet.
00:04:45Long, long left-hander there.
00:04:47And you start dropping down through Casino down to Mirabeau.
00:04:50It's a downhill approach there.
00:04:51Very difficult to break for.
00:04:52Still going downhill to the Grand Hotel Hairpin.
00:04:54Very, very tight.
00:04:56Tightest corner in all of Formula One.
00:04:57About 25 miles an hour.
00:04:58Down to Portier and into the tunnel.
00:05:00And as you exit the tunnel, 185 miles an hour
00:05:03going to the Nouvelle Chicane.
00:05:04A very tight left, right, left.
00:05:07Tight, very tight exit.
00:05:08Then Tabax, a very fast sweeper.
00:05:10The swimming pool complex also very fast and bumpy over the kerbs.
00:05:14Around the back of the pool there.
00:05:16It's also very tight.
00:05:18Very incredible enough.
00:05:20This morning, in pre-qualifying practice,
00:05:22Michael Schumacher turned the lap at 101 and a half miles an hour
00:05:26around this tight little circuit.
00:05:28Incredible.
00:05:29The length of the circuit has changed slightly.
00:05:31Land was reclaimed out of the harbor to build the new pits complex.
00:05:34The track around the swimming pool section was rerouted slightly.
00:05:37So we'll set some new times today.
00:05:39As you can see, the team's hard at work getting ready for Jimmy Bruni to head out in the Minardi.
00:05:45Well, we have a moment.
00:05:46We'll take a break and be back with more coverage of the grandest Grand Prix of all.
00:05:51Here's what the harbor looks like if you arrive on one of these fabulous yachts.
00:05:57Not quite the route we took.
00:05:59We'll be back.
00:06:01Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship
00:06:08is brought to you by BMW.
00:06:10BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
00:06:12And by Circuit City.
00:06:14Circuit City.
00:06:15Check us out at CircuitCity.com.
00:06:20Welcome back.
00:06:21First car on track.
00:06:22This is Gian Maria, or Jimmy Bruni,
00:06:24who had never raced on the streets of the Principality before.
00:06:27Now here he is in a Formula One car.
00:06:30Although it must be said, the Minardi Cosworth's almost three seconds slower
00:06:35than the next slowest car, Giorgio Pantano, in the Jordan Ford.
00:06:38Let's see what Bruni can do.
00:06:44Got to be one of the most scary corners in all of racing.
00:06:46That sweep through the tunnel there.
00:06:48Completely blind all the way around.
00:06:49And by the time you get to the end of it, you're doing about 180 mile an hour.
00:06:53This is a warm-up lap for Bruni.
00:06:55I'm surprised that the Minardis are so slow in comparison to the other teams around Monaco,
00:07:02because it's a bit of an equalizing track as far as engine performance is concerned.
00:07:07We're saying this during first of sessions.
00:07:09Actually, Minardi seem distinctly off the pace here in comparison to some of the other tracks.
00:07:13Yeah, normally, as you say, the tightness of this circuit, the shortness of it and everything else
00:07:18kind of evens things out, you would think.
00:07:23Coming around, of course.
00:07:24A lot of very, very, very difficult and tight corners to get around.
00:07:27And, of course, someone like Sandovat, very difficult, fast approach, a very quick sweeping right-hander.
00:07:36And, as you can see, you have absolutely no room for error here anywhere.
00:07:39The guardrail coming right to the edge of the road.
00:07:43Watch his hands.
00:07:45Bruni got no laps at all in either of the morning practices.
00:07:55Several wags in the press room suggested it might have something to do with the presence of his new girlfriend.
00:08:02Ostia de Kretzer, I believe, is her name.
00:08:04She was his grid girl, the girl holding the lollipop, the sign indicating his grid position
00:08:09at the very first round of the championship in Melbourne, Australia.
00:08:12That might explain his lack of pace.
00:08:18177.4 miles an hour.
00:08:22Bruni through the speed trap.
00:08:25Whoa!
00:08:26Wow, you can see him working there.
00:08:27He was!
00:08:28Look at this for tight coming out of the exit of that, uh, Anthony Nogue's corner.
00:08:43120.115.
00:08:49That's an improvement for Bruni, who in the first round lapped at 120.740.
00:08:58Kudos to those mechanics who soldier on with this lackluster minority team.
00:09:03On average, these cars have lapped about 1.1 seconds slower than anyone else on the grid thus far this season.
00:09:10A little lock up there in the right front going into Nogue's.
00:09:12Yeah, even coming out of Nogue's, the right front tire is actually off the track.
00:09:17This is his teammate, Jolt Baumgartner, put in Formula One by his fans in Hungary, who ponied up a collection to buy him a drive.
00:09:28Oh!
00:09:33Whoa!
00:09:34Oh!
00:09:35It's on the next to Masle there.
00:09:36Car, Bruni's car look pretty pretty.
00:09:40He's up on his teammate by 51 thousands at the first intermediate.
00:09:49Back of the car come round nicely there, didn't it?
00:09:51Yeah.
00:09:52Getting round of that grand hotel.
00:09:53Now under the tunnel.
00:09:56Great sounds here.
00:09:57Dead blind at 180 miles an hour plus.
00:10:12This is the to-back corner.
00:10:15There's a bit of damper work doing to this car.
00:10:22Here's the new section of track. Lost the lead over his teammate.
00:10:28Oh!
00:10:30He's too stiff, isn't he?
00:10:32He's too stiff.
00:10:38Now he got him back and takes provisional pull from his teammate with a 120.0.
00:10:44He improved by four tenths over his first lap time.
00:10:48Good job for the minority drivers. We'll be back.
00:10:52Welcome back to qualifying for the Grand Prix of Monaco.
00:10:59Here on Speed Channel, I'm Bob Varsha with Steve Matchett and David Hobbs.
00:11:02This is Giorgio Pantano of Italy.
00:11:05Bright yellow Jordan Ford.
00:11:10Pantano did a 117.674 in his opening lap of qualifying.
00:11:15Giorgio Pantano did the Formula 3000 race here three times and crashed out of all of them, so...
00:11:25Better keep your eye on old Jordan.
00:11:27Ooh!
00:11:28Got a lot of push around Mirabeau.
00:11:30He's up seven tenths over the two minority drivers who have already qualified.
00:11:35And down along the famous harbor front, under the Grand Hotel.
00:11:45What is that blazing sunlight? I'm sure the drivers would like a little cloud cover.
00:11:53Going from the darkness to the light at 180 miles an hour plus.
00:11:57And you've got that right-hander and you have to get the braking right for the chicane.
00:12:01Yeah, it must be horrible, doesn't it?
00:12:07I mean, the tunnel is very well lit.
00:12:10But nevertheless, you're going from artificial light into that bright Côte d'Azur sunshine.
00:12:15It must make a huge difference.
00:12:17Nearly two seconds up on the Minardis at this point.
00:12:23Two and a half, 2.6.
00:12:25Let's start and finish.
00:12:26See, the trick really to get in the chassis to work around here.
00:12:31Well, let's have a look how Jordan are working on the car.
00:12:34It needs to be very compliant.
00:12:36And all four corners need to be very independent.
00:12:39So it prevents one of the wheels being lifted off.
00:12:42And that's just what we were seeing on the Minardi.
00:12:44They've got it too stiff at the front.
00:12:45Probably too stiff all around the chassis.
00:12:47But picking up a tire around here is no good at all.
00:12:51Giorgio Pantano improved over his first session time by just two tenths.
00:12:58Let's see what his teammate can do.
00:12:59This is Nick Heidfeld of Germany.
00:13:08Poor old Nick Heidfeld.
00:13:09Came in with such promise.
00:13:10Former 3000 champion.
00:13:12Snapped up by McLaren.
00:13:15Things just have not gone right for him since.
00:13:19Won the Formula 3000 race on these streets in 1998.
00:13:23He's up by two tenths.
00:13:24It's much talk that his team owner,
00:13:29the ever negotiable Eddie Jordan,
00:13:32is trying to get Heidfeld into one of the empty Williams seats for 2005.
00:13:38Of course, cynics suggest that's because Heidfeld doesn't bring any money to the Jordan team,
00:13:45the way Giorgio Pantano does.
00:13:51Well, I think there's a lot of truth in that, Bob.
00:13:53I mean, we all know Jordan has seemed permanently strapped for cash.
00:14:03Well, it would be nice to see Nick Heidfeld in a good car.
00:14:06The floor is too late.
00:14:09It's almost too late for him now.
00:14:11Right.
00:14:12You see how the front suspension on that Jordan's working in comparison to the...
00:14:17Minardi chassis.
00:14:1916,488 for Heidfeld.
00:14:22That's a half-second improvement over his first session time.
00:14:25And he moves in the provisional pole.
00:14:30Now, back the other way.
00:14:31There you go.
00:14:36This is the new section.
00:14:38Those grandstands on the left and the luxury boxes are all brand new.
00:14:42And we are told are going for about $600 a seat.
00:14:47This is young Christian Clean in the Jaguar.
00:14:58That is the new paint job advertising the Ocean's 12 movie.
00:15:02Right here on Thursday.
00:15:05He slammed into the guard rail.
00:15:06Deployed a bit of damage.
00:15:07They had a bad day on Thursday.
00:15:08Jaguars.
00:15:09One of them caught fire and two crashed.
00:15:11Other than that, it was a great day.
00:15:13Right.
00:15:14Yeah.
00:15:15Yeah.
00:15:16They are running a promotion with a jeweler named Steinmetz.
00:15:21And there are diamonds placed on the nose cones of these Jaguars.
00:15:30Jaguar team is opening a new wind tunnel.
00:15:32Working on a new wind tunnel in Britain.
00:15:34It will be their second.
00:15:35One of the team officials said, oh, you have to have two or three wind tunnels in Formula One just to keep up.
00:15:42Yeah.
00:15:43I'm not sure about that.
00:15:45You need one good one.
00:15:46That's for sure.
00:15:48One seventy seven point two.
00:15:51Quite a bit on Nick Heidfeld on that sector.
00:15:58Of course, considering the relative budgets, you'd expect it to be.
00:16:00All right.
00:16:01He did a one sixteen point three seven nine in the first session.
00:16:07And improves hugely here.
00:16:10Wow.
00:16:11It will be interesting to see if his teammate Mark Webber, who did a one sixteen one in the first session,
00:16:15can top that from the young Austrian.
00:16:23I like that paint scheme on the Jaguar.
00:16:25And it jumps out at you.
00:16:26Once you figure out that it's not a Ferrari coming at you.
00:16:36And past the harborside chicane, he goes.
00:16:40Now, if you like what you're watching as you see Mark Webber there, make sure you join us for the U.S. Grand Prix coming up June 20th at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
00:16:50To get your tickets, contact the Speedway ticket office at 1-800-822-INDY or check out their website at www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com.
00:16:59And like last year, with the purchase of a race day ticket, you'll be given access to walk the pit lane on Thursday morning and get up close to these fabulous cars.
00:17:08You might even run into our own Steve Matchett, who no doubt will be nosing around every garage at Indy.
00:17:15Oh, you can bet that.
00:17:16Accompanied by the members of his fan club, who we understand now have stickers and decals to go with their t-shirts and hats.
00:17:26It's a phenomenon.
00:17:27It's revolting.
00:17:28Magic mania.
00:17:29We'll be back.
00:17:30Welcome back to qualifying for the Grand Prix of Monaco as the world broadcast host reviews Christian Kleen's qualifying lap in the Jaguar.
00:17:51Kleen, currently the pole sitter at 115.919.
00:17:56Oh, watch it over here.
00:18:01Working very well.
00:18:04I was looking at it in the provisional qualifying session earlier on, and the front of the Jaguar chassis working very well over that chicane.
00:18:13It doesn't look bad over anything.
00:18:15Cool.
00:18:16His hands are pretty calm.
00:18:20Christian Kleen, the youngest driver out there.
00:18:24The lad's only 21.
00:18:25And there he is going through post-qualifying tech inspection.
00:18:34Be sure to join us tomorrow for live coverage of the Rolex sports car series from Mont Tremblant in Quebec, Canada.
00:18:40Lee Diffey and Dorsey Schrader will be with you at 11 a.m. Eastern, watching the sports cars tackle one of the most beautiful circuits anywhere.
00:18:46There have been three races and three different winners thus far in the season, so you never know who might take the checker.
00:18:51The Rolex sports car series, 11 a.m. Eastern tomorrow, live and only here on Speed.
00:18:56There's Christian Kleen about to run the media gauntlet.
00:19:01Or Gantlet as you Brits prefer to.
00:19:05There's Louise Goodman with ITV.
00:19:07Louise in her days as a PR spokesperson for Formula One teams.
00:19:12Now she's a big time TV star.
00:19:14Here comes Mark Webber.
00:19:18In the Aussie Hero.
00:19:21Caught fire on Thursday morning.
00:19:23Very early on in the session.
00:19:25Yeah, that was an oil fire, a hydraulics fire underneath the bodywork and a lot of black smoke coming out of that carton.
00:19:32They managed to save the engine.
00:19:33They had to change the oil coolers and I guess a lot of the wiring lumen hydraulic components.
00:19:37There it is.
00:19:38All of that black smoke.
00:19:39See, that's not what you would expect to see on an engine blower where you see a lot of blue and white smoke coming out the back.
00:19:45That's basically carbon fiber and electronics blazing away underneath the bodywork.
00:19:50Again, they managed to change the components and save the engine, but he had another fire this morning.
00:19:55Another under bodywork fire.
00:19:57Again, they managed to save the engine.
00:19:59Mark Webber, a guy on everybody's lips.
00:20:02Jaguar very anxious to keep him.
00:20:05His torque, he might go to Williams.
00:20:07And if I was him, I'd be thinking about Toyota.
00:20:11Car looked a bit steadier under braking into Grand Hotel hairpin than a lot of the cars we've seen.
00:20:16Another winner of the Formula 3000 race around these streets.
00:20:19Webber won in 2001.
00:20:21His remarks about his team, unless I'm reading too much into this, have taken on a much harsher tone recently.
00:20:29I'm wondering if Webber is not already packing his bags.
00:20:33His fellow Aussie, Alan Jones, a former world champion, said,
00:20:36Jaguar doesn't get their act together.
00:20:38I'd be out of there at 100 miles an hour.
00:20:40Yeah, well, I'm afraid.
00:20:42Wow, solid and clean through that sector.
00:20:47179 miles an hour for Webber.
00:20:49That puts him on par with Heidfeld going through the speed trap.
00:20:59He's qualified in the top ten at all but one race this year.
00:21:02There he is, back on his game.
00:21:03Good third sector.
00:21:041.15.7.
00:21:06About a four tenths improvement from his first session time.
00:21:09Because he qualified on the front row in Malaysia and just had an absolutely dismal day from then on.
00:21:15The thing got stuck in gear on there.
00:21:17Somewhere there with their gear selection.
00:21:20The stall control and it just went from bad to worse.
00:21:24And here's the man who's been quickest in every session so far except the first part of his qualifier.
00:21:32Paul in four out of the five races run this year.
00:21:35Winner of all five.
00:21:37And here he is going out seven in the Ferrari.
00:21:40And if he wants to make that six wins in a row, he's going to have to be in the top two rows at the very worst.
00:21:49Good start.
00:21:53Woo!
00:21:54Went in just a hair deep there.
00:21:57It's where he crashed out on the opening lap.
00:22:00A few years back.
00:22:01Look at that.
00:22:11Camera's obviously still in the tunnel.
00:22:12Oh, there it goes.
00:22:16183.6 miles an hour for the Ferrari.
00:22:18That's the practice time of the day through the speed trap.
00:22:23Ferrari making use of these brand new, very quick, apparently Bridgestone tyres.
00:22:28Bridgestone and Ferrari have been working on a Bridgestone tyre that will come straight up to temperature without having to wait for that one lap to get it up to working temperature.
00:22:37Let's see how he does.
00:22:38Well, this could be a big, big number.
00:22:41A 13, no, 14.5.
00:22:44A one and a half second improvement from his morning time.
00:22:47There it is.
00:22:48Ross Braun smiled.
00:22:49That's the grin right there.
00:22:50Hold that piece of video.
00:22:51You don't get a smile out of Ross Braun very often.
00:22:54But what an effort by Michael Schumacher.
00:22:56Now the question is, will it stand up?
00:22:59We'll find out.
00:23:00Cristiano D'Amata on track in the Toyota.
00:23:03Welcome back to qualifying for round six of the 2004 Formula One World Championship, the Grand Prix of Monaco.
00:23:13An event unlike any other in motorsports.
00:23:16I'm Bob Barsha with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett, Michael Schumacher and Ferrari on provisional pole at a one minute, 14.5 second lap.
00:23:24This is Cristiano D'Amata in the Toyota.
00:23:2814.5.
00:23:29Not as quick as his brother went in the first part of this qualifying session.
00:23:33Did a 14.48.
00:23:35But it's going to be pretty tough to beat that, depending, of course, what people have on board for fuel for tomorrow's race.
00:23:41Right.
00:23:46We're expecting this really to be a two stop race, I think.
00:23:54To overtake anybody here is very difficult.
00:23:56You remember just two or three years back when David Coulthard got stuck behind Enrique Bernaldi for like 44 laps or something.
00:24:03Some 32 laps.
00:24:05Tremendous amount of time.
00:24:07With a car that was about two seconds quicker in Guadalupe.
00:24:09Of course, one of the best races we've ever seen here was in 92 when Ayrton Senna got the jump on Nigel Mansell on the pit stops
00:24:16and held the far superior Williams behind him for about 20 laps to win the race.
00:24:23D'Amata, 1.6 seconds off of provisional pole.
00:24:27And a 1.16.1 is 4 tenths slower than he went in the first session.
00:24:32Yeah, that's disappointing for him then.
00:24:34Yeah, that race between Mansell and Senna.
00:24:36Of course, you've got to remember that Nigel Mansell was one of the great overtakers of all time.
00:24:40Oh, yeah.
00:24:41Having won the Hungarian Grand Prix from 1989 right back down the pit in the .12 position.
00:24:48I always think as well during that race that Nigel Mansell was doing a great job of showmanship.
00:24:53Getting so close to Ayrton Senna and putting on a show of not being able to get past him.
00:24:58What it was actually quite clearly would be unable to do so for about the last six laps.
00:25:03This is Felipe Massa in the Sauber Ferrari or Sauber Petronas, the rebadged Ferrari V10.
00:25:10Well, the Sauber's have gone very well here.
00:25:22His teammate Giancarlo Fisichella did a 14.8 in the first round.
00:25:28So let's have a look at Massa's speed track time.
00:25:33Fractionally down on his provisional qualifying run at 297.
00:25:38Identical speed track time to Michael Schumacher.
00:25:43Of course, these cars have got the same engines in, but...
00:25:46Sauber made it clear that they are not using what they call the Ferrari spec Bridgestone tyre.
00:25:54Now then, Steve, you're the technical expert.
00:25:59I think the sun has gone in.
00:26:01Cloud covers coming over and obviously the track temperature will change much quicker than the ambient as the sun goes off the black tarmac.
00:26:08What's that going to do to the runners later on?
00:26:11Well, it should, if anything, slow them down a little bit.
00:26:13I think they want this track as hot as possible.
00:26:15It's a very low grip track.
00:26:17Massa well off his... off his for a second time as well, as was Damato.
00:26:22The first two drivers not to improve over their first session time.
00:26:26Here comes the other Ferrari in the hands of Brazilian Rubens Barrichello.
00:26:30Has a birthday coming up on race day tomorrow.
00:26:33It'll be 32.
00:26:36It's really difficult this race, I think, to try and figure out what's going on with fuel loads during this qualifying session.
00:26:46Remember that the cars will have to start the race on the fuel they have in the cars right now during this qualifying session.
00:26:52If Ferrari are thinking they're going to be on the front row of the grid, their biggest concern is going to be what Renault are going to do, because they've been working very well as well.
00:26:59And if they have a tremendous start, as Renault has proved to have in the past, how much fuel will Ferrari risk putting in the car?
00:27:07More fuel in the car is going to slow the car down at the start.
00:27:10Ferrari are going to want to get a real good bolt shot to get away.
00:27:13And, of course, this is the team and driver who went with the two-stop strategy earlier this year.
00:27:19Sacrificed qualifying position for pit strategy.
00:27:23Yeah, and they made it work.
00:27:26Right.
00:27:27Slightly slower than Michael.
00:27:28Now, is that tyres, is that driver, or is that fuel load, or is it a little bit of each?
00:27:33I would suggest a little bit of each.
00:27:36I don't think you can afford to go for a one-stop strategy here.
00:27:41Just the starting load is...
00:27:43Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:27:44Oh, that'll cost him.
00:27:45A little bit too heavy.
00:27:47Not too heavy.
00:27:56Second.
00:27:5714-7.
00:28:00Now, of course, is that time going to hold up?
00:28:02Because, obviously, it's imperative for Rubens to be as close to front as he can.
00:28:05Currently line second in the World Championship, although he's a fair way behind his teammate.
00:28:09Six tenths improvement over his first session time.
00:28:12Here's a look at that bobble in Rescasse.
00:28:16He lost a bit there.
00:28:17I'd say he lost a couple of tenths there.
00:28:19Well, that could have been a couple of tenths right there.
00:28:21Used to be called the Rescasse Restaurant, right there on the corner.
00:28:25Now it's the Café Grand Prix.
00:28:28But the corner will forever be Rescasse.
00:28:31We'll be back in just a moment.
00:28:33Olivier Panis is up.
00:28:35Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by
00:28:42the United States Grand Prix.
00:28:43The United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis has a new date, June 20th, 2004.
00:28:48Tickets can be purchased online at IndianapolisMotorspeedway.com
00:28:53or by calling 800-822-NDY.
00:29:00Welcome back.
00:29:01We're in another break in the action here in qualifying at Monaco.
00:29:05Enjoying replays of Michael Schumacher's lap, courtesy of our World Feed partners.
00:29:11There is Olivier Panis in the second Toyota, making his way off the new pit lane and onto the street.
00:29:18He has an interesting history here, does the Frenchman.
00:29:22Let's take a look at his one and only Formula One victory, which came here in Monaco in 1996.
00:29:30There he is, nudging Eddie Irvine over at the Lowe's corner into the rail.
00:29:36And when leader Damon Hill's Renault engine-grenaded,
00:29:39second-place Jean Alessi had problems with his steering on the Benetton.
00:29:43Panis would take the victory in the Lige in a race that would set a record for the fewest number of cars running at the finish.
00:29:50Just three cars on track.
00:29:52But as you can see, to the crowd, it mattered not.
00:29:55Now, remember seeing members of the Lige team at the airport the next day,
00:29:59and they were just absolutely, I mean, they were beyond celebrating.
00:30:03It was like they were shocked, stunned.
00:30:05I think they were, because he qualified like 12th or something for that race, didn't he?
00:30:09Oh, my goodness.
00:30:10Way back.
00:30:11What a day.
00:30:12In fact, he's never qualified better than 12th here.
00:30:16Fantastic little video shot we had there of the cars back then.
00:30:19Amazing how much they've changed from then to now.
00:30:21Oh, yeah.
00:30:23There, it's a great shot.
00:30:24See the little wing adjuster on the flap there?
00:30:26Sometimes in the pit stops you see the mechanics put the speed brace onto that little bracket and wind it up or down.
00:30:32And that's what they'll do to change the front downforce on the car.
00:30:35Just trim the aerodynamics across the front wing.
00:30:38Rask gas.
00:30:39Rask gas.
00:30:47That's a neat little shot that.
00:30:48Yeah.
00:30:49Pretty cool.
00:30:58This is about the only place you really need power here to get up that hill.
00:31:03Yeah.
00:31:04Now, avoid that bump in the road.
00:31:11Ooh, a little bit light.
00:31:19I can remember the lady here saying he used to hold his breath on his qualifying lap around this place.
00:31:26I know the rest of us did.
00:31:27Most of us did.
00:31:32This is perhaps the ultimate test of driving precision and controlled aggression.
00:31:38There is nowhere to go off in Monaco.
00:31:41See this?
00:31:42Another way.
00:31:43179 and a half miles an hour.
00:31:46Through this feature.
00:31:47This could be a good time for Panis.
00:32:00He may get as high as third.
00:32:06Fourth.
00:32:08115.8.
00:32:09And that is 7 tenths slower than he ran in the morning session.
00:32:14So both of the Toyotas considerably slower than their first session time.
00:32:18Which takes us back to fuel loads once again.
00:32:20They must have put quite a bit of fuel in.
00:32:26Boy, that exit of that chicane looks tight to me, I tell you.
00:32:30See, all year long we've seen the cars running a three-stop strategy and coming in very early.
00:32:36I mean, much earlier than the mathematics would indicate.
00:32:39You know, lap eight, lap nine, lap ten.
00:32:42I think we could well see the same sort of thing again at the front.
00:32:46Runners trying to just get away very quick.
00:32:48And here is an absolute key player here.
00:32:51Last year's winner.
00:32:53From what, third or fourth on the grid?
00:32:55Made a good start and had a great run.
00:32:57Very quick around here.
00:33:01But of course, him and the team not exactly gelling this year.
00:33:04Because they all know he's going to McLaren next year.
00:33:10He's disappointed in the car.
00:33:12They're disappointed in him.
00:33:13They're all disappointed in Ralph Schumacher.
00:33:16No, one way or another, it's not a happy campus at the Didcot headquarters.
00:33:20A few minutes ago, we talked about the great 92 race in which Nigel Mansell's season opening run of five straight victories came to an end at the hands of the late Ayrton Senna.
00:33:40Monaco has often played a role like that in Formula One.
00:33:45It may end Michael Schumacher's run of five straight.
00:33:49That is yet to be determined.
00:33:50Big wiggle there by the way it's going in.
00:33:52Well, of course, they put a lot more break on the back here than they would normally have.
00:33:56And that's what's leading to some of this.
00:33:58You can see them unbreaking.
00:33:59They're looking very twitchy going to a lot of these corners, but five tenths slow is a lot.
00:34:0515.039.
00:34:06His first session time, 15.029.
00:34:10By 1.100, the defending champs slow.
00:34:12Look at those mirrors vibrate.
00:34:18Welcome back to qualifying around the scenic harbor at Monaco.
00:34:22Back in 1419, the Grimaldi family took the throne and they still hold it.
00:34:28And this, the world's second smallest sovereign nation behind only Vatican City in Rome.
00:34:34This is Yarno Trulli in the Renault.
00:34:37His first session time, a one minute 14.993.
00:34:43Led the Spanish Grand Prix after that dynamite start.
00:34:45Qualified in four.
00:34:47Been quick here all weekend.
00:34:48The Renault looking very good around here.
00:34:50Afterwards, he dedicated his performance in that race to his friend Dino,
00:34:55who turns out to be Dino Tosso,
00:34:57his former race engineer who now works in the aerodynamics department at Renault.
00:35:0135 years old, diagnosed with cancer.
00:35:05He was one tenth, just over one tenth of the second slower in that first sector.
00:35:10But this second sector is where he was very quick in this morning's first part of qualifying.
00:35:15180.3 for the Renault through the speed track.
00:35:26And again quick in that second sector.
00:35:29Yep.
00:35:31Green is good.
00:35:32Very low to the ground.
00:35:33He is slower than Michael Schumacher through the speed track, but nevertheless still finding the time around the track out of this car.
00:35:41Boy, this is going to be close.
00:35:4413.9.
00:35:46Wow!
00:35:47You've got right to do that, boys.
00:35:49Well done.
00:35:51Yes.
00:35:52Ferrari looking a little edgy.
00:35:53Wow!
00:35:54Was that?
00:35:55I bet they were.
00:35:56A what?
00:35:58That is the first time in the 13s.
00:36:01So they must be running very light then too.
00:36:03Well, it's possible they're running light.
00:36:05Remember this B-Spec engine that they introduced at Imola.
00:36:09It's apparently pulling great torque and horsepower from something like 2,500 RPM, which is going to give them great grunt out of these slow speed corners around here.
00:36:18A lump with grunt, as you would say.
00:36:20Absolutely.
00:36:212,500 up to 19,000 pulling.
00:36:25Think about that, yeah.
00:36:29There are a lot of motorcycles that don't do that.
00:36:34This is Takuma Sato, who is up on the provisional polter.
00:36:38Quicker in the first sector than Trulli.
00:36:40Now, he was quick in the first sector this morning, or just a couple of, you know, an hour ago, and lost out a lot of time on the second two sectors.
00:36:47Not a lot of time, but some time, so.
00:36:49Well, this engine too.
00:36:50Very different engine.
00:36:51That's coming up that hill, of course, but the Honda's probably got more power.
00:36:53I don't think it's got the torque of the Renault, but it's got huge horsepower, as you say, coming up that hill.
00:36:58Just keep it together.
00:36:59Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:37:00Yay!
00:37:01What were we saying?
00:37:02The words were not yet out of your mouth.
00:37:07181.7.
00:37:10This is a Monaco-spec Honda engine.
00:37:14Look at all the time he lost.
00:37:15That cost him dear, isn't it?
00:37:17Whoa.
00:37:18There's only other visit to this track in a Grand Prix car. He crashed in the Jordan.
00:37:24He's probably going to end up about fourth.
00:37:28Go on, sir.
00:37:29About fourth.
00:37:3014.8.
00:37:31It's the tenth better than he did in the first session.
00:37:33Jacques Clear with his hand on the monitor there.
00:37:38This is where it went wrong.
00:37:39Yeah.
00:37:40Yeah.
00:37:41That's a lot of time.
00:37:42Goat went down to Swanee there.
00:37:43Good job to save that, though.
00:37:46That's what caught him right there.
00:37:48Big weight transfers.
00:37:49He put that wheel up on the curb.
00:37:51Well, sorry, Takuma.
00:37:52I was going to blame that on you, but, well, I guess I can still blame it on you.
00:37:55Wow.
00:37:56I thought you just outbraked yourself.
00:37:57But he did do a good job in keeping it all together.
00:37:59I mean, and he didn't go cutting across the chicane, right?
00:38:01Right.
00:38:02What a shame.
00:38:03Young drivers, take note.
00:38:04There's a time to use the curbs.
00:38:06That was not one of them.
00:38:07That's not one of the curbs you want to be using.
00:38:09Well, you put it up there when you're trying to break it.
00:38:11It just puts a terrific amount of weight on that left front, suddenly.
00:38:14Now Alonso, er, has sort of been the man of the moment for last year.
00:38:20But truly is definitely coming back to his own with the Renault team.
00:38:24Can Alonso get onto that front row with his teammate?
00:38:28That would be a black eye for Ferrari.
00:38:31He's on it, right here.
00:38:39Remember that odd turn-in style we saw two weeks ago in Spain?
00:38:48Just cranking that wheel in.
00:38:50Yeah, and it seems to work for him now.
00:38:58I think it would give him all kinds of understeer.
00:39:09Man.
00:39:16Is he going to be ahead of Schumacher?
00:39:20I think he is going to be quicker than Schumacher.
00:39:22The Renaults are very good through this third sector.
00:39:25See if he can get to the front row.
00:39:30Yes, second at a 14-4.
00:39:32That shows you how fast Truly was.
00:39:34So for now, it's an all-Renault front row.
00:39:39What do you know?
00:39:40I don't think there's anybody left that's going to be able to shake them off though.
00:39:42I don't think Coulthard and Raikkonen can pull it off.
00:39:45They might be able to do it.
00:39:46Of course, Ralph Schumacher might be able to, but he is going to get docked ten positions.
00:39:51Oh!
00:39:52Boy, using all of that curb and sidewalk.
00:39:55And most of the front hall closet of the guy who lives on that corner.
00:39:59Alonso, to borrow a dirt track expression, elbows up all the way around.
00:40:03Currently, P2.
00:40:17Welcome back to qualifying.
00:40:18The BAR Honda team looks on.
00:40:22Their man, Takuma Sato, currently fifth.
00:40:24These boys from Renault have their drivers across the front row for the Grand Prix of Monaco.
00:40:30Let's ride along.
00:40:31This is Yarno Tule.
00:40:32This is Yarno Tule.
00:40:33This is Yarno Tule.
00:40:34The recognise.
00:40:35The line Hin rich and rude.
00:40:36This is Yarno Tule.
00:40:37However, starting with Teyep 8 Pierre Dech marshmallow there's somebody from Jordan.
00:40:40It's great, 有ido, my husband came back here.
00:40:41They're almost blessed to have the night turn and he's known all the way around...
00:40:42It's sexy band Zhang之前 trying to görse.
00:40:44Oh!
00:40:45It's jumpin' here.
00:40:46It's some aggressive bandit.
00:40:48It's a perfect bandit.
00:40:50Aצם Builder.
00:40:51It's old and beautiful bandit.
00:40:53You know I aman, I luok!
00:40:55Julia.
00:40:56Visit usrut to Marquez.
00:40:57That was the end of what is, for the moment, the provisional pole lap.
00:41:20Did you notice he used five different gears from the beginning to the end of the swimming pool chicane?
00:41:25Up and down, yeah. Even just going down to the Grand Hotel hairpin and make three gears, just from Mirabeau to the Grand Hotel, then back down again.
00:41:32Well, be sure to join us tomorrow morning from live coverage of the Grand Prix of Monaco, beginning at 7.30 a.m. Eastern with the Acura Pre-Race Show.
00:41:39Peter Windsor will take you around the new pit complex, and of course, he'll be doing the interviewing at the end of the day.
00:41:46Again, that's Sunday morning, 7.30 Eastern, live, and only here on speed. However, the race is subject to blackout.
00:41:55This is Giancarlo Fisichella. Fifth quick in the first round of single lap qualifying.
00:42:03You see the ambient temperature has come up one degree C. The track temperature up a little bit as well.
00:42:08It's about 72, 73 degrees here in Monaco.
00:42:12The courtier on his warm-up.
00:42:25C. The 14-8 this morning, 14-8-1-4.
00:42:30Looking very good, he was.
00:42:33Ian Alonso were just two thousandths of a second apart in their first one lap.
00:42:37If he can nip Alonso again, he'll reach the front row.
00:42:53Back in 1965, Jim Clark skipped the Grand Prix of Monaco in favor of running in and winning the Indianapolis 500,
00:43:02leading 190 of the 200 laps.
00:43:05He came back and won the next four Grand Prix, five wins from five races,
00:43:10and led every lap of each of those five races.
00:43:14So if you think Michael Schumacher is dominating right now,
00:43:18check out the stats for Jim Clark and Lotus in 65.
00:43:20Fisicuolo qualified for a fourth here in 97 and third in 1998.
00:43:42Since then, things haven't looked quite so good.
00:43:46Finished third here in 2000.
00:43:49Back in 1994, the support race here was a Formula 3 affair rather than Formula 3000.
00:43:57Giancarlo Fisicchelo won it.
00:44:02181.2 miles an hour.
00:44:04The thrower engine sound between the speed truck.
00:44:06And there it is for Fisicchelo.
00:44:19And there it is for Fisicchelo.
00:44:31Well, they seem, Salva seemed very happy with that result.
00:44:42I wonder how much fuel these guys are carrying on board.
00:44:44Remember, Fisicchelo, there we go.
00:44:47Look at that.
00:44:47They're not, they're not displeased with that time.
00:44:49I'm suggesting that these guys are running a lot of fuel on board.
00:44:52Yeah, that was a half second slower than he did in the first run.
00:44:55Now, Jensen's butt on the floor.
00:44:58We did not.
00:44:58Two races ago, led for a few laps, before the first pit stop.
00:45:05Crashed out of this race in practice last year.
00:45:09Suffered a concussion, was not allowed to race.
00:45:11Button up on P1.
00:45:23We expect this chassis and driver combination to do very well round here.
00:45:27We saw Sato nearly pull off a terrific lap if he hadn't lost it at the exit of the tunnel.
00:45:33Let's see what his teammate does, Jensen Button.
00:45:35If you remember, Sato's first sector was very quick, he lost, because he lost a hell of a lot right here, but.
00:45:41182.1.
00:45:44Great camera shot there of the tyre.
00:45:46I hope we see some of that during the race.
00:45:47Up close and first on that tyre.
00:45:51I'm not a fan of it, though.
00:45:53Just a bit down.
00:46:00This could get him on the second row.
00:46:02Tough to outdo the Renaults in that third sector.
00:46:06Hugging the wall.
00:46:08Come on.
00:46:10Second.
00:46:10Second.
00:46:11Good.
00:46:12But a 14-3, still four-tenths away from Yarno Trulli.
00:46:17So a great effort by Jensen Button in his first visit in two years to this circuit.
00:46:24We'll be right back from Monaco.
00:46:27Back, the Ferrari mechanics looking on.
00:46:30Michael Schumacher currently fourth.
00:46:32Rubens Badakello fifth.
00:46:33But this man, David Coulthard, based on his first session time, is very capable of bumping them a spot in the McLaren Mercedes.
00:46:42Now this chassis, unlike the Jaguar, and certainly unlike the Renault, just doesn't look as comfortable going over the kerbs here.
00:46:53And that key section of track to look at how that suspension is working is that nouvelle chicane at the exit of the tunnel.
00:46:59David Coulthard over his career.
00:47:03He's qualified third here three times, second once, and second twice, and pole once.
00:47:08So, obviously, you can't count David Coulthard out of the good qualifying.
00:47:13He's also won the race twice.
00:47:17This McLaren is coming on, and we're hearing that their totally revised chassis could be on track testing in the next two weeks.
00:47:26It just sort of bounces, it just launches itself across the kerbs.
00:47:34There's no finesse to that chassis across there.
00:47:36They had power steering problems on Thursday, power steering seal failure on the steering rack.
00:47:47And I wonder whether or not that was a result of just using the extra lock round here.
00:47:50The seal just started to rub on some slight draining on the shaft because of the extra movement it's been given.
00:47:58It just started to knit the inside of that O-ring.
00:48:00Boy, seventh, that'll be a big sigh of relief in the Ferrari camp there.
00:48:04That's Forklift.
00:48:05Good to see him again.
00:48:07The McLaren refueler.
00:48:09Oh, well.
00:48:11We like to have both wheels rotating if possible.
00:48:15But it was great exposure for McLaren.
00:48:17It was, yeah.
00:48:18The engineers like that sort of stuff.
00:48:20In fact, 2001 at this race was David Coulthard's last pole position.
00:48:31And here comes Kimi Raikkonen.
00:48:33Like his team, Raikkonen seems to be on the rebound.
00:48:37114.659 last time around.
00:48:40And keep in mind, Rolf Schumacher, the fast man in the first session,
00:48:44will not start from pole even if he goes 1,000 miles an hour
00:48:47because he changed engines on Thursday.
00:48:51Well, of course, at this stage, everybody in the Ferrari camp has got their fingers crossed.
00:48:54If he's just a tenth of a second quicker than Schumacher,
00:48:57Michael Schumacher, that is, it'll push Michael Schumacher down onto row three.
00:49:03Which will certainly make that six in a row kind of hard to achieve.
00:49:07Right.
00:49:07I have to guess something has gone seriously wrong with Ferrari's plan this weekend.
00:49:12Well, I was looking at that time from the morning session,
00:49:14and it was so slow relative to the other runners.
00:49:16It was like a second half off the pace,
00:49:19which just hated the whole half of this new Ferrari team.
00:49:23I wonder whether or not they were doing a very slow lap
00:49:25to try and get these new generation of Bridgestone tyres
00:49:29just rubbed in, scrubbed in, ready for this second qualifying session.
00:49:33That seemed to indicate that that was the case.
00:49:35Well, that time there would get him in front of Michael Schumacher.
00:49:39Let's see if he can...
00:49:40He may wind up splitting the Ferraris.
00:49:42He won't pop Michael, but he might pop Rubens.
00:49:45Six-tenths, fifth spot.
00:49:52He does it, splitting the Ferraris.
00:49:55And Yarno truly could be in line for pole here.
00:50:01In fact, he is on pole because, as I just finished saying,
00:50:04Ralph Schumacher cannot beat him.
00:50:06Mr. Director, could we please see Yarno truly on the Renault team?
00:50:13Well, let's see what Ralph can do.
00:50:19As David mentioned earlier, very much out of favor with his team.
00:50:30He did not test at Paul Ricard last week.
00:50:33He is not scheduled to test at the team's next test,
00:50:35which I believe is at Silverstone in England.
00:50:37And for a Williams driver to go two test weights without driving
00:50:41is very much out of the ordinary.
00:50:45Well, to beat Yarno truly on the pole,
00:50:47he's going to go half a second quicker than he went this morning.
00:50:49It's going to be a stretch.
00:50:50A little bit up there.
00:50:53Good first sector.
00:50:55I don't like this one engine.
00:50:55But the Honda were very quick on that first sector.
00:50:57So I think it's the power of the Honda and the BMWs
00:51:00which show you up on that hill.
00:51:02You know, this one engine rule where
00:51:04if you change the engine throughout the duration of the Grand Prix weekend,
00:51:07you're going to cross 10 places.
00:51:09I just don't like it.
00:51:10I think it takes away from the spectacle.
00:51:12And to me, it ain't what F1 is.
00:51:15And of course, it means quite frankly,
00:51:17you know, if you start in 10th position,
00:51:19if he gets the pole now and starts in 10th,
00:51:21I mean, he hasn't got a cat in hell's chance of winning this.
00:51:23No.
00:51:27And I understand Max Mosley is desperate
00:51:31to try and get the cost of Formula One down
00:51:33to entice new teams to take part in the sport,
00:51:35but...
00:51:37Well, it'll only be good for 10th place.
00:51:41But it's an exercise in statement making, if you will,
00:51:44for Ralph Schumacher.
00:51:46Second quick.
00:51:4836 hundredths of a second off of Yarno Trulli.
00:51:51But he will slot back in 10th,
00:51:53and there is the man with the headband.
00:51:55Yarno Trulli's first career pole,
00:51:58and it comes here at Monaco.
00:52:00And look at the reaction from Ferrari.
00:52:02Oh, dear, oh, dear.
00:52:05Well, at least they'll have Ralph Schumacher behind them
00:52:08as the Ferraris line up 5th and 7th on the grid.
00:52:13Now, the teams have to make their tire compound choice
00:52:17on Saturday morning.
00:52:19Look at Trulli.
00:52:21I imagine he'll have more to say about Dino Tosso.
00:52:24Well, that's a great result for driver and team
00:52:32and engine supplier, of course.
00:52:33Quite sure why he has that sort of poodle-like hairstyle.
00:52:37Odd-looking.
00:52:40Last time a Renault started from Paul,
00:52:42they won the race.
00:52:43That was Hungary last year in the hands of Fernando Alonso.
00:52:46Flavio Briatore embraces his band.
00:52:48It didn't take Flavio long to get in front of the cameras,
00:52:51did it?
00:52:51And his race engineer, Alan Permain,
00:52:54walks back into the garage to begin the procedure
00:52:56to get the car prepped.
00:52:59Ready for the race tomorrow.
00:53:00Well, he can't do much.
00:53:02It's all about looking at the telemetry data now off the car.
00:53:06And making a plan.
00:53:09And it's going to be a pretty simple plan.
00:53:11Get out first at turn one down at Sandovo.
00:53:15Get a couple of good pit stops.
00:53:17And according to the official statistics,
00:53:19the fastest team in the pit lane thus far this season
00:53:22has been Renault.
00:53:24So, here are the results.
00:53:28Great result for there.
00:53:29Ralph Schumacher, of course,
00:53:30don't forget, is going to lose 10 spots.
00:53:31So, he's going to be down in 12th.
00:53:32Jenson Button will assume that front row position.
00:53:35Alonso and Michael Schumacher.
00:53:37One second covering the top nine cars.
00:53:40A pole for Michelin.
00:53:42After much domination by Bridgestone
00:53:44and Michael Schumacher thus far this year.
00:53:47So, what do you do if you're a Ferrari?
00:53:49What is your plan for the race?
00:53:51And there is 11th through 20th
00:53:55with the minorities bringing up the rear
00:53:58following the Jordan teammates.
00:54:01Plenty more to come here from qualifying at Monaco
00:54:03including hearing from our first-time pole sitter,
00:54:06Yarno Trulli.
00:54:09Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship
00:54:13is brought to you by Circuit City.
00:54:15Circuit City.
00:54:16Check us out at circuitcity.com.
00:54:21Welcome back.
00:54:22While we await the press conference
00:54:24and first-time pole sitter, Yarno Trulli,
00:54:26let's enjoy his pole winning lap here at Monaco.
00:54:35Up to Massonet.
00:54:39Through the casino square.
00:54:42Lunging downhill, avoiding the bump on the left.
00:54:45See a lot of plank smoke being chucked up there.
00:54:47That was what made me think that they're running the car very low.
00:54:51See, not quite as quick on that first sector
00:54:53as the Ferrari or the two BAR cars
00:54:55or the BMW of Schumacher.
00:54:58It's just hadn't quite got the grunt up that hill.
00:55:01It's about 850 brake horsepower.
00:55:03So, I mean, they're about 70 brake horsepower down on the Honda.
00:55:06But it's got good torque.
00:55:07So, when you come to a situation like this,
00:55:09you can hear the thing pulling really well from low down.
00:55:12Watch this.
00:55:20Concrete wall on the left,
00:55:21arm toe on the right.
00:55:22Thread the needle at 170 or so.
00:55:25And the car just glides over to Kirby.
00:55:28Round rest gas.
00:55:30And again, that tool pulling you out of there
00:55:32and out of here.
00:55:33To the finish line.
00:55:41No doubt the high point of Yarno Krulli's long Formula One career.
00:55:45116 Grand Prix and counting.
00:55:49We'll take a break and return.
00:55:51As soon as the drivers make their way to the interview room,
00:55:53we'll have it for you.
00:55:54Stay with us.
00:55:55Welcome back to the Principality of Monaco.
00:56:10Bob Varsha, Steve at Matchett, and David Hobbs with you.
00:56:14Qualifying now complete for round six of the Formula One World Championship in 2004.
00:56:18And what a day it has been for Italian Yarno, Trulli, and Renault.
00:56:22Let's go to the interview room and our Peter Windsor.
00:56:26Grand Prix of Monaco congratulates the fastest three qualifiers.
00:56:30Third quickest for Lucky Strike, BAR Honda, Jenson Button.
00:56:33Second fastest for BMW Williams, Ralph Schumacher.
00:56:36And on the pole for the first time in his career for Renault, Yarno Trulli.
00:56:41Yarno, on the pole at Monaco.
00:56:43Those are the words.
00:56:44Let's hear your thoughts.
00:56:46Well, I'm pretty impressed about, first of all, my lap time
00:56:51because I couldn't believe I went under 14.
00:56:55And I must say that the car has worked pretty well
00:56:57because this morning I was suffering a little bit of understeering
00:57:01and then we cured it.
00:57:02And then I put in a very impressive lap.
00:57:05So in Monaco, being in pole, which I chased for so long time,
00:57:09you know, I'm so, so pleased.
00:57:11So, you know, I'm sure tomorrow is going to be a tough race,
00:57:14but for today at least I got a little satisfaction.
00:57:18You love this place.
00:57:19You were quick here right from the start of your career.
00:57:22You've been on the front row here before.
00:57:25Right.
00:57:25The only thing I missed here was the victory back in 96
00:57:29when I was racing in Formula 3 on pole
00:57:31and then I lost it during the race because I had a problem.
00:57:34But I've been always very competitive.
00:57:36But I must also prize all the job that my mechanics,
00:57:39the engineers and the whole Renault team has done
00:57:42during the last few weeks because they are trying to give us
00:57:45a better car with a better handling
00:57:47and definitely in Monaco this is what you need.
00:57:50Well, as you say, you were the only guy to get under the 1.14 barrier.
00:57:54Very, very quick too on sectors 2 and 3 of the lap.
00:57:56Talk us through a little bit of that lap.
00:57:58Let's say that I knew that we would have been really close to each other.
00:58:04So I had to take a lot of risks.
00:58:06It worked out pretty well.
00:58:07I knew that my worst sector was the first one.
00:58:10So I got it right at the first one and just fly for the second and the third.
00:58:14For whatever reason, I don't know why,
00:58:16but just flying in the third one and there is nothing special to do there.
00:58:20I'm just very quick.
00:58:21Whatever I do, I'm two, three tenths quicker than anyone else.
00:58:24So I just hope that tomorrow I can keep this pace for the race.
00:58:28It certainly looks spectacular.
00:58:29Congratulations.
00:58:30Ralph, congratulations to you two on the, well, in theory on the front row,
00:58:34but sadly you had that engine problem yesterday,
00:58:35so you're starting ten positions further back, I guess.
00:58:39Bittersweet day for you.
00:58:43Well, definitely.
00:58:44I mean, we made the best out of the car.
00:58:46Cars handling as expected or even better, let's say.
00:58:50I think it would have been definitely a competitive car for tomorrow,
00:58:53but certainly from where we have to start,
00:58:55it's going to be a bit difficult.
00:58:58But, you know, I mean, never mind.
00:59:00It's a team.
00:59:00Sometimes I do mistakes, as I have done many, many times before.
00:59:05And this time it was the engine, the weak part,
00:59:07so I don't really care.
00:59:08I mean, as long as we try and keep it up,
00:59:10it definitely looks better than it did in Barcelona,
00:59:12so it's going in the right direction.
00:59:14Can you confirm that you'll definitely start ten back
00:59:17or would you contemplate the back of the grid here, perhaps,
00:59:20given the congestion at the first corner?
00:59:23No, no, we'll start where we are.
00:59:25I qualify it, obviously, plus ten, yeah, in the grid.
00:59:28We're going to have to take a break right now.
00:59:33We'll be back with more following qualifying
00:59:35from the Grand Prix of Monaco.
00:59:37Stay with us.
00:59:41Welcome back.
00:59:42We apologize to you Jensen Button fans
00:59:44who didn't get to hear from your man
00:59:45in the post-qualifying interview room.
00:59:47We're having a few problems
00:59:49with our satellite connections to Europe.
00:59:52But right now, it's time for everyone's favorite segment,
00:59:55The Sounds of Speed.
01:00:25Oh, my God.
01:00:55Oh, my God.
01:01:25Oh, my God.
01:01:55Oh, my God.
01:02:25Oh, my God.
01:02:55Oh, my God.
01:03:25Oh, my God.
01:03:27Now, don't forget to join us tomorrow morning for live coverage of the Grand Prix of Monaco beginning at 7.30 a.m. Eastern with the accurate free race show, and the cars will roll off at 8 for the grandest Grand Prix of all.
01:03:39Let's take a look at some of the highlights from last year's race.
01:03:43Supermodel glamour is not common in motor racing, but it certainly is in Monaco.
01:03:47That's Heidi Klum.
01:03:48That's Heidi Klum.
01:03:49She and Flavia Briatore on the right just became parents.
01:03:51Jensen Button wasn't thinking about much after this heavy crash in Saturday practice.
01:03:56Jensen was able to show up the next day for the race, but the doctors diagnosed him with a concussion and held him out of the event.
01:04:04Ralph Schumacher started on pole.
01:04:05Ralph Schumacher started on pole.
01:04:06Ralph Schumacher started on pole.
01:04:07There's Kimi Raikkonen alongside him on the front row.
01:04:09Montoya made a demon start.
01:04:12There's one of the runners in the background, leading Montoya, slips to second ahead of Kimi.
01:04:19So that was a good start for Juan Pablo.
01:04:22Then it all went wrong for Heinz-Harald Frentz and then the C22 Sauber on lap one straight into the armchair and rip the corner off.
01:04:31Ralph would pit first on lap 21.
01:04:34While he was doing that, Montoya began to bang out some fast laps to try and get some track position for his pit stop.
01:04:41Here he comes for his stop and he was able to come out and retain the lead.
01:04:48Moore changed the position in the pits.
01:04:50Michael Schumacher came in from P5, but got out ahead of Jano Trulli and his brother to move from fifth into the final podium position.
01:04:57There he is just in front of his bro.
01:05:01No doubt gnashing his teeth.
01:05:02Ralph almost threw it away here, but just able to stay put, stay out of the arm, go, ooh, that's down at Rasgass.
01:05:08Ralph ended up fourth.
01:05:10More battles in the pits.
01:05:12David Coulthard and Jano Trulli pit at the same time.
01:05:14Trulli just getting out ahead and held on to sixth position.
01:05:18Great final stop for the Williams team to keep their man Juan Pablo out front.
01:05:23But when he came out from that stop, he had the McLaren of Kimi Raikkonen all over his gearbox.
01:05:28He'd spend the final 20 laps of the race trying to hold off the flying fin.
01:05:33And he was able to do it.
01:05:35Taking the checkered flag.
01:05:36First win for Williams at Monaco in 20 years.
01:05:39Montoya's first win since Monza in 2001.
01:05:42And he joined Graham Hill as the only man to win the Indianapolis 500 and the Grand Prix of Monaco.
01:05:50A great race and a great victory for Juan Pablo.
01:05:54We'll take a quick break and be back with more post-qualifying show from Monaco.
01:06:02Stand by.
01:06:04Welcome back.
01:06:08One final look at the harbour front at Monaco as qualifying is now complete.
01:06:12And here are the results brought to you by Circuit City.
01:06:14David?
01:06:15Well, Jano Trulli with his first pole position in the first guy under 14.
01:06:18One minute, 14 seconds around here.
01:06:20Ralph Schumacher qualified second.
01:06:21But that little chicklet means he's going to start 12th
01:06:23because he loses 10 positions for changing an engine on Thursday.
01:06:26Button in third there.
01:06:28Alonzo fourth.
01:06:29Michael Schumacher fifth.
01:06:30But, of course, they'll all move up into the second and third row.
01:06:33He should get out a good run there, so he'll be 10th.
01:06:37Mark Webber not having such a great run.
01:06:39And, of course, Baumgartner and Bruni ringing up the back there.
01:06:42And the two Jordans of Heidfeld and Pantano, two and a half seconds off the pace.
01:06:47And that'll do it for qualifying from Monaco, where Jano Trulli took his first career pole.
01:06:52Don't forget, tomorrow morning, live coverage of the Grand Prix begins at 7.30 a.m. Eastern
01:06:56with the Acura free race show.
01:06:58The cars roll off at 8 for the grandest Grand Prix of all, the Monaco Grand Prix.
01:07:03Until then, for David Hobbs and Steve...
