00:00The Unmistakable Profile of Schloss Nürburgr
00:28tells you instantly you are in the Eiffel Mountains of Western Germany
00:31where the old Nürburgr castle has presided over Grand Prix racing since 1930.
00:38Welcome to Friday practice for round seven of the Formula One World Championship for 2004
00:43here on Speed Channel, the European Grand Prix from the Nürburgring.
00:48Hello everybody, I'm Bob Varsha along with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:51There is Michael Schumacher strapping into the Ferrari with much to prove
00:55after crashing out of last Sunday's round six, the Monaco Grand Prix.
01:04There is Yarno Trulli, the winner of that race,
01:07who you can be sure has been walking about six inches off the ground ever since last Sunday,
01:13even though there were a spate of press reports in Europe last week
01:16to the effect that his team manager and personal manager, Flavio Briatore,
01:21said no, the victory in Monaco, the first of his career, does not guarantee truly a new contract for 2005.
01:28Well, it's a strange old world, that Formula One, and a tremendous amount of politicking goes on all the time.
01:37Timo Gluck, the test driver for Jordan, first car out on the track in his second session,
01:42sun shining brilliantly up in the Eiffel Mountains.
01:44It's a very attractive part of the world, but is subject to a bit of damp from time to time, to say the least.
01:51It's a cool day, ambient temperature about 60 degrees, track temperature about 25 degrees hotter than that.
02:00Timo Gluck, a man in the news this week, he apparently has first dibs on any race seat that opens up with the Jordan team
02:08because Dutchman Jasper Stoppen has decided not to test for this team as scheduled
02:13in anticipation of a possible drive with them.
02:16The reason being, Jasper Stoppen cannot fit into the race car,
02:22something one would think they would have considered at an earlier juncture in the whole process.
02:28The whole thing strikes me as a little bit odd, that Jasper Stoppen not being able to fit in the car.
02:32Of course, you have to be very comfortable, and the inside of these cockpit is terribly confined.
02:36And there are also regulation requirements between the roll hoops,
02:42the rear roll hoop and the front roll hoop in the dash, and his helmet.
02:46So you have to make sure the driver can get low enough to be legit in the car as well.
02:52Gluck continues on his way.
02:54There is Michael.
02:55Gluck hasn't spun yet, and with no disrespect to him, that's unusual if you take into account what happened in this morning's session.
03:03He's done three-quarters of a lap, too, already.
03:05Let's take a look at the highlights of this morning's opening practice.
03:08And shock of all shocks, Michael Schumacher set the early quick time in his Ferrari.
03:16Not to be outdone.
03:17Fernando Alonso comes down to the hairpin and loops around there.
03:21Very tight corner there, but some good overtaking opportunities.
03:25Giancarlo Fischichello, unfortunately, out of the car.
03:29You remember he ended upside down a couple of weeks ago at Monte Carlo.
03:32There's Ricciardo Zonda.
03:33He gets it wrong at the Coca-Cola curve.
03:35That's the last corner, about 70 miles an hour before we come onto the start-finish straight.
03:38And look at this.
03:39This is unusual.
03:40Michael Schumacher and Team Ferrari also getting it wrong.
03:44He would finish second quickest in that first session, but that's in the Mercedes Arena.
03:48The mechanics had a lot of work blowing the dust and sand away from the brakes and steering geometry on that car.
03:53Here's Kimi Raikkonen, who turned just four laps and set sixth quickest time in the session.
04:00One of the laps being completely toasted when he performed this pirouette at that same Mercedes Arena where Michael went off.
04:06And shortly after him, one of the Jordans and one of the Minardis did some twin spins.
04:11Fastest man of the day.
04:12One of the real revelations of this season, considering he only races on Fridays.
04:17Anthony Davidson, the D.A.R. Honda team.
04:19Quick man with a lap at 1 minute 29.447.
04:25He's been doing some great work, Bob, I have to say.
04:28Davidson.
04:29All those Friday drivers have been doing some superb stuff.
04:31But Davidson, like you say, absolutely remarkable.
04:33There's Ricciardo Zonda, who is the Friday test driver for the Toyota team.
04:38Toyota's shops about 90 minutes away in Cologne.
04:45Williams' team won Pablo Montoya there in 11th.
04:49A 1-2 for Williams in this race last year, so you figured they would go well.
04:53But that new twin-keeled car thus far hasn't shown much in this week in which the team's technical director, Patrick Head,
05:00has decided to step laterally in the company, away from the job of technical director,
05:06handing that over to Australian Sam Michael, whose star has definitely been on the rise on the technical side this year.
05:14The big changes at Williams.
05:16Anthony Davis now on the track.
05:17He has been quick all year.
05:22He's been an absolute star on these Fridays.
05:25And they keep talking about people like Ralph Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya moving around.
05:31And nobody's talking about Anthony Davidson, who's quickest already at a 1.30.9.
05:36Last year's pole, which is a record, is a 1.29.9.
05:39So these cars really get into grips early on with this track.
05:44Well, I'll tell you what, David, I absolutely agree with you.
05:46If I was Toyota and I was looking, you know, do I want to employ someone like Ralph Schumacher at $50 million a season
05:51or Anthony Davidson for probably about less than half of that amount?
05:56Boy, if you gave him a couple, he'd be up to about nine.
05:58I'll tell you, and all that money that you could throw into the wind tunnel
06:01and whatever else you need to do to get these cars working well at Toyota, that's what I would be doing.
06:05Well, the thing about a young driver like that is you could do such a great sort of incentive clause.
06:11You give him a base salary of a couple of million, and then you give him, you know, a big chunk of dough per point.
06:16Yeah.
06:17There is Michael.
06:18He just had a great look into the eyes of his teammate, Rubens Barichello, sitting in the garage.
06:24Much to prove this week.
06:26After crashing in the tunnel with Juan Pablo Montoya in the latest in a long series of comings together between those two drivers.
06:38And it was judged by the FIA personnel as to be just one of those racing incidents, which it probably was.
06:44But Michael Schumacher, definitely very aggressive in getting some heat into his tires
06:48on what he thought would be the final lap under the caution and behind the pace car.
06:52Now, Montoya perhaps a little bit too close behind him, and of course it all happened in the gloom of the tunnel
06:58where nobody saw it properly.
06:59And Michael Schumacher was angry enough that his helmet, you could hear his helmet banging around the back of the garage
07:07when he got back there.
07:10Montoya.
07:11Montoya initially apologized over the radio to the Ferrari team.
07:17But Simpson has taken a slightly more aggressive stance and say,
07:19well, the Pratt slowed up too slow, but too quick in the tunnel.
07:23Well, David Coulthard on a quick lap.
07:25He set the fastest time of the session through the first sector.
07:28He's third overall right now, but he chooses not to complete
07:31what looked like it was going to be a pretty good lap.
07:35Ah, playing his cards close to his chest, that boy.
07:38Oh, yeah, McLaren's been doing a lot of that.
07:40Yeah, well, trying to hide there.
07:43Yeah, trying to hide something, right?
07:46Anthony Davidson, once again, quickest in the session thus far.
07:491 minute 30.905.
07:58And Michael, nope, 4 tenths off of that.
08:01All of the teams happy, if you believe them,
08:05to be back on a proper racing circuit
08:07where they can use the techniques that they know so well
08:11after being at Monaco barely five days ago.
08:15Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship
08:19is brought to you by BMW.
08:21BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
08:29Welcome back.
08:30This is the end of a spin by Christian Kleen,
08:33who has thoroughly beached his Jaguar
08:35and is therefore done for the day.
08:38He can head back to Monaco
08:39to look for that quarter million dollar diamond
08:41that came off the nose cone of his car
08:43when he ran into one of the Jordans
08:44on the opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix.
08:47Let's see what happened to Kleen.
08:48Boy, I mean, that is what they call,
08:51it's a technical term for it,
08:52it's called a brake locker.
08:54But, I mean, he's just,
08:56he must have been going about 100 miles out too fast,
08:59didn't he?
08:59Yeah.
09:00I mean, not even close.
09:02Right across all that paved runoff area,
09:04which even that didn't slow down enough
09:06and then, of course, gets it beached.
09:08In dust gravel.
09:09In his defence, I have to say,
09:11once these cars start to go
09:13and you get that pendulum effect,
09:14once the back end starts to come around,
09:15the adhesion's gone.
09:16Oh, what a great shot of the plank right there.
09:18That was the FAA legality plank.
09:20Well, they wanted to do that for you, Steve,
09:22so you could...
09:22I love all that sort of stuff.
09:23We should see more of those shots,
09:25Mr. Director, if we can.
09:27That FAA legality plank is 10 millimeters thick,
09:30which is about three-eighths of an inch in U.S. money.
09:34And the idea of that is to...
09:35Oh, well done.
09:36Let's have another shot of this,
09:37if we can lift it up.
09:38The idea of that plank is to lift the ride height up
09:42so that the teams have to,
09:44are forced to lift the ride height of the cars,
09:46and that destroys some of the efficiency
09:48of the air flowing underneath the car.
09:50To go back to your point that you start to make,
09:52which is even more key,
09:54is what you were saying about
09:55when the car spins around
09:56and starts to go backwards,
09:57of course, the aerodynamics work backwards
09:58and your downforce definitely diminishes seriously,
10:03i.e. disappears completely and you get lift.
10:06At the end of the straightway,
10:08McLean got it all wrong.
10:10It's about 184 miles an hour.
10:11It's one of the fastest parts of the track.
10:13And you're right, the car's producing close on.
10:162,000 kilos of downforce,
10:18so about 4,000 pounds of pressure
10:20forcing the car into the track.
10:22And as you say, David,
10:23as soon as the car spins around,
10:24you lose all that aerodynamic efficiency
10:26and the car is just gone.
10:27It's like skating our eyes.
10:30Anthony Davidson remains the fast man in the session
10:32as Takuma Sato comes around.
10:34He, too, with something to prove
10:35after his Honda engine let go
10:37on lap five
10:38and caused so much calamity
10:40five days ago in Monaco.
10:42Now, of course,
10:42we need to quantify these days of practice.
10:48You don't know what these guys are doing.
10:49You know, these times are all over the shop.
10:51There's Davidson quickest,
10:52Sato a second and a half slower.
10:54And, of course,
10:55they're doing all sorts of data input today.
10:58Tire runs, fuel runs,
10:59and moving the ballast up and down on the car.
11:02So you don't know where anybody really is
11:05on these Friday days
11:06until the end of, well,
11:08really tomorrow morning
11:09when they have practice
11:10before the qualifying
11:11when they start setting the car up
11:13for qualifying itself.
11:14It's interesting.
11:17They're calling this Fernando Alonso,
11:19but it's
11:19Yarno Trulli
11:21who typically carries that red
11:23on the onboard camera
11:26above the air intake
11:27for the engine
11:28and the roll hoop.
11:29So unless Renault has done something
11:31in terms of switching drivers to cars.
11:34Conspiracy theorists at work
11:36on Rubens Barrichello
11:37saying that Michael Schumacher
11:39is shutting him out this year
11:40because he went so quick
11:41at the end of last year,
11:42which, of course, to my mind
11:43is probably a load of old Codswallop.
11:45But, and, of course,
11:46Rubens Barrichello
11:47was convinced
11:48that something was broken
11:49in his car
11:50at Monte Carlo last week
11:51even though he finished third.
11:53And on the podium,
11:54Ross Braun said
11:54there was nothing wrong with the car.
11:56Maybe the tire pressures
11:57were a bit low.
12:00Things were a little quiet
12:01in the Ferrari garage this weekend
12:03following the news
12:04that Fiat chairman
12:04Umberto Agnelli,
12:06younger brother
12:07of former chairman
12:08the late Gianni Agnelli
12:10who just died
12:11in January of last year.
12:13Umberto Agnelli
12:14passed away on Thursday
12:16at the age of 69
12:18due to cancer.
12:19So in successive years,
12:21the Fiat empire
12:22has lost
12:23both of the Agnelli brothers.
12:26While we have a moment,
12:27why don't we take a look
12:28at our, oops,
12:29Tacumasado
12:30in the Mercedes Arena
12:32where so many cars
12:33have spun off.
12:34Does a neat job
12:35of getting it back on track.
12:36At least he stayed
12:38on the track
12:39that's available there.
12:39A lot of other people
12:40have been cutting
12:40over the grass today
12:41which seems a bit
12:42of a ridiculous thing
12:43to do when you
12:43have the curbing.
12:44When you've got some
12:45pavement to go on,
12:47why not use it?
12:49They're all doing that
12:50on that curb.
12:51That curb has a funny
12:52round shoulder
12:53at the back of it
12:54and I think the wheels
12:55get on top of the curb,
12:56slide over the back.
12:58Well, that slid
12:59right over the back.
12:59Yeah, I think he just
13:00drove over.
13:01He's going there
13:02a little bit too quickly.
13:03It seems to me
13:03that it's the apex
13:04of the curb earlier on
13:06that starts to
13:06unsettle the cars
13:07and then they're
13:08sort of constantly
13:08trying to fight it back
13:09and then, as you say,
13:11put a wheel
13:12the other side
13:12of the curb in
13:13and away it goes.
13:17Ross Peron
13:18at the back.
13:22Mark Webber
13:22has left up
13:23to second
13:24in the Jaguar
13:25at 1 minute 31.082.
13:27There is Mark.
13:29He'll take a break
13:29and return
13:30with more
13:30from practice
13:31at the Nürburgring.
13:45Welcome back
13:45to Friday's
13:46second free practice
13:47at the Nürburgring
13:49at the European Grand Prix.
13:51Traveling title
13:52for one more race
13:53on the Formula One calendar
13:55that has nestled here
13:56in the Eiffel Mountains
13:57of Western Germany now
13:58for many years.
14:00It's one of the
14:01Minardis.
14:03Jimmy Bruni
14:04who is in
14:0719th place
14:08from 24th
14:09and here is
14:10Yarno Trulli.
14:11I want to thank
14:12all of you
14:12sharp-eared
14:13listeners and viewers
14:15from Monaco
14:16last week
14:16who emailed
14:17this week
14:17to point out
14:18to me
14:18that
14:19Yarno Saarinen
14:20the motorcycle
14:21world champion
14:22in the 250 class
14:24for whom
14:24Yarno Trulli
14:25is named
14:25was a Finn
14:26and not
14:27a Swede.
14:28Thank you
14:29for that.
14:31While we have a moment
14:32let's take a look
14:32at the Porsche
14:33track map.
14:34David
14:34give us your thoughts.
14:36Well
14:36the old Nürburgring
14:38it ain't
14:39but it is quite challenging
14:40still a lot of
14:41elevation change
14:42down
14:42front straight there
14:45into the Castell S
14:46very tight
14:47good overtaking opportunity
14:48the Mercedes Arena
14:49has caught a lot of
14:50people out today
14:51and it's downhill
14:52from 4 all the way
14:53through 5 and 6
14:54right down to 8
14:56the Dunlop Curve
14:57which is an important
14:57corner
14:57180 degrees
14:58as you can see
14:59and then it's a long
15:00pull uphill
15:01so you really want
15:02to come out of 8
15:02with some good speed
15:04on board
15:04with the Michelin Curve
15:05which is a very fast
15:06left-hander
15:07the Bit Curve
15:08is a very fast
15:09right-hander
15:09and as you can see
15:11the old
15:11Hansenbach
15:12Bogan corner
15:13also very quick
15:14about 190 mile an hour
15:16into 14
15:16the NGK Chicane
15:18which is very tight
15:20then there's the
15:21Coca-Cola Curve
15:22the last corner
15:22which is a long
15:23you need a lot of
15:24grip through there
15:24you need a lot of
15:25grip everywhere
15:25here
15:26here's that first
15:27corner
15:27the S-curve
15:28that's Felipe Massa
15:30going wide there
15:31we saw Alonso
15:32spin there earlier
15:32today
15:33we saw Montoya
15:35and David Coulthard
15:36tangle there
15:37a couple of years
15:37back
15:38it's
15:40it's narrow
15:42right across
15:43the apex
15:43but it is a good
15:45opportunity for
15:46overtaking
15:46you have to be sure
15:48you get back on
15:48the gas
15:49so you don't get
15:49repassed
15:50absolutely
15:50and of course
15:52it does tempt you
15:53because it's such
15:53a wide approach
15:54there's that
15:56the NGK Chicane
15:58defending race champion
16:00Ralph Schumacher
16:01we're also hearing
16:07from the
16:08Williams camp
16:09that in their new
16:09wind tunnel
16:10that they've just
16:11opened up at Grove
16:12they have an
16:1380% model
16:15of a single
16:16keel car
16:17being put in
16:18that wind tunnel
16:18which is kind of
16:19indicative to me
16:20that
16:20this whole
16:21twin keel concept
16:22that
16:23Williams
16:24BMW
16:24been working
16:25on
16:25this year
16:26this car
16:27right here
16:27the FW26
16:28just ain't
16:29doing the business
16:30and with Sam
16:31Michael being
16:31promoted to
16:32technical director
16:33of that team
16:33I wouldn't be at
16:34all surprised
16:35to see Williams
16:36revert back
16:36to a single
16:37keel chassis
16:38last year
16:39remember
16:39the two big
16:39teams that
16:40are running
16:40this twin keel
16:41open front
16:42section on
16:42the car
16:43McLaren
16:43and Williams
16:44really is a
16:45challenge
16:45as a response
16:46to the dominance
16:47of the Ferrari
16:48car
16:48but remember
16:49the Ferrari
16:49chassis
16:50big luck
16:51up there
16:51from Ralph
16:52and that
16:52FW26
16:53the Ferrari
16:54chassis
16:54is a single
16:55keel car
16:56and these
16:56guys have
16:57just not
16:57been able
16:58to get
16:58the performance
16:59out of this
16:59well of course
16:59they're also
17:00coming under
17:00tremendous
17:01pressure
17:01from their
17:02engine supplier
17:03BMW
17:03who really
17:04want to see
17:05that they're
17:06putting a lot
17:06of the blame
17:06of this year's
17:07performance
17:08onto the car
17:10not their
17:10engine
17:11and Jordan
17:12getting it
17:12all out of
17:13shape
17:13that's a
17:15double up
17:15curve
17:15at the bottom
17:16of the hill
17:16there
17:16look at the
17:17camber on
17:17the track
17:17I never realised
17:18it was that
17:19acute
17:20bit of a
17:21bowl
17:21yeah
17:22yeah it's a
17:23pretty quick
17:24corner
17:24because as you
17:25come down
17:26to it
17:26it has
17:26got some
17:27back to it
17:27so you
17:27can whistle
17:28around there
17:28a lot quicker
17:29than it looks
17:29there's a
17:31couple of
17:33twin keel
17:34cars there
17:34twin keel
17:35of course
17:35refers to
17:36the method
17:36of attaching
17:36the front
17:37suspension
17:37on two
17:39spars
17:39splayed out
17:40to either
17:41side
17:41as opposed
17:41to one
17:42in the
17:42middle
17:43getting the
17:44one out
17:44of the
17:44middle
17:45obviously
17:45means you
17:46get good
17:46clean
17:46airflow
17:49exactly
17:51yeah
17:51it creates
17:52a kind
17:52of inverted
17:53U section
17:54underneath
17:54the car
17:54basically
17:55a tunnel
17:55yeah
17:56you raise
17:57a good
17:57point though
17:58about the
17:58Williams team
17:59though
17:59the stars
18:00seem to be
18:00coming into
18:01alignment
18:01you heard
18:02about a new
18:02single keel
18:03chassis
18:03in the tunnel
18:04the technical
18:05director
18:05Patrick Head
18:06decides to
18:07step aside
18:07I saw a
18:08comment from
18:08Antonia Terci
18:09the female
18:10aerodynamicist
18:11with the team
18:11saying the
18:12new Williams
18:13wind tunnel
18:13which has just
18:14come online
18:15is some
18:1530%
18:17more accurate
18:18than their
18:18old one
18:19which of course
18:19leads everyone
18:20to think
18:21well of course
18:22then they had
18:22problems with
18:23that twin keel
18:24design
18:24the old
18:24wind tunnel
18:25wasn't any
18:25damn good
18:26right
18:26keep me right
18:27then cranking
18:29up a pretty
18:29hot lap
18:30here
18:30last year's
18:31pole sit
18:31up at a
18:321.31.5
18:34going to be
18:35way under
18:35that this
18:36year
18:36another
18:37track where
18:38the speeds
18:39have gone
18:39leaping up
18:40just like
18:41Monte Carlo
18:42last weekend
18:42obviously all
18:45down to the
18:45tire war
18:46which Max
18:47Mosley of
18:47the FIA
18:48is trying
18:49to fix
18:50by having
18:51a control
18:51tire on
18:52his cars
18:52and no
18:53tire competition
18:53with the
18:57end result
18:57trying to
18:58save money
18:58but
18:59almost a
19:01shame to
19:01take away
19:02that tire
19:02competition
19:03Michael
19:04Schumacher
19:04quickest
19:05through the
19:05second sector
19:06he goes to
19:07P1 but he
19:08still hasn't
19:09gotten to
19:10the third
19:11place time
19:12and here's
19:12Kimi Räikkönen
19:13who could
19:13well
19:13displace him
19:14and so he
19:15does
19:15but we are
19:17still not
19:17in the
19:18129s
19:19Davidson
19:19Michael
19:19Schumacher
19:20and Rubens
19:20Marichello
19:21all went
19:22below
19:22130
19:23just well
19:24less than
19:25two hours
19:25ago
19:26so while
19:32Kimi Räikkönen
19:32last year's
19:33pole sitter
19:33continues on
19:34his way
19:35we'll take
19:35another break
19:36and return
19:36with more
19:37live coverage
19:38of free
19:38practice
19:39from the

19:49with you
19:50for practice
19:51for this
19:52weekend's
19:52European
19:52Grand Prix
19:53which will be
19:54seen live
19:54here on
19:55Speed Channel
19:55while we
19:56were away
19:57David
19:57Kulthar
19:58jumped from
19:588th to
19:593rd for
20:00McLaren
20:00and I was
20:03wondering
20:03we talked
20:03a moment
20:03ago about
20:04Williams
20:04possibly
20:05changing
20:05to a
20:06single
20:06keel
20:06front suspension
20:07setup
20:08I wonder
20:08if the
20:09new
20:09McLaren
20:10MP19B
20:11that's
20:11supposed to
20:12be on
20:12track
20:12very shortly
20:13will abandon
20:13their
20:14twin keel
20:14and go
20:14to a
20:15single
20:15if I was
20:18to have
20:18a guess
20:18Bob
20:18I would
20:19say no
20:19because I
20:20think they're
20:20kind of
20:20committed to
20:21this twin
20:21keel
20:22concept
20:22at the
20:22moment
20:23I think
20:23they'd
20:23have to
20:23completely
20:24ditch
20:25what has
20:25gone
20:25before
20:26and
20:29really
20:29as
20:30Bosling
20:30is
20:30in
20:30the
20:31Minardi
20:32well look
20:33at
20:33that's
20:33going
20:33to
20:33be
20:34very
20:34flat
20:35spotted
20:35get off
20:36the
20:36brakes
20:36on
20:36McLaren
20:41are kind
20:41of
20:41indicating
20:42that
20:42this
20:42I hasten
20:44to say
20:44new
20:44because
20:44they
20:45don't
20:45want
20:45really
20:45they
20:46don't
20:46want
20:46to

20:46the

41:42Michael Schumacher, I don't think, is on the track at the moment.
41:45We've seen them doing a lot of work on Schumacher's car inside the Ferrari pits.
41:49The car was in the air, there was mechanics working underneath.
41:52They also have the ride height gauges on the car for adjusting the ride height to the car and controlling the spring,
41:57so a lot of work been going off on Schumacher's car.
42:01Yeah, I'm wondering what's going on. He's only turned nine laps.
42:04He's currently ninth, and of the top 14 cars on the timesheets, the only one not on track is Michael.
42:09It's unusual to see the mechanics lift the car up in the air these days during these practice sessions.
42:15Probably a transmission problem or something of that nature that they've had to take the undertray and the floor off.
42:21I wouldn't think they'd be doing that to change the plank on the car, that FIA legality plank we're talking about.
42:25So I imagine there's more to that story than just technical changes on the car for ride height and suspension.
42:33CINFISI-KELA
42:39When Pablo Matoia appears to be done for the day, talking to Frank Derny, the gentleman with the glasses with his back to you.
42:47He doesn't look very happy, does he? Sort of saying the car is whatever they say in Columbus.
42:53Appears to have questions.
42:54Well, I think that's a good thing.
42:57To be honest, if the driver's not happy with the car, it means we can make the car go quicker.
43:02You know, if a driver gets out of the car and says, that's as fast as I can get it to go, guys, just polish it and leave it.
43:07I'm kind of stumped of what to do to make inroads on the competition.
43:10I like the driver to be unhappy with the car.
43:13I don't want him to be moaning about the car.
43:16Unnecessarily, but suggestions.
43:18Right.
43:18Here's what it's doing.
43:21I don't know, some of those suggestions you don't want to hear.
43:23See this car?
43:25See that dark hole over there?
43:31Takumasato, currently 14th.
43:36So he'll move up.
43:38Certainly not to P1, but should be in the top 10.
43:43So I'm scanning the first and second sector times.
43:46Nobody on a significant lap right now.
43:48We've got six people, of course, now under in the 29s.
43:53To expand on that, I thought about the driver should be constantly complaining about the car.
43:59What happens is, you make adjustments on the car and the car goes quicker.
44:03One certain section of the car and the track work well together, but that just then highlights a problem at another corner,
44:09whether it's the apex or the exit of corner two, for example.
44:12So you start to work on the car to make it quicker through that, and that highlights a problem further around the track again.
44:16And as with everything in Formula One Motorsport, and motorsport in general, it's a compromise at the end of day, the setup.
44:22But you must keep working to make sure the car goes quicker throughout the session.
44:29Jörn Vertheim, last year's Formula 3000 champion.
44:33Coming to the end of his weekend, just two minutes to go before his weekend is done,
44:39and all the test drivers, Davison, Zonta, Vertheim, Glot, services will no longer be required tomorrow.
44:46Their testing is done today.
44:48Don't forget Baselienders.
44:50He's probably out the back being pummeled by the fans right now.
44:54No more quick laps going on right now.
45:24Here's a replay of Timo Glock.
45:27Boy, we've seen him do that a lot of times today.
45:30And did you see the flash of titanium sparks or tungsten sparks underneath the car as well?
45:34Once that weight transfer shifts forward, you start to wear the planks down as well.
45:40Barrichello torturing another right front Bridgestone.
45:44Does he take it off?
45:47Ribbon's Barrichello got 22 laps under his belt.
45:50Currently lying sixth with a 29-9.
45:55It would be a fair question to suggest, you know, what does it matter if you wear that plank down?
45:59We're talking about the legality plank.
46:00Why are we so concerned about the sparks and the smoke coming out from underneath it?
46:04Well, we know that the teams want to run the car as low as possible,
46:07but as you say, it's an FIA requirement to be there.
46:10And if you do wear more than one millimetre off that plank throughout the duration of the race,
46:16you're at risk of being excluded from running the car too low.
46:19So you have to monitor the right height very carefully and get that fine razor's edge of where the plank is just touching the track,
46:26but not sufficiently to wear it down to be thrown out of the race.
46:29As we saw that cheating team in 1994 when they wore the plank down.
46:33Who was it?
46:34So as we look at David Coulthard in the McLaren.
46:36Oh, I was just thinking now.
46:40The Benetton team knows all about what can happen if you wear more than that one millimetre off that piece.
46:46It's a wooden product called Jab Rock.
46:49It's like, it's a marine plot.
46:51Right, it's a concoction of wood and resins and glue and thing.
46:57It's about the only wood you'll find in the pit lane.
46:59Healing body parts.
47:01Now the teams are allowed to produce them out of composite materials,
47:06but it has to have the same density as Jab Rock.
47:09So they're allowed to use a different material.
47:10But yeah, you can't, for example, make it out of a material much harder than Jab Rock.
47:14It has to have that same molecular construction, the same density of material.
47:19Comes Ralph Schumacher.
47:21Well off the pace.
47:26Kimi Räikköne.
47:27Not only four seconds.
47:31Oh, he does.
47:39Jarno Trulli.
47:42Jarno Saarinen, for whom he's name, had an interesting career.
47:45Less than four seasons in the Motorcycle Road Racing World Championship.
47:50For he was killed in an accident at Monza.
47:52And the story of that accident and oil on the track and the protests from journalists as well as riders that the race not go on makes for very interesting reading.
48:03Former 250 world champion was Jarno Saarinen and the winner of the Daytona 200 motorcycle race, crown jewel of American road racing, back in 1973.
48:15So the checkered flag has flown.
48:17So the checkered flag has flown.
48:19Kimi Räikkönen, the fast man of the session.
48:21Is that good news for McLaren?
48:23Well, that story is yet to be told.
48:25Welcome back to Friday practice at the Nürburgring.
48:32I know I said the previous commercial would be the last one, but that was the last one before the checkered flag wave.
