00:00Hello and welcome to coverage of the 2004 Formula 1 season live on Speed Channel.
00:27And the cars are on the track for the start of the second session of practice for the San Marino Grand Prix.
00:33I'm David Hobbs along with Steve Maché, our technical expert.
00:37Here's the cars pouring through the chicane, the Tambrella chicane down to Villeneuve Curve and Tosa.
00:44Steve, a great day for practice. The weather's perfect. The track looks good.
00:48It is absolutely perfect. Air temperature at the moment is a perfect 77 degrees and track is at 72.
00:54So a fine European summer's day.
00:56If this was in England, it would be a perfect day for punting down the can.
01:00Now, as I said, this is the second session.
01:02Earlier on, of course, we had the first practice session of the weekend at Imola.
01:07Known for its toll on brakes.
01:09And here you see Kimi Reichler's car smoking heavily after just one lap.
01:13Timo Glock in the third Jordan gets a little bit too adventurous there.
01:18Perfect 360 degree spin. Doesn't hit anything.
01:20Michael Schumacher getting a little bit frustrated with Ricardo Zonta and, as you can see, waves to him as he goes by.
01:27However, it would be Michael Schumacher that set the fastest time of the first practice session, 20.084.
01:33His brother, Ralph, would have a go in the Williams, but a little bit of the diffuser fence breaking away from the underside of the car.
01:39Much of the chagrin of team owner and principal Frank Williams.
01:43And here we are. Timo Glock back in the Jordan after that first spin having another go.
01:47This time he would really get his act together.
01:49And bam, right there. It would be day done for Timo Glock and the third Jordan.
01:55Bits of wing and debris flying everywhere. Timo Glock jumping onto the fence.
02:00Another going off late in the session with a jag of Christian Klain.
02:04No damage done down Aquaminerale, but once again the Ferraris led the way with Schumacher 1, Barrichello 2.
02:11On board now with Fischer-Keller coming out of Tosa up to the Piratella, a little right-hand sweep.
02:18This Piratella is a very fast downhill left-hander.
02:23Aquaminerale coming up.
02:27This is important here to get a good run up this steep hill.
02:34This is the Variante Alta. A lot of curb use there.
02:37These cars really using the curbs.
02:39He's got to get the suspension to sell it right for that, Steve.
02:41They have indeed. They need to be set relatively soft.
02:44Down to 85 miles an hour through that Variante Alta.
02:46Now that run down into Rivazza.
02:49Really a double apex corner here.
02:52183 miles an hour down to 74 at the approach to Rivazza 1 and then 85 at 2.
02:56So that's where the big stress is onto the brakes.
03:00And here as they come into the Variante Alta, which is the last corner.
03:03The stripe just coming up.
03:05So Pichichella there at 1.24.
03:08Michael Schumacher this morning did a 1.20.084.
03:12So he's fastest in this session so far, but I don't think that will last long there.
03:17We see one of the Hondas going out of the picture in front of him.
03:19Remember these guys primarily trying to decide on what tyre compound to use between the hard and soft compound.
03:26And those three sets of tyres that are allocated by the FIA must be used and handed back to the tyre supplier at the end of Friday's session.
03:34The idea of that, of course, is to force the cars onto the track.
03:38They have nothing to lose by trying to save those tyres for the race weekend itself.
03:41They will be scrapped effectively at the end of this session.
03:45Well, Schumacher using all the kerbs there.
03:49Coming out, what's his time looking like?
03:51Yeah.
03:52Faster so far.
03:53There's his brother Michael just about to suit up by the look of things.
03:56Taking one hat off.
03:58Putting the old fireproof balaclava helmet on.
04:03You'll notice it's just the dulcet tones of Steve and myself this morning.
04:07Obviously, this is a great relief to a lot of you.
04:09But tomorrow, Roberto Varsha will be back from a very important assignment he's got today in Florida.
04:16And, of course, last night he had a very important assignment doing the Hall of Fame intros at Talladega Speedway.
04:25On board with Ralph.
04:29Watch the suspension move.
04:31All back on.
04:37The reflection of the track gives it away a little bit as well.
04:46But I want to try and lay out during the on-board shot so we can enjoy the fun sound of the engine.
04:52But you'll see the car set up with a lot more front suspension movement, free play.
04:59That's in one and two.
05:02Another push along towards the pits.
05:07Ralph Schumacher had his first win here in 2001 on board Williams.
05:14It was their first win for substantial time.
05:17So he is 1.6 seconds slower than Anthony Davidson, who is currently leading the time.
05:23So as we watch Ralph bounce over the kerbs, we'll take a short break.
05:27But we'll be back with more action from Emola in just a few moments.
05:31So stay right here with us.
05:32Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by the all-new BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle.
05:43BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
05:45Welcome back to the second practice session from Emola for the Sunday's upcoming Grand Prix of San Marino.
05:57We're looking at Jenson Button here in the BAR Honda.
06:00His teammate Anthony Davidson currently heads the timetables at a 1 minute 22.449 second.
06:06Jenson Button just went into second spot with a 23.019.
06:11While we have a moment, we're watching Jenson Button.
06:14Let's have a look at the track map here at Emola.
06:17As you can see, 17 turns.
06:19A lot of them are pretty slow with some fast runs in between.
06:21So it's very tough on brakes here.
06:23It's a little bit bumpy.
06:24And as you can see from that map, it's obviously very difficult to overtake here, Steve.
06:28It is, absolutely.
06:28That Porsche track map says it all.
06:30And there, from 13 down to 14, is really the high braking point.
06:33Let's say 185 miles an hour down to about 75.
06:37110 miles an hour ripped off the speed of the car in a matter of just a couple of hundred feet.
06:41That's going to put tremendous load in on the brakes.
06:44It's really all about getting the car to work around here.
06:46You have to set the suspension soft and compliant so the car can use the curves,
06:50especially if it's Varianta Alta there, turns 11 and 12.
06:53You'll see a lot of the cars running very wide at 12.
06:56They've got some of that, what they call grasscrete, the other side of the apex to allow the cars to be able to use.
07:01I think, really, what they shouldn't do, use too much to track the other side of that curbing.
07:06You've got to have really good traction here coming out of all these slow corners.
07:10Here's coming up to, there you see some of that curb use there that Mr. Button's doing.
07:14Boom.
07:16Very tough on suspensions because it's hard on driveline here too because you get a lot of acceleration here.
07:21There's that grasscrete we're seeing there.
07:26With Barrichello in the Ferrari, you'll notice when we have another shot at the B.A.R.
07:30that Jeff Willis, the technical director and really chief aerodynamicist at B.A.R.
07:34has copied that very small wing attached to the top of the air box like Ferrari are using.
07:41B.A.R. have done the same thing.
07:42A little bit wider than the Ferrari unit, the idea of that just to clean the airflow up.
07:46It doesn't really generate any downforce, but it cleans the flow of the air towards the rear element of the wing.
07:52The element of the rear wing, I should say.
07:54And that's what they've used it for.
07:55And Jeff Willis straight on to that idea.
07:58Put it into the winter, also an advantage.
07:59If you can't beat him, copy him.
08:01Yep, absolutely.
08:02And ever thus in Formula One, IndyCar racing, everybody's always trying to hide stuff,
08:08but sooner or later people pick him on what's a good idea, i.e. the very high nose that Tyrrell brought out many years back.
08:15But of course, everybody just jumped right in behind that.
08:18Even looking at Barrichello, obviously doing some experimentation here, six seconds off the pace.
08:24Of course, some of these, you know, these Friday, it's very difficult to get a real feel for what's happening
08:29because they're doing all sorts of tyre evaluation, what tyres they're going to use
08:33because they have to make a decision by nine o'clock tomorrow morning
08:35what tyres they're going to use for qualifying and for the race.
08:37So all that stuff has to be worked out today.
08:39Brake wear, fuel consumption, everything has to be done today.
08:42So you see a lot of longer and slower runs here.
08:45It's Michael Schumacher now in the Ferrari.
08:47Jenson Button is now second.
08:49David Coulthard, Kimi Räikkönen are third and fourth in McLaren.
08:54Jarno Trulli is fifth.
08:57Juan Pablo Montoya, sixth.
08:59Barrichello, seventh.
09:00Ralph Schumacher, eighth.
09:02But as I say, these times today, it's very hard to pick out what's happening.
09:06Of course, especially the teams that are using three cars like BAR
09:10because they've got Anthony Davidson out there who we won't be seeing again
09:13after this session.
09:15On board with the world champ.
09:23This is where he loses about 110 miles an hour and hit about 40 feet.
09:27Brakes on his cars.
09:29Outstanding.
09:29Same again, there.
09:37Huge.
09:38Oh, working the car there.
09:39Watch if we have another shot of the on-board shot.
09:41Watch for Michael's hand, his right hand coming off the steering wheel
09:44to adjust the brake bias around the truck.
09:46There, right there.
09:47Not allowed to do that electronically.
09:49It must be done by a manually operated cable.
09:52Shifting the balance front to rear along the car's axle.
09:55Boy, you get a very quick correction there as you bounce over those kerbs.
10:01I tell you, these Formula One cars, to me, they still look like speeded up video games.
10:06I mean, you just can't imagine these cars change directions so quickly.
10:10What they've been able to do, they've made the 600 kilogram is the minimum weight
10:15of the combination of the driver and the chassis.
10:17But these cars, I mean, certainly these guys right here, Ferrari,
10:20have probably got something close on 75 to 80 kilograms of ballast low down.
10:25That's like 160 pounds of ballast low down,
10:29which really improves the center of gravity on the car.
10:31That allows it to move so well.
10:33Now we see Barrichello jumping over the kerbs.
10:34The Ferrari team's looking happy.
10:36We'll take a short break here from Imola.
10:38We'll move back with more action in a minute.
10:39So stay right here with us for a sunny day in Imola.
10:42Welcome back to Imola for the San Marino Grand Prix.
10:58On board now with Fernando Alonso,
11:01who while we were away,
11:02Pip Rubens Barrichello for second spot behind Michael Schumacher.
11:05Just under four tenths behind Michael Schumacher now.
11:09Let's watch him over the kerbs here.
11:15Car looked pretty good.
11:16Not a huge amount of steering input.
11:18No, and nowhere near the amount of suspension movement
11:20on the front of this Renault in comparison to the Williams FW26.
11:25Look at it.
11:26You can see the movement from the push runs,
11:27but it's very minimal.
11:30A bit of understeer coming out of that last part of Rivazza,
11:33which will not speed up down here.
11:35It's a pretty fast and important run.
11:39There again, Alonso now running in second spot
11:48behind Michael Schumacher in his practice session.
11:50Obviously on a multi-lap run here,
11:52doing some sort of evaluation of tyre wear,
11:55fuel consumption, brake wear, etc.
11:56Fast run down to Villeneuve Chicane.
12:05Short blast up to Tosa.
12:06Used to be a great overtaking spot,
12:08there's not so much now.
12:11Got to get the exit right here
12:12because it's a long pull uphill here.
12:14A little steep downhill to Akaminer Ali.
12:26You know, the guys, I mean, certainly Alonso,
12:27they look so calm, so in control,
12:29and then just every now and again,
12:31you see them really have to flick the steering wheel to catch it.
12:33It's kind of indicative of how much of a sort of
12:36honed razor's edge these cars have between traction,
12:38adhesion, and absolutely none at all
12:40and sliding off into the arm car.
12:44It all happens very quickly.
12:58You know, Alonso's in front of him
12:59got off that part of Rivazza pretty quick.
13:10Obviously, he's filling the databank with information,
13:19doing this multi-lap run.
13:22Felipe Massa.
13:24Great to see the steering input from Alonso
13:27coming off that final chicane onto the start-finish.
13:29That combination between understeer, oversteer,
13:31understeer, oversteer, trying to correct it all the while
13:33and keep the power on as much as possible.
13:35Traction control will help a little bit,
13:37but it's still mainly in the hands of the driver
13:39to be able to pull it back
13:40and razor-sharp reaction to be able to do it that quick.
13:44Of course, that's what makes the difference
13:45between quick-drive and a slow-driver, right?
13:47Absolutely.
13:48There's the two McLowns down there, ninth and tenth.
13:50Meanwhile, Mark Webber in the Jag has jumped into second spot,
13:53just three-tenths behind Michael Schumacher.
13:55Alonso pushed down to third,
13:57Barrichello fourth, Davidson fifth.
14:05That's Massa sliding the car around Rivazza one.
14:07We've seen quite a few drivers doing that as well,
14:09really pulling in very late on that apex, David,
14:13to Rivazza one, trying to scrub that speed off
14:15and really scrubbing the speed off
14:16by just throwing the car sideways
14:18and letting the tyres do the work.
14:19Yeah, exactly, yeah.
14:22Mark Webber in the Jag,
14:24having a good, strong run.
14:26Also getting the old databank full of info.
14:29Yeah, what these guys are doing.
14:31Now, Basslinders in the third of the Minardis.
14:34As you rightly say, David,
14:36they'll be looking at doing tyre comparisons
14:38between the hard and the soft compound.
14:40The regulations allow the tyre suppliers
14:42to produce a harder compound and a soft compound,
14:44but then they want to put different levels of fuel
14:46into the car and force the tyres.
14:48Oh, look at this.
14:49Mark Webber held up behind Basslinders
14:52right from before the first corner,
14:55right through the Tamburlowski case,
14:56so Mark Webber won't be happy with that.
14:58That other Jag we saw wasn't Mark Webber,
15:00that was Christian Kling in the second of the car,
15:02who I thought at Bahrain put on a terrific display
15:04trying to get around Kimi Räikkönen.
15:07Outbraked him three times,
15:08went and allowing Räikkönen to get by him again,
15:15but nevertheless he was really trying hard.
15:16Now, let's have another look at David at this FW26.
15:19This is Ralph Schumacher in the car.
15:20Well, there's the font says it all for us.
15:22I want to have a look at the amount
15:23of front suspension movement on this car again.
15:27My sources at Williams at the Aerodynamics Department
15:29have been saying, you know,
15:31the mechanical engineers want to run it too soft.
15:33They keep putting too much roll into it.
15:35Well, here you need it,
15:36and I think they've possibly gone to the extreme,
15:38certainly on the front of the car.
15:40See a lot of movement on the car moving up and down.
15:43It is a fairly bumpy track.
15:45Boy, oh boy, bumping is on the approach
15:47into Tamburella there,
15:48and then of course compound it
15:49by leaping straight onto the curve.
15:51What you want to have a look at is the pushrods
15:53as they go into the chassis,
15:54the two 45 degree angle carbon rods
15:57that go into the chassis.
15:57You see how much movement there is at the top.
16:00The thing's moving up and down
16:01by about an inch and a half.
16:03And that's all movement onto the damper shaft
16:05at the end of that travel.
16:07That's Montoya we've now seen,
16:08because they're doing some camera cuts here
16:11that's a bit difficult to keep up with,
16:12but that is now Montoya going through the same set of corners,
16:15crossing the stripe,
16:16and he is number one.
16:19Three tenths quicker than Michael Schumacher.
16:21Now, don't forget Michael Schumacher's time this afternoon
16:23is at 1.22 this morning.
16:24He did 20 flat,
16:26so it was good as flat.
16:28Yeah, pole last year, David.
16:302003 pole,
16:311.22.237 from Michael Schumacher,
16:34so he was two seconds under pole this morning.
16:36Of course,
16:37as you rightly say,
16:38wasn't running that fuel in the car,
16:39I doubt.
16:40Although,
16:40general impression seems to be
16:42about two seconds quicker than last year,
16:44the current crop of F1 chassis.
16:46which is really
16:47basically down to tyre development.
16:49Much, much,
16:50now you've got two competing tyre companies there,
16:52Bridgestone and Michelin.
16:53Michelin's on
16:53this car that we're looking at now,
16:55the Williams BMW,
16:57down to Aquaminerati again.
16:58Let's look at that steering input
17:00as he comes out the second one over the kerb.
17:03There's one of your quick,
17:04quick attention grabbing
17:07stabs at the wheel.
17:08I was going to say,
17:09we'll see the same thing
17:09over these kerbs here too,
17:11but,
17:11whoa,
17:12the old tail just,
17:13yeah.
17:15You can see that suspension
17:16moving quite a bit there
17:17up the front.
17:20Stuff on the brakes.
17:25Of course,
17:25the aerodynamicists
17:26don't like roll
17:27because it changes the gap
17:28between the ground
17:29and the car,
17:29which affects their aerodynamic
17:30airflow so,
17:32so drastically.
17:34Now,
17:35as Juan Pablo Montoya
17:36puts another lap
17:38under his belt,
17:39we'll take a short break here.
17:41but we'll be back at Imola
17:42and the sunshine
17:43and the practice
17:44for more action
17:44in just a moment,
17:45so stay with us
17:47for more from Imola
17:48in just a minute.
17:51Well,
17:51hello.
17:53Yes.
17:56Welcome back to Imola
17:57for the second practice session
17:59for the San Marino Grand Prix.
18:00You're looking at David Coulthard,
18:01who,
18:01as you can see,
18:02has just jumped into P2
18:03behind Juan Pablo Montoya.
18:07Michael Schumacher
18:07is still in third.
18:09Now,
18:09don't forget to join us
18:10tomorrow morning
18:11at 8 a.m. Eastern
18:12for coverage of qualifying
18:13for the San Marino Grand Prix.
18:15We'll see if Michael Schumacher
18:16can keep his streak
18:17of pole positions alive.
18:19Again,
18:19that's tomorrow
18:20at 8 a.m. Eastern,
18:21only here on Speed.
18:22However,
18:23this event is subject
18:24to Blackhawk.
18:28Down to Aquaminorale.
18:33How's this intermediate time look?
18:34And there's your Grass Creek.
18:44How's his front suspension looking, Steve?
18:46Very stable.
18:48I think it's only Williams
18:49that have really gone
18:50to this extreme,
18:51but
18:51we'll see how things progress.
18:53We'll see whether or not
18:54that suspension travel
18:55is reduced
18:56as the session continues
18:57or whether or not
18:57they do something overnight.
18:58And they do want
18:59to get the car
19:00to work well
19:00over the curb.
19:01It's a well-understood
19:02engineering philosophy
19:04around here.
19:05Look at that,
19:06Michael Schumacher.
19:06And he was quickest
19:07on the first sector
19:08as well.
19:09So,
19:09I mean,
19:10this could be about
19:12a 21 or a 20.8,
19:17something like that.
19:18Assuming he gets
19:19the Rivazza correct.
19:21Using all the road there.
19:23And that last little chicane
19:24before the start
19:25goes straight up.
19:27Where we see the guys
19:28fighting with the wheel
19:29left and right.
19:30Incredible rotation
19:31now on that car.
19:3421.1.
19:36So,
19:36he was quickest
19:37on all three sectors.
19:3923.2,
19:40sector 1,
19:4127.1.
19:43Sector 2.
19:44He was 0.7 quicker
19:45than Coulthard
19:46during the second sector
19:47of that lap.
19:48How's that
19:49Grass Creek day
19:49we keep talking about?
19:50It's kind of a bit
19:51of a bet noire with me.
19:52I don't really approve
19:53of it.
19:54It kind of encourages
19:55the drivers to use it.
19:57I know the drivers
19:57are saying,
19:58well, for safety reasons,
19:58we don't want to kick up
19:59all those stones and gravel.
20:01We want more grip.
20:02But,
20:02you're just kind of
20:03encouraging the drivers
20:04to cheat the layout
20:06of the track.
20:06To keep taking
20:07more and more away from it.
20:08You just don't want
20:09to encourage drivers
20:10to do anything like that.
20:11I mean,
20:11they should have
20:12a barbed wire fence
20:14there.
20:15They're not stopping
20:15doing it.
20:17In the old days,
20:18you were definitely
20:19tempted not to cheat
20:20because,
20:21I kid you not,
20:22around places like
20:22the Nürburgring,
20:23there was a barbed wire fence.
20:25you know,
20:25typical,
20:26it was just to get
20:26the cows out,
20:27really.
20:27But,
20:27I mean,
20:29there were none of
20:29these guardrails
20:30stuff and all that
20:30nice runoff.
20:31I mean,
20:32the barbed wire fence
20:33ran right down
20:34the side of the track.
20:36For Ralf Schumacher.
20:37Spa as well,
20:38Ralf Schumacher,
20:38here's Jano Trulli
20:40in the Renault.
20:42These guys have got
20:42a new engine package
20:44here,
20:44B specification,
20:46that Renault engine.
20:47Not entirely sure
20:47what they've done to her.
20:48I keep trying to get
20:49data out of them.
20:49They're a little bit
20:50reluctant to say
20:51what they've done to her.
20:51I don't know if they've just
20:52knocked the topic
20:54clearances down
20:55by a couple of fouls.
20:56Jano Trulli's currently
20:58lying in 13th spot,
20:59but only just a couple
21:00of tenths off
21:01in those last two sectors.
21:02he could launch himself
21:03up into the top
21:05two or three.
21:09Now,
21:10Jano Trulli,
21:11of course,
21:11has sort of
21:12basically been quicker
21:13pretty well everywhere
21:15this year
21:15and his teammate
21:16Alonso
21:16and, of course,
21:17last year
21:17the reverse was true
21:18and everybody was
21:19kind of writing him off.
21:20There he is.
21:21Yeah, good enough
21:21for P2.
21:22P2 puts him ahead
21:24of Montoya and Coutard.
21:26Ah.
21:28Christian Silk,
21:29the former race engineer
21:30from Benetton
21:31that was then
21:32taken onto the test team
21:33has reappeared back
21:34onto the race team
21:35at Renault.
21:36Well, that's very
21:36interesting.
21:37I'll be checking
21:37that story out.
21:39Ah.
21:39Well, as we watch Jano
21:40Trulli kick up
21:41a puff of dust
21:42there as he climbs
21:42up to the
21:43Variante Alta,
21:46we'll take a short
21:47break again for Memola,
21:48but we'll do that
21:49with more actually
21:50in just a minute.
21:50Stay with us.
22:01Welcome back to
22:04Emola for practice
22:05for the San Marino
22:06Grand Prix on Sunday.
22:07Kimi Räikkönen
22:08on his way down
22:10to the Aquaminorale
22:11turn.
22:12And while we're away,
22:17Taku Masato
22:18took P1
22:19in the BAR Honda.
22:24So he now
22:24leaves Schumacher.
22:26Jano Trulli
22:27who assured this
22:27before we went
22:28to break.
22:28Montoya Slim
22:29fourth.
22:30Räikkönen
22:30who we're on board
22:31with now
22:32is fifth.
22:34Mark Webber
22:34who briefly led
22:35the time sheets
22:36now back in seventh.
22:37Ooh!
22:39A lot of correction
22:40there.
22:42See what happens
22:43when he corrects
22:44it going left
22:44right here.
22:45That would be
22:46the last bit
22:47where it could be
22:47a bit of
22:48too bad now.
22:52Look at that
22:532.2 seconds
22:54slower
22:54than Taku Masato
22:57Ron Dennis.
22:58Pat Fry
22:59the engineer
22:59on the left.
23:01Look at a
23:01vast bank
23:02of monitors.
23:04There's those
23:04big breakouts
23:05on the McLaren
23:05but you would
23:06expect to
23:06see it here
23:07as we've been
23:08saying
23:08McLaren
23:09have always
23:10well I would
23:11say always
23:11certainly in the
23:12last five or six
23:12years wanted
23:13to use those
23:13bigger break
23:14ducks
23:14but you do
23:16need it here.
23:17Traditionally
23:17here in Canada
23:18were the two
23:19toughest tracks
23:20on breaks
23:20until they went
23:22to Bahrain
23:22a couple
23:23of three weeks
23:23ago
23:24and that was
23:24very tough
23:25on breaks
23:25in fact
23:26Coulthard
23:27suffered a
23:28brake disc
23:29failure
23:29during practice
23:30on Saturday's
23:31practice
23:32yep
23:32Osato
23:34still P1
23:35as we're
23:36watching

24:03this is where
24:05that speed

24:07I suppose
24:08the speed

28:19welcome back to practice action from Imola Anthony Davidson on board there we just seen him go to P5 so we have Button and Sato 1 and 2 for BAR Honda and Anthony Davidson their third test driver now in fifth position so
28:37having a pretty good run here and what you were saying earlier about the test of the other team saying at the last test how good the BAR Honda was looking obviously it looks like it is all very much the real thing
28:48David Richard no doubt extremely happy with the way things are going but like I say you can't put a huge amount of storage of time today because they're really just setting it up
29:01let's listen to
29:02Anthony
29:03Aquaman Alonso
29:31amazing quick downshifts
29:41yeah
29:41just amazing
29:42yeah all of those downshifts now David of course to the current regulations have to be done each individual shift has to be done by hand you can't pre-score
30:01select any of those
30:02gear shifts there
30:03Giorgio Pantano
30:06it's a lock up
30:08the front brake
30:09to BAR making
30:11making hay really during this session because they unlike the other top teams are not allowed to run
30:16a third driver
30:18BAR do that
30:21by virtue of how the regulations are structured so Anthony Davidson out there and basically that gives them
30:26another opportunity to run different setups so there's no need for the two race drivers to get bogged down in one particular avenue of trying to get the car set up they can send Davidson out
30:35look at the data between the two cars and put a third alternative onto that car and send them out and see what sort of data figures they get off that so they really can make hay during this session
30:44well of course and the other ones are the Toyota there in the background they they also have three drivers with Carlos Zonta is out there doing exactly the same sort of thing for them so it's it's a pretty it's a pretty good idea for these guys and Jag too have three drivers
30:57uh Bjorn Verdheim their third driver although he doesn't seem to be uh just doesn't seem to be turning the times in how I thought he would although at the moment he's quicker than Christian Klee
31:08and of course Timo Glock is the third driver for Jordan but Jordan seemed to be right out of that moment anyway so not an awful lot of help one way or the other
31:19B.A.R. as well I've just had there a revolutionary well as far as B.A.R. are concerned new third element rear wing banned by the FIA they come up with an ingenious way of circumventing the regulations to allow them to put a third element on that rear wing I mean how they've arrived at is really a very surreptitious interpretation
31:49of the legalese of the technical regulations and they built the wing and started to test it and of course Charlie Whiting who's the race director and still effectively in charge of all technical decisions in the FIA of whether or not the cars conform to legality took one look at the rear wing and said look guys no I said two elements on the rear wing that's what I mean I don't care how you're looking at the regulations get rid of it it's banned
32:10I like Charlie Whiting in that respect you know he's a very straight talking guy and what he says makes an awful lot of sense when I say two elements I mean two elements
32:26what's that front wing been going down look as the speed goes up
32:33as the speed goes up
32:34well I'll go at the foot of our stairs
32:39Sarto obviously again on some sort of multi-lap run here there's Jock Clear looking at the monitors behind there
32:52Jock Clear of course long time companion and well companion mechanic to Jack Villeneuve who was a little bit peeved last year when they moved Villeneuve on or out
33:04and he took over Sarto's car I think he was a little bit sort of I'm not sure about this but I think his opinion has changed significantly this year I think so
33:13yeah we're watching Montoya in the Williams then Jock Clear used to be a Williams engineer who was engineer to Jack Villeneuve when they were both at Williams together and he moved with him too
33:25when Jack made the decision to go the other Jack Jock went with him to B.A.R. to form that team together it never came off absolutely not work in any way like the Ferrari relationship with Michael Schumacher
33:39now and Ralph Schumacher's got stars his eyes now about doing the same thing at Toyota
33:43well dream one sunshine Ralph is no Michael when it comes to gelling teams and people
33:50ooh a lot of grass creek there
33:53well he's bad enough being duffed up by Ferrari but Williams and McLaren I mean they must be just throwing their arms up in the air in despair when they see how well the B.A.R. Honda's are going that's the last thing they need
34:11is somebody else coming along stealing some of their thunder
34:14ooh Montoya great
34:16look how stiffly sprung that door as into how it was before they've already stiffened the front suspension up
34:23watching Montoya disappear down there is Frank Williams shaking his head some up we're going to take a break and we'll be right back with more from Imola in just a minute
34:31back in Imola we're now watching Jano truly in the Renault Michael Schumacher has just finished a hot lap it was no quicker than buttons and it was no quicker than some of the laps he'd done before so one assumes he's doing some testing
34:50join us Sunday morning for live coverage of the San Marino Grand Prix coverage begins at 7.30 a.m. Eastern with the Acura pre-race show and will be live straight through to the post-race interviews where our own Peter Windsor will be asking the question again that Sunday morning at 7.30 Eastern live and only here on speed however this event is subject to blackout
35:12the Arno truly going up to the Valley Antialta just about a half a second off Jenson Button space there everybody's praising this car this Renault chassis for its aerodynamics
35:32this steering input here should have understeered that bad
35:35looks like his time is going to be a little bit better than his last time but he'll probably still end up fourth unless he makes a very good job of this last turn
35:53very calm and controlled again coming through the final chicane not an awful lot of steering input more input there from Barrichello
36:01now they're truly looking very cool and calm considering he did a half marathon last Sunday
36:07did he?
36:08so no doubt his little legs are a little bit tired
36:12his little weight
36:13blessed
36:16Barrichello
36:17P11 again I suspect a lot of this is going to be heavy fuel load now on these tyres to get an idea of
36:22which tyres is
36:24it's not particularly abrasive this track and certainly the compounds of the tyres as John Todd and Ross Braum are watching
36:29on the Ferrari pit wall
36:32who Ross Braum actually said a couple of weeks ago didn't he that we better start looking out for BAR Honda perhaps
36:38yes absolutely
36:39I think they are a distinct threat
36:41watching the Ferrari go over those curves
36:44I'm sure
36:45Barrichello with a lot of fuel on board
36:47here
36:48with these soft compound tyres
36:50you want to know whether or not you're going to get 10 laps, 11 laps, 12 before they really start to go off
36:55oh
36:56Zonta
36:57in the Toyota
36:58pulled over
36:59I don't know why yet
37:01not much smoke coming out so
37:03hopefully not an engine blow up
37:05but some sort of electronic blitz or something
37:08it's just a pulling off
37:10could well be that the parameters of the engine have started to go off spec a little bit
37:14and they will have an automatic shutout
37:17because what they don't want to do and this one engine for Grand Prix weekend
37:20they don't really want the engine to blow up to the extent that they can't find out what the problem is
37:25so they will have a safety cut off
37:27now I'm only speculating that's the case
37:28we don't know at all
37:29of course
37:30Ricardo Zonta
37:31is the third driver
37:32so that would be
37:33he's only missing 11 seconds of his weekend
37:3511 minutes
37:36of his weekend anyway
37:37because he won't be
37:38appearing again
37:40until we're all back in two weeks time
37:43for Barcelona
37:44these guys
37:45McLaren and Mercedes
37:46what are they going to do about their engine problems
37:49they've been very quiet in testing
37:50they haven't been saying an awful lot
37:52I mean they've come out with this sort of
37:53white wish-wash answer of
37:56well we've all had problems
37:57and we're going to work to get it sorted
37:59yeah sure well everybody's doing that every day in Formula One
38:01that's nothing new at all
38:02but they have had extreme problems with engine reliability
38:05unreliability I should say on that Mercedes engine
38:08well
38:09it's been the worst start to a Formula One season for McLaren since 1981
38:14and this is the first time that the team has failed to record a single top five finish
38:18in any of the opening three races since then
38:20so not a good start for Ron's men at all
38:30he's currently down in ninth spot
38:33his teammate Kimi Räikkönen is in seventh
38:35Kimi Räikkönen must be just so shell-shocked
38:37he's had an engine go in every single race
38:40and one in practice at Bahrain
38:43yeah
38:44good grouping you would say if you're on a rifle range there
38:47you would indeed
38:49I expect he weeks that Ron was on the rifle range
38:53he had the rifle
38:54so
38:55as we watch Cooltide rocking around Imola
38:58we'll take a short break
38:59we'll be right back with more in just a minute
39:01stay with us
39:08back at Imola
39:10who's that Steve you know all these blots
39:12looking a bit dissatisfied
39:14although Kimi Räikkönen while we're away
39:16did in fact go up to fourth spot in the McLaren
39:19we were just seeing on board shots of Kimi just a moment ago
39:24Jean-Saint Bouton
39:27lives in Monte Carlo now
39:28which is what he calls himself down there
39:31is
39:32well he gets better service that way in the restaurants
39:34he certainly does David
39:35Mr. Bouton
39:36welcome to our humble restaurant
39:39where you will spend some of your millions
39:42yeah they talk about Ralph Schumacher wants
39:4518 million next year
39:46I think maybe Jenson Button will be getting
39:48some of that
39:50Taku Masato
39:52Honda's favourite son
39:53rushing down to Revanza
39:56and obviously not doing a bad job
39:59best result by a Japanese driver
40:01Ed Bahrain
40:03and that's been pretty good actually this year
40:05he's looking good
40:06he's still quickest in the speed trap
40:08this second session as well
40:09again that was
40:10194 miles an hour
40:11just shy of 195 going down into Revanza
40:14Revanza
40:22he's a fun guy you know I like him
40:25well the thing about Takuma was he came into Formula One with Jordan two years ago and had a miserable season because he made a lot of mistakes but
40:32every track he went to he'd never been to before and two the car let him down so many times and three he had that horrendous accident in Austria when he got T-boned by Nick Hydefelt which is absolutely nothing to do with him he was it was the most horrific accident and everybody wrote him off but the fact is the year before that he had absolutely cleaned up in the British Formula 3 championship and anybody that cleans up like he did in British Formula 3 has got to be good
40:59Michael Schumacher
41:02Michael Schumacher the reigning world champion with six championships under his belt
41:07and of course his teammate then was Anthony Davidson and he bested him very handily and Anthony Davidson is no slouch
41:13so that's the door is this guy here
41:15have a look at the rear wing end plates on this F2004 Ferrari
41:19a very square cut the very trailing edge I'm talking about
41:22they'll get a nice square on shot to that
41:24now compare that to BAR and most of the other teams have started to run a sort of quarter moon cutout right at the top edge of the rear wing end plates
41:33the idea of that of course the regulations this year have insisted that those rear wing end plates are 100mm about 5 inches longer than they used to be to try and put more sponsorship onto the car
41:44a lot of the other teams have tried to put a quarter moon cutout to feed the vortex of the airflow off in exactly the same way as they used to do before
41:51but Ferrari and Rory Byrne have not done that on this F2004 car
41:59it's very interesting they haven't done that and yet the other teams have felt it necessary to try and put that quarter cutout
42:04the black art of aerodynamics
42:06the black art of aerodynamics
42:07well absolutely the black art of aerodynamics
42:09they all go in the same wind tone and they all come out with completely different looking
42:11I don't understand that at all
42:13I don't understand that at all
42:15it's very odd
42:17you'd think that aerodynamics was aerodynamics
42:21you would
42:22it's certainly become more of a precise science than a black art but there is still a certain amount of mystery and intrigue to it that's for sure
42:30Michael Schumacher dropping back here obviously to give himself a good run only four and a half minutes left
42:36oh no we're not going back to give himself a good run
42:39say er
42:41he'll probably go up again and out again
42:43Button and Sato leading the time for 20.9 that's a good time for Button and Sato
42:51very quick in and out at Himmler as well during the pits now
42:55and of course they've upped the pit lane speed limit during race day this year to 100 km an hour
43:00and I'm sure that will see an end to any possibility of one and perhaps two pit stops during the race
43:06I think 99% of these guys will all be on a three stop strategy
43:09it's always been fairly quick in and out here at Himmler anyway
43:12just by virtue of the geography of the track and the layout of the track
43:15and the layout of the track but now more than ever
43:17what an increase in speed I'm sure they'll be doing three stops
43:20well of course this year too the tyres are getting softer and softer
43:23which is one of the reasons why the times this year for the top teams are two seconds a lap quicker than they were last year
43:28because everybody's tyres are softer
43:30and so you've definitely got to get down to that three stop strategy
43:32because they just won't last long enough
43:34longer than about eleven or twelve laps
43:36because if the war continues next year you might see them down to four stops
43:40Alonso
43:47and then by the time we get down to the change of regulations in 2008
43:50they'll be on ten stop strategy
43:53do a quick lap, come in
43:55they won't have a fuel tunnel, they'll just have a damp sponge
43:58so Alonso here
44:00is he going to try and turn in a quick one before the end of the day
44:03to have that psychological edge as they go into Saturday morning
44:06or will they restrain themselves
44:09and do the testing they need to do
44:11yeah they should do that
44:12bit of understeer there, he kind of missed that apex at Tosa
44:14looked like he was going to
44:15that was the truck day
44:16but of course we unfortunately we had to go to the truck shop
44:19much more
44:20a lot of understeer on that truck
44:21I was thinking that
44:22where are things way too high
44:23yeah
44:24we need to drop the rhinites on it
44:25quick hands this lad
44:32he'll be 23 on Sunday
44:37Alonso so
44:38more father time ticket away for Alonso there
44:41nice part of the truck
44:45nice part of the truck
44:46here
44:47well Alonso's only 40 years younger than he
44:49down to Rivazza
44:51it's got a four negative G loading on the driver there
44:54when we stomp on the brakes
44:56again about 110 miles an hour
44:58speed reduction
44:59only eyeballs only held in by the visor
45:01only eyeballs only held in by the visor
45:02only eyeballs only held in by the visor
45:06just down to the market in front of the
45:09just down to the market in front of the
45:10Tembrillo coming up
45:15Mr Briatore sir
45:20watch the car going over the curbs
45:27see not an awful lot of front suspension movement there David
45:29nothing like we saw on that Williams earlier on
45:31again we haven't seen
45:32and I keep waiting for one of the on board
45:34one of the slow-mo shots of the Williams
45:37since they
45:38I'm sure have stiffened the front suspension up a lot
45:40on that car from the start of the session
45:42that's moving very little on that Renault isn't it
45:44the Ferrari team
45:54I'm not sure where the Barrichello is running at the moment
45:56there's Kimi Reichen getting out of the car
45:58so he's
46:00I think pretty well everybody's in the garage at the moment
46:02except Alonso who we obviously we've seen on the track
46:04flat out on the T car
46:06and the B
46:07yeah
46:08it's just non-stop action in the Ferrari
46:10dressed out mechanic there
46:11the two BAR cars are still out on the track
46:13so they could
46:14well they'll have a job to improve
46:15they've already done there
46:16a pretty good job
46:17flag man ready
46:19listening on his little headset
46:21okay Enrico put the flag out to now
46:25Rubens is still on the track
46:31well you want to make maximum use of it
46:34if you can get out there and run
46:35and you think that the engine's going to be okay
46:37that's the key factor
46:38if you've got confidence the reliability the lump
46:40keep your driver out there
46:41keep pounding laps
46:43have a look at the temperature of the brakes
46:45have a look at the temperature of the engine
46:46see what the cooling's going to be like
46:47most importantly in this session
46:49look at the condition and the feel of the tyres
46:51well of course you've got a nice clear lap here
46:53because everybody has stopped
46:54he's currently 11th
46:55he's on 18 laps
46:57oh look at that by one second he gets one more lap
47:03that right there
47:04that is what you call good timing
47:05I tell you I'm that is not an accident
47:07I would be convinced that is planned strategy by Frey to make absolutely sure he got another lap in
47:13I think Ross Braum was saying as he came down to the Variante Basse
47:17come along there Rubens
47:18you've only got four seconds left
47:19push a little bit chap
47:20push a little bit chap
47:21I'm sure
47:23I'm absolutely sure
47:25oh well he was a long way off on that first intermediate
47:27so obviously not trying for a spectacular last lap
47:30so Rubens is going to end up being about 11th
47:32and he'll have 20 laps under his belt
47:35what Rubens will do here is just cool off a little bit
47:39back off
47:40he's done his he's done his flying lap
47:41they've got the data off that
47:42so he'll try and cool the car back down
47:44so again to try and reduce any possibility of mechanical problems with the engine
47:47probably right up and down to Rivazza
47:50the last two sharp corners
47:52and they'll really stamp on the brakes
47:54to get an idea of the brake temperatures
47:56once the car returns to the pits
47:58the mechanics will want to put temperature probes onto the discs
48:01and verify that the information coming off the infrared sensor
48:04on the brakes corresponds to another gadget
48:09another gauge
48:10so they've got a definite idea that everything is working correct
48:13the temperature they're seeing is as it should be
48:15Jim's going to go into pits here?
48:17no he's not
48:18so obviously they're doing some data collection here aren't they?
48:22yeah
48:23for him to bother with another lap
48:25just as much as I say
48:27you know you
48:28if you've got reliability in the car
48:29keep the guys out there
48:30because track time is the one thing
48:32no matter how much money these guys have got in their annual budget
48:35you cannot buy track time during the race weekend
48:38you've got to optimize it
48:41well the top two cars Button and Sato have done 25 laps
48:45Michael Schumann has done 23
48:47Kimi Riker has only done 18
48:49Jano truly has done 25 laps
48:51Anthony Davidson of course has done 30
48:53but it doesn't matter with him if his engine blows up
48:55it doesn't matter because he's not going out again this weekend
48:57he's done
48:58those are all the nice shots we see of the driver profile
49:01I think we'll find the cameras actually mounted inside the wing mirror casing
49:05very small little camera hidden away in there that will give that shot
49:11yeah so Rubens Barrichello making his way back to the pits
49:15obviously the last man out on the track
49:17not exactly a huge crowd assembled to see practice today
49:21so there you see the results of the practice
49:24we'll take a short break and we'll be back with our results
49:27and a wrap up in just a moment so stay right with us
49:30as we take a short break
49:41welcome back to Imola for a scene of the San Marino Grand Prix
49:44on Sunday coming up there you see some great aerial shots
49:47and here are the results of the practice today
49:49well I tell you what that's good to see isn't it
49:51Jenson Button and Takuma Sato BAR 1 and 2
49:55ok it's only Friday practice session
49:57and we don't know how much fuel they've been putting in
49:59and what compounds
50:00nevertheless they are impressive times
50:02now Michael did a 1.20 flat this morning
50:05so 9 tenths of a second quicker than Jenson Button
50:07but there he is and look at that
50:09what 5,000 seconds slower than Sato
50:12Kimi Raikkonen not having a bad run in the McLaren
50:14the Arno Trullian the Renault
50:15a very good variety of cars there
50:18Davison Montoya, Alonso Coulthard
50:20and then Ralph Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Mark Webber in the Jag
50:24who briefly led the times
50:26Panis and DiMato in the two Toyotas
50:28Felipe Master in the Sauber
50:30Fisi Keller, E17 in the Sauber
50:332.5 seconds off the pace there or thereabouts
50:37and Ricciardo is on to the Toyota again
50:39so really, you know, Toyota still struggling to get to grips
50:42without to set this new chassis up
50:44well, that does it for our first hour of coverage
50:48of the 2004 San Marino Grand Prix weekend
50:51join us tonight at 12 o'clock midnight
