Storm chaser Aaron Rigsby reported from quiet Greenville, Mississippi, as an ice storm begins. Wind, freezing temperatures and road concerns are creating dangerous conditions across the region early on Jan. 24.
Transcript
00:00He's in Greenwood, Mississippi, but an area that is more known for their severe weather
00:05than their ice and snow. But unfortunately, that's exactly what we're predicting. And
00:11I'm sure, Aaron, everything's shut down in Greenville.
00:16Yeah, good morning, guys. You absolutely got that right. This place is pretty much a ghost town
00:20right now. I probably haven't seen a car in well over a half an hour, which is a good thing. That
00:25tells me that a lot of the folks took those warnings seriously and the severity of the
00:29situation that's going to come with this ice storm. Now, since I've been standing here,
00:33there have been several snow plows that have gone by on a much smaller scale because, again,
00:38we're not in the Midwest. We're not in New England. They get cold weather down here on occasions,
00:42but they don't get the type of winter weather that we typically see in the northern states.
00:47So, therefore, they have their little less resources, and those are going to be stretched
00:51then, especially over the next 24 to 36 hours as this ice storm really starts to ramp up.
00:58And, Aaron, also, where would you go ahead? No, no, please. No.
01:01Well, Ari and I were just talking. It's 24 degrees right now in Greenville. What were you going to
01:06ask? Nope. I was going to say you just said that. Yeah. And there's also a concern, and we've seen
01:11this before, about pipes bursting just because of the cold. So, that's another thing that the
01:18residents have to worry about. Yeah, that's absolutely correct. And on top of that, this wind isn't
01:24going to do us any favor either. It's a little bit gusty right now, and it's just making that cold
01:29cut through the skin so much more brutally than what we typically see with normal cold weather.
01:34And what's going to happen is when these trees start to get weighed down with a lot of that ice,
01:38it's not going to take much to start knocking down those tree branches. You throw in gusts even
01:4320 to 30 miles an hour, that's going to cause even more significant problems than they're already
01:48going to be dealing with today. But, you know, it's one of the things that's the good news.
01:52There was a little bit of panic buying going on yesterday that tells me that a lot of the folks
01:56are taking this very seriously. And I think everyone is kind of sitting on the edge of their
02:00seats seeing just how bad it's going to get here. They all are kind of sitting there waiting and
02:05wondering if their power is going to go out, how long the cold is going to last. And I hate to say
02:09it, but there also could be a flash freeze potential behind all this for any of that melt that does
02:14occur during that brief warm-up followed by that cold surge that's going to come in behind the storm
02:19system. I feel like you said it, you know, the South's so used to severe weather, even tropical
02:24weather, but they take the cold so seriously because they don't get it all the time. Storm
02:28Chaser Aaron Dringsby, thanks so much for joining us. We'll continue to check in with you this weekend.
