Extreme Meteorologist Reed Timmer reported from Kansas City, Missouri, Jan. 24, providing updates on hazardous winter storm conditions impacting the area.
Transcript
00:00All right, Reed, you're in Kansas City. Tell us what's going on.
00:03Yeah, we have round one of the snowfall that has arrived here in Kansas City.
00:08We've got about one to three inches of fluffy snow out here.
00:10You can see these large dendrites falling.
00:13That's why I've got my snow goggles on here.
00:15And the roads are definitely starting to deteriorate out here.
00:18It's been a banded snow so far.
00:20So it'll be pretty heavy, fluffy, big flakes coming down, and then a little bit of a wall.
00:25But it has been picking up a little bit as we're getting closer to sunrise here in the Kansas City area.
00:30One to three inches expected with this first wave, and then more expected tonight as the Vortmax ejects.
00:36And that could bring some heavier snow in here.
00:38But the heavier totals should be south of I-70.
00:41Temperature is minus one degrees here.
00:44The hair on my beard is definitely freezing up as I breathe in through my nose.
00:48Definitely a freezing shot out here.
00:50So definitely very cold in Kansas City, minus one degrees Fahrenheit.
00:54But it is a lot warmer than it was in Minnesota, where I left last night.
00:58Minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit out there when I left Minnesota.
01:02That's the Arctic air that's feeding this storm.
01:05And you know what, Reid?
01:06Extreme meteorologists, Reid Timmer, they think of you for severe weather.
01:10But from your experience, let's talk about how extreme this storm is.
01:17Well, for this area, it's very extreme.
01:19Areas like Oklahoma, up into southern Missouri, Arkansas, they're not used to this type of snowfall
01:26and the ice that's happening, the sleet, the freezing rain to the south of that.
01:30So it definitely is impactful.
01:31Even though not as much fell in the Oklahoma City area overnight and up into Kansas City
01:36because a little bit of dry air filtered in.
01:38There's still a bigger wave coming tonight with this system.
01:41It's a double-barreled system here for the southern plains.
01:44But definitely a very impactful snowfall for this region here in the southern plains.
01:49Are you planning to stay in Kansas City or do you have other travel plans?
01:53Although I know travel not really advised.
01:56Oh, I have other plans.
01:57I'm going to be dropping south to the ice storm zone, probably southern Arkansas near the Louisiana border later on.
02:03But I'm going to wait for that second wave that comes tonight.
02:06And I'm going to be covering the freezing rain down there.
02:08So I'm going to be dropping south right after this.
02:10I'll likely be moving into some heavier snow down to the south of I-70, a little closer to the I-40 area.
02:16And then I'm in a position where that warm nose will be a little bit more prominent for that pure freezing rain down there.
02:22I've got the vehicle that can handle it.
02:23I've got some big grippy tires out here as well.
02:26And growing up in Michigan, I'm used to driving into winter conditions.
02:29But I'm going to take it safe and slow and head down where there's a more prominent warm nose
02:34near the Arkansas-Louisiana border and the northwestern Mississippi later on today.
