00:00European leaders signaled they could engage with President Donald Trump's proposed Board of Peace,
00:05but only if its role is narrowly focused on addressing the conflict in Gaza.
00:10The European Union's Foreign Policy Chief Kaya Kala says the bloc supports international efforts to bring peace to the Middle East,
00:18adding that any new initiative must align with existing international law.
00:22She also said the EU expects the Board to follow the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
00:32However, European Council President Antonio Costa said there were serious doubts about the Board's scope,
00:38its governance structure and its compatibility with the UN Charter.
00:42Those concerns are reinforced by the Board's founding charter, which sets a $1 billion fee for permanent membership.
00:48While the initiative is presented as a mechanism to oversee Gaza's reconstruction,
00:53the charter does not restrict its mandate to the Palestinian territory.
