00:00A UN Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages was vetoed by the U.S. on Thursday, the sixth time the U.S. has done so regarding the Gaza war at the U.N.'s most powerful body.
00:16All 14 other members of the Security Council voted in favor of the resolution, but the U.S. envoy said the text did not go far enough in condemning Hamas or recognizing Israel's right to defend itself.

00:49Council members ignored when the United States made clear that this resolution was unacceptable.
00:54The vote came just days before the annual gathering of world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly, where major U.S. allies, including the U.K. and France, are expected to recognize an independent Palestinian state.
01:08The move, a largely symbolic measure, is strongly opposed by Israel and the U.S.
