00:00That's not even the interceptions, those turnovers.
00:03And we understand what C.J. did and the offense did
00:06because Woody Marks had a turnover in this game as well.
00:09There were several turnovers in those first two playoff games.
00:13But that for you is still not the most concerning thing
00:17about this offense moving forward.
00:19Not at all.
00:20I've said it for two weeks now that we've had to watch C.J. Stroud struggle.
00:24It's not about the interceptions.
00:26It's not about the fumbles.
00:27It's not about any singular play in a vacuum.
00:30The most concerning thing about the Texans offense right now
00:33is to communicate.
00:37The inability to communicate 20-plus games into a season.
00:41And I'm just talking about on an average level,
00:43just a go out and don't lose the game kind of level.
00:47Go out and be on the same page.
00:49I'm not even talking about the advanced details
00:52and the advanced communication that's necessary
00:55when you've got this creative, exotic offense.
00:57I'm talking about the base communication.
01:00Here is C.J. Stroud when asked what this offense can improve on this offseason.

01:09I think just like the small things, like the communication things,
01:12getting out the huddle in the game is hard, making it more simple.
01:15And I just think doing the ordinary things time and time over and over again
01:18because that's what these games come down to, being in the playoffs.
01:21I've said it many a time, the fact that the head coach,
01:26the offensive coordinator, and the quarterback,
01:29the fact that we are 20-plus games into season one
01:32and we're still talking about basic communication.
01:35Because, again, we're not talking about some exotic creative offense.
01:39From an NFL standard, they don't move much.
01:42From an NFL standard, there's not a lot of exotic formations.
01:45There's not exotic concepts and football scheme going on
01:50with the Houston Texans.
01:51It's very basic.
01:52And we are still, after losing in the second round of the playoffs,
01:56when asked about how this offense can get better in the offseason,
02:00the immediate response is communication.
02:03And when it's followed up by getting out of the huddle on time,
02:06you know it is as elementary and as base of a communication
02:10as we're talking about here.
02:11Oh, no, no.
02:12It is scary having been such a problem for the Texans
02:17and that they keep talking about it every time they're interviewed.
02:22And here's why, Ron.
02:23The inability to communicate, right,
02:25sounds like something that's very elementary,
02:30maybe not a big problem.
02:31But if you look at what happens when you don't have the ability to communicate,
02:35I would argue that the source of C.J. Stroud panicking
02:41and C.J. Stroud being rattled and overwhelmed
02:44that we see in the last two playoff games,
02:47I will argue that the number one reason why that is
02:51is there is a lack of communication.
02:54And, again, it's on a very base level,
02:56whether that's the OC communicating to him,
02:58whether that's him reading and processing what's on his wristband
03:02and or that's him communicating the play,
03:05relaying the play call in the huddle,
03:07or them getting to the line of scrimmage
03:09and not being able to communicate as a group
03:12with what the defense is doing.
03:15I believe that the communication is the problem.
03:18The byproduct is the quarterback that's rattled,
03:21the quarterback that's overwhelmed,
03:22the quarterback that's uncomfortable, right?
03:24So the communication there is a problem.
03:26When you look overall as just an overall offense
03:30and how this offense is functioning and how it's executing,
03:33the lack of communication, we saw it this week.
03:37I think two of the three timeouts were wasted
03:39during the game because of communication.
03:42You end up wasting timeouts.
03:43You rush to the line of scrimmage.
03:44You end up with penalties.
03:46You end up with a quarterback that doesn't even have
03:48the thought of turning around and looking
03:51and making sure that the defensive tackle that's in it full back
03:54is set tight end.
03:56You got a veteran tight end that doesn't even look
03:59to make sure that that defensive tackle is set
04:00before he moves because you're rushing.
04:03Everything is late, so all of a sudden,
04:05you're wasting timeouts and you're having to eat
04:07these penalties that we keep hearing our execution
04:11and technique and fundamentals and all that kind of thing.
04:15But the root of that is communication, right?
04:18And then when you really get down to it,
04:21there's two things, Ron, that bother me the most about this.
04:24Is one, the people that are in charge of the communication.
04:29The two people that are most heavily involved
04:31in the communication are the two most important people
04:34other than the head coach in the organization.
04:37It's your offensive coordinator and it's your play caller.
04:39Who do you put this on more?
04:40I don't know.
04:41I don't know.
04:42I have, I don't know.
04:45There's so many intricate details that it could be either.
04:50It could be CJ does not have the ability to communicate clearly
04:53when he's asked to do more and have more control of the offense.
04:55He just doesn't do it.
04:56He don't process fast enough.
04:58He doesn't communicate clearly and concisely.
05:01It could be Nick Kaley is stuttering in the damn mic.
05:04It could be Nick Kaley's taking 10 seconds, 15 seconds
05:06to figure out what play he wants in the game.
05:10It could be that Nick Kaley doesn't know how to communicate
05:14what personnel he wants in a timely fashion
05:16so that he can then call the play.
05:18Like it could be any of those things.
05:20But as a Texans fan, why I'm so passionate about it is
05:24it's either the offensive coordinator or the quarterback
05:26and it should be neither.
05:28You've got a guy that was meant to be,
05:31that was thought to be a top 10 quarterback in this league
05:33in year three.
05:33We should have these problems.
05:36A play caller that has been a position coach
05:38and been on everybody's short list of being a play caller
05:40for the last five years and your general,
05:44your Nick Casario and Dabiko Rhymes,
05:47this is our guy, this is our guy,
05:48and they're just, this is the guy that we're hiring,
05:50this is why we're hiring, we're confident in him.
05:52He shouldn't have basic communication issues.
05:53It caused them to have to blow two timeouts.
05:55Absolutely, in a playoff game.
05:56That they were traded.
05:57But this has been a problem all year long.
05:58We've heard, and this ain't my problem,
05:59we've heard it from them, Ron.
06:01And here's the other problem.
06:02Here's the other problem, real quick.
06:03I don't believe there's a quick fix.
06:05If your quarterback is not able to communicate,
06:09process and communicate, if it's him, there's no fix.
06:12You've got to figure out a different system,
06:14a different way to call plays and run plays.
06:17I don't remember it being this bad with the quarterback prior to that.
06:20Correct.
06:21But if you remember correctly, back then,
06:22it was the quarterback doesn't have any responsibilities.
06:25All he's doing is a robot.
06:26Call the play that slow it gives you and go up there and run it.
06:29You don't have any control.
06:30You don't have to think about nothing.
06:31Just run, do what I can tell you to do.
06:32It's not easy.
06:33Now he's been given more responsibility,
06:34and all of a sudden it's a problem, right?
06:36And I'm not saying that.
06:37I'm just giving one scenario.
06:38What the difference is.
06:39The other scenario is the guy that you hired is a tight ends coach.
06:44He's not a play caller, right?
06:46So doing these kind of things, as we said before,
06:49this ain't about being a good coach.
06:51This is about having great feel.
06:52This is about having great communication, great management skills.
06:55This is a different animal at the play caller.
06:58Again, the point is, it's one or the other.
07:01They're so critical to the organization's success
07:03that it's unacceptable, and I don't believe there's a quick fix,
07:07or else it would have been fixed week eight.
07:09I don't believe it'd still be a problem today
