00:00First, let's get to it. The college football title at Hard Rock Stadium goes to the Indiana
00:05Hoosiers. It was a tight game from start to finish. They needed a long touchdown run
00:11on a quarterback draw from Fernando Mendoza in order to win this game. It was certainly a battle
00:18including a heck of a comeback by Miami to stay in this game. Kurt Signetti was hired several years
00:24ago, becomes a champion in college football, and certainly is relishing in the idea of capturing
00:30the ring, also giving credit to Miami for a hard-fought battle. Okay, hard-fought game,
00:36give a lot of credit to Miami. It was a real gut check. We found a way. It's credit to our guys'
00:42resiliency to find a way to get that done. It's a great thing. Indiana won the national championship
00:50two years into our tenure. You do it with people and a plan. Can't say enough about our senior
00:57leadership and the people we have in the locker room and the people we have on our staff and our
01:02strength and conditioning staff, support staff, and the commitment we've received from President
01:07Witt and Scott Dolson. I would like to say our NIL is nowhere near what people think it is,
01:12so you can throw that out. And this team really overcame a lot on the road in a lot of tight
01:24games and found a way to get it done, and we're 16-0, and I guess we're 27-2 since Indiana,
01:32but we're 16-0. National champions at Indiana University, which I know a lot of people thought
01:40was never possible. It probably is one of the greatest sports stories of all time,
01:46but it's all because of these guys and the staff. So proud of them, and it's a great night.
01:53It is a remarkable story, even more so that Fernando Mendoza going into the game,
01:59Heisman Trophy Award winner, came big in the biggest moment with Indiana needing a touchdown
02:04to secure the win. Mendoza, on a draw, rushed 15 yards up the middle, sort of looking like
02:10his idol Tim Tebow in for the touchdown. Here's Mendoza on that run that sealed the game.
02:17For Fernando, it's Pat Forty from Sports Illustrated. If you could go through the
02:20quarterback draw as well, first of all, the timeout, and did you know that was,
02:24you're going to go for it, and that would be the play call, and then the actual play itself.
02:29Yeah, a big concept that we've really had on ourselves this year has always been on ourselves.
02:34Whether it's preseason, no one thinks we can make it. Whether it's figuring it out in situations
02:39like Oregon, Penn State, and Iowa, we've always figured it out. And whenever Coach Cignetti,
02:43Coach Shanahan, you know, they called that play, we knew, hey, we're going to better ourselves one
02:47more time in the biggest stage of the game. And at that point, you know, I took the drop,
02:51and it wasn't the perfect coverage for it, but I trust my lineman, and everybody in that entire
02:56offense, an entire team, had a gritty performance today, and we're all putting our bodies on the
03:00line. So it's the least I could do for my brothers.
03:01Mendoza, obviously a lock to be the number one overall pick in the draft. The Raiders have that
03:06pick coming up in a couple of months. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes had a fantastic season as well.
03:12Here's Mario Cristobal on that coming to an end last night.
03:15I would like to recognize these three young men and their teammates for the best thing that's
03:23happened to Miami and the University of Miami in over two decades. And it's not the result we wanted.
03:29Credit to Indiana. They're a great football team. But to these guys right here, I couldn't be more
03:34proud to be associated with them. I love them. They're absolutely incredible human beings,
03:41competitors, resilient. And I want to thank them and the rest of their teammates. And it's a tough one.
03:48Tough one to have to eat, but we will. And that's it.
03:52Yeah, obviously for it to end like that is hard. It's really tough. Especially to battle the way that
04:01we did in the second half after not coming out too strong in the first half. But again, for a group
04:09that has faced so much adversity throughout the season to face adversity early on again and battle
04:15our way back to even have that opportunity to have a chance to win the game at the end says a lot about
04:22this team and about us and super proud of these guys and super thankful for them. And it really
04:27hurts and it's hard, you know. Beck had a great college football playoff, but did throw an
04:32interception that sealed the game. All right. National Football League hirings. New head coaches
04:37in Tennessee and Miami. We'll start off with the Titans. Former Jets head coach Robert Sala, who now
04:44has spent some time in San Francisco back as the defensive coordinator, is getting his second chance to be
04:49the head coach. He will be named the head coach of the Titans as soon as tomorrow. And the Miami
04:54Dolphins announced yesterday that they're hiring Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Halfley as their
04:59new head coach. He comes over with the general manager who was just hired recently. Also Denver
05:04Broncos preparing this weekend for life without Bo Nix have opened the practice window for running back
05:10J.K. Dobbins remains to be seen if he will be activated and play for Denver this week. In the NBA last night,
05:17a crushing blow to the Warriors hopes to getting deep in the playoffs. They've lost Jimmy Butler
05:21for the rest of the season. He suffered a torn ACL. Butler will require surgery and obviously will be
05:27out the remainder of this year and who knows how much longer. In the NBA last night, Shea Gilgis
05:32Alexander had 30 points. Oklahoma City crushed the Cavs 136-104 as five and a half point favorites.
05:39It certainly was the offense that came through for them last night. Here's Mark Dagno on the explosion
05:45from his guys. Yeah, pretty good. Obviously, the shot making makes it look better always. So
05:51we got hot, you know, especially down the stretch, obviously. So that had something to do with it. But
05:56I thought our process was pretty good all night just in terms of the sharpness of the spacing,
06:01which, like I said before, the game is critical against a team that's got the rim protection and
06:06size that they do around the basket. So guys did a great job of executing. And then we finished a lot
06:11of plays tonight. I don't know if there's any particular phase or you could argue they shot
06:18the heck out of it. We didn't. But, you know, defense, offense, I just think they show why
06:27they're champions. They dominated us in every phase. I felt like physicality, you know, shot
06:36making turnover battle. I do think we rebounded decently. That was maybe if we take a positive.
06:45The mini slump for the New York Knicks extends beyond a mini slump. Now two and nine in their
06:49last 11 games. Ten point favorites losing to the Mavericks. 114 to 97. How about that? Mike Brown
06:57has been giving a lot of heat to the team in postgame and that continued last night.
07:02Bottom line is we got to lock in. We got to do our job for 48 minutes. They scored 75
07:12points in the first half. And at halftime, you know, we usually do the clips and talk about
07:19technical X's and O's and all that, you know, crap that coaches do and teams do. There was
07:25nothing to be said at halftime except for lock in and do your, excuse me on that, do your job.
07:32Yeah, I thought the group was, uh, really good. Um, this evening when you talk about,
07:37um, just the pace, I thought set the tone for us, uh, make or miss. We were playing fast and then,
07:43um, you know, Christie came out. Uh, he was really, really good for us, uh, behind the art,
07:48but also defensively as we talked about, but I thought that first group got us off to a really
07:53good start on the offense and defensive end. Exciting game in case you were watching basketball,
07:59as opposed to the college national championship. The Pistons beat the Celtics 104 to 103. Detroit
08:04was two and a half point favorites. They don't cover that. Jalen Brown had a shot to win it in
08:07the end, but missed. And also Victor Wembayama had a huge game as the Spurs take care of the Jazz
08:13123 to 110. Spurs end up not covering the spread 16 and a half point favorites. The Jazz are one of the
08:21worst teams in the NBA. Victor Wembayama, 33 points in the game last night. And welcome back to
08:26Newswire here on sports grid. Make sure you catch Dustin Gawker, sub stack, subscribe to it for you
08:31want to know the emerging prediction market stories sometimes before they even happen. Dustin's all
08:37over those. And he also joins us here exclusively on Newswire here on sports grid to go over the
08:42latest in the landscape there as well. So Dustin, thanks again for making some time for us here on
08:47the show, uh, college football season, Dustin, it comes to an end, but not without some controversy.
08:52Of course, whenever you have college football's two teams playing for a championship,
08:55you're going to get a lot of words back and forth here. No surprise here that college football
09:00seemingly simply okay with the idea that sports betting is legal across the country. But now once
09:05prediction markets have sort of taken over, it feels like the NCAA is giving that pause as far as
09:11any partnerships or involvement and even just having them available. Yeah. The NCAA always has a
09:17complicated relationship with, with sports betting. It's of course, they were the title litigant in the,
09:23in the fall of the federal ban. They were trying to stop New Jersey from offering it. They just don't
09:28like sports betting, right? I think they understand that people bet on their, their games and it probably
09:33drives engagement. But at the end of the day, they see this as a threat. We know all the scandals that
09:38have happened around, uh, college sports recently, especially in college basketball. And, uh, I think
09:43the NCAA just sees this as a threat. There's there, they see this as a new way to gamble on things,
09:48and they're not quite sure that this is what they want moving forward because they don't have a whole
09:53lot of control over it, at least in the, the regulated sports betting industry. They have a
09:56little bit of a measure of control, right? They, they know where it's going to happen. They, they get
10:00a little bit of what they want, a give and take with the sports books with the prediction markets.
10:04I don't think they feel like they have that. So yeah, we've had NCA president Charlie Baker come out.
10:09Um, there's been very loud about this issue recently. They said, he sent a letter to the commodity
10:13futures trading commission, which oversees the prediction markets like Calci and Poly market.
10:18And basically said he's asking Congress to, to, to do something about this or for the CFTC to kind
10:23of reign this in. They doesn't want profits. Ideally he would probably like for college
10:27betting to go away entirely versus prediction markets. And I don't think that's terribly likely.
10:32We even had the new head of the CFTC this morning come out and basically said he wants fewer rules,
10:37not more. So the idea that, that they're going to hit, they're going to wall off college
10:41prop betting or college betting in entirety, not real likely for the prediction markets. Uh,
10:45I mean the, the, the best case, I mean the best way for this all to get shut down is going to be
10:50through the courts and that may or may not happen in the longterm. So right now, uh, I just don't
10:54see this, this going away, at least on the college level of prediction markets, you're going to be
10:58able to bet on March madness at prediction markets and they haven't really gotten in the props yet
11:02either. So we'll see if they really want to get it. Like we'll see if Cal, she wants to do that
11:06moving forward and other prediction markets. I think they will. And we'll see obviously here in the,
11:10in the coming weeks and months and leading into next football season, how far they go in allowing
11:15more and more granular markets on, on football. And expansion is a story that we talk about a ton
11:22and it feels like we have another one here. Uh, Robin hood, who of course, no stranger to this
11:27market as well, uh, seemingly feels like a parlays are a part of their future here. And when you say
11:33the word parlay that does involve sports betting, but apparently according to Robin hood, uh, maybe
11:38something a little bit different here, but this is going to get a lot of attention for folks again,
11:42and these non-legal markets to be able to do something that everybody across the country
11:47probably loves more than anything else, which is throwing down one of these parlays in a dream.
11:51Yeah. I mean, the top level is Robin hood launched parlays, custom parlays like you would do on any
11:57sports book, like better put a bunch of things together for a higher payout. Uh, they're called combos.
12:02Uh, that's what the prediction markets like to call them. They are functionally no different from,
12:05from parlays. You, you know, you take a bunch of outcomes, you put them together,
12:09small amount of money, win a lot of money, uh, possibly if you win it like a lottery ticket. So,
12:14um, this is, you know, this is where it's all heading to try to replicate the sports spending
12:19experience. That's where Robin hood and, uh, and all the prediction markets are going.
12:23And Robin hood kind of stays in the background. We're talking, we always talk about Calci and
12:26Polymark, but Robin hood drives most of the volume that's happening at Calci. So
12:30Robin hood really is right now, I'd say the end boss of all of this. They're the ones that,
12:34you know, they have millions of users. They're serving all of this and now they're going to be
12:37able to do again, custom parlays, um, much like you'd see at any sports book. It'll,
12:42so it'll be interesting. They're also gearing up. They did some M and a at the end of last year,
12:46they're going to be running their own prediction market and not just necessarily using Calci's
12:50markets to power its prediction market offering. So this is a big move for them. And, you know,
12:55I think they're the, you know, we, again, we talk about these consumer facing brands and I'd say
12:59Robin hood is, is, you know, best positioned to kind of scale this up and become the leader of
13:04this industry. Uh, you know, in the short to medium term, um, you know, again, we're talking
13:09about Calci and Calci volume and billions of dollars being traded, uh, every, every day and
13:14every week. But, um, you know, I say Robin hood with this move into parlays and how seriously it's
13:19taking this, this is, this is one of the top, uh, companies that we're going to be watching
13:23in the prediction market space moving forward. Live golf, certainly no stranger to taking money
13:31from different organizations, which is kind of how they got their notoriety here. And I'm sure the
13:36PGA tour has a very close eye on this next story, which is a golfer. And arguably you can make the case
13:43top five, top 10 golfer in the world. He's certainly proven at the last couple of years, Bryson DeChambeau,
13:48a partner with Calci. So, you know, obviously I would think as long as Bryson is involved with
13:54Calci, he can do this, but let's also not forget. I mean, Dustin Bryson is going to play at the
13:59masters and the U S open. And, uh, I mean, and what is he allowed to have signage of these things
14:06there or something on his shirt, something on his hat. I mean, this is what I got to follow next month.
14:11Yeah. We're, we're going to find out, but yeah, I mean, the, the top level is, uh, a player getting of
14:16any major sport, getting involved with a prediction market, something that we haven't
14:19really seen now. We, of course, former players often involved with sports books. We know LeBron
14:23has a deal with draft Kings. Uh, you know, he's not do it. He's not hawking NBA picks or betting on
14:28the NBA, but he's partnered with draft Kings, but this is definitely a different level. And, um, it's
14:34notable. He's, you know, he's like you said, he's one of the most recognizable golfers on the planet.
14:38This is not, this is not nothing. A few notable things is he's had a relationship with underdog sports as
14:43well, which is also in prediction markets. And he just cut a commercial like a couple of weeks ago
14:48about prediction markets at underdog. So this is a quick turnaround to do now Cal. She, um,
14:52he's been partnered with sports books before. Um, you know, it's going to be, it's really
14:56interesting to see where this goes. The PGA tour has come out and said, and reporting with front
15:00office sports that they can, their, their golfers will not do prediction markets deals. Uh, the NFL
15:06has said similarly, and you know, this embrace of, I guess you look at live and it's like,
15:10they're a little more out there and a little more, a little more, they do things a little
15:14differently and they, they, they let this happen and it's, it'll be interesting to see how much
15:18adoption we get of, of players. And the big part is, yes, again, this is taking out like,
15:22like the last story is outside of the structure of regulated sports betting. We like, if a player
15:27is saying go better prediction markets, like that's a, that's an interesting one, right? Because
15:31this is not the same as regulated sports betting and how, uh, how safe it is. So we'll see how
15:36it goes and if other players jump on board. All right, Dustin, as always, great stuff. We'll
15:41subscribe to the sub stack and learn more as we continue. Thanks again for coming on Newswire.
15:44I appreciate it. Cheers.
