00:00And naturally we'll get into maybe the biggest story that we've seen in college football in June, in a long
00:07time, because we have a player that could be headed toward the NFL's supplemental draft, which is certainly a rarity.
00:14That and a whole lot more on this Tuesday edition of the show, but before we go any further, let's
00:20get started with Caffeinated Joe.
00:25All right, Craig. Well, let's talk about the news that broke last night involving Texas Tech's football quarterback, their professional
00:35handicapping quarterback.
00:37In fact, Brendan Sorsby, who turns out that, well, after all the moral outrage and the finger pointing and the
00:45sky is falling, screaming over the last week.
00:48Well, we officially learned that Brendan Sorsby will not be playing a single down for the Red Raiders this fall,
00:56because while it appears that Sorsby decided the NFL is probably the best place for him at this point.
01:04He announced that he is withdrawing his lawsuit, walking away from Lubbock and planning to enter the NFL supplemental draft
01:13next week before the June 22nd deadline.
01:16And on cue, the social media moral police are out there thanking the football gods celebrating in the streets because,
01:25well, they truly believe this decision is going to save college football.
01:31I don't think so, because the moral police can all rest easy today, knowing that while those lawsuit threats and
01:39those coordinated boycotts, while they reaped exactly what they wanted, they literally browbeat a 22-year-old pawn of the
01:48system into giving up $5 million that he was contracted for in NIL money to save the sport.
01:55Go figure.
01:57Sorsby does walk away, though, with a few bucks in his pocket from tech that they already paid him, but
02:02he secures a ticket to the league, probably out of sheer legal exhaustion.
02:07But here's the reality of what just happened.
02:10Sorsby dropping this suit didn't fix a damn thing at NCAA.
02:15All it did was allow you to keep kicking the can down the road on actually implementing meaningful draft guidelines
02:24or portal rules that would have prevented this entire debacle in the first place.
02:29Let us not forget, it is the NCAA that allowed this wild, wild west environment in college sports to exist
02:37because of their own historic greed and draconian rules forcing the system into the shadows to begin with.
02:45They spent decades making multi-millions of dollars off the backs of football and basketball players.
02:52And now, well, now they want to play the heroes because the kid's lawyer has finally backed down under conference
02:58pressure.
02:59So congratulations.
03:00College football is officially saved, I guess.
03:04Or at least, Craig, until the next 26-year-old father of two decides that he is done playing basketball
03:10overseas and signs a multi-million dollar NIL deal with LSU.
03:16At the very least, what this does, and Joe's take is well said, at the very least, what this does
03:23is it puts the end of the idea that you can play college football after making a bet.
03:29I mean, that is definitely going to be the case, whether a dollar or a thousand dollars.
03:34But we are far from done, I think, with this and other stories, which includes yesterday, as Joe is alluding
03:40to.
03:40In case you missed it, it appeared yesterday that we had come to a head on this whole story.
03:45Now, Brendan Sorsby, for those of you who are unfamiliar, and you may be, I think Joe just eloquently pointed
03:50it out, but he played at Texas Tech.
03:52He ended up allegedly betting on sports.
03:54A couple of props, wasn't a lot of money, but that's not the point.
03:57The point is, it's illegal.
03:59So the Big 12 filed a 47-page federal complaint Monday to go against a ruling that was done in
04:06court in Texas that did allow Sorsby to play college football this season.
04:12Once this came out yesterday, as Joe said, the red tape just appeared to be too much for Sorsby and
04:18his legal team.
04:19And inevitably, they decided, as they say, Joe, the juice probably not worth the squeeze.
04:24So Sorsby now will enter into the NFL's supplemental draft.
04:29There have been other players, Joe, taken in the supplemental draft, but maybe not to this degree.
04:35We've seen Terrell Pryor be selected.
04:37I think that was one of the most recent ones in the third round.
04:40And so the way that this works, for those of you who are unfamiliar, is teams put in bids as
04:45to what they believe the player is worth in terms of draft pick compensation.
04:50And whoever submits the highest bid, that's the pick that you lose in the next NFL draft.
04:58Hopefully, that's a good summary for those of you.
05:00Now, Joe, I would ask you this before we move on.
05:03Do you think that anybody puts a first-round tag on Brendan Sorsby?
05:11Because here is the dynamic as to what we have learned in college football.
05:14If you can throw the football well in the last 10 years, you're going in the first round.
05:19That has changed significantly from where you and I grew up in the 90s and 2000s.
05:24There were guys in the fourth and the fifth.
05:26Anybody who's worth squat goes in the first round as a quarterback in the NFL draft.
05:32So I throw it back to you.
05:34This is going to be bettable, funnily enough, on FanDuel, DraftKings, and the prediction markets.
05:39Do you think he's a first-round supplemental pick for any team next month?
05:46Well, I'll tell you this.
05:48Based on talent and under any normal circumstances here, Craig, 6'3", 235 pounds,
05:56he would have been a potential first-rounder in the 2026 draft had he actually played at Texas Tech here.
06:04Whether he had the on-field, off-field issues or not, he would have been considered that.
06:10I would most say his game resembles Jackson Dart and what you saw from him at Ole Miss, very similar.
06:19But, you know, he played back-to-back years at Cincinnati.
06:21He never really went up or was tested against the type of competition that he would have seen this year
06:28at Texas Tech.
06:29Having said that, we also haven't seen anybody outside, and you mentioned Terrell Pryor in 2011,
06:35who, by the way, was also, you know, heaven forbid, what, he got a tattoo, I think,
06:40and completely the NCAA lowered the hammer on Trestleman and him like they were a pariah there.
06:46So, but I think Dave Brown in 1992 was the last first-rounder that was given up in the supplemental
06:54draft.
06:54It doesn't happen often, but I can tell you this, there's enough quarterback-needy teams,
07:00absolutely, somebody's giving up a pick to go get him.
07:03It won't likely be a first, but he will be on an NFL roster.
07:08Yeah, and also remember, this is like an auction.
07:11So, as an example, if let's just use the Jets and use the Cardinals,
07:16because those are two teams that, I would say, fair to say potentially could be interested.
07:20If the Jets think that the Cardinals will offer a first, then they have to put a bid in for
07:27the first, you know?
07:28So, that's kind of the way that this works.
07:30That's why he may go a little bit higher than we anticipate.
07:34I'm with you, Joe.
07:35I don't think a first-round pick is what he's worth, but I think a first-round pick is going
07:39to get this done.
07:40I do.
07:40I think someone is going to have to do that in order to get him.
07:43Somebody in the NFL, who probably would have taken him at the back end of the first round,
07:47says, hey, here's our opportunity to do it this year.
07:50Okay, we spent a lot of time on this, so I am sorry, Tommy, but it's a big story.
07:55Arch Manning is looking like he is not closing the door on returning in 2027.
08:02Texas coach Steve Sarkeesian says he could potentially be back.
08:06He loves college football.
08:08He's potentially the number one or number two overall pick in the NFL draft,
08:11but, folks, we've seen this play out before.
08:13Meanwhile, Brendan Sorsby's story has percolated down to Deion Sanders,
08:19who says that basically at this time, it's one of those situations where Sanders has not necessarily ruled out the
08:28idea of facing him,
08:30but now that he knows he won't, it's one of those deals in the NIL and understands that it's kind
08:35of part of the game
08:36and naturally said that this is something that he's addressed with his own team
08:42and not going to take it and do it any further.
08:45All right, NBA draft coming up.
08:47Darren Peterson, one week away.
08:49The race for the number one pick heats up.
08:51Joe, it looks like he potentially could be the guy.
08:54Welcome back to the early line here on Sports Grid.
08:56Our top story of the day, Brendan Sorsby, who was warned yesterday by the Big 12,
09:03hey, it's time for you to walk back everything that happened to you.
09:08And the judge ruled that Sorsby could play this upcoming season in college football.
09:13That is no longer going to be the case.
09:15So let me give you the quick chronology.
09:16Sorsby is a quarterback at Texas Tech University.
09:19He bets on sports.
09:20He gets caught.
09:21He's told he's ineligible.
09:23And a judge decides, yeah, never mind about that, NCAA.
09:26You could play next season.
09:27So yesterday, the Big 12 filed a 47-page federal complaint
09:30seeking the right to sanction Texas Tech if they played Sorsby this season.
09:34And then late last night, Joe, Sorsby and Texas Tech agreed.
09:39Probably not a good idea.
09:40And now he's going to be headed toward the NFL's supplemental draft,
09:44which I believe begins in July.
09:48Yeah, I mean, the whole the arc of all of this has been just just craziness.
09:54And it all leads back to the same thing that the, you know, the NCAA for years made
10:00multi-millions of dollars off the backs of these players.
10:04And all the players were asking for when all of this started, Greg, was just, you know,
10:09don't don't throw me out of college and tell me I can't play because somebody bought me a
10:14sandwich at a local deli.
10:16And it turned in and morphed into this now, which is the wild, wild west with no control
10:22over anything.
10:24And it's not like he broke the law.
10:28So the judge said, you're good to go.
10:30So the NCAA just keeps kicking this down the road.
10:35And now we're at a point where we're all celebrating.
10:38Great.
10:38He won't play for Texas Tech.
10:40How does that help the situation at all right now?
10:43Now, the answer is it doesn't.
10:46It just feels like it's going to be more of the same.
10:48If it's not Soresby, it's going to be somebody else at some point.
10:53And for those unfamiliar, the supplemental draft is where teams decide and place a value on a
10:59player based on the 2027 NFL draft.
11:02And they submit a bid.
11:03And the team that essentially bids the highest draft pick ends up getting the player.
11:07So Soresby could be a first round or second round pick, as most projections say.
11:11Again, we'll wait to see how this pans out.
11:14Arch Manning could return to the Longhorns in 2027.
11:16He's supposed to be a bona fide first round pick in the 2027 NFL draft.
11:21But right now, Steve Sarkeesian isn't closing the door on that, saying that he could potentially
11:26return.
11:27Meanwhile, Deion Sanders, the head coach of Colorado, also weighed in on the Soresby scandal,
11:32saying that, quote, somebody's gambling on a sport they're playing.
11:36You don't think there's something wrong with that.
11:39Sanders, of course, has been very heavily involved in the NIL cap and certainly would
11:44appreciate Soresby not playing against his team next season, Joe.
11:50I think that's where, I mean, the comment is mostly headed.
11:53If this was on Deion's side, he'd be like, what's the problem here?
11:56Yeah.
11:57Yeah.
11:57Or Soresby's like, you know what?
11:59I thought I want to transfer to Colorado.
12:01And then I bet you anything, the whole tone would have changed here.
12:07So, but listen, this will, in a couple of weeks, right, the supplemental draft will eventually
12:13show up.
12:13He'll be wearing an NFL uniform somewhere.
12:16And this will all be water under the bridge.
12:19Darren Peterson has met with one team and wants to meet with one team for the upcoming
12:24NBA draft.
12:25He's visited only the Washington Wizards.
12:27They have the number one overall pick.
12:29As Joe alluded to, at any point during the season, it would have appeared that Peterson
12:34would have been the number one pick.
12:35But it looks like A.J.
12:36DeBansa from BYU, he led the nation in scoring with 25 points a game, could be the number one
12:42overall pick.
12:43And the problem is, Joe, as you know, the one location that players, and unfortunately, I
12:49don't know why, but they sometimes dread going, is Utah.
12:53And I think that's maybe the bigger story here.
12:56I mean, Utah's got a tremendous history of winning.
12:59And yeah, I mean, look, I guess the problem is we're always going back to Karl Malone and
13:04John Stockton.
13:05But it seems like they have a hard time landing free agents.
13:09Will they have a hard time landing a draft pick?
13:13Listen, this whole year, Craig, was such an anomaly where you have this many players being eligible for
13:23the draft that are actually difference makers for organizations.
13:27Usually it's the top two picks, if you're lucky, and that's, you know, the rest is just you fill
13:33out a roster with.
13:35But this year, you've got, you know, half a dozen guys that are going to change the trajectory
13:40of franchises here.
13:42I mean, these are foundational franchise players.
13:47This draft is loaded.
13:48It won't be as loaded next year.
13:50I promise you that.
13:51But this year, I think those at the top of the draft are going to get themselves some quality,
13:56long-term NBA players.
13:57The U.S. Open is this weekend at Shinnecock Hills, and certainly Scotty Scheffler is once
14:03again the favorite to take home the U.S. Open.
14:06But if you do not have your credit card or Apple Pay ready for this week, you're in some
14:12trouble here because these prices at the concessions, Joe, do not mimic the Masters.
14:17In fact, you're going to be paying $13 for a beer.
14:20You'll be paying $7 for a water.
14:22I got to tell you, Joe, this does not, you know, I know it's a lot, but this does not
14:26seem
14:26egregious.
14:27I don't know why.
14:28Like, this seems like exact, I mean, it's egregious, but it seems like this is in line
14:31with every sporting event.
14:33Well, you know, again, in Long Island, no less, on the total end of the island, Shinnecock
14:40here.
14:41And yes, and you know what?
14:42The people attending this U.S. Open will be more than happy to pay for it.
14:47So while it's nice to have the, you know, the $2 hot dog or the what?
14:51The $1 hot dog they were selling at the Masters?
14:54This ain't Costco in Shinnecock.
14:56They don't care.
14:57They are going to make the money here.
15:00And don't forget, there's a big difference between the private Augusta country club, that
15:05organization, and the USGA, which runs the U.S. Open.
15:09Two totally different worlds here.
15:12And yeah, they can afford to charge a dollar at the Masters.
15:17Team USA with a big win in their first match in the World Cup.
15:21Meanwhile, Christian Pulisic is training alone here at some point, hoping to get healthy.
15:26And I know, Joe, he'll be a big part if Team USA goes far in the World Cup.
15:30But I got to say, of all the matches we've seen thus far, maybe it is a little bit of
15:34a surprise that Team USA, one of the more impressive teams in the first week.
15:39I could not have started out any better, right?
15:41With a 4-1 win here, obviously, a goal differential is one of the deciding factors when moving forward
15:49out of the group stage.
15:50And great job by them.
15:52So if they can keep that up, yes, I think they're very much alive and well of not only
15:58winning Group D, but who knows?
16:01Quarterfinals could very well be in their near future.
16:04And he should play Friday, he says, against Seattle, but we will see.
16:08Meanwhile, Pete Crowe Armstrong is the first player in the majors this season to hit for
16:12the cycle against the Rockies.
16:14He hit a homer, a triple, a double, and single in reverse order.
16:17And the 24-year-old is the youngest Cubs player to hit for the cycle since Randy Hundley in 1966.
16:23Here is PCA on his cycle after the game.
16:28Pete, what can you say about the fight in this team?
16:32It's pretty remarkable.
16:38Yeah, I don't know.
16:39I don't know.
16:39That was...
16:41We keep doing this, and it never, like, really started...
16:43It never makes sense, so...
16:46But a win's a win.
16:47However we can get it done, I'm just so lucky to be on a team that just continues to find
16:52away, and, man, we got to do a lot of stuff better, but when we start doing stuff better
17:00and we can squeak things out like this, then we're dangerous, so...
17:04Pete Crowe Armstrong of the Cubs has had some huge comeback wins and big hits for them this
17:08season, Joe, but this Cubs team, to me, remains the strangest, hardest-to-figure team in baseball.
17:15I mean, you win 10 in a row, you lose 10 in a row, and then you're asking me to
17:19try to
17:19make a prediction on how this team is going to play this season?
17:21I got no idea.
17:23Yeah, no, and by the way, Pete, I was like, do me a favor, catch the fly balls, huh?
17:28Because he's also made some horrific errors this year that are laughably bad, so congratulations
17:35on the 4-4-4 with two RBIs, but you barely beat the Colorado Rockies, so let's not get
17:41crazy here at this point.
17:43Yeah, I think that's fair, and also the Cubs, again, will probably make trades at the deadline
17:48to help PCA and some other teams as well, but let's be clear, the Brewers are the class
17:53of that division as it stands right now.
18:02Time now for Prediction Market Edge here on the Early Line.
18:05Thanks for tuning in, Craig Misch along with Joe Ranieri.
18:07Let's get started with the story that just keeps on percolating, which is, of course,
18:12Joe, the idea that the state of Nevada has just had it with prediction markets.
18:17In fact, Nevada gaming regulators are asking a state court to hold Calci in contempt, alleging
18:22that prediction markets are continuing to access sports, election, and entertainment contracts
18:26without being allowed to because of a court order that blocks them via geofencing.
18:32Naturally, these stories, Joe, are all about money.
18:35They're making it more about licensing, but you and I know that this is just all about
18:39the fact that Nevada wants to hold all of their sports bets for their own, all of their
18:44casino bets for their own, and any money going off to anyone on the side is not something
18:49that they are used to.
18:51The only question is, Joe, in the next year or two, will Nevada and some of these states
18:58be able to make these sort of decisions?
19:00I personally think, Joe, that this is eventually headed to the Supreme Court, and that decision
19:05will be made because they're really the only ones that can really weigh in on this.
19:10And it's going to be very difficult to do because you've already got a lot of people.
19:14If you can't beat them, join them, right?
19:17And anytime you've seen the major sports books start to open up their own prediction markets,
19:23you've got a different ballgame here, Craig.
19:25I mean, this is, you know, when the DraftKings and the FanDuls of the world have now said,
19:30you know what, we're going to open up our own prediction markets, that tells you everything
19:35you need to know about the future of what's happening here.
19:38And, you know, Kelsey, I'd rather ask for forgiveness than permission.
19:41That kind of feels like what we've got going on here.
