00:00:07centerpiece as owner kirk kerkorian has acquired the major hotels that previously belonged
00:00:13to steve wynn and his group so it's good to have the mgm grand back in the boxing business and back
00:00:18on hbo and before we see the main event between floyd mayweather jr and his opponent let's tie up
00:00:25some loose ends from the boxing world over the past few weeks there has been considerable discussion
00:00:31of the subject of weight weigh-ins and it's been the tradition in the sport for a little less than
00:00:3715 years now larry for weigh-ins for major championship fights to take place the day
00:00:41before the fight as opposed to the old tradition of the day of the fight what's evolved of course
00:00:47is the occasional situation like we got three weeks ago in madison square garden where arturo gotti
00:00:51gained 19 pounds between the time he weighed in and the time when he entered the ring and it was
00:00:57man against boy against joey gamash with brutal results that disquieted a lot of people and have
00:01:03led to some consideration about new ways of dealing with the weigh-in situation well there are people
00:01:08who are concerned both about the competitive advantage or disadvantage that that entails and
00:01:14also some health questions uh to be frank and the las vegas las vegas commission has decided to be
00:01:21proactive and start to experiment with a new procedure in which they're going to weigh fighters uh just
00:01:29before the fights as they originally did before hbo even tried to do it unofficially and hope to limit
00:01:37fighters to gaining a certain amount of weight seven ten twelve pounds depending on the weight division
00:01:42the weight class the problem with that is how do you enforce it you're not going to stop a fight
00:01:49the night of the fight if a guy comes in too heavy so it's a real conundrum jim uh i and many other
00:01:56people favor going back to weigh-ins on the morning of the fight because what we see now is that a
00:02:02handful of fighters not very many over all of these years have put on so much weight that if an incident
00:02:09occurs as almost occurred in the gaddy gamash fight it could cause a tremendous uproar and and
00:02:17and boxing wants to avoid that right now although on some occasions when fighters have put on a lot of
00:02:22weight for example as corrales did before the brown fight it doesn't help them it may even hurt them
00:02:29may make them sluggish it's a public relations problem it's a health problem it's an advantage
00:02:35problem and there's no perfect solution and it's something which will be discussed in other areas at
00:02:41greater length later on meanwhile it's not a factor tonight as we get ready for mayweather against
00:02:46gregorio vargas excuse me larry you heard earlier emmanuel stewart's take on the rift between floyd
00:02:53mayweather jr and his father who still trains him formerly the manager trainer now just the trainer emmanuel
00:02:59says that the rift will definitely affect floyd jr as a fighter and that it's going to get worse
00:03:05before it gets better your take well my first thought is that youth especially when it's so
00:03:11talented can often outrun its mistakes even when it's draped in a few pounds of jewelry including
00:03:18a three hundred thousand dollar watch as mayweather is right now my second thought is is that young
00:03:25mayweather has been the hope and the dream so much has been invested in him both by his father and his
00:03:32extended family so this is a kind of a rebellious act to fly the coop and be on his own a little bit
00:03:40so he's gathered around him a posse of young guys to remind him daily of how great he really is but as
00:03:49well he's taken on a successful music promoter as his manager and given him twenty percent of his take
00:03:58twice what his father was getting and that's just for on the job training basically it's already cost
00:04:07young mayweather about a million dollars in delays while he was calling that 12 million dollar offer
00:04:14from hbo a slave contract and he wound up with his new management signing the same contract but it really
00:04:22is right now a human drama between him and his father that's more important than all of that and
00:04:29which on paper looks more interesting incidentally than the competitive drama between mayweather and
00:04:34goya vargas because not many people give vargas a chance to compete face to face with floyd in the
00:04:40ring why emmanuel because of floyd's blinding superstar speed goya vargas is a good professional fighter
00:04:47even he wouldn't contend that he has the kind of hand speed and foot speed that floyd mayweather has
00:04:51so what does he do about it well first of all even with the problems that mayweather's having with
00:04:56his father i think still he's going to have a great performance tonight because i think it's going to
00:05:00actually stimulate him and he did this point in time to prove how tough he is and i think the only thing
00:05:07that vargas has for him is going to be to be durable put unbelievable pressure even at the risk of being
00:05:14hit and hopefully can try to tie out mayweather because he cannot compete with his hand speed it's just
00:05:18it's totally uh impossible he's going to have to put a lot of pressure and also be able to be
00:05:24watching all the time as he's applying the pressure let's take a look at the tail of the tape now for
00:05:28floyd mayweather jr and gregorio goyo vargas vargas is the most eligible 29 year old bachelor in tiny
00:05:37toluca mexico mayweather six years younger three inches taller five inches more reach they both weighed in
00:05:42in at 130 floyd enters at 139 and a half tonight vargas has gained 11 pounds since the weigh-in rules
00:05:49of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer harold letterman the floyd mayweather jr goyo vargas fight
00:05:54is scheduled for 12 rounds using the unified rules of the association of boxing commissions
00:05:59there is no standing eight count no three knockdown rule only the referee can stop the fight and you cannot be
00:06:06saved by the bell in any round including the 12th and final round jim all right harold and now we're
00:06:14going to watch uh goya vargas come into the ring veteran fighter and if you remember seeing him here
00:06:21previously on hbo it was five and a half years ago when he fought kevin kelly for 126 pound world
00:06:30championship at that time vargas held 126 pound title surrendered it to kelly in a seesaw war here
00:06:36on hbo and since that time has moved up fighting now at 130 pounds although most of his recent fights
00:06:43larry merchant have taken place at a weight level of 135 or 136 pounds he looks like right now jim like he
00:06:50weighs about 170 with all of that aztec regalia on him i don't think even floyd mayweather can surpass this
00:06:59goyo had a chance to fight mayweather six months ago backed out of the fight with three days to go
00:07:06before the promotion was held and infuriated a lot of people by doing so he says he was sick
00:07:12and couldn't have entered the ring and given an effective performance at that time
00:07:18and he did so because when he fought kelly six years ago he says he came in after an automobile accident
00:07:25and injured a knee but he felt he had to fight him and it damaged him during the fight
00:07:34and a closer look now at goyo vargas he lost his title in his first defense to kevin kelly
00:07:42since that time six years just one disputed loss in all of that time getting him back to where he is
00:07:52but should he lose tonight he indicates this could be his last hurrah because he's been at boxing
00:07:59amateur and pro for more than 20 years and he says he's kept his money and bought rental properties in
00:08:05his hometown of toluca mexico and uh he's going to go back and enjoy the fruits of his labor
00:08:13but not before this effort to embarrass the widely ballyhooed mayweather
00:08:20and here comes floyd jr yeah that's his father just over his right shoulder
00:08:29green left green left as they enter the ring
00:08:41business-like entrance in leather interesting sidelight when floyd senior went to the boxing
00:08:50commission yesterday they asked him what color trunks he was wearing his son was wearing
00:08:56and in an embarrassed almost hurt way he said i'm sorry i don't know that's how big the rift is
00:09:05between them outside of the ring and the gym new manager james prince wants to make an imprint in
00:09:13boxing hi manuel trying to start off by grabbing some of the superstars in boxing and mayweather i think
00:09:20is just the beginning i think you're going to see other of the top champions also be and bought up so to
00:09:25say by james prince well there's a rumor that he's about to sign a management deal with mike tyson as
00:09:31tyson's existing deal with shelly finkel comes to a close and uh that'll be interesting to see
00:09:38mayweather has become good buddies with tyson and trained in the the same gym where tyson trains now
00:09:45in phoenix arizona here's a closer look larry this is the longest layoff of his professional career
00:09:53it should not bother him although he did put on more weight than he usually does part of his deal
00:09:59with his new manager is he has started a new label called filthy rich
00:10:10and he has a new goal which is to fight anyone from 130 to 140 pounds starting with prince nasim hamed
00:10:20but he may have to wait a while while you're watching the fight tonight log on to hbo.com
00:10:24slash boxing there you'll be able to score each round and spend some time chatting with lightweight
00:10:29champion paul spadafora incidentally if you were with us last saturday night and you're wondering
00:10:34what was the outcome of the website question asking if fans wanted to see prince nasim hamed win or lose
00:10:41the answer is that 57 percent of voters on the website wanted to see naz lose so the other 43
00:10:48got their way and i'm betting that the next time around the results would be flip-flopped if we were
00:10:53to do it again let's go up to michael buffer now for the official introductions on this one ladies and

00:12:48the number one ranked challenger in the world the former featherweight world champion go yo
00:13:00and his opponent across the ring fighting out of the red corner wearing black trimmed with red and also
00:13:10weighing in at 130 pounds he brings a perfect professional record to the ring consisting of 22
00:13:17bouts 22 victories including 17 knockouts and he is mentioned by many as being among the best pound for
00:13:25the world in the world today ladies and gentlemen from grand rapids michigan presenting the reigning and
00:13:32defending undefeated wbc super featherweight champion of the world pretty boy floyd mayweather
00:13:51in the first fight
00:14:00okay i spoke to both fighters in the dressing room i'm cautioning you again obey my commands at all
00:14:04times shake hands and good luck well after watching uh diego chico corrales operate in the first fight
00:14:13and with the prospect of a fight with mayweather looming later in the year adds a little bit of uh
00:14:23extra interest in mayweather's performance tonight
00:14:27mayweather's last fight he totally outclassed carlos arena of puerto rico he steps out of the corner here
00:14:37and immediately shows vargas his remarkable hand speed firing left hands and landing
00:14:43two or three of them before that one's finally blocked
00:14:56now floyd jabs he started off leading with the left hook and again wings a left hook shot
00:15:02the the difference here is just speed even though goyo is blocking mayweather's punches he cannot
00:15:07retaliate and be effective himself because he's just too slow but he's able to defend himself to a
00:15:12certain degree but he can't do anything effective on the offensive method because of the speed factor
00:15:23mayweather won the world title
00:15:26from jennaro hernandez there was some in the sport who thought he was being rushed
00:15:31that he was in too quickly against hernandez within a couple of rounds he dispelled that notion
00:15:36as he thoroughly outclassed hernandez en route to taking the championship hasn't really been
00:15:42threatened at any time in his professional career
00:15:47well the last time i saw him have a real rough fight myself first was augie sanchez
00:15:51in the amateurs that's true it was two good fights that i saw him fight
00:15:55augie sanchez who's a local las vegas kid incidentally well the biggest difference is right here is just his
00:16:00speed element is just too much for these professional fighters in the amateur it was a big factor but
00:16:05still he had fighters who were much faster but right now at this stage right here the speed is just
00:16:09going to be the factor in this fight separate one word
00:16:14margis manages to stick a right hand to the body
00:16:16margis continues to block mayweather's left hook with his right hand
00:16:27margis's defense is very intelligent he knows that he cannot cope with the speed
00:16:32of mayweather so as soon as he sees mayweather starting to approach with the flyly punches he
00:16:37just merely puts both his hands up for whatever
00:16:40because like a lot of brilliant young stars who can do most of what they want to in the ring
00:16:47mayweather doesn't throw to the body all that much no he's not a body puncher and
00:16:51the fact that margis is not a very good upper body movement fighter himself he doesn't move his body
00:16:56too much he's able to land the counter left hand he basically just comes and puts his hands up to
00:17:03protect himself but it's going to be very interesting though at this point i'm kind of
00:17:06surprised that mayweather seemingly have not been able to figure out how to penetrate through the
00:17:11defense of vargas and that's that's mainly attributed to the fact that he's not that much
00:17:16of an effective body puncher that's right and you can see the calm professionalism of vargas
00:17:22in the face of all this i mean he's been in against quicker fighters before that's true and at this stage
00:17:28he's not giving mayweather a few problems mainly because of mayweather's inability to hit him now
00:17:34when we go to goya vargas's corner if they speak spanish our interpreter is ray torres
00:17:42let's get put a little more pressure on him he's not that fast
00:18:04you're not bad you're doing okay you gotta punch first beat him to the punch
00:18:09don't lower your punches because he's gonna get you okay everything's fine
00:18:17you hit him with a good real body shot
00:18:23accentuate the positive or the little positive for vargas in the corner of mayweather his father
00:18:31telling him go to the body and then go upstairs with that kind of hook body punch hook combination that
00:18:38was the good advice you were referring to emmanuel yes what his father's telling throw the punch to
00:18:42the head first to make him take his elbows up and then just hit him to the bottom because he won't
00:18:46be able to see it but vargas is it is fighting a good fight in the fact he's picking his punches off
00:18:51and if he attacks mayweather after blocking mayweather's punches i think he will be more effective than if he
00:18:58leads right after mayweather finishes his punches often his body's in upright position whereas vargas can come
00:19:04back i think and it'll be much safer for him at that time to attack also there's a red spot on the
00:19:09bridge of vargas's nose good example right there he blocked the punch and then punched after blocking
00:19:14the punch instead of trying to lead first
00:19:16one of the more entertaining corner by corner or uh
00:19:21uh
00:19:25Vargas still picking off a lot of mayweather's shots with his hands but as
00:19:29emmanuel stewart pointed out in round one unable to fire back while being occupied defensively
00:19:35and incidentally that's vargas's father who speaks to him between rounds in the corner the language barrier
00:19:41robson said the chance to listen to joe bussen one of the more entertaining corner by corner or uh
00:19:46round by round trainers in the sport definitely that's once again is a sample of speed he's cannot
00:19:52be that effective offensive but mayweather is not able to penetrate which is is interesting
00:20:00and he still is not following instructions of his father which is to punch to the head first to make
00:20:04him take his arms up and then the punch to the body
00:20:16vargas trying to stick the left hand to the body now tries it again
00:20:21obviously vargas hoping to get to the body a little bit in the early rounds and maybe rob
00:20:26mayweather of some of the foot speeds mayweather's changing his style when he's trying to lean in
00:20:31and punch at a much shorter distance now vargas becomes the stalker and backs mayweather against
00:20:44the ropes and tries to do it again
00:20:47he's trying to get the right hand lead blocked left hook is blocked
00:21:09and if you notice mayweather even though he moves as if he's a flashy boxer he doesn't really box
00:21:14he very seldom suits effective jabs he basically pulls with the jab and blows up with flurs and
00:21:20combinations of punches but he doesn't really move around boxing he has the movements of a boxer
00:21:26but he doesn't box i think his most effective punch is the right hand lead that's another punch he has
00:21:32not been able to land here in the first two rounds against goya vargas i think the empty seats here
00:21:37enjoying this fight more than anybody so far
00:21:40you're good man this guy's slow motion up bro you can hit him with a lot more fun than you hit him
00:21:43but i want you to tell him he's about to take a while
00:21:46you can see everything he's doing up here
00:21:51you can move your head and stuff good enough he ain't telling you with nothing
00:21:54just sign up and then dig in your pain pain in your head when you're making me
00:21:56this fight for you
00:21:59when you get him up close to the ropes hit him on the body the body is with it
00:22:04especially with the right hand you have to hit him don't fake it throw it
00:22:10so far vargas excuse me mayweather has been very good with his speed avoiding punches
00:22:16he's been less successful taking the offense using any aggression to make something happen so far
00:22:25he's a very bright young man maybe he'll have something figured out soon
00:22:33round three begins go ahead emmanuel i think it would be effective if mayweather would start
00:22:37fighting vargas a little closer because even though vargas is a smaller fighter his punches are much
00:22:44wider and he has such a loop room and if he would fight him at a much closer range i think he would
00:22:48catch him while he's throwing a wide punch and i think he's trying to close the distance right now
00:22:52yes i think he need to settle in and fight him a lot closer he has stepped in a half a step
00:22:57and now tries to begin reaching for vargas's body well i just don't see that mayweather wants to
00:23:05to get in close at all i think he wants to avoid contact that's the type of fighter he is
00:23:11use his speed as his big advantage so that he doesn't get hit his first priority is not to get hit
00:23:25you've heard that the name of the game is hit don't be hit his priority is don't be hit and then hit
00:23:31it go all in punch your way out well i can definitely say this it's been a much more
00:23:36difficult fight then i think he is expected and has prepared for right hand lead lands there
00:23:44he found something right there but he still has not been able to land a very devastating punch that
00:23:50was more of a punch that the guy don't see yet but it but it doesn't knock you down or knock you out
00:23:55yeah just an arm punch yes at this point he's not but he may have to satisfy himself with that for a
00:24:00while well and the fact that this man is closing the gap on him and being more effective and being
00:24:05very physical when he gets inside on him means that he's going to have to find some method of doing
00:24:10something different otherwise the fight he will win the fight pilot but he may not have the impressive
00:24:14victory and performance that he's looking for good hard right hand counter by vargas as he slipped it
00:24:21over the top of mayweather's right hand that's true you've said about lennox lewis got to really be
00:24:27an outstanding champion you have to be passionate and aggressive do you see either or both of those
00:24:34qualities in mayweather mayweather right now is having to me the first solid fight that i've seen
00:24:40fight in the profession which i'm surprised to some degree the performance of vargas but at this stage
00:24:45right now i've saw tremendous speed tremendous natural talent but the other qualities i don't think he's
00:24:51been put to the test where he could actually be rated in those areas
00:25:01there's a right hand lead that lands over the top and this is the way i would like to see him fight
00:25:07more even though he's got you know better boxing skills i think i would have him to fight him a little
00:25:12closer because i think his punches would get off much faster and he would catch vargas bodies in the
00:25:17process of trying to deliver well to a certain degree you would say as long as he's not really
00:25:23serious about his jab why box he could be a tremendous boxer to using his jab as a weapon
00:25:32this monday tune in for another edition of real sports with bryant gumbel among the stories a profile
00:25:38of jeanette lee the black widow of billiard she's unique she's sexy it says so right here and a main reason
00:25:44why women's pool is doing so well also we'll show you a high school basketball player who elbowed
00:25:48another player in the face during the game and was sentenced to five years in jail you decide was this
00:25:54fair real sports where nothing is out of bounds
00:25:58that's what we're going to do so we're going to do so we're going to do so we're going to do so
00:26:06apparently there is a cut high high on the forehead with an elbow uh of vargas
00:26:14okay hold on hold on let me keep working on a little bit a plan on it protect that prepare
00:26:18look here joe goosin claiming it came from an elbow
00:26:21and joe goosin making sure that referee richard steel is aware of his opinion
00:26:32now round four begins lloyd mayweather jr landed 14 out of 50 punches by copy box numbers in round three
00:26:39vargas 10 out of out of 33 mayweather 17 of 74 in the jab department as emmanuel stewart told you
00:26:46more often than not he paused with the jab rather than sticking it in there with authority
00:26:53there's a good quick left hook by mayweather partially blocked by vargas
00:26:57vargas chasing mayweather to the corner trying to get to the body mayweather hits him with the right
00:27:03hand inside
00:27:07i think vargas would like to make it a brawl if he could uh he could get at mayweather he's trying to
00:27:11make it a brawl because his speed is just so slow but at the stage right now i don't think that mayweather's
00:27:18hurt him at all in the entire fight in between rounds he seemed to be extremely relaxed very comfortable
00:27:24and i think it has to make ends up being possibly a long fight for mayweather
00:27:30also he's throwing one punch at a time
00:27:32but he doesn't want to commit to it he doesn't want to stand in there and commit
00:27:42and the blood begins flowing from that cut near the top of vargas's left temple
00:27:49that is actually behind the temple i believe in the hairline
00:27:53it's not a threat to his vision shouldn't be no shouldn't be a factor in the fight
00:28:02that's good good body punch rare body punch by mayweather
00:28:19like a lot of fighters who are super fast on their feet lloyd mayweather often throws punches
00:28:24without having his feet set that's true he seems to be settling down there and fighting a much better
00:28:29fight now and much more relaxed you're holding great choosing to say hello to emmanuel stewart
00:28:39between punches there did he say anything beyond hello manny
00:28:46just kind of happy to see you here when did you first see him with a pair of gloves on
00:28:51i think he's about six years old but he's probably been boxing about three years or four years before that
00:28:59you saw floyd land two quick right hands
00:29:05and now vargas gets him where he wants him
00:29:09looks like he's got him where mayweather wants
00:29:12yeah he's not effective right now but it's good for the crowd
00:29:17well and it gives vargas a chance to land a few cheap body shots
00:29:20oh yeah this is his fight though here and help create the mentality of abroad
00:29:25the more powerful he can get mayweather to be
00:29:30quick left hand by mayweather as vargas was lunging in good round good round
00:29:35and now we have a good time
00:29:50all right let's give him some water
00:29:51okay
00:29:58okay
00:29:58okay
00:30:01well you're better at the rope so get him up against the rope
00:30:04okay
00:30:04okay
00:30:05you got his throw punches on top step back and then hit him
00:30:08okay
00:30:10okay
00:30:14okay
00:30:15okay
00:30:21okay
00:30:21mayweather has found his best shots with his right hand
00:30:29question here is whether he's willing to invest to break down
00:30:33vargas or he's going to be content
00:30:36to go the distance with an easy win round five begins harold
00:30:40how did you score the first four jim had said no brainer foot or nothing
00:30:4440 to 36 floyd mayweather jr jim i don't care i think this kid's terrific
00:30:49he's hitting him with everything but the stool i mean if he ain't breaking them down
00:30:53the referee must be hitting goyo vargas because floyd's whacking him with lead rights
00:30:58doing whatever he has to do controlling the ring
00:31:01hitting him with terrific left hooks and voyeur vargas can't touch him
00:31:04it's a terrific left terrific left hooks
00:31:10all right thank you harold
00:31:14i'm glad somebody is enjoying this
00:31:19right hand over the top left hand from underneath
00:31:24well when you're young and you you've got the speed and the reflexes of a cheetah you can get
00:31:29away with stuff that was a prince nassim punch like throwing an uppercut from eight feet away
00:31:36it's the biggest difference is just speed is there's too much speed on me by the spot playing
00:31:41but it's a good fight
00:31:44slip for real richard steel properly ruling that a slip
00:31:49and still the moisture is there incidentally in the same spot on the paint but this time floyd skips over
00:32:00see vargas hammering to the body whenever he gets a chance
00:32:03he's hoping to take some of floyd's legs away
00:32:13now mayweather is standing flat-footed
00:32:17maybe he thinks that vargas is tiring a little bit this is where i would like to see him tighten up
00:32:22because even though he's close i think his hand speed is too much uh and he would catch him
00:32:29with a punch much better than the punches that he's when he shoots his right hand leads
00:32:33they're punches that can land and get points but they're not having that much power
00:32:38and i thought if he would fight at a closer range like that he would eventually land it would
00:32:41catch him with a power punch otherwise i think the fight's going to end up going to try
00:32:45out there in position there may be a small trickle of blood from one of floyd mayweather's nostrils
00:32:53either that or he's picked up blood on his face from vargas's cut
00:33:01mayweather mixing in the left hand to the body in that four punch flurry
00:33:04as he came out of the corner
00:33:05i think floyd's bleeding from the right nostril he's bleeding from the nose
00:33:16probably in the toughest professional fight that he's had in
00:33:21not so tough that he isn't smiling in there from time to time about the way things are going but
00:33:27well he's got control and actually it's given him a chance to spend more of his talents i think in
00:33:31this type of a fight and the longer that it goes and floyd looks over and winks at emmanuel stewart
00:33:37as if they indicate that he enjoyed round five
00:33:41my nose dry
00:33:49when you get him up against the rope
00:33:55when you get him up against the rope
00:33:56okay don't let him out don't let him out
00:34:00you understand keep him there
00:34:04don't let him move out okay
00:34:11yeah yeah you're getting too careless and you're not hitting him
00:34:15you got to make sure that you cover yourself so he doesn't hit you
00:34:18you're okay it's a good fight don't get tired
00:34:30the other guy's tired
00:34:38in round five by compu box numbers vargas landed more power shots than mayweather power shots
00:34:44meaning anything other than a jab hooks crosses uppercuts and body shots all qualify in the
00:34:50compu box language as tower shots vargas landing 13 to mayweather's 10 in the fifth nevertheless
00:34:56floyd continues to control the fight with his speed and his footwork emmanuel stewart you've been
00:35:01quoted as saying that you train prince nasim with an eye down the road toward a possible huge showdown fight
00:35:08with floyd mayweather you see floyd switching southpaw here as he might do against naz's southpaw stance
00:35:14what would your prince nasim game plan be against floyd well i don't think he would switch with
00:35:18nassim because nassim is too dangerous of a puncher he can take risks with this fighter because the guy's
00:35:23slow and he can get away with things and actually floyd's seemingly enjoying himself at the fight now
00:35:28because it's turned out to be a good fight in terms of the crowd appeal but he knows that he still
00:35:33has too much speed for voggers so he's seemingly enjoying himself now would naz just try to walk
00:35:38him down well nassim ahmed himself has good hand speed but more devastating single punching power
00:35:44but maybe floyd has more speed altogether in combination but not as much power
00:35:49it would be a very interesting fight and as naz is learning to shorten up his punches more at this
00:35:54stage and keep his balance it means that if they ever fight maybe down the road in a year or two it'll be a
00:35:59very exciting fight it will be a lot of speed and a lot of power
00:36:11vargas still trying to get to floyd mayweather jr's body midway through the sixth round
00:36:17floyd's had a couple of good flurries here in the sixth
00:36:20and a good left hook to the body there
00:36:29none of his punches seemingly are hurting vaga so he's landing a lot of punches but from the expression
00:36:33i can get on vaga's face there he knows that he's possibly losing on points but he's not being
00:36:38physically hurt and i believe as the fight goes on he's going to start fighting a little bit more
00:36:42because his confidence is going to be up to the point where he believes he can't be hurt that much
00:36:46tell me jim is is vargas the first fighter we've seen with a website on his trunks
00:36:54uh he's the first mexican fighter we've seen with a website on his trunks how's that all right well
00:36:59maybe he'll get knocked on his website uh tonight but mayweather is going to have to commit
00:37:07with some passion to try to make it happen vargas trying to give mayweather a little straight right
00:37:13hand lead action of his own manages to corner mayweather for the moment and wails away to the body
00:37:28out a现 limit on a fifties left hand body shot body shot that he didn't see
00:37:42well he went down on his website
00:37:44When you finally go to the body,
00:37:51you often get results you're not expecting.
00:37:54Well, I think the punch exploded.
00:37:57He never saw the punch coming to serve as effective,
00:37:59but going in this round here,
00:38:01I don't think it's going to have any...
00:38:07Nice and calm.
00:38:09You're okay.
00:38:12Got you.
00:38:14Going into the next round,
00:38:16I don't think the body punch
00:38:17is going to have any lasting effect.
00:38:19Okay.
00:38:20The same way.
00:38:22You got to fight him the same way.
00:38:23Easy enough for you to say, Emmanuel.
00:38:26You want to win?
00:38:30As it was winding down,
00:38:35they were in a scuffle on the ropes,
00:38:37and there's the punch right there in the solar plexus.
00:38:41As I noted before,
00:38:45when Vargas has Mayweather on the ropes,
00:38:48he's got Mayweather where Mayweather wants him
00:38:51because he's got him at close quarters,
00:38:53and he can hit him with punches he may not see.
00:38:56That's because once Mayweather has much faster,
00:38:58has a better coordination in course.
00:39:00Right hand lands for Mayweather.
00:39:03Vargas kind of grinning at him.
00:39:07And Emmanuel Stewart pointed out in the last round,
00:39:12Mayweather not really hurting him with head punches.
00:39:15But when he fired that left hook to the body
00:39:17and got a perfect placement on it,
00:39:19it was enough to score the knockdown.
00:39:21The head punches, he's prepared for the most effective head punch
00:39:24that he's landing is basically the jab.
00:39:26Because Vargas is leaning in forward as he picks the punches up
00:39:30so he can be in a better position when he executes himself.
00:39:33In the early part of the fight,
00:39:34he was standing back blocking the punches,
00:39:36but he's trying to land him over his head,
00:39:37and his hands will be closer to Mayweather after he finishes up.
00:39:40Well, in recent weeks, we've gotten some great illustrations
00:39:43of the importance of body punching.
00:39:45Prince Nassim loosening Guyanibungu up with early body punches last week.
00:39:50Oscar De La Hoya knocking out Darryl Coley with a body punch.
00:39:54Felix Trinidad stopping David Reed's movement
00:39:57and ultimately breaking him down with vicious punishment to the body.
00:40:00The more young fighters learn to do it, the better they get.
00:40:03I feel we've seen more of that since Roy Jones knocked out Virgil Hill
00:40:08with that crushing shot a couple years ago.
00:40:13Midway through round seven,
00:40:23Floyd Mayweather Jr. thoroughly in control,
00:40:26but Goyo Vargas able to show his vast experience and professionalism
00:40:31by eking out ways here and there to stay in the fight.
00:40:36Floyd busting through the guard with his right-hand lead.
00:40:42Those punches are very flashy,
00:40:45but they're not as effective as the shorter punches are
00:40:48because Vargas can see the punches coming,
00:40:51and when you see a punch coming,
00:40:52your muscles and your nervous system prepares to handle it.
00:40:55It looks good, but it's the punch, the short punch that you don't see,
00:40:59much as the body punch that land each other around,
00:41:02which is the most effective.
00:41:03And, of course, often the crowd will ooh and die on punches
00:41:06that are completely blocked or partially blocked.
00:41:08And not only blocked, but all the time,
00:41:10that's what you bust your hands up on a lot with those type punches also
00:41:13because you're landing more on your fingers instead of on your knuckles.
00:41:18Floyd has never complained about hand problems in his career.
00:41:23Vargas leaning against Floyd and trying to pound away to the body,
00:41:27giving Mayweather the kind of chance he got in the last round
00:41:29when he knocked Vargas down with the body shot.
00:41:31But I think Gregorio...
00:41:32Good fighting punch.
00:41:33Good, there you go.
00:41:35Left hand to the body again by Mayweather.
00:41:38This is what I said.
00:41:39I would like to...
00:41:40Even though it's again...
00:41:41I would try to have him fighting,
00:41:42and I think his punching pad would be more effective here.
00:41:45This is one of the few real exchanges I've seen Mayweather in in any fight.
00:41:50Yeah.
00:41:51Mayweather hugging Vargas as if to say thank you for fighting with me.
00:42:00Okay?
00:42:01Very good.
00:42:02Well, Larry, we talked about the possibility of a Mayweather fight with Prince Nassim Hamed.
00:42:07Of course, Naz holds his title at 126 pounds.
00:42:10Who are some of the other top 130-pound fighters?
00:42:12Well, here we see Corrales and Mayweather at the top of the class now.
00:42:16Garcia, who had lost to Corrales, still has to be considered one of the elites.
00:42:22Joel Casemar, the Cuban gold medalist, unbeaten as a pro.
00:42:28Frietas is a newcomer.
00:42:30He's a knockout sensation from Brazil.
00:42:33Chavez actually will be the mandatory challenger for Mayweather after this fight,
00:42:39should he win it.
00:42:40It's been a fight.
00:42:53Not a particularly close one.
00:42:55But Goya Vargas has hung in and tried to dish it out where he could against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:43:01And Mayweather has occasionally relished the chance to trade with Vargas
00:43:05and demonstrate his blinding hand speed.
00:43:10Harold Letterman still enthralled with the way Mayweather is fighting.
00:43:15Cruising to a big lead over Vargas, and we suspect that's true on the other scorecards as well.
00:43:20Between rounds, a round and a half go after Vargas was knocked down on a body shot from Mayweather.
00:43:31You heard Joe Goosen ask him, do you want to continue?
00:43:35No.
00:43:36No.
00:43:37Although Vargas has never been in any real serious trouble.
00:43:39There is a welt along the right eye of Mayweather.
00:43:43I don't think I've seen him with that sort of damage before.
00:43:48I don't think I've seen him with that sort of damage before.
00:44:03Mayweather's skills apparent on the double left hook moments ago,
00:44:07landing to the body and the head.
00:44:09Mayweather's boxing skills and speed right man is virtually winning the fight.
00:44:19But he can't hurt Vargas as much as he would like.
00:44:22What would a Mayweather-Corrales fight look like, Emmanuel?
00:44:26A Mayweather-Corrales fight would be a very interesting fight
00:44:29because Corrales is going to put tremendous pressure,
00:44:32and I don't know if Mayweather would be able to handle pressure
00:44:34coming from a tall fighter which is up on top over him.
00:44:38And the fact that Corrales doesn't punch long punches
00:44:41where you can counter punch.
00:44:42He waits until he's right on you,
00:44:44and you normally have made sure defense motions
00:44:46and he still hasn't punched him when he does punch,
00:44:48it's going to be almost too close.
00:44:50Yeah, but one thing about Corrales is he can be hit.
00:44:54He gets hit.
00:44:55He's open for some shots, and he'll get hit by Mayweather.
00:44:59I don't know that Mayweather can hurt him,
00:45:01but that's got to be a factor going the other way.
00:45:05Mayweather can hit him,
00:45:06but Mayweather's not that much of a devastating one-punch fighter,
00:45:09and that's going to make a difference.
00:45:11I think Corrales would be a very tough fight,
00:45:13and particularly with his height.
00:45:15Off what we've seen in the last six months,
00:45:17you might suspect that Corrales is the harder puncher.
00:45:20Well, I don't suspect it.
00:45:22I think it's perfectly apparent.
00:45:24He stands flat-footed. He's right in there.
00:45:27He throws his punches correctly.
00:45:29Gets good leverage on him.
00:45:32He commits to him.
00:45:35He wants to hurt the other guy.
00:45:37He doesn't want to outpoint him.
00:45:40To some degree, he's a version of Felix Trinidad,
00:45:43to some degree.
00:45:44The fact that being as tall as his,
00:45:45he fights with his hands so high,
00:45:47and all of his punches are very after punches,
00:45:49very low at the gap.
00:45:53Was that a Texas two-step round,
00:45:55or was it some other dance?
00:45:58I haven't heard those.
00:46:02Yeah.
00:46:03Hold, hold, hold.
00:46:04It's okay.
00:46:05I want to do that.
00:46:06Open him up.
00:46:07That's right.
00:46:11Breathe to your mouth.
00:46:14Breathe in deep.
00:46:15That's slow.
00:46:16See the breathing is tough already.
00:46:21We've got four rounds to go.
00:46:23You've got to do it now.
00:46:26Let's give him some water.
00:46:29Uh-huh.
00:46:30Okay.
00:46:31Okay.
00:46:32Okay.
00:46:33Yeah, Royal.
00:46:34It's not a scientific.
00:46:35It's a scientific.
00:46:36You've just got to go.
00:46:37You've just got to go.
00:46:38Okay?
00:46:42Royal Vargas is a real professional,
00:46:44and although he himself admits that
00:46:47the highlight of his career
00:46:49has already happened years ago
00:46:50when he won a featherweight title,
00:46:52and that he is near retirement,
00:46:55he's fighting with the fierce pride
00:46:58of a professional.
00:46:59And it's got to be frustrating.
00:47:02He's in a situation where the speed,
00:47:04he knows it's too much for him
00:47:05and his skill,
00:47:06but he's doing all that he can
00:47:08to win the fight,
00:47:09and has never given up hope still.
00:47:11He's really making every effort
00:47:12that he can still to win this fight,
00:47:14and who knows what would happen
00:47:15later on in the fight
00:47:16when you have a fight of this type,
00:47:18and the fact that he's getting
00:47:19closer to Mayweather now.
00:47:20Has he won a round yet, Harold?
00:47:23No, Jim.
00:47:24I got an 8-0.
00:47:2580-71 played Mayweather.
00:47:27I tell you, Jim, you know,
00:47:28the judges look for four things,
00:47:30and he's doing all four.
00:47:31Well, look at this, Harold.
00:47:34Maybe Vargas can win a round here.
00:47:36As Mayweather elects to hold his hands
00:47:39in front of his face and allow Vargas
00:47:41to pound away at the ribcage and the elbows.
00:47:48Vargas trying to put Mayweather
00:47:50to the test along the ropes.
00:47:52Floyd looking to pick a shot in here.
00:47:57Now, expect Mayweather to explode
00:48:00after this himself.
00:48:02He's hoping to get Vargas
00:48:03to wear himself out.
00:48:04That's correct.
00:48:06Right here.
00:48:10Vargas gets in a left hook upstairs.
00:48:13Mayweather retaliates with a right uppercut.
00:48:15Yeah.
00:48:16And there's a lead right hand
00:48:17and a right hand in the body by Vargas,
00:48:19and now here it comes.
00:48:21Yes.
00:48:22Vargas stopped throwing punches
00:48:23and Mayweather flurries,
00:48:24and now here comes Goya.
00:48:27My goodness, a fight broke out.
00:48:29Bobby said this guy
00:48:31and he's trying to play the best
00:48:32and get lost.
00:48:33Let's go.
00:48:34Oh, yeah.
00:48:35Yes.
00:48:36Go.
00:48:37Go.
00:48:38Go.
00:48:39Go.
00:48:40Go.
00:48:41Go.
00:48:42Go.
00:48:43Go.
00:48:45Go.
00:48:46Go.
00:48:47Go.
00:48:48Go.
00:48:49Go.
00:48:50Go.
00:48:51Go.
00:48:52Go.
00:48:53Go.
00:48:55Go.
00:48:56This may be the most excitement I've ever seen in a Floyd Mayweather fight.
00:49:26Yes, it is. I've been joining it as a fan.
00:49:29Absolutely. This may be Vargas' last stand, but he's given us something by which to judge Floyd.
00:49:42How about the willing enthusiasm of Agoya Vargas, who comes to work and tries to make a fight, though outgunned and forces Floyd Mayweather to be good.
00:49:56I don't know if Vargas won that round, but I'm going to give it to him on general principle.
00:50:00Yes, you have to.
00:50:02I think Floyd, leaning over here, wanted me to know that it was he who was making the fight, and not Boyd Vargas.
00:50:07It's turned out to be quite a fight.
00:50:13Junior, when you're going to, again, you're covering yourself right hand and left hook to the body.
00:50:19Okay? Step to the left.
00:50:21All right, you got to go. You won that round. That was clear. You got balls.
00:50:26Agua, agua.
00:50:28You got to go.
00:50:29Okay?
00:50:30You got to hit him. This is it.
00:50:32This is Vargas throws a nice left hand over Mayweather's glove.
00:50:39This may be the last stand of a tough, smart, veteran fighter trying to get back into the fight or at least leave a few marks on Mayweather to know he's been in a fight.
00:50:54And something happened in Vargas' corner I should bring your attention to, which is that he told his corner that he was having some problems with his legs.
00:51:04He raised his legs to get a rub down. What do you think that means, Emmanuel?
00:51:08Well, that was a real brutal round, and I don't know what affected me I've had on him, but I think Mayweather, even though it was maybe a round that he could have given to Vargas,
00:51:18I would say that the momentum should have been better for Mayweather because I thought that he thought a much smarter strategy by letting Vargas expand himself and open up afterwards.
00:51:27But you know the round could have went either way, but I think going down the stretch, I think that Vargas is going to tire, but who can tell?
00:51:34In round nine, they landed a combined 62 punches by CompuBox estimation, 60 of them power shots.
00:51:42I'd be surprised if you see another rally in the last three rounds by Vargas to match what he was able to do in round nine.
00:51:50And Mayweather back up and moving on his feet now as the tenth round progresses toward its midpoint.
00:51:57Which I think is smart because going down the stretch, footwork usually bothers the fighter if he's not that good with his feet, unless he gets tired.
00:52:07Well, Floyd certainly doesn't have to stand in the corner and trade shots with Gouya Vargas unless he wants to.
00:52:13No, he can box now. I think he's taken a lot of energy out of him, and I think his youth and speed will carry him down the stretch.
00:52:18He should finish up very strong now.
00:52:20When you're training a young talent like Floyd Mayweather, how do you get him not to be knockout conscious?
00:52:44I mean, do you think this kid is perfectly satisfied to close to a 12 round victory here?
00:52:48I think he's going to be satisfied. I think he's settled in and realized that he's had a difficult fight.
00:52:52And for the most part, he's going to be glad to see the trap round over him, too.
00:52:59This is a much rougher fight than he ever expected.
00:53:05I think he should use his footwork this last round or two because it's very difficult for a lot of fighters to twist and turn and pivot a lot when they're tired if they're not very gifted with their feet.
00:53:13Floyd switches to a southpaw stance for the second time in the fight.
00:53:17Third time, he says.
00:53:20Thank you for the correction, Floyd.
00:53:21Thanks for the correction.
00:53:29Maybe I should give him my headset so he can do the blow-by-blow as well.
00:53:32While he's boxing.
00:53:33A hard right hand by Mayweather right down the pipe.
00:53:45Yeah!
00:53:47All right!
00:53:48All right, all right!
00:53:49All right, all right!
00:53:50Time!
00:54:00What round is this?
00:54:0111.
00:54:0211?
00:54:02You coming up?
00:54:03Yeah.
00:54:0311 and down, baby!
00:54:0411, 11.
00:54:05I want, I want, I want, I want a big round this round.
00:54:11How do you feel?
00:54:12Let me go.
00:54:13Give me a big round this round.
00:54:15Turn it on.
00:54:16Last couple of rounds back, give me a big round, okay?
00:54:20All right, we've got two rounds to go.
00:54:23That's all we got.
00:54:25You won the last two.
00:54:26Let's go for it.
00:54:27You got to throw a lot of punches and you got to be aggressive.
00:54:31He doesn't want to fight anymore.
00:54:32He's very tired.
00:54:33You got to use that rhythm and the pressure.
00:54:35Vargas still searching and finding Mayweather in that case.
00:54:50That left hand excited the crowd and you heard Vargas' dad asking him for what might be impossible,
00:54:58which is big activity and mucho business in the last two rounds against Mayweather.
00:55:04Well, if both fighters listen to their fathers, we'll have a hell of a round.
00:55:08That's right.
00:55:09Both fathers say they want a big round.
00:55:11But I'm very surprised at Vargas.
00:55:13He's impressed me with his stamina and it seems like he's got into a groove right now where he hasn't changed.
00:55:20He's one, two.
00:55:21Where's the three, four?
00:55:23He doesn't want to stand in there for the three, four.
00:55:25Floyd Mayweather is a very fast talent to fight, but not a really big puncher.
00:55:29He's got a has a territory uit.
00:55:31It's a very fast talent to beché.
00:55:32Thank you!
00:55:34Thank you!
00:55:36You're going to be faithful!
00:55:38Is it?
00:55:40You're going to be faithful!
00:55:41Oh, my gosh.
00:55:45I'm going to be faithful!
00:55:54Mayweather just picking his shots now as Vargas walks to him.
00:55:58I think Mayweather's fighting the perfect fight now at this stage since he realizes he's not going to knock him out.
00:56:04The best thing to do is keep punching and moving all the time.
00:56:12You think fans want to see this kind of almost perfection from a fighter like Mayweather?
00:56:19No, especially after the rounds they've had a couple of rounds back.
00:56:21They want to go back to those days.
00:56:23But, you know, oftentimes when a guy starts boxing and another guy gets tired, he can catch him with a clean punch that he doesn't expect
00:56:30and can have more power and effect on that than when they're standing toe-to-toe because he's not expecting.
00:56:36His mind is so preoccupied, they're chasing after him, and then he gets hit with a punch, and he's not expecting it.
00:56:44But your point is well taken, Larry.
00:56:46Fans like blood and guts.
00:56:48They appreciate what Roy Jones does, but they're in love with Tommy Hearns.
00:56:52Well, it's not just blood and guts.
00:56:54It's stand and deliver sometimes.
00:56:56It's show passion.
00:56:58It's to want to complete your work in there, whatever it turns out to be.
00:57:13Double right hand by Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:57:16Misses with the left hook.
00:57:17It's always nice to see a young fighter try to finish combinations with the left hook.
00:57:29Mayweather using his feet now to be sure as we come to the closing seconds of the 11th round.
00:57:36The scattered, occasional boom echoing through the arena here as some fans want to see more action like they saw in the 9th and 10th round.
00:57:46Definitely.
00:57:47I would like to see more action that way, but if I was for him, maybe this one, I would like for him to keep fighting the way that he's fighting.
00:57:51You got to go out here, man, and flurry.
00:58:10I don't care if you're going to do it.
00:58:11The last and final round.
00:58:12I'll do it for you, guys.
00:58:13Okay.
00:58:14I love you.
00:58:14I'll do it for you.
00:58:15It's the last and final round.
00:58:23It's the last round.
00:58:25You got to gamble.
00:58:26You got to go and throw punches.
00:58:28Last round, we told you.
00:58:31Let's get the mouthpiece in there.
00:58:33Let's go.
00:58:34We got one chance.
00:58:35There's no more secret.
00:58:36The fight is not that wide open.
00:58:40It's closed.
00:58:42Interested spectator, Diego Chico Corrales.
00:58:45Two developments in the corner.
00:58:48One, Mayweather is shaking his right hand as though he may have heard it.
00:58:52And secondly, his father whispered something in his ear about what he wanted.
00:58:57And whatever their rift is outside the ring, Junior said, I'll try to do it for you, Dan.
00:59:03I think it was beautiful.
00:59:05This fight may be the fight that can help bring them two back together, believe it or not.
00:59:09Harold, how do you have it through 11?
00:59:11Okay, Jim, I got a 10-1, 109-99, Floyd Mayweather, Junior.
00:59:16I agree with Larry on that ninth round.
00:59:18I thought definitely Goyo deserved that because he hammered him on the ropes.
00:59:21But, you know, good ring generalship, good punching like that, good defense by Floyd.
00:59:25I mean, he's doing all the things that the judges really watch.
00:59:28He should be winning this fight handily.
00:59:32Still throwing the right hand.
00:59:36Yes, he's throwing it, but not with a lot of power.
00:59:38Slapping with it.
00:59:38Yeah, he's throwing it.
00:59:40But I think he has with his right hand.
00:59:42But he's fighting a very smart fight.
00:59:43And I think this fight will make him grow up and become a complete fighter much more than those other fights he's had in the past.
00:59:49Because he's been challenged for the first time.
00:59:51He's been hit, I think.
00:59:53And he's had to extend himself while he's tired.
00:59:55I don't think he's ever been in this state physically where he's been exhausted and still has had to continue the fight.
01:00:00He's been 12 rounds with a real pro.
01:00:03A quality, professional fighter who knows what he's doing in there and who understood a little of how to try to compensate for his physical disadvantages against Floyd.
01:00:11That's correct.
01:00:12Not having the speed to compensate, but he did other things.
01:00:15And I think as a result of this, Floyd has grown.
01:00:21And possibly his relationship with his father may improve a lot after this fight.
01:00:27Because he's been a pretty rough fight here.
01:00:28And his father is one of the things that he had to look to to help him get advice and to try to, in this case, survive.
01:00:35In 20 seconds or less, because we're in the last minute of the fight, when you see a fighter walk into your gym with his dad, Emmanuel, do you say to yourself,
01:00:44that's good because he has the backing and support of a family member, or that's bad because the dad is likely to be living through the sun for vicarious girls?
01:00:50In most cases, the dad is living through the sun.
01:00:53I have some exceptional cases.
01:00:55I have one of my kids in Detroit, Kevin MacTavio Lara, whose dad is one of my biggest assets.
01:01:00But in most of the cases, the dad's a mutual problem.
01:01:0345 seconds to go.
01:01:05A decision rather than a knockout, very likely, as Floyd Mayweather comes down the stretch against Gregorio Vargas.
01:01:12A fight in which you might conceivably have scored every round for Mayweather, but nevertheless, a test of his overall professionalism
01:01:20and the chance to show off all of his varied skills against a guy who knows how to fight.
01:01:38Having said that, he doesn't look like any $12 million fighter to me.
01:01:42He and his supporters will dispute.
01:02:03Joe Goosen seeming to ask his fighter, why did you fight the 12th round that way?
01:02:09I told you he needed a knockout to win.
01:02:12But thinking about a knockout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and getting one are two entirely different things.
01:02:21And in what might be seen as evidence that Vargas is ready to retire from the ring,
01:02:28his handlers elect to carry him around after he has taken an obvious shellacking from Floyd Mayweather.
01:02:36Harold, I'll just score a 2-12.
01:02:40Well, Jim, almost perfect, but not quite.
01:02:43119-108, 11 rounds to 1.
01:02:46Floyd Mayweather Jr., you've got to give him that extra point for round 6 for the knockdown.
01:02:51Goyo Vargas definitely went round 9 on my card.
01:02:54But, you know, as I started to say before, clean punching, effective aggressiveness, ring gentlenesship, good defense.
01:03:02It was all Floyd Mayweather.
01:03:04He deserves to win this fight by a wide margin.
01:03:06And now let's go to ring announcer Michael Buffer with the official decision.
01:03:13Ladies and gentlemen, here at the MGM Grand, we go to the Budweiser scorecards.
01:03:19John Keene and Daniel Vandeville have scored the bout 119-108.
01:03:24Choke Champa scores at 118-109 for the winner and still the undefeated champion, pretty boy Floyd Mayweather.
01:03:38So Mayweather remains unbeaten, as did another 130-pound titlist earlier this evening, Diego Chico Corrales.
01:03:59Big smile on the face of Floyd Mayweather Sr., who has been through some rough times,
01:04:05having been dismissed, more or less, by his son as manager.
01:04:09Actually, Floyd Jr. said to us yesterday, get this straight, my dad was never really my manager.
01:04:15But most of the boxing world saw him that way.
01:04:17Nevertheless, business upheaval and change leads to no diminution of skills in the ring,
01:04:24and Floyd Jr. cruises to a unanimous decision victory.
01:04:27Final punch stat numbers will show Floyd Jr.'s punching accuracy
01:04:31as he landed 42% of his overall punch output,
01:04:36throwing more than Vargas, landing more than Vargas,
01:04:39landing at a higher percentage rate,
01:04:41and by and large, landing the more effective blows throughout the fight.
01:04:47And Larry Merchant stands by with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the ring.
01:04:50Larry Merchant.
01:04:51All right, thank you, guys.
01:04:53Floyd, congratulations.
01:04:55More difficult fight than you anticipated?
01:04:57Not at all.
01:04:57I knew Goyal Vargas was a tough opponent, ex-champion.
01:05:00But first of all, I want to thank God for this victory,
01:05:02and thank Team Mayweather, and thank Grant.
01:05:06Did you hurt your hand somewhere late in the fight?
01:05:09To be honest, I came to this fight with a messed up right hand.
01:05:12But I didn't want to have no excuse backing out because I'm a true champion,
01:05:15and I come to fight.
01:05:16Was it bothering you more in the late rounds than the early rounds?
01:05:19Because you started to shake it.
01:05:21Early rounds, it really wasn't bothering me too much.
01:05:22But around the sixth round, it started hurting me.
01:05:24But I still was throwing it, you know, I wanted to go out there and put on a good show
01:05:27and show how a true champion fights.
01:05:29Ninth round, you stood and exchanged with Vargas a lot.
01:05:33Why?
01:05:33Did you want to take him out?
01:05:34Did you want to give the crowd a show?
01:05:36Give us your explanation.
01:05:38I wanted to show the crowd that I can fight on the inside a little bit
01:05:40and working on defense.
01:05:42I need to go back home and work on some defense with my father,
01:05:45talk over some things with him, and get things ready for my next fight.
01:05:47Before the last round, your dad whispered something in your ear,
01:05:53and you said, I'll try it for you, Dad.
01:05:55What did he say?
01:05:56He said, give me a strong 12th round if you can.
01:05:59And I said, Daddy, I'm going to try to give it all I can.
01:06:01You know, I love you, and I know you're behind me 100%.
01:06:03All right, there's no secret that you and your dad
01:06:06have had your differences outside of the ring.
01:06:10Did everything work inside of the ring,
01:06:12and can you work together inside of the ring
01:06:15and maybe repair things outside of the ring?
01:06:18Well, everything that happened on the outside of the ring was hearsay.
01:06:20I mean, I love my father more.
01:06:21I always love my father, and I always want my dad to be my trainer.
01:06:23I always want my dad to support me 100%, no matter what he says.
01:06:26I love my father.
01:06:28Give us your rating of this fight, Dad.
01:06:31I think it was a very, very good fight for, you know,
01:06:35being laid off six months and, you know,
01:06:38and not really having the right spine that we really need.
01:06:43But, I mean, I thought he put on a tremendous job.
01:06:46I think he threw a lot of punches.
01:06:47And like you said about the defense, you know,
01:06:54he's been off a little bit.
01:06:55So, you know, he got hit a little bit more than anticipated.
01:06:58But, you know, we're going to go to the gym.
01:07:00We're going to get it all together.
01:07:01It's no problem.
01:07:03Is this where it's now the most fun for you in the ring and in the gym
01:07:07because that's where you are close?
01:07:10Well, this is my son.
01:07:12In regards to whatever's said in the paper, in the media, around the world,
01:07:17this is my son.
01:07:18I love him.
01:07:18My blood run through this man.
01:07:20And like I said, his blood run through me.
01:07:23I mean, we may have different.
01:07:26Everybody's going to have different.
01:07:27That's life.
01:07:28Nobody is perfect.
01:07:29He's young.
01:07:31To me right now, he's young.
01:07:32Right now to me, he's making big mistakes.
01:07:36But, hey, we all make mistakes.
01:07:38I made them.
01:07:39He's going to make them.
01:07:41Sometimes we pay more than the other guy.
01:07:44So, you know, I just hope some kind of way, and I pray that, hey,
01:07:50that everything will work out for him.
01:07:52But this is my son.
01:07:53I love him.
01:07:54And we're going to be together forever.
01:07:56Just one last thing.
01:07:57Did you watch Corrales fight?
01:08:01Give us your thoughts about him and about meeting him in a big showdown fight
01:08:05perhaps later this year.
01:08:06I'm looking forward to fighting Diego Corrales in the future.
01:08:09You know, hopefully we can build that fight up,
01:08:11and me and him can fight and unify the titles.
01:08:13And I'm looking forward to fighting the WBA Junior Lightweight Champion next.
01:08:16Then after that, me and Corrales can fight to unify the titles.
01:08:19Thank you very much, senior and junior.
01:08:22Back to you, Jim and Evander.
01:08:26All right.
01:08:27Well, not Evander, but Emmanuel.
01:08:29He is maybe the two-time heavyweight champion of trainers,
01:08:33and he trains the guy who beat Evander Holyfield twice.
01:08:35Emmanuel, we need only to see the tight shot of those two faces,
01:08:39to see the stress that these two men are undergoing
01:08:42as they try to change their relationship to something different
01:08:45than it's been in the past.
01:08:47Tonight may have been a big step forward.
01:08:49I think tonight was not only a good fight,
01:08:52but the fight, I think, brought the two together
01:08:54because I think that he realized he needed his dad.
01:08:57And I think Mayweather grew from the fight himself as a boxer,
01:09:01but I think his dad and he will be much, much closer.
01:09:03I knew eventually the ref would end and they would be back together
01:09:07because it was too strong a bond they had for them to ever be separated.
01:09:10I know it was just going to be a matter of time,
01:09:12but I think tonight's fight and performance will make that time be a lot shorter.
01:09:17And while the father-as-trainer thing isn't always a great idea,
01:09:21he's been a good trainer for his son because he's an objective critic.
01:09:25He's a good trainer, but also a good father.
01:09:26It's a very warm relationship.
01:09:28And I think Mayweather, Jr., he's just young.
01:09:30He's a very young kid, as Larry said earlier,
01:09:32and he's just, you know, he's never been exposed to nothing.
01:09:34Like, all of a sudden, he's a superstar champion.
01:09:37He's got multi-million dollar rap singers all involved after him.
01:09:40He's become a star.
01:09:41He's got jewelry.
01:09:42And he's became bigger in other areas than he is as a boxer, I think.
01:09:46And I think looking at this arena tonight should make him realize that
01:09:49being a champion, being a good boxer, and being a superstar is different.
01:09:53And I think tonight he should realize that, that he has a lot to go to become a superstar,
01:09:58but he's on his way.
01:09:59And, Manny, you could be a superstar expert commentator if you ever get tired of making
01:10:02millions training Lennox Lewis to hold on to the Unified Heavyweight Championship of the world.
01:10:06No, I'm just going to be good fans for you and Larry, and I'll be watching you guys.
01:10:09Thanks a lot.
01:10:09It was a great pleasure to have you with us.
01:10:11Larry Merchant, a last word about the 130-pounders,
01:10:15or a last word about another subject we have not touched,
01:10:18which is scoring controversies here in Las Vegas.
01:10:21Well, first of all, let me apologize to Emanuel for calling him a vander.
01:10:25He didn't mind.
01:10:28But maybe a vander-minded.
01:10:30Well, the judges didn't come into play tonight, obviously,
01:10:34and they haven't in any fight with Mayweather.
01:10:37But I had a conversation today and yesterday with Mark Ratner,
01:10:42the chairman of the commission here, that I thought I should report to you on.
01:10:45And that was about the scoring of that magnificent holy war we had here last month.
01:10:51between Morales and Barrera.
01:10:54When a fighter like Barrera makes the effort he does and gets so little credit from one official,
01:11:01something needs to be said.
01:11:03And Dalby Shirley infamously had that fight eight rounds to three going into the last round,
01:11:12having given Morales seven straight rounds, which means he gave him every close rounds,
01:11:18which strongly suggests some kind of agenda, conscious or otherwise.
01:11:25I asked Ratner about appointing a WBC official to a WBC fight,
01:11:31an official whose record shows that he customarily favors what we call the house fighter,
01:11:38the fighter that the promoter and the money people want to see win the fight.
01:11:43And he said to me, he made a mistake, that was a very poor scorecard,
01:11:50and he will not appoint him again to a big fight for a long time,
01:11:55nor will he appoint any Nevada official who is also a member of one of the sanctioning bodies,
