00:00In 2025, the Central Division recorded 73 murders, the highest of all divisions across the country, despite consecutive states of emergency.
00:10Now with the government set to roll out the special zones of operation, one senior police official tells TV6 News he is not at all in support of the move.
00:19The police official tells TV6 News the government's move to implement special zones of operations will do nothing to impact crime in the long term.
00:30He adds, the data show that many of the perpetrators of crimes do not reside in the divisions where the crimes are recorded.
00:38And so he is curious to know how the policy is being informed as it pertains to where the special zones of operation are to be implemented.
00:47He goes further to state that he has no doubt the criminals will simply migrate when special zones are set up in their areas.
00:56The police official says just under 25 Chaguanas residents have been detained under preventive detention orders.
01:03However, he points out not one has been charged.
01:06He laments that true police work is being bypassed for measures, which he says will cost the state millions at the end for infringing on citizens' constitutional rights.
01:17He believes the country would be better off if the focus were on improving the investigative capacity of the TDPS and implementing crime-fighting strategies which are sustainable and constitutional.
01:31Meantime, the Port of Spain Division is reporting a drastic decrease in homicides, down from the number one spot in 2024 with 102 murders to a mere 36 in 2025.
01:43However, a senior official in the Port of Spain Division tells TV6 News, while the SOEs have a role to play in the 65% reduction in murders, he is of the view that aggressive policing brought the results.
01:57He declares Port of Spain is doing well, but admits that based on past trends, he still expects to see quite a few special zones of operation set up in his division.
02:10Well, based on 2025 figures, the most homicidal districts are as follows.
02:16In the number one spot, the Central Division, number two, Northern Division, number three, Southern Division, number four, Northeastern Division, number five, Port of Spain, number six, Eastern Division, number seven, Southwestern, number eight, Western Division, number nine, North Central, and in tenth place, Tobago.
02:40However, it should be noted that geographically, the three Northern divisions have the highest tally.
