00:00:00good comedy and likability there's no sell-by date on that sort of thing
00:00:08what they wrote was timeless because it was authentic it's the kind of show i wish was on
00:00:15the air right now whenever you find it on tv it makes me stop and every joke is still just as
00:00:22funny and this murderer's row of a cast ray was somebody you wanted in your home you wanted to
00:00:28be part of that family i believe in 20 30 40 50 more years we'll still love everybody loves raymond
00:00:35the writing and the acting directing that was near perfect my god and it's in color
00:00:58so
00:01:05so
00:01:13so
00:01:21don't make me cry
00:01:35i love you i love you thank you don't make me cry yet there's gonna be a lot of that
00:01:47let me just tell you something the reason we're doing this is because of the fans i mean i miss
00:01:53it i miss everything i miss you people i miss the cast my real wife is backstage with my tv wife
00:01:59yes if you've been married for a long time folks you know there's a lot of ups and downs and uh
00:02:06this is an example of how long we've been married the other day she actually said to me
00:02:09you know you don't talk a lot but when you do it's too much
00:02:16we're gonna have a great night i'm so glad you're here who came from like far away who's from the
00:02:23where are you from philippines i watched you when i was like seven or eight in the philippines
00:02:27yes but of course dubbed in no i learned english you learned english from me
00:02:33well
00:02:38i appreciate it but thank you very much listen before we go even further i want to bring out a man
00:02:47who's been my partner in this venture in this journey for the last 30 years
00:02:52he's the reason that this show exists but this was his baby just like it was mine
00:02:58please welcome phil rosenthal
00:02:59how great is this this is amazing you learned how to speak english from ray romano
00:03:18so were your first english words oh no
00:03:21first of all let's get one thing out of the way this i'm sure you know is a reunion
00:03:29this is a reunion that not a reboot we're never going to do one because uh we're missing three
00:03:35cast members three family members so we would never try to do it wouldn't be the same and we
00:03:41have too much respect for the show itself and for the for the beautiful audience right to keep it the
00:03:46way it is and thankfully the show is still on every day all over the world which
00:03:51right if you want to visit your friends uh we're here
00:03:56how did we meet well i was in bed
00:04:01and i was watching david letterman with my wife this would have been 1995
00:04:06uh we had a production company and we were always looking for a funny project and i i think we were
00:04:17all pretty greedy when we saw ray our ladies and gentlemen next guest is a very funny comedian uh making
00:04:22his first appearance with us tonight he can also be seen wow i just looked like a mid-level mortuary
00:04:28has gotten a hold of me in favor now please a nice welcome for ray romano ray
00:04:32my first impression he's wearing his father's suit but that's fine i'm gonna let that go
00:04:40i have a three-year-old daughter and twin two-year-old boys
00:04:44wow
00:04:46thank you single people are here
00:04:50i can make them laugh i can make an infant laugh in a second
00:04:54i'll tell you i'm losing my perspective on adult humor
00:04:57i wrote one new joke since my twins were born here is this funny what do you think it is
00:05:01hi
00:05:03hi everybody
00:05:06that rings true with me i had no idea how to be a parent so i thought if i can make the kid laugh
00:05:13i've done something i'm glad i'm glad you laughed if you didn't laugh at that
00:05:17i would have had to come and rub my nose in your bellies
00:05:21ray is the guy and let's go and before he gets in the cab let's get him to sign something and i
00:05:29think it was a combination of his likability and the quality of the material i thought you know pretty
00:05:35run-of-the-mill topics but the quality of the jokes in those topics i thought were superior
00:05:40it was just dumb luck that we had anything to do with it
00:05:43it's like you know kids playing with fireworks
00:05:47oh geez it actually exploded it was it was sort of like that
00:05:51that's why we're here
00:05:58a week later they called me and said we'd like to sign you to a deal
00:06:05right to try to produce a sitcom
00:06:07right and then i had to go find a guy to write it and run it and did you
00:06:15so they set us up on a blind date here in la at arts deli on ventura boulevard and we meet
00:06:23and i say to ray you know tell me about yourself just like i would with any of you if we were going
00:06:28to work together but we didn't know each other so tell me about yourself and you said well i got
00:06:32twin boys and an older daughter and my parents live close by in queens you got to do the voice
00:06:37you got to do a little bit yeah okay and then uh uh my my older brother's a police sergeant he
00:06:42lives with them he's always touching uh every bite of food to his gym before he eats and he's kind
00:06:46of jealous of me he saw my stand-up comedy award and he said never ends for raymond everybody loves
00:06:52raymond and do you remember what i said you said uh well i don't think there's anything there
00:06:58jokingly i thought that was a very good place to start and what i didn't know about the
00:07:05personalities in ray's family i filled in with the personalities from my family 90 of everything
00:07:12you saw on the show happened to me or to ray or to one of the other writers
00:07:16what are you doing the show had premiered and ray said to his wife anna my show just premiered in
00:07:27front of all these people and she said yeah and i just cleaned plum off the ceiling from the kids
00:07:32i think this show means everything to us it got to capture our family ray's family everybody who
00:07:41worked here their families it was just like a community you know we became a community we all
00:07:46felt so safe here and welcomed i remember my dad would he'd come out right before the show
00:07:51he'd greet the audience he always would bring me up say hello he'd do the same joke with the audience
00:07:56about having twins but here's matt i have another son if he was here look like this and then i'd go
00:08:02behind him and stand on that side there's one episode based on a real thing that i did which is
00:08:08when i was in first grade we all had to write books you know little picture books my book was
00:08:14the angry family
00:08:17all the parents came in to read it and you know they were all looking at my parents
00:08:25mommy was mad at the daddy
00:08:27he got an episode out of it
00:08:31yeah the ray on the show is the ray at home and that is because at home
00:08:36he does a lot of annoying things that drive me crazy
00:08:39i think if i were to do an impression it's just a little bit deeper
00:08:43like grunt like
00:08:45people do the grunt right oh come on my back is here it's a little oh okay no it's now it's even
00:08:53worse now it's even worse debra who brought the cookies here who brought the donuts all right i'm
00:08:57just gonna eat one oh my god it's so good five minutes later oh my stomach hurts ali why'd you do
00:09:04that oh oh no yep there it went again i think one of the things that put it over the top where cbs
00:09:14had to decide whether to put us on was something out of your actual life which was when i'm writing
00:09:21a pilot i'm thinking how do we convey exactly in a short amount of time how crazy ray's parents are
00:09:27and then this happened to me where i sent my parents i thought i was being nice
00:09:33a gift of fruit of the month club
00:09:36look i appreciate the thought raymond but please don't ever send us any more food again okay
00:09:42well another box is coming next month what more pairs
00:09:48no no it's a different fruit every month
00:09:52every month yes yes that's why they call it fruit of the month club
00:09:56it's a club oh my god what do i do with all this fruit well most people like it ma you share it
00:10:02share it with all your friends which friends i don't know lean and stand lean and stand by their
00:10:06own fruit oh why did you throw this to me oh my god i can't talk there's too much fruit in the house
00:10:14what do you think we are invalids we can't go out and get our own fruit i'm trying to tell them
00:10:21all right i'm canceling the fruit club oh good thank you raymond thank you and don't do that
00:10:27again like we don't have enough problems
00:10:29what i didn't realize and what i learned from doing that from us doing that
00:10:40oh wait your parents are all crazy too yes we get it all the time people from all over parts of the
00:10:47world tell us that's my mother that's my that's my father we didn't know your mother we were writing
00:10:52our mother and we have so many favorite episodes some of the ones we're going to talk about tonight
00:10:56i have one that just came to mind and it's good since we're starting you know we did a flashback
00:11:01episode at the end of every season and this was my favorite because it's how they met meaning ray and
00:11:08deborah you know it looks like i made too much food here if you're um hungry oh yeah yeah you want
00:11:16something all right yeah wrap it up i'll eat it in the truck can i ask you something yeah sure
00:11:26were you making all that food for someone and they didn't show up they showed up
00:11:34hey you want something to drink yeah yeah well let me get that okay the glasses are right there okay
00:11:41ice i like the i like the round cubes with the holes in them those are my favorite kind of cubes
00:12:01are you okay yeah i'm fine ah you're all right yeah you're a good kisser all right you're in shock
00:12:19you're both so great in that and it's just so sweet to me in addition to being funny the flashback
00:12:28episodes were always so fun fun to do i look i like all the episodes but of course there's some
00:12:34we like more than others and i have like a top five and i the one off the top of my head
00:12:39is uh called talk to your daughter so talk to your daughter is about at some point having to have the
00:12:46talk with your child about the birds and the bees you know when a man and a woman love each other very
00:12:54much they get married and then sometimes they decide to make a baby i know that the man and the woman
00:13:02have to do something but why are we born why has god put us here
00:13:08why are we here daddy yeah i heard you i heard you
00:13:26you don't want to talk about sex
00:13:31what do you want to talk about sex she started asking questions about life why did god put us
00:13:38here crazy stuff like that wow so what did you say i told her we're here because heaven is crowded
00:13:44you said heaven is crowded i got ambushed if you want to know what's in the bible why don't you talk
00:13:53to father hubley hey that's right you know what it's his job to know these things you're gonna call
00:13:58him yeah what are we putting the money in that basket for me and the family were just sitting around
00:14:04and we had a quick question for you what is the meaning of life
00:14:08so if you could get back to us as soon as possible we appreciate it right
00:14:13i'd hate to admit it but i'm guilty of what i didn't have that talk with my kids now i have 19 grandchildren
00:14:25all right they don't want to hear two old guys talk should we they don't should we bring out uh bring
00:14:32out some people yes yes let's do that we'll do it right away
00:14:39when i got married i didn't just get a husband i got a whole freak show that set up their tent
00:14:49right across the street oh you were open and considerate and willing to look at your own
00:14:55fault you made me sick ray ray ray ray hello raymond i do not have a drinking problem sir what i have
00:15:04is a mother-in-law problem
00:15:06no no no we're going to counseling no meant what i said here today i love you i'm pregnant i am not
00:15:18the yeller you are the reason for the yeller i have no idea what i have to put up with
00:15:22ladies and gentlemen patricia heaton
00:15:30patty
00:15:35look at these two i'm so happy do you know
00:15:52i didn't say this we saw 200 women before we found patty heaton 200 and when she came in
00:16:01she just knocked it out of the park i mean you can talk about what that day was like
00:16:05well i was going through and i think why the show worked we were all going through what
00:16:11the barone family was going through in our lives we all were newly married yes and i had i had a
00:16:17three-year-old and a one-year-old in my life right i had a babysitting issue when i was coming to the
00:16:23audition i needed to get back i was cutting out coupons for 50 cents off two packs of ballpark
00:16:28franks and so i needed the gig and i got there and there was a waiting room of at least eight women
00:16:35and i thought i'm never going to get back in time for the babysitter and so i went in
00:16:39and sat there and i just needed to get this audition done and um there was a guy sitting
00:16:44in the corner and i thought maybe he can get me some water while we're waiting for ray to come
00:16:48it was him and i didn't really have to do research and i didn't really have to do acting because it
00:16:53was what we were all dealing with in our marriages and so fortunately we got to monetize that yeah
00:16:59yes you were living the role you were living the role you know when i need to talk to ray about
00:17:04like my feelings or our children i know i have until the commercial's over that gives me 30
00:17:10seconds and if there's a girl in the commercial or a truck with big wheels or god forbid a monkey
00:17:16forget it i think it was the first show i'd worked on i've worked for a while on tv that really
00:17:20encouraged us to bring in our stories from home phil in the writer's room only half jokingly said
00:17:25all right we need two more stories anybody having a fight with their spouse phil's idea when he was
00:17:30running the show was how can you write about real life if you can't live one there's an
00:17:34episode of raymond called the 10th anniversary where ray and deborah put in the vhs tape of their
00:17:39wedding on their 10th anniversary and discovered that he's taped over with a super bowl
00:17:48i did that but it was my first anniversary we put in our vhs tape and discovered that i had taped
00:17:57over our wedding with an episode of everybody loves raymond where did our wedding go
00:18:01it's just like the stories seem authentic and whether it's more exaggerated than maybe it
00:18:10would have happened in real life like that kernel of truth i think comes through well 10 years that's
00:18:15it was such a pleasure to write for both of you and there was one other
00:18:26there was phil's getting emotional a little bit because it's a dream to wind up with people like this
00:18:34if you're just a writer you pray for someone to come along and give so much more beyond it
00:18:41and to make it real my favorite thing about the cast was how they all committed to the most
00:18:48silly thing as if it was life and death and that made it so alive and real and relatable and the two
00:18:58of you had the most spectacular chemistry and i always said that patty heaton's the best wife on
00:19:02television well we're also
00:19:04where i think we're forgetting one little key element that really sold me on you during that
00:19:16first audition that's how desperate i was to get the job yeah well they don't know what you're talking
00:19:20about i kissed him yes there was there was a part where it says she kisses her husband and every
00:19:27other actress just kind of mimed it for some reason she did it nobody and when she walked out i go that's
00:19:35the one patty do you have a favorite episode um yes there was the one where we went away for a weekend
00:19:45and we put the suitcase on the landing we put it there and neither of us would take it up and empty it
00:19:52and we keep waiting for the other person to do it what are you doing what just packing a soda for
00:20:00the road problem that's how you're getting on the airplane yeah yeah i'm traveling light i'm traveling loose
00:20:07what are you a hobo
00:20:11why don't you take the suitcase you know what i don't need it
00:20:19okay you know what
00:20:22yeah good you know what i'm getting it well what's that supposed to mean it means i'll get it
00:20:36i'll be the one who got it oh no no no no no i will get it let the record show that i got it
00:20:47don't let a suitcase filled with cheese be your big fork and spoon
00:21:11this is all your fault
00:21:30when did we get those
00:21:37that's one of my favorite lines ever in the show because that to me is marriage especially
00:21:46a long marriage yes so many people and this is really i think what's not important about comedy
00:21:54but every month at least if not every week somebody either on social media or if i run into them says
00:22:01your show was the one thing that our family could laugh together when my father was sick
00:22:07and it was his favorite thing that's been going on for 30 years and so you know it just feels like
00:22:12we're able to do that
00:22:14that's beautiful
00:22:16we needed to cast ray's uh brother should we bring him out soon
00:22:22trouble in paradise why would you want to hear me complain about ray
00:22:36perhaps we haven't met i'm robert barone
00:22:42hey hey robert everybody loves raymond surprise it's an iguana
00:22:49here you go here you go
00:22:55who is the man
00:22:59i need to say something
00:23:03no wife no children pathetic
00:23:07thanks for the kind words
00:23:11brad garrett everybody
00:23:15i'll come around
00:23:28i'll come around
00:23:29oh boy
00:23:42it is so great to meet you
00:23:45do you have any memories of coming in and meeting ray and
00:23:51i remember auditioning when i read who robert was
00:23:55i just felt i knew this guy you know i was the youngest of three brothers growing up
00:24:01and they were you know much more popular and they had a lot more going for them
00:24:06and i kind of felt like the kid that grew up under the sink you know
00:24:10so uh when i read it i kind of felt like i knew uh who robert was you know
00:24:16yes ray
00:24:17um how could you have to raise your hand it's your show
00:24:20how could you fit under the sink
00:24:25we would write lines
00:24:29jokes
00:24:30and sometimes we didn't need them
00:24:33why because when we would cut
00:24:34to a face
00:24:36yeah
00:24:36they already said it with their look
00:24:38and it was better than anything we could write
00:24:41and the king of this was brad
00:24:42thank you
00:24:43yes
00:24:44that's very sweet
00:24:44just beautiful
00:24:45thank you
00:24:45any uh
00:24:46lovely stories you have from your days on the show
00:24:49not really
00:24:50no
00:24:50many
00:24:53you know what i think of a lot is the episode she's the one
00:24:57where uh the girl i was dating ate the fly
00:25:00oh yes
00:25:01and when you tried to to tell me what you saw in the kitchen
00:25:06that scene was so great but there was a moment where you were
00:25:10yeah i almost passed out
00:25:12tell me you were screaming or you had a some type of
00:25:15well i saw her eat the fly
00:25:16yeah and then you come in and you talk to patty and say
00:25:19i really think she's the one
00:25:21and and i say she's not the one
00:25:22right and
00:25:23and i tell you she ate the fly you don't believe me
00:25:25and i tell the story and again all this pent up
00:25:28and finally i end with
00:25:29she took the fly
00:25:30she put it in
00:25:30and then i scream it
00:25:32she ate it
00:25:33and i hyperventilate it
00:25:35and if you look very closely you see me go
00:25:37oh
00:25:37oh
00:25:38because i almost i felt like i was going to pass out
00:25:40who hyperventilates saying a line
00:25:43hey you got him
00:25:49yeah i guess i did
00:25:51wow good hands
00:25:52all right um
00:25:54oh it's okay i got it
00:25:55okay i'll be about put this down
00:25:56the fly
00:26:17that was flying around
00:26:19angela killed it
00:26:21it fell on the table
00:26:22she put it in a napkin
00:26:24and then she ate it
00:26:27commitment

00:30:01And it still has the dent from where I picked Patty up and threw her into the thing.
00:30:08Very good.
00:30:09So there was someone else in that scene that I knew for a long time before we did the show.
00:30:15I saw her first in a play, and I thought she was really funny, and then I married that girl.
00:30:20I might not be the best person to help.
00:30:22I've spent the last ten years looking for an engagement ring.
00:30:25Oh, Robert, this is my friend Amy. We used to work at the PR firm together.
00:30:29Hi.
00:30:30Hi, Ray.
00:30:31Here we go.
00:30:32Oh, look, this one looks like a heart.
00:30:34Get off your crying and get off your pity pot, Nancy.
00:30:38God.
00:30:39I keep forgetting what a freak show this family is until somebody new comes in and looks at us like that.
00:30:49Wait.
00:30:55Did your mother come over and make things worse as usual?
00:30:59we're like, hey, let's go.
00:31:00We're gonna get a hug together.
00:31:02We're gonna take it out.
00:31:03We're gonna take our wedding together.
00:31:04Can you see, like, your wedding together?
00:31:05You can see, like, my wedding together.
00:31:06There's Monica, Monica!
00:31:08Here's Monica!
00:31:09Monica!
00:31:10Yeah!
00:31:11Yeah!
00:31:12Yeah!
00:31:13Yeah!
00:31:14Yeah!
00:31:15Yeah!
00:31:16Wow!
00:31:17I'll do a hug.
00:31:18Hey!
00:31:19Go, hug!
00:31:20Go, hug!
00:31:21Go, hug!
00:31:22Go, hug!
00:31:23Hello, my darling!
00:31:24My darling!
00:31:25My darling!
00:31:26Aw.
00:31:27Oh, my God, the laughs, the laughs.
00:31:33Hi, Monica.
00:31:35Hi.
00:31:35You can tell Monica brought a slightly different energy to the family, right?
00:31:39You know, just being here is so incredible, right?
00:31:42I can't believe how everyone did the set, like, everybody backstage.
00:31:46And you guys being here, it's so overwhelming.
00:31:50It's unbelievable.
00:31:51Talk about, what about, because first you were recurring, right?
00:31:55Yes.
00:31:55Well, first, I didn't even know I'd be recurring.
00:31:58Can I tell you a little something?
00:31:59Yes.
00:31:59I was pregnant with our daughter, Lily, and I didn't know it.
00:32:03I found out after, so that first, I didn't know that.
00:32:07And flash forward, too, she just got married.
00:32:10And she just got married, Liz.
00:32:11Oh, Lily, Lily got married, yeah.
00:32:15We had a lot of babies on this show.
00:32:17A lot of babies.
00:32:18The moral is, this show made us horny.
00:32:22We were happy.
00:32:25When did you officially know you were a regular?
00:32:28It just started building and building and building.
00:32:31And the Robert and Amy, it really was, you know, I've had only a couple comedy partners in my life.
00:32:37But this one and that writing to this couple was so perfect, wasn't it?
00:32:42It was great.
00:32:43It was so fun, and it was to then be with, like, one of the greatest comic teams of all time, Ray and Debra.
00:32:51That's you guys.
00:32:53Yeah, you were brilliant.
00:32:54So it was really lucky.
00:32:56Do you have a favorite episode?
00:32:57Oh, yeah.
00:32:58All of them you mentioned.
00:32:59There's so many favorite episodes.
00:33:00The one that captures my heart is because my dear, beloved Georgia, who I was very close with, the Georgia Angle, who played my mom.
00:33:08And it's Pat's secret.
00:33:11Oh.
00:33:12Hi.
00:33:13Is everything all right?
00:33:16What, can't sleep?
00:33:19Yeah, me neither.
00:33:19Mind if I bum a ciggy?
00:33:34Robert was smoking.
00:33:35I wasn't.
00:33:36I wasn't.
00:33:37Smell him.
00:33:38Come here.
00:33:39Come here.
00:33:41Oh, my God.
00:33:43Do you know what he's been doing?
00:33:47Smell him.
00:33:49It wasn't lying.
00:33:52It was more like she was just letting off steam so you don't let it out on the person you love.
00:33:58You know?
00:33:59Like Ray.
00:34:00He has to drive around the block a few times every night listening to the radio before he goes home to face Debra.
00:34:18Are you crazy?
00:34:19When I'm angry at my cat, Miss Puss, sometimes I'll sneak up behind her and bark like a dog.
00:34:29I like to blow up fireworks.
00:34:38Pat!
00:34:39I thought since it wasn't a secret anymore.
00:34:51Oh, boy.
00:34:53She was just in heaven, and she always talked to everyone about the writing on this show, working with Phil, for years and years and years after.
00:35:06Beautiful.
00:35:07Thank you for letting us feel like that.
00:35:08You know what?
00:35:08We're so lucky to work with these comedy legends that we idolized.
00:35:13You know, we stand on the shoulders of the great people that came before us.
00:35:17Obviously, people have passed, and we've seen a lot of clips of our mom and dad on the show.
00:35:23But when we come back, we'll talk about them.
00:35:24So, let's talk about the parents.
00:35:48For you and me, it's very personal because they were so based on our parents.
00:35:56Yeah.
00:35:56The mother was more you.
00:35:58I mean, the mother was definitely more you.
00:35:59And the dad was more you, maybe?
00:36:00I used to say, everything you saw Peter do, my father probably did in real life without pants on.
00:36:07Yes.
00:36:08Yes.
00:36:09But I remember just talking about Peter during the pilot episode.
00:36:13So, now, I'm a young guy who just got fired from news radio, and here I am again attempting a show, and I'm nervous.
00:36:21And Peter is the great Peter Boyle, this iconic movie guy.
00:36:25And he's an imposing figure.
00:36:27I didn't know then how sweet he really was, and I hadn't really had a conversation with Peter.
00:36:33And our paths were crossing, and I swear to God, it must have been right here.
00:36:36And he just stops me, and I haven't said anything to him.
00:36:40He just stops me, and I guess he could tell.
00:36:42He could tell that I was a little nervous.
00:36:44And he just looks and he goes, I remember the words, he just goes, it's just like water.
00:36:49Just let it flow.
00:36:51And then he leaves.
00:36:53And at that time, I'm like, what does that mean?
00:36:57And even though, as an actor, I didn't know exactly what that meant, but I do now, just the gesture.
00:37:05The gesture of him reaching out to me.
00:37:07It's everything.
00:37:08Yeah.
00:37:09It's everything.
00:37:10Yeah.
00:37:11Beautiful.
00:37:12Anyway, go ahead.
00:37:12Talk about Doris.
00:37:13We saw a hundred ladies for the part, they all read with that fruit of the month scene.
00:37:21No one came close to Doris Roberts.
00:37:24No one.
00:37:25She was what was in my head and in my life, and was so beyond even.
00:37:34And my real mother used to say, you know, it is a little exaggerated.
00:37:41But you never saw that with Doris, because she was always spot on.
00:37:46She was always a hundred percent believable.
00:37:49Peter, too.
00:37:50Again, I keep reiterating the same thing.
00:37:52We could be the best writers in the world.
00:37:54It wouldn't matter if we didn't have these people and Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts.
00:38:02Let me show you something.
00:38:04Let me show you something.
00:38:11Marie?
00:38:12Oh, well, okay.
00:38:16Oh, Frank, this is wonderful.
00:38:18You dumb bastard.
00:38:23What?
00:38:24Write it out.
00:38:25You put a stop to this now.
00:38:27All right, Dad.
00:38:28Well, let me ask you.
00:38:29She's in a bad mood, what?
00:38:31Two, three days tops?
00:38:33And before you know it, what used to be a bad mood now takes over and becomes her only mood.
00:38:41And then, well, then you become like me.
00:38:44Well, not a day goes by that I don't wish there was a comet screaming towards Earth to bring me sweet relief.
00:39:03That's going to need another coat.
00:39:07Did you say that you like Amy more than Deborah?
00:39:10I am not saying that I like Amy more than Deborah.
00:39:18I know.
00:39:19I know you're not saying it now.
00:39:23But did you say it ever?
00:39:31What if I told you that we have a tape of you saying it, Mom?
00:39:34Give me the tape.
00:39:44What we do in our bedroom is our own business, and I prefer not to be known as the whore of Lindbrook.
00:39:54We can move from Lindbrook.
00:39:55Can't you ever just be quiet?
00:40:02Don't you tell me to be quiet.
00:40:04I have a mind of my own, you know.
00:40:06I can contribute.
00:40:07I'm not just some trophy wife.
00:40:19You're a trophy wife?
00:40:20What contest in hell did I win?
00:40:27You still can't think of anything nice to say about me?
00:40:36How about I sleep on it?
00:40:41It's all jokes.
00:40:42Frank, what are you doing?
00:40:55No, no, no.
00:40:55I need that, Frank.
00:41:10I like you better without the crap on your face.
00:41:12I left my heart
00:41:21In San Francisco
00:41:28Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
00:41:31My wife thinks I'm in the bathroom.
00:41:32Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
00:41:42I think we all have special memories of each one of them, you know?
00:42:01Doris could drink everybody under the table.
00:42:03Champagne, that was her choice.
00:42:07Pretty good.
00:42:07Never stopped working, right?
00:42:08Never stopped working on hiatuses.
00:42:10Yeah.
00:42:11Always working.
00:42:12Taking acting classes.
00:42:13And directing plays.
00:42:1590.
00:42:15Yes.
00:42:16And Peter was pretty much the opposite of that guy.
00:42:20He was kind of a renaissance man.
00:42:24Yes, he wasn't really like that character.
00:42:27Two things about him you may not know.
00:42:29He studied to be a monk.
00:42:31Yes.
00:42:32I asked him, what made you give it up?
00:42:33He said there weren't enough girls there.
00:42:36And best man at his wedding was John Lennon.
00:42:41Yeah.
00:42:42Yeah.
00:42:43How about that?
00:42:44As a matter of fact, the girl he married is here tonight.
00:42:48Lorraine Boyle is sitting right up there.
00:42:50Lorraine.
00:42:50Where are you?
00:42:51That's me.
00:42:52Yay.
00:42:55Yeah.
00:42:57Well, you know, it's funny.
00:43:00I remember when Peter Boyle was cast and we were, like, so excited because we're going
00:43:06to be able to play every week with this legend.
00:43:09And Ray went, you know, I think it's so fitting that the guy who's playing your dad was young
00:43:15Frankenstein.
00:43:18Well, they became our parents in more ways than one on the show.
00:43:25Yes.
00:43:25To Doris and Peter.
00:43:27Yes.
00:43:27Yay.
00:43:28Cheers.
00:43:29Yes.
00:43:29Cheers.
00:43:30Cheers.
00:43:31Bye.
00:43:34Love you.
00:43:35Love you.
00:43:48Hey.
00:43:50Good?
00:43:51Yeah.
00:43:52Yeah, good.
00:43:55Even better the second time now that my tongue's not scared.
00:44:00Everything happened over food.
00:44:01There was so much food on the show.
00:44:02And it just sort of taught you that, like, lessons are learned and arguments are made when you're
00:44:08sitting down to eat.
00:44:10You learn a lot about each other.
00:44:12You should ask Debra how she makes this.
00:44:17I should ask Debra.
00:44:20I should ask Debra.
00:44:22Give me that.
00:44:24Food is, you know, it's family.
00:44:38Gathering around the table, just like love.
00:44:41You better not have started that cake.
00:44:44That cake is for all of us.
00:44:46I'm coming over.
00:44:47Food is love, because food is bringing people together.
00:44:53And so, yeah, we hit it all the time.
00:44:55A man needs chicken.
00:44:59Food is everything, and that's because that's Phil's obsession.
00:45:02For Phil, food was the most important thing, and it's the great connector.
00:45:06We actually had a lot to eat on the plane.
00:45:09Adesso mangiate.
00:45:12So, off we go to Italy.
00:45:14And, of course, the character of Ray Barone is miserable.
00:45:16Ray, this is the Spanish steps.
00:45:19Where's the Spanish elevator?
00:45:21But I remember this one moment.
00:45:23Pizza.
00:45:24Oh, thank you.
00:45:26And that piece of pizza, when he put it in his mouth.
00:45:30Wow.
00:45:31It's okay.
00:45:32Ray has this epiphany about everything.
00:45:34This is like the best pizza I ever had, man.
00:45:36He realizes the great thing, which is his family, the culture, the people.
00:45:42All those things are actually truly beautiful, and he's been missing them the whole episode.
00:45:46Look, we're in the kitchen.
00:45:52Yeah, we are.
00:45:53Food was a very important part of the show.
00:45:56I think Marie held sway over the entire family because she was a great cook and a...
00:46:02Who wasn't?
00:46:03Aw.
00:46:03But we should talk about our children.
00:46:08Daddy, daddy!
00:46:09Catch me!
00:46:11Ah!
00:46:14Yeah!
00:46:15Everybody say cavities!
00:46:17Cavities!
00:46:19Mommy, that man's smoking.
00:46:22Narc.
00:46:23You look like you're doing pretty good here.
00:46:25You don't need my help, do you?
00:46:26Yes, I do.
00:46:27All right, don't worry.
00:46:28Daddy's here to help you.
00:46:31You can't make me.
00:46:32Look, I'm your father.
00:46:33You have to do what I say.
00:46:34What?
00:46:34I'm you!
00:46:36Live!
00:46:37Live!
00:46:39Come on, guys.
00:46:40We're not snorkeling.
00:46:41We're eating.
00:46:42Okay?
00:46:42It's fine.
00:46:43I'm fine.
00:46:45It's fine.
00:46:45We were just, uh...
00:46:49You know what?
00:46:55Madeline and Sullivan Sweeten, are you here?
00:47:12Wow.
00:47:13Everybody's grown up.
00:47:14They, they, in the blink of an eye, your kids grow up.
00:47:18Hi, you guys.
00:47:19Hi.
00:47:21So emotional.
00:47:22I really were.
00:47:24I know.
00:47:24Do you want to sit on my lap?
00:47:28What was it like to grow up here with us, with us maniacs?
00:47:31I mean, I don't know.
00:47:32It just felt like what we were supposed to do.
00:47:35I don't think we understood, right, how impactful the show was or how impactful what we were doing
00:47:41was, so, yeah, I would get upset that, you know, I couldn't be in the school play.
00:47:45Yeah, but looking back, you know, I wouldn't change anything about it.
00:47:49That's so great to hear.
00:47:50It's so good to see you guys.
00:47:51It really is.
00:47:52Tell us what you're doing now.
00:47:53I just had a baby.
00:47:55Yeah!
00:47:55Yeah!
00:47:56I brought him here with me today.
00:48:04My husband are in the back.
00:48:05Oh, great.
00:48:06They're excited to meet you.
00:48:07You guys were always in a good mood.
00:48:11We had lots of candy.
00:48:13But you were also, I want to say, fantastic.
00:48:17We were on set with some of the most amazing comedic actors in the world, so it was, you
00:48:23know, we were learning from everybody how to do it, and that's the only reason that we
00:48:27were, you know, any good at it, I think.
00:48:29Yeah, and I definitely feel like I carried that experience through my whole life.
00:48:32You know, I try to bring that kind of comedy with me wherever I go.
00:48:36Do you have a favorite episode?
00:48:38You know, it's funny.
00:48:39I'm not in my favorite episode.
00:48:41Now, as an adult, as I've been watching it back, I found there's so many more adult
00:48:45things that I didn't realize when I was a kid.
00:48:49And my favorite episode is Marie's statue.
00:48:52Oh!
00:48:54I give you this.
00:48:59Isn't it a bit too ladylike?
00:49:10Great.
00:49:11See?
00:49:11Oh, now I do.
00:49:13It looks like something, though.
00:49:14What does it look like?
00:49:18Hey, get close.
00:49:19You can even touch it.
00:49:20I'm fine.
00:49:23I gotta tell you, I don't know what the hell this is, but I love it.
00:49:30Hello.
00:49:31Raymond Barone?
00:49:32Mm-hmm.
00:49:33I'm Sister Anne.
00:49:34This is Sister Beth.
00:49:35We're here to pick up the sculpture.
00:49:36Forgive me, but is that not a sculptor of...
00:49:45What?
00:49:47Oh, my God.
00:49:55I'm a lesbian.
00:49:58Oh, that's right.
00:50:02But what happened to the sculpture?
00:50:04I think it was in Doris's backyard.
00:50:06Oh, yeah.
00:50:07I think her grandkids used it as a slide.
00:50:10That's wrong.
00:50:18Sullivan, you've got one.
00:50:20Oh, I've got plenty of good memories, you know, playing tag in the bleachers and, you know,
00:50:25the prop room.
00:50:26But I think I'm a sucker for a happy ending, and the final scene with everybody gathered
00:50:29around the table has got to be my favorite memory.
00:50:32Like we are now.
00:50:34Hey, what do you got there, French toast?
00:50:35No, no, no, no, don't worry, I'll make something.
00:50:37Yay!
00:50:39All right, Uncle Rob, it's hungry and big, and if you don't want to get eaten, move out
00:50:41of the way.
00:50:42Thank you, darling.
00:50:42This is inside.
00:50:44What do we have here?
00:50:45Here, have some food in the meantime.
00:50:48Ah, some of the grapes, so much grapes.
00:50:50Right.
00:50:50I think it's getting a little too crowded in here.
00:50:52Yeah, it is.
00:50:53You know what?
00:50:55We need a bigger table.
00:50:56Yes.
00:50:57All right.
00:50:57Who would like some chocolate chip pancakes?
00:51:01Woo!
00:51:06The philosophy of we need a bigger table is everything to me.
00:51:12You know, the family is a microcosm of your families, we hope, and of wherever you live
00:51:20and our country and the world.
00:51:22We need a bigger table.
00:51:23So that's the idea.
00:51:25That's why I wanted it to be the last thing.
00:51:32Can we mention also...
00:51:34Sawyer, yeah.
00:51:36So Sawyer, of course, is no longer with us, and we miss him.
00:51:39And he, just like you were, just this bright energy, light.
00:51:44None of us really expected what happened.
00:51:46But, you know, I try to think about the good moments, and oftentimes that's here on the set.
00:51:53I just think it's so important, any conversation that we're having about Sawyer, we're very passionate
00:51:57in our family about suicide prevention.
00:52:00It is the second leading cause of death between the ages of 18 to 25, but 90% of people who seek treatment are cured.
00:52:08And so many of the messages that we get are people saying,
00:52:12I'm so grateful to have heard about your brother.
00:52:15He saved my life.
00:52:16Is there an organization that you work with on behalf of Sawyer where people could reach out to you?
00:52:22We work with the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.
00:52:25That's our main, our main place.
00:52:27Okay.
00:52:28Yeah.
00:52:28But, you know, people can grab a Sawyer t-shirt.
00:52:31We do t-shirts every year, and all of the proceeds go there.
00:52:35Great.
00:52:36Yeah.
00:52:36Beautiful.
00:52:46You're not getting off.
00:52:48Don't push me.
00:52:50Get out!
00:52:55I almost didn't know how lucky I was working with amazing actors.
00:53:06That allowed you then to take these big swings with physical comedy.
00:53:11And then the actors, just so gifted.
00:53:15Robert, let me tell you what they did, okay?
00:53:17Oh, I am tired, sweetness.
00:53:30Oh, yeah.
00:53:31Oh.
00:53:33Oh, baby, does that feel good?
00:53:37Oh.
00:53:38Oh.
00:53:39Hmm.
00:53:40Come here.
00:53:40If Debra has to give him permission to make more decisions, and then it has to spectacularly
00:53:57end badly.
00:53:58Debra's going all nutty on me over here, but what else is new?
00:54:01That means Ray's got to, I don't know, like, set the kitchen off.
00:54:03The laugh inside the studio was, like, nothing I ever heard.
00:54:20Hey, what the...
00:54:20Fire!
00:54:21Fire in the fire!
00:54:23Famous one was Patty dealing with that Thanksgiving turkey, and that was all her.
00:54:29Huh?
00:54:30Yeah.
00:54:30Debra is wrestling with a turkey that keeps falling, and you can write that on the page.
00:54:35It just looks like an action line.
00:54:38And then when Patty Heaton does it, you look at the writers around you and go, look how
00:54:44good we are.
00:54:55Okay, yes, ma'am.
00:54:56Hi, my question for you is, do you guys have a favorite line?
00:54:59And if so, can you reenact it for us now?
00:55:02Favorite line.
00:55:04One favorite line.
00:55:05I have one.
00:55:06Yes.
00:55:07What did you do?
00:55:09LAUGHTER
00:55:10What did you do?
00:55:20LAUGHTER
00:55:21Very well done.
00:55:23I...
00:55:23I have a favorite line.
00:55:25And it wasn't...
00:55:26I didn't say it, but it was said to me, and it was from nobody on here.
00:55:30It was from a day character who was in a hospital bed, and I said something to her.
00:55:35I know it.
00:55:35And she looked at me and went, you tricky, tricky white boy.
00:55:40LAUGHTER
00:55:40LAUGHTER
00:55:41You want to get better?
00:55:47You got to take your pills.
00:55:48LAUGHTER
00:55:48Oh, you tricky, tricky white boy.
00:55:52LAUGHTER
00:55:53What has happened to you in real life since the show's ended that you thought to yourself,
00:56:02that would make a really great episode?
00:56:04Yeah.
00:56:05Our friend Lou Schneider, who's one of the great writers of the show,
00:56:09he tells a story about how he was on vacation with the family,
00:56:13and he dropped his keys down the elevator shaft,
00:56:18right in the crack of the elevator door,
00:56:20and he was freaking out because it's the car keys, the house keys, everything,
00:56:24and he was really going nuts, and his wife said,
00:56:27this is great, maybe you could use it on the show!
00:56:31You know, this...
00:56:32We already did the episode where Ray loses his ring in the...
00:56:36in the... in the thing,
00:56:37so this is not good for the show,
00:56:40this is just something...
00:56:42LAUGHTER
00:56:42Hey, guys, my question is actually for Brad Garrett.
00:56:48When Judy took you to the dance club...
00:56:51Yes.
00:56:51...you have this amazing, iconic dance.
00:56:53I wanted to ask if we can recreate it right now and boogie down a little.
00:56:56LAUGHTER
00:56:57Oh, you and him?
00:56:59What?
00:57:01You in for it?
00:57:02Come on, Dad.
00:57:03Come on.
00:57:03All right, all right, all right, all right.
00:57:22Go Hopper!
00:57:23Go Hopper!
00:57:24Go Hopper!
00:57:25Go Hopper!
00:57:26Go Hopper!
00:57:27Go Hopper!
00:57:28Go Hopper!
00:57:29Woo!
00:57:30Yeah!
00:57:31Everybody look at this!
00:57:33That is good!
00:57:34That is good!
00:57:37That is good!
00:57:47When Raymond left for Hollywood,
00:57:50me and my brother Bobby decided to, um,
00:57:53put a little note in his suitcase,
00:57:55because we were going to miss him, you know?
00:57:57And I didn't hear anything,
00:57:58and neither did my brother Robert, for nine years.
00:58:01I didn't know if he read it.
00:58:03And then the final show comes,
00:58:06and it was very, very dramatic and, you know, emotional.
00:58:10And in his speech, he says,
00:58:13I want to read something.
00:58:15This is a little note that my brother, both my brothers gave me
00:58:20when I got a beefing in New York.
00:58:22I'm saying, oh, my God, you saved it?
00:58:25They snuck this into my, um, my luggage.
00:58:28What I wrote to him was, um, I hope you remember this verse,
00:58:32what does it profit a man?
00:58:34What does it profit a man?
00:58:36He gains the whole world, but loses his soul.
00:58:40He had tears in his eyes, and he goes, um,
00:58:43I hope I did that, God.
00:58:45And, uh, it was very moving.
00:58:47And I, and I think he did.
00:58:48I think God would be very happy with him.
00:58:51Thank you so much for being with us, uh, tonight.
00:58:58We're so thrilled to be with you.
00:59:00We owe everything to you guys.
00:59:01You know, when we started, it was a show about a family,
00:59:04four families, and after a little while,
00:59:07it was being made by a family.
00:59:09What you don't see are all the people
00:59:11that really made the show with us,
00:59:14some of whom we haven't seen since we went off the air.
00:59:18So if we could, let's bring most of them out.
00:59:30I thought I got the joke.
00:59:48We got one little more thing we want to share with the audience.
00:59:56It's kind of like a gag reel.
00:59:58So we want to share that with you
01:00:00and with everybody who made the show.
01:00:02Oh!
01:00:04What? What's wrong?
01:00:06What happened?
01:00:08You kicked me!
01:00:10I did?
01:00:12I did?
01:00:13Oh!
01:00:14Right in the garden of good and evil.
01:00:17Right in Geppetto's workshop.
01:00:19Right in Granny's apples.
01:00:21Right in the Hard Rock cafe.
01:00:25You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:00:27Wherever it was, I'll bet it was dark.
01:00:29I'm just a simple man who tried to make a difference.
01:00:45I still put my pants on one leg at a time.
01:00:49Yeah, but you should stop when I reach your nipples.
01:01:01You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:01:03A little shop of horrors.
01:01:08Okay.
01:01:09You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:01:10Hmm?
01:01:11Goldens?
01:01:12Oh!
01:01:13Oh!
01:01:14Oh!

01:01:16Oh!
01:01:17Oh!
01:01:18Oh!
01:01:19Oh!
01:01:20Oh!
01:01:21Oh!
01:01:22Oh!

01:01:39Oh!
01:01:40Yeah.
01:01:41Oh!
01:01:46Hey Marie, I knew you named them but I didn't know you fed them!
01:01:49It's like I-I've entered a world where ladies want Ray!
01:01:56Bert!
01:01:57Ray Bert!
01:01:58Yeah, yeah, yeah!
01:01:59Yeah, Ray Bert!
01:02:00You know what?
01:02:01With your penis and my money, we're unstoppable!
01:02:03You better have a lot of money.
01:02:13To be honest, Debra, it's not a style I'd ever wear.
01:02:19Nice try, though.
01:02:22Put it on.
01:02:31Thank you, everybody.
01:02:33Do you want to say goodbye?
01:02:34I do.
01:02:35I want to say to all of you and to all of you, I used to say this to Ray all the time, thanks
01:02:45for the good life, and we wish the same to all of you.
01:02:50Thank you, everybody.
01:02:51Thank you, everybody.
01:02:52Yay!
