00:00All right, Clint, we talked about this and kind of talked around,
00:05and I think there's a space where we can go deeper on this,
00:08and obviously we love hearing from the people, 713-572-4610,
00:13YouTube and Twitch, even the sensitive ones.
00:15We love hearing from the people.
00:19How do you feel about this?
00:22And maybe you disagree with the premise of it anyway,
00:24but do you think – are you okay with the Texans treating C.J. Stroud
00:30basically like a game manager?
00:33Because that's what it feels like to me for the most part.
00:37This feels very different than his first year where it felt like –
00:42and not even felt like – my man D'Amico, I'll never forget after the Colts game
00:46that got them into the playoffs that one of the divisions said,
00:49whatever we're going to do is going to be because of C.J. Stroud.
00:52We're going to win because of C.J. Stroud.
00:55And, Clint, it feels like it is a shift, obviously, with the number one defense,
01:00but it does feel like it is more of a just don't turn it over, you know,
01:06just don't be the reason why we lost and not as much the reason why we win,
01:11which to me generally feels very game manager-like.
01:16And it's worked, right?
01:18They've won nine in a row.
01:19They've gotten the playoffs.
01:20They've won 12 games.
01:22They've won 12 games that people really look at in this field
01:24that could get to a Super Bowl.
01:25But what's your feeling?
01:27You think the Texans should be approaching C.J. Stroud this way?
01:32Yeah, no, absolutely I think they should.
01:34I mean, the moment that you hired Nick Kaley, knowing that this was the system,
01:41yeah, I mean, it's – the quarterbacks can – I mean, he's got to fit the system.
01:47He's got to, you know, wholeheartedly, blindly commit to what it is they want him to do.
01:55And so whether you look at the system or you look at a couple of factors
02:00that I think you marry them together and you've landed where you are,
02:04you look – I mean, pressure and quarterback sacks became a major problem.
02:08You didn't fix the offensive line by spending money on proven talent.
02:12And so whether you look at Nick Kaley schematically, philosophically,
02:17what he believes in doing, it's – it is – it's going to be an interesting fit
02:27for C.J. Stroud long-term to say the least.
02:30I think that's fair.
02:31And game management is what they want him to do to an extreme, right?
02:35So whether you look at it from Kaley's offensive mind and schematically and, you know,
02:39philosophically what they want to do, or you look at it from the major problems
02:44that was sacks and pressures last year to not – not, like, fixing the offensive line.
02:50I'm talking about with proven players that were on the market,
02:52proven veteran free agents kind of deal and shoring up the offensive line.
02:56And that's why you've arrived at, hey, man, the only way you survive
02:58and the only way we can even keep our head above water off and basically, you know,
03:06I mean, tiptoe our way through games with a great defense, regardless of how or why,
03:11this is – the situation that they're in is exactly, you know, they signed up for this.
03:18They signed up for this.
03:19I mean, they signed up for this when they hired Nick Kaley.
03:22They signed up for him being a game man.
03:24Absolutely.
03:24And they signed up with it when they didn't fix the offensive line.
03:26Absolutely, 100%.
03:27He has no other option.
03:28And whether – he has no other option than right now to be as elite of a game manager
03:38as he can possibly be.
03:39And that is exactly what the offense asked him to do.
03:41So, yeah, I think this is exactly what they should do with him.
03:45I just – I despise it.
03:48Oh, I don't like – I don't like the fit.
03:50Well, let me get this.
03:51Are you – are you saying that this is an offense?
03:56Because someone just texted in, they aren't treating C.J. like a game manager.
04:01This is a game manager offense.
04:03I will disagree a little bit like that.
04:06Like, I mean, they take the ball out of the quarterbacks.
04:08I mean, they try to minimize risk.
04:13I mean, later in games.
04:16I would argue that that's the number one job of a game managing quarterback is to minimize risk.
04:21But, I mean, they minimize it where they're not even – there's not even – there's not even a chance to go and make plays
04:28because it's handoff or whatever.
04:29Yeah.
04:31Are you saying – let me get this.
04:32Are you saying that this offense will only allow for a game manager?
04:39Or, like, is this an offense where – like, you can say – like, where you can say, no, we're going to win because this guy makes plays
04:49and not just because, hey, man, just don't kind of mess it up because that's what it feels like they're doing with him.
04:54In this offense, the number one thing you have to be is an elite game manager.
04:59You can have a great arm or a lesser arm.
05:01You can be a great athlete or a lesser athlete.
05:03None of that – all of that is secondary to, hey, we're going to ask you to take as little risk as you can,
05:12be smarter than the opponent, be extremely efficient, and be super calculated when you take shots
05:19and if you take shots.
05:20The game will dictate whether you need to take shots.
05:23It could be a three-point game, but if we feel like we're in complete control
05:27and our defense is controlling their offense, we're going to choke this thing way down
05:30and it's going to be more important to milk the clock than it is to score points.
05:35That is what this offense is and the philosophy behind what they're doing here.
05:41in Houston, and I believe that, as I said yesterday, in this offense,
05:47I don't think there will be a day when we're talking about C.J. Stroud
05:49being a top-ten quarterback again.
05:52Legitimately.
05:53Because of the offense.
05:56Because of the system.
05:57It is going to require deep runs in the playoffs and championships
06:01for a quarterback in this kind of system to get the credit that he deserves.
06:08I just –
06:09Ron, it is going to take 25 touchdowns or 30 touchdowns and four interceptions
06:16for him to be viewed as a top-ten guy.
06:19And as I said when it happened, his rookie year,
06:23it's going to be unbelievably difficult for C.J. Stroud to duplicate the numbers
06:27that he put up his rookie year.
06:28Listen, who would you say in this system, quarterback-wise, has been the best?
06:36Brady.
06:36Brady.
06:37You can argue he's been one of the only ones that's been worth a damn.
06:40And I'm not saying that C.J. needs to be up to Brady's level,
06:45which is right now the best we've ever seen.
06:47But I never – probably halfway through his career, I never looked at it and thought,
06:54boy, they're winning.
06:56They're winning and Tom's just kind of riding along.
07:00Like, I thought they were winning because they got Tom Brady.
07:05And regardless of the offense, it seems like they put the responsibility
07:11and everything on his shoulders.
07:13Like, that was the driving force to winning for the Patriots.
07:17Maybe not early when they had that defense and it was Tom's first several years.
07:22But I don't know, man.
07:24Towards the back end of that first dynasty, that first run, all the way through,
07:29he was the driving force in that offense.
07:32Oh, I agree.
07:33And, like –
07:33I mean, once they were winning Super Bowls and winning games, like,
07:37at that kind of clip, and he was, like, the best we've ever seen in the system.
07:42Yeah, I agree.
07:44That's what I'm saying.
07:45Like, I think C.J.'s got to make a –
07:46the Texans have to make a deep – multiple deep runs,
07:50and they've got to win a Super Bowl before C.J. Stroud starts getting the credit
07:54that he deserves.
07:54It's got to be, hey, this kid's a winner.
07:57Hey, this kid is unbelievably competitive.
08:00This kid makes –
08:02everybody is the smallest guy on the field.
08:05I mean, he is the most cerebral quarterback we've ever seen.
08:09He's never wrong.
08:11He lives and breathes over an extended period of time,
08:14this efficient brand of ball that's minimizing risk.
08:17Before he's ever given the credit that he deserves,
08:20there's not going to be another year where he goes out there
08:22and throws 30-plus touchdowns and four interceptions
08:24and throws for five – and flirts for 5,000 yards.
08:29I just wonder if the mindset will change for them.
08:33Because the mindset right now, to me, is play through our defense.
08:38And I'm not saying it's not like a bad thing, system or not.
08:42It's play through our defense.
08:44And I think if they were in whatever system,
08:48they probably would be doing things that says play through our defense.
08:53And, again, as I said, they've got the number one defense in football.
08:58You can understand that.
09:00But, man, it just feels weird to watch that guy with guys like Nico Collins,
09:08that talent.
09:09And it seems like they are making the decision to make the –
09:17I think B. Scott has said that make the Ferrari drive in a school zone.
09:23And I don't even know if he's a Ferrari, but, damn it, he's a nice Acura.
09:29I mean, he's –
09:31I mean, he's shown to be a lack.
09:35Like something –
09:36And, like, they're –
09:38It's like they're a –
09:39Like, I don't –
09:40I think clearly him and Davis,
09:43they were pushing the quarterback position
09:45and what they're expecting those guys to do the same way.
09:49Now, the only time that we really get a chance to see it
09:52is when all hell breaks down
09:54and CJ's got to run away from pass rushers
09:57and then he makes plays, you know, off script and gets down.
10:01That's the difference.
10:02But they're not approaching.
10:04There is not second halves, Clint, where they have the lead
10:08and the approach is let's stomp them.
10:12Let's stomp their throats in and end it.
10:15And, CJ, go end it because we are riding you.
10:20I've watched the Jags do it.
10:21I watched them in Denver have a lead in the second half
10:25and put the ball in Trevor's hands to make the lead bigger
10:30and to go and win because of Trevor.
10:32And I think CJ should be looked at that way.
10:35But it's like –
10:37I just – I just – I just hate –
10:41I just hate –
10:42I think there's going to be –
10:43I think there's a real internal struggle.
10:48And I don't think it's just one-sided.
10:50I think it's all the way around.
10:52I think there's a real –
10:55just overall, generally speaking, broad brush here.
10:58Paint with a broad brush.
10:59Does CJ Stroud, is he comfortable?
11:02Is he happy?
11:03Is he a good fit in what Nick Caley's doing offensively?
11:06I think that's a conversation that's going to go on
11:09if it's not already going on between him and David Muligheta.
11:12I think it's a conversation that's going on between D'Amico,
11:14Joe, Kaylee, and Nick Casario as well on both sides of the deal is –
11:21because it's not –
11:22we're talking too often the physical ability being limited.
11:26Well, yeah, like what's pissed me off is the mindset of, like,
11:31I don't know that there's another quarterback in –
11:36any quarterback that we think has the skill level of CJ
11:39and not just the skill level but shown it,
11:41shown what he's capable of doing, that if they get a lead,
11:47whoop, let's just walk –
11:50let's try to drag ourselves to that lead.
11:53What was that again?
11:55Whoop.
11:56Chris Berman, sorry.
11:57I like that.
11:57Just drag ourselves to that lead.
11:59Yeah, yeah.
12:00Like I'm looking at this thing, right, like help, Brock Purdy?
12:03He's putting it in Brock's hands.
12:06Oh, I mean, look, go up the coast a bit.
12:10Old buddy in Seattle.
12:12Putting it in his hands.
12:13And that guy was seeing ghosts a couple years ago.
12:15He's got a great defense.
12:16Yeah.
12:17Like, go look at their – like, he's got a great defense.
12:19Putting it in his hands.
12:22I just – whoo.
12:23I understand there – and I can – again, I understand they've won nine straight.
12:29This defense is nasty.
12:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:31But it's –
12:34I agree with you.
12:35Look, I'm a Texans fan and –
12:37They play like this with Davis Mills.
12:39I got it.
12:39I agree.
12:40I believe the Texans product would be significantly better
12:44if it was an offense that fit C.J. Stroud.
12:47Just from a standpoint of, hey, we're going to stay aggressive.
12:50We're going to stay aggressive.
12:52We're going to drive the ball down.
12:53Now, I'm not saying we're going to talk about five-headed monsters
12:55and drop back and carelessly rip the ball down the field.
12:58But these guys, to an extreme, are patient, check the ball down.
13:05We're going to establish the run, like, to an extreme.
13:08I don't want what we saw last year.
13:10Like, I don't want them putting it in the head of C.J. Stroud.
13:12We're going to stretch the field.
13:13We're going to take shots.
13:14We're going to be aggressive.
13:15I don't want that.
13:17But just, you know, there just is a lot of – to your point,
13:23there's a lot of tampering down instead of, hey, man, let's go play football.
13:28When you got that.
13:29Yeah.
13:29And Nico.
13:30And you do got a Ferrari in the garage.
13:32And Nico.
13:32You got –
13:33Yeah.
