Home Office minister, Mike Tapp, says that new counter-terror powers will help the UK "take out the smuggling gangsters" as well as reducing small boat crossings. 00:00Yeah, this is a really important measures coming into play today.
00:04Now, I've worked against criminal gangs in the past, but also in a counter-terror role.
00:07So I've seen how these counter-terror powers can make a difference.
00:11It's about getting to the criminals and the terrorists before they act.
00:16And today, those on the borders will have the powers to seize mobile phones and SIM cards
00:22when people cross on small boats.
00:24And what that does is it gives us access, potentially, to more intelligence
00:29so that we can work upstream and domestically to take out the smuggling gangsters
00:34and reduce the small boat crossings.
