00:00so i uh put the subtitle on here of talent resources and authority on loan from god
00:08if you're familiar with rush limbaugh's radio show he used to say that he was talent on loan
00:14from god tongue in cheek of course i mean he was a very smart guy but still just somewhat uh
00:21mocking himself and everybody else along with it but this chapter has a lot of stuff about
00:27what do you do with the things that god has given you if god has given you authority
00:31what is your responsibility to god in exercising that authority if he's giving you material
00:37possessions if he's giving you any kind of talent these are things that god has given you for a
00:44purpose not for your own for your own benefit and it's it's fine for you to benefit from them but
00:50that's not why god gives them to you he gives them to you to use for his purposes for his kingdom
00:55and this chapter has a lot to say on that topic the wicked flee when no one pursues but the
01:01righteous are bold as a lion you can think of some of the latter chapters of deuteronomy
01:07in this where god is talking about how you know if israel is going to keep his commandments
01:11then they will have victory over their enemies they'll have rain in its season the crops will
01:16be plentiful they'll they'll have lots of children and their enemy will flee from them
01:22one man will chase a hundred men a hundred men will chase a thousand uh it's really that kind of
01:30thing the wicked flee when no one pursues and the righteous are bold as a lion but on the other hand
01:36right after that he goes through this series of six or seven depending on how you count stages
01:42of wickedness and refusal to repent and each stage gets worse than the one before
01:47so that if israel has fallen into apostasy and idolatry then god says you know all these terrible
01:55things are going to happen to you your crops will fail your enemies will defeat you and you will flee
02:00from before your enemies but i'll give you a chance to repent and if you repent everything's fine if you
02:06don't it's going to get worse until eventually god kicks them out of the land and they go into exile
02:12until they're ready to come back which is where they've been since babylon we have been grafted
02:18into israel we have been in exile since the babylonian dispersion you know there was a brief period where
02:25people came back to the land just so the so that the messiah could be born there and as soon as his
02:32ministry was done and the apostles had had begun spreading the gospel out to the whole world
02:37the temple was destroyed again jerusalem was destroyed and the people scattered again
02:42but the people had never come back into their inheritance even then and even the rabbis will
02:49acknowledge that they never came out of exile that the northern kingdom has been in exile since the
02:55assyrian dispersion in i think the 8th century bc and judah has been in exile since i believe the 6th
03:03century bc and this applies on a personal level too of course not just the national level you know
03:09whether it's because of a guilty conscience or because uh the wicked just assume that everyone
03:14else is is as wicked as they are they believe that everyone is trying to catch them in the act
03:19or pull one over on them the righteous on the other hand don't really have any reason to suspect that
03:26someone is after them and usually don't assume that everyone else is up to no good uh it's you know
03:34the human nature is is um what's the word uh projection if you have wickedness in your heart
03:41you start to assume that everyone else does too if your heart is righteous you start to assume that
03:48everyone else or at least the people around you have righteous motives at the very least
03:52it's not always true of course in fact it's almost never completely true but that does that clear
04:00conscience does give the righteous the ability to act boldly where the wicked would fail to act or
04:08they would act in a surreptitious or underhanded manner because that's what they're expecting from
04:15other people now let's move on to verse two when a land transgresses it has many rulers but with a
04:22man of understanding and knowledge its stability stability will long continue now the land it's
04:28not talking necessarily about the physical land because obviously the physical land the dirt can't sin
04:34and that's what transgression means to transgress is to violate something so the land is a stand-in
04:43for the people in biblical interpretation hermeneutic speak it's called a metonymy so when the people
04:52transgress it has many rulers but with a man of understanding and knowledge its stability will
04:58long continue people and their rulers create a positive feedback whether that's you know in a
05:04monarchy with a king or in a democracy it's probably even more true in a democracy
05:09or in a republic i mean there's never been a true democracy in in history except in very small
05:15limited circumstances somebody will always have stronger will or more resources in order to impose
05:24his will on other people that's always going to be the case and so a true democracy will never exist
05:30as long as as long as people are people but as i was saying the people and their rulers create this
05:36positive feedback loop if the people are wicked they get wicked rulers and the wicked rulers promote
05:41more wickedness among the people and you can certainly see this at work in the united states today
05:47if you look at the states within our country that have a very left-leaning population they elect
05:57or well they elect left-leaning leaders or people who lean that way rise in power whether you know
06:07whether people are appointed or elected and if these days i mean there might have been a time when left
06:14meant you know having sympathy for the poor or you know wanting everybody to be treated fairly
06:20left today is essentially a synonym for evil and wicked don't throw stones it's just the way it is
06:27and if you disagree with that all you have to do is look at the things that the left believes
06:34and compare them against what scripture says let me skip down to the end of the chapter here real quick
06:41verse 26 whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered
06:48throughout the book of proverbs wisdom is equated with god's commandments
06:53if you want to be wise you will study and you will live out god's commandments
06:58and anything that you might think or desire that is contrary to god's law is foolishness
07:06it is not wisdom it's not justice it's the opposite so the left talks about justice you know
07:12especially social justice but that's not really what they're talking about they're using those words
07:18deceptively they're lying everything about leftist political philosophy is a lie and i never get
07:28political on these talks of course so this is totally out of character and that's sarcasm
07:35so talking about verse two the result of wicked people promoting wicked rulers and wicked rulers
07:44promoting wickedness among the people is that they don't tend to last very long they tend to create
07:50chaos and injustice which creates unrest which then creates chaos and so those people they tend to be
07:58overthrown there's a lot of competition in that kind of system and all that chaotic
08:04that chaos in the ranks creates a chaotic leadership structure throughout the entire system
08:09and everybody suffers for it its instability will last a long time whereas if you have righteous
08:19rulers rulers with understanding and knowledge which is really equated to an understanding and a fear
08:26of god and obedience to his commandments then you'll have stability you will have real justice
08:31and unfortunately that doesn't last long either because people are people and we all tend to give in to our
08:40base or base desires over time and that's a much easier route moral entropy is our default the longer we
08:50exist the more wicked we become and it takes concerted effort coordination between the rulers and
08:59law enforcement whatever form that may take in a culture and the people and religious leaders they
09:05almost work together to promote obedience to god's commandments and if they don't then that entropy takes
09:12over and morality goes downhill slippery slope isn't an unusual thing it's the default it's the way all
09:21humans have lived let's see verse three a poor man who oppresses the poor is a beating rain that leaves no food a poor man
09:31who oppresses the poor you see this a lot in communist countries where people are encouraged to spy on their
09:41neighbors and report them they're encouraged to be jealous about the resources that each other that he other people have I may be
09:50getting my historic terms mixed up but in the ukraine I think it was before world war ii it was called the
09:58holodomir the communists would stir up all kinds of envy and resentment against landowners and so this would
10:08give them the social justification or the social backing to go in and confiscate the land from these farmers
10:16farmers and either send the farmers out to siberia or make them poor and then chop up the land and put
10:25tenant farmers on it farmers who didn't own the land had no interest in taking care of it had no idea
10:31how to farm and they ended up starving millions of people because of this absurd foolishness there's
10:39probably it's hard to see a worse thing than a poor man who oppresses another poor man
10:45those landowners they weren't necessarily wealthy they were what we would consider middle class
10:50being a farmer was the normal occupation of for most of humanity all over the world at that time
10:57most people still didn't live in cities the average family was were farmers and so these weren't
11:04these weren't poor people attacking with the wealthy these were poor and middle-class people
11:12attacking other poor and middle-class people and this is a favorite tool of
11:17populist politicians and proponents of democracy because democracy is a great way to let
11:26to manipulate the masses of people into doing your will if you can gin up enough strife or enough anger
11:35about whatever the issue is for today then if you live in a democracy then you get everybody to vote
11:43your way because you've manipulated their emotions into doing it and now you've got poor people oppressing
11:48poor people and they're essentially oppressing themselves because they've been manipulated into it
11:54and everybody suffers for it verse four those who forsake the law praise the wicked but those who
12:04keep the law strive against them no matter what a person does they are not keeping the law if they
12:10aren't keeping it in their heart and nobody who encourages wickedness has the law written on their
12:15hearts and this goes right back to verse i think it was 26 that i that i quoted earlier if whatever is in
12:24your mind in your heart is contrary to god's commandments then it's not justice it is not
12:31righteousness it's not good it's only evil and you know our ultimate goal of course is to transform
12:38our minds and our hearts into into god's to remake our own hearts in alignment with his and we don't do
12:47that on our own i mean we can't force our hearts to change and be like god's god does that through the
12:53holy spirit and through his commandments by keeping the commandments by practice practicing them day after
13:00day in real life putting them into work and by trusting in god that's the most important part
13:06we over time transform our minds into conformity with his if you're just doing the commandments and
13:15you're not doing it out of trust and love for god it's going to do you some good because you know god has
13:20created the universe to work in a certain way and his commandments are in alignment with the way the
13:25universe works but it's not going to transform your heart the way it could if you were doing it out of
13:32love for him see essentially kind of the same thing going on here in verse five evil men do not
13:39understand justice but those who seek the lord understand it completely if you want to understand
13:44justice study god's commandments and if your idea of justice is not in alignment with god's commandments
13:51it's not justice god created the universe god sets the rules he defines right and wrong people who
13:59preach justice all day long but live or speak contrary to god's commandments they don't even know what
14:05justice is it's not defined by anyone's feelings about fairness or equity those all are meaningless
14:12outside of the context of what god wants for us how he wants us to live and who we are in his kingdom
14:20in his plan verse six better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways
14:28you know there's nothing particularly superior morally about being rich or being poor
14:34uh there's nothing evil about being rich there's nothing i mean there's nothing wicked about being rich there's
14:40nothing wicked about being poor those can be symptoms of other things but
14:46being wealthy does can create barriers to trusting in god you know material success often encourages
14:55people to trust in themselves to believe that they're making the right choices that they're doing
14:59things and their actions have created the good returns for themselves to an extent that's true
15:07because obeying god's commandments will make your life better it won't necessarily make you rich but it will
15:14make your life better making wise choices with your finances will make you wealthier than you would be
15:20otherwise but if you're not giving god credit for these things if you're not really trusting in god for
15:26what's really important for your eternal salvation in the state of your heart what good is all that
15:32that wealth you know gold and silver have no mass they are weightless in the scales of eternity
15:39but good character carries lots of weight gold and silver are not going to cross into the grave i mean you can't
15:47carry them through the grave into eternity but you will carry your good character and your good deeds those
15:53survive with you verse 7 the one who keeps the law is a son with understanding but a companion of gluttons
16:00shames his father the curious thing here is that there is no specific commandment anywhere in god's law
16:06about gluttony there are commandments against cheating your neighbor against
16:14charging interest in loans with your with your neighbor there are all kinds of commandments about that
16:22and those are related and that those are about greed and wanting more for yourself
16:26but there's no specific commandment against gluttony or drunkenness these things are symptoms of a bad
16:34character not the sins in themselves so you're keeping god's commandments it requires self-discipline
16:42and obviously that's going to make a father proud when his son or his daughter has self-discipline
16:49doesn't doesn't make bad choices in life it makes positive choices that will be good for
16:55his future that will be good for his family every parent will be proud of that but a glutton or a
17:02drunkard lacks obvious self-discipline and therefore is also very unlikely to be keeping god's commandments
17:10and likely to behave in other shameful ways being a glutton or a drunkard shows a lack of self-discipline
17:18that carries over into sin and that is going to bring shame on your parents on your community
17:26everybody who depends on you and not just shame is going to hurt them materially too
17:30see verse 8 whoever multiplies his wealth by interest and profit gathers gathers it for him who is generous
17:39to the poor now first off you're not allowed to charge interest to a fellow israelite you can
17:48you loan him money but you're not supposed to loan him money for profit you can well and then you're not
17:55allowed to collect past seven years our entire money monetary system is just it's broken from top to
18:03bottom it is certainly not in alignment with god's law but again here it's not the wealth that's the
18:09problem it's it's the motives behind the wealth and how you use it the one who gives to the poor
18:17has to have something to give so there has to be some wealth there the problem is in how and why the
18:22wealth is acquired and i think profit in this translation in the esv i think some of the other
18:28translations say that too i think that's really a poor translation the hebrew word here is tarbit
18:33and it's really about predatory profit it has to do with multiplying so if you work on at something
18:42and you you spend your your time and your resources creating a product and then you sell it to somebody
18:48you have a right to make a profit on that you not only need to be compensated for your time and
18:55there's resources but you also need to make enough profit so that you can buy more so that you can
19:01expand your business nothing wrong with that the problem is in price gouging uh conspiracy to fix
19:09prices charging extra for somebody who's in need and actually you are perfectly justified in charging
19:17the wealthy more than in charging the poor i know that that goes against the capitalist grain but
19:23that is also praised by by solomon in the proverbs if you are actually charging somebody who is in
19:31greater need more because they need it more they need that product to survive or to um because they're
19:38going to lose something else if they don't get whatever it is if you charge them more because of
19:42that need that's a predatory profit that's what this is talking about so don't be that person
19:49verse 9 if one turns away his ear from hearing the law even his prayer is an abomination there is a
19:57whole lot here about keeping god's commandments and how you will be better off if you keep them and
20:04refusing to keep them will cause you problems if you have faith in god if you trust him you will do
20:12what he says now you might disagree with me about exactly what what god is telling you to do that's
20:19legitimate i understand that but once you know what god wants you to do and you refuse to do it that's
20:25because you don't trust him because he says that these things are for your good so if you don't do
20:30them that means you don't believe him that they are for your good so if you don't have faith in god
20:36if you're not listening to him why should he listen to you this is only common sense nobody should be
20:43upset when god says that if you refuse to hear his law he's going to refuse to hear your prayer
20:48all right in verse 10 whoever misleads the upright into an evil way will fall into his own pit
20:56but the blameless will have a goodly inheritance even good people who want to obey god
21:03can be led astray by subtle lies and manipulation but god knows the real score we are all
21:11susceptible to um to the manipulation that we see on the news media from you know friends whether
21:19well-meaning or or not we're all susceptible to that but in god's view i mean everybody who does wrong
21:29everybody who violates god's commandments will be held responsible for their own sins
21:33but the person who leads other people astray he'll be held responsible for his own and for those
21:40other people's sins god is not uh not sure what the right term is here he's not an unbending legalist
21:49in the sense that he doesn't understand that that people have weaknesses that he doesn't understand that
21:57we have that our minds are imperfect that we don't have perfect knowledge of the universe or even
22:02perfect knowledge of his commandments people study god's law in their entire lives and still disagree
22:08on a lot of what it says god understands that he knows your heart and while god knows my heart isn't
22:16an excuse for ignoring god's commandments it is an excuse when you're trying your best and you maybe
22:24don't understand the commandments the real problem that this verse is talking about is somebody who knows
22:30what the right way is and then leads other people astray convinces them that this isn't so bad or god
22:37didn't really mean that this is the serpent in the garden this is the the seeker friendly pastor
22:44who is telling everybody it's okay to be transgender that's just who you are god created you
22:50in the wrong body no that's insane god did not create you in the wrong body
22:55that that pastor will be held responsible for your sins and you will be too but that pastor will have a
23:02greater punishment than you he has a greater responsibility and how now he is responsible
23:07for a cascade of sins not only his own but everybody around him
23:13uh verse 11 a rich man is wise in his own eyes but a poor man who has understanding will find him
23:19out i touched on this a little bit earlier how if you keep getting rewarded for something you're doing
23:25you'll begin to think that you're doing it right no matter what you're doing if you're cheating
23:30in business you know using unjust weights and you keep winning and keep profiting you start to think
23:37well the ends justifies the means i keep winning so i must be doing it right
23:40but no that will catch up with you eventually a poor man who has understanding will find him out
23:46means that this poor man might not be financially as astute or successful but he can see your
23:56dishonesty it doesn't take monetary wealth to see righteousness and wickedness and tell the
24:02difference your bank account is not a moral score sheet verse 12 when the righteous triumph there is
24:09great glory but when the wicked rise people hide themselves when the righteous are in charge
24:15nobody needs to fear that they will be unjustly prosecuted or persecuted legally robbed
24:21and surrounded by criminals and and rioters when the wicked are in charge nobody is safe in any
24:28context any safety that you think you have is an illusion and the wicked will frequently use safety as
24:36a reason they will play on your fears and say you have to go you have to do what i say in order to be safe
24:42ignore those people never trust them they are manipulating you and they are leading you astray
24:48trust in god keep god's commandments let him worry about that you take reasonable precautions for your
24:55own family you are responsible for your safety and the safety of your family and you're responsible
25:02for obeying god's commandments god is responsible for the consequences of your obedience you are not
25:08you know justice is perverted at all levels of society and when the wicked are in charge i mean and
25:15the normal principles of justice and reward are turned on their heads
25:19so prudent people hide themselves in those circumstances they keep their heads down because
25:26you can no longer depend on the normal normal due process of law and justice
25:32you know all of these principles that proverbs talks about
25:35about how you know if you are righteous
25:38there will be rewards if you're wicked you'll be punished that's only true when the righteous are in charge
25:43when the wicked are in charge everything is turned on its head
25:47on to verse 13
25:49whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper but he who confesses and forsakes them
25:54will obtain mercy
25:56concealing transgressions will not prosper
25:59this is kind of exactly what i was just talking about
26:01under normal circumstances when the righteous are in charge
26:05you will not prosper if you are
26:08sinning and gaining
26:10gaining your wealth through unjust means
26:13eventually it's going to catch up with you and it will regardless of who's in charge
26:17eventually it will catch up with you because god knows the score
26:20you know everyone who thinks that they've gotten away with something
26:23whatever it is they're doing
26:24god sees it
26:26but on the other hand no matter what you've done
26:29if you confess it and repent
26:31sorry if you confess it and repent god will forgive you
26:34and you think of uh
26:36first john 1 9 let me let me pull it up here
26:39i just have a note to go look at it
26:42first john 1 9
26:45bring it over here
26:47if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
26:52and purify us from all unrighteousness
26:54i think that says it all
26:56verse 14
26:58blessed is the one who fears the lord always
27:01but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity
27:04and this implies that to fear yahweh
27:06is to repent
27:08and allow him to transform your heart
27:10but if you refuse to repent
27:12you are choosing to harden your own heart
27:14you're taking pharaoh's route
27:16and putting yourself against god
27:18and then every time you give in to temptation
27:21whether it's the temptation to be proud
27:23and resist god
27:24or the temptation to give in to
27:27whatever urge or sin
27:29is your thing
27:31it becomes a little bit harder to resist the next time
27:35it becomes a little bit easier to give in
27:38until eventually your conscience is so warped and seared
27:42that you don't even know when you're sinning anymore
27:45until fortunately we have the written law
27:48to help correct those sorts of things
27:50and to bring us back into a place
27:52where we can hear god's spirit
27:53speaking to us and leading us to do the right things
27:56that's why it's so important to continually study god's commandments
28:00and you know why
28:02you know messianic and jewish congregations
28:05most of them
28:06go through the torah
28:08the first five books of the bible
28:09every year or every three years
28:11depending on what reading cycle they're doing
28:13but they do it continually all the time
28:15it's a really good thing to do
28:18verse 15
28:19like a roaring lion or a charging bear
28:21is a wicked ruler over a poor people
28:24and the wealthy often have recourse
28:27to mitigate the effects of despotism
28:29you know when the wicked are in charge
28:31wealthy people have ways of getting things done
28:35bribery or control of resources
28:38to create a system of favors
28:41that can be both good and bad
28:44the wealthy might get poorer
28:46under a wicked ruler
28:47but they're very rarely completely overwhelmed
28:51as long as they continue to control their resources
28:53or the majority of them
28:54the poor on the other hand
28:56don't really have any options
28:57without a just government to protect them
29:00that rules according to god's law
29:02the poor are at the mercy of every brigand
29:05tyrant and cheat out there
29:07and that is one of the
29:10one of the purposes of government
29:11is to protect the poor
29:13from fraud and abuse
29:15by people who would take advantage of
29:17verse 16
29:19a ruler who lacks understanding
29:20is a cruel oppressor
29:22but he who hates unjust gain
29:24will prolong his days
29:25any government official
29:27who abuses his position
29:29doesn't really understand
29:31who put him there
29:31god
29:33all authority comes from god
29:35and you know
29:36some people steal authority
29:38some people come by it honestly
29:40but ultimately
29:42all authority in the universe
29:43is
29:44established by god
29:46and so every person
29:48with any kind of power
29:49or authority over other people
29:51is holding it in trust
29:53for god
29:53whether they are wicked
29:54or righteous
29:55and abusing that trust
29:57will bring god's wrath
29:59eventually
29:59very few wicked rulers
30:02live to an old age
30:04i mean there are some
30:05notable exceptions
30:06obviously in our current
30:07our current state
30:10i don't know what you want
30:11to call it that
30:12it's not
30:12not people in our official
30:14government
30:15but you know
30:15the people who are actually
30:16running the show
30:17many of them are
30:18are very old
30:19and
30:19they've lived a long life
30:21not necessarily a peaceful
30:22or pleasant life
30:23they may be miserable
30:25but
30:26they're still kicking it
30:2890 or older years
30:30but
30:31the proverbs are about
30:33principles
30:33don't forget that
30:34these are not necessarily
30:35promises
30:35these are just
30:36this is how the world
30:37tends to work
30:38let's see
30:40verse 17
30:42if one is burdened
30:43with the blood of another
30:44he will be a fugitive
30:45until death
30:46let no one help him
30:47i'm sounding kind of harsh
30:50i think in in
30:51in this discussion
30:53but
30:55this is talking about
30:57the abuse of god's
30:58resources
30:58this entire chapter
30:59is
30:59hidden
31:01it's saying that god
31:03is going to
31:03to deal harshly with you
31:05if you do not
31:06use what he has given
31:07you wisely
31:07or even honestly
31:09in this case
31:11he's talking about
31:12your brother
31:13you know
31:14when cain killed abel
31:15and god
31:16confronted him
31:17and said
31:17where's abel
31:18and cain said
31:19am i my brother's keeper
31:21the answer is yes
31:23you are not
31:25your brother's keeper
31:26in the sense
31:26that you're responsible
31:27for everything he does
31:28you're not allowed
31:29to run your brother's life
31:30you can't go snooping
31:31in his business
31:32but
31:33you are responsible
31:35for how you treat
31:36your brother
31:36you are his keeper
31:37in that sense
31:38and if you abuse him
31:40especially to the point
31:42of
31:42taking a life
31:44god has commanded us
31:46to take your life
31:47we don't have an option
31:48on that
31:49that is what god
31:49has commanded
31:50mankind
31:51has a responsibility
31:53to god
31:54to avenge murder
31:55it's not about
31:56getting even
31:57it's about ensuring
31:58justice
31:58and protecting
31:59our other neighbors
31:59we're not authorized
32:01to show mercy
32:02to unrepentant
32:03murderers
32:04god may forgive
32:05them if they repent
32:06and there may be
32:07some mitigating
32:08circumstances
32:09but when it comes
32:10to premeditated murder
32:11the only thing god said
32:13we're allowed to do
32:14is to execute that person
32:15and you know
32:17that requires the
32:18cooperation of the courts
32:19i'm not saying
32:20we should be vigilante
32:20or vigilantes
32:22and go out there
32:23and kill everybody
32:24who's been convicted
32:25of premeditated murder
32:27and not executed
32:28it's not our job
32:29that's
32:29we are
32:30we also required
32:31to cooperate
32:32with civil courts
32:33that's also in god's
32:34commandments
32:34let's see
32:36verse 18
32:37whoever walks
32:38in integrity
32:38will be delivered
32:39but he who is crooked
32:40in his ways
32:41will suddenly fall
32:42if you are steady
32:44if you are steadily
32:46and reliably just
32:47you're going to make
32:49some enemies
32:50but
32:51you're going to have
32:52more friends
32:53you're going to have
32:54many fewer enemies
32:55than you would otherwise
32:56as someone who treats
32:57other people poorly
32:58is going to make
32:59a lot more enemies
33:00and
33:01is more likely
33:03to be constantly
33:04other people rather
33:05are going to be
33:06looking for opportunities
33:07to take revenge
33:08if you haven't
33:10abused anybody
33:10fewer people
33:12are going to have
33:12a reason
33:13to want to abuse you
33:14that's just
33:15common sense
33:16in
33:17you know
33:18the law of reciprocity
33:19if you've heard of that
33:20other people might call it
33:22karma or something
33:22but really it's just
33:23the way that god
33:24has set up the universe
33:25if you're good to people
33:26will tend to be good to you
33:27if you're bad to people
33:29will be bad to you
33:30even
33:31people that you weren't
33:32necessarily bad
33:33directly to
33:34because you have created
33:35a
33:36a world
33:37and a culture
33:38in which people
33:39are bad to each other
33:40so verse 18
33:42sorry
33:43verse 19
33:44whoever works his land
33:46will have plenty of bread
33:47but he who follows
33:48worthless pursuits
33:49will have plenty of poverty
33:50now if you're a farmer
33:52this is
33:52the application here
33:53is obvious
33:54but it's not just
33:55talking about farming
33:56it's about being diligent
33:57in whatever god
33:58has given you
33:59whatever resources
34:00god has given you
34:01you have a responsibility
34:02to use them
34:03and not just to
34:05use them to survive
34:07but to prosper
34:07you have a responsibility
34:09to make those resources
34:11grow
34:11which means you have to
34:13you have to get a profit
34:14out of them
34:15there's nothing wrong
34:16with that
34:17as long as you're not
34:18cheating anybody
34:19or abusing anybody
34:20you focus your energy
34:22on those labors
34:23that are going to bring you
34:24the most return
34:25focus on those things
34:26first
34:26and then you focus
34:29on those things
34:29that will bring
34:30let me rephrase that
34:32focus your energy
34:34on those things
34:34that are going to give you
34:35the most important returns
34:37first
34:37and then focus
34:38on those things
34:39that give you
34:39the greatest return
34:40for example
34:42raising your children
34:43to be obedient
34:45and respectful people
34:47who honor god
34:49and honor their parents
34:50that's way more important
34:52than having lots of money
34:54focus on raising
34:56your children right
34:57that's more important
34:58when you've got that
34:59taken care of
35:00well then you can
35:01shift your focus
35:02over to material gain
35:04if you've got the opportunity
35:05or helping your neighbors
35:07that's another good thing
35:09you know
35:10create priorities
35:11in your life
35:11biblical priorities
35:13that are in alignment
35:13with god's commandments
35:14and in the way
35:15that god has
35:16shown us
35:18how to live
35:19through yeshua
35:19verse 20
35:21a faithful man
35:23will abound with blessings
35:24but whoever hastens
35:25to be rich
35:26will not go unpunished
35:27hastening to be rich
35:29that's
35:31the opposite
35:32of the previous verse
35:33this is somebody
35:33who does not have
35:34his priorities straight
35:35it's not about
35:37he may be
35:38he may be diligent
35:41in working
35:41in making sure
35:43that his fields
35:44are producing
35:45but he's doing it
35:46for the wrong reason
35:47he's trying to make himself
35:48rich
35:48rather than
35:49focusing on those things
35:50that are most important
35:51first
35:52he is going to suffer
35:53for it
35:54whether he's going
35:55to be punished
35:56after the resurrection
35:58or he's going
36:01to be punished
36:01in this life
36:02by having
36:02bad relationships
36:04or enemies
36:06or
36:07his wealth
36:09is unstable
36:09whatever it is
36:10there will be
36:11negative consequences
36:12verse 21
36:14to show partiality
36:16is not good
36:17but for a piece
36:17of bread
36:18a man will do wrong
36:19it's easy
36:21to bribe
36:21a desperate man
36:22you think about
36:24Balaam
36:25showing Balak
36:25how to create
36:27leverage
36:27against Israel
36:28Israel
36:29as long as
36:30they were obeying God
36:31Balak
36:32couldn't touch them
36:33but as soon
36:35as there was
36:35some idolatry
36:38that put a
36:39fulcrum under there
36:40that Balak
36:41could use
36:41to
36:42to lever them
36:43away from God
36:44and defeat them
36:45in battle
36:45also
36:46he created
36:47a situation
36:49that he could
36:50take advantage of
36:51the same thing
36:52can happen with
36:53judges
36:54and other kinds
36:55of decision makers
36:56if you know
36:58what their weak
36:58points are
36:59you can take
37:00advantage of those
37:01by appealing
37:02to
37:03points of desperation
37:05things that they
37:06really want in their
37:06life but don't have
37:07that's where they
37:08can be bribed
37:09or
37:10that's where they
37:11can be
37:11blackmailed
37:12on the positive
37:14side
37:14you can create
37:15goodwill
37:16and even favor
37:17by providing
37:18what a person
37:18needs
37:19it doesn't have
37:20to be
37:20nefarious
37:21to take
37:22advantage of
37:23what a person
37:23what another
37:24person wants
37:25as long as
37:25you're not
37:25abusive
37:26as long as
37:28you don't
37:28hold them
37:28over the fire
37:29and get them
37:29to do things
37:30that are unjust
37:31that are against
37:31God's commandments
37:32it's a good
37:34thing to create
37:35favor with other
37:35people by doing
37:36good for them
37:37that shouldn't
37:39be necessarily
37:40your motive
37:40for doing good
37:41to other people
37:41but
37:42you know
37:44a little
37:44strategic
37:45good deed
37:47now and then
37:48certainly can't
37:49hurt
37:50when
37:50there are
37:52business
37:52decisions
37:53or legal
37:53decisions
37:54that have
37:54to be made
37:55and
37:55all else
37:57seems to be
37:57equal
37:58verse 22
38:00a stingy
38:02man hastens
38:02after wealth
38:03and does not
38:03know that
38:04poverty will
38:05come upon
38:05him
38:05see verse 20
38:07that we just
38:08talked about
38:08a stingy
38:10person is
38:10someone who
38:11doesn't want
38:12to give away
38:12things
38:13who wants
38:13everything for
38:13himself
38:14doesn't want
38:14to spend
38:15it
38:15doesn't want
38:15to be
38:16generous
38:16and I
38:17think this
38:18follows the
38:18previous
38:19verse
38:19about
38:20partiality
38:21in bribery
38:22because
38:22a stingy
38:23man is
38:24easier to
38:24bribe and
38:25pervert
38:25because his
38:26priorities are
38:26messed up
38:27he's easier
38:29to manipulate
38:29your generosity
38:31breeds wealth
38:31stinginess on the
38:33other hand
38:34comes from a
38:34fear of lack
38:35since fear
38:37is essentially
38:37faith of
38:38something bad
38:39happening
38:39it can become
38:40a self-fulfilling
38:41prophecy
38:41the thing that
38:43he fears most
38:44is going to
38:45come upon him
38:45I'm not sure
38:47where that
38:47saying comes
38:48from
38:48see verse
38:5023
38:50whoever rebukes
38:52a man will
38:53afterwards find
38:54more favor than
38:55he who flatters
38:55with his tongue
38:56this isn't talking
38:58about being overly
38:59harsh with people
38:59it's not talking
39:00about being
39:01over critical
39:02constantly
39:03pointing out
39:04everybody's flaws
39:05nobody likes
39:06that person
39:06you're not going
39:07to make any
39:08friends
39:08you're not going
39:10to find any
39:10favor that way
39:11what this is
39:12talking about
39:13is just telling
39:13the truth
39:14if somebody
39:16is doing
39:16something
39:16that's going
39:17to hurt
39:17them
39:17if you love
39:19that person
39:20maybe you
39:20should tell
39:20them
39:21and of course
39:22tell them
39:22in a way
39:23that will be
39:23easier for
39:24them to hear
39:24you don't
39:25have to be
39:25mean about
39:26it
39:26unsolicited
39:27advice is
39:28rarely
39:28welcome
39:30so if
39:32you've got
39:32something you
39:33need to tell
39:33somebody
39:33if they're
39:35causing
39:35doing something
39:36that's going
39:36to cause
39:37them problems
39:37down the
39:38road
39:38maybe say
39:39hey you know
39:41I noticed
39:41something
39:42can I offer
39:43you some
39:43advice about
39:44this topic
39:44and then if
39:46they say
39:46yes then
39:46you tell
39:47them
39:47you're going
39:48to have to
39:48use your
39:48judgment on
39:49that of
39:49course
39:50every person
39:51will hear
39:51something
39:52differently
39:52every person
39:54is in a
39:54different place
39:55you have to
39:56know the
39:56person you're
39:57talking to
39:57if you don't
39:58know the
39:58person
39:58your rebuke
40:00probably won't
40:00be well heard
40:01anyways
40:01this is about
40:03people you
40:03know
40:04and
40:05in the same
40:07way flattery
40:08is
40:09it may
40:10make people
40:11feel good
40:11now but
40:12it's going
40:12to harm
40:13your relationship
40:13in the long
40:14run just
40:15be honest
40:15with people
40:16tell them
40:16the truth
40:16give compliments
40:18where compliments
40:19are due
40:19give correction
40:20where correction
40:21is due
40:21but don't
40:23stick your nose
40:23in where it
40:24doesn't belong
40:24verse 24
40:28whoever robs
40:29his father
40:30or his mother
40:30and says that
40:31is no transgression
40:32is a companion
40:33to a man
40:34who destroys
40:34and this
40:36reminds me
40:36of
40:37oh
40:38Matthew 15
40:39Jesus replied
40:40why do you
40:41break the
40:41commandment
40:42of God
40:42for you
40:42the sake
40:43of your
40:43tradition
40:43for God
40:44said
40:45honor your
40:45father and
40:46mother
40:46and anyone
40:46who curses
40:47their father
40:48or mother
40:48is to be
40:48put to
40:49death
40:49but if
40:50you say
40:50that if
40:51anyone
40:51declares
40:51that what
40:52might have
40:53been used
40:53to help
40:53their father
40:54or mother
40:54is devoted
40:55to God
40:55they are
40:56not to
40:56honor their
40:57father
40:57or mother
40:57with it
40:58thus you
40:58nullify
40:59the word
40:59of God
41:00for the
41:00sake
41:00of your
41:00tradition
41:01you
41:02hypocrites
