00:09On this day, the names Jean, Jeanne, Johanne, Yann, Johanne and their variants are also celebrated.
00:19This festival, situated at the heart of the Christmas season, honors one of Christ's closest witnesses.
00:25the one whom the gospel calls the disciple whom Jesus loved.
00:30Biography
00:31Saint John is one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus.
00:37Son of Zebedee and brother of James the Greater, he was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee when he was called.
00:44According to tradition, John, at a very young age, was distinguished by his exceptional closeness to Christ.
00:51He is present during the most intimate and decisive moments of Jesus' life,
00:56the transfiguration,
00:58the agony in the garden of olive trees
01:00and especially the scene where he rests his head on the Lord's chest.
01:07At the foot of the cross,
01:08John is the only apostle who did not flee.
01:11Jesus then entrusted his mother to him, Mary, here is your mother.
01:18With these words, John becomes the guardian of the Virgin and, symbolically, the spiritual son of Mary for the whole Church.
01:26This episode is at the heart of the tradition that sees John as the apostle of faithful love.
01:33remaining until the very end when all seems lost.
01:38After the resurrection and Pentecost, John fervently proclaims the Gospel.
01:43Tradition holds that he lived a long life, unlike the other apostles.
01:48and that he exercised his ministry mainly in Asia Minor, particularly in Ephesus.
01:53There he wrote the Gospel that bears his name, as well as three epistles,
01:59marked by a profound and luminous theology.
02:04God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God.
02:10John is also the author of the Book of Revelation, written during his exile on the island of Patmos.
02:17This book, often feared, is above all a message of hope.
02:22Despite the trials, Christ is victorious.
02:27and human history is oriented towards the light.
02:31Saint John thus appears as the theologian of contemplation,
02:35he who penetrates the mystery of the Word made flesh
02:38and conveys it with a unique depth.
02:42According to tradition, John died peacefully at a very old age.
02:48making him the only apostle who was not a martyr in the strict sense.
02:54Its symbol is the eagle soaring high in the sky,
02:58an image of his spiritual thought capable of probing divine mysteries.
