00:00Saint John the Baptist is an absolutely unique figure in all of biblical history.
00:05He is both the last of the Old Testament prophets and the first witness of Christ.
00:11He was born in a time of prophetic silence that had lasted for centuries.
00:16His parents, Zachariah and Elizabeth, are old and childless.
00:21One day, the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah in the temple to announce a miraculous birth.
00:28The child, said the angel, will walk before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah.
00:36His name will be John.
00:38Zacharias, who doubts, becomes mute until the birth of the child.
00:44John was born in a mountainous region of Judea.
00:47From his childhood, he was devoted to God.
00:51And very young, he withdrew into the desert, a place of stripping, prayer, and preparation.
00:58He leads an austere life there.
01:00He wears a tunic made of camel hair.
01:03Feeds on wild honey and grasshoppers.
01:06Life without comfort, without distraction, without compromise.
01:10And then one day he begins to preach.
01:14His voice echoes in the silence of the desert.
01:17But it attracts huge crowds.
01:19He calls the people to conversion.
01:21Prepare the way of the Lord.
01:23Make straight his paths.
01:25He baptizes in the Jordan River.
01:28Those who want to change their lives.
01:30This is not yet Christian baptism, but a sign of penance.
01:35A strong symbol of inner purification.
01:39Fishermen, soldiers, tax collectors come to him to be raised up, awakened.
01:46Jean never flatters.
01:48He speaks forcefully, frankly, even to the powerful.
01:52One day, Jesus himself comes to the Jordan.
01:56Jean hesitates.
01:58It is I who need to be baptized by you.
02:01But Jesus insists.
02:03John plunges him into the water.
02:05And at that moment, the spirit descended on Jesus like a dove.
02:09And a voice is heard.
02:12You are my beloved son.
02:14In you, I put all my love.
02:16From this moment, Jean understands that his mission is coming to an end.
02:22He said to his disciples, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
02:26He fades away.
02:27He gives way to the one he announced.
02:30He will say this magnificent sentence.
02:32He must grow and I must shrink.
02:37But John continues to be a prophet until the end.
02:40He is not afraid to speak the truth, even in front of the king.
02:44He publicly denounces the scandalous situation of King Herod Antipas,
02:49who lives with his brother's wife, Herodias.
02:53For this, he was arrested and thrown in prison.
02:57There, in his cell, Jean doubts.
03:00He sends disciples to Jesus to ask him,
03:03“Are you the one who is to come?”
03:05Where should we expect another one?
03:08Jesus does not condemn him for this hesitation.
03:11He responds tenderly, describing the signs of the kingdom.
03:15The blind see, the deaf hear, the dead are raised.
03:20And he adds, “Blessed is he who does not fall away from me.”
03:26Finally, Herodias asks Herod for John's head on a platter,
03:30at a proud banquet.
03:32The king, trapped by his oath and his pride, accepts.
03:38John is beheaded.
03:40His martyrdom is discreet, but his influence is immense.
03:45Even after his death, John's shadow looms large in the Gospels.
03:49Jesus pays homage to him.
03:52Among those born of women, there is no one greater than John.
03:55John the Baptist is the model of the precursor,
03:59the one who prepares hearts, who designates the light
04:02and which fades away to leave all the space to God.
