The Rural Development and Government Minister says no evacuations have been ordered from Piparo at this time but that there is a plan in place if this becomes necessary.

Minister Khadijah Ameen gave an update on the extent of the State's response to the increased activity from the Piparo Mud Volcano, including the traffic restrictions in place for the safety of residents and motorists.

00:00On Christmas Eve in Peparo, the usual expectations of the joyful celebrations on Christmas Day turned into fear as mud bubbled and spewed from the Peparo mud volcano.
00:12Rural Developmental Local Government Minister Khadija Amin outlined the extent of the state's response.
00:18I can confirm to you that we have heightened level of activity at the Peparo mud volcano. We have been monitoring and assessing the situation since earlier today.
00:31The Kovar Tabakit Talparo Corporation as well as the Princess Tongue Corporation. Their disaster units have been on the ground alongside the TTPS and the Municipal Police as well as the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
00:49We also had the fire services there as well as TNTech because some of their infrastructure will also be affected.
00:55Minister Amin said at the time she sent the media update, no evacuations had been ordered.
01:01From my discussions with our representatives on the ground, the residents do have relatives they prefer to go by if they need to evacuate.
01:12But if need be, we do have the Peparo Community Centre that will be activated as a shelter in case residents need it.
01:20Minister Amin said the MP for Princess Tongue, Dr. Ina Ali and the Chairman of Princess Tongue Corporation, Mr. Gauri Rupenrein, are on the site as we speak.
01:31Minister Amin said the increased activity was from the mud volcano's main vent and some traffic restrictions were being put in place.
01:38As a precautionary measure, we are putting some traffic restrictions in place.
01:46So traffic will be restricted from Peparo Road and diverted through Husseini Trace.
01:54You also have Thomas Ross Road from the Princess Tongue side as well as through Peparo Road from Tabakit.
02:03So municipal police officers are on the ground together with TTPS to ensure that motorists stay away from the roads that are being affected with the cracks and so on.
02:15The Ministry of Rural Development and local government said a backhoe deployed by the Kuba Tabakit Tal Power Corporation
02:21has been dispatched to the site to re-establish temporary emergency access for residents of Pancho Trace and Robinson Road
02:30while assessments and mitigation works continue.
