The United Nations Development Programme has taken a major step toward strengthening climate resilience in Trinidad and Tobago.

On Wednesday, the UNDP officially launched the Community Flood Early Warning System, designed to better protect communities from severe flooding.

The launch took place at the Santa Rosa Government Primary School, attended by Local Government Minister Khadija Ameen, Homeland Security Minister of Roger Alexander, Opposition Leader Pennople Beckles; and UNDP Resident Representative, Ugo Blanco.

00:35The system brings enhanced flood mapping, real-time data and improved early warning capabilities, allowing citizens to be better protected and better prepared.
00:46Programme Officer for the Energy, Environment and Disaster Management Rosemary Lyle says the project was completed in two phases at a cost of U.S. $1.5 million.
00:58The first part involved installing stream flow gauges across seven communities in Trinidad and Tobago.
01:07And the second part, which is the part that we are currently completing and launching, involved extending this to 12 additional sites through 10 communities in Trinidad and Tobago.
01:17The installation of rainfall stations. These are meant to collect data on the level of the rivers that run through these communities and transmit this data to a portal with the Water Resources Agency of Trinidad and Tobago.
01:30DP expressed deep appreciation to the European Union Commission for Humanitarian Aid Operations, as well as the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management, the Water Resources Agency and the Tobago Emergency Management Agency.
