00:00Birmingham on a good day and there's no better day than when Giants Live is in town with the
00:26strongman open featuring the world deadlift championship and when one very special athlete
00:31is making his return.
00:37I miss the sport.
00:41If I would not come back, I might regret for the rest of my life.
00:53I don't want to live with regrets, you know.
00:56I want to live my life to the fullest.
01:11I love being the best, you know, that's inspiring me to keep going and I want to prove to the
01:17people, to the world that, you know, I can come back after such a long time and still
01:22be one of the best guys out there.
01:24You know, I have won everything there is to win in strongman and, you know, I realized
01:32the world records are something that's going to live there forever until they're broken and
01:39people are going to remember those world records, these big moments.
01:43I am very confident in my ability to break my own deadlift world record and pull 510 kilograms
01:51and that's what I'm going to do.
01:53But the goal is not done there.
02:01I'm here also to win the whole show.
02:02So I have five more events left after the deadlift and I'll be fully satisfied if I win the
02:09whole show and I truly believe I can.
02:10What a time to be a strongman fan.
02:24Hapthor Julius Bjornsson looking preposterously enormous.
02:30That isn't the world record.
02:32The question is, in a few moments time, will he manage to pull 510 kilograms?
02:37The lads here, they're getting ready to go outside there.
02:39So much to talk about.
02:40Matt Raggin in the back, can he break a national record?
02:43Gavin Bilton as well.
02:44And what about the man holding a t-shirt from Mexico, Raul?
02:48So much that we don't know about him, but we do know one thing.
02:52He's going to give this absolutely everything.
02:54And, fingers crossed, history, once again, will be made at Giants Live.
02:59It's time to meet the athletes.
03:01Hey!
03:02Hey!
03:03Well, thanks, Ratty.
03:08And, yes, let's begin.
03:10Let's meet our athletes.
03:12We saw him a few moments ago here for the deadlift only from Mexico.
03:18Oh, 480 kilos recently for a new American record.
03:21It's Flores.
03:22Representing America, 6'6", in his socks, or out of them.
03:28Former NFL player with the Dallas Cowboys, Bryce Johnson.
03:33From Canada, Tristan Horrath.
03:35He's a police officer from Edmonton.
03:38Came fifth at World's Strongest last year.
03:40Here's a friendly fella from Australia.
03:43Two-time Australia's Strongest Man, the singing strongman, Eddie Williams.
03:48This guy made the World's Strongest Man Grand Final last year.
03:54It is the Kiwi, Matt Rack.
03:57Then, always the athlete from Mexico.
03:58They call him Smash.
03:59It's Austin Andrade.
04:00A real veteran now.
04:0343 years old, competing in deadlift only tonight.
04:07It is Rauno Heinle.
04:13Six-time New Zealand's Strongest Man.
04:16Placed fourth at the World's Strongest Man Grand Final last year.
04:19It is the Kiwi, Matt Rack.
04:23Then, always a fan favorite.
04:25Two-time Britain's Strongest Man runner-up, Gavin Bilton.
04:30Another stalwart of the British scene.
04:37A member of the prestigious £1,000 Club.
04:40It's Adam Bishop.
04:41That's what he can lift, not what he weighs.
04:48Yet another familiar face.
04:50Two-time Europe's Strongest Man.
04:52Reigning Britain's Strongest Man.
04:54His shoulders arguably the strongest on the planet.
04:57It's Luke Stoltman.
05:03Now, this man's star is rising and rising fast.
05:072025's England's Strongest Man, Paddy Haynes.
05:14From the USA, the always intense, always elegant T-Rex.
05:19On the Strongman Classic in London, it's Evan Singleton.
05:27And look who's back.
05:32Returning to Giants Live for the first time since 2019.
05:36All six-foot-nine of Hafthor, Julius Bjornsson.
05:42Five-time Europe's Strongest Man.
05:442018 World's Strongest Man.
05:47What could he do tonight?
05:51So, there you go.
05:52I hope that's all right for you.
05:53As we move into the deadlift, Colin Bryce.
05:59Yes, indeed.
06:00This is max deadlift.
06:01We start at 400 kilos.
06:03Who knows where we finish?
06:04The world record, 505 kilos, held by Hafthor Julius Bjornsson.
06:09This is what's happened so far, round two.
06:11The men at 420 kilos.
06:13All of them going clear, except Luke Stoltman down the bottom there.
06:17Bjornsson and Singleton still to come.
06:19He's set correctly for the Ricks.
06:23Well, it's going to be Hafthor.
06:25Julius Bjornsson.
06:28The mountain.
06:29Up against America's Evan Singleton.
06:34Well, I thought perhaps one of them would pass this, because you're allowed to pass.
06:37But, uh, both of them getting the lift in.
06:41420 kilos.
06:42I mean, Bjornsson, it's not that long ago, less than a month, since he's broken the world record.
06:48Singleton doesn't wade around.
06:50There's two platforms going at the moment.
06:52And, no, Magnus Fair Magnussen says you didn't hold it at the top.
06:58And that's not good.
07:00Well, something's happened here with Singleton.
07:04Bjornsson makes it look like nothing.
07:06Absolutely nothing.
07:09He definitely didn't hold it long enough, Singleton.
07:11He's going to give it another go.
07:15His personal best, a thousand pounds, 453 kilos.
07:18This should be pretty easy.
07:20But something has gone wrong.
07:21You can see that.
07:22Yes.
07:24Something around the left knee.
07:25Well, we'll keep you up to date with Singleton.
07:31He's got to be one of the favorites for tonight's show, along with Bjornsson, of course.
07:35And even this man, Paddy Haynes, he is a great deadlifter.
07:40Let's take another look at what Singleton did there.
07:42He didn't lock his hips out, didn't get his hips through.
07:45He thought he got the down signal, hence the rather unhappy look.
07:52Hey, keep Britain tidy.
07:55Some frustration from Singleton.
07:59No kidding.
08:00But no excuse for lettering.
08:02No, there's never an excuse.
08:03You're right there, Danny.
08:05No.
08:05Glad you said it, not me, though.
08:07Here we go.
08:08Our first pair up at 440.
08:11Big Gav Bilton strapping on.
08:13Paddy Haynes on the other side, ready to pull and he can go in every once.
08:16Well, Paddy Haynes continues an amazing run he's been having of late.
08:27Oh, this will be something else as well if Big Gav got it.
08:30And he does.
08:31That's a Welsh record there for Big Gav Bilton.
08:36Tremendous lifting.
08:39He's pretty happy, too.
08:43Mettering his own record by 15 kilograms.
08:45Well done, Gav.
08:46He's absolutely delighted.
08:48Gavin Bilton, Welsh deadlift record.
08:55Yeah, yeah.
08:56What was that for you, mate?
08:57Oh, it was easy.
08:58I could do it again if I wanted to.
09:00I trained hard.
09:01This is a game of nutrition.
09:03Of course, I won £1,000.
09:05440 is a great number.
09:06I bow out.
09:07Let's go and win the rest of the show.
09:09And just very quickly, those are the facts.
09:11What does that one mean to you?
09:12It means a lot.
09:15Like I said, I almost gave this up a couple of weeks ago.
09:18So, yeah, I'm happy to be here.
09:19It means a lot.
09:20It's not just a number on the buy.
09:21It means a lot.
09:23We saw it, mate.
09:23Massive congratulations.
09:24Show ahead.
09:25Thank you very much.
09:25Awesome.
09:27We'll move on to 453 kilos.
09:32And it's Paddy Haynes.
09:35Yes, 453, an unusual number, but it converts to £1,000.
09:39So, these men trying to join the £1,000 club.
09:46Paddy Haynes on the left, looking solid.
09:51He's great at reps.
09:52Can he do this for his match lift?
09:53Yes, he can.
09:54Well, Paddy Haynes, he's in that £1,000 club.
09:59He's looking for his certificate and his membership card now.
10:02Well, this is huge.
10:03Well, this is huge.
10:05Unbelievable.
10:06He's such a talent.
10:07He's had an incredible year.
10:08He's had an incredible year, Paddy Haynes.
10:10Bryce Johnson on the far side.
10:12Just got it to his shins and no more.
10:14But after a couple of pulls, it wasn't perfectly clean.
10:17He managed to get it up.
10:18He managed to get it up.
10:19£1,000.
10:20Paddy Haynes.
10:21You came here for a PB.
10:22You're leaving with £1,000.
10:25Mate, unbelievable.
10:27I'm absolutely lost for words, Radz.
10:30I'm surprised myself there.
10:31Like, that's a 45 kilo PB in less than a year.
10:36I don't care what happens now.
10:39Do you know what I mean?
10:40It's a lifetime goal ticked off.
10:42And I know there's more coming as well.
10:44It's coming on, man.
10:45I'm not the guy that can move anymore.
10:47I'm sort of becoming this rounded athlete,
10:49quite literally at the minute, but it's paid off.
10:52And I couldn't be happier.
10:53Mate, game on for the show.
10:54Game on, boys.
10:56Mass moves mass as ever.
10:58For plenty of deadlift drama to come in Birmingham
11:01as we close in on that world record attempt in the deadlift
11:04with you-know-who on Giants Live.
11:15Well, welcome back to Birmingham and the World Deadlift Championship.
11:26Well, we're going into round number five
11:28and all of the men in the red are out of the competition.
11:32Rag failed for 70 kilos, which is round five.
11:35Flores and Heinle have skipped.
11:37So we have Bishop and Bjornsson still to come.
11:40Only one man has attempted and made it.
11:43Yes, Austin Andrade was successful at 470.
11:47After a little lie down, decided to call it a day.
11:54So two men to come, Bishop and Bjornsson.
11:57We haven't seen Bjornsson since 420 kilos.
12:00Bishop, of course, pulled the thousand pounds.
12:03So this isn't a huge jump for him,
12:05but it is a very big jump for Bjornsson.
12:09We're down to just one platform now.
12:13Now, this would be a great moment for Adam Bishop.
12:17This would be his personal best.
12:19Bishop, he's lifted this kind of weight on numerous occasions
12:25coming into the world deadlift champs,
12:27but he's often gambled too high.
12:28So he's going to try and consolidate.
12:30Get the 470.
12:31He's done it.
12:32Surely.
12:33And it seemed pretty easy.
12:37There could be more.
12:40There could be more.
12:41Great lift from Adam Bishop.
12:43Just the last couple of inches he struggled,
12:45sunk his hips, drove it through.
12:48Well, he's with his old university mate Radzi now.
12:50Come on.
12:55Come on.
12:58Adam Bishop.
12:59Yeah.
12:59I recall being in Loughborough,
13:01you pulling 300 kilos off the floor
13:03and that was really impressive.
13:05Mate, you've put 170 kilos on that
13:07and made it look smooth.
13:09How was it for you?
13:10I'm also about 50 kilos every in body weight
13:12since those days.
13:12I'd hope so, but it felt really good.
13:14That was the plan going in.
13:15I wanted that 470 pull.
13:17Improvement on where I was, you know, in 2021.
13:20And it moved well.
13:20So, yeah, I'm very happy.
13:21In all seriousness,
13:22the last time I spoke to you,
13:24things were very, very different.
13:25Yeah.
13:25Look at you now.
13:27Exactly.
13:27But, you know, the power just gave me
13:28a little bit more time
13:29so I can get prepared and ready to go.
13:31And yeah, it's, everything's changed.
13:33And just a word for your journey.
13:35So you've tried deadlift before,
13:37ruptured bicep, ruptured tricep, ruptured Achilles.
13:40And here we are in the 470 club.
13:42It's actually unbelievable, mate.
13:43Yeah, man.
13:44I'm very happy.
13:44Obviously, you know, these things can knock you down.
13:46You can't let them keep you down.
13:48And that's the other thing I kind of live to
13:49is always focus on what I can do.
13:51And obviously, for a while,
13:53I couldn't walk around,
13:53but I can still train.
13:55And obviously, I wanted to get back
13:56and pull something big.
13:57And that's what I've done.
13:58Thanks for your time, mate.
14:02Well, amazing work from Adam Bishop.
14:05But now, all thoughts turn to this man,
14:08half-floor Julius Bjornsson.
14:11Well, if we're going to get 510 kilos up today,
14:14that's a 40-kilo jump from this.
14:17So you'd hope this isn't too difficult for Bjornsson.
14:21We'll read a lot into how this goes up.
14:26Good Lord.
14:27Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
14:29Not bad.
14:30Wow.
14:31Not bad at all.
14:33He's the only man that dwarfs this equipment.
14:36Yes, he does, isn't it?
14:38That is a standard bar you would see in any competition.
14:41My goodness me, there was no hits, nothing.
14:45In fact, there wasn't even a scream or a roar.
14:47That was just another day at the office.
14:51We are surely going for the world record now.
14:54Let's have a look.
14:55470 kilos, both Bjornsson and Bishop and Andrade all making that.
15:00Flores and Heinle, of course, have skipped.
15:03And we go to 480 kilos now, where Bjornsson is skipping.
15:08So, uh, two men going for 480 and it'll be the Mexican Flores,
15:13the new all-American record holder.
15:17Well, he did 475 kilos.
15:18So this will be five kilos up on his own all-America's record.
15:24So Flores and Heinle next to go with Flores first.
15:29He doesn't roll it in, which is unusual, but gives it a good hit.
15:39He's got very long arms for his size, that's for sure, but doesn't quite get it.
15:44To be fair, it was only a matter of a couple of weeks ago he did that record.
15:48He's been flown in at the last minute and given it his best.
15:52Still have Heinle though.
15:57And of course, if Bjornsson were to go for the record and fail and Heinle were to pull this,
16:02he'd win the competition.
16:04So much riding on this.
16:07It's all to play for, for Rhyno Heinle.
16:10Looks good off the floor, but he's stuck at the knees.
16:20That took it out of him and then they will get much more out of Heinle.
16:24We've seen Heinle too, I like his spangly shoes, by the way.
16:28I made those.
16:32Well, he's been there before in this territory.
16:34He's been the Masters World Record holder for some time now.
16:37So it all comes down to one big lift and I'm assuming we're going to go for 5.10 here.
16:43505 kilos done in Germany about a month ago.
16:47And yes, indeed.
16:50Oh, my goodness.
16:51To a world record attempt.
16:55For the mountain himself.
16:58Apthor Julius Bjornsson back after six years.
17:02Yes, indeed, he's been boxing, he's been doing all kinds of different things.
17:08And now he's getting very, very strong again.
17:10Badminton, ping pong.
17:12All of them.
17:13You name it, he can do it.
17:14But the lure of the deadlift was too great.
17:18Arguably, the number one lift in all of Strongman, all of strength sports right here.
17:24The deadlift, the king of lifts.
17:27And his chance now, just to take another five kilos away from the rest of the world.
17:34510 kilograms on the bar.
17:39That's over 1,122 pounds.
17:42Feels like he's just supposed to do this.
17:48He turns up, determined.
17:52That's when he's unstoppable.
17:54Can he do 5.10?
17:57Oh, my goodness.
17:58Oh, yes, he can.
18:00That was so easy, Danny.
18:02Rolled it in.
18:03Not a single hitch there.
18:04Nothing.
18:06That just flew up.
18:07How much more is there?
18:09Well, that is a new world record for Iceland's Bjornsson.
18:16Well, he's taking the $100,000 check as well, which is worth roaring about.
18:21Extraordinary.
18:21I don't want to go for that.
18:25You don't know who his dad is.
18:26He's the very tall one there.
18:29Bjorn.
18:30Very tall man indeed.
18:31Great guy.
18:32And congratulations, Hapthor.
18:35510 kilos.
18:36He knows it's now out of sight from the rest of the world.
18:39And if anyone chased him, there's more.
18:44Well, Hapthor Julius Bjornsson takes that world record.
18:48And he's with Radzi right now.
18:52Hapthor, history has been made.
18:54And you made it look extremely easy.
18:56How was it from your end?
18:58It felt extremely good, you know.
19:00I think with the crowd here, dude in this arena helped a lot.
19:06I feed off the crowd.
19:08I get more energy from the crowd.
19:10I love the crowd.
19:12And I came in strong, you know.
19:14I've been training really, really, really hard for this.
19:17Things have gone well in training and I'm the strongest I've ever been, so I'm really, really happy.
19:23And to do it in front of your family as well?
19:24It means everything.
19:25You know, having them here and hearing my son cheering me on, it means everything.
19:31And just finally, where does that put in the annals of your greatness?
19:36All the things you've achieved, you've won everything.
19:38Where does that stand?
19:39This has to be, like, out there, you know, like, people love world records.
19:44I love world records, but also love titles, you know.
19:47I want everything there is to win in Strongman when I was active, you know.
19:52And, you know, this has to be up there with all of my big accomplishments.
19:59Just to say, as a Strongman fan, as a fan of strength, to witness greatness like that, it was a privilege.
20:04So, Hatful, thank you.
20:05Thank you so much.
20:07The mighty Thor, after so long away from the sport, setting a mighty new world record and sending a warning to the rest of Strongman.
20:15Joint second behind him, Bishop and Andrade, with what, in any other context, would surely be winning lifts.
20:20On to the next event.
20:21Well, thanks, James.
20:23Yes, the farmers walk up next.
20:25A 150 kilo weight in each hand, like lifting a sumo wrestler in each hand and then having a jog.
20:32Yes, for 30 meters as well, and it's been done by Luke Stoltman.
20:3614 seconds, he completed it in.
20:38Tristan Howarth, 0.8 of a second behind him.
20:41And Evan Singleton, I'm afraid, is out.
20:44He's withdrawn.
20:45So, up next, Eddie Williams and Gavin Bilton, chasing down that Stoltman lead and they're off.
20:53This is a very fast start from Eddie Williams, look at him go.
20:57Wow, absolutely flying down the course.
21:00He's going to be done any second here.
21:01He's going to go ahead of Stoltman, surely.
21:03Yes, he has.
21:05Well, that's very, very fast indeed from Australia's Williams.
21:08Gavin Bilton, though, struggling once you've let them drop very hard to get going again.
21:13No doubt exhausted from pulling that Welsh record 440 kilos earlier.
21:18He's digging in deep though, he's almost to the line.
21:21Come on, Gab, you can do it.
21:23Oh, a little bounce.
21:25Will he get away with it?
21:26I think he does.
21:27Well, 32.69 for Gavin Bilton.
21:31What about this from Eddie Williams?
21:34Tremendous, extraordinary.
21:36He's just about as fast laden as unladen.
21:39Amazing.
21:41We move on then.
21:42Bryce Johnson from America, Britain's Paddy Haynes and Matt Ragg, the Kiwi.
21:49Yes, the big Bryce Johnson on the far side.
21:52Paddy Haynes, who's a tremendous athlete in the center.
21:54But it's Johnson, the American, who had great power off the floor,
21:58but he's gone down and now it's the turn of the Kiwi.
22:01Can he get to the line first?
22:03Well, it's the tortoise and the hare, isn't it?
22:0514.3 for Matt Ragg.
22:08Wow.
22:09Paddy Haynes, slower and steadier in the middle, 18.27.
22:14Bit of a shock there.
22:15I thought Paddy Haynes was going to storm through on that one.
22:17He's got such a good grip.
22:19But those who lifted really heavy in the deadlift seem to just be hampered a bit here.
22:25Does that mean Bjornsson's going to be very slow?
22:27We'll find out, I guess.
22:30Great stuff from Ragg.
22:31A little slower than Stoltman and Eddie Williams still holds the lead.
22:34Andrade, Bishop, and Bjornsson now.
22:43Sapthor Bjornsson closest to camera.
22:45How much has he given away in the deadlift?
22:48Adam Bishop looking really good.
22:50Does Bjornsson have a second gear here to try and catch him?
22:54Oh, he doesn't have to.
22:56He's gone down, Bishop.
22:58Well, Bjornsson, 15.58.
23:01The only man to just keep hanging on.
23:04Disappointing for Bishop there.
23:06Coming in last, 19.97.
23:08Yeah, and Austin Andrade, he was close as well.
23:11But he too went down.
23:12So just 18.21 seconds for the Mexican.
23:17Slow and steady was the order there for Bjornsson.
23:21And that grip didn't give up.
23:23That gave him the win in this heat.
23:25So, the man from down under doing a number on the rest of the field in event two.
23:34Eddie Williams, the clear winner.
23:36So close between Luke Stoltman in second, though, and fifth place Bryce Johnson.
23:40Sapthor coming in sixth.
23:42And that means, overall, Thor's lead has narrowed to just half a point now from Matt Ragg.
23:47Close behind the Kiwi, Austin Andrade and Eddie Williams.
23:51Bishop, Haynes and Stoltman all needing to make up ground.
23:57It's been a remarkable evening so far for the mountain.
24:00That world record.
24:01And now, sitting on top of his first Giants life back after six years.
24:05The rest of the field with a mountain to climb when we return.
24:09Welcome back to Birmingham.
24:22If you're just joining us, Thor is back.
24:24And looking like he'd never been away.
24:26The big man setting a deadlift world record earlier tonight.
24:29And currently leading in the Strongman Open.
24:31Can his rivals close the gap in our next event?
24:34Let's find out with Colin and Danny.
24:36Well, thanks James, and yes, the sandbag steeplechase Colin.
24:41Yes, two 150 kilogram sacks.
24:44That's at 330 pounds in the hands.
24:47Has to be taken down the course.
24:49And this is what's happened so far.
24:51Matt Ragg managed to finish all four runs.
24:54Two runs in each shuttle, as it were.
24:5642 seconds is the time to beat.
24:59Well, Bilton, Haynes and Andrade are next.
25:02And it's not just a case of lifting and carrying these bags.
25:05You've got to chuck them over that hurdle as well.
25:08Yes, it's broken down into four segments.
25:11Two for each sack.
25:12And Paddy Haynes over the first segment.
25:15The further you can throw it, the better, of course, for the second part of it.
25:18This is very, very fast from Paddy Haynes.
25:21He sold this event at Britain's Strongest Man, so he knows what it's like.
25:27It's hard.
25:28That is the answer.
25:29Nearly slipping there in his pimsels.
25:30This is very rare.
25:31You see a strong man moving as quickly as Haynes.
25:34Sprinting back.
25:35But it's worthwhile.
25:36He's just a ferocious athlete.
25:39He really is.
25:4042 seconds is the time to beat.
25:4242 and a half.
25:43Keep your eyes on the clock.
25:44Paddy Haynes, I think, is going to do it.
25:46And does it with style.
25:48Paddy Haynes, 38.94 seconds.
25:52That's Gavin Bilton.
25:54Next to complete.
25:56Look at Gavin, good fitness there.
25:58For a man who's well over 400 pounds.
26:01That's not bad at all.
26:03Now, change of technique over here for Andrade.
26:09Doesn't look like he's having fun.
26:11Now, I'm not sure it's the best technique.
26:14He's starting to run out of time.
26:16And energy.
26:17Yeah, energy's virtually on zero here.
26:20I think he might just give this a little cuddle
26:22and that'll be time up.
26:23I've never seen a more fed up looking strong man.
26:27He'd had enough, hadn't he?
26:29He's just such a big man.
26:30Of course, all of these men bulking up for the deadlift.
26:33But Paddy Haynes, such an athlete.
26:37Certainly hampered him the least.
26:39As that was a tremendous time.
26:44Bjornsson, Johnson.
26:46And from Canada, Hoeth.
26:50So, referee down Saturday gets us underway.
26:53Hoeth closest to camera.
26:54He's the lightest.
26:55You'd expect him to probably be the quickest at this.
26:57The cop.
26:58But Bryce Johnson at 6'6 and Hafthor at 6'9.
27:02They certainly don't find the hurdles too difficult.
27:04Just the size of Hafthor there.
27:11And that big stride of his just chews the ground up.
27:14And he's looking very fit for a man who's weighing in at around 200 kilograms in body weight.
27:20440 pounds.
27:22Now, will he gas out here on this second sack?
27:25It must be nice releasing that sandbag but then realizing you have to pick it up again.
27:31Not so good.
27:32I don't think he's going to beat Paddy Haynes.
27:34In fact, he's gone behind that.
27:35But still, it looks very solid indeed for Bjornsson.
27:38This will get him good points.
27:39Yes, solid's the word there.
27:4147 and a quarter for Hafthor Bjornsson.
27:45Take a neck here.
27:46Canada.
27:47Race to the finish.
27:48Canada just ahead of America.
27:50Howard nicked it.
27:5256.81 versus 57.76 for Bryce Johnson.
28:00I'm not sure that's a face of pleasure.
28:02But he's digging in.
28:03He's a fighter, Bjornsson.
28:07Well, Hafthor making top Thor in event three.
28:10But his time beaten by his rival Matt Ragg, by Luke Stoltman and above all by the winner.
28:15of this event, Paddy Haynes.
28:17Ratsy's with him now.
28:18Paddy Haynes, you're probably mixing it with the big boys here.
28:21You're some of the strongest men on planet Earth and you are top three now.
28:24Yes, absolutely crazy.
28:25I've got two Damage Limitation events, that's all.
28:27These front hold I've never done in competition.
28:30I've never done the Viking press either.
28:32So for me, like today, it's just a case of get out there, do the best I can, have some fun,
28:36try some new events out and power stairs are usually quite loyal at the end.
28:40So hopefully finish on a high.
28:42And just finally, we talk about a secret weapon.
28:44When it comes to nutrition, people might have isotonic drinks.
28:48They might think about rice or chicken or broccoli.
28:50What have you been having?
28:51I've just munched my second jam sandwich and I have no regrets.
28:55Jam sandwich for the win, sir.
28:56Honestly, I'm like Paddington Bear on holiday.
28:58I just keep it super simple.
29:00Hump up the jam.
29:01Paddy into third after that event win.
29:03We'll see if he can preserve that podium place.
29:06Thor slips into second.
29:07Matt Ragg takes over on top.
29:09Coming up, it's hammer time.
29:11Well, thanks James.
29:13And yes, the hammer hold is next.
29:1530 kilos this hammer.
29:16How long can you hold it out in front of you?
29:1866 pounds.
29:20And well, Eddie Hall has the world record of 65 seconds.
29:23And this is what's happened so far.
29:25Tristan Hoeth has done the longest.
29:2739.56 seconds.
29:29But the man in second there, Ragg from New Zealand.
29:3239.12.
29:33He leads the competition.
29:35And then once again putting in a very steady performance.
29:39Two pairs to come.
29:41So the first pair, Hafthor Bjornsson of Iceland and Britain's Luke Stoltman.
29:51As you said earlier, Luke Stoltman, arguably the strongest shoulders in the world.
29:55But don't tell Hafthor Bjornsson, he'll make him mad.
29:58Because he can just about do anything.
30:00He really shouldn't be good at this Bjornsson.
30:02He's got long, long arms.
30:04And that works against you in biomechanics.
30:06But he's dug in hard.
30:08Oh, a little shake already at 15 seconds.
30:11This will be interesting.
30:12Well, 39.56 to beat.
30:15And now Luke Stoltman trying to find his happy place.
30:17Very difficult to find a happy place when you're holding a hammer this heavy.
30:23This really is mind over matter.
30:25And it looks like the matter is winning against Stoltman.
30:2837, 38.
30:30Oh, he goes just before Hoeth.
30:32But what a fight there from Luke Stoltman as Hafthor Bjornsson continues.
30:37And he's got the lead.
30:39That's for sure.
30:40By some margin now.
30:41Is he going to make a minute?
30:42Not quite.
30:4351 seconds off.
30:45And that's absolutely wiped him.
30:49Well, 50.78 for Hafthor Bjornsson.
30:52Puts him very comfortably in the lead.
30:55I think Darren Sadler was worried he's going to have to catch him there.
30:58That would have been a strongman feat in itself.
31:01And that was a real battle Bjornsson.
31:03You can see how much this means to him.
31:05Not just the world record in deadlift, but to win overall.
31:14And that was the second Darren realized he might go over.
31:16Well, what did it take out of Hafthor Bjornsson?
31:22And was it worth it?
31:24As we move on to our final pair.
31:26Williams and Johnson.
31:28Can these guys close the gap to the top position?
31:32They know what they have to do now to take the win here.
31:37This hammer hold.
31:3850.78 seconds.
31:41That's what's needed.
31:42Both tall men.
31:43Both have long arms.
31:44That works against both of them.
31:46Eddie Williams looks like a man who's...
31:48Well, he's found his zen.
31:50At least for the moment.
31:52Johnson definitely got a bit of a wobble gate.
31:56You can find that zen.
31:58But it tends to disappear very rapidly.
32:02Yes, the lactic acid sure does build up in your shoulders very quickly.
32:06And there's no way to move it and shake it and get rid of it.
32:11Williams goes down.
32:12He was looking good early.
32:14Around about the time of Hoeth.
32:16And can Johnson hang on much longer?
32:18No.
32:19So it'll be Bjornsson who'll take the win here.
32:22Quite a great showing from both Williams and Johnson.
32:26Just as Williams put it down.
32:30It was as if Johnson had permission to do the same.
32:37As you might expect, Thor proving unbeatable on the hammer.
32:41The Icelander lasting more than seven seconds longer than Bryce Johnson.
32:45The only other man to make it beyond 40 agonizing seconds.
32:48Backstage, has that performance taken its toll on the Icelander?
32:54Returning now from his long absence and taking his time to recover.
32:58How much does Thor have left in him for the final two events?
33:02For now, he's moved back into top spot in the Strongman Open.
33:05Matt Ragg just a point and a half behind though.
33:08We're just two and a half points between the next five men.
33:11Ratty is with the leader right now.
33:13Thor, how nuts is it that five tens easier than front hold?
33:17You know what? My body is just wrecked right now.
33:21After the five, ten, I was in like the happy place.
33:24You know, we don't feel anything as I'm just happiness.
33:26You know, I was so happy with my performance, you know.
33:28But now after the time has passed and I've done a few more events, my body is just wrecked.
33:33Thanks for having me.
33:34Thanks for having me.
33:35Thank you, thank you, sir.
33:36Well, Thor's comeback story is not the only tale being told tonight in Birmingham.
33:40With two events to go, tension is mounting for everyone at the Strongman Open.
33:44We're back with more on Giants Live.
33:47Welcome back to Giants Live in Birmingham.
34:01It's been an extraordinary night so far here.
34:03Hafthor Bjornsson, back from retirement, breaking the deadlift world record in his first event.
34:12Now, after three more challenges, Hafthor is still leading the field at the Strongman Open.
34:19Can he hold on and take the title?
34:21Let's find out with Colin and Danny.
34:23Well, thanks, James.
34:24Yes, six events tonight and after four.
34:27Here's where we are.
34:28Hafthor Bjornsson has shifted the paradigm of what is possible in Strongman.
34:32He's on top with 40 points, having also pulled a world record in deadlift today.
34:37And now we move on to the Viking press.
34:40Matt Ragg and others who are the chasing pack will have to try and get some good reps in here.
34:44150 kilos overhead, 60 seconds to do as many as possible.
34:49Well, Paddy Haynes went earlier with the likes of Andrade and Stoltman on 10.
34:53But Williams sits on top with 13.
34:58So we move on to Matt Ragg and Tristan Howarth.
35:01These guys, second and third in the standings.
35:05This is an opportunity, perhaps, for Ragg to put some serious pressure on Thor,
35:09if he can get a big enough number here.
35:12Yes, and Howarth, who's just a great all-round competitor, attacks this first.
35:15He's not wasting any of his time.
35:17I'm not sure either man will be pressing for 60 seconds.
35:21That will be impressive if they did.
35:23And Ragg has caught him.
35:26Wolfman have to be careful.
35:28The handles have to pass your ear.
35:31That's right, have to come down deep enough.
35:33And Howard's finished on seven.
35:35Ragg, can he get double figures?
35:37No.
35:38Well, I think that will be that for Matt Ragg.
35:41Managers nine.
35:46We still have one pair to come in.
35:48That has Bjornsson in it.
35:50It'll be fascinating to see if Bjornsson can again dig deep.
35:54These two guys did their best, but couldn't get past Williams.
35:58So, limited in how many points they will pull back here.
36:02Bryce Johnson, Hafthor Bjornsson, next to go.
36:08Two absolute giants.
36:10The six foot six Johnson gets underway very quickly.
36:13And Bjornsson is the fatigue starting to build now.
36:20He pulled that world record deadlift.
36:21Surely that's taken an enormous amount out of him.
36:24Johnson, is he almost going too quickly here?
36:27That's nine.
36:28That's ten.
36:29Great use of the legs as if he's shot putting it up.
36:32Exploding with 150 kilos.
36:35But Bjornsson slow and steady on the other side.
36:38Still ticking away.
36:39He's equaled Williams.
36:40He's gone in the lead.
36:41Johnson.
36:42And Bjornsson for double figures.
36:44Does he lock out?
36:45Yes.
36:46Yes.
36:47He does.
36:48But look at this from Johnson.
36:49A massive 15 reps.
36:52Oh, goodness me.
36:57One to beat Williams and one just for fun.
37:00I have to say, Bryce Johnson is proving to be a star in the making.
37:04Hafthor Bjornsson, once again, a gritty performance and good points.
37:09Bryce, what a performance.
37:11And I guess with your NFL background, we should never have doubted it.
37:14Viking Press has been really good for me in the past.
37:17I don't know what it is, if it's just the leg drive.
37:19I get most of my power on my legs anyway, so it was a great event.
37:23How tough is it to continue that power as you get into those big reps?
37:27I mean, you can definitely feel it.
37:29You know, I hit right around ten.
37:30I was like, I don't know how many more I've got left, but I really want a podium spot.
37:34So, just kept grinding.
37:36And just touching on that, one event to go, you're now joint second.
37:40I mean, right in the mix.
37:42Yup.
37:43I'm stoked.
37:44Power Series is a great event for me in the past, so I'm excited.
37:47Game on.
37:48Yeah.
37:49Thank you, guys.
37:50Yup.
37:51Thank you, sir.
37:52The American with a potentially very significant win there.
37:55A massive 15 reps, two more than Eddie Williams.
37:58Gavin Bilton taking third, while Thor tied fourth with a cluster of other strongmen.
38:03And that means that while Thor is still top with one event to go,
38:07Bryce Johnson has moved up to tie Matt Rack for second spot.
38:11Kristen Hoer still in with a shout of taking a podium position.
38:14It's back to Colin and Danny.
38:16Thanks, James.
38:17And yes, we move on to the power stairs, Colin.
38:20200 to 250 kilos.
38:22Weights, four of them have to be carried up these stairs, each one.
38:26And the fastest time wins.
38:28Simple as that.
38:29Paddy Haynes has done it.
38:30So do these other men.
38:31But he leads with 30.78 seconds.
38:35So Eddie Williams and Matt Rack, next up Australia and New Zealand to show off exactly how they get the shopping home.
38:50Yes, Williams on the left, the Australian, the New Zealander on the right.
38:54Matt Rack and oh, he has to get it over that lip.
38:57That's one of the rules.
38:58So it doesn't come back down at you when you're going on the next one.
39:01That's why.
39:02225 kilos on to 240 for Williams.
39:05And he's doing really well here.
39:07He might be able to beat the 30 seconds of Paddy Haynes.
39:11He's quick on the last one.
39:14Well, it will be very tight indeed, but you never know.
39:18I don't think he'd know.
39:20He didn't quite manage that.
39:22Eddie Williams, 32.89, should have been tighter.
39:25And Matt Rack gets it over the lip.
39:29So much depends on how you do that final pull to get it over the lip.
39:33It really cost you a lot of time, as it did for Matt Rack there.
39:39A pensive eye from Hapthor Bjornsson.
39:41This isn't sewn up yet.
39:43He's going to have to put in a performance.
39:45He's got a points lead.
39:47If he does a decent top three performance, he will win.
39:52But his exhaustion level surely is at its highest it's ever been.
39:58As he's on the right hand side, the Icelanders.
40:00Six foot nine against six foot six of Johnson in the USA on the left.
40:04Both very quick on the first one.
40:06Well, Johnson needs to not only put in a great time here,
40:09but he has to hope somehow that Thor crumbles.
40:14Bjornsson making really precise work on that final lift of each weight.
40:19He's getting over that lip and not taking any chances.
40:22Yes, very deliberate here from Hapthor Bjornsson as he gets ready to finish this off.
40:28Now, he wants to do quite enough to win the power stairs, but it doesn't matter.
40:33Because he's done enough to win the strong man open.
40:37Goodness me.
40:38Great showing from Johnson.
40:4036.59.
40:41But this is all about Hapthor Bjornsson back with a bang.
40:45His ninth Giants live title on a fantastic night of strength.
40:51Yes, you think about it.
40:52A world record.
40:53Well, that would have been enough.
40:54He could have sat out and retired from there.
40:56There's his mum and dad.
40:57His son.
40:58What a moment for him.
41:00Dad hangs in tears.
41:01And he stayed on and fought.
41:04And he might not have won every event, but he's won the World Open too.
41:08Welcome back, Hapthor Bjornsson.
41:14Just a word for your perseverance, your hardness, the determination,
41:20just to complete, let alone win, but just to get through it.
41:23How mentally tough you are.
41:25Yeah, you know, I've gone through a lot.
41:28I've fought a lot.
41:29Like, I've been in this sport for a long time.
41:31And, you know, if there's anything, anything that I'm stronger,
41:37that's to push myself to the limits.
41:39And I, tonight I definitely did that.
41:42That was, there were moments where I was just like, I want to just quit.
41:45But, you know, even though that thought comes in,
41:49I'll never quit.
41:50I know that within myself.
41:52I would never quit.
41:53But, I'm going to feel it tomorrow.
41:56How do you do it?
41:57How have you gone from basketball to strongman to boxing,
42:00back up to doing what you're doing now?
42:02And be as dominant as you are?
42:04If there's anything that I know, I learned a lot from my,
42:07from my dad and from my grandfather.
42:10Just how to work hard.
42:12They taught me how to work hard.
42:14And there was this mindset when I was younger.
42:18You just keep going no matter what.
42:20You know, there's no complaining.
42:22You just move forward.
42:23And, you know, it's paid off here.
42:26A true Viking performance.
42:28Unforgettable night.
42:29Thank you so much, Hapthor.
42:30Congratulations.
42:31Thank you so much.
42:33John Paul Sigversson, Magnus Ver Magnussen,
42:36and, of course, this man, Hapthor Bjornsson.
42:39The Icelanders really do perform.
42:42He's on top here at the World Open,
42:44ahead of Johnson in second.
42:45Bragg taking third.
42:47Well, a welcome return to Hapthor Julius Bjornsson.
42:51On top tonight.
42:53Number one tonight.
42:55Number one tonight.
