Tobin has trained his kids well, even they were roasting Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel during his post game press conference. The dreaded topic gets addressed... The Miami Dolphins got hammered by the Cincinnati Bengals 45 to 21. Why can't the Dolphins adjust after halftime?

00:00she was just going in on mike mcdaniel and just talking about what like how unbearable it was to
00:05hear the guy and she's right i can't like i can't disagree with her he's got no answers he's got no
00:12answers and wait wait but what then what did tommy say oh i mean tommy was just trying to like he was
00:20he was just in the he was doing he was trying to get in he's trying to get in he was trying to get
00:25in he's just he just kept going um um um like in the back like the whole time it was crazy
00:31and you're up there fist pumping i just thought it was hilarious like this was unprompted we were
00:37just listening to it and she's just like who is this guy he's like he doesn't know how to talk
00:42why that's the dolphins head coach everybody says that though until you get in that position
00:48right it's not the easiest thing like you say oh man he makes it harder he makes it harder
00:54he makes it more difficult he tries to answer too many questions instead of just answering the
00:59one question then we get sidetracked to where he doesn't even answer the original question
01:04yep that's how it goes saying that's a good question doesn't um what
01:09this was him yesterday on how they stink in the third quarter
01:14well i think um you know uh i would i'll go through i could go through all the things that
01:20we've tried to do and they've been unsuccessful um because it's not like it hasn't been on our radar
01:26um this this has been something that uh you and collectively we you know those 27 points
01:33are probably um all in uh games where the you know the after halftime momentum um you know is is
01:43in our favor it's not good enough um you have to be able to um uh come out from halftime and adjust
01:51and uh we aren't um uh executing that at all so uh back to the drawing board and all things are on
02:01the table for that because it's um i could have i i knew it was a ratio like that um which bottom line
02:08is not gonna um you're not gonna win more football games than you lose uh doing things
02:14like that or or playing the type of brand that we expect for ourselves so um not good enough
02:21so so i'm sorry what was that shut up so so here's the deal it's one thing
02:33to say you're making adjustments or halftime adjustments or whatever
02:39i'm not privy to what plays are called all i can do is look on on the field and see what they are
02:50doing and come to my conclusion without knowing what what's being called and there are certain
02:57plays that they run that are staples of their offense and soon as a team or a defense starts
03:05stopping those plays they don't have any counters off of that play that gives the appearance they run
03:11the same play but run a different play that's what i mean about adjustments you always you know
03:17good offensive coaches always stay one step ahead of the defense and that soon as you pick up what we
03:24did we're on to the next thing but for some reason with this team all year since mike has been here
03:34the defense catches up before you even attempt to do something different but by then it's too late
03:39because now you can't do the thing that they're defending and if that's the basis point then once you
03:46start having success doing that that's when you have them have the defense up against them then you can
03:52start doing nuances from that and always go back to the one thing that worked well instead of waiting
03:59for them to catch up and not being able to ever go back and they've done this year and they've done
04:06this game after game after game so like i'm no offensive guru but i can look on the field and tell you
04:14and we've watched games and i say here's what i would do right now here's the adjustment i would make
04:20right now before they get caught up so you stay one step ahead that's what good offensive coaches do
04:25so i'll give you a perfect example with the canes they run that guy around the back a bunch of times
04:33they fake the counter look how a genius this is they fake the counter everybody knows linebackers
04:40follow the guards right they pull the guards to the left of the to the other side
04:47and then ran the ball back out the right with with a sweep with one of your fastest guys on the field
04:53that's it and it all starts with your guy that ran 470 yards that's running the counter with those
05:03two pulling pulling guards so guess where everybody's going everybody's gonna follow those
05:08guards everybody's gonna follow that running back and now you run a reverse at the right time
05:14to where there's nobody over there do you think it's like this has obviously been a problem all
05:19year yes i think he's capable of doing it because like the idea that the idea like maybe his stuff is
05:26just so complex or so in the weeds that like he needs the week to prepare for it they'd look good
05:32usually come out of the gate and then they don't have nothing once it's once that once that juice
05:35is run out they just don't feel like they they don't feel like they have anything else to go to
05:40but but but you always have something else to go to well then he's like it's not a new set of plays
05:46yeah well right it's like you know what i can line my guys up in the same spot and here's the thing
05:53about defenses you have certain dbs that read line where where the wide receivers line up because
05:59depending on where you line up on a football field determines what route you can run and so
06:05these defenders these you know top notch defenders look at where you line up on the field go through
06:12their rolodex eliminate half of the plays because you're not going to run routes we've watched film
06:16you're not going to run this route this route this route from this position right okay now you line up
06:21you line up in three wides to the left uh-oh this is where they normally run that little bubble screen
06:28so we're going to kind of creep up a little bit now you can line up the same way
06:35and run a pass play off of that and fake the quick pass you're going to have half of the defense coming
06:43forward they only need one step the wrong direction you're done that's what happened so that that's what
06:48happened with uh the running back was it chase brown right oh my god he had i felt bad for jordan brooks
06:53but but that's that's my point they ran an adjustment defenses are very good at reading
07:00certain things oh this is what they're in this is what they run i did my start i did my my uh
07:06preparation i'm on it and then if you run just the slightest little nuance of that and have that
07:13defender stepping in the wrong direction it's over but there's also an element too where i feel like he
07:18does things like even even goes away with what's working too like almost like there's a there's a
07:24he thinks he he gives the defense too much credit like i'm a firm believer that if it's working keep
07:30doing it or keep lining up that way until they stop it and you have to go like what different why does
07:36let me ask you a question why does darren waller always have great first halves and then he's just
07:41forgotten about because he doesn't stop being six seven right and um i'm sitting here and i'm sitting
07:46here confused because like obviously the dolphins go and do things like they can't take away jamar
07:51chase you want to know why he's a he's a monster he's gonna go most people so like why all of a
07:55sudden does it become the dulcet second half this has happened like four games this year where darren
08:00waller is like is it because he can only be prepared for the plays during the week and then they just
08:05forget about like i don't understand he because one play here was one play throw it to him i'm taller
08:09than you took it away so why does it get i don't think he did i think he did if you mic'd him up i think
08:16darren waller took it off his head like a little dwarf he's like took it off his head and so i'm
08:22wondering like how come you stop doing that what what why why do why go away from that he doesn't
08:27stop being tall my other thing is is that there's a fine line in some of the things that we're talking
08:35about like they can rotate coverages and defend him right or the coach make the assumption that they
08:45are and change up before they've ever stopped it yeah and i think sometimes that's what i think
08:50is how sometimes what happens with mike mcdale is there's things that are working that he says oh
08:57they're probably going to be on to it so i'm going to do something else without really fully understanding
09:03that so your adjustment could be lining up like you're going to do the same thing have them think
09:10you're going to do the same thing and then have a twist on it to where now you have the thing about
09:16defense all you want one step in the wrong direction if you if that secondary or that linebacker or that
09:25safety take one step in the wrong direction with the speed you have on offense you can get a lead i think
09:31a lot of stuff he does is like overthinking right exactly i just think that you could just tell based
09:36on the man that he's an overthinker right like the idea like putting the weasel on the active roster
09:42it's like that's a nice thing to do that sounds great oh that's a nice thing oh well quinn's got
09:50a rapport with him no you know what if you're the starting quarterback time to get rapport with the
09:53good guys that's that's what it's supposed to be right no i know i know but see and i feel bad
10:00because like i first of all i thought that was a tough call what they put on the kid where they blew
10:04away the the 32 yard i don't understand that kind of unravel and everything so i'm not excusing
10:08them giving up 30 gazillion unanswered points but you you keep going to the weasel and come on man
10:17what are we relying on we can't get a chain of the ball all of a sudden here's here's here's the
10:23other problem and and that i don't know if part of that is you figure oh he's had a couple of big
10:33catches they're probably going to take him out or they just locked him up so i know that a lot of
10:42defense and this is why you got to have kind of nuance to your offense they'll probably say you know
10:48what we're going to roll the coverage to this guy we're going to do this with the tight end we're
10:52going to take him out because he's killing us right what's your next option what is your your
10:57next adjustment it could be same plays it could be something along the lines of let's just swap two
11:04guys right so it screws up their defense because sometimes you'll swap guys and put guys in different
11:11positions and the defense would be confused that hey he's normally over here do we double him and now
11:18you've just singled him up with somebody else you but but i think this team has come off of especially
11:27offensively they've gone away from things that have worked for all the wrong reasons not because
11:36you're outsmarting them right what makes a an offensive guy an offensive guy is the nuance to the basic
11:43things not the fact that you can be ahead of the game and change the whole offense and i think
11:49sometimes mike changes so many things and gets away from what was working and having that nuance and
11:57that adjustment come off of the appearance that we're gonna keep doing the same things and that's
12:03what keeps you one step ahead of them i so i like for me i've seen it all year a lot of people wanted
12:12to go to other things as to why it was happening or why and to or to or to it that was the whole
12:18to a conversation it's never been about to or with me although i admit he's played the worst he's played
12:24in his career he stunk it's all i said that blad we don't have to yeah to a stunk but i think the coach
12:30stunk too but it but it's it's like i've never seen a team who has five or six plays work in the first
12:38half and you move the ball up and down the field and then the second half you can't get social
12:44distancing because dave made an adjustment to what was working so well for you and you have it and
12:50watching it over and over and over again becomes frustrating whether you're a fan or not
12:57on the field and the other half you know you're going to have a team who has been able to
