00:00:00and now let's turn our attention to the first of tonight's two main attractions the welterweight
00:00:04bout between unbeaten champion ike corte and challenger obakar ike corte gill gets less
00:00:10attention than the other three great welterweights or near welterweights in the world and i'm talking
00:00:16about pernell whitaker felix trinidad oscar de la hoya he's less well known than those other three
00:00:21is he as good as they are well i think he is as a matter of fact that if i was making odds on the
00:00:26fights i would make him favorites over all three of those guys and you know i said maybe i'm wrong
00:00:32so we called herb lambak the great uh boxing odds maker in las vegas to see how he would
00:00:38make the odds on these fights and the way he made them he had he had uh caught a a four to one favorite
00:00:45over pernell whitaker eight to five over felix trinidad and he called the oscar de la hoya fight
00:00:52a toss-up he said but only because delahoy would probably have the home court advantage that's
00:00:57strong stuff what makes corte so good well he's just such a solid fighter jim he throws he throws
00:01:02his punches well takes a great punch has great stamina and his left jab is so strong that it's
00:01:08better than most guys sunday punches let's go to the tail of the tape now for ike corte of ghana against
00:01:15oba car corte gives up two years in age he's 26 cars 24 a one inch height advantage for car
00:01:22and the one inch reach advantage but all in all physically they're pretty similar punch stat
00:01:26numbers larry let's take a look at these punch stat numbers and you can see how accurate these
00:01:32fighters were in their most recent big fights corte against vince phillips car against felix trinidad
00:01:39and of course the numbers are all in favor of corte and jabs that's the most unusual thing about
00:01:46corte is his thunderous left jab which he lands at a very high percentage and gill i'll take some of
00:01:55that four to one on pernell whitaker against corte and i love corte i'm not laying it either
00:02:03a couple of the earlier bounce tonight were scored by a brand new new york state boxing
00:02:07judge named julie letterman which makes harold letterman just the other judge in the letterman
00:02:14family rules harold thank you jim we're very proud of that the ike corte over car fight is scheduled
00:02:19for 12 rounds there is no standing eight count but the three knockdown rule is in effect only the referee
00:02:26can stop the fight and he can be saved by the bell in the 12th and final round only jim all right thank
00:02:31you harold i should have specified of course that julie is his daughter and believe me when he says he's
00:02:37proud of her that's an enormous understatement now here comes obakar zero and one in title fights of
00:02:42course like so many fighters his career more defined by his one loss than by his 39 victories in his last
00:02:50fight he knocked out benny barra but it's the loss to trinidad that haunts him and for which he wants in
00:02:56his own heart a measure of redemption tonight larry he says he's rededicated himself with his new managerial
00:03:04team including rory holloway he's a co-manager of mike tyson he says that being around tyson watching
00:03:11tyson work in the gym has made him step up to a higher level and another look excuse me larry a
00:03:19quick look at the record for obakar 39 wins one loss 25 ko's he does have some strength and
00:03:26punching power the question does he have enough to go against the latest great boxing product out of
00:03:32ghana first it was david poison cote and then it was the great azuma nelson and in more recent years
00:03:39it has been ike quartet began getting international exposure fighting in france notably in paris and
00:03:47then began coming here to the united states within the past couple of years and has shown himself to be
00:03:52a legitimate contender for the crown of best welterweight in the world despite the enormous
00:03:56depth in that division as we told you the division already occupied by pernell whitaker and felix
00:04:01trinidad and soon to be occupied we expect by oscar de la hoya and here comes quartet
00:04:11fifth defense of the welterweight championship in four previous title defenses he's fought 36 rounds
00:04:18and larry he's lost one of those 36 rounds on judges scorecards his only problem is that he
00:04:26comes from africa and it will be very difficult for him to get the kind of big following that could
00:04:33mean big money fights for some of these other outstanding welterweight if you haven't heard of
00:04:39forte before just this he's the 27th of 27 children of a father who had five wives he has an older brother who
00:04:49won a silver medal in boxing in the 1960 olympics that's the olympics most celebrated for a fellow
00:05:00named muhammad ali then known as cassius clay and another look good for the man regarded by many as
00:05:08the strongest welterweight in the world remember those numbers you'll see them again later tonight
00:05:14when we put up the record for the great roy jones jr let's go to michael buffer for the official

00:08:10All right good evening gentlemen you both know the rules of the WBA you've
00:08:25instructed earlier in the afternoon shake hands now good luck to both of you
00:08:30return to your corners
00:08:33this not only can be an outstanding fight it will also give us a measure of
00:08:43Quartey because Obakar gave Felix Trinidad probably his hardest fight
00:08:49Trinidad stopping him in the eighth round Obakar a strong fighter almost
00:08:58certainly a superior technician to Quartey's last American opponent
00:09:02play in the corner Vincent Phillips to Phillips a hard hitter I can't plug it
00:09:08out this is Arthur McCanty's 124th championship fight one of the most
00:09:13famous referees in the world I think we're going to see the key to this
00:09:17fight very very early Obakar said that he's been working with Mike McCallum and
00:09:22he's finally learned how to throw a good stiff jab he said he thinks he can out
00:09:27jab I Quartey if he can hold his own with that jab it's going to be a very very
00:09:32tough fight but again Quartey has that strong left jab and Quartey expects to
00:09:40dominate his opponents with the jab Gil so if Carr can indeed hold his own it
00:09:45might get it to Quartey's head a little bit well again Quartey's jab sets up
00:09:50everything else so because he once he starts hurting you with that jab he can
00:09:54feint it and really land those big power punches
00:10:00both fighters working almost exclusively with the jab in the first round you just
00:10:05saw Quartey bring a hook off the jab and now an overhand right so far Obakar
00:10:10boxing within a carefully controlled style
00:10:14Carr unleashes the right hand partially blocked by Quartey am I mistaken Gil or is
00:10:21there already some red under Obakar's eyes
00:10:26well Quartey did land a couple of good stiff left jabs in that exchange when they
00:10:32exchanged jabs and he's going to mark you up that's the way Joe Lewis every time Joe
00:10:36Lewis hit a guy with a jab he had a mark on him overhand right by Carr as they moved
00:10:41depart at center ring and Quartey kind of grinned at him as if to say oh you want
00:10:47to fight fiercely do you and again Quartey does have a swelling under his right eye not
00:10:53Quartey excuse me Carr has a swelling under his right eye the spot where Quartey
00:10:59sticks the jab mentioned the challenge that Vincent Phillips gave to Quartey he
00:11:05threw a hundred twenty punches in the second round against Quartey I mean
00:11:09literally unloaded the kitchen sink against him and and Quartey kind of
00:11:14shrugged it off and eventually blew him away and the reason he did that jam and
00:11:19Gill is because the book of Quartey was that he won't punch while you're
00:11:24punching he'll wait till you're finished and Phillips thought that that offense
00:11:28would be his best defense over car had them scouted pretty well he said the
00:11:34object of this is the failure combinations hit him but don't stand and
00:11:38wait for the receipt get out of there after you hit him but up to this point
00:11:43Quartey's putting pressure on moving behind that good strong left jab had a
00:11:49good quick short right hand inside it's remarkable to watch and see that Quartey has
00:11:59the strength so often to bust his jab right through Carr's guard Carr will have both gloves
00:12:04up ready to block it and over Carr finds his gloves split by the powerful jab of Quartey round
00:12:10one comes to a close and when we go to Quartey's corner our translator translating the
00:12:16Ghanan tribal God language is Fred a seafo yeah drink some water
00:12:23it's very important body punches okay don't drop your gun it's very important
00:12:43you have to time your punches okay you have to time your punches okay it's very very important
00:12:48you have to time your punches okay move that head alright watch you come out strong alright
00:13:02get that water man right there don't go straight to him and step up
00:13:05well if you subscribe to punch stat numbers from our friends at CompuBox then Carr needs to be more
00:13:19accurate with his jab Quartey threw 51 in the first round and landed half of them Carr threw 50 jabs of
00:13:25his own but only landed seven the one thing about Quartey he comes in and a straight line really doesn't
00:13:34bob and weave too much he should be pretty easy to nail every once in a while but he keeps his hands high
00:13:38and when he does throw that jab he doesn't leave himself wide open
00:13:42Quartey building up the punch count early here in round two as he becomes even more the aggressive
00:13:54than was the case in the first Carr slowing down his punch outfit just a little bit perhaps having tasted that
00:14:01jab too many times already now here comes Oba one of the things I've noticed Gil is it is the difference
00:14:09between a car fighting Quartey and Carr fighting uh Trinidad is that he had Carr had more time to think
00:14:17about Trinidad Trinidad came in at him but not in such an imposing almost overwhelming fashion right
00:14:24Quartey comes out you like a steamroller which is so difficult it's a wonder he doesn't get nailed once
00:14:32in a while as he did with that left jab just then because he really is he's almost a stationary fighter
00:14:38comes in a straight line at all times pretty good stretch there for Carr as he landed a right hand and
00:14:44then followed up with a couple of solid jabs but now Quartey begins to re-establish his initiative
00:14:49after McCantey stepping in between them Arthur McCantey does such a good job every time he goes in
00:15:01there I was always very confident when I had a guy fighting and he was a referee because he does a
00:15:06good job confident that you'd get a clean fight that's all I'm looking for a guy that doesn't make
00:15:10mistakes low blow by Carr McCantey warns him Carr with the tendency to fire low blows he was guilty of
00:15:21the same transgression against Trinidad and against Daryl Kohli Carr's got power he put Trinidad on the
00:15:28canvas he followed the career of the spectacular Puerto Rican welterweight you know that he has been
00:15:33subject occasionally to the early knockdown as was the case for Nella Hoya earlier in his career
00:15:38look over car is not really known as a one-punch knock about it if this is such a word in the
00:15:44English language he has to really put them together for him to hurt you that's true of most fighters of
00:15:57course it's true of forte as well although what's fearsome about corte is his ability to put all those
00:16:03punches together in rapid flurries but when nothing else is happening scoring points with that left
00:16:09you're boxing them good okay you're boxing really relaxed all right you're jabbing got strong in it
00:16:26around okay you're real relaxed now okay keep jabbing like you're jabbing buddy just keep stepping like
00:16:34you're stepping stepping over you and stepping over all right you ain't got to load up on the punches all right
00:16:38you need to run the combination I want you to get into the stomach area follow him at all times don't
00:16:48give him any breathing space follow him wherever he goes follow him stick to the body punches is very very
00:16:54important what do you want to try actually you're not you're not giving him too many body punches okay make
00:17:00sure you give him the body punches throw some more jabs
00:17:12over car like the great muhammad ali first took up boxing as a very young boy and he had a bicycle
00:17:21taken away from him by a bigger boy and he went to his dad and said i'd like to learn how to fight
00:17:25his dad had done some boxing in the marines and got started over right away
00:17:37car going to the body there and back to the body with the right hand
00:17:40good combination there by car but again arthur mccanty talks to him about low blows
00:18:10the right hand is throwing that right hand to the body and trying to come back with that left hook
00:18:20you can see the difference in strength in the two fighters though when they do get closer
00:18:25forte is by far the stronger individual
00:18:29again you see him coming in the straight line but he's got those hands up he's making car work all the
00:18:34time he's very adept at picking off punches with his gloves he has been allowing some of those right
00:18:40hands the body to land though and that could work for car over a long period of time but it's much
00:18:46easier to go forward than to go back with there jim if car continues to go back but he's going to get
00:18:51tired as the fight goes on nice combination by car
00:18:54and you see quite a right back on top of him again his plan is to just wear him down
00:19:14arte backing car up and slamming the left hook to the head
00:19:18and what started those combinations for forte was the fact that car tried to fight him he loves that
00:19:24when you try to fight him he comes right back and puts you in your place lets you know he's the boss
00:19:31again you see him using his strength on the inside and remembering to go to the body his
00:19:37corner asked for that between rounds but he hasn't been doing that much of it crowd loved
00:19:41the car combination but forte blocking two of the punches with his gloves
00:19:46he's got a shot yeah and it all started with those right hands to the body that changed the
00:20:13tempo of the bout just slightly early in that round i gave a slight edge to car in that round
00:20:18but he had to work so hard to earn that round he backed up through his combinations but again
00:20:24forte's strategy is to beat him up and wear him out when you get close to him
00:20:32just get down all right don't let him get a shot at you like that okay sometimes you stay right in
00:20:42front of him for too long as soon as you hear him you have to duck you have to do that a lot of times
00:20:48and don't forget don't grab your gun it's very important you know he's hitting below the belt a few
00:20:52time oba means king in some african dialect and here you see a royal royal combination three punches
00:21:02one did get cleanly through that one
00:21:13over car has gone 10 rounds or more 10 different times in his career a lot of experience in long bounce
00:21:21that's probably going to cost him a point
00:21:40ultimate gentleman mercanti no point deduction so far not up to this point apparently just a warning
00:21:47well that surprises me because it was a point a punch that really uh hurt uh forte and it could
00:21:53have an effect on the fight rises me too maybe a small break for car let's see if he's able to take
00:21:58advantage of it in some way all right harold letterman how did you have the first three rounds
00:22:05larry three to nothing 30 to 27 uh ike corte but i want to talk about that that uh stoppage there
00:22:11arthur mccanton made a crucial mistake he never stopped the clock he let i corte take a rest and
00:22:15killed one minute of the fourth round i didn't think it landed a minute almost a minute but i have it two
00:22:22rounds to one before i take
00:22:24and car was wobbled a little bit by that short left hook didn't look like much of a punch but the
00:22:38leg shook and now he takes a point away from corte for holding car behind the head
00:22:49so no deduction for car for the low blow but a point deducted from corte for holding car behind the head
00:22:55all of that here in round four shouldn't that require some kind of a warning as well absolutely i've
00:23:03very seldom seen a fight where a guy gets penalized the point the first time uh that he grabs the guy
00:23:10behind the head i remember when ali fought frazier the thriller in manila he must have held joe frazier
00:23:16behind the head 50 times and padilla just kept warning him but never took a point away here the first
00:23:21time an appointment is taken away that surprises me so it seems particularly unusual in light of the
00:23:26fact that car got two separate warnings for low blows they trade shots at close range that mouse under
00:23:33overcar's left eye is getting progressively larger with each passing round
00:23:41and corte is starting to open his hands up a little bit and accept more punishment in return
00:23:46for the chance to deal more out you're right jim he's starting to brawl he he doesn't want to just
00:23:51stand there and let car dictate what car wants to do he wants to impose his strength more let's see if he can
00:24:10do you want to do it i don't want you to cut your jab off okay and don't be rolling no right here keep boxing
00:24:28okay don't start the slugging okay now he started coming faster if you start doing moving your feet a little
00:24:35faster that's all you listen to me son don't start to grind with this guy like you started doing okay
00:24:45and shoulder rolling right hand and all that forget that okay keep boxing them over keep boxing like
00:24:50he's doing keep moving come on don't try to push this guy real relax there you see the left by corte
00:25:00now where was the hole i'm looking for the hold in here
00:25:08that's a that's an unbelievable penalty for for doing that a harmless nothing happened out of that
00:25:15gill actually car put his head underneath corte's uh arm
00:25:20good right hand by car
00:25:29round five of a bout in which oba car has been true to his word that he would be aggressive
00:25:35and he would try to get off first against ike corte that he would try to move away from the counters
00:25:40and avoid damage but despite all that harold letterman still sees corte winning the fight
00:25:46and carr has a mouse growing under his left eye and he's starting to fight with his mouth open
00:25:52which is a sign that he could be getting tired
00:25:54and he's starting to fight with his head and he's starting to fight with his head and he's starting to
00:26:05it's like a two-by-four coming out a window and hitting you right in the mouth
00:26:11it has to be disconcerting to a boxer like oba car to go in against a strong guy who could jab with
00:26:22him or maybe even better than he can but carr thought that he could out jab forte and from what
00:26:28i've seen in the fight so far forte is winning the battle of the jabs as well as winning the fight
00:26:33well if you landed jab for jab with forte it would still be unlikely you could match his power in that
00:26:39department again car caught forte with the right hand coming in didn't move him one bit that was
00:26:47defensive phillips experience and he just got hurt car did by a left jab on the nose
00:26:52uh pushing
00:26:57forte sticking to his business continuing to go forward against oba car he saw the right hand of the body
00:27:06car off and back on his heels now difficult to apply power to your punches when you're going
00:27:12backward the way oba car is forced to do
00:27:14what is looking for the big bomb now and he gets nailed with a good straight right hand hard right
00:27:23hand shot by car well done that combination was blocked again a low blow by car
00:27:44this is just a matter of physical strength skill that's exactly right and that's the way what they
00:28:00analyzed this fight before the fight is i'm going to out strengthen he said he's not strong
00:28:06hard right hand over the top by corte punctuates round five in case you've just joined us we're live
00:28:16in madison square gardens theater where you're watching a world welterweight championship fight
00:28:20between unbeaten champion ike corte and oba car still to come roy jones jr world super middleweight
00:28:26champion regarded by many as the best pound for pound fighter in the sport subject of a panel discussion
00:28:32at the beginning of our telecast where he answered questions about his choice of opponents and the
00:28:38ways in which he defends his unofficial honor as maybe the best fighter in the sport and now less
00:28:45than an hour later he'll be in the ring the battle against a tough opponent in bryant brannan replay larry
00:28:52as a car from detroit oba car is a big indianapolis racing fan but there you see the difficulty
00:29:03against a big strong guy who lands that big right hand of getting into the front row with the other
00:29:10three great welterweights in the world right now whitaker and and trinidad joining corte
00:29:22three five rounds punch stat numbers have corte landing almost half of his more than 200 jabs car
00:29:32has also thrown more than 200 jabs but his connect percentage is down at about 20 percent give car
00:29:38credit for courage he's still stepping in from time to time against the artillery of ghana's ike corte but
00:29:44corte's jab is becoming more effective in each round he's really starting to nail
00:29:50far with some good stiff oh he caught him flush with an uppercut there gill and
00:29:54over car who was hurt by that right hand at the end of round five slightly staggered by that uppercut
00:29:59as well just got nailed with a chopping right hand left hook by corte
00:30:07now we're starting to see the complete arsenal of ike corte there's a good solid left hook to the body
00:30:14who had the greatest jab you ever saw at the welterweight and middleweight divisions gill well
00:30:20i'm prejudiced uh i had emil griffith and he wasn't a tall guy but he out jabbed just about everybody he
00:30:27ever fought and he used to really bust them up with it similar to what corte is doing right at the moment
00:30:33corte opening up with both hands and he's got car in trouble right now oh car's fighting back though
00:30:41you know you can't get over you can't get over confident in there because you can always get
00:30:46nailed to yourself and corte that time walked in wide open yeah corte has a weakness and i would call
00:30:53it his arrogance in the ring he just doesn't believe anybody can hurt him that's correct and so far nobody
00:30:58has been able to hurt him he takes some good shots doesn't bother him a bit but if he lets a trinidad
00:31:04or a de la hoya have free reign to take a shot like that he might sing a different tune well the thing
00:31:09is the key with corte if anybody can ever make him back up for a round it would change things but he's
00:31:15the guy that's always on the offensive at all times here he comes right at you all the time
00:31:20right back on you you have to fight three minutes of every round when you're fighting like corte
00:31:36exhausting battle so far for both fighters a lot of action through
00:31:40close to six rounds corte looks much the pressure of the two as we come down the stretch
00:31:45in stance of number six and again he made he made part of a four punch combination none of which
00:31:50landed but it was tough work for over car and you can see his mouth wide open now car
00:32:00crowd oohing and eyeing with a lot of these right hands that corte has landed in the sixth
00:32:06it's been a big round for the star from ghana blood coming from over cars mouth
00:32:16exhaustion starting to show in his face
00:32:24and let's take a look at scores from today's major league baseball playoff games both in the american
00:32:30league 9 4 victory for the cleveland indians over the orioles game breaking grand slam home run there
00:32:36by albert bell and the yankee game in the top half of the ninth inning
00:32:42yankees have runners on first and third no outs as they go against the texas rangers
00:32:47and try to get even at two apiece rangers looking to take the edge in the series
00:32:53in the corner they told over car to try to win this round with the jab but we need this round bad
00:33:00you're going to take the round off we're winning with the jab okay round seven seconds out
00:33:06in the corner
00:33:18in the corner they told over car
00:33:22to try to win the next round with the jab in other words don't work so hard but i know when
00:33:28i train fighters i never ever told my guys to try to coast around to get a second win you have to
00:33:34be able to go the full distance in top shape all the time and from what i see of car gill
00:33:41he doesn't look like he has the temperament to do that he is a fighter he is not a pure boxer who
00:33:47is just going to stay away from you all right but in the meanwhile yes i see the exact same thing
00:33:53he's got guts he throws combinations but his corner is trying to take him away from his own style
00:33:59they're trying to tell him to jab for a round try to make it a light mount not a heavy round
00:34:04why isn't that a smart tactic given the fact that he just can't muscle up with court you can't do that
00:34:11with ike forte he's right in front of you all the time you can't disappear in there you have to be in
00:34:16front of the guy he's making car work here car is throwing some nice punches now and landing
00:34:22but in the meanwhile the guy's back for more and giving it to you all the time back
00:34:27give car all the credit in the world for bravery he is working to try to impose his will on forte
00:34:33and regain the initiative in the fight in a round right after a three-minute period in which
00:34:38quartet landed 48 of 74 punches against him most of them power shots
00:34:51are able to stay on his feet there
00:34:55again it goes to show you the courage that car had i mean he let it all hang out with that punch
00:34:59that he missed and fell down that's why he fell down with such a hard punch again i say that's why he's
00:35:05going to be dangerous you can't just get over confident and walk in and gill in addition to
00:35:10all of his other qualities forte has a heck of a chin guys pound him and he just looks at him i've
00:35:15never seen a better chin in my life i've seen him in other fights the same thing he gets hit a good
00:35:19solid shot he seems to be happy when he gets nailed because it wakes him up and he comes back and really
00:35:24punishes you some more then he hits a a little left hook inside and it backs car up five feet come back
00:35:32that's how strong he is jim very very strong it's like fighting the welterweight wall
00:35:37here's a nice combination by car but again this punches up like counterpuff punches when they land on
00:35:43i-4-8
00:35:51gar beginning to lose a bit of his balance and footwork here in the seventh round
00:35:55he's not wobbly because he's tired or wobbly because he's woozy tired jim he's tired
00:36:02maybe woozy too
00:36:24or taste cornerman can't understand why mercanty doesn't deduct any points from car for low blows
00:36:30so don't worry about a low blow okay drink some water bring as much water as possible okay you've
00:36:36got to keep up the pressure okay now i don't want you to stand in full standing position when you
00:36:42throw your punches okay it gives him a chance to punch back yeah this one watch if you yeah
00:36:49yeah i think you're a little in this round
00:36:57car keeps trying to come down the highway but he misses with that one and gets punished in return
00:37:03no bad deed will go unpunished
00:37:19seventh round was a bit of a breather for both fighters both of them throwing their lowest number
00:37:24of punches per round in the fight harold letterman how do you have it scored through seven jim 69 63
00:37:34six rounds corte one round car one round even i'll tell you the honest to guys truth ike is walking
00:37:39away with it and i'll tell you why a judge looks at effective aggressiveness and that's what this is
00:37:43all about ike corte is the aggressive the entire fight and as he comes forward he's extremely effective
00:37:48scoring constantly and around five when cause i started to swell uh ike what they found he could just
00:37:53drop that right hand lead on him all the time we're into the eighth
00:38:04typically spectacular performance so far by corte exceptionally brave performance
00:38:10resolute work by overcar doing the best he can and that's not that's pretty good jim but just not
00:38:17good enough when you're fighting an ike corte overcar showed me a lot of despite those nice combinations
00:38:22water a few borderline left hooks to the body but uh
00:38:29again corte just stays right in front of him makes them work every second of everyone here he comes
00:38:34again throwing bombs i mean these are bombs gil
00:38:41let's see what mercanty's gonna rule here was it a slip
00:38:51oh that was a solid right hand cross
00:38:54it's going to beat him up pretty good now jim yeah car is having trouble defending himself now
00:38:58this is the round this is the round this is the round that trinidad stopped car
00:39:04it's going to beat him up pretty good now it's going to beat him up pretty good again you see the
00:39:20courage that car has he's still in there he's still weaning punches trying but he's just in with a guy
00:39:25that it's too big too strong and too talented now this is a great show of bravery by car
00:39:30which is in itself yet another mark of the greatness of corte
00:39:44talking about a guy fighting his heart out that's what carl is doing right now
00:39:48he's really fighting his heart trying everything he can
00:39:53deserves all the credit in the world for his willingness to stand in against corte's howitzers
00:40:03again effective for car and again another low blow and finally mercanty
00:40:07is going to deduct a point
00:40:12i think carl is cleared for any rest now even if they take a point give me another rest to take another
00:40:17point
00:40:22well i think mercanty deducted a point i'm not sure i didn't guess you look around
00:40:25at all the judges but yes i get the confirmation and and i scored that a 10-7 round for corte because
00:40:33i thought he won the round by such a wide margin and landed so many heavy blows well i i could not
00:40:39disagree with that author i scored it at eight but uh but very well have been a 10-7 we got
00:40:44he gave it to us that point to put him he one he's one point ahead of us now son we got to come out
00:40:50the hole now
00:40:52you got to get out now baby come on come on come on
00:41:03all right use your job look move your head like this and let them hands go okay
00:41:08okay he's trying to stay close to you anytime he comes that close throw a hard one into his stomach
00:41:18okay it's very important that's going to weaken him okay get in there and let him let him know that
00:41:24whether you're the champ nobody but obakar knows just how much of himself that he's given in this effort
00:41:35corte relatively unmarked through eight rounds obakar's face showing the necessary damage
00:41:42there was bleeding from corte's mouth at the end of the last round and
00:41:51now i i noticed for the first time that the corte's was mouth open a little bit
00:41:55against me for gret so he's not as fresh as in daisy either
00:42:01again you can see how hard that over car is trying he's trying to stay into this fight doing the best he
00:42:07can and cars trainer stacy mckinley painting a little bit rosier picture of the proceedings than
00:42:15perhaps the objective observer would offer to car probably a good idea gill as he tries to keep his
00:42:20fighter motivated and mentally in the fight yes because uh again corte has been imposing
00:42:26his will the famous custom auto was saying he's been imposing his will on over car and i guess uh
00:42:32stacy is trying to get uh car a little confidence back you can again you can see car he's not holding
00:42:41anything back with these punches he's not afraid to get counted but he just just can't do it he's
00:42:47even with a guy that's too tough too strong yeah it is an amazing tribute to car because most fighters
00:42:54who have gone through this for this many rounds would in very subtle ways start to hold back their punches
00:43:02for fear of getting punched back absolutely and he's letting them go absolutely letting it all hang
00:43:07out again another low blow they've been by both fighters that time
00:43:17you know when uh corte leads with that right uppercut from the outside
00:43:21he's wide open for a left hook again another low blow by over car
00:43:25you know what's a not too bothered by low blows now well they told him not to yeah that's right
00:43:32they told him to ignore it takes instructions pretty well right ignore that right here at the chin
00:43:38gill it's about this time we should start talking about the fact that corte is so strong
00:43:46and the other top fighters in this division are so unlikely to give him a shot scene will he have to move up to
00:43:54junior middleweight and even middleweight and from your experience does he have the strength to do
00:44:00that absolutely he has the strength he's a very very strong fighter and and again it's strange the
00:44:07three guys felix felix trinidad uh preno whitaker and oscar de la hoya are not really physically strong
00:44:14fighters none of the three they all have skills but none of them are really physically strong the way
00:44:20corte is it's interesting both trinidad and de la hoya have great punching power but you're right
00:44:27not the kind of physical strength that could allow them to move corte around the ring the way he moves
00:44:32his opponents that's absolutely that's again why i say i would in my opinion i would make him
00:44:38favorite over any of the three
00:44:46and still to come junior middleweight championship fight there's the challenger bryant brannan
00:44:52interesting personal story of a young man who had a rocky road early in life wound up in new jersey's
00:44:57rawway state prison he says he got both religion and boxing while he's in prison he lives a clean
00:45:04dedicated life he's a terrific athlete he's got a great opportunity in front of him tonight
00:45:09as he meets roy jones jr the unbeaten 168 pound champ
00:45:18okay
00:45:18what should you tell a fighter in cars position at this stage of such a hard fight gill well it is
00:45:48his corner man is trying to get the best out of him about the best you can do now if you really
00:45:53be honest with the fighter they say hey there's a good right hand on the chin by car you're gonna
00:45:57have to be honest and say look it looks to me like you're gonna have to really win these last three
00:46:01rounds big
00:46:04nine rounds how do you see it harold harry eight rounds i caught a one round even i mean really i made
00:46:11a mistake before i didn't give over car around yet i think i caught a is just absolutely walking through him
00:46:16with that jab still i i keep scoring it for effective aggressiveness effective aggressiveness and clean
00:46:22punching and i just want to throw in one thing you guys are making matches like crazy i'd like to see
00:46:27i caught a and frankie randall i think that would be great again another low blow by over car
00:46:34i don't know what's going on here i've counted about five or six low blows
00:46:43so there's another point deduction and that increases yet again the chance that car would
00:46:49need a knockout to win the fight well that may be the way to get the knockout i i have this fight
00:46:56seven one and one with a three-point round before k larry i hate to say it but again i agree with you
00:47:05i have it seven one and one
00:47:09opa car with only one knockout in his career past the sixth round this is
00:47:14the 11th time in his career that he's been as far as 10 rounds in a fight
00:47:18only the fourth trip to the championship rounds for quartet who normally disposes of his opponents
00:47:24earlier than this
00:47:46watch the show
00:47:46one left to the body by quartet good right hand on the chin by car right on the button but nothing
00:47:58happened did bother quartz a nothing happened scary i mean the guy is totally scary some of the time
00:48:06you can see part of the predicament for car as his eyes close it's harder and harder to bend off
00:48:16for quartet's power shots he's trying so hard over kyle you have to give him this effort give him credit for a
00:48:22great effort
00:48:32he really is tired now harrell uh jim i think next round is going to be a tough round you called me
00:48:37harold yes well your fight x right that's why i called you harold thank you gill
00:48:45next round is going to be very very tough over car he's just about at the end of the rope right now well
00:48:50and his left eye is almost completely shut do you think his vision is impaired out of the left eye
00:48:54now gill well if your eyes close your vision's impaired makes all the sense in the world another
00:48:59hard right hand shot in close for car landed flush and quartet grins again
00:49:05i don't know if car earned that round but i'm going to give it to him anyway you're a nice guy
00:49:22i don't want you to leave okay you you wait too long to use your right raise up your jacks hit the
00:49:33chest and the chin you can't duck those okay don't give him any confidence
00:49:38you know what they're trying to get him arrested and that's not right okay listen over take it
00:49:47straight to him okay i'll fight two more rounds in the world champion but you've got to win these
00:49:53rounds big you want the time digging down deep car throws his right hand early in the round that
00:50:02landed just a little bit high to put any real hurt on corte but at the same time corte counted with a
00:50:13right hand to the body from what you see does corte have the kind of shocking power that trinidad has
00:50:21no not with one punch no trinidad is probably the best one punch guy in the welterweight division right
00:50:28now but but corte with the accumulation and the fact that he puts that pressure on you makes him a
00:50:35really the most dangerous guy in the division
00:50:43well again for the first time corte backs up and in car's corner that's what they told him to do
00:50:48he said go out and carry it to him let's see if he can do it what about the possibility gill that
00:50:55pernell whitaker's southpaw style would neutralize corte's jab and befuddle him
00:51:02you know pernell whitaker is a very very slick guy he's very very tough to hit but again corte really
00:51:09knows how to put that pressure on you and i think that his jab would would get through
00:51:13even with the perno whitaker because he would keep walking to whitaker regardless of what all the time
00:51:18right but again he is backing up uh but claw is backing him up for the first time in the fight
00:51:25and again we mentioned that's the only way that that you can really be effective against a night
00:51:29corte if you can back him up well this is how brave over car is despite the difficulty he finds himself in
00:51:35it is a knockdown it is a knockdown arthur mccanny ruling this a knockdown and corte can't believe it
00:51:48i didn't see a knockdown puncher i'd like to see a replay neither did i i think we will see a replay
00:51:54i thought he hit him in the back i think mccanny wasn't certain whether to call it a knockdown but the
00:51:59count had begun from the official timekeeper and author just decided to go with it
00:52:04that's the second time the timekeeper has started to count before he was signaled by the referee
00:52:10that it was a knockdown and carr unleashing some of his biggest shots of the fight he's having a big
00:52:1511th round now well exactly the opposite of the way i thought this round would be well carr is by far
00:52:22the more experienced fighter at going the distance we told you 11 times into the championship rounds now
00:52:27only four for corte so maybe carr is building up some steam here in the closing rounds against
00:52:34a possibly tiring ike corte well again we had mentioned early in the round it's the first time
00:52:40we saw corte back up
00:52:46corte still effectively slipping punches there as oba tried to unload something hard
00:52:53you're gonna get a look back at what was ruled a knockdown of corte here as soon as the round is over
00:53:09pause best round of the fight knockdown or no knockdown
00:53:13knockdown or slip what was it
00:53:28that ain't no knockdown no that was a foul blow besides not not being a knockdown it
00:53:33was a foul blow they should have hit her it was a right to the spine
00:53:41that was a very bad bad call by a great referee
00:53:48he stepped back he stepped on okay and you'll win this title okay
00:53:53oh you win this round big you win this fight
00:53:58this is the last one let it all hang out i want you to put some more power on your punches
00:54:04then put some more power on the way two breaks from arthur mccanty a point deducted
00:54:11for a mysterious reason from quarry early in the fight
00:54:15and now an official knockdown which he has to get credit for in the score
00:54:21on what was not a really a knockdown
00:54:27well mercanty's done 124 championship bouts he's entitled to have an off night i guess
00:54:32well you know uh we have to fight one-sided for corte but we do not know how the judges have it scored
00:54:39so this could be a big that knockdown could be a significant factor in this fight could well be
00:54:47they're often closer on the judges scorecards than we think they are
00:54:50that's not unusual at all
00:54:55and again remember another point was lost by the low blow so you don't know
00:54:59and the official knockdown ruled against corte in the last round
00:55:07marks the first time in his career that he has ruled to have been knocked down
00:55:12now of course corte and his people are going to say afterward wait a minute that was no knockdown
00:55:16but nevertheless it scored that way and it's a first a very sharp right hand corte landed
00:55:23on overcar's jaw and another right hand by corte and that for the moment slows the car rally
00:55:32a good left hook by forte again
00:55:36you know corte is very strong as we've been saying but i don't think he has real power
00:55:41no he's a good powerful punch of uh you know what sometimes it's the catchy
00:55:50you're right it might be difficult if possible to knock this car down for any
00:55:55for any welterweight even if he's hit by another car
00:56:02or in this case a 16-wheeler
00:56:04baseball now over for the evening stick with us for the conclusion of this one and the upcoming
00:56:13super middleweight championship bout for roy jones
00:56:16yankees came back to beat the rangers they take a two-to-one lead in that series
00:56:24final score in the game of your fight texas too go ahead put right in by corte
00:56:29car holding on now in the last minute of the fight it's been a grueling battle especially for car
00:56:37against the relentlessness of ike corte well to his credit to his credit the car he's still there
00:56:45and he's still firing but he's hanging on he's lost this round
00:56:51any chance i think that car had has gone away by losing this 12th round he's losing it pretty big
00:57:01too but again we're not the judges longest fight of mike corte's career he went 11 rounds to knock
00:57:10out chrisanto espania and win his welterweight championship now for the first time ever corte's
00:57:16been stretched to 12 rounds a brave effort by ovacar another strong dominant performance at least in
00:57:25our eyes by ike corte
00:57:46the official cheerleader in the ovacar camp is the man in the sunglasses in there yelling you
00:58:00said you were going to knock him out you said you were going to knock him out so if they take their
00:58:04satisfaction from that then they may walk away with a measure of vindication harold letterman how'd you
00:58:11score it jim nine two one even one sixteen one oh nine ike corte i want to tell you what a game
00:58:20gutty performance by ovacar in rounds 10 and 11. this was a thoroughly beaten fighter who came back like
00:58:26gangbusters and gave us a great fight those last three rounds i mean super for every hero super i never
00:58:32thought he was going to survive let alone give us a performance like that runs 10 and 11. and if i was
00:58:36managing like forte right now i'd be worried i'd be on pins and needles waiting for the officials to
00:58:43make it forte the winner because no question strange things can happen yeah he's from ghana the other guy
00:58:50is an american fighter you have to worry about that in a situation like this harold question about your
00:58:55scorecard you didn't think that little slip in the 11th was a real knockdown let me tell you something
00:58:59the judges don't look at replays so you get a knockdown like that you don't you hardly see the punch
00:59:06if the referee calls it a knockdown you have to go with the referee the judges don't have a monitor
00:59:12boy i wish i had a monitor every fight i judged i wish i had you yelling hey it was uh it was a slip
00:59:17you know i wish you had punched that exactly i mean you just don't have it so you're right
00:59:22harold the referee calls it a knockdown you have to score exactly
00:59:29in the background there you see floyd patterson chairman of the new york state athletic commission
00:59:34and of course former two-time heavyweight champion of the world and let's go up to michael buffer
00:59:39for the official decision
00:59:47ladies and gentlemen we go to the scorecards
00:59:51gonzalo rivera scores about 112 to 112 he has it even
00:59:56lewis rivera scores about 116 to 109 and jose lorino scores it 117 to 107 for the winner by majority
01:00:08decision and still the undefeated
01:00:15wilberweight champion of the world
01:00:18ike bazooka
01:00:21fascinating scoring from one judge who saw obakar winning four of the first
01:00:34seven rounds against ike forte the other two judges scorecards more in line with those of our harold
01:00:40letterman total punches as you see
01:00:43forte landing 139 more blows than carr throwing 29 more and landing at a higher percentage rate 50
01:00:53that's blistering punching by ike corte
01:00:57jabs and you can see that corte was also dominant there they threw about the same number
01:01:03but corte landed 82 more than did obakar and each one of those 82 jabs hurt
01:01:11let's go to larry merchant with the champion ike corte
01:01:14all right congratulations ike first on the knockdown officially the first knockdown of your career
01:01:22what happened in your opinion well first of all i want to thank god for making me this victory
01:01:27but i don't think the knockdown is a knockdown you know because he hit my back he hit you in the back
01:01:36as you saw and that's what our replay showed how tough was he because despite how hard you were
01:01:43continually hitting him he kept coming at you well i was trying to work him out i was trying to wear
01:01:47him out but he was moving you know and the ref came up uh you know he came and split from me because
01:01:52he was eating below and everybody didn't want him if you can't get a fight with any of the other top
01:01:58welterweights like pernell whitaker or felix trinidad have you considered moving up to junior middleweight
01:02:07or middleweight well we are we still working we're having planned to go to our water we were planned to
01:02:13fight with the what the what i would uh train out or whatever you know but if they won't fight you
01:02:19will you fight middleweights yeah who goes for that but the noise i'll fight the containers you know
01:02:25so you will can fight if you'll fight anybody out there if we can do any kind of fight the containers
01:02:33thank you very very much great fight thank you i like i like all my people you know in ghana
01:02:38like time you know organist for coming here to support me you know my fans in ghana i thank them all
01:02:44and jim you can hear some of his countrymen who live here in new york city chanting in the background
01:02:50back to you all right thank you very much larry and gill let's take a look at the final scorecards
01:02:55here for a moment moment so we can underline this one scoring discrepancy that i think made the ultimate
01:03:01majority decision interesting you see there rivera puerto rico and larino of uruguay both scoring
01:03:07for quartet by significant margins but the judge from venezuela again had obakar winning four of the
01:03:14first seven rounds and wound up scoring the fight even obviously he likes bravery it has to be something
01:03:21like that if he was watching the same fight i was watching there's no way he could give over car
01:03:26those early rounds you said at the beginning of the evening that you would make ike corte the favorite
01:03:31against pernell whitaker or felix trinidad or oscar de la hoya any of the other three glamour
01:03:36welterweights or near welterweights in the world you still stick to that absolutely again he has
01:03:41that physical strength not strangely enough none of the three guys is on top they all have a lot of
01:03:47skill but none of them are really physically strong all right let's turn our attention now to
01:03:51the second main event of the evening if you've been with us all night long you know
