Deadly Fog on Yamuna Expressway: 10 Vehicles Crash, Buses Catch Fire, 4 Killed in Mathura

Mathura (Uttar Pradesh): Dense fog triggered a major multi-vehicle collision on the Yamuna Expressway near Milestone 127 in the Baldev area of Mathura around 4:30 am on December 16, 2025. The accident involved seven buses and three cars, with several vehicles catching fire, leading to four deaths and injuries to 25 others.

According to officials, the chain collision began when three cars crashed due to near-zero visibility. Moments later, seven buses — including one Uttar Pradesh State Roadways bus and six private sleeper buses — rammed into them. The impact caused vehicles to burst into flames, creating panic among passengers who were asleep at the time.

Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly, engulfing multiple vehicles and triggering chaos on the expressway. Eleven fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and emergency teams carried out swift rescue operations. The blaze was brought under control after sustained efforts.

Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar confirmed that poor visibility due to dense fog was the primary cause of the accident. He said four people — three bus passengers and one car occupant — died on the spot, while 25 injured persons were admitted to nearby hospitals. None of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. He announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased.

Authorities have advised motorists to exercise extreme caution while travelling on highways amid worsening winter fog conditions in Uttar Pradesh. The incident follows a similar fog-related pile-up on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway in Nuh a day earlier, highlighting the increasing risks posed by low visibility during winter nights and early mornings.
