00:00These young minds were making the most of their Saturday by partaking in chess but
00:04it was more intense as they were competing at a tournament. This as the
00:08Tunapuna Hindu Primary School was the venue for the Jumbo Chess Primary
00:12Schools Team Chess Championship at which coach Adrian Winter-Atwell was present.
00:16The Jumbo Chess is an organization that go to primary and secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:22We go to different schools just promoting chess, teaching chess to children and
00:27preparing coaches to go out there and promote the Royal game and one of the
00:35things that we do is to create tournament to bring all these players into the one roof.
00:40It was a seven-round tournament with the school being allowed to send any number
00:44of teams however each team had to comprise four players. Atwell Winter also saw the
00:50need to promote chess in Trinidad and Tobago. Chess is very good to get children
00:54away from many things that are wrong okay so first of all it teaches them
01:00critical thinking so the children will be able to think ahead and measure what
01:04could be the consequences of every one of the actions so this is one of the
01:08things that is good about chess okay and of course it takes them away from crime
01:13because they could see an opportunity to build friendships and good
01:17relationship with children from other schools. Also involved in this initiative
01:22was coach Ryan Harper who like Atwell Winter represented TNT at
01:27international level. According to Harper it was necessary to have such a
01:31tournament to set a foundation for youngsters who want to go on to bigger
01:35things. Tournaments are important because it gives them that camaraderie that
01:39chance to challenge each other and get more involved in the game and get a better
01:44liking to the game. At the same time they also have to learn to lose because they can't win all the games.
01:49Harper was delighted with a turnout at the tournament but said there were some
01:55challenges with starting on time. Regarding the talent in the Twin Island
01:59nation the coach gave it a thumbs up. There is a lot of talent because there is a
02:04lot of chess coaching happening in the country I mean I'm a coach right there are a
02:08lot of coaches that are here there's chess in a lot of schools around the country and
02:12still there are still a number of schools that don't have chess you know and I mean we offer
02:16programs to teach chess in schools so I'm hoping that maybe some more schools might
02:20might try to have chess in their school. Schools interested in learning about the
02:25sport or forming a chess club can also search Jumbo Chess on Facebook and
02:30Instagram for more details. Vinod Nawani, Chiefs of Sport.
02:36Go to the school. Go to the school. Go to the school. Be sure you don't think we need to
02:40develop a chess club for the team. It's a good idea. It's a good idea. That's what we
02:42want to learn to play. We want to live in the game, but we want to say we want to
02:48again. So we've been talking about the transition. The playbook for the team.
