He may be part of the TTFA's plan next season…however the little magician had other business on the agenda.
As The inaugural Russell Latapy Education and Sport Foundation Charity Golf Tournament teed off on Saturday in Trincity.
The Little Magician himself was on hand to give the event his full endorsement, as proceeds will go directly toward youth education and sporting initiatives.
00:00Former national athletes Russell Latopy and Brian Lara were having fun on the greens in Trin City.
00:06This as the inaugural Russell Latopy Education and Sport Foundation charity golf tournament took place on Saturday at Millennium Lakes and Country Club.
00:15Foundation is really to provide opportunities for my school and the privileged kids, for charities that I support, that my family support, and a lot of golfers here support.
00:28The Russell Latopy Secondary School is an institution named after the man whose sobriquet is the little magician following his exploits on the football pitch in his heyday.
00:37So how's the relationship between the two?
00:40I have a really good relation with the school over the years. We have done a few things for the school.
00:48I think when you give charity, it's not really to talk about it. I think it's about providing opportunities when we can and that is what we try to do.
00:57Also at the event was Richard Lara, brother of the man who captained the West Indies many years ago.
01:03The older Lara was the golf tournament's coordinator and spoke of the interest shown by many teams, with some having to be turned away because of the response.
01:12This tournament has been very well subscribed. We have had 38 teams participating. That is not normally in these events. We have like probably between 20 and 38 teams. But I guess because it's Russell Latopy, we have 38 teams to the event. So it's very well subscribed.
01:33Having to reject some teams because of the turnout made it somewhat bittersweet. Having said that, Latopy found it quite encouraging since it was the first of its kind.
01:43Yeah, I'm very happy about it. It's our inaugural golf tournament. It's our first effort and we're happy with the turnout that we had. I'm speaking to a lot of the golfers today. Everybody seemed as though they had a good day and that is really important to us.
02:02What we really want to do is we want people to have fun, firstly, and we want to be able to contribute to our worthy cause, which is what this whole effort is about.
02:11Latopy was also grateful that many sponsors came on board, hoping it can also happen in 2026.
