02:15Sakaguchi and Kitagawa then attended a banquet for the laureates with about a thousand and three hundred people in attendance
02:24including members of the Swedish royal family
02:28we are now joined by NHK world's Saito Megumi in Stockholm so Megumi how are things over there
02:37I'm standing near Stockholm City Hall which hosted the banquet last night obviously it's a lot quieter now but yesterday it
02:48felt like the whole city was in a festive mood the hour ceremony and banquet always get a lot of media attention and this year was no different
02:58yes especially from here in Japan two of the country's scientists won the awards so speaking of those two Sakaguchi and Kitagawa how did they get on during that ceremony
03:11they both looked a little nervous at first but they had smiles on their faces as they received their medals after the ceremony they were surrounded by well-wishers and they both looked relaxed while they chatted with people it was clear that the pressure was off
03:32at the banquet at the banquet to sing in good spirits as the menu was cast including members of the Swedish royal family and other laureates
03:42this was the first time in 10 years that Japan's scientific community has received two Nobel prizes but it seems there are concerns about whether Japan will continue to produce such pioneering research in the future
03:59yes both Sakaguchi and Kitagawa have highlighted the importance of support particularly in the field of fundamental research it takes a long time to produce results so they say they need long-term support and environment where researchers can focus on their work
04:20Japanese scientists hope that Sakaguchi and Kitagawa's Nobel wins will raise awareness about the need for better research environments
04:29hmm Megumi I hear you've been spending a lot of time with Kitagawa since he won the award a couple of months ago what's your impression of him as a person
04:39what really struck me was his attitude toward research Kitagawa always seemed to be enjoying his work
04:49when he spoke in front of Japanese students at a school in Stockholm they asked him what he likes most about it he answered with a smile and say he finds it's most rewarding when he achieved something no one else has done before
05:06I think that kind of attitude is what has kept him at the forefront of research and it's great to see how he shared this spirit of discovery with children
05:17yes hopefully he will keep on inspiring young minds NHK World's Saito Megumi in Stockholm thank you
05:24across the border in Norway the winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize has made a belated appearance
05:34Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado emerged from hiding for the occasion
05:40Machado greeted supporters early Thursday morning from a hotel balcony in Oslo however she had arrived too late to accept her award in person Machado's daughter attended the ceremony instead and spoke on her mother's behalf
06:03it reminds the world that democracy is essential to peace and more than anything what we Venezuelans can offer the world is the lesson forged through this long and difficult journey that to have democracy we must be willing to fight for freedom
06:30the speech was written by Machado in it she accuses President Nicolas Maduro's administration of crimes against humanity she says the Venezuelan government is using state terrorism to bury the will of the people
06:47the UN's human rights office says authorities in Venezuela have detained more than two thousand four hundred people since last year's disputed presidential election and the opposition says that includes over a hundred and fifty children people around the city gathered to watch the ceremony
07:08it was fantastic and unity and diversity and I have really lived this and the way they did it you know by unite Venezuela and abroad inside the country and it was just amazing
07:23now let's go to try to look outside in our Bangkok studio for stories making headlines across the Asia Pacific

10:22remain missing the United Nations development program or UNDP reported on Tuesday the affected area covers over 1.1 million hectares accounting for around 20% of Sri Lankan land
10:37the UNDP also says over 50% of the people in the flooded area were already struggling with unstable incomes and high debt leading to concerns that the disaster will exacerbate their
10:51situation our goal is not just to recover we want to make sure we build the resilience while we do that so the communities can withstand further stocks and thrive
11:06Kubota Asusa the UNDP representative in Sri Lanka called on the international community to cooperate to provide continued support
11:17millions millions of tons of plastic waste are contaminating the environment across the globe Thailand ranks among the world's top 10 plastic polluters as waste flows down Bangkok's canals into the ocean
11:30NHK world's Nakata Yoshiko reports on how people in communities along the waterways are trying to change that
11:38Bangkok's extensive network of canals stretches to the child prior river it is known as the Venice of the East and has served for centuries as the city's arteries for transportation trade and local life

12:11in the waterways are here into the ocean
12:18Samini and Boonloo leads a nonprofit organizations team to intercept trash at its upstream sources
12:26they deploy trash traps which consist of two outstretched poles with nets
12:34NPO members empty the traps five times a week they find plastic bottles food containers and even bags of dirty diapers
12:45Sam Nien has lived along the canal his whole life
12:50he believes the problem stems from poor waste management as well as people's mindset
12:57the trash is mostly daily items used by residents around here it all goes into the canal
13:09the NPO's activities are inspiring residents to change their habits
13:16I didn't know where else to throw trash besides the canal
13:19we now constantly remind our community members not to throw garbage into the canal
13:26researchers are working with the NPO to make its activities more effective
13:31they are conducting a field trial to analyze the trash using artificial intelligence
13:38five key items including plastic bags and bottles account for a large part of the waste
13:45scientists have set up devices to monitor and collect real-time data to visualize the flow
13:54plastic bottle
13:57it's one of the tool that can create data to raise awareness to create social impact
14:09on this day children from a local elementary school have joined Sam Nien's team
14:15the NPO encourages people to view the waste issue as their own
14:21I didn't expect to see so much trash it's more than I thought
14:25I'm worried the fish will die in the dirty water
14:28I feel good cleaning trash
14:30we're just a small organization working like this in a small community in Thailand
14:40and it's a struggle
14:42so I want to see this kind of work expand to every other canal
14:47that would make the situation much better
14:49Sam Nien believes that big changes can start small from his team's efforts

18:17The U.S. Federal Reserve has lowered interest rates for the third time this year.
18:42Yuko Fukushima joins us to give us the background to the decisions.
18:46Yuko, the Fed is juggling two competing problems at the moment.
18:50That's right, Ryuichi. The Fed has a dual mandate.
18:54The first goal is to achieve maximum employment.
18:56The second is to ensure stable prices.
18:59The problem for the Fed is that the U.S. labor market is weakening.
19:03That usually calls for lowering the rate to stimulate borrowing and spending, which creates jobs.
19:09But the U.S. is also dealing with elevated inflation that typically calls for the opposite.
19:14A higher rate cools the economy and curbs prices.
19:18Today, it was a jobs market that took precedence.
19:22Policymakers cut the rate by a quarter of a percentage point, putting it in the range of 3.5 to 3.75 percent.
19:29That's three consecutive cuts by the central bank.
19:32Risks to inflation are tilted to the upside and risks to employment to the downside, a challenging situation.
19:41There is no risk-free path for policy as we navigate this tension between our employment and inflation goals.
19:48Powell said it's unclear how President Donald Trump's immigration and tariff policies will impact the economy in the long term.
19:58He blamed tariffs for the recent pickup in prices, but indicated it was likely a one-time increase.
20:04The recent government shutdown delayed the release of key jobs data.
20:08When the September figures finally dropped, they showed the jobless rate had ticked up.
20:14Trump has been hounding the Fed all year to cut rates, and that's exactly what he got here, but he still wasn't happy.
20:22The head of the Federal Reserve is a stiff, and, you know, you fight that.
20:31It's amazing.
20:32We fight that, and yet interest rates are going down, except with him, not too much.
20:39He did a rather, I would say, rather small number that could have been doubled, at least doubled.
20:47The Trump administration is currently looking at candidates to take over from Powell when his term ends in May.
20:54So we could see a change in policy direction after that.
20:58Well, earlier I talked with economist Suzuki Toshiyuki.
21:01He says America's labor situation is worse than the Fed is letting on.
21:04He says the private sector ADP labor report combined with the government's non-farm payrolls report paint a troubling picture.
21:13I think that the employment situation in the United States is very dismal now.
21:22We had a number ADP employment report said that the year-on-year growth of employment is only 0.6% or so.
21:35Considering the poor number of ADP, coming NFP numbers are also weak.
21:42And so my estimation is this will be negative compared to the previous month.
21:48So if we have such a number, it's a disaster.
21:53The Fed has suggested there will only be one cut next year by a quarter of a percentage point.
21:59But Suzuki says there is a good chance we'll see more.
22:02The Trump administration has a immigration policy, simply deportation or something.
22:12A number of immigrants are decreasing and some workers are going out from the United States.
22:21If we see such a decline of employment numbers, demand for consumption will be decreasing.
22:28And this decrease will provoke another increase of unemployment and unemployment rate.
22:37If it happens, the Federal Reserve will move to a so aggressive rate cut.
22:43Suzuki says a change in the Fed chair is another factor supporting the case for multiple cuts.
22:48President Trump requires low rates, very, very strongly.
22:58And probably the coming chair will cut rates.
23:02I call it the honeymoon cuts.
23:04So this cut should not be included in today's FOMC's forecast.
23:12And there's one more thing to consider.
23:17Suzuki says if the AI bubble bursts, it could have disastrous repercussions for the U.S. economy.
23:23In that case, the Fed would likely move quickly and aggressively to slash rates.
23:29And now to the markets.
23:30Well, in Tokyo, the Nikkei did nine-tenths of a percent.
23:33That was largely a knock-on effect of the Fed's rate cut,
23:36which boosted the yen against the dollar and prompted traders to sell exporters.
23:40And to the rest of the region, there was a mixed reaction to the Fed's decision.
23:45Traders anticipated a rate cut,
23:47but they expected the comments by the Fed chair to be more hawkish than they were.
23:52The Kospi in South Korea slipped almost six-tenths of a percent.
23:55The supporting earnings by a U.S. cloud computing giant weighed on tech stocks there.
24:01In Indonesia, the Jakarta composite touched a moderate high during the session,
24:05but ended down as profit taking kicked in.
24:10And that's the news for this Thursday.
24:12Now, let's check out the world weather.
24:25Prolonged rain has caused disruptions in the U.S. northwest.
24:30Our meteorologist Yumi Hirano has the details.
24:35Moisture flow from the Pacific has produced downpours in the northwest.
24:39Washington state is experiencing severe flooding.
24:45Waves of heavy rain brought historic flooding to the state of Washington this week,
24:51prompting an emergency declaration.
24:54Some river monitoring stations already reached their highest levels on record.
24:59By Wednesday, more than 380 millimeters of rain had fallen in part of the state.
25:05The governor said 300 National Guard members would be ready to respond to requests for help by Thursday.
25:14A cold front is expected to intensify the downpours on Thursday.
25:19More rain could lead to additional flooding.
25:22Further east, another system is bringing winter weather to the Great Lakes region and the northeast.
25:28Heavy snow and blizzard conditions are likely.
25:31Snow is also expected in New York and Toronto.
25:35Seattle will see another day of wet weather.
25:38But sunny skies are expected in L.A. with a high of 29.
25:43Moving to Japan.
25:45A cold front is bringing intense downpours and lightning to the Sea of Japan side on Thursday.
25:51Behind the system, strong cold air is coming in.
25:54So heavy snow and blizzard conditions are likely in northern Japan.
26:00Up to 50 centimeters in Hokkaido and up to 70 centimeters in Tohoku is possible by Friday evening.
26:07Tokyo will stay on the sunny side, but the high will drop to only 10.
26:12Cold air is also affecting other parts of northeast Asia.
26:17So Beijing will see heavy snow of up to 5 centimeters.
26:20The temperature in Lambertal will be only minus 17.
26:25That's it for now.
26:26Stay warm.
26:26Sky of the city will last night.
26:27Ku Kluxi Tan.
26:27They'll be back in the ground.
