00:00Welcome to Newsroom Tokyo. I'm Yamasawa Rina.
00:15And I'm Raja Prada.
00:16Here are the headlines.
00:18At a tense meeting in Beijing, senior Japanese and Chinese diplomats try to resolve an escalating row between their countries.
00:26Japan's Princess Aiko pays a courtesy call to the president of Laos during her first official overseas trip.
00:34And we follow an 800-kilometer bicycle journey that's been retracing the historical paths of friendship between Japan and South Korea.
00:45We start in Beijing, where senior Japanese and Chinese diplomats are trying to smooth over a row between the two countries.
00:53The meeting comes after comments Prime Minister Takai Sanae made about Taiwan earlier this month.
01:00Kanai Masaaki is the head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau.
01:06He sat down Tuesday with Liu Jingsong, director general of the Department of Asian Affairs, and other officials from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
01:14Kanai and Liu were later seen leaving the foreign ministry together.
01:19They continued talking until the Japanese diplomat got into a car without taking any questions.
01:25Kanai's visit comes in the middle of a diplomatic brawl following remarks made by Japan's Prime Minister.
01:31Takaichi told lawmakers a military emergency involving Taiwan could be considered something that might threaten Japan's survival, drawing a sharp response from Beijing.
01:43Asked by reporters about the outcome of the talks, Liu said he was certainly not satisfied and described the atmosphere of the meeting as tense.
01:51At a news conference on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning repeated Beijing's firm opposition to what she described as the Prime Minister's wrongful remarks.
02:02She said the Chinese side called on Japan to withdraw the comments.
02:06Speaking after Tuesday's meeting, Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu said Japan has been explaining to China what Takaichi meant.
02:15And he said Beijing's moves to discourage exchanges between the people of the two countries go against their shared understanding to build a mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests.
02:28Bear sightings continue in northeastern Japan's Iwate Prefecture.
02:34Two bears in a residential area prompted police to dispatch a rifle unit for the first time in the prefecture.
02:41Local police on patrol spotted the bears at the foot of a specimen tree in Iwaizumi town around 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday.
02:52Bears were seen climbing the same tree the previous day.
02:56The town has no system to authorize the emergency use of hunting rifles, so it requested assistance from the special police unit.
03:05The rifle team members instructed residents to evacuate and began preparations.
03:12But they determined they could not safely shoot at the bears because the location had no suitable backstop for stray rounds.
03:22The team ended its operations in the early evening and the bears were later driven away around 5.30 p.m.
03:30In Morioka City, a bear was tranquilized and captured after it climbed up to the rooftop parking lot of a home improvement store.
03:41No injuries were reported.
03:43The United Nations Security Council has adopted a U.S.-backed resolution to implement a Gaza ceasefire plan.
03:53The resolution authorizes the deployment of a temporary international stabilization force, as stated in the proposal laid out by U.S. President Donald Trump.
04:02It was adopted with 13 countries in favor.
04:06Russia and China abstained from the vote.
04:09Washington's U.N. ambassador thanked those who voted yes, saying they're charting a new course in the Middle East.
04:17Today's resolution represents another significant step towards a stable Gaza that will be able to prosper and an environment that will allow Israel to live in security.
04:32The resolution also welcomed the establishment of a transitional administration called the Board of Peace.
04:38This will oversee the international force as it works to secure the area and support the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip.
04:46The resolution also mentions possible Palestinian statehood once the Palestinian Authority carries out reforms.
04:53Details such as which countries will participate and what tasks they'll undertake have not yet been decided.
05:00The British government has proposed major reforms to tighten the country's asylum policy.
05:09This comes amid mounting public frustration over the increasing number of people seeking refugee status in the U.K.
05:18Over 100,000 people now live in asylum accommodation.
05:22And over half of refugees remain on benefits eight years after they have arrived.
05:28To the British public who foot the bill, the system feels out of control and unfair.
05:35Approximately 111,000 people had applied for asylum in the 12 months through June.
05:42Asylum seekers are currently allowed to stay in the U.K. for five years once they gain refugee status.
05:50At the end of that period, they can apply for the right to settle permanently.
05:56Under the stricter proposals, refugees would be allowed to remain for only 30 months, but could get an extension if they are still considered in need of protection.
06:08At the same time, the period to qualify for indefinite settled status would be extended to 20 years.
06:17Protests broke out over the summer after an asylum seeker staying at a hotel near London was accused of sexually assaulting a girl.
06:27Meanwhile, support has been increasing for the right-wing Reform UK Party, which calls for the stricter measures for immigrants and refugees.
06:37It now leads the ruling Labour Party in approval ratings.
06:43Experts say the administration of Prime Minister Kiya Starmer sees immigration reform as key to regaining voter support.
07:01Financial markets in Tokyo were hit by a triple whammy today.
07:06For the details, we bring in Yanaka Marie from our business team.
07:10So, Maria, there were big sell-offs of Japan's currency, stocks and bonds.
07:14Fill us in on what happened.
07:16Well, the yen and government bonds both fell on the same domestic concerns.
07:21Stocks were also hit by some global factors.
07:26Let's start with the yen.
07:28The currency slid on worries about the nation's fiscal health.
07:32Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae is preparing to unveil an economic stimulus package as early as this week.
07:40Many traders expected to contain big spending plans, which means more debt.
07:46That sent the yen into a tailspin.
07:48Against the euro, it fell to its weakest level since the single currency debuted in 1999.
07:56In New York overnight, the euro briefly rose to the 180-yen level for the first time ever.
08:03Adding to pressure on the yen was the view that the central bank likely won't raise interest rates at its upcoming policy meeting in December.
08:13The yen also fell against the dollar in New York on Monday.
08:17At one point, the greenback rose as high as the lower 155-yen level.
08:23The news was not much better for Japanese stocks.
08:27The Nikkei fell sharply on Tuesday, going below the key 50,000 mark for the first time in three weeks.
08:34Investors sold off AI and chip-related shares following a check-led decline on Wall Street.
08:42The Tokyo benchmark ended the day at 48,702, down more than 3 percent from Monday's close.
08:49The fall tracked a broader sell-off in New York.
08:52Investors dialed back expectations for the Federal Reserve to cut rates next month.
08:59Worsening tensions between Japan and China also weighed on stocks in Tokyo.
09:05Investors also unloaded Japanese government bonds on worries about how the country is going to manage its huge debt.
09:13When bond prices fall, their yields go up.
09:16The yield on the benchmark 10-year government bond rose briefly on Tuesday to 1.75 percent.
09:23That's the highest since 2008.
09:27Analysts say investors are keen to get a sense of the scale of Takaichi's economic measures and how she plans to fund them.
09:35With markets fretting about the package, the finance minister stepped in to offer her reassurance.
09:41Our position is not of reckless spending, but proactive fiscal policy in a responsible way.
09:51We'll ensure the size and quality of the package allow us to show that confidence in the yen and bonds will not be undermined and stability can be maintained.
10:03Katayama emphasized that the government will be keeping a close eye on financial markets as it prepares its policy measures.
10:12With so much happening in the markets, Prime Minister Takaichi met with Bank of Japan Governor Ueda Kazuo on Tuesday for about 30 minutes.
10:22They exchanged views on the economy, prices and foreign exchange rates.
10:26This was Takaichi's first one-on-one meeting with Ueda since she took office last month.
10:34Ueda explained that the BOJ is adjusting its monetary easing toward the goal of achieving sustainable 2 percent inflation.
10:42Following the meeting, he told reporters that the Prime Minister had made no specific requests regarding the BOJ's monetary policy.
10:49Now a look at what's happening elsewhere in Asia.
10:54GDP figures for most of Southeast Asia's economies are out for the July to September quarter, and some of them show impressive growth.
11:04One factor was that exporters front-loaded shipments to the United States before tariffs came into effect from August.
11:11Vietnam logged growth of 8.2 percent in real terms from the same period last year.
11:19Malaysia was up 5.2 percent.
11:23The expansion in both countries was faster than in the previous quarter.
11:27On the other hand, two countries with political unrest failed to step up the pace as personal consumption lagged.
11:34In Indonesia, people took to the streets to protest the government's economic measures.
11:40GDP expanded 5 percent during the quarter.
11:44In Thailand, a former prime minister was dismissed over the handling of a border dispute with Cambodia.
11:51GDP grew just 1.2 percent.
11:55As for the future, some analysts have a dim outlook for the region.
11:58They believe the impact of the U.S. tariffs could be felt later this year and into 2026.
12:07Let's finish with a check on markets around Asia.
12:11It was a sea of red as investors followed the decline on Wall Street.
12:15Tech shares in New York were sold off ahead of a pivotal earnings report from Nvidia.
12:20The falls in Asia were led by the semiconductor-heavy benchmarks.
12:24The Kospi in Seoul tumbled 3.3 percent, dropping below the 4,000 threshold.
12:32Chip maker SK Hynix nosedived nearly 6 percent.
12:36Taiwan's index plunged 2.5 percent.
12:40Semiconductor-related firms were front and center.
12:43Both TSMC and Honhai, also known as Voxcom, racked up significant declines.
12:48And that's the biz for this Tuesday.
12:50It's been 60 years now since Japan and South Korea normalized diplomatic relations.
13:08Recently, cyclists from both countries set off on a long-distance road trip to revisit an earlier era of friendship when diplomatic missions known as Choson Tonsinsa traveled from present-day Seoul to Tokyo.
13:33NHK World's Hirata Miyu reports.
13:37In late October, 30 cyclists from Japan and South Korea are given a loud send-off as they depart from Hangan Park in central Seoul.
13:46Over the next 16 days, they will paddle from here to Tokyo, following some of the route taken by the Choson Tonsinsa.
13:57The 800-kilometer ride has deep historical significance, but organizers stress that they are looking to the future.
14:06South Korea-Japan relations have always had ups and downs, but our nations are like two wheels working together, the same as a bicycle moving forward.
14:17That's the spirit in which we created this cooperation program.
14:20The Choson Tonsinsa were 12 diplomatic missions sent from Korea to Japan between the 17th and 19th centuries.
14:32They helped restore relations between the countries, which had been badly damaged by Japan's invasions of Korea in the late 16th century.
14:41Roughly 500 invoids traveled each time, on a journey lasting more than half a year.
14:48They visited major Japanese cities, introducing Korean arts and academic knowledge.
14:55After a week on the road, the group arrived in Osaka.
14:59They visited a temple that frequently provided lodgings for the Choson Tonsinsa.
15:06Japanese cooks were surprised to see the Korean envoys roasting whole sheep or preparing chicken dishes.
15:16It was a true culinary exchange.
15:18Among the group is 41-year-old Mori Miki from Fukuoka Prefecture in southwestern Japan.
15:29She is a former professional track cyclist who now volunteers as a Korean guide at a museum.
15:36Mori first became interested in South Korea when she accompanied her son on a trip to Seoul in 2019.
15:44At the time, anti-Japan sentiment had led to a boycott of Japanese goods in the country.
15:51But the people she met there left such a warm impression, she was inspired to start learning the language.
15:59I was nervous at first, but everyone was so kind.
16:05I realized that the South Korea I saw in the news and the country I experienced myself were completely different.
16:11Now, Mori is getting a chance to repay that hospitality.
16:18At lunch, she and her new Korean friends have their own culinary exchange.
16:23Korean cyclist Cho Min-suk says spending time together has made him aware of some cultural differences.
16:39Even if we can't have in-depth conversations, there's a strong sense that we're all in this together on our way to Tokyo.
16:57I think we've built a really good relationship.
17:11After lunch, the group catches Osaka's Tennoji Waso Festival, which recreates ancient exchanges between the two countries.
17:26They also explore the city's Koreatown.
17:30It's home to a Korean community with deep roots and known as a hub for K-pop culture.
17:42Then, it's time to head to their next destination.
17:45Over two weeks after leaving Seoul, the riders are now making their way to the finish line right here in Tokyo.
18:04As they arrive in the Japanese capital, spirits are high.
18:18This kind of project is really important.
18:24Over these 17 days, I realized that even if relations between countries can feel too big for us to influence,
18:31on an individual level, we can truly connect and build real friendships.
18:35This experience has helped us reflect on how to build the next 60 years,
18:44and even the next 400 years, of South Korea-Japan relations.
18:49After 16 days facing the history of friendship between their countries,
18:59these cyclists know that even with ups and downs,
19:02the two nations can thrive when they move forward together.
19:06Hirata Miyu, NHK World.
19:13Next, an update on the daughter of Japan's emperor and empress,
19:16who is on her first official overseas trip to Laos.
19:19Cholopansa Nauru at our bureau in Bangkok has the details.
19:23Cholopansa.
19:26Princess Aiko spent Tuesday touring the capital of Vientiane
19:29after arriving in the Southeast Asian country the night before.
19:33The 23-year-old princess paid a courtesy call on Laos President
19:36Tonglun Sisulit in the presidential palace, dressed in a traditional Laos costume.
19:44This year, Japan and Laos have been established for 70 years.
19:50I am very grateful to be able to visit Laos in the 70th century.
19:53The princess earlier visited what's considered the national symbol of the country,
20:06Patat Luong Temple, that dates back hundreds of years.
20:09A troupe of local artists welcomed her with a musical and dance performance.
20:12In 2012, her father, Emperor Naruhito, also visited the temple when he was crowned prince.
20:19It is such an honor to welcome her.
20:25I am so happy for the people of Laos.
20:29She is so beautiful.
20:34Princess Aiko started off the day by visiting the Victory Monument.
20:44The 49-meter-high memorial was built to commemorate those who fought for independence from France.
20:49Over the next few days, the princess will visit various places around the country,
20:53including a school and a children's hospital established by a Japanese NPO.
20:58The princess will return to Japan on Saturday.
21:00Investigators in India have arrested a second suspect in connection with last week's deadly car blast in New Delhi.
21:09They say the man is a resident of the disputed Kashmiri region.
21:13The explosion last Monday occurred near the historic Red Fort.
21:18Ten people died and more than 30 others were injured.
21:21The Indian government is treating the attack as a terrorist incident by anti-national forces.
21:26Authorities allege the second suspect provided technical support for the attack by modifying drones and attempting to make rockets.
21:34His arrest follows the detention of another Kashmiri resident, in whose name the car used in the explosion was registered.
21:42Until the latest arrest, investigators believe the man had conspired with the car's driver, who died in the blast, to carry out the attack.
21:50Local media reports that the driver of the vehicle may have had links to Islamic militants based in Pakistan.
21:58India's major carrier has announced its resuming non-stop flights between New Delhi and Shanghai starting in February.
22:06The reinstatement of the service comes after a nearly six-year hiatus.
22:09Air India on Monday became the second Indian airline to announce the resumption of flights to mainland China, following the route between Kolkata and Guangzhou that restarted last month by Indigo.
22:23Air India says the New Delhi-Shanghai flights will operate four times a week.
22:28The carriers also unveiled plans to launch direct flights between Mumbai and Shanghai next year, subject to regulatory approvals.
22:35Flights between the two neighbours had been suspended since 2020, after their military forces clashed in the disputed Himalayan border region of Ladakh.
22:46But Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping confirmed the restoration of airlinks during their summit in August.
22:54In light of the worsening relations with the US following the imposition of tariffs by the Trump administration,
23:00New Delhi has been accelerating moves to improve ties with Beijing.
23:03On the Arab Sabah Bulletin, I'm Cholopan Sanavula in Bangkok.
23:07Now let's check out the weather.
23:21Parts of Japan have been experiencing unusually heavy snowfall.
23:25Our meteorologist Yumi Hirano has the details.
23:28Over 50 centimeters of snowfall in just one day in Yubari City in Hokkaido.
23:36Tsukayu in Aomori Prefecture saw 79 centimeters, setting a record for November.
23:42The early season snowfall is affecting northern Japan.
23:45The coldest air of the season has brought snow to northern Japan.
23:53The first snowfall was reported in Akita City in this morning, three days later than normal.
24:00In Hokkaido, some public transportation was affected and limited express trains between Sapporo and Asahikawa were cancelled.
24:08Temperatures in Asahikawa City stayed below freezing even during the daytime.
24:15The combination of cold air and warmer than usual sea surface temperatures is bringing heavy snow and rain to the Sea of Japan side.
24:23The mountains of Hokuriku are likely to see their first heavy snowfall by Wednesday, while lower elevations may experience downpours.
24:34Niigata could see intense rain.
24:37Sapporo may have another day of snowy weather.
24:41Sunny skies are likely in Tokyo, but the high will be only 13.
24:44In the bigger picture across Asia, cold air is also affecting Seoul with a high of 8.
24:53Taipei may have intense downpours with a risk of flash flooding.
24:58Moving to the United States, a low pressure system is expected to intensify downpours over the southwest.
25:05Another system is bringing severe weather to the Ohio Valley.
25:11There is a risk of thunderstorm showers, gusty winds and even tornadoes, especially in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.
25:19That's all for now. Have a nice day.
25:21Have a nice day.
26:51We work on Monday morning in Takayama City in central Japan's Gifu Prefecture.
26:57A seven-meter pole was set up along the tree trunk.
27:01Robes suspended from the top were then tied to the tips of the branches.
27:05It's cold.
27:07It's cold.
27:09It's a dress.
27:11It's a winter.
27:13It's cold.
27:15It's cold.
27:17The workers are careful to maintain the tree's appearance as they are popular with visitors.
27:25Yukitsuri work in this city will be conducted on pine trees along the river and in public parks over the coming days.
27:33All right, and that's all for this edition of Newsroom Tokyo.
