00:00I'm going to wind down somewhere as an emergency.
00:09Someone just got shot in the parking lot of the Gables Park 17 in the P1.
00:14All I heard was screaming and then a loud pop, and then I saw her laying on the floor,
00:18and it was like red blood coming out of her neck, and her bones on the floor.
00:23Okay, where's the lady that was shot?
00:25She's in the garage, where you have to have a garage opener to open the door.
00:29Can you still see her, or no?
00:31No, I exhibit the building.
00:32Is anyone with a female that was injured?
00:36No, no. I don't know what happened.
00:46Get the tape out of the trunk.
00:47Do they got cameras that come in and out of this place?
00:55Yeah, they're checking on it right now.
00:57Okay. I got a hold of a homicide detector.
00:59He's waiting on the official call.
01:01He was on our dead body. He knows about it.
01:03Okay.
01:04You can call him back.
01:05Yeah, he knows. We already are going.
01:07I need you and your partner, if you will, for me.
01:10We're not here.
01:12We want to cover that site.
01:14Two people from going through.
01:15Okay, just back over here.
01:16Yeah.
01:16Do you want me to take her?
01:18Let me go.
01:19I've got this thing filming, so let me go film the kill real quick.
01:21I received a phone call that there was a female that had been shot and killed in a parking garage in a part of Dallas called Uptown.
01:29It's a very affluent area.
01:31During my tenure in homicide, this is the only case that I've ever had in Uptown.
01:36Let's go.
01:37She was found with the door to her vehicle was open, and it was pretty clear she'd been shot in the head.
01:58Next to her body was her cell phone and also a magazine from a handgun.
02:10The magazine laying next to the body is not something that we typically see, and so I believe that there was either a struggle or there was something that caused the shooter to leave a little faster than what he wanted to leave, which caused him to drop the magazine.
02:23The first thing that stood out to me was that there was no purse inside the vehicle.
02:32At the outset of looking into it, it did appear to be a robbery, but again, that was what made it so unusual because those types of things just have not taken place in that part of town.
02:44We ran up the victim's license plate, and the vehicle came back registered to Kendra Hatcher, a pediatric dentist in the Dallas area.
02:53There was one camera that captured all the cars as they came into the parking garage and as they left.
03:12Reviewing the footage, I saw the victim pull into the parking garage.
03:15I don't think her car had even made it into the parking space yet before I see a dark figure walking over to her vehicle immediately.
03:26Like, it was dead on that that was exactly what he was looking for.
03:30There was a short time frame between when the victim parked her car and to the time that she was murdered.
03:43So I knew that she was an intended target of the shooting.
03:48Examining the suspect vehicle was an older model Jeep.
03:51There was paint flaking off of it, and it's not the typical car that you see in uptown.
03:57We weren't able to see a license plate, but we took a still photo, kind of examined it, zoomed in, and we were able to determine that it was a female driver and she had brown hair.
04:07And I knew that the shooter got out of the passenger side of the vehicle, so there was at least two people in the vehicle.
04:13We knew we needed to find the owner of that Jeep, and we felt that the public could help us with that.
04:19So we pushed out a still photo on the evening news.
04:23Someone recognizes this Jeep.
04:25We wanted to give them the opportunity to give us a call.
04:27We're in a race against time, so I wanted to track down any evidence possible that we could use to put this murder together and figure out what the murder was about.
04:36I got a message from one of Kendra's friends.
04:43All of a sudden, in one telephone call, boom, your world's upside down.
04:50Yep.
04:53I would describe Kendra as ambitious.
04:58Anything that she was passionate about, she did at 100%.
05:02She went to dental school, but she always had that passion for Spanish, too.
05:07For the church, she would volunteer her dentistry time for all the kids down in Ecuador.
05:14After everything went down, I was very confused because Kendra was loved by everybody.
05:22Nobody wanted to hurt her.
05:25So it was just very odd.
05:32The staff at the apartment complex notified me that Kendra Hatcher, she'd been living at that apartment building for several months.
05:42She never had any issues at the building, and she pretty much lived a very quiet life up until this incident.
05:49We learned Kendra had a significant other, so I made my way inside the apartment complex office, and I spoke with an individual named Ricardo Paniagua.
05:58We found out Dr. Paniagua and Kendra had been dating and pretty much were head over heels for each other.
06:05They were making plans to get married and eventually moved to San Francisco.
06:09He had no answers as to why someone would want to do this to Kendra.
06:12I couldn't see that there was anything that he was trying to mislead me on.
06:17He was just more distraught, trying to wrap his brain around the fact that the person he cared about was now dead.
06:22So at that point, what I focused on was just trying to figure out who it was that could have wanted the victim dead.
06:36Dallas Police Department posted the vehicle over the local news stations, and the actual owner of the vehicle contacted the police.
06:44I received a phone call from Jose Ortiz.
06:48He believed that that was his Jeep on the news.
06:51Jose, he's a mechanic, and that's what he does by trade.
06:55He said on September 2nd, the day of the murder, his childhood friend, Brenda Delgado, and one of her friends named Crystal came to his shop and needed a replacement vehicle while he did some work for them on Brenda's car.
07:08So he loaned his Jeep out to Brenda.
07:10And Jose provided a cell phone number for Brenda, and I was able to call her on the spot and made arrangements with some of my co-workers to pick her up and bring her to the station.
07:24There wasn't anything really remarkable about her background.
07:28She went to high school here.
07:29She enrolled in dental hygienist school.
07:32She had never been arrested before, but as I was doing sort of background work, trying to pre-game my conversation, Ricardo Paniagua, Kendra's boyfriend, he called me in a panic.
07:43He said that he saw the still photo on the news, and the female driving the vehicle had a strong resemblance to his ex-girlfriend, Brenda Delgado.
07:52What he told me was that he was in a long, drawn-out relationship with Brenda.
07:59They broke it off and several times rekindled the relationship, and then things just kind of fizzled out.
08:05He told us he just considered her a friend.
08:08In fact, the day and night that this happened, one of the first people he called to describe this horrific event, or what happened, was Brenda Delgado.
08:18And obviously, her name came up twice at this point, so talking to Brenda was the most important thing in the case.
08:37Do you mind switching the chair?
08:39Oh, of course.
08:40Sorry.
08:41Like I said, I appreciate you coming out and talking to me.
08:43Yes, sir.
08:44Of course.
08:45Tell me what I can help with.
08:46Okay.
08:46Well, I'm working, of course, I'm working a murder investigation.
08:50Your name came up in the investigation, so I wanted to sit down and talk with you.
08:53Yeah, yeah.
08:54Kind of figure out, you know, what's going on and get your version of the events.
08:59How did my name come up?
09:01I don't know.
09:01Okay.
09:01I'll explain all of that to you?
09:03Yes, yes.
09:03I want to know.
09:04I decided to be very direct and upfront with Brenda because I wanted her to know that the situation was serious, and I need to get straight to the facts on this case.
09:14Kendra Hatcher was killed on Wednesday, September 2nd.
09:19She was dating, I think, a guy that you used to date.
09:23The way that your name came up in the investigation was linked to the vehicle.
09:30Okay.
09:30The jeep, black jeep.
09:35Do you recognize the vehicle?
09:37That vehicle, I think that's my friend Jose's vehicle.
09:46Okay.
09:47I talked to him earlier today.
09:49One of the things that he told me was that you dropped your car off at his shop and that you borrowed a vehicle of his.
09:58No, it wasn't me.
09:59I definitely talked to Jose and some things that he said are very different from what you're saying.
10:04And my problem is that I believe that that vehicle was used to commit this murder.
10:09I didn't know what to do with myself.
10:21I didn't know if I was supposed to be angry or sad or disbelief.
10:26It's just that feeling of that your life just completely changed is probably the hardest thing to process.
10:39I wanted to talk to you a little bit specifically about Wednesday, what you were doing Wednesday.
10:51Wednesday, I was in Carrollton.
10:54I'm in school.
10:55I'm finished in school.
10:56Okay.
10:57I got a ride to Carrollton.
10:58Okay.
10:58And I studied from maybe 12 all the way to like about 6.
11:03Who gave you a ride?
11:05Who gave me a ride?
11:06I studied her, my friend, Crystal.
11:10Crystal?
11:11Mm-hmm.
11:11Okay.
11:12And I went to Carrollton.
11:12I went to the Chili's off of George Bush.
11:16I have the receipt in my bag.
11:18I can tell you exactly.
11:19I tell Michael it's down.
11:20Okay.
11:21And you said you got the receipt in your bag?
11:22Yeah, yeah.
11:23I can show you.
11:24Yeah, let's get that.
11:25The murder took place at the same time.
11:28Brenda was at the restaurant.
11:30She immediately pulls out the receipt.
11:32And it's at the top of her wallet.
11:34It's neatly folded.
11:35It was just all too convenient.
11:46And for an experienced detective like Barnes, that's what immediately caught his eye, that
11:50something's not right here.
11:53You recognize this guy?
11:55Yes.
11:56Who is that?
11:57That's my friend Jose.
11:59So Jose said that you dropped your car off at his shop on Wednesday, specifically Wednesday.
12:03It was Crystal, my friend Crystal.
12:06Okay.
12:07So did Crystal borrow a vehicle?
12:09Yes.
12:09Crystal borrow a vehicle to take me to the library.
12:13Okay.
12:13So where did Crystal borrow one of his cars?
12:16Yes.
12:16There was that car.
12:17Crystal borrow his Jeep?
12:19Oh.
12:19Okay.
12:19She got it maybe like around 10, 10.30.
12:24You guys go to his shop on the way to Garrelton?
12:28Mm-hmm.
12:28And you guys borrow the Jeep?
12:30Mm-hmm.
12:31She kept the Jeep?
12:32Yeah.
12:32And then she had to go do some errands with her son and do some other things.
12:36And that's all I know.
12:37Okay.
12:38What's Crystal's last name?
12:40Cortez.
12:41Okay.
12:41Because I got a very different story from Jose.
12:46He told me that he was working on a vehicle for you.
12:50No.
12:51He didn't give me the car.
12:52He gave Crystal the car.
12:54I asked her.
12:55She said that she went to do errands and she went to find parking space and that's it.
12:59That's like she had her kid with her.
13:01That's all.
13:01In a parking garage or?
13:03Yeah.
13:04Are you and Crystal related?
13:05No.
13:06Okay.
13:06Because I haven't seen Crystal.
13:07But I can tell you that that picture of the young lady driving that Jeep looks a lot like you.
13:13No.
13:13She was driving.
13:14Crystal was driving that car.
13:16Well, there's more to the situation than that.
13:19There really is.
13:20Okay.
13:22What I'd like to do is give Crystal a call and see if she can come down here.
13:27Does she have a car?
13:29No.
13:29It's still not working.
13:30Okay.
13:30We'll give her a call real quick and I'll see if we can get her down here.
13:33Brenda said that her friend Crystal was inside the Jeep in the parking garage.
13:38So I felt that getting Crystal in at the same time I had Brenda there would give me an advantage of kind of using them both against each other to get the tough answers that people don't normally like giving.
13:49We reached out to Crystal and then I had co-workers pick her up and give her a ride to the office.
13:55And I knew that I needed to keep the conversation with Brenda going while I was waiting for Crystal.
14:00So I didn't want her to ask to leave or for her to shut the interview down.
14:03The key thing in all this is you.
14:05Okay.
14:05And I'm going to tell you why.
14:06The Jeep, the way Crystal gets the Jeep is through you.
14:10Yeah.
14:10Okay.
14:12The young lady that ends up dead, her boyfriend, the relation is you.
14:18You to him turn.
14:21Crystal ends up in this parking garage.
14:23Your friend, your friend's Jeep, your ex-boyfriend's girlfriend.
14:29All three of those things point back to you.
14:32That is you.
14:32You're the common theme in all of these things.
14:35So what I'm asking you is, how does this happen?
14:38There's more to this situation than somebody looking for a parking spot.
14:41Somebody looking for a parking spot never got anybody killed.
14:44Yeah, I understand.
14:45She was very unbothered, even by being at a police station talking about a murder.
14:50And I just couldn't find that emotion.
14:52That instantly is a red flag.
14:54If you can find that point to bring emotion into it, you can normally kind of break a person down and get the truth from them at that moment.
15:01When did you find out that his girlfriend was the one that was killed?
15:05Oh, yesterday.
15:05That's been on the news.
15:06Yesterday morning.
15:07And so did you say, well, maybe my friend who is in the news on this picture with this car, maybe she knows what happened.
15:16Maybe she saw something.
15:18Maybe she should talk to police.
15:19Maybe she can help you find out who killed your girlfriend.
15:22Did you mention any of those things?
15:24I didn't.
15:25I mean, I just didn't really think about it.
15:28You didn't think about it.
15:29You didn't call her to try to confirm, you know, did you see anything?
15:32Did you hear anything?
15:33She said no.
15:34I mean, I said.
15:35So you did ask her?
15:36Yeah, I asked Crystal, but she said no.
15:38Well, here's the thing.
15:41I'm going to find out what happened to this young lady.
15:45I owe that to her family.
15:47I owe that to her mom.
15:48Just like I would do the same thing if something happened to you.
15:52Okay.
15:55I'll step out for a minute.
15:56I will be right back.
15:58Okay.
15:58All right.
15:59She was backpedaling and point blame every other place except for herself.
16:04It was only going to go as far as Brenda wanted it to go.
16:07And so at this point, I knew Crystal was who I needed to talk to.
16:12Hello, how are you?
16:13Good, Crystal.
16:14Nice to meet you.
16:15Nice to meet you, too.
16:16What do you think I'm supposed to do?
16:17Oh, my God.
16:18Okay.
16:19Your name came up in this investigation.
16:22Understandable.
16:22It was my understanding that on Wednesday, this past Wednesday, that's when the murder happened.
16:28That you were with Brenda, and that you guys were hanging out.
16:33Yep.
16:34This is where we're at with this investigation.
16:37I know what happened.
16:38Okay.
16:39I'm fully aware of what happened, and I know where you were parked at when this incident happened.
16:46Yes, I was in the parking lot at the time frame.
16:49I heard the gunshot, and I'm fearful for my life.
16:53Yes, I was in downtown at that time frame.
17:07I wasn't parked, though.
17:08Okay.
17:09That is on video.
17:13It's on video.
17:14Okay.
17:15I wasn't parked, though.
17:17No.
17:18That's not going to work.
17:19This vehicle was parked on the first floor, going down near the ramp, from going from P1 to P2.
17:27Because I went to P2, but I just came in and out, and honestly, I have my son in there.
17:31I did.
17:32I don't have anything to hide, honestly.
17:34No.
17:36That's not going to work, either.
17:37I know that what you're telling me is not true.
17:40What I'm telling you is, is that it is captured on video.
17:44Right.
17:45Okay?
17:45Yeah, I feel like, I feel like I don't like all this stuff in this room.
17:50I moved the table out of the way because I wanted to get more of a personal connection with her.
17:54I could see, you know, your leg twitching, or I can see when I ask certain questions, this is what her physical response is.
18:01And I didn't want her to feel like she could kind of hide behind the table any longer.
18:06Okay, well, tell me why.
18:07Okay, I'm pulling in the parking lot, and before I pull in, there's a guy with a mask right in front of me.
18:16The guy gets in my seat, and he puts the gun right here.
18:19My son's in the back.
18:20My son is asleep the whole time.
18:21The whole time.
18:22He's like, don't look at me, don't say anything to me, nothing will happen to you or your kid.
18:26So he tells me to go in, go park.
18:29So then he gets off, and he mugs the girl.
18:33I don't know her name.
18:34I don't know anything about her.
18:36And he comes out, and he gets in the back seat, and he sits down, and he's like, drive.
18:40Just drive.
18:41He says, I know exactly what your tattoos look like.
18:43I know if you say anything, I'm going to come and get you.
18:46I booked it, and I dropped him off, and that was it.
18:49I called it a day.
18:50I don't want anything to do with this.
18:52What did he look like?
18:54He has, like, medium dreads.
18:57He's kind of tall, built, skinny, slim, honestly.
19:01I'm willing to take a photograph.
19:03I'm willing to take a photograph.
19:04Well, there's no need for that, because you're not telling me the truth.
19:07You're not telling me the truth.
19:09You want me to believe that some guy pops in your truck, and you don't know what's going on.
19:13Do you know who that young lady is that got killed?
19:15No, I don't.
19:15That's Brenda's ex-boyfriend's girlfriend.
19:19Okay, and I've been talking to her today, before you got down here.
19:25You need to tell the truth.
19:26I'm telling you the truth.
19:27No, you're not.
19:28You were inside a vehicle that was used in a murder.
19:32Why didn't you call 911 once you found out this happened?
19:36Because I didn't know it was on the news until yesterday that I found out.
19:41I mean, you knew somebody got shot.
19:43I'm scared for my life.
19:45I'm telling you right now, I don't believe this bullsh**.
19:48You're telling me that you pulled in this garage into a cage, and to sit here with a guy pointing a gun at you and your baby, and you think I'm going to believe that?
19:57Nobody will believe that.
19:59Me or anybody else that hears this.
20:02Nobody is going to believe that.
20:04I understand.
20:04Young lady, you don't understand.
20:06Whoever you're protecting is not more important than your son.
20:11That is not a decision I can make for you.
20:14Then you need to tell me the truth.
20:18My brother just wanted me to take her purse.
20:21That's it.
20:22She wanted you to take her purse?
20:23She wanted me to do it.
20:24500 just to take her purse.
20:26Since I don't have a job, I'm not employed right now, I don't have money.
20:31And how does this conversation start?
20:32Has she told you about this girl before?
20:34No.
20:34She was like, um, ex, that's how she refers to him, ex has a girlfriend.
20:41And I was like, okay.
20:42She's like, I just want to know more about girlfriend.
20:46That's it.
20:47She's like, I paid 500 to take her purse, and that's it.
20:51I said, okay.
20:52And then I was like, well, I don't want to do that because I have a kid.
20:55She's like, well, we'll pay a guy to come in and take her purse, and they'll go for more.
21:00Where do you find this guy at?
21:01Just right there at the B&B pawn shop.
21:03There's a pawn shop right there.
21:04He's walking.
21:05I pull up.
21:06Hey, you want to make some money?
21:07You pull up in the parking lot?
21:08No.
21:08I'm just driving by.
21:10Do you want to make some quick money?
21:12He said, yeah.
21:14Murders just don't happen like that.
21:15People don't pick up strangers, and two strangers hop in a car to go and steal someone's purse,
21:22and someone ends up shot in the head.
21:24I just didn't buy that.
21:25There was more truth in that story than what she had previously told me, but I still wasn't
21:31where I needed to be with her.
21:33So, you're sitting inside this Jeep, inside this parked garage.
21:37Why did you park where you parked at?
21:39I wanted somebody to see me.
21:42I purposely parked there.
21:44Okay, so...
21:45Because I didn't even know he had a gun.
21:47I really didn't know.
21:48Show me, right here.
21:51Draw me a nice picture of what this looks like on the inside of this place and where you
21:55parked at.
21:55Okay, here's the main gate, right?
21:58There's two cars.
21:59I parked in between two cars.
22:01So, he made me park there first, because he said there was no kind of mess.
22:04And then I told him it was this, and it's a white Toyota.
22:10You show up there a little after 7, and you park.
22:13You sit there for a while, and this car drives in.
22:18What do you hear?
22:20No, no, no, no.
22:22Who's saying no?
22:23I think it's the girl, Kendra.
22:25And I hear, no, no, no, no, no.
22:28Pow.
22:29Done with it.
22:30I didn't see how, where, what.
22:33I don't know.
22:35I really didn't know he had a gun.
22:36He was just supposed to go in, get her purse, and we were supposed to let him go.
22:39Okay.
22:40When you ask the guy, why did he shoot her?
22:42What did he say?
22:44She was being stubborn.
22:45He didn't want to get on the purse.
22:47I said, no, go to the jail.
22:49I have a son.
22:50He said, well, you better not say anything, because I'm going to kill you and your son.
22:53What did you do after you left the garage with this guy?
22:57I drove down, dropped him off, or he told me to drop him off.
23:01I go get Brenda, and I go home.
23:03Did you tell anybody about this?
23:05Nobody knows.
23:06Nothing.
23:06At that point, she just owned up to everything that had happened and her part in it.
23:17They have her in the vehicle.
23:18You can clearly see her.
23:21And that's enough probable cause for an arrest.
23:23The information Crystal was able to provide for me basically gave me the foundation for the investigation and that Brenda was the mastermind.
23:32Now, I want to take this information and try to use it with Brenda to see if she gives me who the shooter was and what the motive was.
23:39I just got done talking to Crystal.
23:42I had a very interesting conversation.
23:44And I know that you haven't been truthful with me.
23:47But I understand what it's like to want something that you can't have.
23:54I also know what it feels like to want something so bad that you're willing to do anything for it.
24:02Sometimes people do that for money.
24:05Sometimes people do that for attention.
24:07And sometimes people do that for love.
24:10Okay?
24:11And so what I'm asking you for is for the truth.
24:14Do you really expect for me or for anybody else to believe that this girl is dating this guy that you're still in love with is probably going to marry this guy that you're still in love with?
24:41Do you expect the world to believe that you had nothing to do with this?
24:46That you didn't have anything at all?
24:48Even though you made an arrangement for this young lady to get in this vehicle?
24:53You set that up.
24:56Crystal, she's got a very good description of how she ended up in that car and how she ended up in that garage that belongs to this young lady that's dating your ex-boyfriend that you still talk to all the time.
25:08That you still converse with and share moments with.
25:12Yes.
25:13And it's not going to take people a whole lot.
25:15This isn't rocket science.
25:18People will put this together very fast.
25:22That's why I'm asking you why.
25:25I honestly, I'm telling you, there is no plan.
25:27There's nothing.
25:28There's no motive.
25:29I have no reason.
25:30Oh, there's plenty of motive.
25:33There's plenty of motive.
25:34You cannot have him as long as she's alive.
25:37Everybody has feelings and everybody has a point where they break.
25:43Everybody has a wall.
25:44And that's what I think happened.
25:46I mean, like I'm saying, it was just very casual.
25:51Casual doesn't end up with somebody dead.
25:55No, absolutely not.
25:57So why do you want his girlfriend dead?
26:00I don't.
26:01I don't even know who he was seeing.
26:03I don't even know who he was dating.
26:05Okay.
26:05You don't know.
26:08You don't know.
26:13Wait a second.
26:16Can I just get my attorney at this time?
26:19Because I don't think we, I mean, there's not, there's, I just need my attorney because you're not understanding me.
26:25You can have your attorney.
26:27You can have your attorney.
26:28That's fine.
26:29So you're terminating this interview.
26:32Yeah, I need my attorney because I'm, I'm done.
26:34I'm tired.
26:35And I just need my attorney too.
26:37Okay.
26:39All right.
26:39We were unable to charge her with murder at the time.
26:45We didn't have enough solid evidence, but Brenda had a couple of unpaid traffic tickets that had turned into warrants.
26:51And we decided to arrest her for her unpaid traffic tickets.
26:56We decided that she needed to go to jail.
26:58And that was all we could do at the time.
27:00He immediately left the United States and headed to Mexico.
27:16It lets you know that you're on the right track, that this person is involved.
27:20And in fact, in court, flight can be introduced as evidence of guilt.
27:26It was one of those things that we're like, it just kind of sucks the air out of you for a second.
27:31Once you step foot outside of the state of Texas, my badge is no good anymore.
27:36So at this moment, the focus of the case was now identifying the shooter.
27:42Crystal is our best witness.
27:44If we are going to get Brenda, if we are going to get a shooter, we're going to have to use Crystal.
27:50Crystal had also described the shooter having a scar on his hand.
28:15You want all the individuals that are involved in the offense, but almost certainly the person that had no qualms about getting out of a car and just shooting someone in the head.
28:25You're going to want to get that person and get that person off the street.
28:28We basically took Crystal's phone records, Brenda's phone records, and we were able to come up with a number that was similar to both records that they'd spoken with numerous times.
28:47And we found that number was contacted on the day of the murder.
28:51They identify who the phone number belongs to, find out his name is Christopher Love.
28:56They're able to locate a actual photograph of Christopher Love, and he resembles the sketch that Crystal had provided.
29:05One thing that I was able to learn about him is that he'd been arrested numerous times in his life, going all the way back to his juvenile years.
29:12He's got a criminal history for some violent offenses, and he had also done some time for his involvement in those offenses.
29:20I feel pretty good about the possibility that this is my shooter.
29:23So we did a ping order on the phone, which allowed for us every 15 minutes to track a physical location of this phone.
29:41The FBI noticed that the coordinates of the phone started moving at the same time a Blue Chrysler Sebring was driving out of the parking lot.
29:49The FBI followed the Blue Chrysler Sebring, and once an individual got out of the car, they made contact with him, and the individual was named Christopher Love.
29:59Outside of his physical appearance and similarity to the sketch, he also was in possession of this cell phone that had been in contact with Brendel and Crystal, also on the day of the murder.
30:19The interview with Christopher was very challenging.
30:25He was pretty much unknown to the case until a few minutes before I'm sitting down with him in a room.
30:32The surveillance video of the murder, I couldn't 100% say that it's him because it's a grainy video.
30:38But I'm going to work him as long as I need to, to get him to tell me the truth.
30:41My name is Detective Lawrence.
30:44I'm working a murder investigation.
30:46Your name came up during the investigation, okay?
30:49There was a dentist that was killed.
30:51Have you heard anything about that?
31:01And so I need to speak with you in regards to this murder.
31:04All right.
31:05This is my partner, Chaney.
31:06What's up, man?
31:07Let me see your hands real quick, man.
31:09I was looking at your hands.
31:10You got a scar right here on this hand.
31:13What happened to your hand right here?
31:15Somebody shot me.
31:17You got shot?
31:18Mm-hmm.
31:20They tried to rob me in Memphis.
31:22They tried to conject me anyway.
31:24They bullied my hand right there.
31:26They noticed the scar on his hand that Crystal had described the shooter having.
31:31It's a match.
31:32That by itself is enough of what we call probable cause, but it wouldn't have been enough for the conviction.
31:38Okay.
31:40Well, here's the thing, man.
31:42Me and my partner got called in on September 2nd to work a murder over in Uptown.
31:49You know where Uptown is in Dallas?
31:51No.
31:52Have you heard anything about that?
31:54There was a dentist that was killed.
31:56A dentist?
31:57A dentist.
31:58Kendra Hatcher.
31:59Was killed in an apartment garage.
32:03That was the kind of thing to me.
32:05Okay.
32:05You know a female by the name of Crystal?
32:11You don't know Crystal Cortez?
32:12What about a Brenda Delgado?
32:17No.
32:19Have you ever seen this girl?
32:23I don't think so.
32:24I don't know these people.
32:25Okay.
32:25What about a Brenda Delgado?
32:26I don't know these people.
32:30Let me ask you this.
32:32Have you ever rode in a black Jeep Cherokee?
32:34I ain't rode in no Jeep Cherokee.
32:36Okay.
32:37Your name came up in this investigation as being friends with these two girls.
32:47That you know these two girls.
32:49From where?
32:50Is it here?
32:51I don't know how you met them.
32:53That's why I'm talking to you today.
32:55To figure out if you do know them.
32:57And if you do know them, maybe there's a reason why you know them.
33:01No.
33:01What I'm interested in is how your phone number will end up in these girls' phones.
33:09I ain't gonna tell them.
33:11Probably weed.
33:13You ever go to North Dallas?
33:15No.
33:16No reason your phone records would put you there either, is it?
33:20Uh-uh.
33:25Dallas people is crazy, man.
33:27Why you say that?
33:28This is crazy right here.
33:31What's crazy?
33:32What's crazy about?
33:33And I'm sitting in a homicide officer named D.
33:37Well, we got to clean this up, man.
33:40This young lady right here was able to very distinctly provide me details about how you look
33:45and where she has been with you.
33:47Now, for her not to know you, she pulling a lot of damn details out of nowhere.
33:51That's how I understand it.
33:55And whatever you say is cool.
33:57But I didn't do this, bro.
33:59Now, I'm going to ask you about the next girl, I think.
34:02And where's she?
34:03She's right here.
34:04To me, she's a lethal.
34:07Like a lethal weapon.
34:09She's the one that, you know how when they put the, when they're looking at a crime family,
34:15they always have the top picture at the top, and then they have the spider web coming down.
34:20Well, her picture's up there.
34:21She's number one.
34:23You get what I'm saying?
34:24Mm-hmm.
34:25Let me ask you, once we get her when she says she know you, she'll point the finger at you.
34:32That's what I don't know about me.
34:33I don't know if she's going to point the finger at me because I can't control her.
34:36I just said she don't know me.
34:40No, she don't know me.
34:46Can I get something to drink?
34:48Yeah, what you want to drink, man?
34:51I want some coffee, but I don't take anything.
34:54Man, why do, why do people talking like you are involved in this situation, man?
35:00that's what I'm thinking about right now.
35:02Huh?
35:03I said that's what I'm thinking about right now.
35:05And they're providing facts of how to prove that you involved in it.
35:11Man, how many people would they provide?
35:14He's nonchalant.
35:15He doesn't know anything.
35:16He didn't do it.
35:17You know, this goes on for hours.
35:19I don't have a good a lot of times.
35:21People call me for weed on my phone.
35:27I don't know them.
35:28I know I ain't never rode with them, for sure.
35:31Ain't no weapon.
35:32I got a time right now for a weapon.
35:35He plays like I got no camera.
35:37What do you think you got killed?
35:39Come on, you know I got cameras.
35:41So they know what the sugar look like.
35:44It's a lot of stuff that is being done to this case.
35:47So we're rolling into the next morning.
35:49At that point, we had been up all night, and we're taking a break from the interrogation
35:54to kind of refocus and reshift.
35:56One of my co-workers went out to the autopound where Christopher Love's car was at, and the
36:01K-9 began doing a sniff search on the blue Chrysler.
36:05The K-9 alerted to gunpowder immediately, and they found a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun
36:11tucked behind the center console and on the passenger side of the vehicle.
36:15The magazine laying next to the body belonged to a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun.
36:21We did ballistic testing, and we knew it was the firearm for the murder.
36:25It kind of gave me a second wind.
36:27Everything kind of opened up for me again, so I wanted to confront him with a picture
36:31of this firearm and give him an opportunity to explain it.
36:35We need to have a conversation, all right?
36:38We need to search for one of your car, and we'll find a guy in your car.
36:48I got a guy in your car.
36:50All right, here's what I got for.
36:55What was going on there?
37:11Detective Barnes confronted him with a murder weapon, and then that's when you start seeing
37:15him being more willing to share information.
37:18How did you get linked up with Brenda?
37:22Crystal.
37:23So give me a rundown of this day, man.
37:25I got up, went over there, served a little weed and .
37:29Crystal.
37:30She came over there about five, and we rolled over there.
37:33Where'd y'all go?
37:35Downtown.
37:37How did you know what time to be there?
37:39I didn't.
37:41They knew all the information, .
37:44All my information was to snatch your ID.
37:48I need the ID, the ID, the ID.
37:51That's all it was, the ID.
37:52Who else was in the car with y'all?
37:53There wasn't nobody but us.
37:54Her son wasn't in there?
37:55No.
37:56Yeah.
37:57No, it was just you and Crystal in there?
37:58Yeah.
37:59What kind of conversation did you have with Brenda about this?
38:00Or what did she tell you?
38:01She claimed they was the cartel.
38:02It was just like, go take this for the cartel, and I'm going to pay you.
38:04And she told you she was from the cartel?
38:05Yeah.
38:06And Christopher is told that Brenda Delgado is with the cartel, and if he was with the
38:23cartel, and if he agrees to do this, she'll make sure that he has enough cocaine to sell
38:32for as long as he wants to sell cocaine.
38:34So in his mind, this is his way to go from a small-time drug dealer to a big-time drug
38:40dealer.
38:41So he agrees to do it.
38:42We and y'all are going to get Brenda.
38:44We're going to work on getting Brenda, man.
38:46Because she the f***ing puzzle y'all, the top of the puzzle y'all need.
38:51What I mean?
38:52We're going to go get her.
38:53You can promise that.
38:54You can be promising.
38:55They been doing that f***ing, or planning it, or whatever they was doing.
39:00Whatever happened, happened a couple months ago.
39:03Three, four months ago.
39:05They been watching this lady for three, four months.
39:10Yeah, they ran some game money.
39:14The girl that got killed was Brenda's.
39:17Ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend.
39:19Brenda's?
39:20Yeah.
39:21She didn't have nothing to do with any cartel.
39:24She was just a dentist.
39:26They go to work every day.
39:27Just a regular person.
39:29Fake-ass, my f***ing cartel leader, some f***.
39:33Fake-ass s***.
39:35I f***ing need to go to jail with me.
39:37F***ing know I'm going to jail.
39:39They might as well go to.
39:41Okay.
39:42I'm going to go knock this paperwork out.
39:43All right.
39:44It was a very quick and short-lived round of high fives going around the office.
40:00But I think the immediate thing was, what can we do now to get Brenda in custody?
40:13Brenda Delgado did not pull the trigger, but police say she planned and paid for others to carry out the heinous crime.
40:20Now she's become the ninth woman in history to make the FBI's ten most wanted lists since it began in 1950.
40:27After placing her on this list, we started receiving phone calls, relaying intelligence of where her whereabouts were at.
40:42Did you kill that?
40:44Did you kill the dentist?
40:46When I found out she was captured, there was a lady that was sitting next to me, a complete random stranger, explained everything.
40:53And I was like, can I have a hug?
40:54She's like, yeah, I gave a big hug.
40:56And so, yeah, overwhelming feelings of joy.
41:16You introduced me to new feelings of absolute hatred and disgust, things I've never thought I could feel before.
41:28Your ability to destroy life, both emotionally and physically, despicable and incomprehensible.
41:35You are ashamed of humanity, and you are a destroyer of lives.
41:39May God have mercy on you.
41:46We tried Brenda's case eight months later.
41:49The jury was only out 20 minutes before they came back with a guilty verdict.
41:53For capital murder, she received a life without parole.
41:56Brenda Delgado, justice has been served for the people whose lives were touched in one way or another by this incredible, amazing woman.
42:15Who I was honored to be Kendra Hatcher's mother.
42:20There is no reason in the world that that young lady should be dead. None.
42:30She's a completely innocent victim.
42:32That makes it even more ridiculous for this to have taken place.
42:36After Brenda was found guilty, me and my family were at the hotel, and there's this big rainbow that's, like, filling up the Dallas sky.
42:45I can feel that she's kind of my guardian angel.
42:49I want people to know that when they do come across somebody like Kendra, to really cherish it.
42:59If it is true that the good die young, then make every moment count.
