00:00Meta will finally limit personalized ads for EU users.
00:05Meta is preparing to do something that many European users have been begging for since approximately forever.
00:10Let people on Facebook and Instagram dial back the personalized ads.
00:15Not remove them entirely, calm down, this isn't a utopia, but limit them.
00:19The feature will start rolling out in January 2026,
00:22giving EU users a shiny new button that effectively says,
00:25sure, take some data, but stop acting like you know my shoe size and breakup history.
00:31The European Commission announced the update and wasted no time framing it as a milestone.
00:36According to EU officials, this marks the first time Meta has offered this type of meaningful ad control choice on its platforms.
00:43The options will be simple.
00:46Share everything and get hyper-targeted ads,
00:48or share much less and get ads that are more generic, slightly less psychic, and possibly more chaotic.
00:54Good luck, advertisers.
00:57This move didn't come from sudden corporate generosity or a change of heart deep within Meta HQ.
01:02It came after a 200 million euro, roughly $266 million,
01:06fine earlier this year for violating the block's Digital Markets Act.
01:10That law says platforms must give users real choice before hoovering up their data for ad targeting,
01:16not just force people to choose between pay real money to avoid ads and be monetized like a walking data pinata.
01:23Meta tried that approach anyway.
01:25The EU was not impressed.
01:27Since then, the Commission and Meta have been in what officials described as a close dialogue,
01:32which sounds like diplomatic speak for several long, stern meetings.
01:36After the rollout next year, regulators will monitor how many users adopt the new ad settings
01:41and whether the change actually improves privacy or simply adds another layer of confusing toggles no one ever touches.
01:48In the bigger picture, this feels like a preview of a new era
01:52where tech giants aren't just offering features users want, they're being forced to.
01:57And in the EU, at least, Meta is learning that when regulators say give people a choice,
02:02they don't mean two bad ones.
02:03What are our use of this.
02:04What are those features you can accomplish?
