00:00European Union's fines X 120 million euros. Musk cuts off EU ad account.
00:06On Friday, the European Union decided it was time to stop playing warning shots
00:10and instead aim directly at X with a 120 million euro fine
00:14for allegedly violating the Digital Services Act.
00:17This marks the first time the EU has actually pulled the monetary trigger under the law,
00:22and if there's one thing we've learned from the past few years,
00:25it's that Elon Musk was never going to respond with quiet corporate diplomacy.
00:30Instead, Musk logged onto his own platform and offered a one-word rebuttal.
00:35B.S. Concise. Elegant. Shakespearean.
00:39But the drama didn't end there.
00:41Just 24 hours later, Nikita Beer, X's head of product,
00:45claimed the European Commission had pulled a sneaky move to amplify its announcement post.
00:50According to Beer, the Commission dusted off an ad account it hadn't used since 2021
00:55and used a special format meant only for promotional material.
00:59Essentially a digital megaphone to blast out news of the fine.
01:03He also accused the EU of disguising the post as a video link to boost engagement,
01:07even though it actually contained a legitimate video.
01:10Semantics, perhaps, but enough to spark outrage within XHQ.
01:15In response, Beer did what any reasonable executive of a social platform might do
01:19when annoyed by a regulatory body.
01:20He shut down the Commission's ad account entirely.
01:24Now, before you imagine EU officials scrambling in panic,
01:27it's worth noting that if they really haven't used the account in three years,
01:31this move lands somewhere between symbolic protest
01:33and unplugging a karaoke machine no one touches.
01:36Still, X isn't off the hook.
01:38It can appeal, but for now, the fine stands.
01:41And in addition to writing a large check,
01:43X has 60 days to explain how it plans to clean up misleading verified checkmarks
01:48or risk more penalties.
