00:00Windows 11 leads, yet a billion PCs continue with Windows 10.
00:05Windows 11 is officially ahead in the Windows popularity race,
00:09with just under 54% of desktop users running the new kid, at least by the numbers.
00:15Despite Windows 11's lead, Windows 10 still runs on about 43% of desktops,
00:20highlighting users' loyalty to older systems and hardware.
00:23The real headline?
00:25Nearly 1 billion PCs are still running Windows 10,
00:27even after Microsoft officially ended mainstream support back in October.
00:32And half of those machines wouldn't qualify for Windows 11
00:35even if their owners suddenly got upgrade-happy.
00:38As first revealed by TechSpot, Dell's chief operating officer dropped the bombshell.
00:42Roughly 500 million Windows machines currently in use are too ancient
00:46to meet the new OS's strict hardware requirements.
00:49Around 500 million PCs can run Windows 11 but remain on Windows 10,
00:53as users feel no urgent need to upgrade and continue using supported apps.
00:57It's not just user inertia at play.
01:01As the register notes, Microsoft is still providing extended security updates,
01:06ESUs, to keep Windows 10 patched for at least another year,
01:10free for anyone with OneDrive,
01:12or for a one-time $30 fee or a pile of Microsoft rewards points.
01:16That safety net is making the upgrade cliff look more like a gentle slope.
01:20The updated OS launched in late 2021 came with strict minimum system requirements,
01:26leaving millions of perfectly functional PCs unable to install it.
01:30Many users stick with Windows 10 because upgrading often requires a new PC,
01:34and the process can be tricky.
01:36In businesses, IT teams use the ESU grace period to delay upgrades,
01:41avoiding disruption and extra costs.
01:43Rolling out Windows 11 often means buying new computers and retraining staff,
01:48which is an easy no thanks for most businesses,
01:51especially when things are already working fine.
01:54Windows 11 may be officially leading,
01:56but most of the billion Windows 10 users are sticking with the older system,
01:59at least until security support ends.
