Did Red Sox fumble the bag? Greg: "I don't understand how you don't end up with Pete Alonso on this baseball team"
Alonso to division rival Orioles?! Would you have given the 'Polar Bear' 5-years? Thoughts on #RedSox #MLB Winter Meetings?
Transcript
00:00Curtis is less angry at those at the Boston Red Sox than I thought he would be when I walked in here this morning.
00:08You know, there are some days where people reveal themselves.
00:13And, you know, pour one out for Will Fleming on X. That's really sad. I'm going to have a rough day.
00:20Did Will leave X? Really?
00:23Yeah. He got mad at people for taking his prediction or prognostication, informed opinion, and running with it.
00:32Well, it can be very vitriolic.
00:33Beautiful words by a beautiful man.
00:36Yeah. My thing that I'll never understand, if somebody tells you something and says, you know, everybody's going to be getting a $1,000 bonus tomorrow.
00:46Okay.
00:47And you go around and tell all these people that they're going to get a $1,000 bonus, and the bonus doesn't come and they get mad at you.
00:55Wouldn't you be mad at the person that lied to you, not at the people that you told they were getting $1,000?
00:59Yes. I think that's who I would direct my head.
01:02Yeah.
01:03Once paid is check.
01:04Once paid is check.
01:06But you can't do the victory lap when Devers gets traded saying, I said something was brewing.
01:11No.
01:12And then go tail between your legs and leave the app.
01:15Like, I am done criticizing the Red Sox.
01:19My opinion on them is firmly established.
01:22My issue is with Jermaine Wiggins.
01:23That's it.
01:24My issue is with Will Fleming.
01:25Yeah.
01:25My issue is with Jared Karabas or Lou Merloni or any one of the people that cover the team.
01:30The water carriers is what you're saying.
01:32The people that get enraged at Red Sox fans for wanting the team to be better.
01:37Now, I put my water down, man.
01:38They fumbled a bag on this one.
01:40Okay.
01:40Well, they did fumble the bag.
01:41Big time.
01:42I don't understand how you don't end up with Pete Alonzo on this baseball team.
01:49And it's just money.
01:52And it's so obvious, like, that you're waiting around and hoping that you're going to get some kind of a bargain on guys.
02:01And all you do is leave yourself right now.
02:05They're in a worse position than they were at the end of the season.
02:09You couldn't find a line.
02:11Like, you got to hope that Bregman wants to come back.
02:14But even if Bregman comes back, you still ass out.
02:17It's not enough.
02:18If Bregman comes back, it's not enough.
02:20It's just, I don't understand.
02:22Like, you know that somebody else is going to pay for these guys.
02:27In this case, it's the Baltimore Orioles, and they're in your division.
02:33Go back to last year, right?
02:35The Soto pursuit.
02:36And how the deal was consummated when the Red Sox were at a dinner nearby to Scott Boris out in the West Coast.
02:45They weren't even one of the semifinalists.
02:48And they had that whole song and dance about Ortiz flying out doing the PowerPoint presentation about playing in Boston.
02:55Like, they don't care.
03:00Like, I don't know how many ways I have to say it and how many ways I can.
03:04The Red Sox are no longer the Boston Red Sox that you came to know and love.
03:10That's just it.
03:12What, 30?
03:13It's the years or the money.
03:15So they were under $30 million a year and under five years for Pete Alonso.
03:20They had to be because, do you think Pete Alonso, if he had his druthers, would prefer to be in Boston or would prefer to be in Baltimore?
03:30Boston.
03:31Oh, Boston.
03:31His wife is from Quincy, for crying out loud.
03:35The Wire is a good show.
03:36Like, born and raised.
03:38Right.
03:38So, it's...
03:40You know what the market was.
03:41Like, if you're the Red Sox, you know exactly what the market, because Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber are basically identical.
03:49And once Schwarber signed that deal, like, you know exactly what the market is.
03:53Like, if you want a real shot of Pete Alonso, you're going to have to give him five years, 150.
03:59If there's a team that might have to go a little bit more than that, where it seems like Baltimore went to five years, 155.
04:06Like, all right, you know what the market is going to be.
04:08And so, the Red Sox, yeah, they definitely fumble the bag.
04:12And there's nothing that Brezbach can do.
04:13What does it leave you...
04:15What does it leave Red Sox fans with as an option?
04:18Marte or something like that, Curtis?
04:20Like, is that what...
04:21Now they're whispering to everybody that they're in on Marte?
04:25Good morning.
04:25There's no option, because I heard Jonesy keep talking about this yesterday.
04:31There's not another bat out there that is, you know, free agent bat that's going to hit you, you know, 40-plus home runs.
04:38Because even with the Marte, even with the Bobachette...
04:41I had, I think, 28 taters last year.
04:44Like, that's not the same thing.
04:46That's what Scheim had last night.
04:48And if you were...
04:49Taters.
04:49If you were Brezbach...
04:50He doesn't need his own, though.
04:52I mean, that's a clear indication of how bad they are.
04:54If the cook doesn't eat.
04:56You know what I mean, Scheim?
04:58Oh, I get you, Greg.
04:59You don't want to eat stuff you spackle on the wall.
05:02Never trust a skinny chef.
05:04The thing that is, like...
05:06I hate that I have been right, because I like the Red Sox.
05:11I grew up loving the Red Sox.
05:13I want them to be good.
05:14It's beneficial to this radio station if the Red Sox are good.
05:17But it's not just that they don't care.
05:20It's that John Henry is using the hard-earned money of the people of this region to create
05:28a salary cap whereby that money goes to other teams and he doesn't have to spend as much
05:34so he can create better organizations in Liverpool, in Pittsburgh with the Penguins,
05:40with his Roush Fenway nonsense, with LeBron James.
05:43This is why he wants a salary cap.
05:47And I said at the beginning, there's no way that John Henry is going to be the leading
05:51owner and telling other owners they have to curb spending and then be spending at the
05:54top of the market.
05:55It just wasn't going to happen.
05:57And nobody listens.
05:58And there's nothing the bot can do because he said he wanted a power bat and that's what
06:02they were saying, that they were going to focus on this offseason.
06:06Well, the bot could do whatever the bot wants to do.
06:11I don't buy that excuse.
06:14If he doesn't end up delivering, he's going to be gone.
06:17Well, he was the 11th guy that interviewed.
06:18Why do you think the other 10 turned it down?
06:19No, what I'm saying is this.
06:20Look at Hein Blum.
06:22I mean, Hein Blum came in here, did the bad work, the dirty work for him.
06:29Steely Dan rejoined, perhaps, when it came to Mookie and did what they wanted.
06:36And then they shipped him out of here.
06:38So same thing's going to happen to Breslau.
06:40Yeah.
06:40Like, and they're so close.
06:43Like, they were so, and Curtis, you bring up the fans.
06:46You suffer through the last, whatever it was, three, four seasons since 2021 with them.
06:53The fans suffer through it with them.
06:55And then they're right there.
06:57Right.
06:57After last season.
06:59Right.
06:59Right there.
06:59Right.
07:00With a promising bunch of young guys.
07:02Right.
07:02Who you just need to add to.
07:05Right.
07:05You just need to add a bat to.
07:06Right.
07:07And they're not willing to write the check.
07:09But it's not only not willing to write the check.
07:11It is, the only thing that they are elite at is gaslighting.
07:15Like, it'd be one thing if we heard, you know, if everything works out, maybe they'd come in and be like a mystery team on Alonso.
07:24It's that they're telling you well in advance that they want to sign these guys.
07:28And I hate to do it, but yesterday I said that John Henry is going out there telling fans that they're going to spend and do all these things.
07:35When Sam Kennedy told us they wouldn't do that because it's a competitive disadvantage, which told you right then and there that they weren't going to spend.
07:43It was just to get to the fans to maybe buy some tickets before Christmas so that they don't get disappointed.
07:48Guys, Craig Breslow, the Chief Baseball Officer of the Boston Red Sox.
07:53Hi.
07:54Good morning.
07:55Good morning, Craig.
07:56Good morning.
07:57Oh, those booed birds are going to be even louder.
08:01Very loud.
08:01Good morning.
08:02And we got a lot to get to.
08:04Oh, yeah, man.
08:04On today's show, it's a Bruins Thursday, and Judd Surratt will join us at 820, 830.
08:12Is that when normally we speak with the voice of the Boston Bruins?
08:16I'm guessing yes.
08:17All right.
08:17Bruins Thursday here.
08:18By the way, kudos for Wiggy from everyday listener of the show, our pal John Jakes, who said you actually had a great hockey question for Jeremy Swayman yesterday on the show.
08:32I appreciate that.
08:33Did you do it yourself, or was it Chachi?
08:34No, no, I did that one myself.
08:36You did it yourself.
08:37Yeah, I've got a couple in recent interviews here.
08:41Great questions.
08:42The entire presser related to extreme urgency and aggression, and I sit here today, like, Sam Kennedy is from Brookline.
08:55He's born and raised in Boston.
08:58John Henry is a, you know, he's a venture capitalist soybean farmer predictor that made billions of dollars.
09:06Carpetbagger.
09:07I just, like, at what point does doing this for a living make you feel like crap?
09:13Like, you know the scene in the town where one of the guys that works for John Hamm in the FBI office grew up in Boston, grew up around the people that he was putting into jail, and he was like, my father was good to you.
09:26My family was good to you, and this is how you're spending your life.
09:29And it's like, you know, there are other things Sam Kennedy could do than to be the mouthpiece of somebody that's not being straight with the fans.
09:37It's a special time.
09:38Like, is this really what you want to do with your life, being the guy that's the happy face for someone that's tearing down the team that you grew up loving?
09:45I don't know.
09:46Like, it's just so unseemly.
09:48Everything about this organization is unseemly.
09:50Every Saturday morning when the Red Sox are at home, Ken and I are in center field at Fenway Park.
09:55And every time I walk into Fenway Park when it's empty, I feel like the luckiest man in the world.
10:00That is a place that I love.
10:03Oh, my God.
10:04I still remember walking in there the day the World Series started in 2004.
10:08My dumb sister was getting tapas on Beacon Street.
10:11I run in there, get to see the team introduced before game one of the World Series.
10:14It's one of the greatest moments of my life.
10:16And now I see the place full with these people that are getting tours of it at like 75 bucks a pop.
10:22And all that money is going to fund other teams and other cities.
10:27And all the love and support that this city has for this team is being not only taken for granted, but manipulated and used against the very people that they're supposed to be building a team for.
10:39It's just so, like, I get John Henry.
10:42He is, he's not, he's not going to change.
10:46But, like, if you're Sam Kennedy, is this how you want to do things?
