2-8... Greg asks the question, "What does this Red Sox team do well?" The Red Sox are now the only team in MLB that does not have 3 wins.
Curtis: "They are compelling drama"
Transcript
00:00Speaking of 6-7, Chime, I should not be amazed by the modern miracles of science,
00:07but I still remain amazed at those that are setting lines legally and elsewise.
00:13When you look at that game last night, it's spot on.
00:17Yep, every time.
00:18They are spot on the line so as to make the most money.
00:22I don't know why I'm impressed by it, but I'm impressed by it.
00:25But we gave the people the right number, Greg.
00:26We said take the points.
00:28Yes, we did.
00:28You and I.
00:30You and I, with a little tip from the Sharps yesterday.
00:32Spot on.
00:34But excellent basketball game.
00:36That's because in college basketball, the offense is trash.
00:41I mean, it's so amazing.
00:44Meggo and I were talking about this off air because, you know, obviously Meggo,
00:47she's the basketball genius in the room.
00:50Oh, my goodness.
00:50Well, you know, you are the one around that.
00:53I mean, I played a little bit in the Shelby Regional High School.
00:56I don't know if you know that or not.
00:57But Meggo's playing.
00:58I don't know if you ever heard of double zero or not.
01:00I mean, I have heard of the Chief before.
01:02Most successful picks in one game.
01:04I thought you were awesome.
01:05I've heard of the Chief before.
01:06But Meggo's boots.
01:07Nobody took a charge better in practice than I did.
01:10That's tough.
01:11Oh, to take a charge drill, I excelled at that.
01:13You're a glue guy.
01:14Stand right there.
01:15Hands over my nuts.
01:16Boom.
01:16I'm on the floor.
01:18Meggo's boots on the ground.
01:19Stilettos on the ground.
01:20Running shoes on the ground when it comes to basketball.
01:22Okay.
01:22In those locker rooms.
01:23And you get to the NBA and we talk about the three-point shot.
01:28You watch college basketball and I feel like these guys could not throw the ball in the ocean from behind
01:35the three-point line.
01:36The three-point shooting is so bad.
01:38And it's weird how there's really no transition.
01:41Like the college basketball game, and I think the reason why Michigan was able to win that game is because
01:47of their bigs.
01:47And just the fact that they were just too big for UConn.
01:50And then when they get to the pros, it's like.
01:53Well, and you got to give it to UConn because they got in foul trouble pretty early with both of
01:59those starting guards.
02:01And ended up hanging in.
02:03I mean, they were leading that game up until, I don't know, five, six minutes left in the first half.
02:09And they hung in there.
02:11They absolutely hung in there.
02:12Well, I think at one point in time, they might have been one of 14 from behind three-point line.
02:17It's just, you know, it was a good game.
02:19Like I said, Michigan was just too big for them.
02:23Yeah.
02:23And they had.
02:24Could have started a little bit later from my taste.
02:27I don't know about you, Chris.
02:28I think there were three people not in high school that watched the full game.
02:32And by the way, though, the game they had against Duke, they were one for 11 from three in the
02:37first half.
02:37And they were down 18.
02:38And I was like, well, UConn is closer than they were against Duke.
02:42And they might have a shot, but Michigan was the better team.
02:44Wiggy made an excellent point right before we came on air, though.
02:47Who?
02:48Who did?
02:48Wiggy.
02:49You sure it was him?
02:50Yeah.
02:50It was definitely.
02:50Not only are two of the national champ teams now in football and basketball, these Midwestern teams,
02:59all their dudes came through the transfer portal.
03:02Preach.
03:04Michigan's whole start in five were all transfers.
03:06And we obviously know about Indiana and what they were able to do with the coach coming from JMU and
03:11their transfer portal.
03:13But Michigan's, their whole start in five was all transfer guys.
03:16You know?
03:17And it just goes to show you, I mean, the Big Ten's got to be loving it with football and
03:22basketball.
03:22But it just shows you how the world of college sports is transitioning into, you know, the transfer portal world.
03:317-7-4-TEXT and a reminder that you can text us at any time during the show on the
03:38Subaru of New England text line.
03:40Looking for clarification, I guess, from you and maybe from Meggo.
03:43Are you saying that the college game is better because there are less three-pointers?
03:49Uh, no.
03:51I am not saying that.
03:53They do shoot a lot of three-pointers in the NBA.
03:55Are the ratings better?
03:57Yes, they are.
03:58Well, I would say...
04:00It's such an odd sensitivity by the NBA hard-o's.
04:03It's like, oh, the below-the-rim basketball and poor three-point shooting is just diabolical.
04:07I would say that March Madness, to a certain extent, is probably better ratings than maybe some regular season games.
04:15But no one's sitting there watching Michigan and Wisconsin.
04:19It's not regular season games.
04:21It's better watch.
04:22It's more watching the NBA Finals.
04:24More people watch these games than the NBA Finals.
04:27Yeah, I would say March Madness.
04:29I agree with that.
04:29That's what I was saying.
04:30But no, I'm talking about no one's watching Michigan, Wisconsin, and the regular season.
04:35But Curtis is telling you that when it comes to the important games, to the playoffs, in either college or
04:43the NBA, college currently out-ranks the national basketball.
04:47Yeah, I would say in March Madness.
04:49Ratings-wise.
04:49Yeah, March Madness, I would say is...
04:51Yes, yeah.
04:52Yeah, but no one's disputing that.
04:54I think because there are so many more people that are, like, I would say, novice fans of March Madness.
05:02And they just love to get into it because of their office pools and that kind of thing.
05:06But that hasn't always been the case.
05:08For the vast majority of my life, the NBA Finals have had much better ratings than the March Madness.
05:12Yeah, I would think that the NBA has turned off some people because of the three-point line.
05:17I think the NBA turned off some people because of the whole, you know, Black Lives Matter and some of
05:23the stuff that was going on.
05:24And I think that turned some fans away when the whole Trump thing and basketball players getting into some of
05:29the political stuff.
05:31And not just basketball players, but the NBA.
05:33So, yeah, I would agree with you on March Madness.
05:36You really think that second part is a big part of it?
05:39Yes.
05:39Because I, like, okay, I know I'm a little delusional.
05:43Like, I am the Lulu.
05:45I love the NBA.
05:46And I always have, like, it was the league that I grew up with the most.
05:50I'm with you.
05:51So, I don't know.
05:53Like, I'm going to be overly defensive about it.
05:55And I know that.
05:56But for you guys, like, why do you think the casual fan is not as interested in the NBA Finals,
06:04even if it's, like, a good matchup?
06:06Like, Curtis, to your point that college basketball gets these great ratings deep in the playoffs in March Madness.
06:12Not just, like, oh, the crazy first two days of play, but the NBA playoffs.
06:18Last year, I thought, like, the first two rounds of the NBA playoffs were excellent.
06:21Right.
06:21Didn't go the way in any way that the Celtics wanted to, but it was really entertaining.
06:26Because nobody's going into their office and going, hey, let's do an NBA playoff pool.
06:30Where I think when you look at college basketball, there are so many more fans that generally might not watch
06:36the game.
06:37But when March Madness comes around, everybody's got a pool.
06:40Everybody's getting involved.
06:41Everybody's kind of watching.
06:42And it's still the, like, purest of these kids in the sense of, like, they're, you know, they're not professionals.
06:48But they are professionals.
06:50They're making crazy money.
06:51I'm saying when we were coming up, right?
06:53And so you're talking about these fans versus these big egos and, you know, guys like LeBron and not playing
06:59back-to-backs and three-point shots.
07:01And I told you, I think part of it was some of that stuff with the civil, the social and
07:09just and some of the things that NBA players were talking about.
07:12Yeah.
07:12Yeah.
07:12Well, it's interesting.
07:14But, I mean, the Black Lives Matter was going on in 2022 when Golden State played the Celtics in the
07:19NBA finals.
07:19And those numbers were big.
07:21But if you don't think that that's a little bit has turned off some fans.
07:25But they've had March Madness has brackets my entire life.
07:28No, I know that.
07:28And I would think now it would be less relevant because everybody can just bet on games.
07:32I know.
07:32But we're talking about the decline of the NBA a little bit.
07:35Right.
07:36I'm not talking.
07:36In March Madness, the college, the Black Lives and the social and just movement wasn't as big in college as
07:43it was in the pros.
07:44I'm not saying that's the main reason why.
07:46But there are fans who would turn the way because of that.
07:48I know.
07:48And I'm giving you games that were after that.
07:50I know that.
07:50And that had very good ratings.
07:52Right.
07:52And I think it's always the matchup that's going to help the NBA when it comes to the finals.
07:56You know, I think it's always going to be the matchups that are going to help out.
08:00But there, I think there's a little bit of the three-point shooters, a little bit of this.
08:03The matchup plays a key role into it.
08:05Golden State, Boston was a good matchup.
08:07What was it?
08:09Last year was Oklahoma City and...
08:12Pacers.
08:13The Pacers.
08:13Yeah, that's not what the league wants.
08:15No one wants to see that.
08:16That's not what the league wants.
08:17No one wants to see that.
08:18Like, Boston and Dallas was probably a pretty decent matchup.
08:20And I bet those ratings did better than Pacers and OKC.
08:25Well, speaking of a product that is unwatchable, can we get to the Red Sox?
08:31Oh, man.
08:32Oh, man.
08:43The Red Sox.
08:44They are now 2-8.
08:47The only team in Major League Baseball that doesn't have three wins.
08:52That is historically bad, by the way.
08:54They were talking about it on the broadcast last night.
08:57I think they said that when it comes to starting the season and losing eight of your first 10, there
09:06have been only four.
09:08You got to check me on this, Shime.
09:10But only four Red Sox teams in 80 years that have done that, that have started that badly.
09:16There may be less than that.
09:18But it is horrific over there.
09:24And it's last night, the pitching, again, with the starting pitcher, Baio had more walks than innings pitched last night.
09:33Four walks from him, three innings pitched.
09:36You've got errors that guys are making.
09:40I'll start with Roman Anthony.
09:42I don't know what the – I love the guy.
