00:00Amazing. This stuff you don't wear like the silver stuff, so I like it a lot.
00:04Even though it was pretty messy over there on the table, it cleans right up.
00:09Welcome to Sam's Garage presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
00:30This week on Sam's Garage, the great race kicks off in St. Paul, Minnesota.
00:54135 classics, hidden checkpoints, and nine days of grit and friendship
00:59on the road to South Carolina.
01:05Then we head to Southfield Classics for a deep dive into wiring the heart of an electric truck.
01:14Finally, Sam tackles a 66 Corvette for some classic steering and suspension maintenance.
01:25We have 135 plus cars in the great race.
01:29Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance, and so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:35From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:37Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard. It's a complete family member. It's an experience.
01:42All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:45Winning an ace in the great race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:49Were we on time and everybody else was wrong? Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:53I guess we'll find out tonight.
01:55From St. Paul to the Carolinas, 135 vintage machines chase the clock on the open road.
02:08I sold my car about a year ago, and Randy Cohen had purchased that car, and I've talked to him several times.
02:16But my dad and uncle had a dealership, Nagy Olds in Myersdale, and my dad had purchased that car for my mom.
02:24And it's been in our family 53 years. So I surprised Randy and come down to see it.
02:30So it was very, very nice to see the car for the last time.
02:33And well, hopefully not the last time, but yeah, it was very, very nice.
02:37We'd text message each other a couple of times and it was like, it was like I said, a last minute decision to come down to see it.
02:45Like I said, it sat in our garage for 53 years. It's hard to see it again and see it drive away.
02:50Yeah, because I ran it through high school up through my senior year until I joined the military.
02:54And then it went back in the garage and it only got out once in a while.
02:58And my middle daughter used it to get married in. That was really the last time it was out for a good trip.
03:03Well, it felt good. But Randy said if he does it next year, his brother said maybe he might not be the navigator.
03:10And I said, well, put me in that seat. I might take that seat if you do it again next year.
03:14And he said he'd let me know. Now, like he said, he said they haven't got lost yet.
03:18And as long as they finish the race, that's what they're happy with. That would be good for the first time.
03:23My dad collected antique cars. So he has a poster in the garage. I think it was 1986.
03:29I think it went through Bedford, Pennsylvania. And dad had a 37 Ford and he ran down to see him go through.
03:37Our day's been spot on today. I got to remember zero to 47 seconds.
03:43Seven seconds. That's what I use. Not easy. Not 12. That's an easy, easy roll.
03:48No, he's been really good so far. Like I said, the navigators and the drivers are really frustrated at each other.
03:52You can see it by their body language. Yeah. And so far we're doing a good job.
03:56The good thing is that we laugh about it. We smile. We've been in the car with each other for 12 days, 2,300 miles.
04:02And if we can do it, you guys can do it. Yeah. We just have a wonderful time together.
04:08Well, Pat came to see me at my shop, was looking for parts and information on his transmission.
04:14I fixed the transmission for me. He was so happy with it.
04:18I wanted to put advertising on his truck and he said, well, why don't you just come with us?
04:23You could drive the chase truck. And then if we've got other problems, you could help out.
04:27He talked me into it. I said, okay. I didn't know if I'd like it or not, but it's been a lot of fun. A lot of fun.
04:33We've had a great time. Yeah.
04:35Well, Brian and I own the transmission shop together and I met Pat there.
04:39And when he invited Brian, he said I was welcome to come.
04:42So last year I flew to New York and met them about halfway through the great race.
04:46And this year I've been on it the whole time. Just a little bit of work in the parking lot.
04:49Yeah. Not really had any problems, just some service work and, but it's been running good.
04:54I just drove this car from South Florida all the way up to St. Paul and back.
04:59Now here, the race has been great. The car's been running good, but unfortunately yesterday at the finish line,
05:06the air conditioning unit went out and I was able to diagnose the issue.
05:10Can I get the part because it's 20 years old? Hopefully the manufacturer of vintage air will be able to send me a part.
05:16If not, I'll make one. And we're having a great time. We're enjoying ourselves.
05:21This is our 13th year doing this. We're having a great time.
05:25We love the camaraderie and the friends that we keep seeing every year.
05:30We're happy that it's almost over, but we have a lot of mixed emotions.
05:34We're ready for the next year.
05:40Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:45Brought to you by the following companies.
05:55Welcome back to Sam's Garage presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:20A family-run business and a family of racers, Team Sharp hits the road in their 1916 Hudson.
06:38From rain to road mazes, it's teamwork, precision, and pure racing passion all the way to the finish line.
06:45Family-run and operated business for 33 years.
06:48We supply the automotive industry with fasteners, chemicals, and shop supplies.
06:52And we focus on American-made products with quality service and quality products.
06:57I grew up in the business my whole life.
06:59I've done everything from cleaning the bathrooms, to working in the warehouse, to picking and packing orders, to out on the road selling.
07:07And now I have my fiancé coming on board as well.
07:12We're ready to take the family business to the next level.
07:15We're sponsoring Team Sharp.
07:17They're out of Freeport, New York.
07:19They're running a 1916 Hudson Hill Climber.
07:22Previous champions.
07:24They won last year's race in the previous year.
07:26Howard, the dad, wasn't able to participate in the race this year.
07:30His daughter-in-law, Dana, stepped in to take his place as the driver.
07:34And she's been working with Doug, and the two of them are heading up Team Sharp this year.
07:43They sent us into what they call a maze, which is where they have the cars go on the same route multiple times.
07:48This was the worst one that most everybody on the race has been through.
07:52We saw the same car three or four different times.
07:55The same roads two or three different times.
07:58And there were two or three different roads that we went back and forth on.
08:01I'm real sure he got tired of me, because we'd be going down.
08:04And we were about, what, were we 36 today?
08:07Yeah, car number 39.
08:0939, okay.
08:10So we're going down the roads, and I'm like, hey, man, I don't remember seeing any of the race cars when we were coming this way,
08:16because we passed probably 10 race cars every turn we took.
08:19And luckily, we didn't get caught up by any of them.
08:22The only issue we had today was the rain, really.
08:25There were a couple times where we came up on cars that were a little bit off,
08:28and we were right on their bumper, you know, three seconds behind them.
08:30And that's close for the race.
08:32Yeah.
08:33We don't want to be that close.
08:34Luckily, we were all going in different directions, though.
08:36They would turn, and we would keep going, so.
08:38So today was Stage 8.
08:39On the last, on Stage 8 and Stage 9, last two days, you can't throw out any of your legs.
08:45So if you have a bad leg today, it stays.
08:48So we were happy when we saw our score.
08:51Yeah.
08:5223 seconds roll with one leg was a 16.
08:54So if we would have thrown that out, it would have been great, but.
09:01This has been an excellent day.
09:02We had a great lunch up in Galax, Virginia.
09:04That little town community there in Appalachia came out to host the cars, and it was absolutely incredible.
09:09Just beautiful rolling streets with mature trees, but we got out here tonight.
09:12We've had a little sprinkle or two, but overall, this has been a fantastic day.
09:16This community really showed out as well, so we are just thrilled to be in the great state of North Carolina.
09:20Town of Mooresville is Race City USA.
09:24This is probably one of the greatest towns to live in if you're a car guy.
09:29If you like cars, come to Mooresville.
09:32We've got a show every second Sunday, I believe, of the month here.
09:36We also got a car group that meets every Wednesday, and literally there's a car show every week, every day of the week in Mooresville, North Carolina.
09:45So, but there's a lot of other history here as far as NASCAR goes as well.
09:48So, and that's why we love living here.
09:51It's one of our best days.
09:53One of our best days.
09:55And wait till you hear the story.
09:57It's a story for sure.
09:58It's a story.
09:59It started with a chipped tooth in Galax for this guy.
10:01Yeah.
10:02And then it went uphill from there.
10:04Good run today, guys.
10:06Great run.
10:07Last day.
10:08One of our best days on one of the toughest parts.
10:11There was a family of people in front of their house at the front yard, and we had missed the turn.
10:16I'd turn around and go back.
10:17I went around a racer at 90 in front of the house where the people were cheering right in front of two cars that were coming this way, which were our cars.
10:34You guys have heard me talk about how important grounds are, especially when you're converting one of these old cars into fuel injection.
10:42All these old cars, they only have one ground strap, heavy ground for the starter wire somewhere in front of the engine.
10:47And there's a second ground that's going to be a strap that's very thin.
10:50It's going to be old at the intake manifold going to the firewall.
10:53Well, when you're doing fuel injection, most cases, you're going to take the intake manifold off.
10:57Go ahead and replace that ground because it's old.
10:59And the ground up front that's going to be for the starter is not enough.
11:02You've got to add two grounds.
11:04So you're going to add one ground to the intake manifold or the cylinder head to the firewall, making sure you scratch the surface and you have good integrity on both sides.
11:11Second ground is going to go from the block to the chassis as well, making sure, once again, you've cleaned it and you've got plenty of integrity because the voltage has got to be perfect for the Edelbrock or Holley Sniper to work properly.
11:23In the instructions, they tell you to go to the battery with the power and ground, but they never tell you to address the grounds on the vehicle.
11:29Very important that when you guys are converting these old cars and you're installing an Edelbrock or a Sniper or any kind of fuel injection system, that you address those grounds, add two grounds, one for redundancy, and that way you'll have good lasting performance with no issues and you won't be stranded on the side of the road.
11:45Welcome back to more Sam's Garage presented by NHOU.
11:50At Southfield Classics, Noah and Dan reveal the wiring backbone of their high voltage builds.
12:10Streamlined harnesses designed for safety, serviceability, and performance.
12:17Alright, we're back here at Southfield Classics. I'm here with Noah and Dan and below us, we've got the complete wire harness for the 12-volt side right now.
12:25Yes, it is. It is actually the complete 12-volt harness that controls a lot of the components that are in this battery system.
12:32You know, that's not bad when you think about it. When you think about how much wiring goes into a modern car, this, as much as it controls, it's not too scary.
12:41It's not too scary for some people, but for a lot of people they look at it and go, it's a nightmare.
12:46But we have pretty detailed diagrams of how everything runs, where it's supposed to run to, and we're able to run our connectors, pin them out ourselves to get the correct lengths.
12:54So you're doing all this in-house?
12:55Yes, a lot of it's going to be in-house right now, and then eventually we'll get to a point where it'll just come to us pre-laid out, pre-loomed.
13:03So what does this actually connect to and control?
13:06Everything from the control systems for the high-voltage, you know, for the junction boxes, to the AC.
13:14Every single configuration that has to be operated by the ECU or can be controlled by the ECU.
13:20The CAN bus, all the accessories, all the low-voltage systems.
13:22Correct.
13:23It's what turns on the high-voltage system?
13:24Correct.
13:25Correct.
13:26Every high-voltage vehicle out there has this system in it, and that's what's actually failing in the manufactured cars.
13:31Correct.
13:32Coming from the dealers.
13:33Yeah, that's why we're trying to make sure that we take and troubleshoot all the problems that we have before we put it in.
13:39So which vehicle would this be for?
13:41This will be for the white truck that we are currently working on right now, so we can finish here in a short period of time.
13:46Let's say this GT, would it be more or less wires in the sense of a GT, you think?
13:52I guess it could be probably almost about the same.
13:55We try to simplify a lot of these things to where it's easier for us to install and for whoever technician to diagnose down the road if it has to be, can be diagnosed a lot easier.
14:05That's the main thing is to make these vehicles serviceable.
14:07Correct.
14:08And that was our main objective when we started all this is, you know, we were all former, I was a former technician and everything.
14:14We wanted to make sure that we were easy to service, easy to trace if there was any wiring issues.
14:19And you guys try your best, now we all build cars out there, when we're building the car, you think you have everything laid out, but then you're like, man, I need this one wire for accessory, I need this one wire for this relay.
14:29You guys have already thought of all that so that you don't have any extras?
14:32If we eliminate components, so basically when we build the truck and we decide, hey, we don't want the ambient lighting set up, then that is already built into the harness, we just loom it up and take it out.
14:42Do you leave anything for a future accessory add-on?
14:45It'll have an accessory add-on capability. In other words, it's got a loom on its own that's just for accessories.
14:51If somebody wanted to upgrade, say the stereo or something like that.
14:54You got accessory, you got ignition switch on, all that good stuff.
14:57Yep.
14:58How long does it take to create this harness in-house?
15:00This harness and only the main reason for particularly why this one took so long, it should only take maybe a day, day and a half.
15:08This one took a couple of days because there was a lot of ways that we wanted to go over a couple of things and they're not very big.
15:14They're just little things that we want to correct and make sure we get right this time around.
15:18We're also documenting all of our harness locations and routing and all that as we're going through this process.
15:24So we've built three or four trucks now, but this is basically finalizing that actual harness of what it's going to look like.
15:31There you go, guys. This is the 12 volt system of the heart of these high voltage vehicles.
15:35You're going to see here at Southfield Classics. This is very cool. As you can see, it's high quality.
15:40It's going to last you a long time. And that's what you need when you've got a manufactured vehicle.
15:44Check us out next time. We'll be showing you further process of the white truck getting put back together.
15:48Sam's garage is presented by NH oil undercoating is brought to you by the following companies.
16:08Welcome back to Sam's garage presented by NHLU.
16:35Sam rebuilds a 66 Corvette steering and suspension, teaching the finer points of tie rod setup, greasing, and radiator upgrades that keep classics road ready.
17:00She's got her gloves on, so I'm going to go ahead and have her do the suspension upgrade.
17:06It's not really an upgrade. It's really just a rebuild, right?
17:08We're going to do the steering components, which is the tie rods, inner and outer, the sleeves, everything you do to adjust the steering.
17:15And then we'll put it back together. We'll paint everything and it'll look brand new again.
17:18You ready to get dirty?
17:19I'm ready.
17:20You look excited.
17:21Yeah, I love old suspension.
17:23All right, so when you look in underneath here and you see the whole suspension, you can see it's got old school power steering.
17:29The return line going to the pump is completely pinched, which could have caused all the leakage on the highest pressure side.
17:35So we're going to address that also.
17:37Today, what we're going to do is remove and replace the tie rod ends, the inner, the outer on both sides, along with the adjustment sleeve, making it all new.
17:45That way, when it goes to the alignment shop, it'll be very easily adjusted.
17:50What we got here is this nut is spinning with the joint, okay?
17:55No matter what I do, I can't get it.
17:57So I got to stop the joint from turning.
18:00We don't care about the ball joints or the rubber because we're replacing them.
18:03So this is where a pitchfork is okay to use.
18:06This is going to be really nice.
18:08Once we put the engine in it, the cold case radiator, along with the rest of the suspension with the shocks and the bushings for the rear suspension, it'll be solid again.
18:16And when John's turning the wheel, it'll be very reactive, which is what we want.
18:21Okay.
18:22So now what we're going to do is roll this over here.
18:26And what we want to do is that's the passenger, that's the driver, okay?
18:30We got new sleeves here and new joints.
18:32They're the same on either side.
18:34We want to make this assembly the same length.
18:37Let's take this here.
18:38There is a left and a right thread.
18:40So we want to put this in here.
18:42Okay.
18:43We want to come over on the other side.
18:45Take another one.
18:46And what you want to do is when you're adjusting this, you want equal threads on both sides.
18:55We want to go ahead and tighten the sleeves, making sure everything is good.
19:11So did that.
19:12Grease the fittings.
19:13Very important when you guys grease the fittings.
19:15It comes with a little bit of grease from the factory, but three to four pumps.
19:18Look at the boot.
19:19Make sure the boot is expanding, then stop pumping.
19:21Because you don't want it to end up looking like this.
19:23Look at all that buildup.
19:24And a lot of you guys today may not even run into these because they took away grease fittings
19:2830 years ago in cars.
19:29But when you're working on the custom shop, you're always going to have them.
19:32While you have the grease gun in your hand, take a look and see if there's anything else that needs to be greased.
19:36I went ahead and did the two U-joints on the outsides of the half shafts.
19:41Went ahead and did those.
19:42And that should be it.
19:43It's going to be a nice project when it's done.
19:45So the factory radiator is held in place with the fan shroud.
19:49The cold case radiator goes in place and I like to use the aluminum fan shroud that's with it
19:54because the factory one has two tabs missing from it.
19:57So I need to figure out a mounting point.
19:59I've got my Rogo fastener zip tie holding it in place right now.
20:02And you know I kind of like it.
20:03I should just double it up, save me a bunch of time and the customer money.
20:06But I'm not going to do that.
20:07Also, when I put the vintage air in, that fan shroud and that big fan is going to do a lot for the cooling aspect of the condenser.
20:14All right, we got John taken care of as far as a little bit of maintenance goes.
20:17Got the steering taken care of.
20:19Next we're going to do the suspension and hopefully one day next year they'll see it completed.
20:23But unfortunately, you don't want to see me putting the engine in and out of this thing.
20:26This is pretty cool, the 66 Corvette 327.
20:29If you guys need to do any kind of maintenance like this, don't forget Summit Racing not only sells performance products,
20:35but they also sell maintenance products and name brands as well.
20:39So go to Summit Racing and take care of your ride.
