00:15Verona's ancient arena will receive some modern upgrades and become more accessible
00:20to people with disabilities before the 2026 Milan Cortina games
00:25built by the Romans in the first century the arena was envisioned for gladiator fights and
00:33ancient hunts of exotic beasts it has been repurposed as a medieval marketplace and most
00:38recently functions as the venue of a renowned opera festival this is the first time in its
00:46history that it will undergo renovation to allow access for people with motor disabilities the
00:52upcoming games are the perfect opportunity to upgrade the accessibility and safety of the old
00:57building before it welcomes the 11 000 people expected for the closing ceremony on february 22nd
01:04and the nearly 10 000 for the opening ceremony of the paralympic games on march 6
01:10one part of the work is about access therefore we are improving the main roads for pedestrians and
01:26bicycles and for everybody so also for people with disabilities from the main train station and the main
01:35parking in the city to the piazza bra which is the point to enter the arena then there is the work
01:43that we do inside the arena which is split into parts the one part that is made specifically for the
01:50olympic games and the part of legacy which will stay as heritage to the city and that will help maki this
01:59most beautiful monument accessible both for those who come visit like today and for those who will come
02:07to see the opera or any other shows the update is part of a 18 million euro project that improves
02:22accessibility for the entire area surrounding the edification and is being overseen by the governmental
02:28company responsible for olympic infrastructure the works include making a kilometer stretch of
02:35sidewalks from verona's main train station to the arena safer for wheelchairs or baby strollers by
02:41building small curb ramps bike lanes are also being built inside the arena the centerpiece project is a
02:49wheelchair accessible ramp clad with pre-rusted steel and the same prunstone from the lesinia hills above
02:55verona that was used by the romans to build the colossus
03:07we are making a ramp made of steel and clad with local stone the same stone used to build the arena
03:152000 years ago that will allow for an easy access and eliminate the difference between the street level
03:23and the level of the wall of the arena the entrance to the arena will be moved to that same spot
03:30so siena infrastructure milano pertina will also build another steel ramp also clad with stone that
03:39will allow people with disabilities to reach the toilets the disability the importance of this
03:51process goes beyond the sporting event itself it guarantees the fundamental right to culture and sport
