00:06And this young man was brought to my attention,
00:08and after I saw what he's been doing in the Detroit area,
00:12I knew I had to bring him on.
00:14His name is Barry Jennings.
00:15You should already know who he is because he's a part of the Uprising TV network.
00:19Good morning. How you doing?
00:20Good morning. Thank you so much for having me.
00:22I'm a real honored to be here.
00:23I'm excited to talk to you because one of my friends, Asia, DJ Venus,
00:27she put me on to you,
00:28and once I started doing a deep dive, I was obsessed.
00:31So let's start at the very beginning.
00:32Tell me about how you started Uprising,
00:35how you got to the name,
00:36what was the process of why you wanted to create this network?
00:40First off, I want to shout out Asia.
00:41Thank you so much for thinking of me when she asked for people to come on the show.
00:45But all right, so with the network, man, okay, first and foremost,
00:48it started because I was making music at one point.
00:52I was rapping at one point,
00:53and there was like a huge gap between like what the local,
01:00like there was a need for local media,
01:02local like on the ground media,
01:03not versus like channel two, channel four,
01:06things like that on the ground media.
01:07And there wasn't nobody doing it at the time.
01:10And I said,
01:11there's way too many rappers coming on the scene at the same time.
01:15All of us is not getting on.
01:16Let's be real.
01:16All of us is not getting on.
01:17But somebody needs to document what this scene looks like.
01:21And then that evolved into more than just musicians.
01:23And then it evolved into,
01:25all right, maybe I could produce some shows
01:26because there's no TV networks,
01:28at least the people that look like me,
01:30that are producing these shows.
01:32And I'm like, okay, hold on.
01:34And that's what Uprising Network started.
01:35I love that.
01:36I love that you saw a gap
01:38and decided that you were going to fill it.
01:39Because I think a lot of people will notice the gap
01:41and don't realize that they can do the work to like make it work.
01:44So when you speak of gap,
01:46what were some of the things
01:50that you wanted to highlight within the city
01:52that you felt like,
01:53you know, people like me who are outsiders
01:55who are just coming into the city
01:56didn't necessarily know?
01:58Was that a reason of why you wanted to also use the platform?
02:01Yes.
02:02The main goal was,
02:04what really is the trigger is that
02:07in the mainstream media,
02:08Detroit is always just looked at as destitute,
02:12as every city has its gritty areas.
02:16Of course, every city has its gritty areas.
02:18But I give,
02:18of course,
02:19because I'm a Detroit,
02:20I'm very hypersensitive to whenever it's highlighted
02:22in the media,
02:23they show the broken down buildings,
02:25the abandoned neighborhoods,
02:27and the crazy areas.
02:29And it's like Detroit,
02:30the sun shines here too in Detroit.
02:32Right.
02:32So when you look at the logo
02:33and you see the brown hands
02:35and the sun shining,
02:36it's like,
02:37I want to show that the sun shines here too
02:39because you're not going to see it nowhere else in the media.
02:40It has to come from people that's actually here doing the work.
02:43I was going to ask you about that
02:44because I noticed how intentional,
02:46I thought it was an intentional decision
02:47to add that into the logo.
02:48So I'm glad that you said that
02:49because I do think that as someone who moved here,
02:53my idea of Detroit was skewed.
02:55Obviously,
02:56I knew the good things
02:56because obviously you hear the big things like Motown
02:59and the people who have come from Detroit,
03:01but you don't hear about
03:02what good is happening within the city.
03:05Yes.
03:05Within the city,
03:06you hear all,
03:07like you said,
03:08the destitution,
03:09the broken down families
03:10and the projects and everything.
03:12So I'm glad that you were intentional
03:13about making that happen
03:15and you specified brown people.
03:18With this,
03:18I know that you spotlight black and brown creatives,
03:22talents,
03:22and just the culture at arm.
03:24So what does real representation mean to you
03:28and how do you take that responsibility
03:29into making this network?
03:32Wow,
03:32that is a great question.
03:35What is authenticity?
03:36First and foremost,
03:38it has to be like,
03:39the traitor,
03:40we know if you real a mile away.
03:43Oh yeah,
03:43y'all do.
03:44We know if it's real or not.
03:46So that's the first thing.
03:47Like it has to be from people,
03:49like there is,
03:52I feel like the bookmark was like
03:54the Detroit going into bankruptcy
03:55and how the coming back from it.
03:58Old Detroit,
03:59the recipe,
04:00so to speak,
04:01is starting to fade a little bit
04:02and there's a new Detroit happening
04:04and I want to keep that alive
04:05and the only way to do that
04:07is to tell the stories
04:08from authentic Detroiters
04:10and there's no other way around it.
04:13I won't have it no other way.
04:15And before we deep dive
04:16into those authentic stories,
04:17I obviously know that
04:19with any business,
04:20there are ups and downs
04:21and middle ground.
04:22So what has been
04:23one of the biggest challenges
04:24trying to create independent media,
04:26especially in the climate
04:29that we're in
04:29where independent media
04:31is being like stifled essentially.
04:33So what has been
04:34the hardest part for you
04:35to keep going on it?
04:37Well,
04:38in the beginning,
04:39the hardest part
04:40was getting people
04:41to understand
04:42this is a community.
04:43We all need each other.
04:44Yeah.
04:45Detroit
04:46has always had
04:48this crabs in the barrel mentality
04:49where,
04:50all right,
04:50only one of us
04:51is going to make it out
04:51and we fighting to the death for it.
04:53But I don't,
04:54I never looked at it that way.
04:55I always looked like
04:55if we all sitting
04:56in the same room together,
04:57look at the three of us
04:58in this room
04:58and we reach out
04:59and touch each other,
04:59why is it that we can't
05:00exactly pull each other up
05:01at the same time?
05:03So what the hardest part for me,
05:05like I said,
05:05was trying to get people
05:06to understand
05:07that there was a community
05:08when the community
05:08that you see now
05:09in Detroit
05:10did not exist
05:10when I started.
05:11None of this,
05:12these creator clubs,
05:14the Tubi productions,
05:16none of that started
05:17when I was here
05:18when I started.
05:19So to see that grow,
05:20not to say that I have
05:21the hand in making that happen,
05:23but I definitely was
05:24an inspiration
05:25to a lot of it.
05:26And I hear that
05:27when I see these people
05:28in person.
05:29So the biggest thing
05:31was that
05:31and then finances.
05:32So with,
05:33because of finances,
05:34I had to learn
05:34how to do everything
05:35on my own.
05:36I shoot,
05:36I write,
05:37I edit,
05:37I jump in front of the camera
05:38if I have to,
05:39I book the talent.
05:43I'm all,
05:43I'm the executor
05:45from A to Z.
05:46So I had to learn that
05:47because of the finances
05:48and it's like,
05:49all right,
05:49I know money talks
05:50and I,
05:51if I'm getting started
05:51and I really don't have
05:52no experience under my belt,
05:53how can I get people
05:54to take me serious
05:55and show that this is
05:57a serious project
05:57I'm working on?
05:58So I had to learn
05:59all this on my own
06:00to show how serious I am.
06:03Right.
06:03And then that's when
06:04people started taking me
06:05a lot more serious
06:06and I saw more elevation happening.
06:07Exactly.
06:08I think once you invest
06:09in yourself,
06:09people want to invest in you.
06:11Yes.
06:11But you can only do so much
06:14and I think that the fact
06:16that you were able
06:17to understand that
06:18it's all on you
06:20and you need it to be
06:20the one that can facilitate it.
06:22I've always said that
06:23if I do have a company
06:24where I'm having employees,
06:26I want to make sure
06:26that I know every single thing
06:28that I'm asking them to do.
06:29Yes.
06:29Because if I'm asking them to do
06:30and I can't do it,
06:31how dare I?
06:32Yes.
06:33And then on top of that,
06:33I loved that you were also
06:35talking about a linear community
06:37because I think one of the things
06:38that I love about Issa Rae
06:39is that she says
06:40that she always tries
06:41to work horizontal
06:42and not vertical
06:43because you should always
06:44come with the people
06:45who are rising with you
06:46because you never know
06:47that might be the next Spike Lee
06:48next to you
06:49and you just missed out
06:51on that opportunity.
06:52So I'm glad that you
06:53not only shared that
06:54but also I'm going to assume
06:56share that with the people
06:57who are a part of your network
06:58because your network
06:59is stacked so far.
07:00You got some good people on there.
07:02Come on now, Ask Jen.
07:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:05And like the best part about it
07:07I didn't know
07:10any of these people
07:11to begin with.
07:11It's me hitting the ground
07:13running on my own.
07:14What you see right now
07:15is my team.
07:16Wow.
07:16So on projects,
07:17I bring people in
07:18and so that's one
07:19of the most things
07:20I'm proud of.
07:20I'm not afraid
07:21to get my hands dirty.
07:22So all those people
07:23that you see on screen
07:24on the network,
07:25they eventually became friends
07:26and they eventually became
07:26my peers and things like that
07:28but none of this was
07:30it's literally like
07:31I just put one seed
07:32in the ground
07:32and I just kept watering
07:33and watering
07:34until it bloomed.
07:34But yeah,
07:35the people that you
07:36that Jen that you named
07:37that is my star player
07:38that's for sure
07:38and all the people
07:40that's come through
07:41the network
07:41on camera
07:42and behind the camera
07:43for that matter.
07:44I'm really appreciative
07:45of them.
07:46And speaking of that,
07:47what's a moment
07:48or a project
07:48through your network
07:49that's made you think
07:50yeah, this is why
07:51I made this.
07:52This is the envisioning
07:53coming into reality.
07:55Like what is a moment
07:56or even a project
07:57like I said?
07:58Oh,
07:59I've had quite a few
08:01of those moments.
08:02I can say
08:05I'm going to name
08:06a few of them.
08:07So the first time
08:08was the launch
08:09of the Uprising Network.
08:10When I launched
08:11the network
08:12it was mostly
08:13fast forward a little bit.
08:15When I had
08:16the launch party
08:17I had everybody
08:19like we dress
08:20I need a black tie
08:21event
08:22we dressing up
08:23and surprisingly
08:24most of my rapper
08:25friends that is usually
08:26in rapper uniform
08:28they came dressed
08:29and I had
08:30more than half
08:31of the people
08:31that was at
08:32that launch party
08:33I did not know.
08:33They showed up
08:34on the strength
08:35of oh this is
08:36a new idea
08:36this is something
08:37that we can get behind
08:38so I felt like
08:39I was making it then.
08:40Then I threw
08:41another event
08:42in 2020
08:43like two weeks
08:43before the world
08:44shut down.
08:45Wow.
08:45And people showed up
08:46I had
08:47this place
08:49now it's called
08:50Crea Cafe
08:51we threw it
08:51at Crea Cafe
08:52slapped it out
08:53I sold all
08:54of my merch
08:55that's when I first
08:56started selling
08:57my black on
08:57operated history
08:58hoodies there
08:58sold out there
09:00and that was
09:01another moment
09:02for me
09:02another one
09:03is when
09:04I did
09:05we did
09:05the second
09:06XGen show
09:07and we did it
09:08at L Club
09:08sold it out
09:09and again
09:11this all started
09:12just from
09:12an idea
09:13I had in my head
09:13and isn't that
09:14so incredible
09:14how like
09:15an idea
09:16that you
09:17probably second
09:18guessed
09:18a bunch of times
09:19is turning
09:20into something
09:20that you couldn't
09:21have ever even
09:22fathomed
09:23could be possible
09:23I couldn't stop
09:24it if I wanted
09:24to right now
09:25literally
09:25and that's
09:26the beauty
09:27of knowing
09:27your purpose
09:28and walking
09:29in it
09:29and knowing
09:30that it's bigger
09:31than you
09:32and that even
09:33the things
09:33that you
09:33imagined
09:35are probably
09:35very minuscule
09:37to what the plan
09:38is going to end
09:39up being
09:39yes
09:40I love that

09:44the network
09:44because I'm curious
09:45about how like
09:45you decide
09:46who gets
09:47to be on the network
09:48obviously you're
09:49open to
09:51anyone pitching
09:52to you
09:52but what comes
09:53into the producer
09:54and to the
09:55director of this
09:56mindset of
09:57okay you get
09:58a slot on here
09:59but why
10:00you gotta be
10:00doing the work
10:01first

10:02already be

10:04meet you
10:04where you

11:01at the idea
11:02of pivot

11:05thing doesn't

11:10have to
11:10figure out
11:10how to
11:11re-envision

14:43of personalities

14:47don't understand
14:48that that is
14:48one of the
14:49most crucial

14:50when you're

14:51any sort

14:53to know
14:55how to speak
14:56to people
14:56and how
14:57to get

14:58to see
14:58the vision
14:58that only
14:59you see
14:59because no

15:01what you
15:02are manifesting

15:04to figure
15:05out a way
