00:00What's good? It is Leisha B. from the all-new Morning Rollout.
00:03And today I wanted to get into a conversation about just what Detroit has to offer.
00:09And the fact that so many people always think of the politicians, the people who have huge platforms.
00:15But there are culture changes happening every single day that you may not actually know are changing the culture here.
00:22And I got someone who's definitely changing the culture because you probably already know his name.
00:26His name is Black Gold. How you doing?
00:28I'm good. How are you?
00:30I'm doing great because going down your accolades really made me lock in that you have been doing some crazy things in your life.
00:37Yes.
00:37So we got to start from the beginning.
00:39I want to ask this first question.
00:42What's the most Detroit thing about you?
00:44Music.
00:45True.
00:45Yeah.
00:46That makes sense.
00:47I mean, it is a music city.
00:48So when it comes to what you do, you're a producer, you're a DJ, what is, I guess, what in the Detroit musical environment first drew you to wanting to dive into production and into DJ?
01:03It really started off with, shout out to my mom, my parents, my grandparents.
01:11It was just like so much so embedded in my family.
01:16I didn't know really much, know what to do with it as a kid.
01:21I just kept like singing like stuff out.
01:25You know what I'm saying?
01:26Like trying to get out, oh, what if this beat sounded like this or something like this.
01:30So like as a kid, I was already thinking of isolating stems or however like things are now to, you know what I'm saying, production wise.
01:39And I didn't know I was going to be DJing either.
01:42So it was really like I was just humming and, you know, trying to get things out and then end up finding myself making music around like early beginning stages of high school.
01:55It was around like my freshman year of high school, like 2007.
02:00And then it just went on up from there.
02:02Like couldn't stop me.
02:05Like I was like, yo, I get to make anything I want.
02:07It's a wrap, son.
02:08You know what I'm saying?
02:08So like it was legit.
02:10It was up there.
02:11I love that.
02:11Shout out to moms.
02:12Yeah, shout out to the fam.
02:13Yeah, shout out to the fam.
02:14They gave me that soul for sure.
02:16So for you, was there like a song that really made you be like, okay, how did they make that?
02:21Or what was that spark besides just humming?
02:24I can tell you a song for sure.
02:24I kept humming in the shower.
02:26I didn't know.
02:26We didn't have Shazam at like six, seven.
02:29You know what I'm saying?
02:30So like it was, wow, I can't even give you the song right now.
02:35I can hum it.
02:36I think.
02:37Go ahead, give us a little hum.
02:39What's this song, man?
02:41It's so many songs now.
02:42That's the thing as a DJ.
02:43It's like it's so many as an artist too.
02:46It's so many songs now.
02:48It's just like in the head.
02:51It's just like that one song that you just can't get out no more.
02:54Or like, you know, it's there.
02:56But it's definitely it's a Pete Rock joint.
02:57Okay.
02:59It's no, I can't even get it out.
03:03Wow.
03:03Hey, at least you had the artists.
03:04Yeah, we did.
03:05But that's a deep cut.
03:05It is a Pete Rock joint, but I kept like humming it in the shower because I didn't know what
03:09it was.
03:10But like, I knew the bass line was just like so funky.
03:13And you were saying like singing and humming this like six?
03:16Yeah, I kept doing this thing and I'm like, I don't know what song it is, but like it
03:19just, you know, until I found out like, wait, I know what it is now.
03:24It's the Chief Rocker joint.
03:27Okay.
03:28That's a good one for a six, seven year old to be humming all the time.
03:30You know, yeah, but it was that bass line.
03:31I was just like, you know, that sample is like insane.
03:37So like, that was the only thing I knew as a child.
03:40I'm like, yo, like, this is it.
03:43Like, I went everywhere.
03:44Like I said, I had like my whole, you know, child series, just like riding a bike.
03:48It would just be, that was like the main bass line that would be stuck in my head.
03:51So like being able to curate or like sample something like that as an adult is just like,
03:56of course, that sparks back memories.
03:59You know what I'm saying?
03:59And of course, yeah.
04:01I love that that was the moment that you just couldn't get out of your head.
04:04I feel like that's with all music.
04:06And based off of what I've researched, your influences also make me know that we are going
04:10to be very good friends.
04:13Roy Arias.
04:14You got Slum, obviously Slum Village.
04:16Come on now.
04:17Jill Scott.
04:18Yep.
04:19And like, just off of those alone, I was like, oh yeah, we're going to be kinfolk.
04:22We're going to be cool.
04:24So how do those inspirations and obviously others that are in the city of Detroit manifest
04:29in your work now, either when you're in the studio or just behind the decks?
04:33Um, man, uh, it really made me unapologetically me, um, when I'm behind the decks and when
04:44it comes to making music now.
04:45Um, actually it's more behind the decks than it is music because I actually just found myself
04:51when it came to making music.
04:52Like I was kind of all over the place.
04:55Um, but like, it was just something I was enjoying to do, of course, because I started
05:00making music first.
05:01Right.
05:01So like these influences, like my mom banging, uh, the first two Jill Scott albums back to
05:07back.
05:08You know what I'm saying?
05:09Now off top, listen, off, talk to me off the second album.
05:12I can say that restfully, you know, say quickly, like that was a joint.
05:16I ran back as a kid also off the CD, you know what I'm saying?
05:20Um, but yeah, uh, as a producer first, it was just like these people made me, you know,
05:29saying get Mike or made me feel like the, I can, I can't do anything, but like, and it
05:35just gave this smoothness out of me.
05:37And I didn't really utilize that because like, I feel like I was following, um, the
05:42trends, like what's not really the trends, but like what it was like, who really inspired
05:47me, but like, you know, I feel like everybody started off with how, whoever really inspired
05:51them to do something first.
05:53And then you go, you veer left, like do your own thing.
05:55So I was like on the tip of still learning.
05:58And now, you know, now I'm able to really like put out some quality work because I've learned
06:03just so much of just like from peers, from people that's not here anymore.
06:06Right.
06:07Um, and now for music though, like when behind the decks, it's a wrap, you know what I'm
06:12saying?
06:13Like now I'm able to be like, I can take them to where I was at when I was a kid, you know
06:18what I'm saying?
06:18And like really push them to like, yo, this is where I'm, my thought process is.
06:22And it's like, when I DJ, I don't feel like it's just song for song.
06:27I feel like it's, um, I'm able to, um, I don't think it's song for song.
06:33I'm, I'm able to really pivot folks.
06:38Uh, I'm trying to think of what I'm trying to say.
06:40It's not song for song.
06:42It's more so like of a, I feel like I'm still producing while I'm making, I mean, while I'm
06:47DJing.
06:48So like, I don't feel like it's just, here y'all go.
06:50It's like, I feel like I'm still making, um, yeah.
06:53I'm still feel like I'm actually creating while DJing.
06:55Right.
06:56I don't feel like a lot of people really understand that.
06:58Or if I'm, Hey, if y'all do, you know?
07:01Yeah.
07:02I feel like people don't really.
07:03Cause I think that when they go to certain events, they're just like, okay, the DJ is
07:08just, you know, sliding stuff in.
07:10They don't really understand like how much time, effort and curation goes into it.
07:15Not only that, but also like you just said, you're also producing at the same time.
07:20So how are you able to balance both at the same time?
07:25I cannot.
07:27I'm a person to say I cannot.
07:28It is, it's hard for me, at least it's hard.
07:30Cause at first when I started doing it, it was so dope.
07:35Like I was like, yo, I'm about to go out here and push these remixes and shout out to House
07:39Party Detroit.
07:40Like, uh, I wasn't really on the scene like that DJing.
07:44Like I was only, so me starting off DJing was me only, uh, only playing my beats.
07:52And I did that at Parameda Sound when it was on Jefferson and Agnes.
07:56Um, and it was like every Friday they would have like a beat showcase of, full of producers.
08:03And I was like, I didn't want to come with a laptop.
08:07I didn't want to come with my phone.
08:08I had one day to figure out how to use a controller and play some beats on that joint.
08:15You know what I'm saying?
08:15Cause I wanted the transitions to blend.
08:17So like, and so me teaching myself how to DJ from my own production was the way.
08:22Cause I'm like, Oh, this is how it works.
08:24I'm like, yo, it's a rap.
08:26That probably was a loophole low key because you were already able to like know your own
08:31music in and out.
08:33So you were able to figure out how the blends would work a lot easier than just using music
08:38that wasn't your own.
08:39Exactly.
08:39So like when it came to curation, like I was with it.
08:42So like anybody asked like, Oh, do you DJ anywhere else?
08:44I'm like, nah, unless you want to hear my own music.
08:46Not really.
08:47So when it came to my first set, my boy reckless, he was like, yo, he was like, you want to hop
08:53on the set?
08:54It's like 2018.
08:55And it was a house party event.
08:57It was at Northern Lights Lounge.
08:59And I got some of my favorite songs and I was ripped it.
09:02And I thought I messed up because I downloaded a new program of tractor and I didn't get used
09:07to it.
09:07And I was just like, man, it was terrible.
09:09And they was like, yo, you're fire.
09:11We need you on the next show.
09:12And so ever since then, like we just been backing each other up, like we've been growing
09:17with each other.
09:18And now, you know, ain't no shame.
09:23There's really no shame.
09:24Like I said, so I grew with them.
09:26And like I said, the wave with, like I said, with production, with that too, like it just
09:32so happened, like I was going to do this thing, but like it was so much now, like the party
09:36scene drove me out of like pushing my own music out too.
09:42You know what I'm saying?
09:42Because it was still a good introduction because I, I pushed my remixes out.
09:46Right.
09:46But like, I think the balance of putting that there and there, like I feel like it was just
09:51a split because I still was able to give people music within that, but like I just didn't
09:56do it on the party scene as much.
09:58So unless it was like a remix, you know what I'm saying?
10:01Because yeah, I feel like a lot of people, they want to hear that ears.
10:04It has to be certain events to that.
10:06You want a Friday night?
10:07You don't want to hear no instrumental.
10:08You know what I'm saying?
10:09You want to shake something.
10:10You know what I'm saying?
10:10You want to get out, have a drink, whatnot.
10:12So yeah.
10:13And that's the cool part about, I think when I talk to DJs and just people in the music
10:17industry, like how their brains work, like how you're able to curate for different audiences.
10:22So speaking of, we've been kind of like talking around it.
10:25Can you tell me about 79 FM?
10:28Yeah.
10:28What's going on?
10:30Before I moved here, people were telling me that I need to pull up for 79 FM.
10:34So can you tell everybody what that is?
10:36All right.
10:36So 79 FM is a fictional radio station, right?
10:44In Detroit that, hey, this is it.
10:47This is 79 FM.
10:49It's like, no.
10:49But 79 FM is a fictional radio station that I wanted to, first, initially it was supposed
10:58to be like, it's a project that it was supposed to be a beat tape, right?
11:01And I had all this curations.
11:04I had like a good friend of mine, Mona Lisa, like she did like the, it's supposed to be
11:08like traffic reports.
11:09And it's supposed to be like legit, like a beat tape surrounding, like just based off
11:13Detroit.
11:13But like, it's that radio station that you never get to hear some cool stuff on there.
11:18Right.
11:18So the project never came out.
11:22And this is me being vulnerable as a artist.
11:26I was like, yo, I was like, they probably not going to like it.
11:28But like the idea of it, of course, sound dope, but I just didn't believe myself at the
11:32time.
11:33So Spotlight Detroit opened up and around 2021.
11:38And so like we was there, of course, like all the homies was getting parties or whatnot.
11:42And I was the last to get one.
11:44So it was like, I had a meeting with them, the people at Spotlight.
11:48It was like, oh, we'll give you a Wednesday night.
11:49I'm like, a Wednesday?
11:52I'm like, all right, you know, I guess.
11:54And so I named it 79 FM, you know what I'm saying?
11:57So I'm like, why not start here?
11:58So like, essentially, that was going to be the place to come hear good music.
12:03Like, you know, the beat tape, you know what I'm saying?
12:04I'm like, oh, we can just connect the bridge like that.
12:07So it's been four years.
12:10I've been building a platform there.
12:13I've been bringing different folks up in there.
12:16And it speaks for itself now.
12:18Like this Thursday, I'm sorry, this Wednesday coming up, November 12th, will be the fourth
12:24anniversary of 79 FM.
12:26That's incredible.
12:27Yes.
12:27And this year has been insane.
12:30Like, it's been insane.
12:31I've been going crazy with the theme artists.
12:34And it wasn't like that initially.
12:35Like initially, like I said, I was here to get some good music, you know, at least come
12:40here when I'm bringing to the table.
12:41But then I was just like, you know, ain't a lot of places where y'all can hear like a
12:45Duel A night or Music Soul Child night.
12:48So I was doing single artists.
12:49And then that's why I was like, you know what?
12:51Let's do double artists.
12:52And it wasn't necessarily like a versus because I don't do the versus joint.
12:56Or competition between the two.
12:58Yeah.
12:58No, it's more like what music like goes great with this other artist as well.
13:03Right.
13:04So I had the Cleo Soul and Alex Isley night at the beginning of the year.
13:08And like when I tell you I don't leave people on when I make my flyers, but it legit says
13:14like, yo, this is a night dedicated to Neo Soul and R&B.
13:17And people thought they were about to pull up.
13:18I'm like, yo, no, it ain't this.
13:20But I'm glad though, because like the idea of that makes me know that people know their
13:25music and like the reaction of that kind of sparked, kind of flew off like, yo, I need
13:30to keep coming to these Wednesdays.
13:31So that was the one that people were telling me about.
13:34Yeah.
13:34And I was like, oh, he's tapped in.
13:36Yeah, for sure.
13:37For sure.
13:37And that was a beautiful night too.
13:39If you know, I have a set.
13:41The first half, almost like two hours of the set is on my YouTube channel.
13:46Because I start off with like heavy Alex, but like when my mans came in and taped the
13:52show, it was end up like being like heavy Cleo at that point.
13:55But still, it's a good mix of both around the whole thing.
13:58So what has been your proudest moment in these past four years for 79?
14:05Being able to connect with the city.
14:08Because, yeah, like I said, it's still like a thing for me where I didn't think that I
14:13was going to be in this position or being able to really tap, but for people to really
14:19connect from where I'm at, you know, that's, that's really heartfelt because you can, people
14:24be out here like, and it's still people out here that's just like putting their heart on
14:27the table, you know, like all these ideas I be putting out, I'll be like, y'all don't
14:32like this.
14:32Right.
14:33You know what I'm saying?
14:33And like, it's like, yes, we do.
14:35You know what I'm saying?
14:36And it's not like, I don't want to, the thing is now, like I want, I want people to come
14:42out and enjoy themselves.
14:43But like now, I mean, as far as like the upcoming year, like I'm probably, it's going
14:49to be like a hot with the theme nights just because I'm trying to sell people more of the
14:54party than I am.
14:55Like who's next?
14:57And I'm like, it ain't like that.
14:59You know what I'm saying?
14:59You want the vibe to be similar, but not to be always having to.
15:03That's why it's never just like, yo, we playing, you know, Alex Isley or Cleo Soul legit all
15:12night.
15:12It's wrapped up.
15:13Everything is wrapped up with the essentials of what made these artists, what made me,
15:17what made y'all to actually come out.
15:20You know what I'm saying?
15:20So like when people hear that other side, it's like, oh, we can turn up and listen to
15:24Cleo Soul.
15:25What you mean, son?
15:26We can do this.
15:27And I'm like, yes, you can.
15:28So now going forward, like I'm going to wrap this year up nice.
15:32You know, we're going to do this D'Angelo tribute next month.
15:36I'm doing is I want to.
15:40Yes.
15:40I want to do because I can be, um, I can be, uh, oops, but that's what it is.
15:50I can be, um, a, uh, huge, I'm a, you know, I'm a huge Beyonce fan.
15:58Oh, okay.
15:59Right.
15:59But like, I'm telling you, like, it's nobody in the city that plays Beyonce like me.
16:04I'm going to say that.
16:05That's, that's a big claim.
16:07Yeah, no, yeah, no, ain't nobody going to play Beyonce like me in the city.
16:10It is no shock, no, no this or nothing.
16:12Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
16:13But nobody plays Beyonce like me in the city, like at all.
16:15So it's either between I'm doing a whole Beyonce night to end the, the, the 2025 series or, or
16:22we're going to do a Leon Thomas and Solange night.
16:25Oh.
16:26So like, yeah, you know, it can get, it can go either way.
16:28You know what I'm saying?
16:29Because like we can have, it's like, we got Beyonce, but this, you know what I'm saying?
16:34So like, it's, it's a, it's either one or two, you know what I'm saying?
16:37Well, I like the way you think.
16:38I like the way you think.
16:39And obviously you're looking forward and trying to evolve this.
16:43So with Detroit being the, obviously the home of it all, what are you trying to do to preserve
16:50your legacy here in the city?
16:51I think it's already preserved.
16:53Oh, that's right.
16:54I'm not trying to go any further.
16:56Um, if I end up doing some things for the city, like I would like to do some things
17:01outside the city where, you know what I'm saying?
17:03I'm able to like help anybody get on their feet or, you know what I'm saying?
17:08Get some, some, some, some items away or something like that.
17:12I'll, I'll be involved with it in a quick, in a hurry.
17:14You know what I'm saying?
17:15Anytime I see somebody on the street, like I'm, you need some food or something, you
17:19know, like far as like, I feel like Detroit is spoiled for me with me though.
17:23Like, because I, I, it's like, I'm, I'm, I'm here and it's like every time, like, and
17:29I love doing it here, but like, ready to, you know what I'm saying?
17:32Take it, take it out, take it out the city.
17:34And I have my first stop coming up in Washington very soon for the first-
17:39The state or the city?
17:40The city.
17:40I know that's right, Cope.
17:41Go to my stomping grounds.
17:42I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
17:43Yeah, Washington, yeah, D.C.
17:43Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:44Go to my stomping grounds.
17:44I know that's right.
17:45You know what I'm saying?
17:45So like, 79 FM is about to actually be first time they viewed out there very soon.
17:50They gonna love that.
17:51I'm gonna tell you that.
17:52Yeah, I know.
17:52No, no, listen, listen.
17:54So like, you know, I know, like, I love my city, but like, I am ready to, you know what
17:58I'm saying?
17:59Like, take this else, you know what I'm saying?
18:01Elsewhere.
18:01But this is gonna be always the home.
18:03Right.
18:03The actual, like, yo, this is where it's anchored from.
18:07Like, it's not gonna take me nowhere else.
18:09And I'm very humbled, you know what I'm saying?
18:12Here in Detroit.
18:13And like, I want to stay, stay that way also wherever I go.
18:16But anything else, like I said, if I have any opportunities for the city, like, I would love
18:21to do something different if I can.
18:23But as far as like, you know, like I said, I'm not really pushing anything else to have
18:30like, yo, this gotta happen.
18:32So like, everybody would know, you know what I'm saying?
18:34I'm like, you know, it always end up happening, like, with just the grace anyway, where it's
18:41like, people already appreciate it, or most appreciate it, appreciate it when they're
18:45gone.
18:46You know what I'm saying?
18:46So like, I feel like what I have done so far, like, God has pushed me here.
18:53And I feel like it's everyday struggle with anybody that feels like they have something
18:59more to do.
19:00And I've been telling myself like, yo, like, this is not enough.
19:03Like, I'm trying to gear for more things to happen for Wednesday.
19:06And like, I have reminders from friends that tells me like, yo, like, you're doing just
19:09fine.
19:10And if that's not from them, then I hear from God too.
19:13So like, I'm not tripping at all.
19:15Well, it makes sense that you want to branch off because you've been on the road yourself.
19:19Yes.
19:20Don't, don't get it twisted.
19:21Come on out, Lil Brothers official DJ.
19:24Yes.
19:25I know that's right.
19:26Like, how was being on the road?
19:27Because a lot of people don't know about Lil Brother.
19:30No.
19:31Which is crazy.
19:32They do and they don't.
19:34Like, it was this verse, actually, shout out to my homies, rapper Pooh and Refine Tegelo.
19:40But it was this verse that Pooh had said.
19:44He was like, it was off of Wish Me Well, their last single they put out.
19:51Everybody's favorite rappers, let's keep it discreet.
19:53You know what I'm saying?
19:54And it's like, when you think of LB, you got to think of who they influence.
19:59You got Kendrick.
20:00Yeah.
20:00You have Cole.
20:02And you got your man's Drake.
20:05You got your man's Drake, man.
20:06So like, you got the big three.
20:08And it's just like, touring with them was like such an eye opener and just like a crazy evolution
20:15for me to like just push through even more because me, I'm a slum head.
20:20So when they asked me to do this, I'm like, yeah, this is cool.
20:25You know what I'm saying?
20:25Bet.
20:26I would do it.
20:26And it was just like, it wasn't random, but like, it was just like so lined up because
20:30I envisioned it.
20:32Fonte called me.
20:33It was like earlier, but then 2022, he was like, yeah, what's going on, man?
20:38See you DJing out there in Detroit.
20:40He's like, what kind of music you play?
20:41I'm like, oh, you know, I play foreign exchange.
20:43You know, I play y'all stuff, hip hop, R&B, neo soul.
20:46He was like, all right.
20:47He was like, you got your passport?
20:50I was like, yeah.
20:50He was like, all right.
20:51I'm going to probably holler at you later on.
20:55And I'm like, all right.
20:56You know, and I'm just like, I'm about to go on tour.
20:59I was like, I literally said this in my head.
21:00That's crazy.
21:01This is 22.
21:03I had a fire around like February of 2022.
21:08I was like messed up for a minute.
21:11Finally got in a new place.
21:12I haven't heard nothing.
21:13They ain't say, I ain't hear a word from them at all.
21:16And I'm just like, all right.
21:17I mean, I'm not expecting it to, but like, it was just like,
21:19I would love some good news right now.
21:22You know what I'm saying?
21:22So like around August of 2022, I believe, Fonte called me.
21:30He's like, yo, you got some time to talk?
21:32I'm like, yeah.
21:32He was like, all right.
21:33I got Poo on the line.
21:34And he was just like, yo.
21:35He was like, we gearing up to get some stuff started.
21:38He was like, we want to see if you want to be our tour DJ.
21:40And I'm like, yes, absolutely.
21:45So when I got on the road with them,
21:46and actually this is the craziest part.
21:48This is how I know these brothers own business.
21:50They was like, yeah, we're going to see the itinerary and everything.
21:53And I'm like, okay.
21:54So I'm thinking like, it's going to be, I believe like two weeks out.
21:56Cause they wanted me to come to the city and like, check it out.
21:59And you know what I'm saying?
22:00Like, it was going to be like a whole thing to come actually check out their culture of hip hop.
22:03That's cool.
22:04Shout out to the Justice League.
22:06And I got the itinerary the next day.
22:08Like, I think I was gone that same weekend, that following weekend I was gone.
22:11They flew me out there.
22:12You know what I'm saying?
22:13Met they people.
22:15You know what I'm saying?
22:15Like I had dinner.
22:17I think, no, actually we had, we got Waffle House.
22:20Come on now, Waffle House.
22:21And we took it back to the crib.
22:22You know what I'm saying?
22:23But like, I think it was a question.
22:26I think Fante asked me at the table.
22:29Or I think it was more, I believe it was at the table.
22:31But he was like, yo, like, you know, is this something you want to do?
22:35Like, how you feel about it?
22:36You know what I'm saying?
22:36I was like, everybody's so nice.
22:37I'm like, yeah.
22:38You know what I'm saying?
22:40So like, got into it.
22:42And one thing after another, like, I ended up learning who Little Brother truly was.
22:47You know what I'm saying?
22:48And of course, I'm not sure if you know, like I said, I have, this started because he found,
22:53Fante found me through Twitter.
22:54And I had sampled a song from Solange's album.
22:59And I did the hashtag.
23:01And he was going through the album reviews of that.
23:04And I, you know, my beat flip was, my beat flip was on the hashtag.
23:09So he was like, yo, like, what is this?
23:11So I was asleep.
23:12It's like three o'clock in the morning.
23:14I get a, I'm looking at my reviews.
23:16Like, you know, I'm just like, oh, let me see what they said on Twitter.
23:18And this was Twitter days before Elon bought it.
23:20So algorithm was beautiful.
23:24But he was going through it.
23:26And I look, the homie Dart Adams had holla.
23:29He was like, yo, he was like, Fante Coleman, want that track.
23:31And I'm like, this is three o'clock in the morning.
23:35I'm like, I don't, I know who Fante is, but who is Fante Coleman?
23:39So I go to Google.
23:40I'm like, oh, wait, Fante Coleman is Fante.
23:43I was like, oh, snap, bet.
23:44So one thing, once, I mean, like, on to the next, like, we end up connecting.
23:49And that same beat ended up being on the last Little Brother album.
23:53It's called Work Through Me.
23:54And it's tied with the homie.
23:56Like I said, me and Focus actually made the beat because the, I think the sample was too
24:01much to clear.
24:03They was like giving them a hard time, I believe.
24:05So like, Focus ended up, the Focus, the producer, I don't know if you know who that is.
24:09Like, yeah, yeah.
24:10Ended up lacing the track off my drums and it just ended up becoming a banger.
24:13So like when I heard it instantly, because I heard the album from start to finish and
24:17I heard my drums, I'm just like going crazy.
24:20You know what I'm saying?
24:21So they wanted like more of a producer, DJ type thing, which made sense.
24:26You know what I'm saying?
24:27Bring more some flavor, feel to the group.
24:30And learning them brothers, like I said, has been a blessing.
24:33I feel like God definitely placed me there for the right reason.
24:37And we ended up the tour great.
24:38You know what I'm saying?
24:39This was their last tour.
24:40We ended it off in Raleigh for the last venue tour, which was amazing.
24:48That's their home, right?
24:49Yeah, yeah.
24:50They're from Raleigh.
24:51Yeah, Raleigh.
24:53Well, around that area.
24:54Around that area, yeah.
24:55You got Greensboro.
24:57I've been learning.
24:57I'm still learning where they're from.
24:59You know what I'm saying?
24:59But like, it's been incredible with them.
25:02And then we ended up in Raleigh, had an amazing show, and then we took it to the cruise.
25:07We did the Rock the Bells joint.
25:10So we went to Miami to Bimini.
25:15I said it right, right?
25:16I think so.
25:16Yeah, I believe so.
25:17I think it's Bimini.
25:18Yeah.
25:19So, yeah, we did that.
25:20You know what I'm saying?
25:21Met a lot of good folks on that boat.
25:23You know?
25:24Connected with DJ Kool.
25:26Which is crazy.
25:27Yeah, DJ Kool.
25:28Man, super cool.
25:30Super cool.
25:30Of course, DJ Kool.
25:32Connected with MC Light.
25:34Jadakiss.
25:37Insane.
25:39Jazzy Jeff.
25:40Afion Crockett.
25:43Man.
25:43You had everybody.
25:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:45No, it was a time on that boat, man.
25:48Like, legit.
25:49And we rocked it, you know what I'm saying?
25:51So, like, now, I don't want to stop.
25:54Right.
25:55You know?
25:55But it's like, they gear me.
25:58I feel like anything, they set the standard of where, you know what I'm saying?
26:03Where to be.
26:03You're going next.
26:04Yeah.
26:04Yeah, exactly.
26:05You know what I'm saying?
26:05Like, I got a lot of tools and a lot of blueprints now, like, working with them.
26:09And so, I don't feel like it's done.
26:10It's done touring.
26:11But, like, you just have to just, like, wait and see.
26:13Because, like, we thinking about, you know what I'm saying?
26:15It could be like festivals.
26:16But it got to be like, yo, we here.
26:18Right.
26:18You know what I'm saying?
26:19So, like, but other than that, like, yeah.
26:21Nah, it's been so good touring with them.
26:24That's so cool.
26:25And, like, nah, like I said, it ain't really done.
26:26It's like, they family, too.
26:27It's not just, like, we do work.
26:29Of course, we break bread.
26:30But, like, these are family.
26:31You know what I'm saying?
26:32I can call them.
26:32It's just like, yeah, man, how you doing today?
26:34You all right?
26:35You know?
26:35You know?
26:36It's like, ain't no issue.
26:38So, yeah, I love them.
26:40Shout out to y'all.
26:41I love that for you.
26:41Because as a fan of them, like, I can only imagine being able to just call.
26:46But I love what has happened in your career.
26:49I love how full circle it's been for you.
26:51I love how organic has been for you.
26:54And I love that you are looking to the future from Detroit to beyond.
26:59But I want to end this off with a rapid fire Detroit questions.
27:03This might get you, you know, get you thinking a little bit.
27:07So, let's start off.
27:07East side or west side?
27:08West side.
27:09One spot that you take an outer town or two.
27:11One spot I take an outer town or two.
27:13One spot that you got to take someone who's not from here to.
27:17I would say Coney.
27:19But I'm, like, anti-Coney right now.
27:21Yeah, I'm anti.
27:22It depends what Coney.
27:23You know, I take them to a Coney.
27:25It's a Coney spot.
27:26It's on 8 Mile.
27:27It's Omega, Coney Island.
27:30Listen, this is the best Coney Island in the world.
27:32I probably have to take them there.
27:33Because it's the only Coney I know that serves.
27:36We got salmon and eggs in the morning.
27:39Like, it's really good.
27:41And they close at 3 o'clock.
27:42So, they care about the quality of day.
27:44You know what I'm saying?
27:44It's not 24 hours.
27:46They care about day restaurants.
27:47So, I'm like, yeah.
27:48I probably have to take them to Omega, Coney Island.
27:50I love that.
27:51Okay.
27:52What street or neighborhood tells your story?
27:56Seven Mile Greenfield.
27:57Period.
27:58Detroit track that you put it on and the crowd jumps immediately.
28:03Bust them and get this money.
28:05Boy, would you?
28:09Or you got a roll with my, get high with my, count stat with my, yeah, yeah, yeah.
28:14Any blade, for sure.
28:15Any blade.
28:16That is true.
28:16People do be going crazy.
28:18Okay.
28:18A favorite local artist not a lot of people know about?
28:21Mefta.
28:22Ooh, okay.
28:23Yeah, shout out to my boy Mefta.
28:25I'm going to tap in.
28:26I'm going to tap in.
28:27Now, Detroit slang.
28:28What's a word or a phrase only locals get?
28:31What up, though?
28:32Come on, now.
28:32Come on, now.
28:34And if Detroit was an emoji, what would it be?
28:37I'm trying not to think of a sports team.
28:39So I'm like, yo, I'm putting a tiger, a lion, a hockey stick all together.
28:48Hey, it'll be the heart symbol.
28:50It's all love here.
28:52Who's someone in the Detroit scene that you think is doing incredible work right now
28:56and deserves to be highlighted as a Detroit change maker?
29:00This is hard because I know so many people that are doing this.
29:03You can name, like, five.
29:05Okay, top five?
29:06Okay, bet.
29:06All right, bet.
29:07That's cool.
29:07Because there's one I'm like, yo, you're like, what about me, son?
29:11All right, I'll top the homies.
29:14They are an entity, so I have to put them, like, you know what I'm saying?
29:17One, House Party Detroit for sure.
29:19They've been moving the culture for a while.
29:22They definitely deserve their flowers.
29:24For sure, my homie Full Body Durag, incredible producer, DJ.
29:30Oh, my God.
29:30Insane.
29:33Who else I've been looking at that's been pretty dope?
29:41Scott Jetta.
29:43Mm-hmm.
29:45And there's no order, really.
29:46Yeah, right.
29:47No order.
29:48Black Hedo.
29:50Definitely Black Hedo.
29:51Essentially, like I said, what I like about him is, like,
29:55he brings a lot of his culture into the city, too,
29:57which has been, like, prevalent for, like, the last,
30:00been heavy prevalent for the last three years.
30:03You know what I'm saying?
30:04Because, like, we have, like, our culture,
30:05but bringing, like, the Afro scene, you know what I'm saying?
30:09Like, bringing that over here and, like, mixing it in.
30:11Like, it's a good culture shift for sure.
30:14I love that.
30:15Yes.
30:15Okay.
30:16Obviously, D'Angelo Night going down November 12th.
30:19Yeah.
30:20Where can everybody find you so they can stay up to date
30:23with what Black Gold's got going on?
30:24They can find me at Black Gold.
30:26That's B-L-A-A-Q-G-O-L-D at, yeah, at Black Gold,
30:31B-L-A-A-Q-G-O-L-D on Instagram.
30:34And get it right.
30:35There's no space.
30:36There's no nothing.
30:37Listen, listen.
30:37Because I saw that post the other day.
30:39It's a reminder because there's no shade to nobody.
30:42Because when you want your name correct,
30:45and you want to see your name on the lights or whatever,
30:47like, you don't want to be like, oh, yeah.
30:50But there's a typo.
30:51There's a typo.
30:52So, yeah, there's no space.
30:54It's all one word.
30:55It's all, it can be, I ain't going to say it's all caps.
30:59It's just all together.
31:00We don't put it like that because I don't want to, you know,
31:02people to go in there like, yo, I seen a space actually on your own
31:05just Spotify.
31:05And I'm like, that's the Spotify's actually fault too.
31:09So, but no, yeah, it's Black Gold, B-L-A-A-Q-G-O-L-D.
31:13This Wednesday at Spotlight Detroit, we're going to go up for the fourth
31:18anniversary.
31:19We're going to do it for D'Angelo, a very loved one, lost one, you know.
31:24And I didn't want to, low key, like, I didn't want to,
31:28I actually put a poll up to, you know, see, like, what people wanted to,
31:34because I had all these ideas.
31:35I'm like, yo, what should we do for the fourth anniversary?
31:37And then he died, it was like, you know, I was like, it was, you know,
31:41I was like, yeah, it's only right, you know what I'm saying?
31:43So, like, I feel like my heart was in it to do it too.
31:46So, like, Wednesday is definitely going to be, like, a very, very,
31:49very, like, curated, you know what I'm saying?
31:52Like, really personal, you know what I'm saying?
31:54Because, like, it's D'Angelo.
31:56Right.
31:57You know, and, like, it didn't really hit me.
31:59I don't know, like, when something really hit you, like,
32:01a couple days after, you know what I'm saying?
32:03Like, that's how I was with MJ.
32:03I was just like, for real?
32:05And I just found myself crying in the car as a kid.
32:08I'm like, yo, like, he gone.
32:10You know what I'm saying?
32:10So, like, with D'Angelo, it was just like,
32:13it was a good thing to see, like, my timeline flooding.
32:16Like, yo, everybody on, clearly I'm following the right people.
32:19Right.
32:19But, like, at the same time, like, it got overwhelming
32:22because I'm like, yo, like, he's actually out of here.
32:26You know what I'm saying?
32:26So, like, it's going to be a time, like I said,
32:29to celebrate life clearly.
32:31You know what I'm saying?
32:32Birthdays, whoever's invited.
32:33Like, just more than, well, you know what I'm saying?
32:35Just, like, if we think of it as morning,
32:38like, we got four years of me, you know what I'm saying,
32:41actually, like, bringing, like, the, or us,
32:44because it's not just a me thing.
32:45Four years of Detroit actually, like,
32:47celebrating the energy that we brought to the spotlight Detroit.
32:49So, shout out to Ruler.
32:51Shout out to Jessie for making me or helping me out
32:53with, like, just bringing, like, the energy up in the space.
32:56Like, couldn't do that without them also.
32:57So, yeah.
32:58Well, I'm excited to see what goes down November 12th
33:02and obviously still follow.
33:04And thank you so much for your time, Black Gold.
33:06Thank you so much for yours, too.
33:07Appreciate you.
