The wise Dr. Faust (Richard Burton) is an astronomer, a scholar of science and mathematics, and a brilliant medieval eminence. One day, he goes to the forest to do something that transcends science and nature: to communicate with the devil. He does so and signs a pact with him through the infernal prince Mephistopheles (Andreas Teuber). The devil will grant Faust all his desires, including the love of Helen of Troy (Elizabeth Taylor), and Faust, in return, will sell him his body and soul after 24 years. But as Faust's time passes, he is overcome with regret for his unwitting pact.
