00:00So we're here at the set of school today. Tell me what made you want to do this show.
00:05Well, you know, when they come to you after you've been having a blast on a TV show for five years,
00:10you know, the Goldbergs is one of those shows where as a comedian, I never had to improvise once
00:15because the writers are better than I am. And then they tell you that they are thinking about
00:20doing a spinoff of your character where you have your own show that follows the Goldbergs.
00:26I was like, okay, let me check my schedule. Oh yeah. I'm wide open forever. So, you know,
00:34I mean, it's just a privilege. Plus I get to work with Tim Meadows, you know, who I've been a fan
00:39of forever. And then you get these young actors like AJ Mishanka and Brett Dyer, who was on Jane
00:45the Virgin for five years, you know, that kind of like talent and the fact that they've been working
00:49so long is not an accident. So, you know, every day is basically a laugh and I knew it'd be great.
00:55So, and Adam Goldberg, I mean, come on. And, and, and Mark Furick and all these writers have been
01:00doing this forever. They're so talented. And talk a little bit about the crossover
01:04and the spinoff, like what can fans really expect? I think fans can expect, you know,
01:11the Goldbergs, but like different characters, but a lot of the same characters, the same tone,
01:16a lot of the same humor, but in a different setting 10 years later. So the Goldbergs takes place in the
01:2280s. This now takes place in the 90s. And it was a different time. And, you know, people,
01:28characters like myself, were having to come to terms with a changing world and our characters
01:32react to it. And how do we navigate that? And how do we teach our students what to expect?
01:36And will we see some people from the Goldbergs here? What kind of faces can we expect?
01:41You'll see some people from the Goldbergs. You'll also see a lot of famous people from the 90s.
01:46Oh, tease us a little bit more. Hmm. I guess famous athletes, famous actors. We got quite the
01:54roster. We got pull here at ABC slash Sony. Okay. Who would you love to see? I mean, when you think
01:59of the 90s, you think of Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears. I mean...
02:04Yeah. I think of, uh, I think of Michael Jordan. I don't know why. Whenever I think of the 90s,
02:09I think of Michael Jordan. I just, I don't think anybody had ever seen anybody like him.
02:13It wasn't just his insane athleticism. It was his, well, he was the first man to fly.
02:18You know? I mean, in a way. Like, it was just like, how is he jumping? But it was also just
02:22his will to win. Can you tease any 90s guest stars that we may see?
02:26I don't know. Maybe, maybe guys like, let me think.
02:32Because the Goldbergs is known for their big guest stars. Yeah.
02:35So we will see some of that here. Yeah, you'll see some of that here.
02:38And who from the Goldbergs cast will we see on this show? Like, will Wendy be coming over?
02:42Yeah. You'll probably see, uh, Wendy. You'll probably see, uh, Wendy McClendon-Covey.
02:49You'll see, uh, Barry. You'll see Haley Arantia make a guest appearance.
02:54Mm-hmm.
02:54So it's, we have a lot of crossover.
02:56Okay.
02:57The Goldbergs. It's exciting.
02:58And will you still be involved with the Goldbergs?
03:02Yes. The answer is I've been shooting a lot of episodes this season.
03:05Okay.
03:06But, you know, after a while, things get a little crazy, so I may have to take a break.
03:10So you hop from the 80s to the 90s. What's that like for you?
03:13It's so difficult to go from my 80s accent to my 90s accent. To go from my 80s naivete to my 90s know-how.
03:21And the age, 10 years, is very difficult because I have to have my face tightened.
03:24And then I let it go. 80s, 90s.
03:29What, what kind of fun have you guys been having on the set?
03:32You know, I mean, it's always a laugh because everybody's essentially a comedian. It's a comedy.
03:36The great thing about shooting a comedy versus a one-hour drama is that you're around people who are funny.
03:43And Tim Meadows is a principal yet again, so...
03:46Tim Meadows is the principal yet again.
03:47What kind of principal is he?
03:48Look, Tim is, he plays a new age principal. He plays a sensitive man.
03:55He plays the, you know, this is, the 90s was the birth of the sensitive man.
03:59Where it was okay to be in touch with your feelings.
04:01My character doesn't even know what feelings are.
04:04In every show or a book or a story, there's usually a character that stays the same.
04:10A reminder of where we were, kind of that sort of, I guess, base point.
04:15And I think Coach Mellor is that.
04:17Hey there, this is Brian Callum on the set of Schooled.
04:21Thank you very much for checking out Hollywood Life.
